Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a DREAM . . . Good & Dark Fairies, Kings & Princes, Fire Breathing Dragon & a Golden Beauty.......2007-06-16

Once upon a Dream, many moons ago, when I was a child; I viewed this Dark Disney Fairy Tale and became instantly mesmirized by all fairy folk and tales to be told. Dear Walt gave us little gals the imagined lore of pretty Princess's or Princess's to be. As well as the Tom boy in me, the warrior Princes with sword and shield fighting for the greatest cause . . . defending ones kingdom from evil overbearing forces.

My undying luv for the winged serpents of old - Dragons, is all given credit due to my favorite Walt Disney villian . . .
Malevolent Maleficent, considered a Dark Fairy (more suitable in Disney standards of the time than a witch) who transformed her being into the statuesque purple fire breathing dragon in the ending battle together with Prince Phillip and the delightful fairies; Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather to save the realm from darkness.

MALEVOLENT MALEFICENT, THE DARKEST FAIRY - notable quotes:
"The Forest of Thorns shall be his tomb!
Move through the skies on a fog of doom!
Now go with the curse, and serve me well!
Round Stefan's Castle, CAST MY SPELL!"

"She is indeed, most wondrous fair.
Gold of sunshine in her hair,
lips that shame the red red rose.
In ageless sleep, she finds repose.
The years roll by, but a a hundred years to a steadfast heart, are but a day.
And now, the gates of a dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way.
Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall!
To wake his love with "loves' first kiss"! And prove that "true love" conquers all! AHAHAHAHAHA!"

SLEEPYING BEAUTY is most intoxicating, hilariously funny, beautiful artistry, classical music and captivating characters immortalized. Both an enchantment and fulfilling destiny, from a prickling finger to a long awaited magical kiss.

Other Disney's to see in the realm of Princess Fairy tales:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney Special Platinum Edition)
Cinderella (Two-Disc Special Edition) (Platinum Edition)

Walt Disney has been adored and admired by many generations since his beginning in the movie animation industry. Sir Walt has become a part of movie making history and his Disney kingdom will continue to grow, and for future generations, his legend will live on evermore.

LadyGray quote:
"The last in Sir Walts time, a Fairy Tale to be told;
The setting of the stage is a unique Dark Disney mold.
This adventurous stunning musical for all to see and believe;
A long quest to save a kingdom and release Sleeping Beauty free."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-31

I purchased this DVD at a used bookstore for $14.95 and I was expecting it to be damaged in some way, but it wasn't!

Anyway, this is the classic Disney movie about a jealous witch, a beautiful princess, three bumbling fairies, a handsome prince, and the spell.

I highly recommend that everyone watch this movie with their children.

A+++

It took really long for delivery, however, it's a great classic and worth it! I'm glad that even though it was sent back into the Disney Vault, I was still able to get it on Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dr. Suess that the child in all of us will love.......2007-05-12

I remember these videos from my childhood and now my kids are enjoying them too. My 2 yo son loves me to read the Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham over and over. I thought this would be a great visual addition to our regular reading and all three of my kids love it. Of course there are several more great stories on the DVD as well. A great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Suess. Plus, you can't beat Alan Sherman as the Cat's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2007-05-08

I am an Elementary teacher and purchased this DVD to enrich my Dr. Seuss unit about rhyming, poetry and social issues. The animation is wonderful, and it brings the stories my students have heard hundreds of times to life. Not to mention, each story has an important message. After reading "The Lorax" and seeing it on this DVD, we decided as a class to plant a tree for Earth day. For teachers or even parents with young children, Dr. Seuss inspires and teaches with rhyming, phonemic awareness and also important social messages. This DVD is more than cartoons, it is a wonderful opportunity to enrich young lives.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Seuss: visonnary with wit, fantasy and serious messages.......2007-03-09

Although I sometimes doubt about translating books into movies/animation, I was positively impressed by the quality of Dr Seuss films. I purchased the DVD for "the Lorax" exclusively, which is a masterpiece (book AND film), but also loved many other ones, especially "the sneetches". All of them are fun, with the inimitable rhythm and humor of Dr Seuss... but I am amazed at the way he grasps serious subjects like the society of consumption, profit and greed distroying the environment (the Lorax), or like racism, social discrimination and stupidity (Sneetches)! Great for ages 4 to 100! Bravo Dr Seuss! Hope there were more people like you!

4 out of 5 stars Classics.......2007-01-12

All the classics are on this DVD. You wouldn't think Dr. Seuss would be bad for young children since the books are great for first time readers but my son starting pointing aggressively and saying "NO" and "OUT" just like the fish does to the Cat in the Hat when we would ask him not to do something. There is always at least one character that is angry.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOMERIFICTULAR.......2006-08-16

This is a grrrrreat DVD. All the animated Dr. Seuss toons are here except for How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Almost 3 hours of Seuss on 1 DVD! The quality is excellent. I like this DVD most of all becasue it's very space-saving.

Rising to the challenge of Dogma 95's self-imposed restrictions on aesthetic freedom, Thomas Vinterberg's The Celebration is a remarkable example of the way limits can give rise to creative opportunity. (Dogma 95 is a Danish filmmakers collective that also includes Lars von Trier, director of Breaking the Waves. The group crafted a manifesto in which its members vow to eschew special lighting, optical effects, props, and the visible imprint of a director's personality in order to attain higher truths yielded by characters.) The Celebration, shot with a small video camera and transferred to 35mm film, concerns a black-tie birthday gathering for a family patriarch, Helge (Henning Moritzen), which erodes into a battle after long-suppressed secrets are revealed and the chance to settle old scores presents itself. Among the grievances are an accusation of incest and the responsibility for the death of a child--gruesome stuff, but Vinterberg doesn't characterize the partying crowd's reaction in quite the way one might have expected. In fact, the whole of The Celebration is about unexpected perspectives and vantage points emerging from out of nowhere, largely due to Vinterberg's free hand at editing the film in such a way as to yank truth from every corner. This is a strong work that belies skepticism over Dogma 95's bare-bones trendiness, and is perhaps a harbinger of great work to come from Vinterberg. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-27

If you haven't ever seen a Dogma film, watch this one first, but I am told that you might not like the rest; This is arguably the best.

5 out of 5 stars Dogme #1: the first, and remains the best.......2007-05-19

One quickly forgets about the camera work or thoughts of video vs. film because the story is so compeling. It's back to the basics of good filmmaking with the twist of handheld DV photography done with great skill.

5 out of 5 stars Like watching a Car Crash!.......2007-04-14

The camera work, the direction, the casting, the acting...everything. Utterly fantastic.

Very dark humour, extreme, touching. Breathtaking. This is cinema at its best.

Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars dreadful.......2007-03-07

One of the worst films I have ever seen. It serves only to depress the hell out of the viewer. Adherence to an aesthetic is not the basis for a five star review. I am quite shocked at the almost universal praise it is receiving. If sexual abuse is your idea of compelling subject matter, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration Like No Other.......2006-12-31

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg brings us this stark and stunning dark comic telling of a successful son named Christian (Ulrich Thomson) who reunites with his family for his father's sixtieth birthday, only to undercut the event with harsh accusations of a tortuous truth. The chaos that follows is both calamitous and comic, sad and somber.

A lot of what makes this psychological study so successful is in Vinterberg's direction, which is mostly in accordance with the doctrines of Dogme 95 - a set of precepts for production laid down by Vinterberg and Lars Von Trier (Breaking the Waves) in which no tripod or dolly shots are allowed, and the film stock and lighting contribute to a shaky, naturalistic and documentary-style finished product.

This style serves to enhance the substance of the already substantial script, adding filmic flesh and muscle to a strong skeletal foundation. And though the Dogme 95 rules are generally seen as being restrictive, in this movie they only serve to set the story free; the cinematography yields a result that is both starkly real and impressionistically atmospheric, which allows moods to merge, the normal and paranormal to fuse, and truth and metaphor to co-exist.

Whereas some more traditionally shot mood pieces have to bludgeon the viewer with obvious symbolic images to penetrate the narrative, here narrative and image collide to become the symbolism. It is this clever trick that empowers the actions of the screenplay, making them much more than the sum of their parts.

There are some films that make it difficult to remerge with the everyday flow of the "real" world, because the reality created on the screen is so strong that it doesn't allow external constructs to filter through, even long after the credits have rolled. The Celebration is just such a film.

5 out of 5 stars His love never ends..........2005-11-23

"This becoming is harder than it seems." ~Michael W. Smith

In a mosaic of contemporary Christian classics, Michael W. Smith creates an atmosphere of worship. He is more than a signpost to help us find a way to worship God, his voice is a musical portal that opens the heart and encourages a full participation in the worship of our Creator. His heart is all encompassing as he sings and invites the audience to join him in his choice to make worship a lifestyle.

This concert has a variety of musical styles with global appeal. As a teenager I enjoyed a few of his first songs while living in Africa and only later realized that his music had infused the world with a love for God. "Friends" was a song I knew before I knew who Michael W. Smith was and his songs are gifts to the world that change lives and provide a place for souls to find comfort.

Surprise: Amy Grant joins Michael and sings El Shaddai and Thy Word - both unforgettable.

The Special features include: "Alternate Angle, Signs - Music Video, Making of Signs, Behind the Scenes, Photo Album and Compassion International."

I went to a concert in Seattle, WA and it was "the" most spiritual experience of my life. Once you experience a Michael W. Smith concert, your life is changed forever. There is a place that opens in your heart that can't be closed again. The powerful feeling of love and connection to God is one I've never experienced in any other concert.

Michael's voice is as beautiful as ever and his love for God has deepened and his concern for the world is very evident.

    ~The Rebecca Review

3 out of 5 stars Where is the younger Michael?.......2005-10-03

I was kind of disappointed by this video. Sincerely, I was hoping it was like the change your world video. What I saw on it, was a more mature - worship Michael W. Smith. It seems that younger Michael has changed, maybe not for worse but, in a celebration DVD I was wondering for Color Blind, Picture Perfect, Love me Good or at least, Live the Life, those songs are really hits from him, and hearing songs from other songwriters, well, I was disappointed. The Production of the show, however, is great.

    4 out of 5 stars very good.......2005-09-29

Well this DVD is quite good and Michael W. Smith is one of my favorite all-time artists, but I was a tad disappointed. First of all there are just so many many wonderful songs that were not performed. Now of course I realize he cannot put 50 songs on the DVD...but just a smattering of songs like 'hand of providence, never been unloved, pray for me, emily, cross my heart, I miss the way....there's just sooo many I would have loved to hear. And to put salt in the wound, many of his best songs were much abbreviated in this concert: For You, Place in this world and more. Also I could have done without Amy Grant. (nothing personal, I'm just not into her music as much). Also the background scenes on the big screen were a bit distracting.

Having said all that, it sounds like I hated it. But actually I really enjoy watching this show. Michael sounds wonderful. The music is great. The band is great. Michael is warm and friendly with the audience. I could watch and listen to him perform all day long. He is one of the best songwriters/artists of our time. For me it was definately worth the $15 even though it wasn't everything I hoped it would be. I will watch this many times.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHS and lows.......2005-05-26

First of all, I must clearify that I am not a big fan of contemporary Christian music. But Michael Smith's music called my attention since a couple of his songs became pop hits, specially "Place in this world". So I'm not going to talk about the message or the meaning of his songs, which undeniably should be reason enough for any fan of Christian music to be attracted to this particular performance. I'd like to concentrate instead in some aspects of interest for any outsider:
    THE HIGHS.
    a) I've seen a good share of concerts in DVD. Michael Smith's DVD has one of the bests sounds I've ever heard. The 5.1 mix properly enhance the fullness of the sound. The bass and drums are strong but with no distortion, and the rest of the instruments are crystal clear. This quality is no surprise: from Michael's records, you can tell that the sound is never second rate, and that he, as a performer, pays good attention to that aspect.
In that regard, his voice is heard good. Wether you can argue if he has a great voice or not (I think he has a good and appropriate voice) he still sings in concert as he does in studio. So what you've heard, is what you get.
    b) The inclusion of the "Signs" video. At least is something, until a collection of all his videos is released, if ever. The sound of the video is neatly mixed for 5.1, and that's something that you rarely see in an extra. The inclusion of "The Making of" this video is a little redundant, but it's still fun to see how they made it.
    c) Two more videos can be seen in the special features, as alternate angles: "There she stands" and "This is your time". This is particulary special, because you can see the video that otherwise is played in the concert in the background, but with the sound of the concert, not the original studio sound. "Sings" is also included in this feature. Again, at least is something until a video compilation comes out.
    d) The inclusion of Amy Grant, as a guest artist, in three songs. No duets, though.
    e) No laser lights, or special effects, or dances, or fake poses. Just a pure and simple performance the old fashion way. Just to enjoy the music and the message.
    THE LOWS.
    a) A 20 year celebration deserves more than an hour and a half performance. There are songs that I'd have liked to hear, for instance "Give it away" or "Cry for love".
In that regard, there are a few songs that are piled up in a medley, with piano solo, as if Michael is just fulfilling a compromise to include them. Maybe I have a little prejudice here, because "Place in this world", that I wanted to hear complete and with full band and all, is one of those chopped songs. And although the raw performance of Michael and piano reminds us that in the end, it's about the songs and the voice, the medley, followed by "There she stands" become a little tedious.
    b) Amy Grant's voice in Lead me on (the first song she sings) is heard a little low in the beginning.
    c) The videos that can be watched as alternate angles (check "c" in the highs), can only be accessed in the special features menu, not during the concert (at least not in my DVD player). Although you can hear them with the concert audio, the mix for this feature is only stereo, not 5.1.
Overall, I must say that I was impressed with what I saw, so the highs overcome the lows, and I think a five star rate is fair.

    5 out of 5 stars Michael W. Smith as a Journeyman. Excellent!!.......2005-03-27

Being a longtime listener of MWS and having seen him a number of times in concert over the years, I figured I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from this DVD. I was a little blown away upon our first view of it. The super showy style of performance which we saw for years has been replaced with an understated approach that puts the focus on the music and on Michael's incredible repetroire (not to mention musicianship) And Michael has stayed true to the source that inspired much of this music in the first place. Check it out!!

If you assumed that this video of Lilith Fair, the gathering of female rockers, folkies, and everything in between, was for women only, well, you wouldn't be far wrong. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The 80-minute video mixes interview clips and backstage footage with concert performances by such performers as Sarah McLachlan (Lilith Fair's founder), the Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Meredith Brooks, and Shawn Colvin. Individually and together, they talk about the industry pressures on women in popular music and the sense of community that developed between the performers, as they shared the collective experience of Lilith Fair. And if you guessed that this is a lengthy collection of gently lilting folk songs, guess again. While there is plenty of ultra-sensitive warbling, these women can also rock, including the Indigo Girls (on "Shame on You") and Meredith Brooks (on "Bitch"). --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars Great performance - mediocre sound.......2007-04-20

I loved the performances but what a huge disappointment the sound is. I had trouble understanding what the words were for most songs. It's a shame such a landmark concert was produced by hacks. Can the original sound be that bad? Did they only record to videotape. I can forgive the mediocre video for that era, but there is no excuse for bad mastering. Hacks!

Im so glad i own this amazing piece of documentary, Lilith fair emerged from the genoius of lovely singer/composer Sarah Mclachlan one of the best inspired female songwriters i have ever meet in my whole life and that changed my perception of women in music, with a little help from her friends such as Meredith Brooks, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin and a large list of great performers Lilith fair was one of the most sucessfull tours at the time, the concept is very original, appealing, and the type of audience was one of the coolest, music industry needed some fresh air such as lilith fair, the audience was one of the biggest and tickets were everywere sold out, i hope a new edition of Lilith fair hit the road soon again that would be just great

5 out of 5 stars Sense of being there.......2005-02-17

This was the 1st DVD we bought for our player. What a nice treat. I thought the sound quality was very good. I was a bit unfamiliar with most of the artists, or just knew alittle of them. But after watching this I wondered where I was during this tour. I certainly missed a great opportunity. I couldn't understand why people were walking around during some of the performances. Its hard not to watch this whole thing once you start it(except for maybe the interveiws once you've seen them a couple times, which are between performance tracks). I love this dvd. I wished I'd been more aware of the tour, or had been offered, or forced to go, or knew enough of the artists then, to have wanted to go. These woman look great & their performances are wonderful. I wished they recorded more of it. A good stereo or surround system helps while viewing gives you a sense of being there.

    4 out of 5 stars Sound problems.......2004-07-23

I totally agree with Gregory Sargent's review. The 5.1 surround sound mix is terrible, I thought my left speaker blew when I first watched it but it turned out to be the DVD. The 2 channel stereo has the best sound.
The DVD is awesome, and I totally loved "The Water is Wide" performance. simple beautiful.
    Totally recommend it.
PS. Don't you think that Jewel seemed to be pissed with Sarah M during the song? Did you notice the body language? And they did not give each other hugs after.

The six-disc Stephen Sondheim DVD Collection is pure Broadway gold, encompassing three original Broadway cast performances and three all-star concerts celebrating the work of musical theater's most important composer over the last half of the 20th century. Into the Woods is Sondheim's most popular show, an amalgam of fractured fairy tales and what happens after "happily ever after." Bernadette Peters heads the cast, joined by Tony winner Joanna Gleason and Chip Zein. Sunday in the Park with George was Sondheim's immediately preceding work, also a collaboration with writer-director James Lapine and also starring Bernadette Peters. She plays Dot, the mistress of brilliant French pointillist painter Georges Seurat (Mandy Patinkin), in a powerful work about the nature of art and the artist that gains substantially when you can see the staging elements. The third Broadway cast performance is Passion, which was shot on stage though not before a live audience. It's a story of obsessive love in which the romance between Giorgio (Jere Shea) and Clara (Marin Mazzie) is disrupted by a strange woman named Signora Fosca (Tony winner Donna Murphy).

Sweeney Todd is generally considered Sondheim's best work, and it's well performed by Patti LuPone and George Hearn (reprising his role as the demonic barber almost 20 years after he played it opposite Angela Lansbury in a 1982 video recording). Follies in Concert was an attempt to right a wrong created by a truncated original cast recording, so it's ironic that roughly half the program is backstage material combined with only 47 minutes of concert footage. There are some brilliant moments, though, from such performers as Barbara Cook, Hearn, Patinkin, and Lee Remick. A Celebration at Carnegie Hall is another all-star cast performance of both Broadway stars and operatic voices peppered with comedy from Bill Irwin. Highlights include the ensemble numbers, Daisy Egan's "Broadway Baby," and Patrick Cassidy and Victor Garber's "The Ballad of Booth," which is about as close as you'll get to an original cast performance of Assassins. All in all, this invaluable set preserves and celebrates an important body of work that may never again be documented this well. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Sondheim lovers.......2007-05-08

This is an amazing collection, which showcases the breadth of Mr. Sondheim's talents. No one else combines his musical mastery with his sheer delight in playing with the English language.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny that my mom spent!.......2007-01-15

After watching 3 of the 6 DVDs in this collection, all I can say is "amazing!" The winner thus far is Sweeney Todd. The cast is unmatchable. The only thing missing is the airing of A Little Night Music.

    5 out of 5 stars A TRUE FAN/COLLECTORS GEM.......2007-01-11

I had the chance to see on Broadway : Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, Passion and Into the Woods and Follies in London .It was a real treat to be able to behold the unforgetable experience in that fantastic DVD collection

    5 out of 5 stars Sondheim Collection.......2006-07-03

This is a must have in your collection Sondheim fans! This box set has titles that appeal to both the children and adults in a family. My children love Into the woods and the Carnegie Hall concert especially! One of the best purchases I've made this year.

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim: Greatest Theatre Genuis of the 20th Century .......2005-11-30

I have been in love with the work of Stephen Sondheim since the age of 6, when I first memorized the lyrics to all of the songs from West Side Story. Mr. Sondheim has give us many, many wonderful pieces of theatre, and several of his best pieces are represented here.

Sweeney Todd: considered by many his masterpiece. I prefer the Angela Lansbury / George Hearn casting, but if they chose to star Betty Boop and Donald Duck it couldn't hurt this material. Brilliant.

Follies in Concert: Follies remains my favorite Sondheim musical and, unlike some other reviewers, I thought the ORIGINAL book was brilliant. The later revised version considerably weakened both characters and plot, and the "concert" version is even more woefully incomplete than the original cast album, but thank GOD they saw fit to include, "Too Many Mornings".

Sunday In The Park With George: Pulitzer Prize winning paean to the creative process; I can even forgive the casting of Mandy Patinkin, one of my least favorite actors. The recreation of Seurat's masterpiece during the first act climax still gives me chills.

Passion: the more I watch this achingly beautiful show, the more I think it's one of Sondheim's greatest scores. Subtle, yes, but if you allow it to, it will grow and grow on you until you can't get it out of your mind. This show is for anyone who has ever loved someone that they couldn't have.

Into The Woods: I saw both Broadway productions and had difficulty choosing which was better. I think the original cast, represented here, had a slight edge. Possibly the most "fun" of Sondheim's shows, this take on Grimm's fairy tales is clever, entertaining and highly satisfying.

The Carnegie Hall tribute is also wonderful.

I have long been of the opinion that Sondheim can do no wrong. His lyrics are thrillingly brilliant, witty beyond all expectations, and his music contains depth that other Broadway composers can only dream of. What is most amazing to me is how he can vary styles and musical periods from show to show to show - no two of his musicals are ever alike, which is more than I can say for many other composers. I don't understand those who like him only to a point; I have friends who love Sweeny, Follies and Night Music, but hate Sunday, Passion and Into the Woods. I think he gets better with each succeeding show.

This set is well worth the investment. Hurry and get it, as some of the individual videos are now unavailable, and who knows how long the boxed set will last.

    4 out of 5 stars GREAT DOCUMENTARY - NOT A CONCERT DVD.......2006-10-13

"Festival in the Desert" is a beautiful and well-made documentary of North and East African musicians, along with a few European and American artists, performing in the Malian desert outside Timbuktu at the edge of the Sahara Desert, in what has to be one of the most unique musical events in the world....it is NOT a concert DVD. As some of the other reviewers have astutely indicated, there are cut-aways during songs. Some performer's songs are only heard as "sound bites." That being said, I respect the production values put forth in this DVD, and enjoy it in a Zen-like manner- it is what it is. But if you are a person who is only looking for soup-to-nuts musical video, with lots of DVD "bells and whistles", I'd urge you to spend your hard-earned money on other DVD's.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2005-08-25

I was very excited when I saw this DVD in the store, and I bought it. I really wanted to see Oumou Sangare and Tinariwen perform live, but in both cases, just as the song starts, THEY CUT AWAY FOR AN INTERVIEW! Somehow they manage to include complete performances from the people I didn't care about (Robert Plant, the awful French group, the Navajo heavy-metal band...) while short-changing the actual local bands. The Navajo band is intriguingly weird: the lead singer gives a heart-felt speech about his people losing their culture and language, then the band launches into a heavy-metal song sung in ENGLISH. That was kinda (sadly) amusing...

4 out of 5 stars Midnight at the Oasis comes to Life.......2005-04-09

I rented this yesterday and after viewing, ran to my computer to try and buy one to own. There is the mystique of the desert alone that is captivating and the fusion of the North African/ West African influences, the French and American, well it is too exotic for words. The Navejo, the blues and the African rhythms all coming together under the open skies with goats & camels. Reggae on the River has nothing on this festival. I only wish it had been longer. Trying to do a DVD of such an event and capturing it all, I'm sure was challenging. It was a great "sampling" of talent, but as a "music" video, there weren't enough pieces from each group. I was hoping for more on the special features. In I"LL Sing For You, the extras were great. But, Festival is still a unique and extraordinary journey!

Join Crystal Gayle, John Davidson, David Hasselhoff, and Michael Damian as they celebrate Christmas in the "crystal kingdom": Kalmar and Orrefors, Sweden. This 46-minute video from 1987 features 13 favorite Christmas songs performed in various Swedish locales as well as a brief tour of the Orrefors glass-blowing factory. Solo performances include Gayle's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "O Holy Night," Davidson's "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," Hasselhoff's "Country Christmas," and Damian's "Another Christmastime Without You." Gayle and Davidson pair up on "It's That Time of Year," Gayle and Hasselhoff join together on "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and the four collaborate on a medley of Christmas carols. Song arrangements are fairly traditional, with overlaid string, rhythm, and vocal tracks providing the accompaniment. World champion pair skaters Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner give a wonderfully photographed nighttime skating performance set to Gayle's "Silent Night." In addition to its musical content, this video explores several Swedish Christmastime customs, including the four Sundays of Advent, the tradition of Santa Lucia, and the formal midday feast on December 24. --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars A Merry Little Christmas with Crystal.......2005-12-18

I'm stumped by the bad reviews people have been posting on this DVD. It is what it is - Crystal's 1987 CBS Christmas special filmed in Sweden. She is beautiful as always of course and sings heavenly, what more could you want. Well, I agree she is saddled with some not particularly talented guest stars, although David Hasselhoff seems like a likable California version of a good ole boy and he certainly was a good-looking hunk of man in his thirties. He may not be the world's greatest singer, foreign record sales to the contrary, but he works well with Crystal. It's kind of nice to see an old Christmas show on DVD in a fine print, this was likely one of the last "old fashioned" Christmas variety programs before they got hip and trendy and as false as a fake Christmas tree.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-09-17

I've been a Crystal Gayle fan since I saw her in concert in San Diego many years ago and feel some of the songs she sang in this DVD were good. The part where John Davidson sings to the kids outside the homes should have been cut. I would have liked to hear more songs sung by Crystal Gayle. It was hard to get into a flowing Christmas feeling.

      2 out of 5 stars Crystal DVD.......2001-12-31

I am a big Crystal fan, and am always looking for something new from her, but I was really disapointed with the DVD. It was recorded several years ago, and many of the songs were dubbed from her Christmas CD, and were not even re-recorded for the DVD. In a word, stick to her Christmas CD.

      1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!.......2001-12-14

THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO SAY...AWFUL! THERE'S NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO SAY HOW AWFUL.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for the singing not for the production.......2001-11-28

I've had this video for a number of years. Sadly, each time I watch again at Christmas I notice one more example of bad filming and writing. No doubt, Crystal is a favorite of mine, and this being from her younger days, she shines in vocal abilities and beauty. But throughout the special, the writing is just plain bad, the lines corny, and the interactions awkward. It is mentioned that Crystal's guests are friends- David Hasselhoff, John Davidson, and Michael Damian. I don't mean to sound overly critical, but she didn't exactly choose gifted singers here. There is one scene with Crystal, David, and John singing together in a church, and at the end of the number, John goes totally off-key in his harmony attempts- and they didn't even cut it!

We get an education of sorts of some different aspects of Sweden. Good attempts, but there are times when Crystal is what you could call the interviewer of sorts. She seems a bit unsure of what to say, and the scene just seems awkward. I couldn't help wonder how some of these scenes slipped through.

The scenery does have its beauty. And without a doubt, Crystal Gayle's richness, power and vocal ability lend themselves beautifully to "White Christmas," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," and a host of others. If it were an hour-long video of Crystal singing those holiday gems, I would give it six stars if I could.
