Description
This amazing cult-mondo sex oddity from acclaimed adult film director Carlos Tobalina is a sight to behold! Cross one part "hardcore" and one part "mondo" film, throw in some unbelievable music, then mix it up with some crazy editing (the opening credits appear 40 minutes into the film) and you have REFINEMENTS IN LOVE!
A penetrating look at 1970s sexual culture, REFINEMENTS IN LOVE is a jaw-dropping, pants-dropping film unlike anything you've ever seen before. Narrated by cult actress LIZ RENAY, this film is chock full o' nudity and sex. You'll see a woman hypnotised into the ultimate sexual pleasure, the sexual benefits of talcum powder(!!!), and even director Tobalina himself giving us a glimpse of his chic 1970s California mansion while he's filming one of his famous "adult" features. Of course, you want to see this... as long as you're a grown up! This "adults only" entertainment explores the pleasures of the flesh in a most unique and titillating way! Eagle-eyed adult film fans will also notice a rare early appearance from adult film starlet, Rene Bond!
Customer Reviews:
Sexual culture doc that has it ALL !!.......2007-04-30
This is one wacky film relic. If you made a check list of all the camp ingredients you would want in a retro mondo sex movie doc -- you would end up with REFINEMENTS IN LOVE.
Phony sex institute acknowledgements? Check. Thematic folk songs with pointed lyrics? Check. Movie THEME complete with string orchestra? Check. Weird credits (as in they don;t appear until 40 minutes into the movie! That must be some kind of record...) Check. Verite footage of sex movie premiere circa 1970? Check. Interview with director ludicrously superimposed on a TV as if it is being featured on the "news"? Check. Bogus sweaty doctor using unorthodox methods to cure a frigid female? Check. Talcum powder sex scene? Check. Wildly inflated claim of social importance to sexual freedom? (hint: atomic explosion as negative result). Check. Mind-stopping narration by celebrltiy? Check. Early uncredited appearance by legendary sex kitten? Check.
I could go on but you get the idea. This one is truly packed with entertainment value. Plus it is actually an interesting document of that era (besides the laughs), and last but not least, it delivers the goods skin-wise too.

Why bother?.......2007-04-09
It's hard to tell just what the point if any this movie was trying to make. There are scenes which contain cheap disjointed porn and then moral comments
This "film" really was a waste of money and at best should be rented and not bought
Vintage Swedish erotica from 1975... Starring teen hottie Marie Forså... Disappointing DVD transfer.......2007-02-16
This was rather disappointing. The film is touted as a modern day re-telling of the classic twin novels "Justine" and "Juliette" by the Marquis de Sade. The novels are classics of S&M literature as well as socio-philosophical treatises in their own right. Sadly all the sadomasochistic content has been stripped out from this film version. What we are left with is the basic story outline; two orphan girls left alone in a cruel world to fend for themselves. The philosophical underpinning, that this world rewards vice and punishes virtue has also been cast aside to accomodate the more socially acceptable conclusion - virtue will be rewarded. The scene has been updated to 1970s Sweden. Sweet, innocent Justine is played by Swedish teen hottie Marie Forså and Juliette is played by Anne Bie Warburg. And they are the main reasons to watch this film.
The film serves mainly as an excuse for these delectable hotties to get naked and naughty. There is a lot of nudity and hardcore sex. Harry Reems (Deepthroat) is not here for nothing. This is triple-X material which I didn't expect to see on Amazon but I'm not complaining. Marie Forså appears under the name Maria Lynn. She is adorable but not at her most winsome here. As Justine the prude, she sulks too much and is unhappy most of the time. When she finally does smile, the screen literally lights up. To see her at her finest, watch her in Joseph Sarno's "Girl on Girl" trilogy (softcore).
The film itself is played out as a sex comedy. Harry Reems is Don Miller, an American millionaire who has willed that whichever prostitute he dies in the saddle with, will inherit his entire fortune. Juliette (Warburg) works in the brothel where he cavorts and she, like all the other girls, try their darndest to get him to croak in the sack. Of course, it is finally up to the sweetly innocent Justine (Forså) to do the trick. Shoring up this pretty lame plot are generous helpings of wholly gratuitous sex - 70s vintage with bushes galore and as many blowjobs, cumshots and penetration-shots as in any standard porno flick. The angelic Marie Forså of course, as per her contract, is never shown in anything explicit. Still, she is the reason to watch this and she doesn't disappoint.
The film transfer from Impulse Pictures is disappointing. It is presented in its original 1.66:1 aspect ratio, pillarboxed into a 16:9 anamorphic frame (enhanced for widescreen TV). However, little to no restoration has been done. The print looks old. Nicks, specks and scratches abound. The picture is grainy and soft. The colour is faded and dull. Black level is set to a dull grey. Colour-timing is wholly inconsistent. Flesh tones vary from shot to shot, ranging from pallid white, to pink, to purplish, to orange. Some scenes have a cold bluish cast. Others have a warm yellow-orange look. It may not trouble the average porn viewer but it will drive cinephiles up the wall. I will not be buying anything from Impulse Pictures again. This film needs a proper restoration under the likes of Blue Underground or Severin. It is presented with its original Swedish mono track. Optional English subtitles are provided. There are absolutely no Extras. Not really recommendable unless you're a dedicated fan of the lovely Miss Forså and even then, I'd gladly dump this version for a new remastering when it comes along.

Description
A young girl named Anita (Lindberg) suffers from psychological problems and sexual promiscuity due to her troubled childhood and uncaring parents. She meets Erik (Skarsgård) , a student at a local university, who tries to help her through her troubles by analyzing her past relationships. After revealing her most intimate and violent encounters to Erik, he determines that, in order for her to overcome her nymphomania, she first must experience a "true" orgasm! ANITA is a classic of controversial Swedish exploitation starring cult film starlet Christina Lindberg (THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE) and a very young Stellan Skarsgård (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END) in one of his first ever film roles!
Customer Reviews:
Cult starlet makes good in previously hard to see film!.......2007-06-03
I had the opportunity to see this film at the American Cinemateque screening with Ms. Lindberg last year. With a few noted exceptions (Thriller, Sex & Fury - only easy to see since the DVD releases), her films have been incredibly difficult to see in the US and I feel this is one her fans should enjoy. Instead of a violent actioner like those two films, this one plays as a social commentary/soft core film about a young nymphomaniac trying to overcome her weakness for men. It sounds a bit more salacious than it actually is. Christina is a wonderfully fragile as she is in the more dramatic scenes of the other moments and Stellan Skarsgard is fine in a very early role. All in all, my second favorite film of the 5 I've seen by my absolute favorite cult starlet. If your a fan of Lindberg, also look for Exposed/Exponerad, due from Synapse in November (probably). A very odd film, very different than it was depicted in the trailer (availble on Synapse's 42nd St. Forever V1 trailer comp as The Depraved), but still worth checking out!

Description
The sexy box-office smash hit of 1970 makes its U.S. DVD debut from Impulse Pictures. Schoolgirl Report 1: What Parents Don't Think Is Possible is the first in a continuing series of erotic exploitation films from Germany.
After an 18-year-old student seduces someone during a school outing, the case goes before the "Parent's Association". One of the members tries to defend her actions by giving other "examples" of this behavior he has encountered in his practice. In a series of erotically charged episodic-stories, we see a young girl seduce her step-father, a gymnast who enjoys some locker room antics with a coach and a trio of beautiful young girls "save" a lifeguard at the local pool.
Presented uncut in the Original German Language with new removable subtitles. This release is the FIRST TIME EVER that SCHOOLGIRL REPORT #1 has been presented with English Subtitle translations!

Utter Garbage.......2006-12-03
Zero Stars
This is the sorriest exploitation movie I've ever seen. Watching Captain Kirk snap wasn't even enough to sit through this poorly conceived nonsense for some cheap laughs. This is a PG rated violent flick and Amazon is only selling it for $4.00 LOL! That should tell you everything you need to know.
Name withheld.......2006-10-25
This movie is far more important than the summary may lead one to believe, it also centers on the reality of those who come from violent broken homes and childhoods tend to repeat the cycle, and on and on it goes, it was a very good movie for its time and a stunning social commentary on the results of child abuse to say the least... Watch this movie and learn from it, Shatner turns in a stellar performance and message for us all to wake up to and does it vividly including flashbacks and all. This is serious stuff.

Mystified by the actions of normally kind townspeople who are suddenly driven to extremes of irrationaland violentbehavior, Jennifer and Stuart attempt to get to the bottom of the increasingly life-threatening chaos before it destroys them! * Tilly: Supporting Actress, Agnes of God (1985); Cronyn: Supporting Actor, The Seventh Cross (1945)
Customer Reviews:
A 'homogenized' thriller..........2005-05-06
Given the title and DVD cover art (it shows stars Tim Matheson and Meg Tilly sort of looking up each others noses) for the film Impulse (1984), one might assume this to be a romantic thriller of sorts but it's really a sinister little piece of celluloid that asks the audience to imagine a place where people suddenly started acted on their impulses, doing whatever they wanted whenever they wanted...directed by Graham Baker (Omen III: The Final Conflict, Alien Nation), the film stars Tim `Otter' Matheson (Animal House, Fletch), who also did the voice for Jonny Quest in the 1964 television cartoon series among other things, along with Meg Tilly (Psycho II, The Big Chill). Also appearing is Hume Cronyn (Shadow of a Doubt, Lifeboat), John Karlen (Trilogy of Terror), Claude Earl Jones (Used Cars, Evilspeak, Bride of Re-Animator), Lorinne Vozoff (Chaos Theory), and Bill Paxton, prior to his breakout role in John Hughes 1985 film Weird Science as the smarmy antagonistic brother Chet Donnelly.
The story begins in what looks like a small, Californian town with shots of various animals acting peculiar, followed by a rather minor earthquake...you see, animals possess sensitivities much greater than that of humans, therefore imminent natural phenomenon can cause strange behavior in said animals...we then cut to establishing scenes in some major metropolitan city featuring both Matheson and Tilly, one showing Matheson's character, named Stuart, operating on a patient in a surgery room, the other showing Tilly's character, named Jenny, practicing ballet. Turns out the two are a couple, and after a disturbing phone call from Jenny's mother (Vozoff), one that ends with mom doing something completely unpredictable, the couple takes a trip to Jenny's small hometown, the same place that recently had the earthquake, where Stuart gets to meet the family, including Jenny's father Bob (Karlen), and her brother Eddie (Paxton), along with the local doctor named Carr, played by Cronyn. There's a bit of mystery behind the recent injury suffered by Jenny's mother, but this is soon overshadowed by strange behavior among some of the residents of the small town in that their actions seem to be those of impulse, with no regards for the consequences, including old men urinating in the streets, petty theft, actions based on uncontrolled rage, and public displays of lustful affection. Soon these relatively minor events become more and more common (and serious), and Stuart suspects a possible infection, but his efforts to discern the source of the madness are hampered by the ever increasing violent activity of the citizens, turning it into a veritable thunderdome, and also the very real possibility that he, himself, may be infected...
This was an interesting film, but overall it felt like something that wasn't quite cooked long enough, like a half finished episode of the X-Files, sans Mulder and Scully. The increasing severity of the impulsive behavior among the townspeople was an fun aspect, because you have all these seemingly normal people doing things completely unexpected, and there was always the question of how far it would end up going (it went further than I thought). As others have mention, something much like this story has been done previously with George Romero's 1973 film The Crazies, although as you might expect, that film features a lot more violence, while Impulse obviously exhibits a larger budget and better production values and was produced for a more mainstream audience. I did like the `loose' feel of the story, but I felt no real connection to any of the characters. While I think both Matheson and Tilly are good actors, there wasn't a whole lot of chemistry between their characters, something I'd attribute more to the script rather than the performers themselves. And why did there seem so little interest in what happened to Jenny's mother shortly after the film begins? I would have thought such a bizarre action from a relatively normal and well-balanced (I'm assuming these last bits) individual would have raised a number of red flags, not to mention the increased unrestrained activity among some of the townspeople (not everyone in the town suffered from the unknown affliction). While there is dialog in the film, its overall effect felt minimal to me, as it seemed the director's intent was to tell much of the story through visuals (the opening sequences will make little sense until you get further into the film). This did work to some degree, but it's like building a brick wall without using any mortar...you can do it, and it may stand, but it will tumble due to lack of solidity. For those interested, there is some nekkidness in the film, but none from Ms. Tilly...what we do get is a full moon shot from Mr. Matheson. I don't mind male nekkidness in a film, but at least offset it with some of the female kind. There's a reason why female nekkidness is more prevalent in films over male nekkidness and that's because women's bodies are generally much better looking than men's bodies...that and the fact most of the films are made by men, but I digress...I think my favorite scene from the film featured the local sheriff, played by Jones, as he's pursuing a vandalism suspect and ends up doing something which I'm sure many law enforcement officials would probably love to do at least once, perhaps not with regards to such a minor offence, but still...the ending was good, a little unexpected, but looking back on it, it seemed a very realistic, if not frightening, reaction to the situation.
The picture quality was very good, what of it I could see as the only version available on this DVD is the full screen, pan and scan format (1.33:1), the same one featured in the earlier Anchor Bay release. The Dolby Digital 2.0 mono audio comes through clean and clear. There are subtitles available in English, Spanish, and French, but as far as any real special features, there are none.

Oh, by the way, did anyone else think it strange that Stuart and Jenny should take a bus to travel to Jenny's hometown? Especially since Stuart is some kind of medical doctor?
WEIRD, QUIRKY, AND COMPELLING..........2001-06-25
In the quiet, little, rural town of Sutcliffe in Anywhere, USA, its citizens are suddenly freed from all constraints. They begin acting out their unspoken thoughts. They lose all self control. The town goes from being an idyllic, sleepy little pueblo to a hot bed of sex, murder, and raging testosterone. All its citizens seem to be acting on impulse.
Meg Tilly and Tim Matheson star as a young couple in love in this unsung film. Their world is turned upside down, when Meg's mother does something unspeakable. Suddenly, it is as if their entire world has gone awry. Look for Hume Cronyn who is wonderfully cast as the trusted, family doctor. See what he does when he gets sick and tired of his patient, Meg's mother. A very young Bill Paxton plays Meg Tilly's brother. Trust me, he has his own problems. See what happens to Tim Matheson, when he gives in to a sudden impulse. Will true love win out? Watch the film and find out for yourself. It is well worth viewing.
This movie is reminiscent of a very good Twilight Zone episode. At times I felt as if I were waiting for Rod Sterling to interject himself into the film with a narrative. It is a very interesting and quirky film. Some of the scenes are quite startling. Those who enjoy sci-fi, horror, and off beat films, will enjoy this one.
Excellent 80's style movie........1999-07-12
This was not a made for TV movie. I saw this at the theatre when it was released in 1984. What it is lacking in acting, it makes up for in substance. It presents a story of what could happen if we were to lose control of our Freudian "ID" or our impluse center. Everyone has experienced the rage response sometime in their lives. Having studied behavioral science for years this behavior has been duplicated in the laboratory. This is an excellent film for psychology students or anyone interested in human behavior. Since the government really does have a terrible problem with hazardous waste disposal, the implications of this film are very real.
A good Twilight Zone type horror film.......1999-04-03
I saw this on tv years ago. I believe it was made for tv. A pre-fame Bill Paxton has a small role as Tilly's older brother. It's a good entertaining movie. It's not gory. It's actually a rip-off of the George Romero film "The Crazies" from 1974. It's the exact same plot but Impulse is much, much better. I think there's also a Shatner version of Impulse from the 70's. Don't believe what L.Maltin says.

It's Shatner-vana for cheese fans!.......2006-09-23
This movie is peppered with Shatner being more Shatner than ever, and everyone I see it with has a great time of it! From the double-finger-point to the line about dog food to "Big -- tough -- broad -- aren'tcha," this movie is a gem for Shatner's top-quality hamminess.
The plot is totally stupid, but who cares? This movie is a blast to watch!
Only for fans of William "the ham" Shatner.......2006-08-21
William Shatner hams it up in this thriller where he portrays an ex-con conman who charms lonely women and then murders them for their money. Worth viewing for those who appreciate Shatner at his hammy best; all others beware! Filmed somewhere on the west coast of Florida (Tampa?), it looks like the production spent $85 and a weekend to make it. Also of note, Shatner's wife (at the time) portrays the hotel employee/bimbo.
