5 out of 5 stars Triple Threat.......2003-10-26

This review refers to the "Clint Eastwood - Hero" DVD 3-pack by Warner Bros(10/03 release)....

So... what does an aging master thief, a rough, gruff Gunnery Sgt, and a seasoned Texas Ranger have in common? Well..Clint of course! All three of these films found in this 'hero' collection, which include "Absolute Power","Heartbreak Ridge" and "A Perfect World", are must haves for Eastwood fans. These are three of his works that really show off his expertise in front of and behind the camera as these were all directed by him as well. They also include some of the best talent in Hollywood as Clint has a knack for surrounding himself with the finest actors.

"Absolute Power" from 1997 is the newest of the trio. It's a terrific thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat as Clint goes up against some mighty powerful enemies. He is an aging master thief, and while in the process off pulling of the ultimate job, witnesses a murder. And this murder involves the most powerful man in the world. When Clint is the chief suspect, he must prove that the blood trail leads all the way to the Whitehouse. Not an easy task for our guy, as he is being persued by all sides. The film is multi-faceted as it also let's us in on this thief's softer side as he tries to build a relationship with his estranged daughter. A huge cast includes, Ed Harris, Gene Hackman, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn,Judy Davis, Dennis Haysbert and the great E.G. Marshall.

"Heartbreak Ridge" from 1986 is Eastwood's tough guy image personified. He is Gunnery Sgt. Tom "Gunny" Highway. Gunny has seen it all, and done it all. He's a decorated war hero who has survived battle in both Korea and Vietnam. He's tough and gruff and will soon face mandatory retirement. With no war to fight his last assignment is to whip the members of a raw but feisty recon platoon into shape. He's up against an unwilling group,a "follow orders or else"(not exactly his style)type commanding officer, and an ex-wife who's as feisty as the recruits. Both he and his men(and his ex-wife) are put to the test when war breaks out on the Island of Grenada. Marsha Mason co-stars and the cast is nicely rounded out by Mario VanPeebles, Moses Gunn, Bo Svenson and the wonderful Eileen Heckart.

Completeing this trio in the 'Hero' series is a film from 1993,"A Perfect World". Fans will more appreciate the director side of Eastwood in this one. He's a seasoned Texas Ranger who is in pursuit of an dangerous escaped convict who has kidnapped a small boy for a hostage.Kevin Costner is Haynes, the elusive fugitive and it his work in the film that is really showcased here. It's superbly acted by Costner, and beautifully directed by Eastwood. It's more than just a statewide cops and robbers chase, as the character development, and the past play a big part as the film progresses.Laura Dern also stars and the performance by T.J. Lowther the young actor who plays Phillip, the kidnap victim, is absolutely incredible.

This DVD boxed set is a great deal. Each in their own snap-case, they all present a very good picture, clear with nice color(Absolute Power is outstanding), in widescreen formats with 'AP' also giving the choice of a standard format, and all are in Dolby Dig 5.1 Surround sound. All the action and the wonderful musical scores, all composed by Lennie Niehaus sound fabulous. There's not much in the way of special features. Theatrical trailers and some cast bios. All have subtitles in English, French and Spanish.'AP' has some production notes. If you compare the price of this set to buying these films separately, you'll see what a good deal this is for the Eastwood fan(we're going to buy them all anyway!).Also makes a great gift, those who love Clint, will love this package, so go ahead and make their day!

Thanx...and enjoy.....Laurie

Product Description

Based on Arsene Lupin, the French gentleman thief, the Lupin character, a rakish, devil-may-care antihero, first appeared in Japan in a short manga collection drawn by Katou "Monkey Punch" Kazuhiko in 1967. Since then, Lupin III has become a famous figure in Japan, and has spawned hundreds of popular comic books, and animated television shows and movies. Similar in many ways to James Bond, Lupin sports tailored suits and wacky gizmos, and stays witty under fire. Sometimes he seems bumbling or clownish, but when Lupin gets serious, there isn't a valuable in the world safe from his schemes.

The only live-action Lupin adventure, THE STRANGE PSYCHOKINETIC STRATEGY, appeared in 1974, and featured Lupin going up against the a brutal crime syndicate aiming to steal a priceless national treasure and put him out of the picture, permanently. Along the way, Lupin teams up with the surly sharpshooter Jigen and the frisky cat-burgler Fujiko, as he outwits the ruthless gangsters and outruns the relentless pursuit of Inspector Zenigata.

4 out of 5 stars Fun For Lupin Fans and Non-Fans Alike.......2006-08-09

I'm not big on Lupin III. A combination of a plot hooks that don't really appeal to me and low-budget, old school character design has never made it worth the effort or money for me. But my friends like Lupin III and dragged me with them to see this at an anime convention.

I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I laughed a great deal, and not because of its hyper-retro 70s camp but because of its genuinely amusing, tongue-in-cheek silliness.

"Strange Psychokinetic Strategy" is like a fabulous cross-over of Lupin III and the Pink Panther films: physical gags and slap-stick, a frustrated police chief, crazy assassins (in this case, sexy nuns), adventure, skillful, sexy ladies outwitting everyone else, and the most debonair Lupin ever.

This isn't really universally appealing -- those without a taste for silliness and a tolerance for campiness, intentional or otherwise, will probably roll their eyes at most of this movie. But if you have ever laughed at something involving Peter Sellers or Mel Brooks, you should give this movie a try.

    4 out of 5 stars Decent live-action interpretation of a hilarious anime.......2006-04-04

This film from the 70's (based on Monkey Punch's "Lupin the 3rd") is actually an interesting film for Lupin fans. The story is like a prequel to the mangas and animes. The movie shows Lupin the 3rd's first encounters with Fujiko Mine, Daisuke Jigen, and Inspector Zenigata. Though the film relies heavily on slap stick comedy and 1970's music, which actually works well since Lupin's plot has a very "70's" feel to it, it's a very good comedy. Reccomended for Lupin fans, and anyone who enjoy asian comedies "Like Kung Fu Hustle".

Warning, this film is entirely in Japanese, with English subtitles. No English dialoge. Just letting you know

5 out of 5 stars You become attached to the people.......2007-05-29

Wonderfully acted. That's what I love about these British productions. Great supporting cast,i.e., major actors who are not afraid to take second billing in order to tackle meaty roles - James Fox as Angus Meikle, Bernard Hepton and Barbara Leigh-Hunt as Nigel Havers' parents, just to name a few. The details are just right, even down to Marjorie's utilitarian undergarments while shopping for a dinner gown! We saw the relatively comfortable country life lived by the Flemings contrasted with the bombed out streets of London. The story doesn't end happily ever after; you have to imagine what would come next. But all in all, I loved this series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful series; very satisfying.......2006-11-01

I was happily surprised by this series. The short synopsis given makes it sound very depressing. It was not. Acting was brilliant, low key and believable. This was a very uplifting series. When it ended, I just wanted to see the whole thing over again. That rarely happens to me. Money very well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacularly Accurate & Vivid Portrayal.......2006-06-03

"A Perfect Hero" is a spectacularly accurate and vivid portrayal of the lives of many of the men who fought and died during the Battle of Britain. Specifically, the series captures in the character of young pilot officer Hugh Fleming the cavalier and flamboyant attitude towards life, love and the war that many Spitfire and Hurricane pilots had at that time in the war. It is only after the experience of being shot down in flames during a brief engagement with the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, with the event leaving him badly & painfully burned and horribly disfigured, that Hugh Fleming figuratively and literally rises from the ashes to become not only a man of character, compassion, wisdom and vision but also "A Perfect Hero" in the eyes of his King, his country, his family and the woman who truly loves him.

But there is more here than the courage of one fighter pilot who has been written off by his lowly fiancee', his unit and his friends. There is the extraordinary courage of those in the medical profession, who at the time of the Battle and throughout WWII, were the leading pioneers in the treatment wounds caused by horrific burns. They, to, went beyond treatment and sought to repair not only the shattered bodies of those persons terribly burned and crippled by fire, but lead the way in physical and psychological therapy, which enabled many "Heros", both men and women, to rebuild and repair their shattered lives.

Many people today are unaware of just how dangerous it was to be a Spitfire pilot. Although the Spitfire's designer (Mitchell) was a revolutionary aeronautical genius, the Spitfire was not without flaws. Chiefly, the fuel tank was located right in front of the cockpit, and a well placed hit from enemy aircraft or ground fire could render the Spitfire as nothing more than an inferno.

"A Perfect Hero" is a must see for anyone who is interested not only in the depictions and stories of heroic comebacks, but also for those who are inspired by the courage of man to fulfill his potential regardless of any setback. It is, quite literally, the most inspirational portrayal of man at his worst and at his best every portrayed in an event (the Battle of Britain), whose outcome saved all of mankind.

    2 out of 5 stars ending...........2005-06-30

This is a story about a womanizer named of Hugh Fleming, who is supposedly sort of middle class and hangs with a rich crowd at Cambridge. He urges them to join the RAF prior to the war to be pilots. He is very good. He is very good at everything, much to the jealousy of his friends. His girl, Bunty, is a good time party girl. Hugh is never faithful. He cheats constantly. Anyway, the DVD is an interesting story about Hugh, his love of a good time, love of his handsome looks, and how he loses his looks and his recovery. He meets up with Maggie, a middle class girl from school he had an affair with. She is his physical therapist. I liked Hugh's family, the scenes with his Dad and sister Susan were very good. You had to like his plastic surgeon, too. However, sometimes Hugh's antics/acting were childish like his friend TIm. Also, it made no real sense for Maggie to stay with Hugh considering his obsession with Bunty. After Bunty goes off and marries another, he keeps her photo up! But the biggest issue is that the stories ending is incomplete. After watching 6 episodes, the viewer should at least find out how it ends!!! It looks like Hugh will fly again but does he survive the war? Shame on the director to cheat the viewer of an ending. I honestly can not recommend this DVD since it is a huge waste of time to sit through all the episodes and not even know what happens to Hugh.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for those interested in World War II.......2003-09-29

Like "Piece of Cake" and "Danger UXB", this is another British production that stays with you long after you've seen it. I saw it years ago on PBS and ordered it for the library I work at. I'm now in the process of viewing it again and enjoying it just as much the second time. All three are excellent and highly recommended.
