Conceived as a television miniseries, this portrait of the epochal Motown vocal group scores as one of the most detailed re-creations of the '60s pop milieu ever filmed. Told largely through the eyes of founding member Otis Williams (Charles Malik Whitfield), The Temptations portrays its protagonists as soul Everymen whose early triumphs closely followed, and helped expand, Motown Records' emergence as "the Sound of Young America," providing an inspirational fable for black Americans.
Inevitably, of course, the story is also a cautionary tale about the price of success for both the Temps and their mentor, Motown founder Berry Gordy (Obba Babatunde). With hit records and tours, Williams and his partners grapple with drugs, alcohol, depression, jealousy, and delusions of grandeur. In particular, the galvanic lead singer David Ruffin (Leon) serves as both a focal strength and potential destroyer for the group, as his ego combines with a mounting cocaine habit to create a monster. At the same time, Gordy's eventual decision to leave his and the label's home, Detroit, for Los Angeles marks a loss of innocence for the group and their label-mates. The film provides ample insider detail about how the former Ford assembly-line worker created and controlled his unique hit factory.
Based on the biography coauthored by Williams and former manager Shelly Berger, the project gets a vital boost from behind the camera, thanks to executive producer Suzanne DePasse, herself a former Motown exec, and director Allan Arkush (Rock 'n' Roll High School). That lineage probably pulls some punches in terms of individual characters and Gordy's machinations, but it also affords The Temptations its convincing detail, as does the generous running time--a mixed blessing, due to the original two-part broadcast, which might have benefited from tightening for this video version. Giving the show its greatest kick are the group's original hits, performed and choreographed convincingly in lip-synched sequences. --Sam Sutherland

Review of Temptation Performances 1965-1972 - Get Ready.......2007-07-04
This DVD is golden. My husband and I were teenagers during this era and I got this as a gift for him. We watched it together and really enjoyed it. It took us back to the days when we were in Detroit during the Motown days. The performances are fantastic and I am so glad I found it. Please keep tapes like this available for those of us who can remember. Thanks Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
There is only one Temptations movie I love more than this one..........2007-06-13
I saw this movie when it first aired on network television. Most of the commercials were selling the movie in VHS or DVD format and I've always regretted not buying it then. I knew the price the would go down later, but never imagined the movie would be shortened in its re-release.
In this DVD version, which I own nevertheless, some of my favorite scenes were taken out: Eddie Kendricks performing during his solo career; Eddie and David performing "You're My Everything" -- my all-time favorite Temptations song!; and the New Year's Day scene was shortened. This scene provided the most insight into David Ruffin's character. He talked about being abused as a child.
It is still a wonderful movie, no doubt. It is just to my misfortune that I am unable to watch it without a little disappointment. I enjoyed every second of the original version so much.
Love It!.......2007-06-05
I first saw this movie several years ago at my sister's house during the Christmas holidays. I loved it, and watch it over and over again. All the children in the family love it to, and we would stop the tape and practice the temptation walk. They were so tickled at the wigs that looked liked bird nests. Of course, I had to explain that they were trying to get the hair to looked conked.
The music, singing, and dancing, and the story line was fantastic. This is by far my favorite movie to watch. I never tire of it. It has become a classic holiday and any time movie in my family.
The men where all fine as wine and so easy on my eyeballs. The man that played Melvin has that black man, sexy walk that makes me want to holler. The gentleman that played Paul could move those hips something awful. Poetry in motion I say. The Eddie Kendrick character who is just a cutety pie. Leon is sexy as he want to be. He was excellent as David Ruffin. Otis the man with the level head. It was truely an ensemble cast.
This movie is better than 90% of the commercial movies that are released yearly. Again there are a few movies I can watch over and over. This is one of them.
"I Know you want leave me, but I refuse to let you go. If I have to beg and plead for you sympathy, I don't mind cause you me that much to me. Ain't too proud to beg sweet darling." This is one of favorite songs and scenes in the movie with Leon. Oh lawd, I feel like I am about the catch the spirit y'all.
Temptations forever; or until you're replaced........2007-05-10
I say this is the movie that started it all because it is the movie that started my fascination with the Temptations.
Of course I knew who the Temps were. I had heard all of their most popular songs, but I was never a fan...until the movie. I don't even remember how I was first introduced to the movie; only that the reruns were always shown on Vh-1 and Vh-1 Classic.
No matter how many times I watch the film, I'm still surprised by how good it is. The music, the acting, the script; it's all top-notch. I'm also impressed that all of the actors, with the exception of Leon did their own singing. These are talented guys. I especially love Christian Payton as Paul. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him or most of them in anything else since, which makes me angry when I think about the fact rappers are hired predominately to play black characters in film. Which makes me wonder why Brad Pitt will never fear losing his job to Axl Rose, but Leon will always have to fear losing his job to Snoop Dogg: another debate for another day.
A lot of folk have issues with the creative license the writers and producers took with the movie. Because I wasn't aware of the Temptations history (and to a large degree, still don't) until after I saw the film, I really have no problem with it. All movies change things. That's the nature of the celluloid beast. However, there is one omission they make that I feel would have better helped the viewer understand the story: the fact Paul had sickle-cell anemia. Why omit this? This would make it clear it wasn't just his drinking that ended his career. Also, the movie should have used more ambiguity regarding Paul's death considering the real events were so suspicious.
I also don't like the claim that because the movie is based on Otis William's viewpoint, that he somehow exaggerated the shortcomings of the other members and embellished his own virtues.
For the record, Melvin comes out as being the most well-behaved member in the movie, not Otis. And secondly, has anyone stopped to ponder that maybe Otis WAS better behaved and less inclined to indulge in vices than the other members? There is a reason why he's still alive in 2007 while the other members are dead. He must have been doing something right in regards to lifestyle. Third, the movie makes it clear not only is he an adulterer but also two-faced. So how does he come off as an angel? Fourth, the movie is not a play by play on Otis William's book, and he did not have creative control over the movie.
Bottom Line: a great, great film I could watch over and over (which is why I bought the dvd).
Temps Movie.......2007-05-10
Very bad quality. It gets dark and light all through the movie. I watch this movie at least once a month and I hate the quality.
VERY TOUCHY STORY!.......2007-03-29
this movie is kinda long but i loved it every minute i watch it every time it is on TV, now that i have it on dvd i can watch it everytime i want. The songs are amazing my fav ones are "just my imagination", "Shout", "the way you do those things you do" or"my girl" the actors are SO alike to the real temptations. i swear. and the story is so sad but very interesting

The Fighting Temptations may not cure the common cold with its FFF (Familiar Feel-Good Formula), but it'll definitely cure what ails you. Here's an unassuming, well-cast comedy drama, filled with forgiving spirit and jubilant gospel music, and its lessons go down as smooth as a mint julep in summertime. Mostly it's just good, harmless fun, beginning when a deceptive corporate ladder-climber (Cuba Gooding Jr.) returns from Manhattan to his southern-fried Georgia hometown to attend the funeral of a beloved aunt, whose will stipulates a reward of $150,000 if he'll direct the local church choir to win a big annual gospel music contest. The outcome is obvious, but veteran comedy director Jonathan Lynn keeps things percolating with casual flair, especially when a lovely lounge singer (Beyoncé Knowles, in a nicely downplayed costarring role) agrees to rejuvenate Gooding's choir, which teams rapping convicts, a boozy barfly (on organ), and bible-thumping prudes. With musical appearances by the O'Jays and the Blind Boys of Alabama, among others, how could this be anything but delightful? --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
"There is *Definitly HUMOR* in the Church".......2007-03-28
I really enjoyed this movie. The casting was excellent. It had some of the Best Gospel and R&B singers. Also alot of Good actors & actresses. Even though you might not be a church goer. This is still a nice family movie. It is *HILARIOUS* with a great story line.
The Fighting Temptations.......2007-02-19
This was one of the most moving movies I've ever seen. I watched it over and over. One minute I was up praising God; the next couple of minutes I was in tears from laughter; then I was crying along with the characters. The music on the movie & CD was magnificent. Not only is it a great movie with excellently performed music, It has all kinds of life-lessons in it. Every time I watch it, it seems as if I'm watching it for the first time.
Brother Act 1.......2006-12-10
Okay, I admit: at first this movie seems like yet another clone in a long line of lead-the-choir/save-the-church type movies (eg. "Sister Act" & "Gospel"), it actually turns out to be more like the gospel version of "Catch Me If You Can" ... sort of. Okay, well at least it tries to be different ... sort of. Okay, nevermind. It fits the new cliched prodigal-leads-the-choir-to-glory movie-making formula to a T -- can we leave it at that?
And although Cuba Gooding Jr. doesn't seem exactly comfortable in his comedic role of a con-man-turned-choir-director &, standing next to Beyonce, he looks more like a cradle robber than an eligible bachelor (who did the casting?!), the movie has a lot of funny moments, a lot of great music & a great feel-good message ... sort of. Okay, I know it's the exact same feel-good message that all the other lead-the-choir/save-the-church films have, but what were you expecting -- originality?
It's fun. It feels good. It's musical. And it works. Thank you very much & have a nice day.
A feel good movie!.......2006-10-10
Darrin (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is hustler living in NYC. His youth was spent on the road accompanying his mother (Faith Evans) who was ostracized from their hometown church. It was found out one Sunday that Darrin's mom was singing R&B with suggestive lyrics. The strict rules of the church were enforced by Paulina who as the antagonist is successful in ridding of Darrin's mom.
Forward many years later, Darrin receives notice of his Aunt's passing. He makes the trek back to his hometown with big town attitude and swagger. He is revered as a hero, but in fact is a failure in sheep's clothing. His trip comes with an opportunity to cash (and save himself from debt) in on his Aunt's will. He is given authority to reconstruct the choir and enter them into a contest. With green on his mind, Darrin seeks out his quest to bring himself out of the red. He finds out more about himself, his family, and his hometown.
Though structurally not sound, the Fighting Temptations does provide funny moments with touching ones as well. Both Gooding and Beyonce Knowles play believable characters with substance. Mike Epps, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, and Angie Stone round out a nice supporting cast.
Backed up with a joyous and emotional soundtrack, The Fighting Temptations is a good movie centered on the honesty (or dishonesty) of Darrin Hill and the hypocrisy of a small town church. When these negatives are ironed out though, the result is a congregation proud of their choir and proud of one of their own.
Fun and inspiring.......2005-11-19
This movie is definitely NOT BORING. Cuba is offthechain hilarious when he's directing the choir, like a crazed lunatic breakdancing, pew hopping, chandelier swinging choir director. Beyonce is amazing, the Ojays are great. The performances are musically and visually captivating. "He still loves me" at the end was a perfect finale. And I am usually hard on movies, but this one was really enjoyable. I bought it to replay the musical sequences. Oh and there is a nice little storyline in there too. and dat gurl look-ted good 2...

Dangerous Liaisons done right........2004-06-11
Claudia (Susan Featherly) and Blake run a modeling agency. Nicole (Mia Zottoli) wants to be a model. Nicole is married. Claudia bets Blake that she can get Nicole to cheat on her husband. Does this sound familiar? Dangerous Liaisons? Cruel Intentions? Okay, the plot is a just little different, but this one's better, because unlike those movies this one has lots and lots of explicit sex.
There are ten sex scenes, which is pretty good for a running time of about 85 minutes. The first one starts up right at the opening credits and then there's a steady stream of sex scenes and female skin throughout the entire film. Eight of the scenes are boy/girl, one is boy/girl/girl, and one is girl/girl. Mia Zottoli and Susan Featherly are the main attractions in the film and have three excellent scenes each. The rest of the women are plenty nice to look at too and do a good job in their scenes.
This is easy to recommend.
TOO BAD ABOUT MIA.......2002-03-31
I agree that Mia did herself no good when she had her breasts malformed through implants. Her naturals were just so great. Does she actually think she looks better this way? Did she bow to the pressures of some misguided producer? Other than this small subjective complaint, it's a nice entry into the soft core genre.
A softcore primer!.......2001-11-20
This film includes everything you'd expect from a good soft-core, "late nite" effort: enthusiastic (if simulated) sex between and among glossy people in all the usual combinations: boy-girl, girl-girl, and threeway. The plot doesn't hang together all that well, but then again, movies like this aren't exactly plot-driven!
The only disappointment was that the lead actress, Mia (also sometimes billed in her other films as Ava Lake or Mia Zottoli), has gone the implant route. Her natural body was just fine, but now she looks as pneumatic and absurd as altogether too many others making these films. What a shame!

Customer Reviews:
I tried to like it.......2007-02-14
Having grown up listening and having watched the original 5 in concert, I hoped to see the same magic, sadly I didn't. I saw these Tempts live around this time (1983) and I haven't returned to any of their concerts since. Why do groups think that singing the old songs at a faster pace, improves the song. Don't they know we want it the way it was.... The original way. Dennis sings Dennis songs great: PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE: but not David's songs Dennis' way. There are highlights: OLD MAN RIVER: Melvin Franklin still had it. CAN'T GET NEXT TO YOU: TOO SHORT, JUST MY IMAGINATION: NOT BAD. Well we get whats available, lets hope the MOTOWN vaults let loose with some good collections. The new Dvd The Temptations: THE DEFINITIVE PERFORMANCES 1965-1972 gave me the shot of nostalgia I needed.
The Temptations Live In Concert.......2007-01-09
It is wonderful. I am glad I made the selection. I have shared it with many of my friends, who also concur!!!
Save the bucks!.......2006-01-01
Do NOT waste your money on this DVD! This is not the Temptations that we all knew and rocked too . . . yes, they are the "Temptations" of 1983, but this group (talanted as they may be) do not stir the emotions the original Temptations gave us. Buy the 1998 movie for $9.99 and get the "feel" of the Temptations, albeit it is actors performing all the roles.
the best of the last.......2005-09-18
the temptations live is the last of all the groups of tempts that we have seen over the years, this is last and the closes to the real thing .to see five voices together like that and then listen the old tempts it makes you think what was the old tempts like live.
Much too fast paced to enjoy!.......2005-09-06
I have loved the Temps from childhood, the original David Ruffin and Eddie, but I have adapted to Dennis & Tyson. This performance, being LIVE, is expected to be uptempo, but this is RIDICULOUS! The music & singing was done so quickly it hardly gave me a breath to enjoy the songs! I found myself hungering for just ONE song sung at a distant memory of what it once was. If you care to sing along, this is NOT the tape for you. Too many slow songs sung at breathtaking speed. Look for a better live version. I was disappointed.
