Editorial Review:
Description
A re-release of the J. Arthur Rank historical classic made in 1954. This cinema drama follows the life of Wesley from when he was saved out of a burning house as a child and thereby marked for life as a `brand from the burning'. His Oxford days, a disastrous mission to America, his decisive Aldersgate experience, his bringing the Gospel into the daily lives of alienated masses, the founding of Methodism, and his astounding role in raising the moral and religious climate in 18th century England, and much more are set forth with careful dependence on the historical sources.

John Wesley was one of the most influential ministers in all of Christian history, and this old but still potent film provides an excellent introduction to the major events in his life and the many obstacles he had to overcome.

More medical drama and firefighting adventures await the Emergency! fan in this multi-disc set, which compiles all 22 episodes of the action series' 1973-74 season. Story-wise, there's not much change at either Rescue Squad 51's headquarters, which housed Roy DeSoto (Randolph Mantooth) and John Gage (Kevin Tighe), or at Rampart Hospital (home to doctors Robert Fuller and Bobby Troup and head nurse Julie London), though Roy must decide whether to become an engineer or stay with the paramedics in "The Promotion" (Episode 7), and Troup's Dr. Joe Early discovers he has a heart condition in "The Hard Hours" (Episode 19). But story arcs and character change wasn't the fuel that drove Emergency!; it was the rescues, and naturally, there are plenty to be found here, from a motorcycle gang war (season opener "Frequency"), a rocker in a diabetic coma (Episode 4, "An English Visitor") and a singer who suffers a heart attack (Episode 12, "Body Language") to a footballer (Dick Butkus) who is tackled too roughly by his own son ("The Hard Hours") and a magician who locks himself in a safe (Episode 14, "Computer Error"). Guest stars rescued and treated by the regulars this season include a youthful Nick Nolte, Mariette Hartley, Happy Days' Donny Most, and '60s heartthrob Bobby Sherman. Unfortunately, as with previous Emergency! DVD releases, there are no extras, though the episodes are spread across five single-sided discs rather than on double-sided discs. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Another Rescue From Station 51.......2007-07-05

This program continues to be entertaining and educational in its 3rd season. Gage and DeSoto and the rest of the firemen at Station 51 provide drama, and suspense, with some humor threaded in for our enjoyment. I would recommend this season along with the first and second seasons without any hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars EMERGENCY!.......2007-06-27

Saturday nights in the early to mid 1970s was appointment television for me.8:00 p.m.Gage and Desoto. Emergency! Season 3 was an excellent season. The new firetruck debuts in episode 2. The best episode is the one where Gage gets bitten by a rattlesnake attending to victims hurt in an accident where a car goes down an embankment and has to be transported to Rampart on top of engine 51.Another great episode has Bobby Sherman as a young doctor who initially does not think too highly of paramedics until he spends a shift working with Gage and Desoto.Another highlight of Emergency is the joking around among the firemen and hospital staff.Remember the episode where Johnny tries to straighten out an error on his credit card bill. Does Gloria Truelove ring a bell to Emergency! fans? How about when Johnny and Roy buy the 1932 firetruck and Dixie asks them if they knew where she could pick up an old hospital cheap. The only way we Emergency! fans can ever see the show again is to buy the dvd so if you can only afford 1 season of the 3 that are available I would recommend season 3.

4 out of 5 stars Still a good buy for fans!!!.......2007-06-26

If you are a fan of the original Emergency! series, or a new comer that enjoyed Seasons 1 & 2 then don't hesitate to buy Season 3.

I agree with the other criticism (i.e wrong opening theme, no scene info/index, etc), and it does seem clear that Universal did not put near as much effort into this release as they did the first two seasons. But, these cutbacks are just a slight annoyance (-1 star).

If anything, I think I found season 3 more enjoyable to watch just because of the development of the characters and somewhat better acting and directing from the first two seasons. Hopefully, Universal will step back up to the plate and make season 4's release with better polish...but I doubt it...nevertheless, I'll still pre-order it when its available!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to the roots of professional EMS.......2007-06-10

Great!Waited for that for years! Forget the totally overpriced videos
for 200 bucks and more.

But please: Show the boot to the country code and make them region code free !!!!
I think you would sell a lot more of them in Europe, it's cult for any
longtime EMS participant !!!!!
Saying more about Emergency would be a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Season 3.......2007-06-02

I loved it! I was dying to see this season after watching the first two and it was worth the wait. Now I can't wait for season 4 to come out. The memories this brings back, the best one of which is thinking how I used to sit with my Grandmother and watch each episode. She was such a big part of my life and I miss her so much. Watching these episodes now on DVD helps me to relive those times and to remember her in such a loving way. Thank you Universal and let's get the rest of the episodes out sooner!!

A mixed bag that received mixed reviews when released in 1994, this lavish film works overtime to honor the spirit and style of the vintage pulp novels and radio shows that made The Shadow a household name in the 1930s and '40s. Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability "to cloud men's minds." A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still, The Shadow is true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Remade as Batman Begins........2007-06-26

THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST SUPER HERO MOVIES EVER MADE. Even Remo Williams was better. At least Remo Williams had some humor and heart.

BATMAN BEGINS SEEMS LIKE RIP OFF OF THIS MOVIE, BUT SO MUCH BETTER. If you have seen Batman Begins, you have seen this movie. A guy living in the underworld in some Asian mountains find the light with a guru. He returns to the big city as a rich playboy and fights crime. He ends up fighting those who trained under the same guru. Although The Shadow did it first, and Batman Begins is a copycat, Batman Returns is a much better movie.

I really like Alec Baldwin, but in this movie, he is a cardboard character. How he turns from bad to good is never shown, it just happens. He really doesn't show any emotion during the whole movie. He is a lot like the character he makes fun of in 30 Rock.

Not much is done with the concept of The Shadow. There is one short episode near the beginning of the movie tha shows what The Swhadow is all about, but it isn't very thrilling or interesting. He just captures some criminals on a bridge, but there is no background to draw you into the story.

After that, it is more a supernatural story, and not much to do with The Shadow. A much better movie would have been to explore more about The Shadow, just like Batman Begins gives you a rich story about Batman, who he was and how he fought crime. But, it also gives you a backgrind story about the criminals he fights so there is tension.

The love story in this movie is also very weak.

This movie was killed by critics and was a bomb at the box office. But, sometimes the critics can be wrong and the movie fans might miss a winner. You can decide if you want to take the chance.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of surprises.......2007-05-13

This movie has fast paced action, good acting with a touch of the exotic. Based on an radio series. I liked it!

5 out of 5 stars Brought back my childhood radio daze . . ........2007-04-25

I really liked this movie. I saw it in the theater and several times on DVD and VHS. When I was a kid in the 40's this was one of my favorite radio shows. It worked then because of my imagination and the talent of those radio actors and writers. The later black and white movies were a disappointment because of the lack of special effects, so they weren't convincing at all. Just a guy in a black baggy outfit with the other actors pretending not to see him. This version had it all. The right guy in the starring role, Alec Baldwin as the handsome Lamont Cranson/Shadow. Penelope Ann Miller as the vivacious Margo Lane and a great supporting cast with John Lone as the villain, the great Tim Curry, Ian McKellan before The X-Men and Gandalf, Peter Boyle, Jonathan Winters, et. al. The look of the film was excellent, the comic relief really well done and the writer David Koepp deserved a big slap on the back. This is one of those films that I will look at over and over in the future. The film deserved better and I think better advertising might have created a better financial performance, maybe one matching the performance of all who participated in making the film.

3 out of 5 stars In The Shadow.......2007-02-09

A marvellous escape into the yesterdays of my childhood. A reminder of a simpler less complicated time when good versus evil was a clear-cut battle with good triumphing in this eternal battle. Yes I enjoyed the film and the acting was great and the cinemaphotography was vivid and eye-catching. The setting almost surrealistic. Overall a fascinating experience.

4 out of 5 stars The SHADOW.......2007-02-03

I will never be able to understand why THE SHADOW (1994) is so underrated. Sure, there are things I would have changed, but--the acting was convincing, the special effects dazzling, the dialog witty--and it the film was appropriately set in New York.
The film borrows from both the pulps and the radio show. The Shadow is appropriately clad with an eerie, echoing voice. Shiwan Khan is properly cruel but humorous (how can a Tibetan have pupils THAT big??)
This is not exactly a family movie. There is some language, a scene with scantily-clad concubines. Oh, and the demon-possessed knife called the Purba.
Overall, a faithfully adapted crime fighter/superhero movie. Highly recommended.

This clunky road movie about three drag queens (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguziamo) who get stranded in a sleepy Nebraska town on their way to a beauty contest, is too uplifting for its own good. Released during drag's mid-'90s heyday when RuPaul and the Wigstock documentary were all the rage, To Wong Foo aimed straight for the mainstream with its inoffensive camp and "can't we all get along" moralism. While gay-activist groups howled about straights getting the lead roles in To Wong Foo, in the end the filmmakers really couldn't have done better than this trio of actors. John Leguziamo provides real sass and bite as a Latino (or should we saw Latina?) drag queen, and Wesley Snipes is surprisingly fierce as the imposing leader of the pack. Saddled with a cloying Southern accent and off-kilter wig, Patrick Swayze barely holds his own with his costars, though. To Wong Foo is best viewed as a cultural artifact of a time when it seemed as though drag could rule all tomorrow's parties. --Ethan Brown

4 out of 5 stars "TO WONG FOO" IGNORES ADVERSITY.......2007-04-30

"To Wong Foo" presents a rose-colored view of the world in which all of our problems can be solved if we just tap
into our inner fabulousness! Why, even the problems of seriously abused housewife CarolAnne (Stockard Channing) are cheerfully swept under the rug. I am not blaming the movie for its optimistic life view and colorful hues. It helps the poor abused Carol Ann that drag Queen Vita Boheme (Patrick Swayze) appears as her "angel" and lays some serious smack down on her pig of a husband (Arliss Howard).
Three drag Queen ends up stranded in some un-named fictional, backwater Podunk town when their Convertible breaks down en route from New York to Hollywood. The ladies, naturally, end up transforming the lives of everybody in town over the course of a single, magical weekend. The ladies are pursued by racist, homophobic Sheriff Dollard (the late Chris Penn) who, we discover in a funny bar scene, is a major closet case!
The premise is slight, but the performances are outstanding. Your enjoyment of the film may depend on how you respond to the leading (heterosexual) men playing the leading (gay men in drag) ladies. Snipes (as Noxemi Jackson) and Leguizamo are especially excellent at bringing their inner Drag Queens out. John Leguizamo is outstanding as Chi Chi Rodreiguiz. The role of Vita Boheme represents a major change of pace for Swayze, previously known for macho roles in "Dirty Dancing" and "RoadHouse." Swayze is only half as convincing and successful as Snipes and Leguizamo, but the good news ladies and gentlemen is that he is every bit as sexy and attractive as Lady Vita Boheme as he is as a man (himself). Hey, I'm not asking Swayze to give me the moon here. He really is very good. Robin Williams also makes a fun and funny cameo appearance.
"To Wong Foo" is so optimistic it might as well be a Disney movie, "The Wizard Of Oz" or "The Sound Of Music." I'm all for films about self-esteem and self-empowerment, as long as the viewer realizes that this level of rosy self-empowerment can be achieved in movies but seldom in real life. This is a perfect movie to watch if your feeling depressed. This movie made me smile and laugh when I was experiencing severe depressions.
I cracked up in uncontrollable laughter when Swayze said, "Oh, what in gay hell?" (is this? as Penn's car is seen behind them on the road). "To Wong Foo" is gay in every sense of the word (emphasis on bright, sunny, colorful, happy) and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. Say "Amen."

I was shocked that Patrick Swayze dressed up as drag queen and went on the road trip to Hollywood, CA with Wesley and John. I really think Patrick looked hot than Wesley and John tho.

Media madness reigns supreme in screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky's scathing satire about the uses and abuses of network television. But while Chayefsky's and director Sidney Lumet's take on television may seem quaint in the age of "reality TV" and Jerry Springer's talk-show fisticuffs, it's every bit as potent now as it was when the film was released in 1976. And because Chayefsky was one of the greatest of all dramatists, his Oscar-winning script about the ratings frenzy at the cost of cultural integrity is a showcase for powerhouse acting by Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight (who each won Oscars), and Oscar nominee William Holden in one of his finest roles. Finch plays a veteran network anchorman who's been fired because of low ratings. His character's response is to announce he'll kill himself on live television two weeks hence. What follows, along with skyrocketing ratings, is the anchorman's descent into insanity, during which he fervently rages against the medium that made him a celebrity. Dunaway plays the frigid, ratings-obsessed producer who pursues success with cold-blooded zeal; Holden is the married executive who tries to thaw her out during his own seething midlife crisis. Through it all, Chayefsky (via Finch) urges the viewer to repeat the now-famous mantra "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" to reclaim our humanity from the medium that threatens to steal it away. --Jeff Shannon

Three performers won Oscars.* Best Actress Faye Dunaway is the TV exec guarding ratings like a tigress protecting cubs. Best Actor Peter Finch is Beale, whose airwave rants become a phenomenon. 5 out of 5 stars Network.......2007-07-04

Sidney Lumet's devastating, disturbing satire of the modern broadcast age (written by Paddy Chayefsky) still has a lot to say thirty years after release. Beyond portraying a business that bypasses quality in single-minded pursuit of the dollar, television serves as metaphor for a society mired in sensationalism and greed. Dunaway is commanding in a caffeinated performance as ruthless Diana, Holden unusually affecting as a washed-up veteran of TV's glory days, and Finch a revelation as the unbalanced Beale, winning a posthumous Oscar for his work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Extras.......2007-06-23

Quickie movie review: perhaps the most prescient movie ever, definitely the most prescient made about television, viewers and Corporate America. An almost "fantasy movie" team in front of the camera and behind it produced a flick that lives up to their combined talents. I can think of three incredible scenes in which actors/actresses nearly burn up the screen with brilliant timing, emotion, diction -- and none of those actors/actresses are among the four who got top billing for this movie. They've got several other such scenes of their own.

Now to the extras, which is the reason I bought this two-disc set. I already had the movie via the first DVD release.

You've got interviews with almost all the principals still living, including director Sidney Lumet and actress Faye Dunaway. And they cover an incredible amount of ground concernting the making of the movie (one reason they had such an incredible cast is the script was so good, nobody they offered a part to turned them down. So, the producers got all their first choices. As several cast members are dead, it's been over 30 years since the casting and admitting cast substitutions is common in Hollywood, that's a claim you can take at face value.)

There's also a Paddy Chayefsky interview from "Dinah" (remember her show from afternoons after the soaps were finished?) and another interview with Lumet, who also provides a commentary. Hey, I was more than satisfied enough to set aside free time for watching the extras.

The only part of the extras that disappointed was the Walter Cronkite interview. I've read interviews with Cronkite concerning this movie over the years when he fairly crackled with observation. Maybe it's just that he's aging.

Anyway, the movie alone is worth the bucks. Throw in the extras and you've got a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars a film that left the country talking............2007-06-10

NETWORK, a brilliant film directed by Sidney Lumet, takes a bold and darkly humorous look at the world of network television in the United States. We are introduced to Howard Beale (played by the late, great Peter Finch), an anchorman who is getting the axe for low ratings. Beale announces on the air that he plans to "blow his brains out." Of course, this gets his network and those surrounding forces talking. This lunatic deserves a proper opportunity to say good-bye to his viewership (though, increasingly sparce). Little do they know that what they intended as an opening for him to say good-bye will blossom into a far-different situation. His on air rave generates a great audience, because this man wants to tell "the truth" about the world (politically, socially) and those in the quiet and comfort of their homes want to hear what he has to say. The film also stars Faye Dunaway as a stealthy network spin doctor, William Holden and Robert Duvall.

Of course, the famous line that was extracted from one of Beale's on-air raves and spiraled into one of the most-quoted (and mis-quoted) lines from a film is, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" This quote was used as recently as this past week, when co-star Isaiah Washington was fired from the popular series, GREY'S ANATOMY. It has also been used in many different instances to convey defiance. NETWORK is a brilliant and timely film that reflects the state of our world and how television plays into our daily lives; what's more, how the plight of one man (no matter how mad) can potentially become great fodder for the media if it sells. This could be reflected on today, when we think about those occupying a space in the media (and in Associated Press columns), in the face of a major war and many other disturbing plights. What sells? Ultimately. corruption does. Does it matter how the corruption effects the subject of its darkness? No, just as long as it brings in money, either through viewership or printed publication. The AFI calls NETWORK, released in 1976, one of the greatest American films of all time. I would agree, because it is a masterpiece, with brilliant acting. What's more, Peter Finch received a well-earned posthumous Academy Award, for Best Actor, for this his amazing performance. Watch it for yourself, if you want an example of thought-provoking film at its best.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to take it anymore.......2007-05-30

Network is a cynical but totally beleivable portrait of network television in the modern age. Suits and not journalists run network news like it is entertainment. Ratings points are fool's gold. Thoughtless climbers stop at nothing for promotion and reward. Dirty laundry lurks underneath that eventually forces the entertainment gurus to kill the messenger. This film makes the events that unfold beleivable and eerie. Turn on your television and you can't be sure anymore what is truth and what is manufactured reality. It's hard not to be cynical after viewing Network, which sends a shiver down your spine every time you think about what you see and hear today. Sometimes it seems like celebrity foibles are headline news and in depth reporting of issues is shunted off to public television. It is no surprise that the powers that be have little use for network news beyond sound bites. The soft underbelly of the news is revealing in stark reality in this film. It is a sad commentary on the state of news gathering and packaging. But you can always watch public television and still get the news and if you need a tabloid fix the network news will still be there. Only when people say they have had enough will network executives consider a change in programming. I for one have had enough.

5 out of 5 stars I just wanted to offset the bad review.......2007-05-06

The reviewer who gave this one star was basing this on technical difficulties. This is one of the best movies ever made. It was chillingly ahead of its time in predicting the scourge of corporate media. A post-Watergate classic.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson - Video Greatest Hits - HIStory.......2007-05-24

This was a great video, the songs, the dancing, brought back so many great memories. Even my Grand daughters loved it. Thanks for the memories.

5 out of 5 stars You can't beat the King of Pop in his early years!.......2007-05-22

This has all of the old, really good songs that Michael did videos for. No one can go through the 20th Century without being influenced by "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean", "Remember the Time".... The video even caught the attention of my husband who is not "into" MJ and was supposed to be doing something "important". Children, teenagers, young adults and not-so-young adults all love the early songs of the King of Pop. The video is very entertaining and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2007-05-15

This DVD sure brings me back to my High School Days. I loved watching all the old plus the newer stuff from Micheal Jackson. I love every single short movie especially the Thriller one. Worth every penny. Great for Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson Revisited.......2007-05-07

I loved the long versions of "Bad" and "The Way You Make Me Feel". I had forgotten why Michael Jackson was called the KING OF POP! He was ahead of his time in style, with his video shorts, and his stories. His underlining stories all deal with the human condition in some way--"The Way You Make Me FeeL" deals with the importance of being yourself when it comes to love and "Bad" deals with being good over being bad.

One sees his style copied by so many of the entertainers from all over the world again and again. He's the KING OF POP and to date no one has surpassed him. Many have tried but none with the impact he has made on the world.

Poor Charlotte Hollis. She's been shunned by the community for decades, ever since the fateful night in 1927 when her lover was hacked apart with an axe. Her antebellum southern mansion is slated for the bulldozer, as it stands in the way of highway construction. Charlotte's only hope lies in her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland), coming down from up north to help settle things. Miriam, however, has other designs. Together with her boyfriend Drew (Joseph Cotten), she embarks on a scheme to systematically drive Charlotte out of her mind (not a great leap) and get her mitts on the family fortune. From there, things only get more complicated. Charlotte puts the "gothic" in southern gothic, as a great showcase for completely bizarre, overwrought, and out-of-control performances from all involved. Agnes Moorehead plays Charlotte's loyal, disheveled housekeeper to the hilt, with an odd inflection that calls to mind Amos and Andy more than southern gentility. As the drunken, conniving Dr. Drew, Cotten's accent is indeterminate at times, and seems to come and go. As great as the supporting players are, though, the crown goes to Bette Davis as the shrieking Charlotte, a portrait of isolation and decay stuck in a world of tragic delusions inside her crumbling mansion. De Havilland is a close second as the scheming Miriam; the scene where she slaps the holy snot out of a hysterical Charlotte is itself worth the price of admission. Mary Astor (in her last role) and Cecil Kellaway (as a kindly Lloyd's of London adjuster) put in the only performances with any restraint, acting as counterweights for the rest of the cast. Besides, you'll never get another chance to see Joseph Cotten playing the harpsichord and singing, or caked in mud and lily pads! With Robert Aldrich's claustrophobic direction, Charlotte is as Southern as a field of kudzu, and as subdued as a train wreck. --Jerry Renshaw

5 out of 5 stars A HAIR RAISING SHOCKER.......2007-06-09

THIS SUPERB FILM STARS BETTE DAVIS AS CHARLOTTE HOLLIS WHO HAS BEEN CLOSETED IN HER MANSION SINCE THE GRISLY MURDER OF HER MARRIED LOVER MANY YEARS EARLIER. FINE SUPPORT COMES FROM OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND AS HER COUSIN MIRIAM AND JOSEPH COTTEN AS DOCTOR DREW BAYLESS. THIS THRILLER WILL HAVE YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND SPECIAL MENTION MUST BE MADE OF CHARLOTTE'S LOYAL SERVANT OSCAR NOMINEE AGNES MOOREHEAD - I DON'T THINK EVEN THIS FINE ACTRESS HAS DONE ANYTHING BETTER. FINE REMASTERING FROM THE 1964 PRINT ADDS TO ONE'S PLEASURE SO DON'T MISS THIS REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.

5 out of 5 stars What A Twisted Tale Of Life-Long Deception!.......2007-05-26

Davis and DeHavilland are truly at their best in this shocking thriller, set in the bayou country of Louisiana. The setting, the family dynamics, and the un-expected twists and turns in the story will keep your attention riveted to the screen. I enthusiastically recommend this movie to all lovers of Hollywood classics...

4 out of 5 stars Great entertainment.......2007-02-12

The story behind the conception of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" is well documented, so the question is: without being another Bette Davis/Joan Crawford battlefest, does it match up to the runaway success of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane"? My opinion is that it ranks as a good movie, but falls into the shadow of it's predecessor.

The plot follows Davis as Charlotte, an eccentric recluse who has been shunned by the townsfolk ever since her married lover was found brutally murdered at a party when she was a young girl. Branded as the killer, Charlotte has grown into a bitter and lonely old woman, who is finally forced to come out of her isolation when the county wants to knock down her house to build a new road. The main part of the film begins as Charlotte's cousin Miriam arrives in an attempt to talk some sense into her, and all the skeletons of the past come to light again.

The film is built around it's two central stars, Bette Davis and Olivia de Haviland (who plays Miriam). The two could scarcely be more different. Davis plays Charlotte as wide-eyed, shrill and in a constant state of nervous terror, while de Havilland delivers a performance of sleek velvety calm. The film hinges on the relationship between these two women, and out of the two of them, it is Miriam rather then Charlotte who suggests a character with much more going on beneath the surface, thanks to de Havilland's glacial cool. Davis is brittle and exhausting nearly all the time, and although she was one of the greatest Hollywood stars of her time, some more subtelty would have greatly enhanced the character of Charlotte in places. However, for the most part she is terrific, in fact her performance gets better and better as the film progresses, culminating in a very moving conclusion. De Havilland also does a great job, speaking in silky soft tones for the most part, but capable of erupting into surprisingly venomous anger as more of her true character comes to light. As is usual with a well known film like this, the twists and surprise revelations are already well known, but what impressed me was the the way the various strands were worked into the film, and how effectively some of the twists were then later built up into new twists! It must have been very effective for first time audiences in 1964, and for anyone who has not seen it even today.

The film looks great. Beautifully shot in black and white, it makes great use of selective lighting and deep shadows, more often than not inside the grand but rotting mansion that Charlotte lives in. There are also some great lines in the script, most often spoken by Davis, which make the proceedings border on high camp some of the time, but for the most part it is a quality product. What detracts from the enjoyment are some very lazy post dubbing in several places (where you can see that the actors are either mouthing something different or not speaking at all!), and the opening prologue set at a party supposedly in 1927, which has no attempt at period detail at all as most of the party goers are dressed in contemporary 1960's oufits (one girl even has a beehive hairdo!). This lack of care by director Robert Aldrich is more in line with one of William Castle's schlocky (but enthusiastic) efforts, rather than a major studio production like "Charlotte" was supposed to be.

I haven't really got that many bones to pick though, as the film delivers solid entertainment for most of it's 2hour running time. It IS a little long, but the constantly unravelling plot together with the performances from it's stars (not forgetting to mention the hilarious turn by Agnes Moorhead as the tousled maid) keep you hooked all the way through. Although some of the early parts are a bit of a screech-fest, it definitely improves as reaches the end, in fact Davis' performance in the last half hour becomes quite touching (barring her cross-eyed freak out on the stairs), and the ending scene especially shows that the film has a real heart.

4 out of 5 stars If you haven't seen the movie before...............2007-01-18

......don't watch the film with the commentary feature
activated. The long-winded, overexcited announcer gives
away the plot details within minutes of the opening credits.

Otherwise, this film is a wonderful, nostalgic presentation
of the B-movie style, black and white thrillers of the
late 50's/early 60's. Bette Davis, fresh off her success
of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," returns in a film
adaption of another Henry Farrell story. She reprises the role
of a mentally disturbed dame (in this case, done Southern style)
and she takes it way over the top, but still within the threshold
of high cinema. Fellow Academy Award winner, Olivia de Havilland
(replacing Joan Crawford, who was originally slated for "Miriam")
gives a good performance as the goodhearted relative with dark
ulterior motives.

This is a great movie. The theatrical trailers are laughable at how they present this film as the most suspenseful, horrifying film ever.
Well, given the time period, who knows? In any case, this is an enjoyable
exercise in suspense with Bette Davis at the helm, which always
translates into worthwhile cinema. Along with Davis and De Haviland, Agnes Moorhead
gives a remarkably delightful
performance as the feisty housekeeper,
receiving a well-deserved Academy Award nomination.

Highly Recommendable.

TURN OFF THE COMMENTARY FEATURE UNTIL YOU'VE HAD THE CHANCE
TO SEE THE MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH!!!!!!! If not, the
entire suspense element will be ruined.

Description

Comedy and screen legend Richard Pryor hits the comedy road in Moving, a good-time tale of a flustered suburbanite trying to relocate with his family from New Jersey to Idaho. Dave Thomas, Dana Carvey and Randy Quaid are among the comic ensemble in this movie that packs "a houseful of laughs" (V.A. Musetto, New York Post). Next, Pryor has a driving ambition in Greased Lightning, the decades-spanning true story of Wendell Scott, who cracked the all-white world of stock-car racing, built cars from junkyard parts, endured taunts, overcame setbacks and won NASCAR and Grand National crowns. "There's not a more likable movie currently on view," Time reviewer Richard Schickel wrote about this biopic that marks Pryor's first lead film role.

I bought this primarily for the movie, Greased Lightning. I was telling my kids about it and wanted them to see it.

5 out of 5 stars DVD of Richard Pryor........2007-05-13

Great movie "Moving". I would recommend this movie for anyone. It actually is so clean that I would recommand older kids to see it. It was the best Richard ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor's Funniest Movie.......2007-04-02

I have yet to see Greased Lightning, but Moving is Richard Pryor's funniest movie ever. I wanted this movie so bad on DVD I had to buy a bootleged version off Ebay! It's nice to see that you can finally purchase it legit. A must have for any comedy collection.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor's best comedy ever.......2007-01-20

I have been waiting for 'Moving' to come out on DVD for a long time. It is by far, one of the funniest comedies ever made. With Pryor, Dana Carvey and Randy Quaid you can't go wrong. Plus, you get a bonus movie of 'Greased Lighting.' What more could you asked for.

5 out of 5 stars Classic movies.......2007-01-12

I purchased this movie just for "Greased Lightning". It is about the first man of color to race in Nascar. It was worth the price by itself and "Moving" was also a good movie but not as good as "Busting Loose" or some of his earlier films.

It looks like writer-director Rick Famuyiwa started a popular trend with his marriage-jitters comedy about three friends who reminisce about their lives together as one prepares to leave the group when he gets married. Everyone who rushed to see The Best Man should catch this sleeper which also stars Taye Diggs (as Roland, the reluctant groom), as well as Omar Epps and Richard T. Jones, who together provide charming, cheerful performances full of warmth and humor. This buddy story is told through flashbacks to 1986, when the three met at public school. The young men gain our affection in their competition to win the most girls, which enhances the bond of loyalty we see in them as men on the eve of Roland's wedding. The casting of the boy actors is almost spooky in its perfection, especially Sean Nelson (who had already proven his acting acumen in American Buffalo) as the younger version of Epps. Although the cast is African American, there's no color bar to the themes or entertainment the movie offers, providing a salient lesson to network TV producers under attack by the NAACP for their inability to include characters of color in TV shows. Instead of stereotyping the characters by placing them in "the hood," where gang members and tragedy rule, this life-affirming comedy depicts the lives of members of "the wood," which refers to Inglewood, a middle-class suburb of L.A. that general audiences will find easy to relate to. --Lloyd Chesley

this movie really took me back to the 80's in terms of the fashion and the music, and the fashion out there right now is 80's inspired and making a comeback. I loved the plot, the characters and the funny moments. Definitely recommended.

Years before the fast-food chain hired a talking chihuahua as its official spokeshound, Taco Bell got some high-profile product placement in this dopey thriller set in the year 2032, when the sprawling megacity of "San Angeles" has banned violence and profanity, and where virtually all the restaurants are Taco Bells. (So much for democracy!) Sylvester Stallone plays an ex-cop who's been thawed out after 36 years of imprisonment for manslaughter, and Wesley Snipes plays his nemesis who also emerges from deep-freeze and proceeds to wreak havoc. It's not nearly as funny as the similarly plotted Austin Powers,; but this special-effects-laden comedy-thriller does have a few highlights, including the pre-stardom Sandra Bullock as the cop-trainee who teaches Stallone proper behavior (and sexual etiquette) in the future's conservative society. Co-starring is Rob Schneider as a frantic sidekick who matches Stallone's one-liners with idiotic wit. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Take out your Aggression.......2007-06-21

The only reason I own this is for the times I want to see a great kick b*&t sequence, and Wesly Snipes definitely provides several!

3 out of 5 stars barely mediocre.......2007-05-08

This is the only Sylvester Stallone movie I ever saw in its entirety, and that was because I was stuck on a bus trip between Chengdu and Chongking. It is pure formula junk, with not a jot of originality or anything that rises about banal violence, simplistic good guys and bad guys, and spectacular effects. I would not recommend this to anyone who wants more than the crudest, most brainless Hollywood entertainment, but then, that is why I have avoided Stallone films.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-31

This movie offers an amazing and stunning view of a totalitarian society in the future. Wesley snipes does a great job at playing the villain. The story is told with a comedic twist that makes it so enjoyable to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Satire at its best.......2007-03-11

If this flick doesn't demonstrate the absurdity of political correctnous, none will.

5 out of 5 stars DEMOLITION MAN STRIKES BACK..........2007-01-04

If you are any kind of fan of Sylvester Stallone, you just have to get this movie into your collection!! He does his usual start to finish movie bang-up job of beating up on the bad guys, finding a love interest, and somehow "winning" in the end. Wesley Snipes just does a superb job portraying the "bad guy"!! He is a very ill-tempered killing machine with no regard to anyone's views. After being reprogrammed, while in cryostasus, he emerges as the ultimate killing machine wrecking havoc on a now peaceful society. So, now they have to go into the cryostasus prison and thaw out the ultimate cop. Yep, that cop is Stallone. As he gets re-educated on today's society practices, he must show the peaceful police officers of a new age and time, why he is the only police officer that may restore peace, while taking "Simon" (Snipes) down. It is a nonstop roller coaster of madness and mayhem as Sly finally gets his man and wins the tests of wills with Simon. Cool looking future world too.
