Cate Blanchett blazes through The Missing, a new Western directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13). The camera truly loves the planes of her face; even dusty and bedraggled, she radiates star power--which is good, because The Missing needs it. When her daughter is kidnapped by renegade Indians, Maggie Gilkeson (Blanchett) is forced to turn to her estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones, Men in Black, The Fugitive), a man who abandoned her as a child to join an Indian tribe. Together, they pursue a malignant brujo (or witch), who sells young girls in Mexico. The Missing features solid supporting performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Eric Schweig, Aaron Eckhart, Val Kilmer, and feisty young Jenna Boyd as Maggie's youngest daughter Dot, who refuses to be left behind. Despite the cast and some gorgeous cinematography, though, The Missing never finds its stride. --Bret Fetzer

Amazon.com essential video

Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars like a tour guide.......2007-05-30

This is a classic film anD while watching it is like having a tour of Rome, all the sights and famous monuments . If you have ever been to Rome it brings back all the memories of your own Roman Holiday.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-25

This film is the sweetest, most lovable romantic film ever. This film encouraged my uncle to become a reporter!

5 out of 5 stars How many people know Dalton Trumbo actually wrote the screenplay? .......2007-04-17

I remember the first time I saw this movie, as a child, with the absolutely radiant Audrey Hepburn in her first major role as the naive, protected Princess determined to have her day of freedom and to escape from her overscheduled, dreary routine.
How lucky Hepburn was to have Gregory Peck as a costar, a man who was gallant (and wise) enough to insist she be listed as a costar, right up there alongside him in the credits. The studio wanted to use the words "and introducing Audrey Hepburn" in the credits but Peck believed -and turned out to be right- that she would win the Academy Award for her excellent portrayal, which may seem a bit over the top to today's audiences but absolutely charmed viewers at the time (I still love the movie).
The story behind this movie is nearly as fascinating as the movie itself and it is worth buying this Collector's Edition to get some of that behind the scenes info in the special sections. Frank Capra was set to direct the movie but when he found out that the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo was the scriptwriter, he bailed. That's when Wyler stepped in, letting Trumbo do the writing but having another writer "front" for him. It took years for Trumbo to be duly recognized.
I do believe this film is best seen in black and white, as it was intentionally filmed this way. Why? Because it was shot on location, in Rome, at a time when movies were often filmed in Hollywood, with backdrops to give the illusion of another country. But not THIS time. However, Wyler feared that if the movie was shot in color, Rome might overshadow the story itself. As it is, some have called Rome the third "character" in this film and it benefits greatly by being shot on location.

5 out of 5 stars The classics keep getting better........2007-04-04

What more can be said about this film? Filmed on location in Rome, Italy in the fifties. Greg Peck and Audrey Hep. Nuff said!

5 out of 5 stars Roman Holiday.......2007-03-19

One of the greatest movies of all time. Audrey Hepburn is breathtakingly flawless.

Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic My Favorite Wife. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his Maverick impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. Interestingly, this remake was originally developed for Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin as the never completed Something's Got to Give. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Doris Day/James Garner romantic comedy.......2007-06-28

MOVE OVER, DARLING (1963) offers delightful romantic comedy fun for fans of Doris Day and James Garner. This color and CinemaScope remake of the Irene Dunne-Cary Grant MY FAVORITE WIFE (1940) is so close to the B&W original that WIFE's writers get screenplay credit. DARLING is about a man (Garner) marrying his second wife (Polly Bergen) and honeymooning in a fancy Monterey hotel when his first wife (Day) shows up alive after a several year's absence. So we have a screwball comedy treatment of bigamy, with Bergen in suite C wondering why Garner keeps going to Doris in suite A or down to the hotel lobby for an all evening shave..

Whole scenes here are duplicated in WIFE, sometimes with the same dialogue. But I like DARLING more because it adds a wild car chase and a hilarious scene with Doris going in an open convertible through a carwash. And the supporting cast here is spectacular: Thelma Ritter, Fred Clark, Don Knotts, John Astin, Edgar Buchanan as the Judge, Chuck Connors as hunky "Adam", the list goes on. All are wonderful. WIFE cannot begin to match them, despite a good script.

MOVE OVER, DARLING is not a musical. There are no songs. But this was the 1960's, when Doris was making romantic comedies with (ironically) Cary Grant or James Garner, and not musicals. This started out as a vehicle called SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, with Marilyn Monroe, and was left unfinished with Marilyn's tragic death in 1962. It was revamped a year later into DARLING with Day and Garner and Bergen. Complicating matters is that MY FAVORITE WIFE is itself a remake of the D. W. Griffith silent drama, ENOCH ARDEN (1911), based on the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson! That version plays complete at 35 minutes as a wonderful bonus with DARLING; it has been supplied from the Library of Congress.

Besides all that exists of ENOCH ARDEN, liberal bonuses with MOVE OVER, DARLING include a behind-the-scenes filmmaking documentary, a Marilyn vs. Doris featurette, and a welcome chat with a still-beautiful Polly Bergen. It's not a masterpiece, but still one of Doris Day's most enjoyable films. Love that carwash scene and Don Knotts playing a shoe salesman sex symbol!

This is a great movie. i love the whole movie but the car wash scene is awesome and one of my favourites.

Disney's 1986 Flight of the Navigator combines a strong ensemble cast and classic '80s soundtrack with dazzling special effects for a high-flying sci-fi adventure. While searching for his little brother in the woods, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like minutes, he returns home, only to discover that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead. Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. His only chance of escape is in the spacecraft manned by Max, a wisecracking robot. Cramer gives an earnest performance, which overcomes an imperfect script, while enough one-liners and imaginative animation will keep families engaged. Watch for Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film appearances. Rated PG for language. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful classic.......2007-05-08

I love reminiscing about watching and enjoying this movie as a child. Viewing it now, I find a different and delightful humor that I hadn't conceived in my early years. Great fun for the whole family.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Family Viewing.......2007-05-08

I recently bought this video to watch with my 5 year old son and he loved it. I remembered enjoying it when it came out, and my memories did not disappoint me. The story-line is rather simple, which make it fairly easy for children to follow, but remain interesting enough for adults to enjoy as well. Like the plot, the graphics and special effects won't bowl you over but are done well enough to tell the story. A great addition to the colection of young sc-fi lovers.

I have been looking for this movie for awhile and i am so glad to been able to purchase it. Wonderful family movie.

I grew up on "Flight of the Navigator." I wanted my own children to see it, but our local video store did not have it for rent. Amazon always has what I am looking for, so I ordered a copy. My kids absolutely love it! I recommend it for anyone looking for a good, clean, family film that everyone will enjoy. Thank you Amazon!

In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

2 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Let-Down........2007-07-02

As one whose entire family were enthralled by the visual and literary beauty, charm, and inspirational nature of "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea," I was notably deflated by this film. The great expectations and anticipation that preceeded the the release of "The Continuing Story" were unfortunately unjustified, and I set myself up for a bit of a let-down. Actually, that may be quite an understatement.

The first visual impression was that of "age," especially as the term applies to the actors. While I expected great things from the anticipated wedding of Gilbert and Anne, such as the event taking place appropriately soon after the beginning of "The Continuing Story," I did not expect the forthcoming disappointment. What should have been the climactic event of the film was unduly rushed, and it seemed like a mere afterthought as it was presented. But returning to the theme of "age," Anne, Gilbert, and the collection of former classmates that included Anne's "bosom friend" Diana, all appeared to be well into their thirties, not their early twenties. In other words, "The Continuing Story" did a rather poor job of actually accomplishing a seamless continuance.

The story itself was quite improbable, and it was far too long. I actually found myself squirming, trying to mentally accelerate a story that was mired in continuing intrigues that were definitely far from the thematic peace, love, charm and goodness one would normally associate with Green Gables and Avonlea.

1 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story.......2007-06-19

I was so dissapointed with this i gave it away unlike the first two i wouldnt watch again, it had not one ounce of the magic the first two had! it was a total waste of time making it!

2 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment.......2007-06-18

Like many other Anne fans, I was excited to hear that a third Anne movie was in the works, and I watched it on PBS when it first aired. Even my attachment to the characters and interest in the first world war could not make this tripe enjoyable. As many others have already mentioned, there were four more books from which Kevin Sullivan could have drawn, but instead he made this awful mess. If you are a fan of the books, save your money. There is nothing of LMM in this film and not even the charming Follows and Crombie can save it.

At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. Psycho gets the masterpiece treatment it deserves on DVD, with extras including newsreel footage surrounding the making and release of the movie; an archive of production stills; the special trailer in which Hitchcock (acting as one of the original Universal Studio tour guides) himself leads viewers around the Bates place; credit designer Saul Bass's original "shower scene" story boards; posters and advertising materials for the movie's William Castle-like publicity campaign (No One Will Be Seated After the Feature Begins!); and a 90-minute documentary on the making of the film! What more could any movie fan possibly want? --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Psycho.......2007-06-28

Made at the peak of his career in 1960, "Psycho" was suspense master Hitchcock's last and most famous black-and-white picture--and a film that inaugurated the sub-genre of slasher movie. By the standards of today's gore-fests, it's a fairly restrained murder mystery, but disturbing nonetheless, achieving its chills more by what is withheld than shown. Hitchcock knows just how to heighten our dread of who or what might be at the top of the stairs, or beyond that shower curtain. The terrifying "Psycho" stands above most any psychological thriller made since.

3 out of 5 stars Still Waiting For Anamorphic Widescreen!.......2007-06-13

Attention widescreen t.v. owners: this dvd is not in anamorphic widescreen(enhanced for 16 x 9). A couple of years ago "Psycho" was re-released on dvd in the Alfred Hitchcock collection. It is in anamorphic widescreen. Since then Universal has been SLOWLY releasing titles from the collection in anamorphic for the first time. Well when do we get "Psycho"???!!! I'd love to add this film to my collection, but will not do it until it is properly presented for widescreen t.v.

I love the horror films from the 20's,30's 40's and the HAMMERS
but again thank you movie Psycho for the breath of fresh air.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU ALFRED!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

This movie is not R rated it should be PG like Vertigo. The shower scene is one of the most famous scenes in history and my favorite charactor is "mother" because you dont see her till the end.
My favorite part is when the detective gets stabbed and falls down the stairs.
I love the music that plays in the shower scene because the strings are so high pitched it sounds like screaming.
When I get older I want to make a Psycho of my own.

5 out of 5 stars Eee--eee--eee--eee .......2007-04-07

Alfred Hitchcock's amazing movie Pscho is a must see. It's thrilling, shocking, eerie, and has a plot twisting excitement that will keep your heart pounding from the beginning to end.
For it's time this movie is an Oscar!

Typically categorized as a horror film, The Wicker Man is actually a serious and literate thriller about modern paganism, written by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth) with a deft combination of cool subjectivity and escalating dread. (Despite this promising directorial debut, British filmmaker Robin Hardy didn't make another film until The Fantasist, a little-seen thriller released in 1986.) We're introduced to the friendly but mysterious residents of Summerisle (located off the west coast of Scotland), where the isolated community enacts rituals that seem, at first, to be merely unconventional. When called in to investigate an anonymous tip about a missing child, mainland police sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) is treated as an outsider, and the ominous Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) has the inside advantage. As the repressed policeman is taunted by the island's sensuous atmosphere, his investigation leads to increasingly disturbing implications.

With phallic symbols and soothing music at every turn, Summerisle is a pleasant haven for those who perform the pagan rituals of Lord Summerisle's maverick ancestors. These earthy ceremonies are presented with alluring authenticity, and the island's tempting eroticism is fully expressed by the landlord's daughter (Britt Ekland), who fills Howie with barely suppressed carnal desire. (Sirens took a comedic approach to a similar situation in 1994.) And yet the mystery of the missing girl remains, with clues that hint at a darker reality beneath the colorful local customs. When that reality is ultimately discovered, Howie becomes the crucial element in the islanders' most elaborate ritual, which is where the film's title comes into play. It may not be horror, but it is horrific, and this makes The Wicker Man an unforgettable film. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Top of the Line, Wonderful Movie!.......2007-07-05

I saw this original film before DVDs were invented. It was 1980, I believe. Saw it on regular TV at the time. What a shame, what with all the commercials and no FF,RW, or pause; but let me say this.......it was just awesome. If a movie doesn't grab me in the first 10 minutes, then I'm not devoted to paying attention to it fully; NOT the case HERE !! It kept my attention start to finish! Oh the end........so disturbing. I have been looking for this movie in Video stores, just to be let down & only finding the "2006" version, which I won't even watch - because I know it can't come close....Nicholas Cage in no form or fashion can take the place of Edward Woodward in this movie because once you've seen the original, you try and vision a different actor taking Ed Woodward's place, and it just don't jibe.(although I am indeed a fan of Nick Cage). I fell in love with Edward Woodward during the film. His character is an honest, true-to-himself & his religion man, sticks to his morals no matter how difficult, and believes there's more than meets the eye in the "missing girl" investigation - and goes with it wholeheartedly, only to find himself in a dreadful, tragic circle in which he can't escape. So truly mindboggling and horribly melancholy. At the same time the Scotland scenery is beautiful & old, historically binding. I'm a fan of Irish & Scottish accents anyway. The ending is as surprising as is the whole film in a nutshell. Sadness & confusion, devastation & disbelief are the feelings that run through me all the while during this movie. I simply consider it one of the BEST movies of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Cult Classic Fearful of Faith.......2007-07-02

The Wicker Man is a film about a pious Catholic sergeant's visit to a small island off the coast of Scotland called the Island of Summerisle. His name is Neil and he is there to investigate the disappearance of a girl. His investigation reveals that the island is enamored with a neo-pagan religion. They worship the sun instead of Jesus. They engage in pagan fertility rituals instead of Neil's proud pre-marital chastity. They believe in reincarnation where the Christian canon Neil is devoted to does not. As if the islanders are telepathically connected, Neil receives absolutely no help from anyone in his investigation. He gradually puts together more and more details about the inhabitants' practices and is suspicious of everyone.

A May Day festival approaches and Neil becomes concerned that the girl who is missing may indeed be the latest sacrifice to appease nature. But as the Island owner Lord Summerisle reveals, Neil too is a virgin and is both wise and foolish. He comes as a king representing Her Majesty's government. He also arrives to a place of sacrifice by his own free will. The final sequence of the Wicker Man is the ultimate warning toward blind faith. Anyone who misses the point here, like the makers of the 2006 remake of the Wicker Man did, will clearly find little resolution in the end but others willing to enjoy and exercise their imagination a little bit will have much to mull over.

The film's music is one of its strengths and the detail of the pagan references and how they are convenient roots to many Christian traditions (i.e. Easter icons and Beltane or May Day) help to make the overall vision of the Wicker Man even more compelling. All of the elements within the film melt together and everyone working it must've understood these ideas in perspective.

The funny thing about the Wicker Man is it is often referred to as a Horror film. There really isn't anything else to call it but it is almost too unique and exceptional to be deemed a horror film. It isn't scary like a typical horror film is. It doesn't elicit fear and disgust the way all other horror films have. There are no zombies, vampires or murdering sociopaths. There are no supernatural forces and there is little blood to be spilled. It isn't characterized by that one note creepy music or menacing Hitchcockian suspense. It doesn't rely on knives and masked killers stalking in the night. It doesn't even need a seemingly indestructible villain. The Wicker Man is a film that relies exclusively on its all encompassing atmosphere and it also relies on our own understandings of religion and faith. It is sunny, it is bright, it is cheerful, but for all of the wrong reasons to many of us. It is compelling all throughout. Somehow on this island paganism resurfaced and the worshippers are fiercely and irrationally devout. That point's layers of commentary aside, the Wicker Man is very much a horror film and it is probably more intelligent than any other movies within its genre.

5 out of 5 stars The Original .......2007-06-19

My oppinion: The Wicker Man is a disturbing cult/Sacrafice movie. This is the original Wicker Man movie and it's more disturbinjg than the remak.

about The Film: The wicker man is about a pagen cult who trick this christian inspector to come to thier island to find a girl who really isn't missing.

Second oppinion. the Wicker man might not be for everybody. but if you like good horror films this one is for you.

If you liked this movie check out The Wicker Man(2006) Version & the wicker Man Soundtrack

4 out of 5 stars This Version Should Win Any Straw Poll.......2007-06-12

This original "Wicker Man" (forget about the Nicholas Cage re-make) starts like a somewhat more conventional B-horror film. There are the purposefully unhelpful townspeople on the British island where Edward Woodward is sent to investigate the report of a missing girl. There are sidelong glances and whispers. Mysterious rites are practiced. All these slightly clichéd goings-on build mild suspense. But it's the twist-ending, with its awakening overturn of conventional role assignments, that is the real pay-off of the film.

What's more, Edward Woodward found the perfect defining role for himself here, even though he would probably prefer to be praised for his more "important" roles in Shakespearean works, in "Breaker Morant," or even as "The Equalizer" in the TV series. But here he portrays the supreme rectitude that he always seems to be striving towards in his other screen appearances. He is a man of proper, classical demeanor - a very rare kind of man who will not betray his principles for the expedient of satisfying any passing desire. It's the role that made me a Woodward fan.

As a bonus for male viewers, Britt Ekland does the most sumptuously erotic dance here that I think has ever been captured on camera.

All in all, "Wicker Man" ignites from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Little Toaster--a timeless classic.......2007-06-01

I discovered this movie 20 years ago when my own children--3 boys were little. It was my middle son's most favorite movie; he watched it all the time. I now have a niece and nephew (both age 3)--and I was wracking my brain for ideas on what to get them when I remembered this video. I sent it to them both for their birthdays and got rave reviews back from their mothers--so I would call this a timeless classic with a wonderful message for children (and adults too!). I'm so glad I found this on AMAZON.com.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time!.......2007-05-19

One of the five worst movies I've ever seen. Many of the scenes did nothing to enhance the plot, which I couldn't quite swallow anyway. A kid played with a toaster and a vacuum cleaner? Isn't that a little dangerous and wierd? The songs seemed forced, and, again, didn 't really help the story along. The parts shop scene scared my 4 year-old. I've seen PG movies that were less scary. I could go on and on, but I'll spare you any more bizarre, boring details from the movie and just encourage you NOT to waste time or money on this poor excuse for a Disney movie.

4 out of 5 stars Walt's fevered acid trip.......2007-03-18

This is a bizarre and subversive movie. Five appliances discover they've been abandoned and decide to take it on the lam, strapped to a rolling chair with a battery for power. They go to the city to find The Master. The Master now lives with sophisticated citified appliances who want nothing to do with the hicks. There's a TV set with a mad saleman. The Master has an ethnic girlfriend. They all end up in a terrifying junkyard where the doomed cars sing about their glory days, far behind them as they get dragged into the smasher. It all ends well (it is Disney, after all) but not before your tongue dries out because you mouth has been hanging open, slack jawed, during the entire length of this movie. It scared both of my kids when they were little, too. Wierd stuff. The toaster's nightmare about forks being jammed into his slots is a definite highlight.

3 out of 5 stars a TV Classic !!.......2007-03-08

Great movie, full of friendship values. I remember watching it while I was a kid, and I loved the story, very warm. Please get it for your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual Disney Offering.......2007-03-03

THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER is definitely not the typical Disney film but it is well made and memorable. Sure, there is threatened violence toward kitchen appliances but most good kid's stories seem to have their scary touches and all ends happily. Some good lessons about bravery, friendship and loyalty can be learned along the way. Watch it with your kids and take time to discuss the story.

PEOPLE:

The DULCIMER is not on the Varese cd but it is on other cd which is accompanying a book. You can buy here on AMAZON. The book with the 16-track cd calls:

"CASE HISTORY OF A FILM SCORE - BY HENRY MANCINI - EDITED BY ROY PHILLIPPE.
WARNER"
IT SAYS: "the book and cd are specially rewarding for Thorn Birds fans who spent $25 on Varese Sarabande's 2-CD soundtrack only to discover that the dulcimer- the central instrument of the score - was inexplicably missing from the main-title track and that the extensive liner notes barely discuss the score (and don't include a single quote from the composer about his music, despite the fact that a little resarch would have turned up three extensive interviews that Mancini gave about the music of The thorn birds). Both of these omissions are rectified by the book and accompanying CD. The main title is intact, complete with dulcimer overlay, and Mancini's discussion of the project is so thorough that all of our questions about this remarkable score are answered at last".

Plus the Dulcimer the book "Case History of a film score" has more: the piano when Ralph sees Meggy slowly coming down the stairs at Mary's birthday party... . This music is missing from the Varese cd, but it is here on this extra cd - Case History. It's wonderful!!

I bought this set as a gift for my mom for Christmas. She is a huge fan of the movies and the book so obviously it was a HUGE hit! The big advantage to this purchase was in the past just the original movie cost quite a bit; however, buying the set this way was much more inexpensive than one movie had been in the past. Great buy and a great gift!

James Stewart, at his warmest and most avuncular, plays the bandleader who rocketed to fame during the swing era. The Glenn Miller Story may be a whitewashed version of Miller's life, but it certainly is a pleasant example of the feel-good Hollywood biopic, with the usual conventions: early struggles, loyal wife (June Allyson at her chirpiest), personal sacrifice--Miller joins the Army when war breaks out, although he doesn't have to--and ultimate tragedy. All the Glenn Miller classics filling the soundtrack make the film pretty easy to take, too: "Moonlight Serenade," "A String of Pearls," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." Miller plays the great "In the Mood" with his military band during a World War II air-raid warning. Pure corn, but it works. Director Anthony Mann, better known for his superb series of hard-bitten fifties westerns with Stewart, keeps the story moving gently and gracefully. A hot jazz interlude features Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Glenn Miller's music still lives.......2007-06-11

The music of Glenn Miller defined the music of the WWII generation. If you remember the music or just really like the "Big Band" sound of that time (like I do) this is a great DVD to have. Jimmy Stewart is believable as the lanky Miller. The photos of the young GIs marching in review before the commanding general with smiles on their faces and a swagger in their steps are priceless to see. I love those young men of the Greatest Generation. My dad, mom, aunts, uncles, father and mother-in-law were a part of them. When I look at the young faces of the GIs I want to cry for them. A great movie to watch and to get to hear some really rousing big band sound from your TV again. We have lost a lot of great musicians to plane crashes. Miller's plane was hit by a bomb from a bomber flying back to base with bombs still on board who was told to drop them in the ocean. A terrible shame, a waste, and a loss.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2007-05-12

Generational, touching and the music speaks for itself. What a loss of a talent!

5 out of 5 stars The Glenn Miller Story.......2007-04-25

If you like Glenn Miller, you will love this movie. I first saw it when it first came out in 1954. It is a great story about the man who wanted to develope his own sound. Jimmy Stewart and June Allison play very believeable parts, depicting the early life and final days of a great love and a great musician. The band in the movie includes many original Glenn Miller Orchestra members. Also interesting to see was a young Harry Morgan.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless story for musicians.......2007-04-15

My sons are musicians who have experienced setbacks and success and then setbacks again, and the fact that Glen Miller pressed on to find his sound always inspires us to keep at it! We realize that Jimmy Stewart played Jimmy Stewart, and June Allyson played June Allyson, but it's still a feel good movie, even tho you know the end. Definitely a good one for encouraging us to keep at it, no matter what our struggle.

4 out of 5 stars Superb, but..........2007-06-08

This film is superb. I watched it many times as a young child, and am thrilled to be able to watch it again as an adult. It's one of the rare few films with more than enough wonder to hold the attention of a child, yet enough depth and honesty to touch the soul of a grown up; a deeply meaningful, poinient animated classic. Another reviewer described it as the "best animated film ever," and while I'm not quite bold enough to echo that sentiment, I can't seem to think of one that surpasses it at the moment.

That said, I'm deeply irritated by the edits that were made. The producers who did it should be ashamed of themselves for altering a single word. Who exactly did they think they were protecting? Or was it just a money thing? Stupid fools. Unchanged, it would get 5 stars, but I in good concience, I must give it 4 stars for that reason along.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-21

The presentation (picture and sound) are excellent. The edits mentioned are very annoying (and not edited out of the earlier DVD edition) but the widescreen presentation is much nicer to watch. The extra features are somewhat interesting but do not reveal anything very interesting about the movie itself (story-writing, making of, casting, etc.). Worth getting, but I am also keeping my earlier DVD for posterity.

4 out of 5 stars The Last Unicorn Anniversary Edition DVD.......2007-05-15

My little girl and I both really liked this DVD, especially the enhanced 5.1 sound and cleaned up video transfer.
Really, my only gripe with this edition is the small edits that remove a couple of uses of the words "damn" and "hell," that I recall were used in the older versions.
As far as price, order accuracy, speed of delivery, and payment and shipping accuracy, I cannot complain at all.
I ordered online on a Saturday afternoon, and it was waiting for me before the following Friday.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful DVD . . . but may disappoint some fans.......2007-05-03

The color is beautiful and crisp and the audio is crystal clear. and what might be unforgivable to some . . . is the editing of "damn". It appears three times . . . if my memory serves me right. The first time it is spoken by Ruk("I don't care how many damn spells you put on her! Get rid of that harpy!) the bad guys can say damn. But the good guys obviously can't. They're removed it from both Molly's speech and Lir's exclamation as he asending the steps to meet Amalthea. They very neatly edited it out. You won't notice it if you haven't memorized the script, but for those who have(like me) it ruins one of the most moving speeches in the movie. What does this movie have a G rating anyway? Busty trees, naked ladies and crazed, nipply harpies . . . slap a PG on "The Late Unicorn" and give my "Damn!", damnnit!
I'm also disappointed that they used Mia Farrow's singing for "Now that I'm a Woman" when the german soundtrack has a different woman sing the song. I thought they would remove Mia's singing and use the better version.
It's a shame that after all this work that went into this release, they changed the one thing that did matter to fans and didn't change the other thing that obviously needed to be changed.
I'm not sorry I bought it, i got 2 dvd of it i love the last Unicorn however. It's a major improvment on the old DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Cult Classic For All Ages.......2007-04-19

I remember watching this film as a child (whether is was renting it, owning it, or seeing it on the Disney Channel) and it's one of those old classics that has managed to reappear in my movie library. I had the beat up VHS copy last and I've recently given it the upgrade it deserved (especially after the VHS mysteriously disapeared when I wasn;t home...seriously, that did happen and it sucked! But back to my review) and I have to hand it to you...The picture: MUCH clearer (and wider too), the colors: As BRIGHT and RICH as ever, and the sound: Good old America, CAN'T GET ANY BETTER than that! So there's my review, but the re-release becuase A.) It was recent and B.) You'll love it!!
