Description
Extraordinary performances by Oscar-nominated Nigel Hawthorne, Louis Gossett Jr. and Eric Stoltz make this stunning film hard to forget. When Marty Strydom (Eric Stoltz), an idealistic university university professor is arrested for conspiring to overthrow the racist government in South Africa, he comes under the control of Police Colonel Kruger (Nigel Hawthorne). Kruger ruthlessly interrogates Marty during brutal solitary confinement. Kruger is determined to destroy Marty and all those like him. And he will stop at nothing. Ten years later, another political prisoner (Louis Gossett Jr.) who witnessed the whole event has become an investigator of crimes of physical and mental abuse by the previous regime. This time, when he confronts Kruger, will justice finally prevail?

"We're done," says Stewart Copeland near the end of Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, his homemade documentary about the rise and eventual fall of the group that ruled the planet during their '70s-'80s heyday. "When you get to where you're going, the ride is over." Yeah, but what a ride it was. Some 20 years after the Police (Copeland, Sting, and Andy Summers) disbanded for good, the drummer, now a film composer, edited the 50-plus hours of Super 8 footage he shot way back when, compiled a new soundtrack, wrote some voice-over commentary, and put together a film that, while considerably less than perfect, provides genuine insight into the chaotic, ultimately deadening world of rock superstardom. It all starts in '76, when the original band formed in England; by 1978, Copeland narrates, "we were ready to shed the leprous scab of (our) wretched history
and sally forth to the promised land of America." Fame and fortune ensued, and along the way, Copeland filmed everything--not just the inevitable scenes inside their tour van and backstage, but pre-gig sound checks, recording sessions, in-store promo appearances
Hell, he even recorded the band while they were making their videos, and there's one remarkable sequence in which he sets up his camera on a tripod behind his drum kit, then turns to address the viewer in mid-performance ("There's a little fight going on in front of the stage," he tells us). The camera work is often pretty shaky, and the performance footage is primitive, not to mention loud and distorted, but somehow that fits Copeland's fly-on-the-wall approach; and the soundtrack, live and studio versions of familiar tunes that Copeland "lobotomized" and "de-arranged," is revelatory. Perhaps best of all, the film offers Copeland a chance to tell us how it all went wrong. By the time of Ghost in the Machine, Sting (who comes off as his usual standoffish, mostly-humorless self) was no longer collaborating with other musicians in the studio. What's more, "(the) adulation started to feel like obligation," and while being rich and famous was swell, the price they paid was "our vibe, our essence." Part documentary, part travelogue, part video diary/confessional, Everyone Stares helps capture that essence again. --Sam Graham
About the DVD
Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, the directorial debut of five-time Grammy Award-winning composer and drummer Stewart Copeland, is a first-person account of The Police's ascent from obscurity to worldwide fame as well as an astute and sometimes hilarious commentary on the pop culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Culled from over 50 hours of Super 8 movies he shot during the acclaimed trio's heyday, the film offers an insider's perspective on touring, the other band members and the adoring fans that puts the audience in the drummer's seat. Copeland's kinetic and artful camerawork forms a visual ode to the rhythm of the road: a surreal swirl of hotel rooms, bus rides, press conferences and record signings punctuated by nightly flashes of electrifying on-stage exhilaration.
Formed in 1977 and marked by Sting's keening vocal style and driving bass, Copeland's intricately syncopated Caribbean-influenced drumming and Andy Summers' lush guitar harmonies and The Police delivered a bracing, sophisticated alternative to the head-banging punk rock of the day. Shortly after the release of their first album, Outlandos d'Amour, the band's fresh sound caught fire with audiences in the U.S. and Europe. In a few short years, these 20-something rock virtuosos went from touring grungy clubs in a beat-up car to flying between arena gigs in a private plane. But despite the sudden, intoxicating and sometimes terrifying rush of fame, The Police remained a remarkably close-knit unit throughout the early 1980s, sustained by a rare musical compatibility, a shared sense of humor and the knowledge they had succeeded beyond their wildest dreams largely on their own terms.
Copeland's breezy narration and onscreen annotations provide a wry, sometimes self-mocking perspective on the group's high jinks, from a lip-syncing session on skis for an early music video to their later travels throughout the Third World. Edited with a percussionist's precision timing and a composer's ear for the inherent pulse of each scene, Copeland scores the film using a pastiche of de-constructed studio and live versions of The Police's extensive and memorable repertoire.
"As soon as I raised the camera to my eye and started filming, amazing things began to happen," Copeland recalls. "A thrill ride began that took our group to the tippy-top of the music ziggurat. It was such an unreal experience that it seemed to make the most sense when I watched it through the lens of my camera. It was literally like watching a movie as the band sparked a fire that lit up the world for us. Everyone Stares is that movie."
Copeland is an award-winning film and television composer who has written scores for Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film Rumblefish, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination, Oliver Stone's Wall Street and Talk Radio, John Hughes' She's Having a Baby, John Waters' Pecker and Bruno Barretto's Academy Award-nominated Four Days in September. His television credits include scores for Desperate Housewives, Dead Like Me, for which he received an Emmy nomination, and The Amanda Show.
He was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Birds of Prey" from his 2005 CD Orchestralli. Copeland won five Grammys for his work with The Police.
Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out is directed, produced, written and edited by Stewart Copeland. He is also the film's cinematographer, music editor and narrator.

Take a seat; they're always free.......2007-06-27
Great Googly Moogly! This flick is an instant classic; a piece of Rock 'n Roll history. A recent article in Rolling Stone mentioned that the Sundance viewing of this movie was what started the ball rolling on the awesome reunion tour; Andy and Stewart were at the show, but Sting was not. However, he surprised everyone by showing up at an after-party and the three turned heads by mugging it up that night. And so it began. (I also give a lot of credit to Sting having read Andy's awesome book One Train Later: A Memoir, but hey, that's another review!)
As for the movie itself, it's great for fans. There's rare footage of the famous early US tour-in-a-van that's just amazing, as well as lots of other early gigs. Stewart re-mixes a bunch of Police tunes to great effect: I'd like a soundtrack please! Overall, it's a great look at a band's humble beginnings and rocket rise to stardom in just a few years, and shows the grind of tour-record-tour-record that the boys went through. These guys were very driven and really put in the work to make it happen. A great companion to the longer, but less focused Police: Around the World which I pray will come out on DVD soon. Highly recommended.
They were the greatest band in the world... and then they broke up........2007-05-29
As I told my 21 year old nephew recently, "They were the greatest band in the world... and then they broke up." This is their story from the ultimate insider's point of view. As a fan who didn't get to see them on the way up, I really appreciated the behind the scenes look at the early days of the band. As much as I enjoyed the film, it also made me feel like I had missed out on something... something special.
From a filmmakers point of view, well, I come from the chain saw school of editing. It could have been tighter. It does linger a bit here and there. But when you are dealing with something so personal, its hard to be objective. So, I'll cut Mr. Copeland some slack and just say "Thank you for letting us in."
Great vintage footage & dialog.......2007-05-14
This is a great addition to any fan of The Police. Stewart did a great job. It's fun and interesting to see "the guys" go from having small crowds to thousands of fans. I also like the look and feel of the super 8. Not too "Artsy", just good film making.
Enjoy!

More Historical than Entertaining.......2007-05-07
The old footage is nice to see, after not having seen anything new on The Police in several years. You really get a good feel for life on the road as the then little-known band treks across America's Heartland in the late 70s (note the t-shirt Sting wears during the recording of Zenyatta Mondatta: from Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma!). Even though Stewart Copeland shot this footage, the DVD would be a lot more watchable without his corny, hammed up narration throughout. Bad, bad, bad. But the music is still good! If nothing else, this DVD will make you get out your Police CDs and revisit all those great songs for a couple days.
It's Stewart made movie.......2007-04-28
I am a long time Police fan, and am delighted that they decided to reunite at least for a tour (a couple of new songs are rumored...you never know). This is certainly a most interesting take from the inside of their unique experience. Stewart is The Kinetic Kid by definition, and often the images reflect this very non-stop, hyper-ADD aspect of his personality. Thank goodness for his being hyper, because he has given the world some of the finest drumming ever heard by human ears. The movie is really like entering Stewart's mind. I was surprised by his very professional, patient tone of voice, while I remember him as a very fast *duh!* talker. In particular, I appreciated the parts that show the genesis of the famous riffs etched in every fan's mind, and the claustrophobic feeling brought in by the non-stop assault of the fans, a little reminding of Hard day's night. You understand why worldwide success can also last so much, as can a musician's patience, focus, and inspiration. After all, it becomes a blur, and Stewart is masterful at conveying the feelings of the Man in a Suitcase's line: "bird off a flying cage, you'll never get to know me well, the world's an oyster, a hotel room a prison cell".
I was expecting more bitching at Sting - there is some, but not so bad as I had anticipated - therefore, our Kinetic Kid was also rather well-behaved. Maybe the passing of his beloved brother Ian and of the "fourth member" Kim Turner have somewhat changed the feelings that led to the acrimonious split of a great band at the very top of their game.

Spike Lee scored his biggest hit to date with Inside Man, an unconventional thriller with fascinating details in the margins of its convoluted plot. The screenplay (by first-timer Russell Gerwitz) could've used a few more rewrites; it moves at a brisk pace but in hindsight a lot of it doesn't make sense. That makes Inside Man more fun to watch than to think about afterwards (when you discover plot holes big enough to drive a truck through), but it's curiously involving, especially as NYPD Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) struggles to outsmart a high-stakes bank robber (Clive Owen) who, along with a well-trained crew of accomplices, has seized control of a Wall Street bank, turning what initially looks like a hostage crisis into a personal crusade to expose some mysterious evil secrets. As you might expect from the director of Do the Right Thing, Lee seizes several satisfying opportunities to examine post-9/11 issues of racial prejudice and domestic terrorism, and the mysterious "problem solver" Madeline White (Jodie Foster), as eerily sinister as she is vaguely defined, is worthy of her own movie. With the benefit of his most stellar cast to date (including Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe and Chiwetel Ejiofor), Lee seems more interested in character details than well-crafted suspense, but that doesn't stop Inside Man from being engrossing, subtly amusing, and quirky enough to qualify as a welcomed break from the formulaic thrillers that are Hollywood's bread and butter.--Jeff Shannon
Description
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, Academy Award nominee Clive Owen and Academy Award winner Jodie Foster star in this intense and explosive crime thriller. The perfect bank robbery quickly spirals into an unstable and deadly game of cat-and-mouse between a criminal mastermind (Owen), a determined detective (Washington), and a power broker with a hidden agenda (Foster). As the minutes tick by and the situation becomes increasingly tense, one wrong move could mean disaster for any one of them. From acclaimed director Spike Lee comes the edge-of-your-seat, action-packed thriller that The Wall Street Journal calls "a heist film that's right on the money."
Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining, very clever.......2007-05-22
As others have indicated, if you think you have it figured out, you will be totally surprised before the end. As suspense films go, everything fits together when you get to the end with nothing that suspends belief (unlike another film I recently saw). The acting is very well done.
I gave the film only four stars because of the thoroughly gratuitous use of one very frequent four letter word. Its use is so over the top that it takes away from everything else. I saw the film in a theater. Some months later we were on an overseas flight and "Inside Man" was the in-flight movie. There were small children on the flight. I wondered how that would work, given the ubiquitous use of that word. Well, the word never occurred anywhere in the film! Further, no one's lips were out of synchronization with the dialogue at any point. I have since read that Singapore will not allow films with foul language in them. Apparently, film companies must shoot two versions of the same film. They could give us films with less objectionable material, but choose not to do so. They even have the same films with less objectionable material already available. Can I give Hollywood two stars only?
If you figured it out you're almost as clever as the kid next to me.......2007-05-13
This kind of movie prompts you to take wild guesses, but what is fun is the process and class of the movie. While the kid in the theater next to me figured it out from the start, while having some small mistakes, there was nothing lost in seeing how it all went down and the slight surprise at the end. Inside man is a feel good example of an old and dying art of the con man movie. Technology is getting far too perfect for these kind of brilliant man versus the system type movie. With the need of hacking eye scanners, finger print machines, motion sensors, time locked safes, security systems with off-shore staff that is awake twenty four hours a day, and even more things we can't even imagine but someone else did coming into play you need to be a billionaire to be a thief in the first place. So these movies will become more and more rare, so we should enjoy them while we can.
Appearances Can Be Deceiving..........2007-05-10
I have to start out by saying that as an avid movie watcher I generally try to keep an open mind when approaching a movie. With that being said there are a couple of directors that I find this to be a particularly hard task to succeed in, Quentin Tarentino is one such director and the other is Spike Lee. I have to say that whenever either of these two critically acclaimed directors releases a movie (or a `joint' as Spike Lee prefers to label them), I find it difficult to get too excited about seeing them, and sometimes I don't end up seeing the movie at all, though I try to make an effort because you never know when one might hit you just right. So, when I saw the trailer for the upcoming Spike Lee movie "Inside Man" starring Denzel Washington and Clive Owen, I was somewhat interested in it simply because I enjoy both actors' work; however, Denzel had done a Spike Lee movie before that I didn't like, so that didn't guarantee that I would enjoy him in this one. Over time I saw more trailers for the movie and read what the film was to be about and I have to say that for the first time ever, I was actually excited to see a Spike Lee movie, but whether my anticipation was misplaced or completely justified would remain to be seen.
"Inside Man" presents us with the story of a brilliant criminal mastermind (Clive Owen) who has devised the perfect bank robbery and subsequent escape without being caught by the law. However, when the plan is hatched events quickly begin to spiral out of control and the police are fast on the scene led by a cunningly smart detective (Denzel Washington) who will not rest until the situation is contained. Just when negotiations are beginning to take shape between the criminals and the police, a government power broker (Jodie Foster) interferes throwing this delicate matter into a state of uncertainty where one wrong move could spell disaster for all involved.
After watching this movie I quickly came to the conclusion that even though I generally dislike most Spike Lee movies, even he can surprise me sometimes. "Inside Man" was a wonderfully constructed cat-and-mouse thriller that was completely engrossing and a genuine surprise to me, and was by far the most mainstream Spike Lee movie to date. The story was well paced, full of twists-and-turns that you don't see coming, and the dialogue was so well-written and at times an absolute joy to listen to, especially the many exchanges between Denzel Washington and Clive Owen's characters. The acting was terrific from all actors involved, each actor was given so much to work with, which is often a rarity in an ensemble piece like this one, where there are so many A-list actors gathered in one film, generally one or two of them get shorted on development. A lot of the fun I had in watching this movie was trying to figure out the various motives every character had or which side they were truly on, so many of the characters had hidden agendas you really didn't know what to expect from any of them, which made the experience all the more enjoyable for me.
As I said earlier I'm not by any means a Spike Lee fan and enjoying this movie doesn't change that fact, but for me to have been even remotely entertained by this film is a feat in and of itself. With all that being said, I think it would be nice to see more independent-type directors, such as Spike Lee or Quentin Tarentino, make more mainstream films and maybe, just maybe, I would like their work a whole lot more than simply one movie here and there.
"Inside Man" is rated R for violence and language.
I expected more..........2007-05-07
This is one of those movies that probably would have worked better as a novel than a movie. The slow pacing left a lot to be desired. I was expecting something more brilliant than what was presented here. Dalton Russell's who, what, and when explanation was fine, but he definitely short-changed us on the why. Why the heck did he care how Case made his money? None of the robber's where Jewish. How did he learn of his past if no one else knew? Once Dalton and Ms. White had their little dicussion, hence, telling the audience the real deal, I was bored waiting for Det. Frazier and his crew to catch up. Then I wasn't rewarded well enough for the wait. Why was Dafoe in this movie? have the acting gigs dried up that badly that he's taking parts that could have easily gone to a glorified extra? Foster was good, wouldn't mind having her job. Overall, it's just okay. I like Washington more when he does character pieces compared to his action/thriller/ heist stuff. I can rarely tell those characters apart.
Hated it..........2007-05-04

Pretty good...........2007-01-05
To me, the best part of this movie is showing clips of modern SF in action and when it cuts to the team they are following around. Unfortunatly, 75% of this movie is about SF history, which I already know enough about. However, if you WANT to know about SF history, and how SF interacts with te current worl, then I recommend this to you. As far as production goes, its very well made, and not by any means "corny". Money well spent.
Not what I was expecting.......2006-08-01
The video itself wasn't bad, just wasn't what I expected. Very limited on the history, training, clandestine operations, ect. Mostly followed a Special Forces unit while they did very little. I saw a Discovery Channel show titled "Inside Navy SeALs", and I think I was expecting that quality. As stated before: Not bad, but not what I expected.
Great look at US Army special operators!.......2005-12-29
This is an up-to-date and extremely accurate look at today's US Special Forces (USSF). Rather than the typical Rambo-style portrayal of Green Berets, National Geographic has done their usual outstanding job of getting the truth in words and pictures. This is the real deal.
I am a retired US Army Special Forces officer.
excellent example of unconventional warfare .......2005-07-31
This DVD is an excellent example of unconventional warfare in action. It places U.S. Army Special Forces with their indigenous element in Afghanistan and shows extremely damning evidence of the Iraqi Government's complicity in the State sponsorship of International Terrorism under Saddam Hussein. I only wish this information had been picked up by traditional media and elaborated on more.
Previous reviews criticize the military garb, stance, and bearing of the soldiers being portrayed in the documentary. This individual is clearly unaccustomed to the unconventional warfare environment and his criticism was incredibly irrelevant. I highly recommend this video to anyone that would like a peak into the world of unconventional warfare and how the competencies of U.S. Special Forces differ from those of U.S. Navy Seals.
I liked it , good overview........2004-07-17
Its exactly what it says. Its inspiring ,focused and honest. Good if your a military buff. I keep watching it.

Of all the documentaries that deal with the horrible events of September 11, 2001, National Geographic's two-part, 3-1/2-hour program Inside 9/11 is the only one to trace the evolution of Osama bin Laden's reign of terror from its origins in the Soviet-Afghan war of the early 1980s to 9/11 and beyond. Presented as a comprehensive timeline that culminates in the hijacking of four passenger jets (including those that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York), the program incorporates news footage and archival photos, computer graphics, thoroughly researched documentation, and eyewitness interviews to build an epic chronology of Islamic fundamentalism, carried out by radical sects which, in bin Laden's own words, "love death" with a religious fervor that was largely dismissed, in the early stages of terrorist assembly, by American intelligence services. The stage is set for bin Laden's well-financed orchestration of al Qaeda activities, and Inside 9/11 reaches a factual fever pitch as it focuses on the major players (including 9/11 architect Khalil Shaikh Mohammed, hijacker pilots Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah, and other "sleeper cell" terrorists) as the countdown to 9/11 continues. What emerges from this minute-by-minute account is, in the harsh light of history, a much-needed understanding of how 9/11 happened, the conditions that led to lapses in CIA and FBI cooperation, airport security, and the "holy war" that bin Laden had so effectively precipitated. Subsequent, post-9/11 suicide missions are also included in this expansive chronology, making it potently clear that the war on terror will continue, and in some respects has only just begun. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Excellent DVD and an excellent review........2007-01-14
The DVD is ecellent. The review I refer to is written by KHEMIN on this page. It could have easily been the epilogue for this DVD. And it is not a minority view. Caesar's (another reviewer) assertion that the CIA hung out in his town keeping an eye out wouldn't surprise me in the least, considering the crew that hangs out there. I also have no doubt either that after September 11, 2001, there have been more CIA assigned to your neighborhood Caesar. Get used to it, pal.
In-depth Examination of Events.......2007-01-09
The documentary is a very in-depth examination of the events of September the 11th as well as the build-up to the attacks. It is a 5-star National Geographic production. I previewed parts of it to my high school classes and they were completely engaged. Additional bonus features that could assist with the use of the video in a classroom environment could have been useful. It's a long watch but worth ever minute.
excellent addition to anyone's collection.......2007-01-05
this dvd pretty much out shines all the rest out there. it tells everything about 9/11, including very interesting news of pre-9/11. worth every penny, and will be a very historical documentary to show your kids/grandkids in the future.
A very valuable resource.......2006-11-08
There are lots of documentaries about the events of 9/11, and all of them have their strengths and weaknesses. This one has weaknesses, too, but I don't think they matter much. It was made with a purpose in mind: to examine the evolution of bin Laden's operation beginning with the resistance to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1980 and ending with the events of 9/11. It is not-- and it's not intended to be-- a comprehensive overview of US foreign policy, the operation of the CIA, the rise of fundamentalist Islam, or anything else. Rather, it's the narrative of the time line that ends with the hijackings on 9/11.
It's composed of news footage, still photos, and interviews with eyewitnesses and participants. The end result is a sequential narrative explaining how 9/11 happened and suggesting why the intelligence community failed to understand what was happening. As is the case with most National Geographic documentaries, the production values on this DVD are very high.
Is this the last word about 9/11? Of course not, and I'd be amazed if the writers and producers thought it was. Rather, it's one resource that's very valuable for anyone who wants to understand those events. There are no doubt other resources, but that doesn't detract from the value of this one.
The Facts of 9/11 "Propaganda" only to Enemies of Good.......2006-10-30
Of all the many many documentaries recounting the despicable acts of mass murder committed in the name of Allah on that day, this is by far the most comprehensive and the most unflinching. Because of this, those whose mindsets side more with that of the terrorists will find this factual documentary somewhat distressing in its raw recitation of events. And perhaps none more so than "Caesar" in his review of Sept. 17, 2006. If only he found at least as troubling the carnage, bloodshed, and destruction deliberately perpetrated by his Islamic buddies against civilian populations. But, more on this in a bit.
As regards this extraordinary video, from the perspectives of air traffic controllers, FAA officials, NORAD and NEADS, the air crews and passengers on board each of the four doomed flights, to the testimonies of the witnesses, participants, firefighters, and all the heroes on and near Ground Zero, this is the singular documentary that takes you minute by minute through the hell deliberately planned and perpetrated by those whose religion had them believing that the execution of such hellish bloodshed granted them virgin-laden heaven. (and no... this is not the "propaganda" or view of the documentary, but instead my own conclusions drawn on many years of personal investigation of Islam).
Anyone who, like "Caesar" here, could watch this fully factual account and then call such a splendid documentary "goody-goody propaganda" "try(ing) to portray the US as good guys being hit by the bad guys..." reveals instead either their rabid religious fanaticism or otherwise their own anti-American hatred for so apparently condoning such ghastly blood-soaked horrors as the acts of "good guys" retaliating against "bad guys."
While "Caesar" (how telling a nickname) attempts to school us ignorant Americans on our country's past political-policy foibles, yet he fails to mention the billions in financial and economic aid we have given the Islamic nations, the millions in military equipment and technical advisory assistance provided them as they struggled against invading Soviet forces and/or other foreign enemies attempting to annex and rule over sovereign Islamic nations, the ousting from Kuwait of the brutal armed forces of an Islamic fascist dictator who had invaded and then "enjoyed" weeks of the metaphoric and all too literal raping in this tiny Islamic nation while openly looting, terrorizing, butchering, torturing, and murdering its citizens while none of its Islamic neighbors lifted so much as a finger to intervene, but instead begged the United Nations and the U.S. to solve their problems for them... which we did! And these are just a tiny listing of the far greater acts we have done for the cause of justice and good, and all of it on Islam's behalf. And yet, 9/11 is only the latest and greatest terrorist massacre by which we continue to be repaid by the bloodthirsty religion of Islam for all we have done and continue to do on its behalf.
"Caesar" also glaringly omits and all too conveniently ignores radical Islam's blood-soaked history and their on-going policy of religiously motivated bomb blasts, hijackings, kidnappings, tortures, rapes, gang rapes, female circumcisions, sawing and/or hacking off people's limbs and heads, mutilations, and always... mass murder after mass murder after yet more mass murder all perpetrated against civilian populations worldwide, including those of their own religion, and all thanks to Islam's foundational tenets of blood lust that makes all such horrors not only acceptable but actually laudable, eternally rewardable, and thus... forever inevitable.
True, all religions have their radicals and fanatics. But none deliberately attract, nurture, and encourage terrorist fanatics more than does Islam. And none preaches genocide against the entire Jewish race/nation and all non-Islamic "infidels" in the name of God more than does Islam. And it is how this video accurately documents for the entire world only this latest and greatest mass butchery in the name of Allah that probably motivates "Caesar" most to attempt such blatant anti-U.S. propagandizing here. And for those who would disagree, I challenge "Caesar" or anyone else to provide us any reliable evidence of even a single factual error in this documentary.
What I think "Caesar" fears most is that such a powerful documentary as this might add to the growing world view that despite the constant rhetoric of Islam as a religion of "peace," the ever-escalating terrorist acts of its leaders and constituents in the name of Islamic religion reveal the exact opposite to be the true case. Maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking any religion that so encourages its hormone-driven young men to blow themselves up with as many "infidels" as they can so as to spend eternity in orgiastic sex with 72 virgins deserves to be fully prosecuted, at the very least on charges of "conspiracy to commit (mass) murder"!
And one thought that just hit me: If more and more Islamics continue to either commit or condone such bloodshed and with the full approval of their Islamic leaders, which god are they truly honoring and emulating: Allah -- the Creator of Life; or instead, Iblis (Satan), the Destroyer of it? By their fruits are they known, after all.
And on the question of whom and what Islamics most worship and adore, permit me to close this review as also does this wonderful documentary, by quoting one of Islam's most renowned clerics:
"We love death. The U.S. loves Life. That is the big difference between us." -- Osama bin Laden

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 2004, The Sea Inside is a life-affirming film about a man who wishes to die. That may seem like a massive contradiction, but in the hands of director Alejandro Amenábar (Open Your Eyes, The Others) and actor Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls), this fact-based Spanish drama concerns the final days of Ramón Sampedro, the quadriplegic poet who waged a controversial campaign for his right to die. He was denied this right for 30 years, and ultimately arranged for his own assisted suicide, but this remarkable film--and Bardem's keenly intelligent performance--examines the hotly-debated issue of assisted suicide with admirable depth and humanity, just as Sampedro did until his death in 1998. For Sampedro, death was preferable to severe paralysis (he even refused to use a wheelchair), but the film does not suggest a "disposable" attitude toward disability. Instead, it's a thoughtful meditation on life and love as gifts to be cherished, and a challenging drama that begs each viewer to examine their own personal beliefs about what makes life worth living. You may not agree with Sampedro and his ultimate denial of life, but The Sea Inside will urge you to ponder how you would react under similar circumstances, and that makes it a profoundly meaningful film. --Jeff Shannon

After months.......2007-05-27
I will be writing a review for a film I have seen months ago. In the first place, what urged me to see this film was the impressiveness of the idea of two women falling in love with a man who is totally disabled. Then, while I was watching it, I had to question the line between life and death and how thin it can be sometimes. What I remember explicitly from the film now is how it presented love. It seems with this film that love is not only in what we do for the others but also in doing the things for the others which they want us to do and being able to see the world with the eyes of the others and being able to understand them. The sea inside is a beautiful film to see..
Very Thought Provoking.......2007-05-15
I had to watch this for one of my classes and I was amazingly surprised by how wonderful the movie was. I did not mind reading the subtitles in the least. It was a very powerful, thought provoking movie that inspires discussion. It is also a very good movie to test your moral issues. The actors are amazing and the plot is well laid out, with a very artistic approach to some aspects of it. I thought some parts of the movie were slow though, but overall, I would watch this movie over again gladly.
Beautiful........2007-04-10
I avoided this movie for a long time even though it looked like "one of those movies" I'd like, because the description just sounded so dreary and depressing. Yeah, I shed a few tears, but it was a beautiful movie. I shouldn't have put it off. Give it a try.
Exceptional in Every way.......2007-04-02
I cannot say enough about this film. The subject speaks for itself, so I won't comment on that but what proves inspiring is that this is a total love story (not only between a man and a woman). The acting all around is exceptional, and Xavier Bardem, under the direction of Alejandro Amenabar, creates a very appealing Ramon Sampedro without oversentimentalizing a subject which could have otherwise been sensationalized. Combine this with a thoughtful, interesting, philosophical dialogue, that leaves the viewer mentally revisiting the film long after its conclusion.
what is death with dignity?.......2007-01-25
I don't think this film adds anything new to the debate about so-called "death with dignity" or the right to end your own life. But it is a tender and nuanced treatment of the subject that raises the major questions and includes the major stakeholders--the legal system, a religious priest who is caricatured as moralistic and uncaring, friends, and a three-generation family that lives with and cares for the quadriplegic Ramon, who after a diving accident 26 years ago wants to end his life since, he insists, it is a life with no dignity. Ramon's brother adamantly objects: "nobody kills anyone in my house." Others are not so sure. Four women in particular loom large in the film's plot. I will not spoil Ramon's final choice, which to the film's credit is not clear until the very end. The Sea Inside is based upon a true story in Spain, and was voted Best Foreign Film for 2004. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Excellent !.......2006-07-06
An excellent report about Mecca, although the comments are a little different as on the sunna (Moslem Traditions), such as for example the history of Abraham and well of other subjects. However, the documentary is new for those which would like to know Mecca and its importance in the heart of a Moslem. In connection with South-African which was seen directing towards the camp-site of Africans of its country in the place to be with everone, it is especially not an act of racism: what he did not understand, nor the producers of the documentary, in the Mecca, the camp-sites are by countrys, so that when one loses oneself or his self, he can find or to be easily direct towards the camp-site of his country.
Inside the City of Mecca.......2006-03-30
I loved this documentary and have made copies and passed them on to about 50 other people. I just realized today I could make a review about it. Who is that guy that does the talking in the backround, whoever he is, he was born to do it. I can't recommend it enough to non-muslims who will see a White lady from Texas go to Mecca. There are white people in Texas who are turning to Islam. You can check them out at weneedtonuite.com under the videos section. I wonder what it is that makes these people continue to make Islam the fastest growing religion.
Excellent DVD.......2006-02-25
This was an excellent in-depth look at the Hajj or pilgrimage made by thousand of Muslims every year from around the world. This National Geographic DVD covers all the basics and alot more. I would reccommend this for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike
3 stars because it is too short.......2006-01-22
The video is well done, and beautifully photographed, as you'd expect from Natl Geographic. It is very educational as far as what people actually do on the Haj. I had thought the walking round the Kaaba was the climax but not so. Short, but good insight into something most non-muslims would never have the chance to see.
a very beautiful virtual hajj.......2005-11-20

More than any previous documentary about the Holocaust, Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State reveals the inner workings of the Nazi implementation of Hitler's infamous "final solution." Drawing on the latest academic discoveries, this remarkable BBC series presents a wide-ranging, meticulously researched biography of the titular "killing factory" and its evolution into a highly efficient location for industrialized extermination of well over one million Jews, gypsies, and other so-called "mongrel races" between 1940 and 1945. From "Surprising Beginnings" to "Liberation & Revenge," the six-chapter program chronicles the gradual process that escalated into the Holocaust, focusing its expansive European timeline on the detailed movements of preeminent (and highly corruptible) Holocaust engineers like Heinrich Himmler, Rudolf Höss, and "death doctor" Josef Mengele. Through painstakingly authentic reenactments of crucial meetings including the Wannsee Conference (where the "final solution" was secretly devised), we see and hear the Nazi thought processes, built on virulent hatred and bigotry, that "justified" mass murder on an unprecedented scale.
Subtle but exacting use of computer-animated effects allows three-dimensional exploration of newly discovered architectural plans and buildings long-ago destroyed, revealing the transformation of Auschwitz as World War II progressed. Along with rare archival footage, thorough documentation, and frank testimony from Holocaust survivors and Nazi perpetrators (not all of them penitent about their crimes), these programs make expert use of commanding narration by Oscar®-winning actress Linda Hunt, who brings depth and gravitas to a grim litany of sobering facts and figures. The result is an all-encompassing portrait of Auschwitz unlike anything seen before, masterfully written and produced by Laurence Rees with equal parts tenacity, intelligence, and integrity, informed by an overriding sense of moral outrage that is entirely appropriate to the history being examined. It's a remarkable achievement, as important as Shoah as a definitive exploration of one of the darkest chapters in human history. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Powerful.......2007-06-02
Can one get tired of hearing about the holocaust? Not as long as there are new things to learn - and it seems there always are. Rich with detail and new information as well as special features that interview experts and survivors, this DVD adds to our growing understanding of the Nazis and their mission. One unsettling admission is how much like "us" the Nazis seemed to be when interviewed after the war. They believed, at the time, that what they were doing was the right thing to do. They weren't, as I always thought, "just following orders." They believed in what they were doing. How often do we all say that? And how often are we just plain wrong? We need to understand these things and more if we are to truly to be able to say, "Never again!" All these years later, so little has changed.
The more we tire of hearing about the Holocaust and refuse to believe that it is a problem for today, the more vulnerable we become to its reality. I will never look away. Those people had to live it. The least we can do is to bear witness - every single time the opportunity arises.
Aimee and Jaguar
EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS.......2007-05-11
The best ever exploration of the Nazi death camps, specifically Auschwitz, but the others were much the same. A stellar production from start to finish, though the conversations by the learned few at the ends of the episodes -- and this is just my opinion -- just prove how dumb smart people can be sometimes. They add noting to this FANTASTIC production, and in fact detract from it. But not enough to take a star away. Heck, this is worth TEN STARS.
Entertaining.......2007-04-02
I give this a solid three starts because it is a quality production based on an effective mix of dramatised and original footage. The pace is natural, the scripted scenes are sometimes moving and the information is engaging however, on the whole, it is not compelling. It will complement any collection of similar nazi expositions but it will not astound or astonish.
Are You Kiddin Me!?!?!?!?.......2007-01-15
The cover of this DVD looks really interesting and plus it is made by the BBC, which I thought was definite plus, and it also had supposedly glowing reviews shown here on Amazon, so I could not wait to watch this to get the complete study of Auschwitz and the holocaust.
But to my dismay, this documentary centered completely almost througout its entirity on computer graphics, Actors , hardly any real documentary film, which is uncalled for . It was just recreated history absolutely, the producers I guess think people are just so naive to just accept everything along with whatever recreated episodes of reality that they choose. I mean we are talking absolutely rewriting history here. Nothing but recreated acting and computer graphics to show us everything. Are you people really that naive????!!!
Remarkable - A must see for anyone with an interest in the Holocaust.......2006-10-31
A wonderful documentary profiling the worst period since humans have been on this planet. Linda Hunt is a perfect choice for narrator - the rare footage and computer-enhanced graphics only add to the value of this special DVD. A horrific time, presented as factually as possible. Bravo! Everyone should see this - it should be used in all schools as an educational tool and a warning to all.

This moving, absorbing documentary is about the making of singer-songwriter Warren Zevon's final CD, the much-admired, star-studded The Wind. But more than that, it's about the final year of Zevon's life, and the way he approached what he called his "imminent demise" (which came in September '03). Zevon surely didn't plan on dying of lung cancer (although given his wry, sly, subversive sense of humor, he probably saw it as a good career move). But when doctors gave him the word, he became driven by an intense desire, and then urgency, to finish the music and leave a lasting farewell before his final goodbye; and he did, with the help of Bruce Springsteen, members of the Eagles, Ry Cooder, and others. Zevon is without self-pity; he knows what's coming, he's dealing with it, and in the process, an artist who'd always been preoccupied with death in his songs wrote some of his best when faced with his own mortality. Add to that a generous helping of bonus material (videos of two songs from The Wind, with Springsteen on "Disorder in the House"; interviews, home movies, excerpts from the sessions), and you've gotta figure Zevon himself would be pleased. --Sam Graham

Good-Bye My Friend.......2007-05-12
A heart-felt tribute to a man so far ahead of his peers it's scary. His kind come among us far too seldomly. This planet is better becaused he crossed our path. It hurts to watch it.
A Nice Send-Off for Warren.......2007-01-03
This is well worth watching for any Zevon fan. I wish there was more of the appearance on Letterman however. Anyway, I found it interesting, funny and sad.
A bittersweet look at Warren Zevon's last days..........2006-08-27
You don't have to be a big fan of Warren Zevon - although I am - to enjoy this poignant look at his final days, as he records his brilliant final album. His visit from Bruce Springsteen, and to David Letterman's "Late Show," are particularly moving.
Good Times.......2005-03-10
The late Warren Zevon was the Grim Reaper's personal poet laureate and court jester throughout his long career. Hard to believe that only one of these songs (as far as I know) was written after he learned of his diagnosis. Son Jordan and longtime producer/cowriter/bassist Jorge Calderon assembled many of Zevon's closest collaborators, sidemen, cronies and admirers for a romp through both the sardonic, gallows-humor pieces he was famous for, but also the vulnerable, emotionally raw ballads he was equally adept at writing and delivering.
Zevon liked singing actors for their ability to deliver the emotional content of a song, so he'd be pleased by Sandler's surprisingly muscular
Beautiful.......2005-01-16
VH1 (Inside) Out is great.
Every Warren Zevon fan, and even if you are not a fan, will love it.

I know this movie won't be shown at the boys and girls club! It is awful.

Inside the Vatican.......2007-05-15
Good graphics. Loved the tape. I have seen the outside of the vatican and this was a way for me to see the inside of it.
A big mistery discovered.......2006-11-05
This is an in-depth vision to all people who wants but can't get inside the walls of one of the most emblematic buildings and "treasure container" of our history. This is a great tv series collection.

Strictly for the devout Catholic viewer.......2006-07-27
I was disappointed in this video. I came to it not as a devout Catholic but as a fan of travel videos. In other words, I watched this video with the same motivation I would have to watch Shackleton's Antarctic exploration, or something from the Globe Trekker series.
With that in mind, the target audience for this video is not me. It is the religious Catholic. Therefore, from my perspective, I can't recommend it. I'm not one for all the pomp and circumstance of religion. I don't enjoy worshipping the "Holy Father", or watching the construction of the clownish uniform of the Swiss Guard.
If you are a devout Catholic you will probably enjoy this video. If you are not, and just came to the video because you wanted a Globe Trekker style tour of the Vatican, you are likely to be disappointed.
And that is what these reviews are for - to let you know whether you will enjoy the video or not.
More than I expected !!.......2005-09-24
In 2 weeks, I will actually be at the Vatican for my first visit. This wonderful DVD showed me places and things that I will never be able to see as a tourist, but just knowing about the workings of the Vatican will add such a richness of knowledge to visit. This is a beautifully done 90 min DVD as only National Geographic could have done. I was thrilled with every minute I spent watching it and will enjoy watching it many more time when I get home --- to remember my trip.
Inside the Vatican - An Excellent Buy!.......2005-07-28
An excellent film showcasing the splendor that is the Vatican. Sit back as National Geographic takes you on an "All Access Pass" through the halls of the Vatican. See the important pieces of art and how they are restored and protected, visit the workshop of the Swiss Guard where you will see a uniform made...the very same way they were made many years ago. Martin Sheen narrates this fantastic journey...it is quite simply a must have!
