Bleak as its South Central Los Angeles setting, Harsh Times is like a suicidal vortex swallowing men who ought to know better but can't stop their self-destruction. Christian Bale stars as Jim Davis, a stressed-out, former Army Ranger who becomes a very bad influence on his weak-willed buddy, Mike Alvarez (Freddy Rodriguez of Six Feet Under). Together the two meander through streets at night, getting drunk and stoned, finding trouble for its own sake and inviting danger as a ritual of machismo bonding. Mike's wife, Sylvia (Eva Longoria), a lawyer whom Mike, working as a telemarketer, put through school, is repelled by Jim and watches in pain as her spouse chooses a downward spiral over renewal and redemption with her. When Jim's application to join the L.A. police is turned down, he leads Mike into pure anarchy. An impractical change of fortune doesn't help any, and first-time director David Ayer, who wrote the screenplay for Harsh Times years before his script for Training Day, goes to some lengths, dramatically and visually, to convey Jim's unhinged condition. The dreariness of it all, and a sense that Bale has constructed--but not exactly lived in--another in his gallery of lost, misfit souls, makes it hard to connect with this film. Still, it is hard to turn away from these desperate and dangerous characters. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ayer film hits hard but misses necessary emphasis.......2007-06-25

Following Christian Bales acting career is like watching an Olympic swimmer, pushing the boundaries, pushing the improbable to finally win the gold medal to then come back after fours years and do it all again, breaking world records performing like a new star. There seems there's nothing this actor will not attempt to do to push his talent and skill in terms of submerging himself into a character. Whether his performance as the yuppie killer in American Psycho or the emaciated empty headed somnambulist in The Machinist or even the serious caped crusader in the excellent Batman Begins all characters hit the mark, all believable, all extremely well done.

In this realistic drama, he portrays a post traumatic psychotic returned from a tour of duty from somewhere in the Middle East. Bale as Jim Davis does a believable performance, however, does not gain the sympathy (so required in a role like this) from the audience. Something is missing but what exactly is missing?

Freddy Rodriguez, Six Feet Under as Mike Alonzo does a fair job as the irresponsible old buddy badly influenced by Jim Davis's pleas to party and make trouble when Freddy should be looking for a job. Their repartee in Davis's car is realistic and sadly true of two old friends holding on to their respective past, and refusing to grow up. Despite the fact that the two characters are in their late twenties, the dialogue is distinctly adolescent as their drunken and pot fuelled antics while driving the streets of South Central L.A. all too often reveal.

The beautiful Eva Longeria Desperate Housewives plays Alonzo's lawyer wife, gently pushing the boy like a concerned and nagging mother to get a job. Similar to a confused teenager, to cover the fact that he's drinking with Davis, has his friends telephone his home and leave messages as potential employers. He gets caught to then act like a guilty fourteen year old as his beautiful wife kicks him out of the house - loser realism at its most pathetic.

The film begins to change as the two boy's finally land jobs. Although for the psychotic recent war Vet, Jim Davis, his behaviour turns bad, his psychotic breaks more out of control, and the entire fate of these characters and the film now heads on a downward rollercoaster to hell.

Apart from the fact that these druggy antics and violent behaviours from Jim Davis went on far too long throughout the film, Bale never shows us something in the character we can sympathize with...the character is insane to begin with and he just goes more insane as the film progresses. Because the boy is a Vet and most likely a war hero in the traditional sense, like Vietnam, society will not let him back into `normality' because trained killers, soldiers who return from action, are more often damaged goods.

This is the message of the film: Western governments send our boys to war and expect them to do their duty and kill the enemy. But the support they so direly need when returning from the hell of war, attempting to fit back in to society is forgotten. That is why some soldiers continue going back for extra tours, because that's all they know and can do.

Harsh Times is a realistic film, well acted but missed one aspect so necessary in a story of this kind, creating sympathy for the main character. We get the point but as the character is too far gone, we'd rather not look at it or... care.

3 out of 5 stars Harsh Times.......2007-06-19

My Oppinion: Harsh Times is a very good drama, but has a lousy story and is kinda boring. Christian Bale does an outstanding performance and so does Freddy Rodriguze.

When The LAPD rejects him he goes into a vilont act and petty crimeand he drags his weak-milled friend mike with him. When Jim and mike end up with 20 kg of marjuwana jim gets a tragic end.

2 out of 5 stars Harsh times was too harsh too watch!!!.......2007-06-05

First off, I am only giving this movie two stars for the way Christian Bale looked in his "wife-beater"/undershirt. Other than that, the rest of this movie was abysmal. Bale was terribly miscast in this role. The thug routine does not fit him. His talents were wasted. Freddy Rodriguez' performance was forgettable and the dialog between the two was horribly written and executed. We will not even get on the horrible accent since other reviewers already mentioned that. Eva Longoria had minimal screen time and I was wondering what the purpose of her character was. In addition, I looked at the end credits and I noticed that Bale was one of the executive producers for this. He should have rethought about putting his name on this mess. Overall, this movie was a hot"100 degree" mess. Please avoid this like a beat down.

1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Bad.......2007-06-02

Oddly enough, considering the cast and the high quality of acting I was very disappointed in this movie. The story is both boring and exceedingly predicable. Could any two human beings be so monumentally screwed up and succeed in life at any level? The lead character is not only a lowly mess but a complete looser. Not only did I find it hard to relate to the character, it got to the point I didn't even care. I turned the movie off within just minutes from the end not being able to stomach it anymore.
Its just a study in the worst of humanity slithering around in alcohol abuse, drug abuse and misery. This movie proves if you give good actors a poor story a shallow script and pathetic dialog you can't expect them to pull off a decent movie.

Despite rave reviews as one of the most stylish and intelligent detective pictures in a number of years, this 1995 adaptation of Walter Mosley's novel never found a mass audience. Too bad, because Carl Franklin's film is nearly perfect in every way, from its rich, shadowy look to its depiction of life in post-World War II black America (L.A.-style) to the acting of Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, and others. Washington plays Easy Rawlins, an aircraft factory worker who is laid off only to find his true calling: as a private eye, albeit an unlicensed one. Hired to find a missing woman, he becomes entangled in a complex but satisfying case involving sex, corruption, racism, and of course money. Top-notch from top to bottom--and Cheadle is dangerously funny as Easy's best friend, a killer named Mouse. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Who played Coretta?.......2007-07-01

I've read all the reviews and still have to see one that mentions Coretta...who played her in the movie? I thought she was stunning.

5 out of 5 stars Denzel and Scene Stealing Cheadle Make This A Winning Adaptation.......2007-04-04

Devil in a Blue Dress is a wonderful adaptation of Walter Mosely's fantastic late 40's detective series featuring black private eye "Easy" Rawlins.

Rawlins is a World War II veteran trying to get reestablished in LA following the war. He finds himself helping out someone hired to look for a white woman who is married to a prominent politician. Soon, he is caught up in the double dealings, mystery, and intrigue that only a 40's private eye can be involved in, and "Easy" begins to have it very, very hard.

He enlists the help of his Texas cousin "Mouse," played by Don Cheadle in what is one of the best scene-stealing performances in the past twenty years. "Mouse" hasn't met anyone besides "Easy" that he dosen't want to kill, and he works hard at being an efficent killer. The byplay with Washington's Easy is hysterical, and provides excellent comic relief.

This move is enjoyable on just about nearly every level. If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to watch Devil in A Blue Dress very, very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Devil in a Blue Dress - Great African American Film Noir.......2007-01-09

This film directed by Carl Franklin from his own screenplay, based on the novel by Walter Mosley is great. It is a wonderful example of film noir comng from the late 1940's section of Los Angeles that is not seen in films, and from an African American perspective. I highly recommend owning this DVD with commentary from Franklin.

3 out of 5 stars Very good performances hung on not much substance........2006-10-17

Devil in a Blue Dress (Carl Franklin, 1995)

I'm still attempting to figure out what to say about this movie after two weeks. Usually, this is a sign that it simply didn't leave enough of an impression on me to say much of anything, but at least I liked it.

Easy Rawlins (Denzel Washington), an out-of-work electrician, is hired by an acquaintance of a friend to go looking for Daphne Monet (Flashdance's Jennifer Beals), the missing fiancee of a political candidate in an upcoming election. There's more to it than that, of course, but this is a movie where things tend to get complicated and spoiler-laden very quickly.

The movie is chock full of good performances, notably Washington and Don Cheadle as his friend and partner Mouse. The problem is that these performances exist in a vacuum; the movie never really comes together, with wooden dialogue and a paint-by-numbers plot that sacrifices a good deal of the subtlety of the novel. It's a decent genre mystery flick, but it's not what it could have been. ** ½

5 out of 5 stars this movie rocks, man!.......2006-09-27

very good script adapted from a great writer's novel. great casting and amazing performances by all the actors. the directing, editing and the shooting are also too good to not mention it here. this is a perfect noir genre movie, very dark and moody but also got pretty funny sometimes. i enjoy it very much.

Envy is a funny movie, but it's more funny peculiar than funny ha-ha, so enjoyment is purely a matter of personal taste. When Nick (Jack Black) invents an aerosol spray that makes dog-poop disappear (think of the boon to society!), he reaps a fortune overnight and sends his friend, co-worker and neighbor Tim (Ben Stiller) into a tailspin of simmering envy, since he had no faith in Nick's get-rich-quick scheme and declined his offer of 50-50 partnership. What makes this potentially raucous plot peculiar is that it sets up the situation and proceeds to ignore its most comedic implications, opting instead for a sub-plot involving bows, arrows, a dead horse, and an eccentric vagrant (Christopher Walken, offering reliable comic relief) who coaches Tim on the joys of neighborly blackmail. All the while, Envy suffers a comedic identity crisis, giving Black and Stiller a few good laughs (along with their on-screen wives, played by Rachel Weisz and Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler) while director Barry Levinson struggles to reach a quirky balance of morality play and blue-collar farce. He never quite gets there. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars I loved the movie, but I guess i'm strange.......2007-02-06

I rented this movie one day without having known a single thing about the movie. I read no reviews and all I knew about the movie is who directed it. I like the director's films and the two people in it.

I personally enjoyed the movie and found it quite funny. Even laugh out loud funny. Yes, you read that right. I'm not an idiot and like all kinds of movies and am pretty picky. I have to admit I might have a weird sense of humour.

Anyway, this isn't much of a review. I saw the movie and liked it so much that I immediately rewatched it! That night I checked rotten tomatoes (Review site) and was shocked to find that the movie was totally rotten! I felt a little embarrassed that I liked the movie that much, but who cares!

All my friends hate the movie and think it's garbage. Probably 1/10 people would actually like the movie. Possibly. I just know that I loaned the movie to my mother and she loved it as well! No, we are not a family of idiots as you may be thinking! We also don't smoke drugs.

This is one of those movies I love that everyone else in the world seems to hate. I'm sure you'd had that happen before.

3 out of 5 stars Could it have been worse?.......2007-01-14

One of the most awful films in years, or a cautionary tale ahead of its time? Consider the talent involved. They must have had a reason to invest so much in a story about a man who discovers a way to make dog do instantly disappear. Barry Levinson directed "The Natural" and "Rain Man" for goodness sake, why on earth would he do this? The film is tedious, loses steam after Ben Stiller shoots Jack Black's horse. They try to liven things with Christopher Walken as an old army guy who convinces Stiller he's everyman hero, like Che Guevara. Then when that doesn't work, Black conveniently decides to make him partner (why didn't he do this sooner?) This sets up Rachel Weisz for a dopey transformation to greedy, sex-crazy wife. Amy Poehler is funny as Black's wife who runs for congress. Her campaign is threatened by an opponent wondering where the do goes after it's vaporized. If this all sounds kind of lame it is. But the syrup on pants gag is funny at the beginning. There is clever satire in here somewhere. I know it. Look at all the talent involved. They had to have done it for more than a paycheck. We must be missing something. Soylent Green is people? Did you just call it "her?"

5 out of 5 stars You'lI ENVY the genius of these filmmakers!.......2006-07-07

In my opinion, ENVY is everything you could want in a good-time madcap movie that had no budget for a screenwriter. How the heck do you waste the unrestrained hilarity that is Jack Black? You have to TRY to make this cat UNFUNNY. Well, kids, let's call this one "Mission Accomplished" and fly back to "Bad Movieland" where everything is rainbows and sun showers and you keep greenlighting movies because somebody is a friend of the studio head despite the fact the there isn't a single redeeming quality to this pitch and/or screenplay. Keep the hacks to computer programming, not screenwriting.

1 out of 5 stars Possibly The Worst Movie I've Ever Seen...Like Flushing $12.00 Down The Drain.......2006-06-02

I'll be honest: From the trailer, commercials, and the very fact that it contained both Ben Stiller and Jack Black, I was expecting at least something stupid enough that it was funny. Despite the horrible reviews when it was released, I still somewhat eagerly went to see "Envy". Halfway through the movie I almost left, but forced myself to stay, hoping that it would get at least a little better. To say the least: It didn't. I left the theater depressed and regretfull over the 7 bucks I paid for the ticket, and the hour and a half lost seeing it. This movie is easily one of the worst comedies I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of comedies. Bed Stiller's performance couldn't be more disappointing, and Jack Black stupid antics weren't funny in the least. Honestly, I think there was MAYBE one time in the entire length of the film that I chuckled, and that was forced. Nothing in this movie was funny, just dull and boring, plus the plot is bull, and doesn't end up anywhere else from where it started.
If you're looking for something stupid but funny as hell, this is NOT it. "Envy" is a total waste of time, with the only humorous thing being the time and money the producers put into this load of s**t. Don't believe anyone who promotes this movie, though I haven't met anyone who has (Heck, most of my friends who saw this movie didn't even finish it) Trust me, if you buy this movie, or even rent it, you will pay dearly. Keep the money: You could buy a pizza (A much better investment).

1 out of 5 stars Hugely Disappointing.......2006-07-06

Expecting sexy camp in the tradition of "Beyond Valley of the Dolls" I was really looking forward to seeing this film. Instead I struggled through this tedious, repetitive, and confusing mess of a film. I respect what the director was trying to create, but the end product is nearly unwatchable. It's starts out so well too.... "I tried not to remember why I buried my trumpet." ...but then it quickly dives into a psychosexual pseudo-sado-vampire ghost story that isn't the least bit sexy or interesting. I know this film has a sizeable cult following. It is pretty to look at (sometimes when it isn't in grainy slow-motion) but I just couldn't make it through. Maybe it's worth a look, but I personally wish I had rented it.

4 out of 5 stars "A young beautiful stranger washed on to our friendly shores with only death as a companion".......2006-04-04

Found this while I was browsing the cult cinema section. Never heard of it before. Never seen a Jess Franco film that I can recall. Figured any movie that shares a name with a song from the first Velvet Underground album was worth a look. Am I glad I didn't buy "Freaks" instead? As Larry Flynt might say, "You bet your sweet ass!" What a psychadelic trip, and another notch in my quest to watch every weird movie made between 1959 and 1979. What's the story, morning glory? A jazz trumpter finds a dead girl washed up on the beaches of Istanbul. He seems to remember some strange goings on involving her at a party he played at. Freaked out by the experience, he runs off to Rio de Janeiro, and falls in with a foxy singer named Rita. One night while he plays an engagement, the dead girl walks through the door. And of course he follows, as do we. Nothing seems to make any sense. Another figure from the Istanbul scene arrive in Rio, a redhead named Olga who favors wearing a fur coat topless. What does all of this have to do with a mysterious fakir who lives in the palace of a fallen sultan and an art dealer? Our trumpeteer, Jimmy, eventually returns to Istanbul, but the answers he finds aren't exactly the ones he expects. The score is haunting, the imagery and colors a feast for the eyes. An added interview with director Franco, who reveals the inspirations behind the script, is just the delicate frosting on a multi-layered cake. The crystal ball says more Franco films in my future. This one should be in yours.

4 out of 5 stars franco in furs .......2006-03-15

Venus in Furs, by Jess Franco, is a wonderful time capsule to a jet-set, jazz world of night clubs, parties, hedonism, and morbidity. Shot in a lurid, psychedelic style, Venus in Furs has indy/underground stamped on it with a vengeance. Maverick filmmaker Franco goes to Ken Russell-like excess with an almost documentary approach to a story that will make M. Night Shamalyn fans re-think their opinions about their hero's originality. Made in the days when Franco was at his hottest, this must have torn heads wide open in it's day. As a side note; the sound track( featuring Franco on horn, at times )may never leave your mind. This film is for admirers of The Frightened Woman, Succubus, Blow Up, and Baba Yaga.

2 out of 5 stars Visually interesting, OK, true........2005-12-15

As far as acting, story line, directing, casting, and sexiness, it's a dud. Another ultra-hyped mediocrity. Enjoyable to a degree for just how incomprehensible it is.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic cinema at its best.......2005-06-13

Legendary cult director Jess Franco has made a staggering amount of films in his career, and regardless of how non-existent the budget or incoherent the narrative is, nearly all of his pre-1980 work is at the very least interesting, and in many cases, fascinating. Jess Franco always provides us with sensuous eye candy and a great soundtrack, but in the case of "Venus in Furs", he goes far beyond that and creates a film that is more than just a great exploitation film - it's a great film period.

Along with his two other masterworks, "Vampyros Lesbos", and "She Killed in Ecstacy", this is one of the few Franco films that has not only a strong story idea to start with, but a solid and well paced narrative to carry it along. The film benefits enormously by a great cast, anchored by leading man James Darren, who turns in a low-keyed, solid performance that is reminiscent of something you might see in a Hitchcock or early Brian Depalma film. Maria Rohm is as sensuous and captivating as ever, and both the lucious Barbara Lee and the sultry Barbara McNair round out what might be one of the best trio of "Franco women" ever cast together in one of his films. Also on hand is Franco/Euro-horror regular Klaus Kinski. He is solid as usual.

It goes without saying that the movie looks great (given the age of the film, the transfer is superb), and is loaded with erotic imagery, but Franco outdoes himself here. The score by Manford Mann and Mike Hugg is outstanding and goes a long way toward creating the film's hypnotic atmosphere. This is a movie that Franco buffs and fans of Euro exploitation will simply love. Even non-Franco film buffs who enjoyed the likes of "Jacobs Ladder", and Mary Lambert's "Siesta", also might want to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars HERSHEY DOMINATES.......2007-02-16

Based on a true story and a book called EVIDENCE OF LOVE, this tv movie is made remarkable by the Emmy-winning performance of Barbara Hershey. She is utterly magnificent in the role of a middle class housewife who brutally murders her ex-lover's wife in a self defensive rage. Hershey superbly captures the many nuances of this seemingly normal woman who commits a heinous deed. Her hypnosis sequence is brutally painful and she pulls out no stops in showing us the hidden rage.
Brian Dennehy is equally good as the lawyer who tries to get her out of her terrifying predicament.
The movie is impressively done and once again worthy most of all for Ms. Hershey's dynamic presence.

Slicker than a Harlem shakedown, Across 110th Street "hits hard" (Cue) with a jacked-up, smacked-down thrill-ride through the hell-raisin' hoods of Harlem! Cooler-than-cool Anthony Quinn leads a hot cast, including Anthony Franciosa and Yaphet Kotto, in a "hair-raising" (Motion Picture Herald) cop thriller that packs a double barrel of "gory vengeance raw, ugly and unnervingly real" (Playboy)! When a crew of gun-totin' gangstas knocks over a Mafia racket in Harlem, their plan gets blown to hell and the crib gets blown to bits! But as the bullets start flyin' and cops start dyin', a pair of New York's finest (Quinn and Kotto) are forced to work together to bring justice to the streets before the Mafia brings the ghetto to its knees! Now, wanted by the Man and hunted by the Mob, there ain't no way these homicidal homeboys are getting across 110th Street exceptin a body bag!

4 out of 5 stars Old school at its best.......2007-05-03

If you like old school blacksploitation films then you will love this. It is chock full of well know actors and the theme is outta sight!

4 out of 5 stars Across 110th Street.......2007-02-15

When a dry-cleaner, a building superintendent, and a party animal decide to make a better life for themselves--split threeways--and dress up like cops to rip off $300 000 from the Mob, they don't exactly commit the perfect crime. The Mob sends its most sadistic enforcer, and some other violence-prone creeps, into Harlem to teach everyone across 110th Street that said street is a dividing line, not to be crossed. Meanwhile, Yaphet Kotto and Anthony Quinn play two detectives who have nothing but contempt for each other--but their job is to try and collar the three perps before the mobsters manage to hunt them down and eliminate them ("it's not about the money...it's about honor and respect").

Quinn's character, Mattelli, is a blatant racist and unapologetic bully, resorting to beatings and terror whenever he wants info. Kotto, as Pope, is more the stoic, silent--if slightly twitchy- type, who copes with his new partner as best he can, while occasionally losing his cool with the raging bull he's saddled with. The two barely communicate with each other as they follow the few leads they come up with that may point them to any of the fugitive trio, who have scattered in fear, but not enough to cover their tracks; the tension-filled silence between the two leads is as effective as most of the incendiary dialogue when they lash out at each other. I wish we could have learned more about Pope's background or personal life, so that Yaphet Kotto would have a bit more to do in the role (Quinn, the loudmouth, moans about his past and his personal problems enough so that, as vile as he is, we get to know more of what he's all about).

Then there's the action and violence, resulting mainly from the mobsters on a mission getting to their targets--or any unwilling informants that may know the names or whereabouts of the targets--before the cops. Anyone who gets shot instantly loses a quart of blood (though this is 1970's blood, which was apparently a different colour than today's blood). BLAM!--and it's like a hose is turned on. All shakedowns and roughings-up are painfully severe, and I'm just talking about Mattelli's handiwork. Fortunately, the violence sprays all over a wonderfully involving and serpentine plot that shifts smoothly from character to character; Quinn and Kotto almost step aside to let the bad guys take this movie hostage, and it works well. Not that they're contribution isn't riveting or relevant--the two detectives have the very best scene, as they both invade the office of a smirky gangster named Doc, who puts them in their place--but this film really belongs to Logart and Harris, two of the moneygrabbers turned murderers, as they hide, and then run, for their lives. For them, it's not the honor; it's definitely the money. Rich or dead, all the way. The fear only comes when--in the end--they each turn their final corner.

I thought the very last moment of the film was a bit senseless, although, thinking it over, I guess it counts as revenge. Besides that, it's all wickedly spot-on: the dialogue, the acting, the music, the pace, the plot, the costumes, the action...every scene is a treat.

Watch this with L.A. Confidential, or maybe Snatch.

3 out of 5 stars Brutish, noisy, incoherent police melodrama..........2006-12-17

"Across 110th Street" is about a hijack of Mafia cash, in which Anthony Quinn became involved in an unsympathetic role as an old-line cop, on the take for years and ready to retire...

Quinn gives a controlled, nicely shaded performance of a character who has long ago sensed that all his efforts are not going to do more than lift the smallest corner of the lid of crime... He does his job and he does it well according to his lights, but he is not above taking a bribe from a racketeer... His method of dealing with a reluctant witness is to hit hard first and ask questions later...

His captain Frank Mattelli actually is part of the film's somewhat irrelevant subplot, dealing with the rivalry between two cops (opposite Yaphet Kotto as the younger, "clean," black lieutenant bucking for Quinn's job), while the police, the Mafia and the black syndicate each tries to track down the gang of hoods which knocked over Harlem numbers bank...

The strictly legal approach to police work, as exemplified by Yaphet Kotto - who also plays racketeer "Mr. Big" in "Live And Let Die" - is not for Quinn... This is his territory, his little kingdom, and he keeps the peace as best he knows...

"Across 110th Street" remains brutish, noisy, incoherent police melodrama, with fashionable sadism and predictable performances...

3 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2006-08-03

The best thing about Across 110th Street is the music with Bobby Womack and J.J. Johnson teaming up on the excellent soundtrack. The movie has a decent feel to it as far as cop dramas went during that time, but there were much better movies such as Gordon Parks' Shaft and Norman Jewison's In the Heat of the Night. Still, it is fun to watch if for nothing more than Yaphet Kotto, who would later play the precinct captain in Homicide, a long way from the blaxploitation films of the 70's.

2 out of 5 stars Across 110th Street.......2005-08-22

Well this movie is nothing special, I laugh at anyone who says it's the greatest crime drama ever, it's not, it's not
even at the same level as "Heat", it's typical offensive Blaxploitation.

That about sums up the movie, except not as well known
and not as effective as "Heat", Anthony Quinn and Yaphette are
mirror images of Sidney Poitier's character and Rod Steiger. Pretty standard blaxplotation.

Quinn basically plays a racist police named Capt. Mattelli
whose about as racist as they come beating up any black person in his path, unfortunately no one in this film gives him an equal amount of beatings.

Kotto as Lt. Pope who is working the case with him involving stolent loot of the mafia from a couple of black criminals.

Man all the characters in the movie are truly revolting black and white. Mattelli isn't the only racist cop, and in fact he's a hypocrite racist who is taking money from a black mafia
kingpin!!!!! Truly hilarious.

There are other racist and corrupt white cops
, and for a twist we have some black pimps and
dealers who sell out their black partners
in crime.

Really there isn't too much to say about the movie,
it's a Blaxploitation, we all know how this
bad films ends.

I do get a kick of Lt. Pope slamming the Captain down calling him a racist sob (which he is) and the Captain having the gall to change the subject: "You want my job, don't you!!!"

Not really he just wants you to stop being a white
beatnik racist.

Anyhow only for true movie collectors of this type

Australian writer-director Rolf De Heer's 1993 semi-comic satire, Bad Boy Bubby, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for its sometimes savage vision of a modern society in which a Kaspar Hauser-like figure suddenly appears. Nicholas Hope is masterful as 35-year-old Bubby, who has been shut within his corpulent mother's airless apartment all his life, enduring sexual exploitation and mom's lies about the outside world being poisonous. When Bubby's estranged father turns up, the boy-man seizes an opportunity to flee, and embarks on a dark journey to encounter the unknown. De Heer keeps his innocent hero moving from situation to situation, like a great blank slate (think of Peter Sellers in Being There) absorbing and repeating whatever he sees and hears. Meanwhile, the people who meet him perceive exactly what they want to perceive. De Heer may be on a Swiftian mission to underscore humanity's corruption, but Hope is brilliant at the more subtle job of constructing, using few tools, Bubby's increasingly complex inner life. --Tom Keogh

Description

Winner of Four Australian Academy Awards, Including Best Actor - Nicholas Hope, Best Director - Rolf De Heer, and Best Original Screenplay.

L.A. Weekly called it "disturbing and compelling", and it was awarded The Grand Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Despite a limited release in America, it would shock and delight audiences to become one of the most daring and controversial cult films of the past decade. Nicholas Hope in what Variety hails as "an astonishing performance" - stars as Bubby, a demented man-child kept locked his entire life in a squalid apartment by his depraved mother. But when Bubby - who can only communicate by mimicking what others say and do - escapes into the outside, he soon discovers the wonders of sex, crime, rock & roll and pizza. Will this 'mad bastard' be destroyed by the realities of our cruel world, or does a higher calling ultimately await him in the most unlikely place of all?

5 out of 5 stars a fun loving romp!!.......2007-01-11

Bad Boy Bubby is one of the finest feel good movies ive ever seen. Bubby's joyous comedic romp through life makes us all sit back and say "hey, lets live a little!!" boy, i laughed so much my sides nearly split. a real hoot!

5 out of 5 stars Not Quite Like Anything You've Ever Seen.......2007-01-10

I saw this DVD years ago during a trip to England, long before it made its way to this side of the pond. This is not like anything you've ever seen and is deeply worthy of the cult status it has around the world. Your jaw will drop in the first minutes of the film and not make its way back closed until long after it's over. And it will be a ride straight through. It's incredible and audacious (as are all of Aussie Rolf de Heer's works). Its sharply funny, deeply disturbing and a great piece of filmmaking. Watch it, but not on a first date!

5 out of 5 stars A movie for deep minds.......2007-01-04

Bad Boy Bubby is without a doubt my all time favourite. Turn the phone off, close your gate, watch it without company only, and turn the volume up so you can hear every word.
I've watched it about 25 times, and it just gets better.

4 out of 5 stars Autism,Off Spring Abuse,Jail Cell Rape,Mimic Behaviour,Decadence,Blasphemy& Compassions.......2006-12-22

12/22/06 The jacket of the DVD gives no indication that an amoral, sick, 35 year old man will commit 4 murders and kill 2 cats...The opening scenes not only show him as a 30 year hostage & abused of his mother (since the age of 5 ,when his alcoholic father abandons her & "Bubby") but him tearing insects apart and poking a cat he has encaged with a stick...his behaviour is totally based (except for the murders : he has no TV nor books that have influenced his "wipe 'em out via suffocation mentality)on mimicked behaviour.."his epiphany" is via evolution of many 'good, bad or ugly' people(including his own various temperments:in one case of his violating a convenience store clerk with harsh punches to the gut, and in another while bag pipes sounded ,him getting raped in a jail cell), many other situations ,scenarios plus an ending of 'anti-climax' that "justice" sent this 'bad boy' to bring down the final curtain , via unbelievably a "married with children" scene.

4 out of 5 stars This Is not your average Hollywood blockbuster.......2006-10-09

This movie is certainly an eye-opener. It may shock and disturb in some places but will leave you on an emotional high. You can feel yourself being consumed by the movie and almost living in the character and growing with him. Be warned this movie will stay in your head for a long time. But on a positive note there is a happy ending and is quite comical in some places, both purposely and accidently. The special features are excellent and anyone interested in movie making like myself, will definitely enjoy the very insightful directors commentary.

It's been branded with the "blaxploitation" label, but there is little that's exploitive in J.D.'s Revenge, a film of well-drawn, articulate characters dragged into a supernatural showdown. Glynn Turman (Cooley High) is especially fine as the sensitive and quiet Ike, a determined student moonlighting as a cab driver, so wound up he's on the verge of cracking. Enter (literally) the ghost of J.D., a violent, vengeful gangster murdered in the opening moments. He could be Ike's own Mr. Hyde, a dapper, flamboyant ladykiller with a fiery temper and a straight razor who slowly smothers Ike's easygoing personality. Driven by flashes of memory, he sets his vengeful sights on fire-and-brimstone preacher Reverend Bliss (Louis Gossett Jr.), whose dark past is intricately tied up with J.D.'s murder. Director Arthur Marks (Detroit 9000) sidesteps the usual spooky clichés to stir up a modern New Orleans gumbo of ghost story, gangster tale, and character drama. J.D. is both devilish sadist and avenging angel, while the tortured Ike awakens from J.D.'s violent rampages with a hole in his memory but a sick feeling from his imagined complicity in the crimes. The story gets wrapped up a little too neatly in the end, but the dark character shadings and the evocative mystery at the center of Ike's possession makes J.D.'s Revenge an unexpectedly compelling supernatural thriller. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Outta the grave and into the ghetto comes the tortured spirit of a 1940's tough-as-nails gangster who pries his way into the body of a hip and likable young soul brother (Glynn Turman, How Stella Got Her Groove Back). With terrifying twists and turns, this spine-tingling, "sharp, hip and offbeat" (Boxoffice) adventure delivers pure urban action excitement! Ike (Turman) is having a night on the town when he volunteers to be part of a hypnotist's nightclub act. But when thedemonic spirit of a long-dead gangster muscles its way into Ike's mindall hell breaks loose! Calling himself J.D., Ike thinks he is the reincarnation of the murdered gangster as he launches a rampage of revenge to destroy those who did him in years ago. It seems no one can stop this killing machine until one of his soon-to-be-victims, a reformed hood turned preacher (Academy AwardÂ(r) winner* Lou Gossett), comes to the ghastly conclusion that if he hopes to survive, he must save Ike's soul himself! *1982: Supporting Actor, An Officer and a Gentleman

3 out of 5 stars White Shadow Connection..........2006-06-01

The best thing about this movie is seeing Joan Pringle topless. She was the principal on the "White Shadow" broadcast on CBS. Most impressive.

4 out of 5 stars Endless Repetition..........2003-11-29

I first saw this in the late 70's while on a USN ship in the Med. It was a good distraction - and absolutely hilarious! In those days, the crews would exchange movies while underway via a large canvas bag. We'd send our "viewed" movies to another ship in exchange for the movies they'd seen.
EVERY EXCHANGE we'd end up with a copy of J.D.'s Revenge and Revenge of the B Girls. J.D.'s Revenge was so funny that the crew and wardroom watched it nearly every night for nearly 6 months. In a few months, nearly everyone had memorized the entire movie. It was like J.D. was taking over the crew...
Yup. Life was much harsher in the "Old Navy". How could anyone NOT want such an enjoyable (and quotable) movie?

4 out of 5 stars J.D.'s Revenge (1976).......2003-07-19

I had to get this title. The movie is ok and is worth buying. I enjoyed this movie. It's a movie that I grow-up with as a kid. I refers DVD's to the VHS Tape edition.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2002-08-12

This movie came out when I was about nine years old. Just out of the blue, the title popped into my head and I decided to purchase it....

The movie literaly had me on the edge of my seat once JD's spirit took over Ike's body. I disliked how this possession affected those close to Ike. He couldn't remember hurting his girlfriend or one of his customers. JD was CRAZY!!! It really did not take me long to figure out who killed JD and his sister, but I don't want to give it away. If your into "blaxplotation" movies, check this one out...
