4 out of 5 stars Touching piece of cheese..........2007-05-21

As far as Christian movies go, this is an excellent movie with a great plot. However, it did seem a tad bit cheesy in places...though, this is to be expected in most Christian movies. This aside, 'The Climb' is a wonderful movie that will touch even the hardest of hearts.

5 out of 5 stars Self Examination.......2007-05-06

This movie caused me to reflect on who I am, where I am going and why. It caused me to examine my motives, morals and faith. The scenery, storie line, actors, and tear-jerking scenes were inspiring. A well done family movie that I am anxious to view again.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Christian Evangelistic/Action Film I've Seen.......2007-01-31

I'm giving this film 5 stars because it is in the limited offering "Christian" section; but I would give it 4 stars even stacked up against secular movies with a lot more money spent on production. This movie has everything; an unusual story, beautiful scenery, good acting, comedy, lots of action, heroism, sacrifice, character change and development, biblical values balanced by fairly realistic presentations of non-believers, a touch of racial and cultural tensions, and a clear presentation of the message of Jesus. The Christians show flaws and failings; the non-Christians aren't stereotypes. It's family-clean and doesn't compromise to tell its story, but it tries to stay in touch with the sinful side of life as well.
The rockclimbing story is handled with high production values. As a beginning/intermediate climber, I didn't see anything in the climbing that made me say, "Oh, come on!" Many scenes look authentic and provide thrills and frights. The interaction between the two main characters is believable.
This is just a really good Christian film, even if you know nothing about climbing. Buy it, enjoy it, use it for outreach. It might even inspire you to learn to climb :) ("He is my Rock and my high tower . . .)
Warning: be careful of showing this to young kids. It does have plenty of dangerous scenes, a fight, drinking, and a death. Great for teens, though.

Description

This informative video provides a comprehensive six-month training program for the novice-to-intermediate level alpine climber who wants to climb Mt. Rainier and other high-altitude peaks. Included in the video are guidelines for aerobic, anaerobic, and climbing-specific training including flexibility and strength exercises selected for high-altitude mountaineering conditioning requirements. If you have been searching for a coach who climbs or for an exercise program specific to glacier travel, you'll find plenty of excellent training ideas on this video. Mountaineer coaches and instructors Doug Schurman and Courtenay Schurman demonstrate the exercises with the help of climbing model Susan Wright.

In this 66 minute video you will learn details about the following training components: Aerobic training - Including alpine, outside, and indoor options along with suggested targets to try to reach by month 5.

Flexibility - Including stretches that are most applicable to the mountaineer and how to do them outside.

Strength training - Demonstration of exercises selected to help you with particular aspects of alpine climbing, showing traditional weights and home training options such as jugs of water and weighted packs.

Anaerobic training - Recommendations and guidelines for ways to raise the anaerobic threshold.

Climbing specific training - Specific training tips to emulate the physical requirements of the climb for optimal preparation.

The video concludes with a periodized training program specifying how to incorporate the components listed above over a 6-month period. Whether you have access to mountains or not, this video will provide you with all the physical conditioning information you need in order to optimally prepare for your climb.

5 out of 5 stars Cool DVD on Mt. Rainier climbing.......2007-04-13

We love to provide our guests with movies and books on Mt. Rainier. We picked up three of these to put one at each of our Mt. Rainier cabins at Three Bears Lodge.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Program for Climbers.......2006-10-17

This is a great DVD for anyone who wants to do climbing-specific training in anticipation of doing a major mountain climb - or any climb! It provides the necessary tools to create your own six month fitness rogram, with or without access to a gym, and explains how the exercises relate to specific climbing activities. I have used Body Results training to climb two major peaks, and highly suggest this DVD to others planning to do the same.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, don't waste your money.......2006-09-01

I am planning on climbing Rainier next summer and I was intrigued by this DVD. Luckily I did not buy this. I rented it from Netflix, and even their ranking system had rated it extremely low. While I agree the stretches and workouts are beneficial, anyone with any sense, experience, and comfort in a gym will not need this product. There are plenty of free programs out there on the net, keep your money.

5 out of 5 stars Climb.......2004-02-20

I used Train to Climb Mt. Rainier to get me ready for an Aug. 2002 climb of Mt. Ranier with Shape Magazine. It was a great tool and provided me with all of the information that I needed to climb. It gave me detailed information about all aspects of building physical endurance, including stretching, aerobics, strength training (weight lifting), and anaerobic training. The program includes specific instructions on how to begin training in month one and how to continue developing strength and stamina each month until you are ready to taper your workouts before your climb. The program provided a variety of exercise choices which helped to keep my motivation from waning. Another great aspect of the program is that it provides you with a way to train at home. This is awesome when you live thirty miles from the nearest gym. I felt like I had two personal trainers which is amazing when you consider I live in a rural town of four hundred people.
I would recommend this program to anyone preparing for a big climb. On my climbing day, I felt great. All of the hard work and training was worth the effort as I sat on the top of Mt. Rainier and looked out over the horizon. There's nothing like the magical feeling of being on top of the world! I truly believe that Courtney and Doug's advice helped me reach the peak!

5 out of 5 stars Met all of my expectations.......2004-02-09

I got the Ranier Training DVD and it met all of my expectations. It defines a highly sophisticated 6 month program utilizing the latest concepts in developing fitness. The parts of the video showing some sport specific, but not common known exercises are particularly valuable.

I also really like the fact that there was a link to a webpage that listed the entire 6 month training program so I didn't have to try to write it all down.

4 out of 5 stars How high can you climb.......2000-08-29

In "The Climb," a boy named Danny wants to climb a tower in order to prove to his father and the bullies that he's not a coward. He finds an old man that wants to commit suicide. Since Danny (Gregory Smith) won't get the gun for the old man, the man agrees to help him get to the top of the tower just as long as he thinks he can get back down. But there's one thing that goes wrong, Danny breaks his arm a few days before he plans to climb to the top of the tower.

"The Climb" is a little slow getting started, so you probably won't get real interested in it until Danny and the old man actually go to the tower and start carrying out their plan. About the only thing that will keep you interested before then is the old man's performance, he does a great job and so does Danny.

If you like drama movies, I would recommend seeing "The Climb." It is interesting and toward the end of the movie when the climb is taking place, it has some good suspense.

In a world where marketplace spin and the one-line pitch meeting has diminished movie-making to deplorably predictable levels, it is a joy to see Bob Swaim's multi-leveled and richly-textured new film. Instead of Hollywood clichés and cardboard figures, he gives us believable characters and situations alive with all the nuance of real life. Defying all easy categorization, THE CLIMB is destined to become a classic. -William Hjortzberg author (Falling Angel, Legend, Angel Heart)

The Climb' is a moving coming-of-age drama with a juicy performance by John Hurt as a cantankerous, chain-smoking, bourbon-slugging geezer. David Strathairn displays his typical understated brilliance playing a father who redefines heroism. -Annette Insdorf, Columbia University Film Department

4 out of 5 stars A trekker's presentation.......2007-03-29

This is a very interesting presentation --not polished-- but very informative from a boots-on-the-ground trekker's perspective.

I'm hoping they produce a DVD for the Machame-ascent/Mweka-descent. Don't forget to visit their website ([...]); it's loaded with information.

I have the other two popular DVDs on Kilimanjaro ('To the Roof of Africa' and 'Volcano Above the Clouds'), but this one might be my favorite due to it's unique point-of-view.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for those considering a Kili trek - but a bit rough around the edges........2006-08-22

If you're considering a trek up Kilimanjaro - this video is a nice overview of the Western Breach route, and informative on what to expect from a competent outfitter. Take notes and you'll probably have some good questions to ask an outfitter (regardless of the route you take) before making your deposit. For that reason alone it is worthwhile.

The only caveats:

- It's produced by a Kili outfitter. Naturally there is some bias toward their company. That element doesn't overly dominate To their credit, they seem to offer some compelling services - an all-inclusive package, chemical toilets, showers, that many outfitters omit.

- This is not a glitzy docu-film like the IMAX video that's available. It doesn't really compromise the video - but it's worthwhile to have your expectations in check. Most of the video is shot handheld with associated narration, and some of the maps and similar are actual video of a paper map. The upside to this is that it comes across a bit more 'real' than a high-dollar production.

If you're considering a trek up Kilimanjaro and haven't done a lot of research - this is probably a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must before you climb Kili.......2005-09-07

I have gone up twice ... the second time with Kiliwarriors. The IMAX movie is instructional about the mountain but does NOT show the climb the "way it is". This DVD shows the routes clearly on maps and conditions to expect and food, tents, etc. Maybe more importantly it shows some of the often overlooked dangers. It will show you questions to ask a potential outfitter. It goes through a recommended guide for equipment to bring with you. Having gone with Kiliwarriors I now know they are the supreme caretakers of climbing companies bar none. I highly recommend the DVD and the company that made it.

20 years after Stone Monkey was made, it is still widely regarded as possibly the best climbing film ever made. Johnny Dawes is one of the most exciting climbers ever to emerge on to the British scene - a Nureyev of the rock, dynamic and balletic. In the 1980s when climbing standards were leaping forward, Johnny stood out for his understanding of the rock and his unique approach. This award-winning video traces Johnnys boyhood influences and films him on his gritstone masterpieces and on the spectacular Quarryman groove in North Wales. Winner of 5 international film festival awards.
