David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Gone With the Wind.......2007-06-20

One of the world's most cherished and enduring pictures, "Wind" was birthed in the mind of novelist Margaret Mitchell and incubated by the brilliant, obsessive David O. Selznick, who spared no expense in bringing this powerful, affecting story to the big screen. The ultra-lavish production features ornate costumes and art design, jaw-dropping set pieces and historical sequences (especially the burning of Atlanta, for which a Hollywood set was torched), all wrapped around the story of a resourceful, if not likable, heroine. Leigh plays the self-absorbed Scarlett to perfection, while Gable's Rhett is devilishly suave and fiercely masculine. Grand studio filmmaking at its aristocratic best, Selznick's brainchild nabbed an armload of Oscars, including Best Picture.

5 out of 5 stars Four-Disc Collector's Edition Gives New Luster to Selznick's masterpiece..........2007-06-08

Just as Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was one of the most readable works ever written, so is David O. Selznick's production one of the most watchable films of all time. Something is happening every moment--and all of the characters relate to each other in fascinating ways only apparent after repeated viewings. It's the kind of movie that transports you to a time and place that may not have existed except in the mind of its Southern author--and yet, whatever historical inaccuracies are presented here--it's a remarkable achievement and has rightly become a part of American folklore and culture.

No other film has so many memorable "quotes" from a large cast of characters--and at the centerpiece is Vivien Leigh's striking performance as the willful Southern belle. Others around her are equally impressive, down to the smallest character roles--everyone has their moment of glory with the only weakness being the casting of Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes. Otherwise, the casting is perfect--Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil, Evelyn Keyes, Harry Davenport, Jane Darwell, Victor Jory, Ann Rutherford, Rand Brooks, Ona Munson--and the wonderful Hattie McDaniel giving the most genuine display of emotion in the whole film with her "staircase scene" with Melanie when she tells Scarlett's friend what Rhett has said and done after Bonnie's death.

All of the sets, costumes, art direction and photography are of the highest order. William Cameron Menzie's production design is superb (he storyboarded the whole concept of what the scenes should look like with beautiful watercolor paintings). The one film above all others that shows what Hollywood's expertise could do with a gigantic novel when transferring it to the screen.

Much of the dialog is witty and pointed with some of the best lines delivered in mocking style by Clark Gable. An abundant amount of humor and sharp observations about human nature are present in the script. No wonder it's still the most beloved American movie of all time--not just here in the U.S. but elsewhere in the international market. It was an instant classic and still remains one, richly deserving all eight of the Oscars it won, as well as the Irving G. Thalberg Award for David O. Selznick.

Selznick would have been proud of what the Ultra-Resolution process has been able to achieve in the new 4-Disc version. Image clarity has never been as fully realized before and makes the viewing an even richer movie-going experience for today's viewers. Highly recommended.

"The Making of a Legend" is included, one of the best documentaries ever filmed about a feature film that was an instant classic with critics and public, and the "Melanie Remembers" feature gives Olivia de Havilland the chance to recall why making the film remains one of her favorite memories.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!.......2007-06-03

This is the Greatest Movie of all time because all aspects of the movie were carefully and painstakingly crafted with such precision and agility. The story is a classic and the cinematography is superb. The lighting is dream-like and the delivery of acting compliments the era that was showcased. There will never be a production such as this. Clark Gable is at his prime as the dashing Leading Man. Vivian Leigh steals all scenes and it is no wonder that she won the Academy Award for this picture. George Reeves plays one of the twins in the very early part of the movie. He is Super! This movie was well- directed and produced. It has endured the test of time. Frankly, my Dear ...You will give a Damn about this Classic. Pick it up today!

Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars gives you that cozy feeling!.......2007-05-14

Delightful yarn about an American soldier who betrays his country by providing firearms and military assistance to the enemy, then assists in the massacre of several of his fellow soldiers when they attempt to bring him to justice.

Great for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Monumental Achievement!.......2007-05-14

I truly loved this film--the acting, driecting, writing, editing, and music were all superb. The scenery, the fighting, the romance, the humor, the buffalo hunt, the developing friendship--they were magnificent. Everything about this film was believable, inspiring, and involving. I saw this movie in 1990 and liked it, but this time, in 2007, I loved it, certainly enough to want to see it many more times . Buy it and keep it.

5 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece.......2007-05-13

Occasionally the stars align, all the pieces are together and working and the end result is a work of group brilliance. DWW meets that standard. Direction, music, acting, story, art direction, everything works. The result is a masterpiece to be viewed over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but what about disc 2?.......2007-05-11

Dear viewers and reviewers,

has anybody noticed, that in the 2 disc Collector's Edition, disc two bears the same material as on the second side of disc one?

When reviewing a product should be specified as is and not by its merits alone.

Unfortunately on the copy I did receive, following special features were totally missing:

1. No Dances photo montage with introduction by Ben Glass;

2. No Poster Gallery;

3. No TV Spots;

4. No Theatrical Trailer;

5. No ...and More! as advertised so pompously on the outer jacket...

All you get, and this already on the double-sided disc One, is the original Making of... and two separate commentaries, as well as John Barry's Music Video.

That's it!

Is it a packaging error? Go figure.

But you certainly don't find the above mentioned, and advertised items.

The movie is is presented on the two sided disc in its lengthened version and in full 2.35:1 screen ratio. The sound, as correctly stated is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo and is excellent.

I don't mind so much the missing specials, since the movie alone is a tiny masterpiece in its own right, but I do object to some practices, as to print things on sleeves, that do not correspond to the actual contents of the DVD box.

The second disc is just a repeat of part two of disc one...

Sorry people, but I thought you ought to know this, before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quilty Movies..........2007-05-07

I am happy to say that the movie I got was full version no uncut scenes or deleted parts If you like romance, adventure, drama this is the movie to purchase it is a great movie I would buy from amazon again anytime its fast, great prices and enjoyable easy way to get what you want..

While Japan undergoes tumultuous transition to a more Westernized society in 1876-77, The Last Samurai gives epic sweep to an intimate story of cultures at a crossroads. In America, tormented Civil War veteran Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is coerced by a mercenary officer (Tony Goldwyn) to train the Japanese Emperor's troops in the use of modern weaponry. Opposing this "progress" is a rebellion of samurai warriors, holding fast to their traditions of honor despite strategic disadvantage. As a captive of the samurai leader (Ken Watanabe), Algren learns, appreciates, and adopts the samurai code, switching sides for a climactic battle that will put everyone's honor to the ultimate test. All of which makes director Edward Zwick's noble epic eminently worthwhile, even if its Hollywood trappings (including an all-too-conventional ending) prevent it from being the masterpiece that Zwick and screenwriter John Logan clearly wanted it to be. Instead, The Last Samurai is an elegant mainstream adventure, impressive in all aspects of its production. It may not engage the emotions as effectively as Logan's script for Gladiator, but like Cruise's character, it finds its own quality of honor. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Movie.......2007-06-27

Something you'll want to watch a few times. Story of a civil war hero, fighting his own demons,(Tom Cruise) recruited to train the Emperors Army. He is forced to confront those demons and...A lot of similarites to "THE KING AND I". I primarily enjoyed the evolution of the main character brought on by...Lots of action. Lots of personal interaction of a philisophical nature. A somewhat "deep" movie. Hope I didn't spoil it for you!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2007-06-05

I don't care what the negative reviewers think, it's just a story, make-believe! Fiction doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, nor absolutely accurate either. You'd be hard-pressed to find any fictional films/stories that are.

And if a few liberties were taken with the historical element well, that's nothing new where Hollywood is concerned is it, and the film isn't meant to be historical in that sense anyway, just uses that period as a backdrop really. Poetic licence.

A number of people have likened it to 'Dances with Wolves'. Sorry but no. 'Dances with Wolves' bored me to tears. But 'The Last Samurai' is a lovely film, very emotive and with a nice soundtrack, and some great perfomances from all concerned. The themes were ones we could all do with being reminded of.

The only things about it that I didn't like were:

1. It didn't go on for as long as I would have liked it to.

2. The battle at the end seemed just a touch not right.

I've lost count how many times I have watched this film.

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts of why this movie was not popular in the US.......2007-05-11

My profile 43 yo no qualifications as a movie critic

Browsing through the reviews (there is just too many), I stopped after finding out one reviewer who reflected on why this movie was not that popular in the US and why it it was almost not mentioned in the Oscar (that was my impression at least).. Well, the reviewer said something about the view of the "whiteman's burden" made have caused unpleasant reactions.. that could be part of the reason, but my opinion is, the movie was released at a bad political timing and was censored by Hollywood as part of the "Patriot" canpaign designed at getting moral support to the invasion of Irak

Now you may label me now as a "conspiracy paranoid", but let me deliniate some aspects too see if they are not logical.. in the movie, americans go to Japan as mercenaries with a agenda of opening the big arms trade with imperial Japan.. to make matters worse, an ethical crisis occurs to the character of Tom Cruise.. an actor who is still remembered as a patriotic pilot who shot down those dreaded MICs in "Top Gun" ( a movie destined to make the public feel good at their defense expenditure)... talk about a bad timing to reflect and see that your goverment; not only sends you to genocide the american indians, now its time to continue somewhere else!! and what's even worse, he joins the other side!!, not exactly the kind of attitude you need on the troop morale sent to invade Irak under weak grounds.. hell, was it not enough the catharsis done by all those Vietnam movies? (where Tom Cruise did a Nam veteran).. well that was then this is now... lets face it.. why such an epic movie, a superb production and what I consider Cruise's pass to inmortality in the world of true films, was given a "foreign movie" treatment??!!

Perhaps after the dust settles and a new peace period begins, this movie can be seen in its proper context..

2 out of 5 stars Pretty silly.......2007-05-01

Tom Cruise as a Samurai warrior?--my curiosity got the better of me! Be prepared to suspend all disbelief for
2 1/2 hours for this film. Drunken, guilt-ridden, Indian War veteran is hired by Japanese government to stamp out rebellion, gets captured, dries out, and over the course of a few months becomes a disciplined, fierce, Zen-like Samurai warrior. In his spare time he becomes fluent in Japanese. He switches sides, becomes a master tactician, kills countless Japanese soldiers and a few Americans along the way, and lives to tell the tale.

The scenery was nice, the Japanese actors terrific, and thankfully the incipient love affair wasn't allowed to blossom on screen, which would have violated every norm of Japanese culture of the time. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously, but the notion that a Westerner could enter this proud, ancient culture with such relative ease seemed almost disrespectful to me. Several reviewers had trouble "getting" the idea of honor portrayed in the movie--that's just a measure of how totally impossible the plot is. No Westerner could ever do what Cruise does in this movie. Strictly for fun--don't expect anything remotely realistic.

3 out of 5 stars The Good/ The Bad/ The Ugly.......2007-04-19

I can't stand Tom Cruise, but he sure was a hottie in this film. It's amazing what long hair on a guy and losing the whole Scientology thing can do for a person....

Anway, 1) I agreed with the whole sad Native American slaughter tragedy-the fact that it was horrible and I can't believe people actually did that. 2) Loved the scenery in Japan 3) Still don't/can't relate to the whole Japanese obsession with " honor" that is actually pride (Doesn't the Bible say that pride goeth before a fall)????

This movie was worth watching, but I wouldn't watch it again as it was way too sad. I can appreciate all the effort that went in to making this film

Freely adapted from Charles Frazier's beloved bestseller, Cold Mountain boasts an impeccable pedigree as a respectable Civil War love story, offering everything you'd want from a romantic epic except a resonant emotional core. Everything in this sweeping, Odyssean journey depends on believing in the instant love that ignites during a very brief encounter between genteel, city-bred preacher's daughter Ada (Nicole Kidman) and Confederate soldier Inman (Jude Law), who deserts the battlefield to return, weary and wounded, to Ada's inherited farm in the rural town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina. In an epic (but dramatically tenuous) case of absence making hearts grow fonder, Inman endures a treacherous hike fraught with danger (and populated by supporting players including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and others) while the struggling, inexperienced Ada is aided by the high-spirited Ruby (Renée Zellweger), forming a powerful farming partnership that transforms Ada into a strong, lovelorn survivor. The film's episodic structure slightly weakens its emotional impact, and it's fairly obvious that director Anthony Minghella is striving to repeat the prestigious romanticism of his Oscar®-winning hit The English Patient. For the most part it works, especially in the dynamic performances of Zellweger and Kidman, and the explosive 1864 battle of Petersburg, Virginia, is recreated with violent, percussive intensity. Those who admired Frazier's novel may regret some of the changes made in Minghella's adaptation (the ending is particularly altered), but Cold Mountain remains a high-class example of grand, old-fashioned filmmaking, boosted by star power of the highest order. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A memorable viewing experience.......2007-06-15

I saw many potential pitfalls going into Anthony Minghella's 2003 epic "Cold Mountain". One, Anthony Minghella directed the film. He's the chap who lensed "The English Patient" back in 1996. I never saw that movie, but what I'd heard and read didn't sound promising. A schmaltzy romance set during World War II? No thanks. Two, "Cold Mountain" stars Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Renee Zellweger. Ugh. I can't stand Kidman and her pinched little nose. I also don't care much for Jude Law, an actor trying to set the world's record for the most movies made in less than five years. And Renee Zellweger? Forget about it, baby. An actress known for appearing in chick flicks and romantic comedies, Zellweger's presence in this film signaled storm clouds on the horizon for this viewer. I'd rather rip my fingernails off with a pair of pliers than watch a Renee Zellweger picture. Third, and finally, I heard that the central element in "Cold Mountain" is a romantic entanglement between Kidman and Law. Again, let me utter a hearty 'Ugh'. I looked at the film's runtime, 154 minutes, and blanched in horror. No way am I sitting down for two and a half hours to watch two performers I don't like make kissy faces at one another.

"Cold Mountain," set during the bleakest hours of the American Civil War, follows the various misadventures of two characters, Inman (Law) and Ada Monroe (Kidman). The latter moves to the small town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina to care for her ailing preacher father (Donald Sutherland). To say that Ada is a fish out of water in this tiny village is an understatement. She knows nothing about farming, the economic engine that fuels Cold Mountain, and her outfits and manners are woefully out of place in the sticks. Nonetheless, she soon strikes up a rather odd relationship with the grubby Inman. The two never say much to each other nor do they spend much time together, but it's definitely a case of love at first sight. Before the two can form a more lasting relationship, the war rears its ugly head. All the young men in Cold Mountain-- including Inman--can't wait to take up arms for the Confederacy, and he soon marches off to fight the Yankee invaders. As millions of young men throughout history have discovered, however, war isn't all its cracked up to be. After Inman nearly dies in a terrible battle, he decides to desert and head back home to Ada.

Inman's journey home assumes epic proportions as he encounters all sorts of odd characters and life threatening scenarios. He runs into a shifty chap by the name of Reverend Veasey (Philip Seymour Hoffman), helps carve up a dead cow, narrowly escapes doom at the hands of Junior (Giovanni Ribisi in a performance one simply must see to believe), and protects a woman named Sara (Natalie Portman) from Yankee depredations. Everywhere around him lurks violent death and temptations of the heart, yet he continues his journey home to the lovely Ada. Speaking of our young heroine, she's also fallen on hard times. The sudden death of her father leaves Ada in dire straits. Complicating matters is a local thug with designs on her property, a thug who also happens to head up a vigilante squad. Monroe nearly starves to death until a local sends over the loquacious Ruby (Zellweger) to help bring the farm back to life. This young firecracker knows everything there is to know about agriculture, and in no time the two strike up an unlikely bond that provides the film with many humorous situations. As we shift between these two parts of the movie, we wonder whether Inman and Ada will ever meet up again. And if they do, what happens next?

I think that's enough summary to convince you that I watched the movie. I know I said I wouldn't, or couldn't, view this picture, but I forgot to take this out of my online movie queue and ended up watching it anyway. I'm glad I did. I still didn't care for the romantic angle, and I'm still not much of a Kidman or Law fan, but imagine my surprise when I came away from "Cold Mountain" with much admiration in my heart. Why? Three reasons. One, Zellweger hits a homerun as the spunky Ruby. She's a real hoot and steals every scene she's in. Two, the battle sequence involving Inman and his compatriots took my breath away. I can't remember the last time I saw such a gritty, harrowing portrayal of warfare. It's dark, bloody, grim, and deeply disconcerting. There's even a scene where an explosion literally blows a man's clothing off his body! Now that's realism, folks. The battle sequence alone would merit five stars. The last reason is the movie's depiction of agrarian America. For most of our history, our country was an agricultural nation. "Cold Mountain" really captures this America, and does so with a great eye for detail.

For those three reasons, I'm giving "Cold Mountain" five stars. Minghella's picture really is an epic journey through a dark time in American history, and such an epic deserves an equally epic DVD treatment. The two-disc set I watched contained an informative (read: worth listening to) commentary track with Minghella and editor Walter Murch, mucho deleted scenes, and several lengthy featurettes. "Climbing Cold Mountain" takes us behind the scenes to show us every aspect of the film's production. "A Journey to Cold Mountain" comes across as one of those promotional features Hollywood uses to sell a film. "Words and Music of Cold Mountain" is a concert featuring some familiar faces performing the film's score and reading sections from Cold Mountain the novel. A few storyboards, trailers, and a four minute featurette called "Sacred Harp History" round out the set. "Cold Mountain" is a winner, an excellent film that stays with you long after you watch it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "Clouds, clouds, and then sun.".......2007-05-31

Cold Mountain is a sweeping and gorgeous love story between Inman and Ada played by Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. They meet in Cold Mountain, North Carolina. Inman has enlisted in the Civil War but in the meantime he has fallen in love with Ada. They share a passionate kiss before he is shipped off but their new love is so intense, neither of them can forget about each other. Inman is gone for 4 years and Ada waits and waits for his safe return. Ada needs help on her farm so guess who shows up stealing every scene, Renee Zellweger plays the spunky and stubborn Ruby Thewes. Zellweger won a Best Supporting Oscar for her fearless portrayal of Ruby. As the film steers ahead, you see through the eyes of Inman how desperately he wants to return home to Ada but will their reuninon be happily ever after... you'll have to watch and see for yourself. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars excellent movie.......2007-04-20

I rarely do this but this great film has moved me so much that I feel I want to spread the word...this film is truly amazing in every sense of the word..the acting, the historical story, the cinematography is such that I felt like I was actually there, and most especially the actors particularly Renee Zelwegger and Jude Law were simply superb...this is my second time to watch Jude Law in a film (after loving the Holiday I chose COld Mountain)and I can really say that he is one of the finest young actors that we have today...his extraordinary range is unbelievable and looking at all the films that he has done in his still young age of 34, I can see that he will really be acclaimed as one of the best actors of our time...his perfromance in Cold Mountain was almost like he was doing Shakespeare and with his matching physical beauty, it nearly gave me chills....kudos to the director too and I am just waiting for the next Mingella movie Breaking and Entering to come out in dvd...I heard its simply awesome and stars Jude Law and Ju;liet Binoche....
C Mountain is one movie that I will cherish and will be watching again and again....

1 out of 5 stars THis movie stank!!.......2007-03-31

It should be rated X in the first place. It was like walking in slow motion. The ending was just not great. I hated this movie. Who wants to see people eat rotting cows and then be thrown into an orgy?

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully told romance.Charecters come to life........2007-03-17

I really enjoyed the movie Cold Mountain, I often watch it again. This movie to me is one of the few movies that you can really lose yourself in. The charecters really come alive and you find yourself caring about them. The scenery is really beautiful and the old time american folk music is great too.The film does have some nudity and violent scenes so its not for younger viewers. Overall a beautiful film with a moving story about a time when America was much younger.

Amazon.com essential video

Clint Eastwood (the Man with No Name) is good, Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes Sentenza) is bad, and Eli Wallach (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez) is ugly in the final chapter of Sergio Leone's trilogy of spaghetti westerns (the first two were A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More). In this sweeping film, the characters form treacherous alliances in a ruthless quest for Confederate gold. Leone is sometimes underrated as a director, but the excellent resolution on this digital video disc should enhance appreciation of his considerable photographic talent and gorgeous widescreen compositions. Ennio Morricone's jokey score is justifiably famous.

Description

By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the "Man With No Name," this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of $200,000and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold, hard close-ups, exceptional camera work captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape andthe hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Forging a vibrant and yet detached style of action that had not been seen before, and has never been matched since, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shatters the western mold in true Clint Eastwood style.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Second best Sergio Leone western???.......2007-05-20

After watching the G,B and U, I knew I had seen the best western ever. Which is saying a lot since I was a western flick junkie and saw all the westerns ever shown on tv and in the theaters.

Then came Once Upon A Time in the West.
Sergio Leone's directing and photography and Ennio Morricone's music had gone from wonderful to magnificent. The storyline was mysterious with the Man with the Harmonica's (Charles Bronson) denouement into a stunning climax with a flashback to him as a boy holding his brother with a noose around his neck,on his shoulders, and the totally evil Henry Fonda sticking a harmonica in his mouth just before Bronson collapses, hanging his brother. Then Fonda's final realization who Bronson is, but to late to avoid his own death.

This flick had a great opening scene with 3 of Fonda's henchmen waiting for Bronson at the train station. Bronson asks where is his horse, and Jack Elam replies: "Guess we are shy one horse". Bronson's reply: "No you brought two too many!" Then the rapid shooting leaving the 3 bad guys dead.

There are many scenes and characters like the opening which transcend the previous HOllywoodized westerns. You feel the dirt and dusty west and you hear it, even the smallest sounds punctuate the scene. The heroes are a bandit (Jason Robard), a previous prostitute (Claudia Cardinale), and the mysterious man with a harmonica and of few words who kills people trying to kill Fonda, saving him for the climax (Charles Bronson). And the most evil Henry Fonda, slaughtering an entire family including the small boy because his cohort says his name.

I truly believe Leone and Morricone designed and created their final western masterpiece with ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The Spaghetti Western at it's very best.......2007-05-13

Sergio Leone concludes his "Man With No Name" trilogy with this classic spaghetti western that is a very important mile stone in the evolution of the western movie. By far the most ambitious of the three movies, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" has Blondie (Clint Eastwood, the good), Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef, the bad) and Tuco (Eli Wallach, the ugly) all competing for a fortune in American Confederate gold during the American Civil War.

The film is a masterpiece in film making. It has an European art house style that most then contemporary western fans probably were not used to, so that accounted for it's wild visual style. For example there is crazy camera angles and spinning around at lightning speed making audiences sick from vertigo, which matches the characters frenzied state of mind at the moment.

Clint Eastwood returns as the man with no name, but it would seem to be out of order from the first two films, as he gets his distinctive costume in this film; but that is neither here nor there. Here is he is just as greedy as the others, and his 'good' honor is relative to the other two characters. Tuco is by far the most fun character of the film. While he is the comic relief he is also a lot smarter and tougher, and more complex than most people assume at first; most of his enemies underestimate him, and he is able to take advantage of that. Though both characters are played by Cleef, Angel Eyes is not Colonel Mortimer of "For a Few Dollars More"; here he is ice cold and totally ruthless with no conscience or remorse.

I liked this film for several reasons, mostly all the characters are bad guys, and you have to judge them by the degree they are evil. If there is one flaw it is it's over kill of dragging out the shoot outs, especially the Mexican standoff at the end, also several of the key scenes (i.e. the trip through the desert, the stay at the Union Army prison camp, and the final shoot out) were so long and seriously needed some editing. But all in all, a classic well deserving of it's reputation. I wish there was a 4 1/2 star setting, that is what I think it really deserves, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for it's cultural impact.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, and a great one.......2007-05-07

You cannot watch westerns without watching The good the bad and the ugly
Simple as that, this movie rocks :-)

5 out of 5 stars this gunman with no name trilogy is immortal.......2007-04-06

what a treat in lifetime that you could see these great westerns like these trilogy? do i still have to write a long review?

3 out of 5 stars Better than Fistful of Dollars, but not better than For a Few Dollars More.......2007-03-17

I'm gonna keep this short. I finally slogged through the entire Sergio Leone spaghetti western trilogy with Clint Eastwood, and it is clear to me that the second film, For a Few Dollars More, is the most entertaining of the three. The first film has its moments, but it's rough and low budget, as you might expect, so the second film was a jolt of fresh air and a lot of fun to watch.

In contrast, this third film--The Good, The Bad & The Ugly--was downright plodding and dull. There were certainly scenes, or parts of scenes that were excellent, such as the finale, and you can tell from the hundreds of extras and big sets that Leone had a lot more money to work with here, but so many scenes were drawn out way too long.

What's more, the movie relied too much on coincidence and deus ex machina to keep things moving "forward." I put that in quotes, because the movie doesn't have any driving motor until a little over an hour through, when we finally find out what the plot is actually about. I would have liked to have gotten there in half the amount of time, and to have finished up the film roughly an hour after that, instead of another full movie length later. I got bored a lot, and that's something I don't usually say.

Finally, for those eager to see Lee Van Cleef in this film, he gets more screen time in For a Few Dollars More, and I liked his character a LOT better in that film.

Description

A Jewish boy living in Nazi-occupied Paris is sent by his parents to the countryside to live with an elderly Catholic couple until France's liberation. Forced to hide his identity, the eight-year-old, Claude (played delicately by first-time actor Alain Cohen), bonds with the irascible, staunchly anti-Semitic Grampa (Michel Simon), who improbably becomes his friend and confidant. Poignant and lighthearted, The Two of Us was acclaimed director Claude Berri's debut feature, based on his own childhood experiences, and gave the legendary Simon one of his most memorable roles in the twilight of his career.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "If you have to direct, you've chosen the wrong actor.".......2007-07-02

The addition of "The Two of Us" to the Criterion Collection disappoints only in having taken too long to come to fruition. Besides the justly celebrated film, we are given a booklet containing an appreciative review by critic emeritus David Sterritt and autobiographical excerpts by Francois Truffaut and the film's director, Claude Berri, together with the usual acknowledgments, scene titles, and cast listing. Extras on the DVD include Berri's Oscar-winning short, "Le Poulet," historical clips of veteran actor Michel Simon--the old man--and contemporary interviews with Berri and with Alain Cohen who played the child and who is instantly recognizable forty years later. It is a splendid store, and students who are assigned--as they will be-- criticisms to write will find everything they need and more for plagiarizing.

All this and the movie, too! Simon, Cohen and Berri have been amply praised by critics with stronger credentials than my own, so I will allow the interviews and the film to speak for me. What higher praise for the acting than this from Berri: "If you have to direct, you've chosen the wrong actor." How better to summarize the film in one line than by the child's question before he meets the old man: "Why doesn't he like Jews if he is nice?" The old man is all that a surrogate grandfather should be: empathetic, loving, comforting, and playful. "I'll teach you myself," he says when the boy is cruelly treated at school, and teach him he does, from an abundant store of misinformation and prejudice, which the boy pumps from him with the impudent certainty that it is all nonsense.

When the village children and their teacher are cruel, it is casual cruelty to a stranger from Paris, not to one of the hated Jews. The war is there, too, with propaganda from the radio, rationing, and overhead bombers, and we are aware, as the child is not, of the devastating consequences should he forget his Catholic prayer, his false name, or the need to dress and bathe in private. Berri, in his interview, says that amidst much suffering, it was possible to be happy during the war, as he was and as is the child in the movie. It is no less an indictment of racism that these two escape its tragic consequences.

I don't speak French, but the subtitles are more than adequate. The dialogue isn't irrelevant, but most of the time the situation is more than clear with no dialogue at all.

5 out of 5 stars A film to be cherished.......2007-04-24

I haven't seen this movie since its original theatrical release, but it's one that stays with you forever. The great french actor Michel Simon, whom many U.S. moviegoers may remember as the crusty old locomotive engineer in "The Train", plays an aged french anti-semite who becomes the unaware guardian of a little Jewish boy sent to his farm to escape Nazi persecution. The simple story of bonding and endearing friendship despite their diverse backgrounds is made especially compelling by the superb performances of the film's two main players.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the price of admission!.......2007-01-11

When I purchased this dvd, I didn't even know it existed. I found it by accident. Already owning Phase One, I had to get Phase Two. I was expecting some videos and maybe a couple bonuses. This dvd has visual videos for non-album tracks, not to mention Rock It (which I've tried finding a copy of that for years!). Of course, all of the videos for Demon Days. All kinds of concert and award show clips (including a duet with Madonna called Feel Up from the Brit Awards).

Also, like Phase One, it gives you the opportunity to experience them by searching through a maze of rooms. As fun as that is occasionally, I prefer using the chapter list, it's easier to navigate that way.

I've read this before and I agree: "Gorillaz. Way More Fun Than Real People".

Right off the bat if you've been a fan of the Gorillaz and have their first Celebrity Takedown, you sort of know what to expect from this lot. Well not really but in terms of their DVDs you get an idea.

For those of you crying as to not getting the inside scoop as to the creators of the G-band and the processes that brought them about: What did you expect? This is a virtual band that takes themselves seriously and believe themselves to be real. Treat them as such and relish in their great music and productions.

There has never really been any background information coming from Albarn or Hewlett officially regarding the creation of the band. Hence why there is a mockumentary on the first DVD showing the band beating up the "collaborators". If you really want to learn the background info search for them on Wikipedia, and you find a pretty extensive article on them and backstories.

What we do get is of course all of their beautiful Hi Def videos, their animatics (as an animator I have always loved the showing of these), B-side visuals to B-side tracks, (which are great as well), some quick flash animations of the boyos and girl, one real Gorillaz Bite, some wicked 3D animated TV spots as well as show footage (they're 3D renditions look even better now then they did back when they toured. It's quite amazing really because these guys aren't like the Simpsons they actually do age. You mainly see this in Noodle and 2D; She's getting taller, prettier of course, and 2D while more realistic looking more zombified then ever. Russ as well, not so much for Muds.

Animation is very pricey, and while I would have loved to have seen Dennis Hopper doing his bit, they would have had to animate the band with him in order to show them working together. This is ultimately why you don't see a lot of footage with them because the animation is just too damn expensive.

As for those clamouring for clips of the Apollo shows, I don't see why, the Manchester show was much more stellar, and already on DVD, why have a repeat of that?

You also get a CD for the PC to install some Gorillaz applications, pretty much mini games to muck about with, some screensavers and some kewl wallpapers as well, but nothing you couldn't get before, unfortunately. Wish there were some exclusives to the DVD set.

All in all it's a great sequel to their first DVD set, and a great companion piece to their new book of which I have also reviewed if you're interested in.

Cheers mates, and here's to the Gorillaz film hopefully that will go through this time around!

5 out of 5 stars reject false idols!.......2006-11-07

This is a great set for the Gorillaz fan. Perhaps not perfect, perhaps it doesn't give us all we could ever dream of, but it's a great music dvd. All the proper videos from Demon Days are here, a cool edition of MTV Cribs at Kong Studios, many of the b-sides from the singles with some cool animations to go with them, things to find hiding in the studios (which are now collapsing, I don't know why... the website is like that too. It's kinda sad.)

My main complaint would be no more stuff from the Apollo shows, other than El Manana. Some Dennis Hopper would have been nice, especially, since he couldn't make it to the Manchester shows and doesn't appear on that DVD.

All in all I like it a lot, a great follow up to the phase 1 dvd. And best of all, all the great games from the website are collected on a handy cd-rom which you can load and play on your computer. And it's all playable without the disc, so if you load it on your laptop you are ready to play anywhere, even without wireless!

unfortunately some b-sides aren't represented and there are of course many things we could demand more, but what is here is well worth the purchase if you love Gorillaz. And it's fun to navigate the menus with the map monkey.

    Product Description

This wildly entertaining vintage lesbian exploitation film rarity tells the story of a pair of lonely housewives who fall into bed together after seeing a lesbian couple holding hands at a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard.

While their husbands travel for their government jobs, Denise (Elizabeth Plumb) falls big-time for her pal Adria (Alisa Courtney). Life is all peaches and cream for the lovebirds: They go horseback riding together, play mini golf and go to the carousel on the Santa Monica Pier.

But when man-loving Adria falls for swarthy hack actor, Jim (John Aprea, who you ll recognize from The Godfather), Denise is left out in the cold easy prey for the British seductress Mona (Elizabeth Knowles) who gets her stoned before trying to defile her on a pool table. Jim eventually dumps Adria and the film manages to end on what, for 1975, is a definite up-note: The two women walk into the sunset together.

This vintage melodrama has it all: Contrived dialogue and hilarious early 70s fashion design and sets to die for (avocado shag carpet, anyone?). The original posters trumpeted the film as The Tragedy of Today s Lonely Housewife, and touted it for its Insights into a young woman s deep sexual desires!

JUST THE TWO OF US was directed by Roger Corman acolyte/feminist exploitation film pioneer Barbara Peeters with Jaque Beerson.

    5 out of 5 stars yes it's adult..........2007-04-30

but heck, i'm not into hentai(explicit anime) but this is a funny story, with some interesting ideas about how a split personality would interact with itself. give it a try, but beware! it's not XXX and it's not PG-13 either!

2 out of 5 stars A bit misleading about the content.......2007-03-14

I was expecting the usual flirting content common to this genre (girl-boy interaction with possible brief toplessness followed by the bleeding nose for males). I was expecting the equivalent of an "R" movie in the theaters. The level of toplessness and sex acts (although not fully shown) puts this film as at least NC-17 and possibly "X" (I only watched to a certain point). The early part of the film warns that NOONE UNDER 18 SHOULD SEE THIS FILM...there are some people over 18 (even way over like me) that do not want to see this...I did not finish the film. The plot itself is not bad and I tried to stick with the film...it was just saltier than I wanted to see. If this is not hentai it is fairly close. Parents need to be warned...many still think anime is for kids (I have heard comments to this end)...some is and some very clearly is not. This clearly is not.

    3 out of 5 stars Its "okay".......2006-10-14

In the beginning of the movie there isn't many sex scenes, but in the end there are a lot more sex scenes. Not anything hardcore.

    3 out of 5 stars well..........2005-10-14

This isn't a bad series. Sure, it may seem devoid of plot at times, and ridden with scenes that have nothing to do with what seems should be the flow of the movie, but it's still worth watching. Buy used or borrow a friends.

5 out of 5 stars she's out of this world.......2005-06-27

Nanami for her being a shy person gets into fights and flirts with men and have sex like a slut after that she can't remember things. She has a lot of different personalities.

Since many movie depictions of famous figures are cringe-worthy, it is pleasant to report that Two of Us creates a smart, informed, and intimate portrait of two music gods. This made-for-TV feature is a fictional speculation about a day in 1976 when Paul McCartney popped into John Lennon's New York apartment by surprise. With Yoko away on business, it's just the two giants spending a day together--bickering, goofing, toking, and eventually coming to a bittersweet reconciliation. There are awkward TV-movie moments, and some psychobabble, but the film respects its characters too much to round them off into simpletons. Director Michael Lindsay-Hogg made Let It Be, so he could draw on first-hand experience, and Jared Harris and Aidan Quinn are totally committed to their roles. For an even better speculative Beatles film, check out The Hours and Times, a superb study of Lennon and Beatles manager Brian Epstein. --Robert Horton

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-04-06

A decent "what if" film about Macca and Lennon. It is pretty well made for a VH1 movie, but there are some cheesy parts. Don't be fooled by the high rating here. This is not a great film by any means...It's not bad either. Just don't get your hopes up. If you don't expect much, you will probably enjoy it. If you are expecting a great film, you will probably be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Superb!.......2007-02-04

As Edward Bloom (Albert Finney) says on his deathbed -- in Tim Burton's movie "Big Fish" -- as his son, William, finishes describing his father's death to him -- Edward smiles at Will and says that's exactly how it happens and dies.

If you have seen "Big Fish" this may make sense...if you have not seen "Big Fish" what's keeping you?!

"Two of Us" deals with the themes and issues that many Beatles fans may want to know about or interact with, and the film does an outstanding job of fairly dealing with these issues in a reasonable manner. I highly recommend "Two of Us"

5 out of 5 stars It's All In The Imagination, Luv!.......2006-03-14

I'm not a fan of biopics, particularly when most of the dialogue comes straight from the head of the script writer. In point of fact, this and other "you are there" movies require a suspension of disbelief in order to give the events a degree of plausibility. Although it was difficult for me to shake the notion that this movie was a complete and utter fantasy, I decided to enjoy it at face value. In reality, John and Paul did get together in April, 1976, during the "Wings Over America" tour. In the real life get-together, both Yoko and Linda were at the Dakota, and all four of them watched the Saturday Night Live "reunion offer" episode. John and Paul briefly toyed with the idea of going down to the studio as a lark, but all four decided it was too late at night, and the idea was quickly dismissed. After Paul and Linda left the Dakota (on a high note, pun intended!), Paul decided to return the next day by himself. It was on that return that John refused to let Paul in, stating that he had to take care of Sean, and that it wasn't like the old days, when as teenagers they would just show up at each others' homes. Paul left the Dakota, never to return.
Okay.... so back to the movie. If you're into "what ifs?", and you want a fairly realistic version of what might have happened had they met (based on their personalities and prior interactions), this is the movie for you. The John of this movie is the sterotype we have grown to know and love.....pissed off the whole movie. Paul is in his sweet, "we can work it out" mode, as would be expected of him. These fallbacks to stereotype tend to bring a one-dimensional bent to both of their characters, but the movie is well-written, and the dialogue and interaction are strangely compelling. I don't know if this "what if" scenario is as mind-boggling as say, "what if Hitler had won the war", or "what if Oswald had lived", but for Beatles afficianados such as myself, to see John and Paul interacting anytime after the breakup of the Beatles is worth the investment in time and money, and certainly worth suspending one's disbelief for 90 minutes. For further clarification and insight into the complexities of both the personal and the working relationships of John and Paul , please refer to the research of Dr. David M. Kopp, PhD. Dr. Kopp offers a perspective of the inter-relationship between the two Beatles that has rarely been touched upon in other scholarly works.

5 out of 5 stars Crafted for the Beatles fan but brilliant........2006-03-08

This is such a well made, well written movie that if you are a fan of The Beatles, you will watch it over and over again. In fact, it is so pleasant to watch, you wish it really did happen. No one really knows what happened when Paul rang up John and Joko's pad on that day in 1976, but I'm sure it was not so wonderful as this movie would suggest. It is best to treat this film as 'fiction' and go on daydreaming about how Paul and John could've been close friends again in the post-Beatles era.
The only flaw in the story was the Saturday Nite Live bit, where John tells Paul that the two should shock the world by showing up at the TV studio to play a few tunes. Paul then hesitates and says 'What if we stink?'. First of all, John never would have made that suggestion (it would have been Paul to suggest that), then in return, John would have hesitated and said 'What if we stink' instead of Paul. Thats my prediction.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure for Beatle fans .......2006-02-22

This is probably the best piece of "Beatles Fiction" ever made- because it might actually have some truth to it.

"Two of us" is a fictionalized account of a meeting between John and Paul in 1976, six years after the Beatles' official break up.

Paul shows up at the dakota one morning when Wings are in town and John isn't particulary thrilled to see him. After some initial awkwardness (which pops up again throughout the film when they talk about open wounds) they unexpectedly spend the day catching up, leading to an uneasy reconciliation (personal of course, not professional)

This movie is great because it not only captures John and Paul at this particular moment of their lives, (Aidan Quinn surprisingly plays Paul very well and Jared Harris as John is even better)but it also effectively captures the feeling of seeing an old friend who you may have outgrown but still love.

It also captured the feel of 1976 well for a low budget production and beatle fans will enjoy the little snippets of beatle lore in the script .(the saturday night live offer was great as were the stories of Ringo and George circa 1976)

The only thing that didn't ring true was Yoko's total absence- which was unlikely but probably dramatically necessary. After all, this was "two of us", not "two of us and the one who ruined our friendship!"

It would be nice if an interviewer someday asked Paul McCartney if he has seen this film. I would love to hear Sir Paul's opinion of it!
