Forget any off-screen impressions you may have of Mel Gibson, and experience Apocalypto as the mad, bloody runaway train that it is. The story is set in the pre-Columbian Maya population: one village is brutally overrun, its residents either slaughtered or abducted, by a ruling tribe that needs slaves and human sacrifices. We focus on the capable warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), although Gibson skillfully sketches a whole population of characters--many of whom don't survive the early reels. Most of the film is set in the dense jungle, but the middle section, in a grand Mayan city, is a dazzling triumph of design, costuming, and sheer decadent terror. The movie itself is a triumph of brutality, as Gibson lets loose his well-established fascination with bodily mortification in a litany of assaults including impalement, evisceration, snakebite, and bee stings. It's a dark, disgusted vision, but Gibson doesn't forget to apply some very canny moviemaking instincts to the violence--including the creation of a tremendous pair of villains (strikingly played by Raoul Trujillo and Rodolfo Palacias). The film is in a Maya dialect, subtitled in English, and shot on digital video (which occasionally betrays itself in some blurry quick pans). Amidst all the mayhem, nothing in the film is more devastating than a final wordless exchange of looks between captured villager Blunted (Jonathan Brewer) and his wife's mother (Maria Isabel Diaz), a superb change in tone from their early relationship. Yes, this is an obsessive, crazed movie, but Gibson knows what he's doing. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:
Great movie.......2007-07-06
I didn't know what to expect out of this movie. But I ended up really enjoying it. I would recommend watching it. But it is for adults with a lot of violence.
This movie was brutal yet very sad.
Mel's Done It Again!.......2007-07-04
A powerful commentary on the strength and weakness of society and religion.
Without giving too much of the plot away, one sees a stark contrast between the beauty, parity and unity of a humble tribal village and the prejudice, oppression and fear that rules the grandiose Mayan empire.
As has come to be Mel style, there are layers of meaning and powerful parallel relationships that have didactic purpose (kind of like the Father and Son theme that ran throughout Braveheart). One can see the other parallels he draws between today's 'Superpowers' and their attendant ostentation, control and fear mongering.
He manages to make concentric layers of meaning from the individual to the family the tribe and the nation and their indivisibility.
The ending will stun you, awaken you and make you question the status quo as well as Gibson's intentions when one considers his own religious background. It made me respect Gibson as a man who can see the the broader picture of what really matters in life and faith.
The imagery is stunning and, without knowing the historical accuracy, one is brought to a time and place without the Hollywood fanfare. Despite it's intensity Gibson manges to make you laugh as much as you cringe.
Well worth it.
Great director.......2007-07-04
The movie was done so well - a little too violent, but Mel Gibson did an excellent job.
Gruesome.......2007-07-03
I enjoyed the historical aspect of this film but felt it portrayed only the gruesome side of the civilization.
Superb.......2007-07-03
the movie was fantastic in the theater and just as wonderful at home . a Great DVD , a must have .

Apocalypto (Blu-ray) excellent.......2007-07-05
Interesting movie. Great visuals. Captions not at all distracting. Good to show off HDTV. Great ending.
Take a Trip in a New World.......2007-07-03
That Movie gives you a New Experience in watching a Movie. Soon this Move brings you to a never seen before World. Everything seems to be real as you watching the Movie. Sound and Picture are how Blu-Ray should be...
Take the Trip....
But beware, if you don't like Movie's in Original Language(Maya) with English Subtitel...but give this Movie a try
I enjoyed watching this movie in hi-def.......2007-07-03
This was the first time I have seen this movie. It has a good story line, and the battles were realistic. I would recommend this movie to anyone.
Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-29
Absolutely pristine video transfer and audio transfers make this a reference BD title.
I was not sure if I wanted to see this movie due to it being in Mayan dialogue with english subtitles. However as strange as this may sound I actually understood most of what was being said with only minor glances at the subtitling. Truely an awesome movie, if you want to see a Mayan Rambo then check this movie out.
May I just add that anyone who has put off seeing this movie because of Mel Gibson then I would respectfully suggest that in this instance you are doing yourself an injustice. I am sure Mel had a hand in this film but in all honesty after watching the extras on the disc I think even Mel would acknowledge that there were many, many people who made this film what it is. This truely is a masterpiece when it comes to engaging a predominantly english speaking audience into a non english speaking movie.
I had a couple of friends over tonight to watch it, knowing full well that they are both very anti Mel. They watched the movie and were blown away by it to be honest, the comment that I thought was interesting was when they said that they had deliberately not watched it due to Mel's involvement. However, they thanked me for putting it on as they thought it was a wonderful movie and very thought provoking for them with their beliefs.
Greatest movie since Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.......2007-06-28
Just watched this movie on standard def DVD - didnt know if i was going to like it at first but after 20 minutes in- I was TOTALLY HOOKED!!!!!!!! I cant wait to see it on Blu-Ray! Im buying this tonight!

In these eight PBS Kids Television episodes, Curious George's curiosity focuses on the animal world and takes him and the man with the yellow hat from the balcony of their city apartment to a house in the countryside. As George observes and interacts with everything from dogs, bunnies, bears, and bees to tadpoles, cats, squirrels, penguins, and pigeons, he learns about different animals and their distinct characteristics, preferred habitats, and growth and maturation while developing important skills like map reading, tracking, measuring, and sorting. Preschoolers love seeing their favorite H.A. and Margret Rey little monkey spring to life with the help of animation and are sure to be thoroughly entertained by George's cute antics and boundless curiosity. Best of all, they'll absorb some math, science, and engineering concepts while they watch. (Ages 2 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
TV show trumps movie -- again.......2007-07-02
Don't confuse tbis DVD with the movie "Curious George," which comes in a similar DVD case. These are episodes from the far superior TV show. Not that the movie isn't worth your time and money. This is just so much more so.
The product lives up to the credits: Dr. John on the swinging theme song; Ron Howard and Brian Glazer executive producing; and William H. Macy, who makes the most of any role he assumes, as narrator.
There's an urban, downtown quality to these episodes, from being drawn in the manner of classic New Yorker cartoons to the jazzy soundtrack, extending even to the live action suffixes in which a group of young kids further delving into some element in the episode. Even when they're in a rural setting, you get the feeling these kids aren't suburban spawn.
George comes off as a monkey-fied human preschooler, one of the many elements with which the writers have fun (one character calls George "a city kid"). The Man in The Yellow Hat, though often in the stereotypical Long-Suffering Parent supporting role, manages to be more than a two-dimensional character. Watch these episodes and the ones that still air on PBS and you'll learn of a full cast of characters, only a couple of which could be called "cardboard."
It's always a good morning when my daughter wants to watch, "Monkey George."
Happy 3-year-old, happy parents!.......2007-06-08
I bought this for a long car trip with my 3-year-old son, and it did not disappoint. The stories are appropriate for younger children, and I was pleasantly surprised that my son even enjoys the segments with real children after each episode. (I have tried to forward past them, and he stops me!) As a parent, I like the gentle, loving approach that the adult characters take in dealing with George's mischievous behavior, as well as the emphasis given to George's creativity in solving problems. If your child loves George and his antics, s/he will likely enjoy this video.
So Cute!.......2007-05-15
This is a great DVD! However, it is the same cartoon that you can watch daily on PBS Kids. It is great for the car though because it is VERY long - 8 total episodes with the classroom shorts inbetween. Highly recommended!
Daughters Love It.......2007-05-15
As soon as they hear the theme music, my daughters (6, 5, & 2) come running...I know I'm guaranteed two hours of uninterrupted work time since they are glued to the tv watching this DVD...THANK YOU!!
Great for on the road!.......2007-05-12
My 2 1/2 year old son LOVES Curious George and doesn't mind watching the same episodes over and over, and over again. While traveling, he's alwys asking to watch George in the car. While he likes the full length movie, this DVD collection is great to have on hand. The episodes are quick and he can choose his favorites to watch. We're looking forward to more collections of George's episodes like this in the future!

Customer Reviews:
An actual apex in film-making.......2007-07-02
The movies don't get much better than this, folks. John Woo (the real John Woo, not the body snatcher who made `Paycheck') brings us a true cinematic masterpiece that will leave you on the edge of your seat, salivating, and praying that the ride will never end.
"Give him one gun, and he's superman; give him two, and he's God," is one the characters description of Chow Yun-Fat's character Tequila; in typical John Woo fashion, he's invincible and brooding, with a tell-tale back story of sorrow and loss. Although devoid of martial arts, the slow-mo gun fights more than make up for it, and keep the movie running along a breakneck speed, a true paragon of action and intensity. Tequila is more Chow Yun-Fat than the haunted cop he's made out to be, but the rest of the characters are pretty well developed between the ample shoot outs, and there's even a neat bit about paper cranes. In fact, the paper cranes just about the most memorable scene in the movie, and are what really push the movie over the edge from just "Great" to "Unforgettably SpottieOttieDopilicious".
While Hard Boiled could have taken a wrong turn and been just a mediocre, shoot-`em-up action flick, it instead excelled, and completely redefined what "Stylistic" means to this genre: Just plain Cool.
The Bottom Line: With all the extras promised in this special edition, the Ultimate Edition of Hard Boiled is a must have for anyone not suffering from dementia.

Greatest action film of the past 15 years! By Ian Colvin, 12-year old filmmaker.......2007-05-26
John Woo's 1992 action film "Hard Boiled" is without a doubt the greatest shoot-em' up actioneer of the past 15 years. Finally Dragon Dynasty is releasing a 2-disc ultimate edition supposedly even containing a newly shot featurette where we see all the locations from the film now-a-days. It looks to be a great package that I will certainly (and gladly) display on my shelf.

Filming a love story centered on two mentally challenged people is a touching idea, one that's been attempted in films such as Benny and Joon and even, to a certain extent, As Good As It Gets. The Other Sister is another addition to the genre, a well- acted comedy-drama centering on the romance of Carla (Juliette Lewis) and Daniel (Giovani Ribisi) and throwing in some general family angst as a secondary story line. The acting is tremendous--Lewis and Ribisi both give convincing performances without condescending to their characters. Diane Keaton plays yet another charming scatterbrain, this time as Elizabeth Tate, the uptight, rich mother who wants a picture-perfect life. But good acting isn't enough here. These fine actors drown in a sea of mediocre writing, and we're left with a film with no real conflict or tension. Will Carla and Daniel make it work? Well, of course. Will mother Elizabeth loosen up about her "gay workaholic" daughter and let Carla live her own life? Do you really need to ask? There are a few cringe-worthy moments that have a sense of truthfulness, such as when Daniel stands up at Carla's sister's wedding to announce his feelings. But otherwise, these characters live in a pampered, fairy-tale world where the worst thing that happens to them is that the meanies at school put chewing gum in Daniel's bike helmet. Ultimately, this is a sweet, albeit occasionally saccharine, tale that will move those who are looking for cheerful fare. --Jenny Brown

When your heart needs some "hot chocolate".... .......2007-03-16
I first saw this movie several years ago, and I was quite impressed with it. Recently, I saw it several times on cable and knew that I absolutely had to own the DVD. This is one of those movies that I never tire of watching, especially when my heart needs a little comforting and warmth.
I think Juliette Lewis is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood, and she did a fabulous job of portraying a mentally-challenged woman. So many movies out there seem to focus on the limitations of handicapped people, but it was obvious that her character "Carla" had more potential and opportunities than Carla's parents' wildest dreams.
Every family has its own set of issues and challenges, and it was quite inspiring to see Carla and her family struggle through different issues (e.g. Carla getting a boyfriend). In a poignant fashion, the movie takes the viewer through a transition of all the adult children leaving the nest once and for all. I liked the fact that the family's problems were not solely centered around Carla's life.
A young woman challenged yet undefeated in her lust for life and love, a family changing and growing along the unrelenting wave of time...this movie is surely a classic that never fails to touch your heart!
Wonderful Movie.......2007-01-03
The movie The Other Sister- is a captivating tale of a young women trying to break free. Diane Keaton does a wonderful job as the over protective mum- who insists on controlling the young women due to her mental issues (she is mildly challenged). I would suggests this movie for anyone who knows what it feels like to be held down or placed on a leash- only allowing you to spread your wings so far. Julliette Lewis and Giovinni Ribisi do a magnificent job as lovers in the film.
Look Out for Fundamentalist Propaganda Located Nearby.......2006-07-05
I was blown away by the wonderful acting of Juliet Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi who played the retarded young adults. This was a very compassionate film about the realities of living with a disability. Disabled people desire and deserve to have the same opportunities as everyone else. It was wonderful to see the love "Carla"'s siblings and parents had for her. There were 2 reasons I didn't give this movie 5 stars. One was that Diane Keaton's character of the overly controlling mother was annoying. Obviously she was supposed to be annoying, but I think she overacted a bit and she needed better lines, she seemed to say the same stuff over and over again. Another reason I didn't love this film was because Hollywood once again compels right wing nut jobs to write reviews that portray themselves as normal and good. Sorry, Hollywood, but there will always be those of us who still believe God's word to be true. Being a right wing nut job isn't considered normal or ok in the bible. God never created it. Look it up. You are not helping people who struggle with it to be set free from that addiction and lonely lifestyle.

In the realm of revenge thrillers, you'd be hard pressed to find more ultra-violent vengeance and psycho thrills than in the creepy story of Oldboy. This Korean import made a pop splash at the Cannes Film Festival and during its limited theatrical run thanks to the imprimatur of Quentin Tarantino, who raved about it and its visionary director, Chan-wook Park, to anyone who would listen. It's easy to see why QT fell in love with the grindhouse attitude, fast-paced action, violent imagery, and icy-black humor, but it's a disservice to think of Oldboy as another Tarantino homage or knockoff. The darkly existential undercurrent in the themes that Oldboy traces over its life-long narrative arc is much more complex and deeply disturbing than anything of its kind. The movie's tagline is, "15 years of imprisonment... 5 days of vengeance." The imprisonee is Oh Dae-Su, an ordinary Joe who is snatched off a Seoul street corner and locked away in a dank, windowless fleabag hotel room for the aforementioned 15 years. Just as abruptly he is released, and thus the five days begin. Why did this happen to Oh Dae-Su? Ah, but that would be telling, and in fact we don't know ourselves until the final wrenching scenes.
Oldboy breaks into a classic three-act saga, the first of which details the hallucinatory period of imprisonment in which Oh Dae-Su wades from mild insanity to outright psychosis in the hands of unseen yet attentive captors. Act 2 is the revenge, when an entirely different tone takes over and Oh Dae-Su moves with single-minded purpose and clarity. It's this section that has gained the most notoriety, primarily for the claw-hammer dentistry scene, the one-man-army tracking shot, and the wriggling octopus that Oh Dae-Su consumes in a sushi bar (he's been dead so long he simply needs life back inside him in any way possible). In act 3, answers finally start to emerge and the sinister atmosphere grows even more profound--not without a healthy dose of extra bloodletting, of course. Oldboy is an undeniably poetic masterpiece of tension, fury, and dynamic craft. Ultimately, its epic cycle of tragedy is of the sort that mankind has been inflicting upon itself for all time. Some of the images may be gruesome, but all converge into a kind of beauty. It's in the telling of this lurid tale that these details become one and the memories of pain ultimately heal. --Ted Fry

Oh Dae-su is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and little daughter who, after a drunken night on the town, is abducted and locked up in a strange, private prison. Oldboy Review.......2007-07-04
What can I say? For the first half of the movie I was lost. It was only at the last 30 minutes the movie caught my interest. It was not the worst film I have seen but it certainy was not for me.
TRULY SHOCKING.......2007-06-26
Incredible. Shocking. Heart-wrenching. Bloody. Violent. Amazing. This movie is a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. This is definitely a "revenge" movie on all fronts.
During the movie the hunter becomes the hunted. There are surprise twists and turns that are truly shocking. This is actually a movie within a movie and it will definitely surprise the hell out of the first time viewer.
This is not a movie for those who have weak stomaches. There is such strong violence and gore -- yet it is essential to the movies plot and various sub-plots.
I gave OLDBOY 5 stars. There is so much going on in the movie and it is all tied together so neatly at the end that it just amazed me. The acting is great, the storyline is great. It is an intense action movie that will absolutely thrill any one who enjoys revenge movies.
Revenge Taken to The Extreme!!!.......2007-06-15
If you like revenge films, you will not be dissapointed with this one. This is the Craziest movie i have ever seen, especially the ending!!!
This is truely one of the best foreign films i have ever seen.
This is A dvd that you must add to your collection!!!
Boring and Outrageous.......2007-05-31
Oldboy was gratuitously violent and warped. Sadly, the violence wasn't even creative or exciting. The scenarios were also too improbable and forced -- for example, the ending scene with the tongue as well as the incestuous relationships. The only impression I got was that the director enjoyed creating a deep sense of meanness, sort of like when a psychopath goes DEFCON-1 on some innocent person walking on the street. I can see why Oldboy was highly regarded by the Virginia Tech mass murderer Cho Seung-hui.
Brilliant master work from Park Chan-Wook.......2007-05-26
Based on Garon Tsuchiya's manga, Oldboy is about Oh Dae-su, an ordinary salaryman type, who is held at a police station for being drunk. Afterwards, he is kidnapped, locked up in a hotel-like room without windows, gassed repeatedly so the room is cleaned and so he can get a haircut and clean clothes, and kept there for 15 years. "If they had told me then that it would be fifteen years, would it have been easier to endure....or harder?" His only contact to the outside world is the TV. "It's both a clock and a calendar. It's your school, your home, your church, your friend... and your lover
It's after being let out and into "life in a bigger prison" that Oh Dae-su's quest really begins. Who imprisoned him and why? He is given a cell-phone and a wallet full of money by a scraggly bum, then goes to a sushi restaurant where he meets Mido, a beautiful young woman who takes pity on him and takes him back to her place when he collapses. It also appears he has been hypnotized during his imprisonment--but why? His nemesis, a man later identified as Lee Woo-Jin, is quite the mastermind. When they first confront each other, Lee gives him five days to find out the truth, or he will kill Mido. If Oh Dae-su wins, Lee promises to kill himself.
Through clues of finding out which Chinese restaurant provided him with the same potstickers he ate for 15 years, he finds Mr. Park, the owner of the hotel where he was imprisoned. It is here that two memorable scenes occur, one a tooth torture scene where he extracts Mr. Park's teeth out with a hammer, all set to Vivaldi's "Winter" section of the Four Seasons. Using such music in such a scene adds a bit of humor in it. He then takes on a handful of Park's thugs armed only with a hammer, his fists, and keeps on fighting even though a knife is plunged into his back. The sardonic smile on his face when he encounters an elevator full of thugs is priceless. Guess what happens to them?
The theme of revenge and Lee Woo-jin's attitude, "Whether it is a grain of sand or a rock, in water they both sink alike" implies that no sin is too small for revenge. He later tells Oh Dae-su, "Seeking revenge is the best cure for someone who has been hurt. Try it. ... Once again, revenge is good for your health." But to quote Hamlet, aye, there's the rub. "But what happens after you've had your revenge? I bet that hidden pain probably emerges again." The whole point is that this isn't about Oh Dae-Su's revenge on Lee Woo-Jin, but vice-versa. As someone who holds grudges easily, I can easily relate to what Lee says.
Oh Dae-Su's introspection in seeing who it was he had offended reveals that every life is far from perfect. "Study your whole lifetime," he is told by Lee. But he also realizes that his imprisonment has changed him, as he figures Mido wouldn't like him the way he was before imprisonment. But there is hope for redemption, as seen in the scene with snow, symbolizing a clean new start.
This was actually the second film I'd seen with Choi Min-sik, the first being Shiri, but so far, this is his master performance, a creditable and credible performance as Oh Dae-Su. He later appears as the villainous Mr. Baek in Lady Vengeance. Yu Ji-Tae scores well as the devilish but weak Lee Woo-Jin, and has a cameo in LV. Ditto for Kang Hye-jeong as the cute-as-a-button Mido. She is a TV reporter in LV. And Oh Dal-Su (Mr. Park) plays the bakery owner Mr. Chang in LV.
The movie's score is another triumph. Whether it is the upbeat techno beat of the opening shot of Oh Dae-su grabbing onto the suicidal man's tie, the haunting quiet ambience during Oh's fight with Han in Lee Wu-Jin's penthouse, the Godfather-like waltz that is Lee Woo-Jin's theme, and Mido's sad theme with clarinet and strings, the music team scored a big triumph.
This is hailed as the best in Park Chan-Wook's trilogy in story-telling, film-making, acting, and techniques. One of the best films I've seen in awhile.

Irreversible begins with the closing credits running backwards before the film begins (or ends) with Marcus (Vincent Cassell) and Pierre (Albert Dupontel) being escorted out of a gay S&M club by the cops, Marcus with his arm broken and Pierre in handcuffs. The "story" proceeds to unwind in a series of single-take scenes that unfold Memento-style, with each scene giving more context to what we have seen previously. Each scenario depicts actions, dialogue, incident, behavior, and circumstances that the lead characters might have wished didn't happen, ranging from extreme violence through awkward social situations to mild embarrassment. The central character (and possible dreamer of this whole what-if story) emerges as Alex (Monica Bellucci), who suffers the worst in a very hard-to-watch rape sequence in an underpass. Semi-improvised, the scenes all have attack and power as themes, with later/earlier conversational sequences that suggest life isn't all sexual assaults in the dark, showing equal cinematic imagination with the horrors. Arguably, this is not a film most would subject themselves to twice, but it is something that stays in the mind for days after viewing, sparking far more ideas and emotions than most wallow-in-nastiness pictures. --Kim Newman
Customer Reviews:
Not for the faint of heart.......2007-06-24
The title of my review is no joke. This is a harsh film that should be treated as such. It is a grueling tale told from end to beginning, like that of "Memento."
It's dizzy effects in the beginning fade to subtle as the story unravels itself. Be warned that the first half of the movie is extremely violent from scenes of a bloody beating to a horrific-ly realistic rape scene involving Monica Bellucci's character.
As jarring as the movie is, it should not be swept under the carpet as some celloid trash. It delves deep into one's being and makes the viewer say, "That couldn't possibly happen in 'real' life." Yet, revenge is very real in every sense of the word.
Kudos to Ms. Bellucci for taking on such a dramatically daring role that no other "Hollywood" actress would even dare to do. It seems so real what is happening to her you want to cry and/or kick the hell out of the man that brutalizes her.
very disturbing.......2007-06-20
i went to see this movie at the cinema hear in mtl qc when it came out, the 1st i did coming out of the movie was to take a shower !!!! this is
the most f... up movie i saw in my life & i saw alot trust me . i dont
recommend this movie to every one.
Definately not a couples film, or chick flick. .......2007-05-02
"Irreversible" is like no other.
I was lucky enough to originally see this film on a large cinema screen as part of the "French Film Festival" in the year of it's original release.
I didn't know much about it, other than the rumour that it contained a fairly vicious rape scene. That it did.
Five minutes in, it has some other stuff as well that took me completely by surprise and jolted me to attention. I've seen my share of sick stuff, but this was something totally new.
"Irreversible" is incredibly brutal and nasty, with some amazing performances from the cast involved.
Definately not for the kiddies, or even some adults. In fact, even most adults. It's a tough watch.
im seasick.......2007-04-10
was forwarned about this one..but wanted to experience it myself. the directors camera style was very hard to take but overall added to the feeling of control being taken from you. great performances by all the actors. the reverse storytelling was used to great advantage. subtitles not to hard to follow..overall a shocking unexpected experience i would give 5 outa 5 to.
Will The Beauty Save The World?,.......2007-04-05
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
The plot of the film is simple: a woman (Monica Belucci) is brutally raped by a stranger; and her boyfriend (Vincent Cassel) and ex-boyfriend (Albert Dupontel) who are best friends set out for revenge. What is crucial, the story is told backward.
The most obvious success for this film is the directing by Noe. He has crafted a nightmare that is both original and horrifying. If the inferno exists somewhere, one of its circles definitely looks like the "The Rectum" bar, and the other - like the underpass where Alex (Monica Belucci) was brutally sodomized and beaten for long nine minutes that seemed as an eternity. The pulsing score that accompanies the film contains, for the first sixty minutes, a constant 27-hertz tone specifically designed by Noé to cause nausea in the audience. It felt like someone was constantly drilling the holes in my head. The director creates the scenes of such pain and violence that makes "Natural Born Killers" look and feel like a puppet show. One of these is a scene where a man gets his head bashed in with a fire extinguisher with the camera never turned away and the sound is amplified.
The movie shocks you, and then it goes and shocks you even more when there is no violence on the screen. I broke in tears during the bedroom scene - so much love, tenderness and desire Monica and Vincent had for each other. They did not know what was ahead; I did.
In the end, one cannot help questioning the very fragile, illusory nature of happiness, how easy it is to destroy everything. Is it a blessing or curse not to know what lies ahead and not be able to change the future?
Dostoevsky said almost hundred and fifty years ago that the Beauty will save the world. I don't know. Not this world. Not during my time.
"Irreversible" is a shocking anti-violence film; one has to decide whether he or she wants to see it. I personally think it is a must see but I would not be surprised if a lot of viewers refuse.

Equal parts weepy drama and soap opera, After the Wedding is a beautifully filmed story centering on Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen, Casino Royale), a Danish man working at a orphanage in Bombay. Just when funds have run desperately low, Jorgen (Rolf Lassgård)--a wealthy benefactor--promises to donate millions of dollars to the orphanage. But there's a catch. Jacob must collect the funds himself in Copenhagen... and attend the wedding of the eccentric millionaire's daughter. But once Jacob meets the benefactor's wife Helene (played by a radiant Sidse Babett Knudsen), it's obvious to the viewer that the two have a complicated history. It's also likely that her daughter Anna (Stine Fischer Christensen) most probably is theirs. So why did Jorgen invite Jacob to Anna's wedding? Does he know Jacob is Anna's father? Is something nefarious in the works? The thought-provoking film was Denmark's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 Academy Awards. Subtitled in English, the Danish picture is well helmed by director Susanne Bier (Brothers), who manages to keep the film from delving into over the top histrionics. Mikkelsen is particularly good, whether he's channeling his anger at having been shut out of his maybe-daughter's life for the past 20 years, or having to grovel a bit to get Jorgen to donate the funds as promised to his orphanage. The relationships here are messy and often uncomfortable. But they also ring true to life. --Jae-Ha Kim
Description
Far from home, Jacob (Casino Royale villain, Mads Mikkelsen), runs a struggling orphanage in one India's poorest regions. Desperate to save the orphanage from closure, he returns to Denmark to meet Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard) a wealthy businessman and potential benefactor. What appears to be nothing more than a friendly gesture to attend a wedding sets in motion an increasingly devastating series of surprises, revelations, and confessions that will forever change their lives.

A Wonderful Film.......2007-06-27
Mads Mikklesen delivers a wonderful performance in After the Wedding . After the Wedding has a simple concept but it's anything but simple minded. Sussane Bier gets great performances from all her actors and the result is one of the best movies of 06'.
Mikkelsen and Lassgård put this film on this year's Oscar nominee list.......2007-06-25
A previous reviewer calls 'After the Wedding' a tale of 'stupendous coincidence.' I love that phrase. Indeed, that's what the key event in this movie feels like. The thing is, though, it's simply not the case. Over time, we learn and see that Rolf Lassgård's Jørgen is anything but a man to leave things to coincidence. The viewer is let in to slowly see his charm, his shrewdness, his business acumen...and the little scheme he's put into play between his family and Jacob, as portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen ('Le Chiffre' to 'Casino Royale' fans).
As for Mikkelsen, what can I say? He's Denmark's George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, all rolled into one. The guy can act, too. You'll see the phrase 'soap opera' used on these pages. In the hands of lesser actors, yes. But not with Mikkelsen and Lassgård - their performances are what landed this film on this year's Oscar nominee list. [As good as it is, no way it was going to win out over 'The Lives of Others' - to me, that's the best single film of the decade so far.]
Great Film.......2007-06-22
Phenomenal film that well-deserves all of the positive press I had heard about it. A story of stupendous coincidence as a Danish man running an orphanage in India returns to Copenhagen for the business end of a large donation. This movie so simply could have been a narrow and uncomplicated story but each moment peels another and yet another unexpected layer. The acting was absolutely marvelous as relatively pigeon-holed characters begin to blossom into more dynamic people. Sensational movie but the white subtitles are a real strain.
Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-28
This subtitled movie (thought the scenes in India are in English), is a very enjoyable look at the radically different lives that one man leads in India, and the Denmark he left behind. Mads Mikkelsen plays Jacob (with a 'c', it is noted) who helps run an orphanage in a desperately poor India. An offer comes in from a rich Dane, Jørgen, who is thinking of supporting the charity. Jacob promises to return in time to one of his charge's, Pramod, birthday. He reluctantly leaves his life in India helping the children, puts on a suit, boards a well-appointed plane and gets a chauffeured ride to a luxury hotel. It's as much of a culture shock as one can imagine.
The rich Jørgen's life is one filled with board meetings, a mansion, wealthy friends and relatives, every one of whom could make a difference in the poverty of India. However, there is a wedding to plan, with Jørgen's daughter getting married to a young man of the firm.
Several plot twists ensue that make Jacob question the purpose of his life, and which world he wants and needs to live in. It turns out his love and compassion is needed in both.
Recommended.
"Can't Buy Me Love".......2007-05-15
`After the Wedding,' Denmark's "Best Foreign Picture" nominee for the Academy Awards has a lot going for it. Even if there is a soap opera feel to the scenes and the story, the quality is head and shoulders above any serial. Not to mention the fact we get six months of development in one movie. Solid performances, and camera shots that capture every revealing reaction give the story a magnetic interest.
The film begins in India where Jacob Pedersen (Mads Mikkelson) works with the impoverished. He feels at home with the children, but he goes back to Denmark to raise funds for the orphanage and get reacquainted with his family. At home his former love Helene (Sidse Babett Knudsen) has married a tycoon, Jorgen Hanson (Rolf Lassgard), someone Jacob is able to solicit funding with ease. Once they meet, he is invited to their daughter's wedding. Much like `Rumor Has It' with far less laughs, yet more substantive development, Jacob finds out at the reception that he has more at stake at home than he previously thought. From there he is reattached to deceptive Helene, and both must sort out the bitter resentment they feel for one another. (Did he have one affair as he says or was he the philanderer by her account?) Toasting her mother and step-father at the wedding, the bride Anna (Sidse Babett Knudsen) later comes to grip with life-changing information in her own life.
Skillfully sorting out the relationships and priorities of the key players, `After the Wedding,' presents a bitter-sweet story with memorable characters and interesting circumstances. One of the merits of the film is how it defines poverty in India and compares it with a different kind of impoverishment for the wealthy. Jorgan's problems wouldn`t make us trade places with him for the world. Similarly, one of the boys at the orphanage reminds Jacob that he doesn't even like the wealthy. Another ironically says, "If I were rich, I'd be happy." Watching everyone come to grips with their lives and barter for stability make `After the Wedding` a revealing family portrait.

Description
Unflinchingly honest and boundlessly lyrical, the exploration of sexual awakening in You Are Not Alone was a turning point in world cinema. At a Danish boy's boarding school in the late 1970s, Bo and Kim are naive young classmates, whose friendship blossoms into a childlike love affair. When their friend is expelled for a prank involving lewd posters, the student body bands together to strike against the school and its authoritarian headmaster. Lasse Nielsen and Ernst Johansen's classic film is a groundbreaking meditation on innocence, rebellion and love.
Customer Reviews:
a cute movie.......2007-06-27
very watchable, it's cool to see the 1970's, as i never lived during that time. it's just a nice movie. a good message. there's no sex in this movie.
love in it's purest form.......2007-02-12
A true love develops between two boys. A beautiful story.
realistic, loving and caring movie.......2007-01-31
I love this movie, reading between the acts and the words it is a real love that hopefully will stand against the conservative world. touching many points and aspects in the characters. 5 stars for the ending. recommending it to every "coming up boy" to watch!
You are not alone.......2007-01-10
The DVD version of you are not alone is an improvement on the VHS version. Better clearer subtitles, much better picture quality. The relationship that blossoms between Bo and Kim is very realistic, passionate and touching. The movie gives glimpses of the other boys relationships, such as the boy making out in the cellar with an older girl staff member and later he is seen by BO french kissing and making love in the shower with another slightly older boy, it showcases the boys bi-sexual identity.
Though most of the movie follows Kim and Bo. The shower scene with Bo and Kim is a favorite for me as is the final scene with them french kissing, I like this because I know very few American film makers would touch the subject let alone have a nude scene. It is my favorite coming of age movie or gay youth movie. Watch with an open mind and enjoy. The closing scene is very passionate, lots of kissing and hugging, just the thing to make the conservative anti gay crowd reel. I love it.

Pioneering "coming of age" film for all.......2006-12-28
Like so many films that have "gay" themes, this film is wrongly seen by some as a homosexual "coming of age" story. But it is not that simple. As shown very realistically in this beautiful movie, there is a lot of confusion among kids--and maybe there is more today than there was in the late '70s when this movie was made. Anyone who ever suffered from that confusion, whether arising from sexual, social, or other anxieties, will enjoy this film. It truly has a little of everything.
Is it a little too "erotic" for American sensibilities? Maybe, but those who are realistic about sexual experimentation will not have any problems with the very tastefully suggestive depictions of that. The young actors, male and female, are charming and convincing.
And there are brief adventures of the kind that typically occur in boarding schools and novels or films about them. But they are done
well and also reveal something of a "European" view of how various crises and problems in this kind of setting might be handled.
Grady Harp's review is right on target. The two protagonists, Kim and Bo, represent not necessarily gay kids, but any kids who are lonely, confused, alienated, and yearning for love and acceptance. They could be "geeks" or any other minority. And the depictions of "bullying" in schools and other settings, in a film from over twenty-five years ago, are eerily prescient.
But there are also many scenes of understanding and solidarity among the kids that are heart-warming. The final scene is really moving, especially when you understand that the whole school is behind it.
It's too bad that the DVD release does not offer many "extras", but it's a bargain.
I even like the "pop" music.
