The beauty of this entry in the Baby Einstein catalog is its integration of puppets, toys, and live farm footage to help babies and toddlers make the connection between their plastic play sets and stuffed animals with images of a real farm. As always, the spoken language is minimal, omitting the pesky verbs and adjectives that would confuse the very young. The 30-minute main program is divided into sections: barns and equipment, animals, planting crops, and harvesting. Background music ranges from "Old MacDonald" to Schumann, and DVD extras include a 6-minute puppet show and visual "discovery cards" identifying animals and farm paraphernalia with a single word. (Ages 6 months to 3 years) --Kimberly Heinrichs
Customer Reviews:
My Granddaughter Loves This.......2007-06-27
I purchased this product because my 17 month old granddaughter loves animals. Though a child's attention span is usually short at this age, she is captivated by the varied ways this subject is displayed in this DVD.
Works every time!.......2007-06-09
We use this CD to get our son to play on his tummy. He loves the part where they sing Old McDonald. It works like a charm every time.
Baby MacDonald.......2007-06-04
This is both of my boys favorite Baby Einstein! They love all the animals and the different plants that are grown on the farm. We would still be watching this if the older one hadn't scratched the DVD. This one is HIGHLY recommended by a 2 year old and a 3 year old.
Baby Einstein, Baby MacDonald, Just Divine.......2007-06-03
Baby Einstein is a wonderful line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Baby MacDonald - a Day on the Farm. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
My Daughter Loves This Video.......2007-05-17
I don't know if boys like it better like some of the reviews mentioned, but my daughter loves it! She love all animals especially horses and cows. She also loves the puppets. When each animal comes on the screen, we repeat the animal name in english and spanish. She is 17 months old and can already say doggie, horse and cow in both languages. It was a very good buy for us!

The ultimate tearjerker, this 1942 romance classic directed by Mervyn LeRoy (based on a novel by James Hilton) stars Ronald Colman as a British army officer suffering from amnesia after World War I. After falling in love with and marrying a dance-hall singer (Greer Garson), Colman's happy character begins a career as a writer and doesn't seem to mind that he doesn't remember who he is. A car accident changes all that, however, causing the hero's memory to return and making him forget all about his lovely cottage and bride. LeRoy modulates the obvious suspense element in the story (for example, is Colman going to remember Greer or not?) extremely well, building ever-so-deliciously slowly toward a huge payoff. This is one of the great date movies of all time. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Random Harvest.......2007-06-25
A deeply moving fable showcasing the superb talents of Colman and Garson (fresh from her Oscar-winning turn in "Mrs. Miniver"), "Harvest" was adapted from James Hilton's bestselling 1940 novel and became one of MGM's biggest hits. The radiant Garson was never better playing Paula, a woman whose imperishable love motivates acts of supreme self-sacrifice. And Colman, playing essentially two roles, manages to elicit our sympathy as he journeys from shell-shocked mental patient to industrialist prince, a man with a nagging sense that the hole in his past is the key to real happiness. A lush melodrama of the highest order.
Classic Movies.......2006-11-06
I saw this film many years ago and I could watch it again and again. Boy meets girl loses girl finds her again. A basic concept but done so beautifully and with such great actors.
Random Harvest- Very Good.......2006-05-29
I love this movie. I first saw it flipping through channels and landed on TCM. I fell in love with it. The true love in it is phenomenal. I definitly recommend this movie if you want to see a classic love story!
A tear jerker to remember.......2006-01-30
This is my favorite movie. It used to be on the tv all the time. That was then, this is now. I'm so glad I now own it myself. It is the story of a World War I, shell shocked man and the woman who meets and falls in love with him. When he later regains his memory, he loses his memory of her. She finds him and submerges her own persona in order to be near him. It has a happy ending, as did all movies of this era.
Love story.......2005-10-26
Another of my favourite films, A wonderful love story, my only fault is that they cast older actors to play the parts of young men and women. That aside it is a wonderful film and I personally like it as the wedding hymn is the one sung at my own wedding.

Customer Reviews:
Superb entertainment for the little Deere fan!.......2007-02-19
My son is almost 5 and has been an avid John Deere fan since he was 2. Everything is about John Deere and this video drives that home. He loves it and requests to watch it all of the time. We love that it has fun little facts about John Deere and the history of it. We will continue to buy this series for him in hopes that all of them are just as good if not better than this one!
Good movie!.......2007-01-18
I bought this DVD for my 21 month old son that loves tractors. He likes the movie but it doesnt keep his attention very well. Not many movies do though, its just his age right now. For older kids this movie would be great!
My 18-Month-Old LOVES it!.......2007-01-11
My son is not the least bit interested in any cartoons or other kids shows, but he is completely enthralled with this DVD. He loves the footage of all the tractors/farm equipment and the music. (Of course, the music will get old to adults who have to watch it over and over, but I can tolerate this DVD better than even a few seconds of Barney or The Wiggles.) It's great for younger kids, but actually very informative so I can see early elementary kids liking it too. I highly recommend this for any kid who has an interest in tractors!
Great information for young and old........2007-01-05
I gave this DVD to my 17 month old grandson for Christmas. He and his dad love John Deere tractors. When the DVD started he immediately ran and got his toy John Deere tractor to play with while he watched. He's a little young right now for it to hold his attention for the entire DVD. He left to play with other Christmas toys and came back several times. However, his dad and grandfather watched the whole thing and absolutely loved it. I even learned why the tractor I drove as a kid on a farm in Missouri was called a "Johnny Popper." It presents easy to understand information on John Deere and shows great tractors. I plan to purchase more of the series for them.
Love it!!!.......2007-01-03
My brother bought this video for my 1 year old. I thought that he was too small to really enjoy this movie, but he loved it. Owen is 2 now and we own the entire series. My Dad is a farmer so he loves to watch the videos too. It is so cute to see Owen cuddled up with Grandpa watching their tractor movie. By no means do you need to live in rural area or be involved with farming to enjoy these videos. I can't say enough about how much we like this non-violent, educational, wholesome movie.

Holiday movies don't get much darker, or more darkly humorous, than The Ice Harvest, an offbeat comedy that defies expectations. The involvement of director Harold Ramis might lead some to expect a straight-up comedy like Groundhog Day or Analyze This, but despite Ramis's fine and atypically subdued work here, it's the writers (Robert Benton and Richard Russo) who put a stronger stamp on their adaptation of the novel by Scott Phillips. Benton and Russo previously collaborated on Nobody's Fool and Twilight (with Benton also directing), and those films are similar in tone and spirit to this quirky, modern-day film noir, set on a freezing Christmas Eve in Wichita, Kansas, where mob lawyer Charlie Arglist (John Cusack) has a lot on his mind. He's just stolen $2 million from his boss (Randy Quaid), he can't trust his partner Vic (Billy Bob Thornton), he's secretly in love with the manager (Connie Nielsen) of the strip bar he owns, and his best friend (Oliver Platt, giving yet another terrific performance) is married to his ex-wife. Before the night's over, several murders will complicate matters even further, and throughout it all, The Ice Harvest is anchored by Cusack's good-natured presence in a bad-natured story that dares to combine double-crosses and bloodshed with elusive yuletide cheer. It's a strange but oddly appealing combination, not for all tastes but refreshing for that very same reason. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Perversely amusing, although the novel is better.......2007-06-29
Judging from the few dozen reviews I perused, not too many people read Scott Phillips' novel upon which this movie is based. Phillips has a great ear for dialogue, which by & large survived the transition into screenplay form. However, there are some significant differences between the novel and the film, not the least of which is the ending. Scott Phillips was involved to a certain extent in the production of the film, and I have to assume that he was OK with these alterations --- but I can't help but think that the movie would have been more effective if it had remained faithful to the novel all the way through.
Additionally, although I like John Cusack generally, I wasn't entirely satisfied with his portrayal of Charlie Arglist, who comes off as a doofus way in over his head. The Charlie Arglist in the novel may be in the dark on a lot of details, but he is not an idiot, nor is he out of control of his own destiny --- something which the novel's end makes all that much more poignant. This poignancy was missing from the movie, and while reviewers may not have realized it, perhaps this is one of the reasons that this film was not well-received.
So --- even though I enjoyed it, I would give it a very qualified four stars, owing largely to some solid performances from Billy Bob Thornton & Oliver Platt. But I understand why the opinion of others might be more harsh.
Why wasn't this in the theaters?.......2007-06-15
I caught 1/2 this movie on HBO. Got up went to Amazon and bought it! Great dark comedy. John Cusack is really good in this and Billy Bob is,, you know... Billy Bob!!! Simply put, it's a great movie. The outakes are even great. Billy Bob rehearsing a scene as "Carl" (Sling blade)is a perfect ending to a great movie.
so-so dark film..........2007-05-15
*The Ice Harvest* was an alright dark-humor film. The other reviewers here have pretty much said everything about this movie.
There's so many things going on. A stripper and her abusive boyfriend. Charlie's drunken friend who is married to Charlie's ex-wife. A cop who keeps pulling Charlie over but lets him go with the hope that he'll get recommended. A councilman is trying to buy back incriminating photos of him in a compromising position. Charlie and his infatuation with the owner of a club.
However, the main thing is that Charlie Arglist and Vic Cavanaugh have stolen over $2 million dollars from their boss, Bill Guerrand. They plan to act cool by sticking around town, Wichita Falls, for Christmas eve/Christmas. After that, they'll escape. Of course, things go wrong when Bill discovers that money is missing and knows that Charlie and Vic are involved. While Charlie and Vic are doing their best to stay alive, some truths are spilled out.
All I can say is that this movie was alright. There's nothing here that is memorable. I do not believe I'll recommend this movie to others.
WELL DONE AND WORTH SEEING.......2007-04-20
Good acting and cinematography combine in a stylish crime noir tale set on Christmas Eve in Wichita, Kansas during an ice storm. John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton star in this excellent sleeper about a couple of guys who rip off two mil plus (the "ice harvest") from a mobster but then have to wait out the storm before catching a plane to someplace warmer and far away. The perfect crime? Or a very, very bad idea? It starts seeming to be a bad idea pretty quickly and then bobsleds downhill in a hurry on the winter ice. In THE ICE HARVEST you are treated to nice performances from the entire cast which includes Randy Quaid. Director Harold Ramis does a good job keeping things moving and he is working with a tight script. Throughout THE ICE HARVEST you are wonderfully reminded of the cold, dark, icy night of the story that helps sustain that noir feeling. Notable is the excellent photography, costumes and visually pleasing sets, elements not always appreciated enough in good movie-making. Well done and worth seeing.
Film Noir?.......2007-04-13
I suppose this qualifies as film noir. It's dark comedy, with some interesting twists in it. Several sub plots that resolve in an interesting fashion. Great one liners through out. Blessed is the casting director for each actor brings the right choices from their limited bag-O-tricks to their character.

Description
Synopsis: Believing that "a man is measured by his enemies", Harry Maloney (Colm Meaney) plots to destroy George O'Flaherty, the most powerful man in town. Unfortunately for Harry, his chosen nemesis is also the town's matchmaker, and he needs George to broker the marriage of his dim but handsome son, Gus (Cillian Murphey). Being indebted to George only fuels Harry's irrational hatred more. But somehow, no matter how hard he schemes to bedevil George, Harry proves to be his own worst enemy.
Customer Reviews:
Foreign Movies.......2007-03-08
Irish movies are entertaining just because they are so different than movies made in the states. Cillian Murphy is the reason I bought it and will continue to buy his movies.
WOW!!!!!.......2007-03-02
This is the kind of movie Hollywood needs to start making. I'm so sick of American films. Blowing up buildings, sex scenes that really don't fit the film, violence for no reason. I'm enjoying films from other countries more and more and this one is fantastic. A human story told beautifully and the acting is just wonderful. None of that Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise acting but real true acting. The actors are just real ppl they aren't barbie or ken dolls, they have crooked teeth and real bodies. In addition to the fact they can really act. This is a wonderful original story and you would be a fool not to add this your collection.
"I Had The Dream Again, About The Tree" .......2007-01-06
`Bitter Harvest' released in '01 is a fascinating blending of an enchanting Irish countryside circa '24, first love and what could have been a life of quiet contentment for the citizens of the town of Skillet if not for the obsessive, irrational mindset of one mean-spirited local named Harry (Colm Meaney).
Harry is convinced that the measure of his personal greatness is measured by his enemies. Hence he decides to make the most successful man in the community his chosen adversary. Fueled by a series of dreams in which he envisions himself turning into a great tree, he devotes himself to his hatred as though fueled by a revelation from God.
`Bitter Harvest' is cinematically mesmerizing with an excellent soundtrack and wonderful performances by the entire cast. Cillian Murphy delivers a strong, though understated performance and Kerry Condon is lovely as his love interest Eileen. However the magic in this film is conjured up by Colm Meaney. Following the bizarre journey of Harry's mental machinations in an effort to destroy his would-be adversary is what makes this film so enthralling.
A Buried Jewel.......2006-10-26
As an American, it took me a bit to get used to the language of rural Ireland in the 1920's, but this film draws you into a world that seems not at all foreign after a while. Unlike the relentlessly depressing "The Field", this is a drama of real tragedies - the small, silly tragedies that we create and that are created for us- and also, of real hope. The original Irish title of this film "How Harry Became a Tree" is so much more fitting than the US "Bitter Harvest" (what were they thinking?), though fortunately the brilliant allegory of the tree is not lost with the title change. Performances are universally outstanding and poignant, the photography beautiful, the music haunting. See this film and see how the Irish continue to astonish with their mastery of language and vision.
"The future of this country--if it has any future at all--is in cabbages.".......2006-05-15
Set in the small Irish village of Skillet in 1924, "Bitter Harvest" from director Goran Paskaljevic is a tale of envy, hate and revenge. Bombastic, opinionated Harry (Colm Meaney in a splendid performance) is the bitter, mean-spirited, domineering widower who lives with his shy son Gus (Cillian Murphy). Harry tells Gus: "A man is measured by his enemies"--and in Harry's case, his sworn enemy is popular local pub owner George (Adrian Dunbar). George, however, like most popular confidant people, is unaware that he is the object of someone's spleen. Harry sits in George's pub, drinks, and watches his enemy while muttering and plotting how to destroy him. Harry's venom, at least at this point, is fairly impotent.
The situation changes when George brings a servant--a young girl named Eileen (Kerry Condon)--to Skillet to help with the workload--George's wife is pregnant. Gus is attracted to Eileen, and George offers to make a match between the couple if Harry gives him half of his cabbage crop. Harry reluctantly agrees, but then attempts to swindle George by ruining the cabbages. The situation between Harry and George spirals downhill rapidly.
This would be a dark tale indeed if not for frequent comic touches and the mythic subtext of Harry's dreams. While ostensibly, the film presents a 'small' tale of one man's tragic flaws, there's a much more universal theme at work here. Of course, one of the film's greatest ironies is that when Harry declares that George is his enemy, he's missing the point entirely. Harry is his own worst enemy--a fact he fails to see until it's too late. Harry is a great character--in one sense he's absolutely unpredictable--ready to convert each new development into an opportunity to destroy George, but when it comes to his mortal enemy, he's dangerously obsessive. It seems just a sad quirk of fate that Harry turned out to be such a bitter, mean-spirited man. There are several points in the film when one almost expects him to laugh off his desire for revenge, shrug off ill feelings and just pick up a pint. The film's cinematography is marvelous--rain soaked landscapes, and stormy skies--all accompanied by a great Celtic soundtrack--displacedhuman

A Bumper Crop! .......2005-11-03
Picture if you will (or can): a video bar, a Gay nightclub, Fresno, CA (of all places). 1985. The dance room was still thumping to Donna Summer, Madonna was only beginning to catch fire, the still somewhat new Frankie Goes to Hollywood was served up for the simple-minded dancers. In an adjacent room, a brave VJ ran what was one of the first domestic viewings of the video for "Hanky Panky," then a couple of weeks later, "Pollyann." Then & there I saw the future, and it was k.d. lang! It would be another couple of years before her first official domestic release [1987's "Angel with a Lariat"], and Roy Orbison would hand pick her for the career making duet of "Crying." Still another year before the even Nashville began to embrace her with the legendary "Shadowland" tribute to C&W balladry. All the while, she was turning heads in her native Canada, and putting neigh-sayers to shame with prophetic performances such as "Johnny Get Angry." Ultimately culminating with the excellent "Absolute Torch & Twang." Then her contribution to the first "Red Hot & Blue" for AIDS [Cole Porter's "So in Love" never sounded so good]. Finally with the hauntingly beautiful "Barefoot" from the otherwise forgettable, and admittedly boring film Salmonberries. Her own "off-handed, on-camera" commentary makes this a very personal piece of work. Sadly, there has not been a second, or even third edition of this excellent anthology to bring her career up to date, let alone mid-way, but for the rarity, and most often excellence of choice, this is a simply wonderful collection.
First Released in '91.......2004-12-02
This DVD is both fun and well put together. It's important to keep in mind that it's actually all from k.d.'s first 7 years and was originally released in 1991. Some of her newer hits, obviously then, are not going to be on it. I did not realize when I bought this that it was a re-release on DVD from '91 and was surprised but it was still a very worthwhile purchase. The vocals are great and some of the video from the 80's will have you laughing out loud.

Description
Agnès Varda, Grande Dame of the French New Wave, has made 2001's most acclaimed non-fiction film-a self-described "wandering-road documentary." Beginning with the famous Jean-François Millet painting of women gathering wheat left over from a harvest, she focuses her ever-seeking eye on gleaners: those who scour already-reaped fields for the odd potato or turnip. Her investigation leads us from forgotten corners of the French countryside to off-hours at the green markets of Paris, following those who insist on finding a use for that which society has cast off, whether out of necessity or activism. Varda's own ruminations on her life as a filmmaker (a gleaner of sorts) give her a connection to her subjects that creates a touching human portrait that the L.A. Weekly deemed "a protest film that's part social critique, part travelogue, but always an unsentimental celebration of human resilience." This Edition features the 60-minute follow-up film GLEANERS: TWO YEARS LATER.
Customer Reviews:
heart-shaped potatoes.......2007-04-08
Director: Agnes Varda
Duration: 82 minutes
When I was young I would go with my grandparents to my uncle's farm to pick fresh vegetables. The main vegetable that I remember picking is okra. Armed with my pocket knife, I was informed by my grandmother to only gather the medium sized okra pods because they were the best ones to eat. I was a bit bothered by this because I felt that the other ones would go to waste. I am not sure what my uncle did with remaining vegetables, but I assume they were often left to rot in his fields without serving their purpose to feed the populace.
Varda's film The Gleaners and I is a documentary depicting her travels throughout the countryside of France in her pursuit to find individuals who live off of the items cast off by others. Gleaning used to be a normal activity of woman in the countryside who gathered the remaining grain in the fields after the harvest came to an end, but this practice almost ceased to be after heavy machinery came to gather the food. Now, gleaners are quite often the destitute who gather the leftovers of the harvest in order to add to their meager diets. However, there are also those who glean because the activity was passed down in their blood or it is something they enjoy doing.
Traveling from vineyards to potato fields, apple orchards to the urban sprawl, and the seaside to museums, Varda's documentary encompasses the waste that is common in capitalist societies and how many farmers, winemakers, store owners prefer the excess to rot, spoil, and be thrown away instead of being used to help the down and out. However, the mood of the film is not entirely dark, because Varda does a wonderful job of depicting the beauty of castoff items and how some individuals, the castoffs of society, make due in a society that would prefer them just to disappear.
"A matter of ethics.".......2006-06-03
French director Agnes Varda's meditative documentary "The Gleaners and I" , takes a look at the age-old practice of "gleaning." Historically, gleaners were gatherers who arrived in the fields following the harvest, and then gathered the produce left behind. As a practice with an historic and a legal past, gleaning still continues to this day, and Varda records different aspects of gleaning using a new handheld digital camera.
Wisely, Varda begins with the aspects of gleaning that leap out at the viewer, and she follows people who appear in the fields to gather the leftovers. Some people glean simply because they can't stand to let items go to waste, and other people glean out of necessity. Grassroots organizations devoted to feeding the poor scour the fields for useable food items. In one instance, Varda films gypsies living in a condemned group of caravans as they pick potatoes out of the field. Not only are potatoes left in the fields due to the inefficiency of modern harvesting equipment, but potatoes that are too large are rejected. In another instance, Varda interviews a family who are harvesting an unclaimed crop of grapes after discovering an abandoned vineyard.
From the obvious aspects of gleaning Varda moves on and documents gleaning in urban areas. One group of homeless young people are accused of vandalizing dustbins when they glean, and the supermarket manager responds by pouring bleach over the bins. Others are interviewed who sift through the remnants of the marketplace, and one man maintains that in an "overconsuming society" gleaning is a "matter of ethics."
But there are people who glean for other than food, and Varda films an artist who makes sorties on his bicycle to gather discarded plunder, and a hobbyist who creates fantastic totem towers of rubbish.
There is a sense of wonder here at human nature, and the apparent need some humans have to stop waste, or to create from waste. This is a thought provoking documentary full of subtle social commentary, and after watching various gleaners at work, one cannot help but extrapolate to larger commentaries about the society in which we live. The DVD also contains "Gleaners and I: Two Years Later." This film acts as a companion piece and includes follow up interviews with people who appeared in the first film and also a protest march against the practice of gleaning. In French with English subtitles--displacedhuman
This filmed changed my perspective of today's gleaners.......2006-03-19
I "gleaned" this French jewel from the shelves of our library DVD collection. And I'm glad I did.
This film is rich in texture, deep in multiple meanings, provides a variety of real characters, a visual feast of various regions of France and how the act of gleaning is as alive today as when the famous paintings were made centuries ago.
It has given me a new appreciation for the "scrounging" that I, and others I know, have done over the years. I think from now on I'll always refer to it as "gleaning."
People and situations will look different to me because I've seen this film. The gleaners are all around us. Now they are no longer invisible.
Artistically done.......2006-01-17
At one point in this unusual and very interesting documentary by French New Wave director Agnes Varda (born, 1928!) she ties it together by showing art made from "gleaned" articles--that is, trash thrown away and made into objects of art by artists.
Of course it is trite to recall that "one man's trash is another man's treasure," but it is so. How dearly archeologists love ancient midden sites, and how much we can learn about the ancients from their trash. But Varda is here to show us that we can also learn a lot about modern people from what they throw away, and from what is gleaned, and from the gleaners themselves. I thought the guy who ate (grazed almost) as he went through the market place after closing was interesting. Clearly going through the trash is something instinctive with humans: no doubt it comes from our prehistoric past when we were hunters and gatherers.
The main focus here is on gleaning fruits and vegetables left behind by mechanized pickers. It is interesting to note that there are laws going back hundreds of years that regulate gleaners. (Varda puts a French lawyer on camera to quote some relevant law.) I was fascinated to see that there are dumpster divers in France. In America dumpster diving has been a big deal since at least the sixties. Today there are Web sites devoted to dumpster diving, and I personally know some people who dumpster dive for fun and profit. It was also interesting to see just which fruits and vegetable are gleaned from the ground and from the trees and vines and plants left after the harvest, and to hear from the people who do the gleaning. Varda shows mounds of potatoes left behind, and we learn that both potatoes too small and potatoes too big are discarded by the producers. (In America, large potatoes are not only not discarded, they bring a higher price.) Interesting too were her interviews with French gypsies and others who derive a good part of their subsistence from gleaning.
I enjoyed seeing parts of France not normally seen on the screen or by tourists. In fact in some ways this documentary could serve as a kind of travelog so widely does Varda and her camera travel about the French countryside and cities.
See this for the Grande Dame of French cinema, Agnes Varda, auteur of the innovative documentary Cléo from 5 to 7 (1961) and other films who is now 77 years old and still going strong.
Somber, elegiac..........2005-06-07
Enjoyed this very much. Again, this is one of those films that won't work for you if you've only grown up on typical Hollywood fair. This has it's own tempo and visual language. It's best viewed with an open mind. Trust the filmaker and relax and enjoy/learn from this documentary. At times its touching, sad, enlightening. This isn't just about people surviving as scavengers. That's some of it, but it's also about people making art from left objects/trash, and some have philosophical views on the waste our society produces. Also, I really enjoyed the asides about the filmakers aging. There is an elegiac thread woven through this, a homage to aging which is both somber and clear-eyed. I highly recommend it.
