Lauren Ambrose shines in this offbeat family drama about a high school graduate, Evie (Ambrose), blowing a series of college-admission interviews, embracing loneliness, and giving mixed signals to a boy (Fran Kranz) who has loved her since grade school. Meanwhile, Evie's distracted mother, Martha (Amy Madigan), prepares to present her other daughter, Emily (Taylor Roberts), a retarded savant, to the world as a wunderkind poet (the poems are actually Evie's) while her dad, Harry (John Savage), an investment banker, never emerges from his basement hobby room. The imaginative story, based on a play by Dawn O'Leary (who wrote the adapted screenplay), is slightly strained within the parameters of a feature film. But Admissions is graced by a number of strong, memorable individual scenes and some sensitive, deeply touching performances, including Christopher Lloyd's work as a remote, lonely teacher briefly aroused by Martha's quixotic mission to unveil Emily's miraculous lyricism. --Tom Keogh

Justin Long has been hovering on the edges of movies like The Break-Up and Dodgeball, providing little comic bursts that are often funnier than the rest of the movie. In Accepted, Long plays Bartleby Gaines, a fast-talking slacker who, when he gets rejected by every college he applied to, invents a phony college to get his parents off his back. Unfortunately, the website his best friend creates is too effective--hundreds of other rejects apply and are accepted. Instead of revealing the hoax, Gaines decides to forge ahead and let the students create their own curriculum, little suspecting that their school is obstructing the expansion plans of the nearby snobbish college. Accepted is much better than you might expect, given the low bar set by most campus comedies; it aims for, and sometimes achieves, the blend of slapstick and social satire that Animal House embodied. Long proves to be a charming leading man without losing his quirky comic sense and the supporting cast is consistently entertaining, particularly stand-up comedian Lewis Black, who delivers a variety of sardonic rants about society. Accepted's critique of conformism is glib--you wish they'd given it a little more bite--but it's still valid and a pleasant sliver of substance in an otherwise vapid genre. --Bret Fetzer

Great Movie... had me laughing the whole time!.......2007-06-27
Looking for a night of fun and laughs then I would definitely recommend this movie! You will lose your breath laughing so hard!
A FUNNY HOMAGE TO ANIMAL HOUSE & 80 SCHOOL COMEDIES!.......2007-06-08
This movie really surprised me! It is one of the better school based comedies to come out in a long time! Justin Long does a pretty good job carrying this film with the help of some odd,but likable characters. It even has a decent message! I'm sure there are a lot of parents who would like to send there less then steller offspring to a place like "South Harmond Institute of Technology". This is worth watching if not owning for sure.
A mini 2000s Animal House.......2007-05-01
In the tradition of Animal House, there have been a few great college movies here and there. I was pleasently surprised that this was right up there with them.
Bartelby has been rejected by every college he applied to, as have his friends. Instead of wallowing in misery, he gets a friend to create a website of a fake college to escape the wrath of his parents. They rent an abandoned psychiatric hospital, clean it up, and create a fake college from the ground up. Unexpectedly, hundreds of other burn outs who also didn't get accepted show up, as acceptance is just one click away. Bartelby and his friends are forced to create a class schedule and activities, run a business, and compete with the inevitable rival frat house on the real college campus across the street.
What was so hilarious about this movie is the fact that even for a moment, Bartelby and his friends thought they could get away with this. Not just for themselves, but for all those hundreds of people who also showed up. There is the obvious comic talent of Justin Long and the man they hire to be their dean, Lewis Black, along with the rest of the cast. Plus the set up of the fake college is hilarious : a half pipe for skateboarding, swimming pool with an open bar, etc. Good times.
Fun Comedy with Charming Actors.......2007-04-16
I recently reviewed Talladega Nights, the Legend of Ricky Bobby, and gave it 3 stars. It felt like it was missing something. This movie reminded me of what was missing in Ricky Bobby and a lot of other comedies. Accepted was not only a fun comedy movie with delightful young actors, especially Justin Long; but it also had a nice little message about everyone having their place in life. Most comedies strive to grab you with dirty humor or little sight gags. I really enjoyed Accepted for the fun film that it was. The movie did not try to be more than it was, a nice little 90 minute film with some great scenes and memorable characters. Well deserving of its PG-13 rating. A surprising 4 star movie.
I loved this movie!!.......2007-03-28
I enjoyed "Accepted" because it didn't take it self so seriously.I liked the concept of making up a fictional college. The DVD bonus features are fun as well. The deleted scenes and the bloopers reel and the other features are fun must own HD DVD Title.

A May-December romance turns metaphysical in P.S., from the director of the critically acclaimed Roger Dodger. Louise (Laura Linney, You Can Count On Me, Kinsey) has a warm friendship with her ex-husband and a satisfying position as an admissions officer for Columbia University, but she's never gotten over losing her first love from high school. When a young man with the same name, face, and artistic talents (Topher Grace, Traffic) as her lost love suddenly arrives for an admissions interview, Louise tumbles into an abrupt and questionable relationship. P.S. is at its best when it follows the tics and foibles of human behavior; Linney and Grace both give vivid, lively performances. But every time reincarnation rears its head, the movie flounders, particularly in clumsy scenes with Louise's predatory best friend (Marcia Gay Harden, Mystic River), who stole Louise's boy so long ago. Fortunately (or strangely), that element is almost a tacked-on subplot; center stage is the romance between Linney and Grace, which glows sweetly. Also featuring Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, Miller's Crossing) and a woefully underused Paul Rudd (The Shape of Things, Clueless). --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Unique plot, very well done movie.......2007-06-20
I thought this movie was great. Unique plot, well directed, and very well acted especially by the two main characters. Topher Grace is really a good actor- in this and "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton"- and cute too. I'm suprised he isn't getting more major roles- although he is in the new Spiderman movie. Some shirtless scenes in P.S.
Double bill.......2007-02-07
If you liked "Truly Madly Deeply" you'll probably like "P.S."
It's not as deliciously scabrous as the director's first, "Roger Dodger," but Laura Linney is delicious and this is a nice meditation on love, lost and gained.
A likeable romance, maybe better than 3 stars.......2007-01-29
Laura Linney, Topher Grace, Gabriel Byrne, and Marcia Gay Harden star in "p.s.", a romantic soap opera that starts slowly but gets you involved about a half-hour in with its intermingled storyline and satsifying two-dimensional characterizations by the lead characters.
Linney -- a great actress with a tendency to eschew glamour roles for more earthbound and realisitc portrayals -- is admissions director for an art program at Columbia University. She receives an application from Grace, who has the same name and appearance as an artist-boyfriend from her youth, a boyfriend she shared with best friend Hayden. Linney's ex-husband and still friend, Byrne, adds fuel to this volatile mixture when he admits he was a sex addict during their marriage and made love to hundreds of women "and men, too."
After Linney begins an affair with Grace -- her seeming boyfriend raised from the dead -- she has a great line after her admission of her ex's failures during their marriage. "He cheated on you?" Grace asks; "He probably bleeped you at some point," Linney responds...only she didn't say bleeped.
This movie is slow getting under way but interesting and fun in the final hour. Its pathos is genuine and reminiscent of the effect Linney created in her made-for-cable film "Wild Iris" which I think is her best work. I very much like that an actress of Linney's stature (an Academy award winner for her role in "Kinsey") will take on roles that are more deomcratic to audiences, who can in turn connect with her character and respond to even the most foolish elements of the storyboard.
Buy, rent or borrow this flick if you enjoy romance, soap opera, or otherwise like effective socialization in cinema. While nothing like this ever happened in my life this movie reminded me of a many of the feelings I had while an undergraduate; it might do the same for you.
Fate or Delusion?: A Film with Romance, and Intelligence Too.......2006-10-18
`P.S.' is a sweet tale of romance, but the initial setting of the story is as plausible as that of `Ghost.' Or less, maybe, for ghost may come to you, but no admissions officer working for university would do the same thing as Louise of this film, played by ever-reliable Laura Linney. But you MUST believe that part, and only then you will be attracted to the romantic relations depicted in this little charming film.
Laura Linney plays Louise, a divorced Columbia University School of Fine Arts admissions officer. In the opening chapter you will see the way her life is going on. It is routine, you can sense it in her conversation with her ex-husband (Gabriel Byrne). If you are not sure she is unfulfilled emotionally, it is obvious that Louise, reaching 40, does not look like a heroine of romance.
But all these things change when Louise happens to notice that one of the applicants' letters has the same name on it as her ex-boyfriend - it was 20 years ago -- and guess what she does next. Louise calls F. Scott (that's the name of the applicant), asks him to come over to her office at University, and arranges to interview him without telling anyone else about it.
F. Scott (Topher Grace) shows up, and their romance begins. (I don't write how, but you must see it for yourself). As you know, there are interesting aspects about their romance, like, which of them seizes the initiative of their relations, and Dylan Kidd tactfully suggests the power game played by them in such scenes as the one in which Louise teaches F. Scott how to tie his necktie. The story is told from the viewpoint of Louise, but it is easy to imagine how F. Scott, clearly uncomfortable at first, would feel before the admission officer who is coming onto him, displaying her cleavage in her office.
`P.S.' is clever in showing these details, and the supporting characters are also largely interesting (and very eccentric). Marcia Gay Harden nearly steals the show, but it is Laura Linney and Topher Grace who is the real star of the film, making it very endearing and likable..
Unfortunately, however, `P.S.' never makes us forget that the premise is too unorthodox, demanding too much from us. You may call it philosophical, metaphorical, or psychological, but one scene which happens earlier in the story is simply embarrassing not because its subject matter but because it is totally impossible in more than one way.
I liked the acting from the leads, and the May-December romance between them. Probably you will too, but that's after you pretend that you didn't see some part of the film.

Love it for the dancing.......2006-05-09
Alrighty so this isn't exactly the best movie when it comes to the story, but at certain points it is definately a tear jerker...I didn't like the relationship that the two girls had with eachother...I kept thinking to myself, why are they friends? It was just odd. And I also didn't like how the best-friend takes the prima dancer's spot and Larissa Olynik didn't have any ANGRY emotion...it was kind of unrealistic in that sense, but don't get me wrong...I don't think it's a bad movie...maybe because I am obsessed with any movie that has to do with dance (even Bring it on). The good things about this movie are the dance scenes...they're incredible so if you're into dance then I suggest watching it.
Great Book.. Great Music and Dancing.. .......2006-04-01
..But not the best movie I've ever seen. It can be a little depressing watching this wonderful.. perfect.. prima ballerina.. disappear.. dying of cancer. I LOVE the song that larissa's character dances to foe her Julliard audition. It is very inspirational.
Good for dancers only..........2005-11-07
This movie didn't develop the characters very well. The storyline was rather weak and you couldn't help but feel that the two main characters weren't as close as the writers wanted them to appear to be. As for the dance scenes...EXCELLENT! As a dancer and choreographer, I will buy this movie as a point of reference only. If you're into strong storylines and well developed characters, don't bother. But if you're looking for ideas artistically for dancing, it's a "must have."
Bad Movie--Read the books!.......2005-10-05
I saw the movie before I read the books so then I had an idea what it was about, but the movie was so different from the books. The books are so full of emotion and they really are alot better than the movie...I wouldn't watch the movies again but I'd definitely read the books. They are great books. I wish I had a relationship that Julie and Sammie have. Well, I hope this helped! :)
Read the books! Way better!
If you loved the book..........2005-09-22
...then please, do yourself a favor and stay far away from the movie. I will never understand why filmmakers obtain the rights to novels like "A Time For Dancing", only to create movies that deviate so far from the book that they shouldn't even be allowed to carry the same name. It is just tragic what was done to this beautiful story. So many things, big and small, were changed from the book, and in this case change is NOT good.
What made the novel so special was primarily the friendship between Julie and Samantha. They were more than best friends, they were a part of each other, and that came through the pages of the book so clearly that I was envious of what they had together. The movie turned their relationship into a sorry case of hero worship on Samantha's part, while Julie needed Sam only to tell her how wonderful she was - something the movie Sam accuses her of. In the book, the girls' friendship was strengthened by their shared passion for dancing, and both of them eloquently expressed what it meant to them. But here, Julie is the one with talent, while Samantha doesn't seem to care much but only dances because Julie does. They even reversed the girl's physical appearances by having Julie be a blond and Samantha a brunette.
The whole spirit of "A Time For Dancing" is destroyed in a cheesy, poorly written disease of the week type film that apparently went direct to video, and deservedly so. Please don't waste your time. Read the book (and it's sequel) by Davida Wills Hurwin instead.

--Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Sweet and beautiful movie about love.......2006-02-03
*****
I enjoyed this complex movie about a family, about family love. It is written from the perspective of a daughter, Evie, and is beautiful. Themes are adult and inappropriate for children; however, for mature adults, the material is rich, not offensive, and poignant. This movie is special because although it is written from Evie's perspectice, it is easy to understand her mother's (played by Amy Madigan) perspective, that of her sister, young boyfriend, and even husband.
It is rare to find a movie that is beautiful, without gratuitous elements to appeal to our popular culture (and thus sincere), telling and interesting and different story, yet one with which at some level we can all identify.
View this movie if you are looking for something thought-provoking, well-done, with spectacular acting and an intelligent plot. It is an anomaly today, so don't miss it!

WOW! This may be the worst movie I have ever seen!.......2006-01-12
Maybe the most perplexing thing in the world to me is how people are writing positive reviews of this film. The story line is horrendous and the acting is worse.
What was Christopher Lloyd thinking signing up to play along side these terrible actors. I mean the girl who plays the idiot savant may not even know what that is - they just picked the first actress who wanted the job and said "repeat what Lauren Ambrose says and try and act dim witted....and....ACTION" - she is really that bad.
Did the actors improvise this movie? I had to turn it off about halfway through the DVD and the only reason I made it that far was because I truly could not believe that it wasnt getting any better.
Think after school special but with no budget.
From top to bottom there isnt a single interesting thing about this movie...why does the dad spend 100% of his time in the basement working on trains? Man those scenes were tough to make it through.
I dont even write reviews of movies or products but this movie is such a special kind of bad that I felt compelled to get online and register for some movie reviews sites just to warn people.
Tomorrow morning I plan on getting up early - heck, I might even just head out now at 11pm and start rousing my neighbors out of bed and having them sign an agreement that they would never rent this "film".
The other day I was walking to the drugstore to get some cold medicine (feeling so sick I could barely leave the house) and on the way there I was jumped by three guys and beat to a bloody pulp and spent 2 weeks in the hospital on life support. That day now seems enjoyable compared to what I just went through watching half of this movie.
Please please please do not buy or see this movie.
I dont even think I can return this to Blockbuster for fear a friend or co-worker might see me do it...and what if when I return it someone else rents? I would keep the thing if it didnt mean that I would have to pay for it and that would mean buying it which would really put me over the edge.
If you watched every single episode of Small Wonder (the 80's sitcom with the robot girl Vicky) in reverse back-to-back with no commercials slowed down to 1/3 the normal speed it would be more enjoyable that this film.
Right now, as you read this, punch yourself in the face as hard as you can just for having searched for this movie and found this review. Now do it again.
How did you even make it to this page? You are not human.
Please go take a warm bath and scrub down and think about nothing for 4 hours.
If you own this DVD already, please go out and buy the most expensive shredder available - the ones that can cross shred a DVD - and shred this DVD before you take that bath.
I cant believe Amazon is making me give this movie 1 star.
If you have made the mistake of seeing this movie already please email me for support. I will drop everything I am doing and fly to your town to aid you in your recovery.
Thanks - keep the faith
Well done.......2005-12-15
We have a character named Evie. Evie just wants to be a good person. She's nice, friendly, smiles often, but is strangely brutally honest. Evie also has a secret. Her idiot-savant sister has been reciting original poetry, which is getting the community excited about the sister writing. Unfortunately, it's Evie's poetry. While their mother starts being happy again and the boy next door shows his interest in Evie, Evie just tries to figure out what she really wants to do.
What to keep in mind while watching this movie is who Evie really is. For such a brutally honest person who doesn't mind telling Ivy-league types that she doesn't respect them, it would seem odd that she would be able to pull off a lie. For someone so happy and cheerful, she's quite emotionless when it comes to certain issues. Those aren't character flaws, they're plot development, and they mean a lot more than they at first seem.
Mostly this is something of a melodrama: a character lies, the other characters' personalities propel them through drama as relationships are held at risk. But in terms of the writing it's very fresh and bold. The acting helps the writing along very well (maybe the idiot-savant sister could have been played better), and it is a real joy to watch.
The directing and the cinematography aren't quite as good. They're acceptable, and Evie's world is wreathed in color and light, which makes for some very beautiful images, but it's not very consistent. It's not really so much of a flaw as a result of a low production value, but within that same value is some genuine storytelling and a real care for the characters. So while it isn't a perfect movie, it's certainly an enjoyable one.

A poignant story.......2005-09-18
Admissions is a sweet movie with a serious tone. Ambrose is great (as always). Llyod who I usually like, is a little awkward in his role. Overall it's an interesting and enjoyable movie.
A Small Film with a Big Heart.......2005-09-07
"Admissions" is a complex story of a mother and 2 daughters, where the poem of a caged bird is a central theme, and applies to all 3, in different ways. The mother, Martha, is brilliantly played by Amy Madigan, a woman whose life has been damaged by the guilt of seeing her daughter Emily fall, causing brain damage. Emily, who is 20, is known as a savant; she can recite anything that is read to her, but cannot do anything to care for herself. Her younger sister Evie writes poetry, and allows everyone to think that Emily is the author. This deception brings about an emotionally catastrophic event, but in the close relationship between the 2 sisters, there is hope for healing.
The important message of this film is that though Emily may be mentally impaired, she is a receptacle for love, and a reflection of it; and in giving that love, Evie gains a depth and character she would perhaps not have had without her sister. Lauren Ambrose as Evie, and Taylor Roberts as Emily are both excellent. The 3 other main characters in the film are: James (Fran Kranz), who has known Evie since childhood, Harry, the mysterious father in the basement, played by John Savage with the right amount of quirkiness, and Christopher Lloyd as Mr. Worthy.
The script for "Admissions" is by Dawn O'Leary, based on her play, and is unpredictable, as well as interesting. Perhaps the biggest flaw in this film is the sound, which is terrible, and some of the dialogue is not as clear as it should be. Directed by Melissa Painter, this is a very low budget film that is deserving of an audience, especially for those interested in the plight of not only those who need help in society, but of those who give the care, and the love. Total running time is 84 minutes.
