5 out of 5 stars Grow a funny bone, why don't you?.......2007-06-12

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. All the actors/actresses play an integral part in this movie. I guess that some people can't think "outside the box". Not every movie has to make sense or have a solid plot to be good or funny. Sometimes stupid humor works, and this is one of those occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell !!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-29

I watched this movie on HBO so I had to add it to my collection. The unrated movie is even better. I give it two Thumbs up :)

The feverish spectacle of a summer camp for evangelical Christian kids is the focus of Jesus Camp, a fascinating if sometimes alarming documentary. (Shortly after its release, the movie gained a new notoriety when Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, who appears near the end of the film, resigned his post amid a male prostitute's allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct.) For most of the film, we follow a charismatic teacher, Becky Fischer, as she trains young soldiers in "God's Army" at a camp in North Dakota. Some of the kids emerge as likable and bright, and eager to continue their work as pint-sized preachers; elsewhere, the visions of children speaking in tongues and falling to the floor in ecstasy are more troubling. Even more arresting is the vision of a generation of children home-schooled to believe that the Bible is science, or Fischer's certainty that America's flawed system of democracy will someday be replaced by a theocracy. (In one scene, a cardboard cut-out of George W. Bush is presented to the children, who react by laying their hands on the figure as though in a religious procession.) Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady maintain neutrality about all this, maybe too much so (they throw in some interviews with radio host Mike Papantonio to provide a liberal-Christian viewpoint) and one would like to know more about the grown-ups presented here. Power broker Haggard is the creepiest person in the film, an insincere smooth talker whose advice to one of the young would-be campgoers comes across as entirely cynical. Time will tell whether the film's Christian soldiers will be marching onward. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Mind control.......2007-07-02

This movie is a must-see for every American.
I believe also that we who are not involved in "church" are going to be crushed between the millstones of the Holy Warriors that the Jesus Camp is producing and the Holy Warriors that the Taliban are producing.
Sadly,on opposite sides of the world,hate-filled adults are getting away with abusive brainwashing of pre-pre and pre-pubescent children who have no way to judge for themselves whether or not they accept what is being dictated to them."ABUSE" is the only way to describe what goes on in this camp. Not only is Haggerdy a creep, but there is some pervert-biker type with a voice that has filtered out lots of whiskey, meth, tobacco and pot,no doubt, who looks and scares these kids like The Devil himself who is leading the moppets on a pro-life demo on the steps of the US capitol. This film alternatively scary and funny.
The cut-out image of the dummy George Bush that was brought on stage for the children to fawn over produced alternative feelings of revulsion and hilarity in me. I almost saw this in a theater in Portland,OR and I wish I had, because that scene most assuredly would've brought down the house.
What is really bad, though,is the fact that these manaics have a good chance of by stealth, taking over even more than they have already.
God protect us from your followers!!!
I thank Jesus I don't live in Missouri.

5 out of 5 stars Pity the children.......2007-06-25

Jesus Camp is a riveting but bleak film.

Most eight year olds are not aware of, nor concerned with, government, politics, ideology or theology. That's not to say they're incapable of giving such issues their interest, nor that their development is likely to be impaired by encountering and thinking about them. As this film so clearly demonstrates, it's how you teach that makes the difference.

Jesus Camp has an obvious point of view that isn't sympathetic to the Evangelicals it portrays. Perhaps when the filmmakers began this project they didn't have any particular bias towards apocalyptic Biblical literalists. I don't really know, but I can image how neutrality could be easily subverted after meeting some of the people in this film and observing their lives and their "teaching" methods. It's difficult to feel any sympathy for people of any faith who as a result of ideological motivation see people as things, pawns in a supernatural game, rather than as individuals to be cared for and loved. It's even more difficult to deal with the enmity that arises on seeing parents and "teachers" using intense emotional appeals and peer pressure as methods of ideological indoctrination, creating in the minds of a children a world of "us" and "them," the kind of world that doesn't normally exist for children until after puberty.

Watch this film and despair the generation of lost children produced by this 21st century generation of know-nothing parents. I hope the filmmakers do a follow up in 10 or 20 years so that we can all see what becomes of these experiments in Evangelical indoctrination.

4 out of 5 stars Religious child abuse to the extreme.......2007-06-24

It was traumatic watching this documentary. I wished it wasn't fact, but sadly it is. There's no doubt that it's interesting and well made. But despite how sick the "camp counslers" are shown to be, there won't even be a ripple, because they emotionally abuse these poor children in the name of religion. And mark my word. This is sick extreme child abuse. I kept waiting for child protective services to pull up and rescue the kids from the control freak Christian adults, who can't stand it that 100 percent of the rest of the world doesn't think like them, so they prey on children, poisoning their unformed minds. If I believed in an abusive egomaniacal God, who expects complete submission or else, I would want millions and millions of other people to believe in the same God so I could justify my dsyfunctional relationship with him. I think the words of the great author Christopher Hitchens says it all: "Those who lie to the young in this way are wicked to the extreme". These selfish Christian liars take the cake.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Compassion.......2007-06-17

Sitting through this movie is appropriately uncomfortable and hard to watch. While it has been criticized as a highly prejudicial view of evangelical children's programs, it has actually created sympathy and empathy in our family.

Before this movie, my children had difficulty having anything but contempt for the christo-bullies in their school. (When Evangelicals decided to reincorporate their faith into public schools they forgot to instruct their children to be kind, gentle or even mannerly. Consequently, the biggest snobbiest, nastiest bullies in my children's schools are the "good" Christians who use their faith to belittle their fellow students.)

This movie helped my children to see those bullies as victims of emotional blackmail. My kids are far more understanding now that they have witnessed the highly emotional services in which children are manipulated into making commitments far beyond their emotional maturity and their intellectual reasoning skills.

My kids came away from the movie less angry and more compassionate.

4 out of 5 stars "A" for Entertainment Value, "F" for Objectivity.......2007-06-16

As an evangelical Christian whose own church and camp experiences couldn't be farther removed from those portrayed in this film, I would caution anyone who might be inclined to consider it an accurate snapshot of evangelical culture. It is absolutely not. The families and ministries featured are of a decidedly peculiar kind, prone to an almost primitive emotional frenzy and superstition, and their tactics with children and even their beliefs would come under heavy criticism from most of the mainstream evangelical community.

I was dismayed that the filmmakers purposely allowed the possibility to linger that the most colorful and warlike figurative language used by camp leaders in the film ("lay down your life for Jesus", etc.) had potentially violent or dangerous connotations. No effort was made to give the proper context of what was said, yet included in the bonus material was a scene in which Becky Fischer (a central subject in the film) says plainly that as Christians they categorically denounce violence as a tactic, and that their "weapons" are prayer and votes. I can only conclude that this balancing and sane bit of information didn't make the final cut because it diffused the anticipated sense of apprehension on the part of uninitiated viewers.

Add to that the cheap contrivance of having a radio talk show host provide inline running commentary, just in case the audience hasn't independently managed to arrive at the conclusion that a wave of right-wing religious crazies are on the verge of imposing a theocracy on unsuspecting secularists everywhere.

While I was disturbed by some of what I saw, the bottom line is this: we live in a free country. Churches are allowed to be big and influential. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean that they are "up to no good" when they practice their beliefs as they see fit and vote as they please. Nor do they have to answer to anyone for passing those beliefs on to their kids. Anyone who doesn't know an irreligious family who demands compliance from their children to their own naturalistically apocalyptic, left-wing doctrines doesn't get out much.

On the surface, David Cronenberg may seem an unlikely candidate to direct A History of Violence, but dig deeper and you'll see that he's the right man for the job. As an intellectual seeker of meaning and an avowed believer in Darwinian survival of the fittest, Cronenberg knows that the story of mild-mannered small-town diner proprietor Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is in fact a multilayered examination of inbred human behavior, beginning when Tom's skillful killing of two would-be robbers draws unwanted attention to his idyllic family life in rural Indiana. He's got a loving wife (Maria Bello) and young daughter (Heidi Hayes) who are about to learn things about Tom they hadn't suspected, and a teenage son (Ashton Holmes) who has inherited his father's most prominent survival trait, manifesting itself in ways he never expected. By the time Tom has come into contact with a scarred villain (Ed Harris) and connections that lead him to a half-crazy kingpin (William Hurt, in a spectacular cameo), Cronenberg has plumbed the dark depths of human nature so skillfully that A History of Violence stands well above the graphic novel that inspired it (indeed, Cronenberg was unaware of the source material behind Josh Olson's chilling adaptation). With hard-hitting violence that's as sudden as it is graphically authentic, this is A History of Violence that's worthy of serious study and widespread acclaim. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
On a single disc and with little fanfare, this DVD makes an excellent case for the best extras of the year. Dive into the one-hour-long documentary and learn more about moviemaking than on many a double-disc. The secret lies in director David Cronenberg's (and his usual crew) folksy casualness in showing off the craft, be it makeup (green screens were used), directing (Cronenberg doesn't storyboard), or art direction (the diner set). It also is very funny to hear about "fish Fridays" and how Maria Bello's Uncle Pete became an influence. Even the infamous sex-on-the-staircase scene is diagnosed with candor as stars Viggo Mortensen and Bello act as if there is no backstage camera. There's only one deleted scene, but it's uncommonly deconstructed on why it was filmed and why it was cut (it's a very Cronenbergian dream sequence). A short bit on Cannes is also a delight. So much is here that Cronenberg's smart commentary track is nearly superfluous. Isn't that a nice surprise? --Doug Thomas

2 out of 5 stars BORING.......2007-07-04

This movie was so dull and dry!!! It was boring from start to finish. With the exception of the sex scenes between Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello!!, and the fight scenes with the son and that stupid jock!!! Either than that it was corny as hell!!!

5 out of 5 stars A History of Violence (David Cronenberg).......2007-06-28

David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence" has become of my favorite movies of the decade so far. The sex scene between Mario Bello and Viggo Mortensen on the staircase has all but become legendary. Just watching it makes my back hurt. That must have been so uncomfortable but still sexy. The great thing about having this DVD is that you can watch the scene over and over.

The story is very simple but really effective. A man hiding his identity is found out by the thugs he is hiding from, just because of an act of bravery which got him on TV. They come and try to destroy his new life. Really not bad. I don't know why so many people don't like this movie.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORY OF A GREAT MOVIE.......2007-06-23

I loved this movie, i found it riviting. Im not a huge fan of Mortensen but i thought he was fantastic in this, the whole movie spins off of his great performance. I also loved William Hurts performance, he went totally against type, I laughed so hard. My friend recommended this, and i could not look away, i was revited by this movie, from start to finish. Great film, I highly recommend it, and im picky as hells...whom ever game this review an unhelpful is an idiot straight up.

4 out of 5 stars golden violence.......2007-06-04

When you hear the title "History of Violence" you probably think of some kind of documentary focusing on history between people from all over the world. Well, it's not that. This is just a movie that focuses on one family where the wife, husband, son and daughter seem to disagree with each other on many occasions, and in fact, it stretches beyond the family. Some of the scenes were truly unbelievable in a graphic kind of way, such as a certain something that happens on the stairs of the home. The violence actually kicks in pretty heavily towards the end, but without spoiling anything, I'll just leave it at that. It's not a classic film, but it's dark and quiet tone makes it worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars A morality tale worth seeing.......2007-05-29

David Cronenberg is not the first person I think of for an action film. But then, despite the movie's name, this isn't an action film. It's parable about all kinds of violence: violence between parent and child, between children, between husband and wife, between brothers, and of course, good old-fashioned violence against people who disagree with you.

The Stalls are a perfect family. There's hot lawyer wife Edie (Maria Bello), soft-spoken Tom (Viggo Mortensen), and their children: wisecracking teenage Jack (Ashton Holmes) and cute-as-a-button Sarah (Heidi Hayes). Into this perfect family portrait enters violence in the form of bullies at school and thugs who attempt to rob Tom's diner.

It turns out that Tom has an ugly past he's been trying to keep secret. But when Tom violently repels the robbers and becomes a minor celebrity, his past comes back in force.
Carl Fogarty (a snarling Ed Harris), a mobster who wants Tom to "go for a drive," shows up at Tom's doorstep, threatening his friends and family. Things spiral downward from there.

Tom's struggle isn't just about his criminal past. Cronenberg unspools on screen a litmus test of violent scenarios, and then asks the audience each time: Is this okay? The questions start out easy to answer and become increasingly complex. By the time Tom grabs his wife in a violent embrace that turns passionate, we suddenly understand that each person defines their own boundary of when violence is and isn't acceptable. And the morality attached to each act of violence is a fluid thing indeed.

All the actors pull their weight in History of Violence, except perhaps Hayes--she's no Dakota Fanning, but she acts suitably cute (a little too cute). Everyone else is excellent, from Bello's desperate, hurt looks to Holmes terrified/thrilled rage, to the inimitable Harris as a very scary man. And of course there's Mortensen, who infuses every character with a level of depth with a sad glance.

By the time Richie Cusack (William Hurt) appears, the violence at home has come full circle. I'm not particular fond of Hurt, but he does an excellent, frightening job here, as a mobster completely bereft of any moral compass.

This movie poses important questions that challenge American assumptions about violence, similar to how American History X challenged our assumptions about racism. It's in answering those questions that the movie becomes more than action film and transforms into a morality tale worth seeing.

The first two movies were great I loved the Mighty Duck movies but the third move was some old 50's movie when I played it I had to get another one and I had the same problem. I sent the movies back but have yet to get my money back.

1 out of 5 stars No More Monkeys.......2007-06-23

I have seen and loved all three of these movies, so I didn't scroll down to read the reviews. I should have. First movie was great, second movie was great, the 3rd movie was packaged D3, the disc was labeled D3, but the movie was.....Monkeys Go Home. Sent it back for a replacement and the 3rd movie was again "Monkeys Go Home". So Monkeys go back.

1 out of 5 stars Wish I would have read C Leonard's Review.......2007-06-07

If I would have read C. Leonard's review, I would have known to pass on this
series. Monkeys Go Home ruined this for me too. I gave it as a gift and was
amazed to receive a call telling me that Monkeys Go Home was in the Mighty
Ducks 3 movie case. Well, must be an accident, right?!? I sent the first set back and just received the replacement complete with the Monkeys Go Home movie in the third case!!!!

Save your money folks....this is not the place to buy a boxed set of Mighty

I don't know what Disney's problem is, "Monkeys, Go Home" isn't part of the series, everyone should know that; so why did I get that movie in this set instead of D3? Are they idiots?? Or are they just trying to peddle their old crappy movies disguised as their good ones? and; IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO BURN THE RIGHT MOVIE ON THE DVD?! It's a 5 Star set, but I rate it at 1 star because they were idiotic enough to burn the WRONG MOVIE ON MY DISC 3! WAKE UP DISNEY, AND THANKS FOR RUINING MY WEEKEND!

Replacement arrived today, same problem!

3 out of 5 stars Great Movies, Great Price!.......2007-03-25

I purchased this DVD boxset in November and just now got around to watching them. I have been a long time fan of The Mighty Ducks movies and used to watch them all the time on TV and on VHS. I was happy they were on DVD for me to purchase. They came at a great price too...I believe I paid $20.99. That is awesome considering each movie retails at $10 to $14 each. As for the films themselves, all 3 are presented in their original aspect radio, 1.85:1 widescreen. I only gave this collection 3 stars as I am not a huge fan of D3: The Mighty Ducks. In my opinion, it's a sequel that never should've been made. It lacks the same magical formula that made the first 2 films so great. The movie feels rushed and it seems to push Joshua Jackson too much into the spotlight. He was never the lead star, Emilio Estevez was always the true star in my eyes. I recommend this boxset if you're a fan of the movies.

The 1993 film adaptation of Amy Tan's bestselling novel is both a delight and a moving experience, an anthology of stories wrapped in one Chinese-American woman's journey to understand her roots. Wayne Wang (Eat a Bowl of Tea) directs a large, outstanding cast spread over eight different tales of the lives of Chinese women, most of them set in the past. The script by Tan and Ronald Bass (Rain Man) is a delicate balance of emotions that swell but don't gush, and Wang brings impressive texture and a personal feel to Tan's descriptions of daily life in the Chinese-American community. This sprawling, good-looking movie makes for a cathartic tearjerker one can feel good about. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One of the best stories ever............2007-06-28

This is a great story to share with you daughter. I have 2 daughters and will show them this DVD. I watched it with my mother and we cried. The women in this story are so real and every woman can relate to at least one of them. A must see--DVD, a must read book.

4 out of 5 stars Chick flick.......2007-05-29

Definite chick flick. One of the first really long films I fell in love with. Get's a good cry from me. I definitely feel like I can connect to the characters in this film. Many of them are really nicely developed. You can really feel the struggles of many of the daughters and the expectations the family has for them.

5 out of 5 stars Great representation of the book.......2007-05-25

"The Joy Luck Club" is one of my favorite books, so I wasn't sure how I would like the movie. But, I was surprised to find that it is a great depiction of the book - very accurate, minus a few minor things here and there. I highly recommend this movie, whether you have read the book or not.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and heartwrenching................2007-05-16

I saw this film, based on the novel of the same name (written by Amy Tan), several years after it was released in the movie theaters. It was a suggested film for a Sociology in the Media course, and I can definitely see why it was reccomended. It's a tearjerker and was beautifully adapted for the screen. Director Wayne Wang brings the harrowing stories of eight Chinese and Chinese-American women, spanning two generations, together as an epic tale of the turbulence and pain of immigration and assimilation. The cast includes the wonderful Ming Na (as one of the daughters).

This story really takes an honest look at the struggle and sacrifice that immigrants must make, in the face of all odds, to survive and adapt to a new culture, language and set of social expectations. All the while, in the case of these strong women, they hold strong to their culture through weekly games of mah jong, where they gather together to gossip, give advice and commiserate. This is a great film, and has been called a "chic flick," but I really don't believe that that stereotypical term is fitting of THE JOY LUCK CLUB at all. It is truly a film for all people. All people age seventeen and over, that is. There is a reason that this was rated R. There is intensely graphic and disturbing imagery here, as well as thematic elements that are too much for small children or young teens.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully insightful look at Mother-Daughter relationships.......2007-04-05

This film involves you from the start. It is the story of four Chinese families that centers on the Mothers and Daughters in each unit. It reminds you that you come from somewhere and the influences of culture and family and situations makes each of us who we are. It also speaks volumes to the fact that Mothers are human beings, and definitely worth getting to know better.

The acting is very good. Since Amy Tan was involved in creating the screenplay, much of the dialogue and narrative come straight from her book - which is wonderful! Where are the people that talk like that? This is a colorful tale that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Kept us laughing through the Blizzard.......2007-01-10

Loved this DVD Pack!! We were one of those who were caught in the Colorado Blizzard, fortunately we had brought this DVD along with a Jeff Dunham DVD (absolutely hysterical)! These two kept us entertained and laughing the whole time!! Even when we weren't actually watching them, we found ourselves mimicking them and continually laughing! Sure brightened up our potentially disastrous trip! I highly recommed this DVD :)

4 out of 5 stars Some of the funniest comedy I've seen in ages.......2006-12-20

I originally bought the first DVD because I had heard some Jeff Foxworthy standup on an internet radio station. I had not seen him or the other three comedians in these films before. I enjoyed the first DVD so much that I bought the boxed set of all three films.

All four comedians are different from one another. Refreshingly, none of them resort to foul language or overt crudity in these films (although there is innuendo and some talk about sex).

My girlfriend and I both agree that Bill Engvall is consistently our favourite comedian out of the four. Jeff Foxworthy is also very funny. Ron White and Larry I'm not quite so keen on, but they certainly have their moments. The final segments in each film with the four of them together are very funny - especially the one where they are showing photographs of each other in their younger years.

Of the three films in this pack, one has fullscreen and widescreen version while the other two are fullscreen-only. All three films were originally filmed in widescreen, so it's a shame that this boxed set doesn't include the widescreen versions of the other two films.

Fans of Laguna Beach will love the first season of The Hills, which follows Laguna's Lauren Conrad as she attends fashion school in Los Angeles and works as an intern at Teen Vogue magazine. OK, so that's the premise for this quasi-reality MTV series. But in reality, the show is an excuse to watch pretty young people make out, break up, get back together, and break up some more. The show has more in common with a daytime drama than a documentary; none of the subjects worries too much about paying rent for their glamorous apartments or designer clothes. But when it comes to dating, the Geneva Convention could learn a thing or two about negotiating from these gals. Lauren fans may be dismayed to learn that Jason, the monosyllabic Lothario who cheated on her in the second season of Laguna Beach is back. And instead of going on dates with the thousands of young men who would love to have a pretty blonde on their arms (and get the opportunity to appear on TV to boot!), Lauren allows Jason to get back into her good graces--even though he hasn't matured since high school. Or figured out how to treat a woman. Or learned how to talk better. It's actually heartbreaking watching her struggle with a relationship that we can all see is doomed. Or is it?

The season finale ends with the kind of dilemma we all wish we could've faced when we were 19 or 20: spend the summer working in Paris or move into a beach house with your boyfriend and frolic on the beach for three months. Paris? Jason? Hmmmm. You'd think that'd be a no-brainer. Also on hand to offer support are Lauren's friends Heidi and Audrina. The cast always looks chic and freshly made up (even after getting out of bed) and the cameras somehow always manage to be in the right place to capture romantic moments (and drama). It's easy to make fun of this show because of the preposterous setup that this sun-kissed life is reality for a group of kids who don't seem to have to work that hard for their privileged lives. But therein lies the guilty pleasure. We know it's a fantasy created by MTV. And while we would kill for the rocking apartments, cars, and clothes, there is no way most of us would endure being publicly humiliated to get 15 minutes of fame. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Description

Follow Lauren to LA as she attempts to balance a demanding internship at Teen Vogue and a full course load with a demanding nightlife and a full social calendar. But at least she won't have to do it alone. Along the way she meets several friends who expose her to a different part of the city, each chasing their own dreams. The Hills tells the story of four young women on their own for the first time and the fun, laughter and drama that they all share.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of glamour and escapism........2007-06-26

The Hills follows Laguna Beach reality star Lauren Conrad on her move to Los Angeles a year after graduating high school in Orange County. She moves into a fabulous apartment with her fairly new best friend Heidi (who is actually a girl she met only a year or so ago during her first post high school move to San Francisco and who is seen briefly on the second season of Laguna Beach). Lauren is enrolled in college where she is studying fashion and lands a nice internship with Teen Vogue in LA as well. She unexpectedly reconciles with her Laguna Beach ex-boyfriend Jason and the show follows her life balancing work, school, friendships, and love in LA. Lauren is faced with a huge "career or love" decision in the last episode. Her decision leads us into season two.

The pluses of the show are that Lauren seems to have a good head on her shoulders and to be devoted to her studies and to her career unlike her party girl room mate Heidi. Lauren can be seen as a good role model for college students everywhere. Life in LA is shown as so glamorous and everyone always looks fabulous of course. This is part of the show's appeal: escapism.

The minuses of the show are that we never see Lauren or Heidi struggling to pay the apartment rent, car payment, or any bills at all really...things that a lot of college students in America everywhere have to worry about. I know that my friends and I certainly did anyway. A lot of people will find this type of "reality show" to be unrealistic. Who knows if it is really scripted or staged or what? But whatever it is, it's still a nice bit of escapism and glamour for girls everywhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-04-06

I bought this set for my daughter, but I think I like it as much as she does.

5 out of 5 stars The best reality tv show ever!.......2007-03-11

I'm a total addict of The Hills. If you do not have the first season, go and buy it quick. I'm a huge fan of The O.C. and One Tree Hill, but this one beats them all. I give it 10 stars. I'm a huge fan of Lauren Conrad and I'm so happy they decided to follow her after Laguna Beach. Everything that goes on in this show is so true and I can totally relate to some of the girls in this show.

    5 out of 5 stars i.e.the.hills........2007-02-26

I'm actually over the age to be using this form but I'm too lazy to make an account so yeah..

Wow, The Hills is like my favorite show ever! I love all the drama and everything that goes on, which sounds pretty bad, but I just enjoy watching it.

Omg, Jason is sooo hot! I think that he and Lauren made a really good couple, but I understand why they broke up.

I also think that Lauren is going to make it very far in her life because she has a good work ethic. Man, I wish I had an internship at Teen Vouge! She is so lucky. She's my favorite character on the show. You would think that someone as rich and lucky and beautiful as her would be really stuck-up, but she doesn't seem like she's like that at all.

Well, if you're still reading this boring thing, BUY THE HILLS!

5 out of 5 stars Head For The Hills.......2007-01-28

Wow! This show is very very diffrent to Laguna Beach but it is still wonderful. It is a must have for any Lauren Conrad fan's out there. You Know L.C from Laguna, well its time to meet Lauren she is all grown up and headed for the Hills. In this reality TV spin-off series of Laguna Beach. New friends, New City, New Girl. Laurens not in Laguna anymore she is in hollywood. Watch Lauren grow as she gets her dream internship at Teen Vouge Magizine. Lauren makes new friends Audrina, and Whitney (other intern) and most Laguna Fan's may remember Hedi from the few episodes she was on in Laguna Beach season 2 (including the fashion show episode) Yep thas right the episode when Jason cheated on Lauren with Jessica. And yes you got it Jason is back, and he has one thing on his mind LAUREN. If you thought Laguna had drama who havent seen anything yet. Get Set for on bumpy ride in The Hills. Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest. Bubba Ho-Tep is partially about Elvis Presley and partially about the title character, an Egyptian cowboy zombie, but mostly it is about camp. The movie is equal parts story and back story. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn't really die, ending up instead in a rest home in East Texas with JFK (played by Ossie Davis), who was dyed black and had his brain removed, presumably for reasons of national security. Campbell and Davis realize that something strange is going on when their rest-home compatriots start dropping off suspiciously. The whole movie leads up to a final showdown to the death with the Egyptian cowboy zombie who has been sucking the souls of their fellow residents because he thought no one would notice. The movie unfolds a bit slowly; it is, after all, a geriatrics-fight-Egyptian-cowboy-zombie movie. However, one wishes this self-conscious movie's pacing took its cue from the atypically fast-moving zombie instead of from the senior-citizen Elvis and JFK. In the end, though, Campbell is flawless as the aged King; his accent, intonations, glasses, and trademark karate are at the same time sincere and over the top. --Brian Saltzman

    Description

Mud Creek, Texas, is about to get all shook up. When mysterious deaths plague the Shady Rest retirement home, it's up to an aging, cantankerous "Elvis" (Bruce Campbell) and a decrepitand black"JFK" (Ossie Davis) to defeat a 3,000-year-old-Egyptian mummy with a penchant for sucking human souls! Can the King show the world that he can still take care of business?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A C T I O N .......2007-06-15

Terrific, weird, campy, and funny in an offbeat way kind of movie. Definitely a late night classic. "Big check on that, baby!"

5 out of 5 stars All glory is fleeting.......2007-06-03

Bruce Campbell in a sensitive and serious movie? I think we had better believe it! I just think that Campbell wants to show that the real horror is not some supernatural mummy, it is the very real horror of growing old and infirm. He just chooses to show it in the Bruce Campbell way!
Maybe one reason that I find Campbell's performance so touching is that the subject is so very personal to Campbell himself: he knows how fickle fame and glory really are, since he himself is a culthero for some, and totally unknown to most.
A weak mummy preys on the old and forgotten in a retirement home. An old an infirm Elvis Presley joins up with an even older and infirmer JFK to end its reign of terror. But it seems like the relatives and staff welcome its killings, since it gets rid of old coots, and frees up beds, and frees relatives of their responsibility.
The film is very funny, I think, and the story is good. Bruce Campbell really gives a quite deep and sensitive portrait of an aging Elvis, or Elvis impersonator, trying to restore his lost dignity.
However, maybe the final joke is at the audiences expense; I just can't get rid of the feeling that the film is really about two deluded old men hallucinating it all, escaping into a fantasy world before finally dying.

    5 out of 5 stars Bruce's Geriatric Joy Ride.......2007-05-13

I'm sure my total devotion to a well-made Bruce Campbell vehicle is pretty obvious from the gushing review I'm about to write, but seriously... the guy's ENTERTAINING, and he obviously had a blast(minus all the make-up) personifying a not-so-dead King o' Rock n' Roll. Although the low budget probably scared away several potential movie-goers, it is clear from the first ten minutes that a film like this couldn't have been made with any degree of plausibility if the effects were to par with popcorn blockbusters, quite the opposite in fact: armies of computer-generated creepy-crawlies would only detract from the believability of the somewhat convoluted plot. Thus, all the action revolves around, and depends completely upon, the personifications of Elvis and JFK so lovingly crafted by Campbell and the late Ossie Davis (respectively). The way Campbell returns humanity to the image of a cult icon tarnished by his falsified demise admittedly feels closer to parody than homage, but is certainly and undeniably touching. The subtle emotional reactions he brings to parts such as a scene near the start of the film in which the daughter of a resident at the rest home throws away her father's prized Purple Heart are the moments you'll leave the film remembering, not his jaunty and bizarre tries to imitate the King's legendary gyrating hips or his flagrant displeasure at not being able to "get it up". That said, the movie also does a great job of using the mummy's powers as a metaphor for the manner in which the souls of patients frequently stagnate and then slowly degenerate in rest homes. IT should be viewed less as a straightforward hybrid of comedy and horror and more of an introspective look at the life of every senile old man who never got the chance to tell us of his marvelous adventures because we simply couldn't be bothered to listen. Love it or hate it, this movie makes a statement.

5 out of 5 stars Long live the King.......2007-05-07

5 stars, because it succeeds in virtually every aspect without massive special effects and extravagant locale.
Brilliant Elvis impersonation by Bruce Campbell, wonderful but sad representation of old people in a care facility.
The storyline is very clever and witty and the acting throughout good, humorous, unselfconscious and believable.
This is one movie that can be enjoyed often. The almost-plausible scenario, the simplicity, the acting and the humour make this one of my favourites.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie.......2007-03-27

I netflixed this movie initally to watch it and it was awesome. I absolutely loved every minute of the film. The acting was superb. The story great and original. It was dramatic, funny, scary...all rolled into one fine package of a film. I strongly recommend this film to every film lover and Elvis fan. I mean even the name itself, "Bubba Ho-Tep" is so inviting. What more could you ask for from a film.

Valley Girl is, like--Omigod!--one of the most "tubular" teen comedies of the early 1980s. This movie launched Nicolas Cage's career, and it's easy to see why: Following his tiny role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cage is perfectly cast as a Hollywood punk who instantly falls for Julie (the irresistible Deborah Foreman), a San Fernando "Valley Girl"--a brighter variant of the stereotype immortalized in Moon Unit Zappa's 1982 novelty song--who must choose between wild-boy Nic and her preening jock boyfriend (Mark Bowen). Fortunately, Julie knows what's right for her (even if her "Val" friends don't), and in refreshing defiance of teen-flick tradition, her post-hippie parents (Frederic Forrest, Colleen Camp) are supportively cool. With sincere humor, a lively soundtrack of '80s hits, and a time-capsule cruise of Hollywood landmarks, Valley Girl is both timeless and nostalgic, owing much of its lasting appeal to Martha Coolidge's sensitive direction. Fer sure, y'know, it definitely won't gag you with a spoon. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Julie's cool, Randy's hot. She's from the Valley, he's like'so not! Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman star in this "sweet, fast, unpretentious [and] funny" (Los Angeles Times) romance that mixes preppies, punkers and a "hit-filled soundtrack" (The New York Times)including The Plimsouls and Modern Englishinto an iconic cult film that's "entertaining" (New York)'to the max! Julie is, like, so over her preppy boyfriend, she dumps him on the escalator at the Galleria. And when she meets punker Randy, her eyes practically bug out because she thinks he's sexy even though he makes her friends gag! But even if Randy's ready to stop the world and melt with her, can Julie risk her losing her friends and her super-popularity at school just to be with him?

4 out of 5 stars Light and fluffy.......2007-03-07

(3.5/5 stars) It is amazing how many of the words and phrases from this film have become a normalized part of the vernacular. "Awesome" is one obvious example, and it is difficult to imagine teenagers today conversing without the use of "Like," where it is not used to connote "similarity." At the time of its release, these were rather novel. This film does have a good soundtrack and it is a pretty decent love story of a popular, middle class girl, who falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. In the title role, Deborah Foreman is quite irresistible. Nicolas Cage is fine as the rough-hewn Randy, though he is never very believable as the favorite son of his tough neighborhood. It is embarrassing to the point of laughter as he interacts with his homeboys during a cruise through his neighborhood. Another aspect that does not ring true is some of the dialogue. A prime example of this is the conversation among Randy, Julie, Tommy and Stacie at the club in Hollywood, where they sit down and immediately begin discussing their statuses and degrees of authenticity. Not only is it not convincing in its content, the transition to it is non-existent. Gripes aside, this is not a bad film. However, I would not go so far as to say it is great either. As a comedy, it isn't very funny. As a romance, their love seems to be based on physical attributes rather than commonalities and, as such, not very compelling. Nonetheless, Elizabeth Daily is always a delight, and her role here makes this a must for fans. Also, the DVD transfer, 5.1 channel mix effort both widescreen and full screen versions are worth an extra ½ star.

The Popular `80s teen film "Valley Girl" based on Frank Zappa's Novelty Song of the same title, popularized the image of the "Valley girl". A Valley Girl usually referred to girls from The San Fernando Valley in California. This type of girl usually dressed in preppy colorful clothes, had their own slang terms, cared about their social status, and usually had money. In 1983 Valley Girl, the movie was released, and became a cult status film, depicting the Valley Girl lifestyle. The movie stars Deborah Foreman, as Julie Richman, a popular, preppy girl from the San Fernando Valley, and Nicolas Cage as Randy, a young punk from Hollywood. After dumping her preppy, good-looking boyfriend, Julie attends one of her friends parties and ends up meeting Randy, even though they are from 2 different worlds, these two show that opposites do attract and instantly become an item. Even though her parents are cool with their relationship, her friends aren't, and pressure Julie into dumping him, so she can get back with her Ex. This film is not only great, but has an incredible soundtrack, with so many great New Wave hits. Watch for musical appearances by The Plimsouls, and Josie Cotton in this film as well. For those of you who were around when this film came out will probably view it with nostalgia, as for those of us who weren't will love looking at the awesome fads, trends, and listening to the great music. Overall this film is like totally trepindicular, fer Sure!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 80's youth movie!.......2007-02-05

It really seems to be a trend to look back on past decades and ridicule just about everything that has "come before". It makes me laugh that people are so smug to think that the "present" is perfect. Well, I have news for you. The present is far from perfect and there's a whole lot about the past that was MUCH better than it is today. The movie "Valley Girl" is a wonderful example of how COOL the early 80's were!

I won't offer a review of the film itself, because that's already been done by much better reviewers than myself. I will simply say that this is a great youth movie from a very positive time in America. It's always great to be young... but it was TOTALLY AWESOME to be young in the early 80's!

The DVD features a great transfer with a few nifty "extras" (80's trivia track and audio commentary by director Martha Coolidge). As noted by a few other reviewers, a few of the songs have been removed from the film (and this is not noted anywhere on the DVD package). Also, for some reason the sound was remixed and some of the music has been placed in the "background" when it was originally quite loud and "up front". Since the music is such an integral part of this film it's a shame that it has been altered in any way.

    Remember:

If you should ever find yourself making fun of 80's fashions or haircuts just put Valley Girl in your DVD player so that you can be reminded of how FUN and COOL that time really was. Those who truly understand what the 80's were all about make no apologies and have no regrets. The 80's were a TOTAL blast, and Valley Girl is a wonderful testament to that fact!
