Description

Professor Davidson and his lovely daughter Diana search Africa for the Lost City of Zoloz. Legend pegs it to be the source of a vast hidden treasure. Their search is hindered by a local crook, Singapore Smith, who wants the treasure for himself. It is further complicated by Dr. Bremmer, an international criminal, who plans to destroy the peace with the local native tribes and build a secret air base at Zoloz. Five Star Phantom.......2007-02-18

I'm a big Phantom fan so I may be biased but I thought this was great stuff. This took me back to my childhood. I saw the serial when I was a kid in the fifties and it's still great over 50 years later. They could have made his costume a bit better but apart from that a great adventure. My teenage kids loved this too, which is saying something.

Really enjoyed this serial. I'm 56, and can still remember going to the Pitt theatre on saturday mornings to catch the serials. Watching the Phantom brings back a time before America lost it's commom sense and the phrase "politically correct" wasn't heard of.

Fast-paced and watchable.......2006-08-08

I grew up reading Phantom cartoons. This video series shows a different Phantom. First, there is no horse named Hero. Phantom of this video is not as strong as in the cartoon. However, these are not major issues for me.

I had a huge problem with the Professor. He does not care about his fellow men, only interested in his pursuit of the Zoloz ruins. I was truly disgusted to hear him say that the wealth of the Zoloz tribes belongs to his sponsor University! What nonsense! Even Phantom was no better. He realized that the jewels in his skull cave are the treasures of the Zoloz, but did not consider returning them to the tribes! In my dictionary, this is thievery.

The Ghost Who Walks.......2006-01-09

This is based on Lee Falk's popular comic strip, "The Phantom," who was known as "The Ghost Who Walks," in purple tights yet. Columbia usually had independent producers do its serials but this one was actually produced by Columbia, taking advantage of the studio's extensive facilities. In a world where the best serials were made by Republic, Columbia was second-best. This certainly one of their very best.

Tom Tyler ("Adventures of Captain Marvel") is an excellent Phantom, and B. Reeves "Breezy" Eason, formerly with Republic, did a great job of directing. Frank Shannon must have matured as an actor, because he's much better here than in the Flash Gordon series. Jeanne Bates signed with Columbia in 1942, and was probably best known to aficionados of horror flicks. She had a long movie career, mostly in smaller parts.

One of the best features of this DVD is the first-chapter narration of Max Allen Collins, the writer who took over the Dick Tracy comic strip when Chester Gould retired. He places "The Phantom" in historical context and really sets the scene to help you enjoy the movie. Be sure to see it before going beyond Chapter One.

John Carpenter's installment in the Masters of Horror cable-TV anthology series looks at the ominous, underground mystique surrounding a notorious 1970s horror classic (now there's something Carpenter should know about). Cigarette Burns tracks the search for said opus, Le Fin Absolue du Monde, by the owner of a repertory theater (Norman Reedus) on behalf of a highly decadent millionaire collector (a role made for Udo Kier). The film, supposedly destroyed after it caused a riot at its only screening, causes viewers to turn into homicidal, cannibalistic maniacs. Even as Reedus gets on the trail of the lone existing print--listening to an interview with the director, looking at production stills--he begins to fall under its supernatural sway. Alas, the same can't be said for Cigarette Burns itself; the stuff about horror aficionados is good, but the production is slapdash, the dialogue stiff, and Reedus's performance incompetent. The basic idea, while a little film-schoolish, has some intrigue, and the notion of a film critic (supposedly a follower of Pauline Kael, no less) driven to write millions of words about this one barely-seen movie is amusingly sinister. --Robert Horton

For Horror Fans, not the General Public.......2007-05-31

Carpenter dons his old school hat and delivers here. The story here is interesting and fits perfectly into the 1 hour format. Excellent gore scenes! Some genuinely creepy moments, and if I weren't so jaded, I may have actually been scared.

The plot is mentioned in other reviews-- sorta reminds me of Polanski's THE NINTH GATE (wouldn't it be nice to get Polanski aboard for an episode?). An rich eccentric, freaky film collector hires some bozo to track down the reel to a legendary film that was screened once and caused the audiance to go berzerka and slaughter each other. The rest is for you to find out and enjoy.

The dialouge is appropriate and the directing,cinematgraphy is great-- I don't care what the mainstream reviewers say. If you are a horror fan and enjoy the old Carpenter films-- you will dig this bad boy.

Cigarette Burn or Hole in the Plot?.......2007-05-24

The long lost, nearly impossible to find film ends up being at the late director's house in the care of his wife. Who woulda thunk it! Maybe they should have started at the top of the list in their search.

Carpenter Does Carpenter.......2007-05-16

As far as Masters of Horror goes, no one is contesting that John Carpenter belongs in the list. Considering that the man behind The Thing is responsible for this installment of the flawed Showtime series, one would expect the episode to ripple with Carpenter's trademark creeping terror, a lush lust for the shadows that make bedrooms, basements, and movie theatres so creepy to begin with.

If that's what you're expecting, you won't be disappointed. Not that much, anyway.

I'll forgive the guy for essentially rehashing a plot that he already did so well (and so bizarrely) with In the Mouth of Madness. There's a movie somewhere out there entitled "Le Fin Absolue du Monde," a grisly flick that's so disturbing that, at its premiere, most of the audience went insane and started killing each other. Mr. Bellinger (Udo Kier as an unapologetically evil arcane film buff) wants to see this urban legend of a film before he dies, and he enlists in his search Kirby Sweetman, a tortured movie-house director who happens to be good at tracking down these sorts of things.

During his quest for the vile movie, Kirby encounters snuff film auteurs, chained and de-winged angels, and flashbacks to his own unsettling past, all accompanied by "cigarette burns," strange glowing circles that, in the movie world, indicate a reel change. There's disturbing (very disturbing) violence, dead-ends, and even a deranged movie critic, one of the film's original viewers, a survivor of the premiere who has spent the rest of his life writing a review that fills dozens and dozens of towering cardboard boxes (Carpenter's smug mockery of his detractors, perhaps?).

It's not surprising that Carpenter has done quite well what he's already done well before, but it is surprising that he would cast Norman Reedus as the lead, Kirby Sweetman. I have listened to those who would defend his performance in this film, but the plain facts are that the man does an absolutely horrendous job. In half of his scenes he wanders about with the dazed expressionlessness of a man who has woken up thirty seconds ago to find a film crew in his house. The rest of the time he appears mildly drunk and seems annoyed by the fact that he has to do some more "acting." I don't get why this guy wasn't fired after the first day.

Nevertheless, in spite of Reedus's incompetence, this short horror segment still works, which says a lot for Mr. Carpenter, et. al. Shudder at the gore, scratch your head at the conclusion, and laugh at Norman's attempts to emote; "Cigarette Burns" may not drive you mad, but it will keep you entertained.

Creepy, surreal, gory, original, outstanding........2007-03-15

This is actually the very first work from John Carpenter since "The Thing" to scare me at all. I was eleven when "The Thing" blew me away with its gore, violence, and creepy horror, but ever since then it seemed as though his films were getting more and more cheesy. Even "In the Mouth of Madness" which I enjoyed for its Lovecraft-style themes and mood was more surreal than scary. "Cigarette Burns" is both surreal and scary, with dark underlying religious tones. There is the running undercurrent during the story of the fear of the unknown, or the unearthed secret and/or creation that should remain hidden for the sake of all mankind. Themes that are undeniably Lovecraft. I actually did not have a problem with the acting at all, I was simply too enthralled with the mystery and eventual horrifying climax to even notice. The heart of the mystery is incredibly original and thought-provoking, the journey absolutely worth taking. With so many bad horror films coming out these days it is incredibly refreshing to see a true Master of Horror show these young twerps just how it should be done. Even if it is just a short film. Excellent.

Cigarette burns is just ok.......2007-03-04

I was disappointed by this masters of horror episode. I guess i expected more from a director like John Carpenter.

There were some scary moments and a bunch of gore, even some music reminiscent of carpenter's older Halloween score, but I found myself thinking the acting was highly subpar and the story was getting more and more far fetched as we went along. It's better than other stuff out there but I'm not sure that is saying much.

Don't Let Go!.......2007-05-25

After "catching" the last half-hour or so of this film on television a few weeks ago I picked up the DVD -- I love weepy stories with happy endings. Within 30 seconds of the opening titles, I was completely surprised and riveted by Angel Eyes. Characters, story, it all worked for me. I won't even try to find fault, the film felt "personal."

Jennifer Lopez is credible as Sharon Pogue, well-liked, a tough, impatient cop with a relentless sense of right and wrong. She is quick to reject anyone trying to get too close, yet her bravado fades when she is alone at night. Her baggage is her estrangement from family. Of course she would fall for the strange, gentle man who pursues her. (I came upon Ms. Lopez and crew filming a music video near my office a few years ago -- she was great to watch.)

James Caviezel's portrayal of Catch is, for me, the personification of grief. What happened to this guy, this artistic, loving man, would not be easily gotten over. I once lost someone whom I could not afford to lose, and all I could do for that person was grieve completely then decide to go on living. I recognized such grief in watching Caviezel, with his detachment and his shuffling walk. By the way, my theory about his name, "Catch," is that the last thing he heard before impact was his son's voice calling "Daddy, catch!" then playfully throwing a toy that went uncaught.

Sonia Braga stands out as Sharon's mother, the faithful wife of a hard man. Shirley Knight shines as Catch's mother-in-law, who hopes he can "see the love in it" in spite of himself as she reaches out to him. Terrence Howard, as Sharon's partner, brought life to his character with humor and affection. Kari Matchett, as Catch's neighbor Candace, cracked me up with her venomous, one-sided telephone conversation. And wasn't Sharon's boring date here played by nasty old Theron (Dominic West) from this year's 300? I couldn't find the character or his name listed in the credits. The soundtrack, by Marco Beltrami and various artists, is good support, reminiscent in places of minimalist John Adams, other times sounding like a broken toy.

There are special features: Luis Mandoki's droll commentary is very entertaining. In it, he describes Jennifer Lopez's ease in performing the fence-jumping stunt that the stuntwoman wasn't able to pull off. That being the case, I don't see any reason why she couldn't restrain a bad guy.

Interestingly, this movie is not coy or overly manipulative. It is what it is - a love story about two hurt people who decide to risk loving each other, to start from scratch, and choose to live. It is not Sixth Sense. While there are dead people, there are no ghosts. Catch it!

Angel Eyes' released in '01 is a sweet romantic tale of two unhappy loners disconnected from family and loved ones. Police officer Sharon Pogue (Jennifer Lopez) and a mysterious stranger known only as Catch (Jim Caviezel) find in each other the means to overcome the emotional obstacles holding them back from experiencing the wonders of the world around them. As you've already guessed love is soon to follow.

The film is a little on the slow side but Caviezel and Lopez are wonderful together and their charisma alone will keep you watching.

Angel Eyes should have been a bigger hit. It's great and different.
Jennifer Lopez plays a cop who one night went to a bad car crash where a mother and child died and the husband survived. Some years later after a 'chance' meeting, she meets Catch who charms her and soon they fall in love. However, he is hiding something and she tries to get to the bottom of it. I won't give away what you may already know, but it's such a beautiful and moving movie. I don't care what anyone else says, - Jennifer Lopez can act (maybe not ever Oscar material, but she always does a good job).
Check out this movie; it's a warm drama that is thoroughly enjoyable and you are bound to love.

Dating as far back as the silent film era, Bulldog Drummond, looking for mystery and adventure and always finding it, offered movie audiences an entertaining time. Perhaps the most fun came with the "B" series starring John Howard as our hero and lovely Heather Angel as his girl. A fine cast of "B" stalwarts such as H.B. Warner, Reginald Denny, E.E. Clive, and Elizabeth Patterson always kept this series fun.

This one starts off with a bang and moves at a good clip, making it one of the best in the series. A bank robbery Bulldog and Phyllis just happen upon provides the adventure while the real question, as always, was whether Hugh would ever make it to the alter with his cute girl Phyllis! She's given him a ten day ultimatum in this one, or she'll marry another. Can Bulldog manage not to blow his last chance with Phyllis and her skeptical aunt?

A mad painter, a radio holding a secret that Bulldog has sent to Phyllis in France, unknowingly putting her in harm's way, and a fine bad guy in Eduardo Cianelli make it nearly, but not quite impossible. This is definitely one of the more entertaining entries in the "B" series. James Hogan's snappy direction and a swift moving screenplay from Garnett Weston and Stuart Palmer give this one lots of zip.

A great ending wraps up everything nicely and gives audiences what they've been waiting for from the beginning: a chance for cute little Heather Angel and our hero John Howard to tie the knot! Fans of "B" films and series will find this one extremely enjoyable. Great fun!

Okay entry in this series!.......2005-07-24

This one is okay for it's genre. Nothing special but a good supporting cast including J. Carrol Naish, H.B. Warner and Anthony Quinn helps. A short running time of 58 minutes won't put you to sleep either. Originally a Paramount release, this is a Congress Films reissue or TV print (probably a dupe at that!) and like most of Alpha's product, it leaves something to be desired. At least it looks like the source material was film rather than VHS tape. If you like the Bulldog Drummond series, you'll probably find this one entertaining.

I enjoy all the Bulldog Drummond movies, no matter who is playing the lead, no matter who is playing the chief of police, Drummond's family friend. His butler Tenny is worth the price of any of these films.

This particular film shocked me in that it takes Drummond and his crew to Morocco, which is portrayed as a sophisticated locale, and very European. The European feel surprised me especially in comparison to other films made at this time which portray jungles with pitch black savages and rampaging wild animals.

I love this movie it's is very sexy and lots of sex and adventure in it very entertaining.

Angel Eyes: Monique Gabrielle's Last Hurrah!.......2004-10-30

This movie is about a woman who is hunting down the people who killed her parents as a child. When she finds them, the woman (portrayed by Monique Gabrielle), seduces them into bed with them, then she kills them. While going after one of the killers, she comes across his woman (portrayed by Rachel Vickers (aka adult film star,Raven)) Ms. Vickers puts on a tour de force performance during the sex scene with her husband. Gabrielle's character discovers the couple making love, and fantasizes about making love to Vickers'character. Eventually, Gabrielle works her way to getting close to the kingpin who ordered the hit, and they end up having spectacular sex on a polar bear skin rug by the fireplace. Gabrielle's sex scene here is probably one of the best performances of her career. Her orgasmic response is fantastic! When the kingpin is about to come, Gabrielle's character chokes him out with a pair of fireplace tongs. How fascinating, a reverse snuff scene in a softcore sex film. That's something that you don't see every day! It is at this point that the police detective (portrayed by Erik Estrada) enters the film, and somehow is involved with the killers in a surprise plot twist. Gabrielle's character survives and moves on with her life. I have not found any other films featuring Monique Gabrielle since this release, but if this indeed is her last film, she is going out with a bang. I loved Ms. Gabrielle's performance in this film, and I wish her all the best. Hip, Hip, Hurrah!!!

I have to warn everyone first-I'm a Monique Gabrielle fan-so this is one sided.
The story is about 'Angel',a girl put in the mental ward for killing her mom.When released,she goes to the only outside person she knows-her mothers last boyfriend, who coincidentally doesn't know how his girlfriend died in the past.
Now-his current beau is not thrilled at all by the new houseguest and wants her out.So Angel tries to sabotage their relationship and remain in the house by whatever means necessary.
'Hand that rocks the Cradle' coming to mind?Only without the kid.The subplot is Angels 'step dad' having business ties with Eric Estrada-an LA minor drug lord.
But,B movie or not-I was pleased by Moniques acting prowess and seeing 'Ponch' play the other side of the law.

Great "B" Series Fun!.......2007-01-29

Bulldog Drummond films date all the way back to the silent era. While the two films with Ronald Colman are considered to be the best by many critics, the most fun and entertaining films are surely the "B" films with John Howard in the role of Hugh Drummond.

The "B" series had cute and lovely Heather Angel as Hugh's fun bride-to-be, Phyllis Clavering. E.E. Clive was great as Bulldog's valet, Tenny, and Reginald Denny offered moments of amusement as his affable pal, Algy. H.B. Warner was fun as Colonel Nielson and Elizabeth Patterson swell as Phyllis' Aunt Blanche, always skeptical that Bulldog would ever make it to the alter with Phyllis.

James Horn directed this one with a screenplay from Garnett Weston based on "The Temple Tower" by H.C. "Sapper" McNeile. This particular entry is quite fun, as Hugh finds adventure in his own home. Five other times Bulldog's nose for mystery and adventure has kept him from the alter with Phyllis, and when a professor shows up at Rockingham on the eve of the nuptuals with a book containing directions to a hidden treasure in the world underneath Bulldog's home, adventure can't be far away.

A secret cipher and the possibility of treasure is just too much for Hugh and his pals to resist, wedding or not! The fun really starts and the pace picks up once the book is stolen and a man is murdered. Phyllis is game, however, and joins in the chase with moxy, asking for a gun. She may need it when she's taken hostage by the killer and the treasure is found, Bulldog and gang on the chase to save her.

There is a dream sequence that lets Hugh recall some of his exploits from previous entries which is campy fun. Leo Carroll makes a good "B" villan and Howard adds the right touch as the man-about-town who can't resist a good adventure. Heather Angel is cute as a button throughout and an ending with a laugh makes this a particularly enjoyable outing for Bulldog and gang. Those who enjoy "B" films, especially series, will like this one a lot.

Deliberately Campy.......2006-03-01

Hue Drummond (John Howard) is finally again (fifth time) going to get married to Phyllis Clavering (Heather Angel.) His soon to be aunt-in-law Blanche (Elizabeth Patterson) worries that he will get into some sort of trouble before the event happens.

As usual Hue shrugs this off and as usual he gets into trouble. Being married means he must move from the loge to the towers. There he meets a bumbling Prof. Downie (Forrester Harvey) that says that somewhere in the towers is a treasure, Also that a criminal Henry Seaton (played by...Wouldn't you like to know) was also looking for the treasure before being was locked up. Luckily they hired a new butler Boulton (Leo G. Carroll) that can act as a guard when needed.

The standard creeping around and murders start appearing.
Will this interfere with the wedding plans?

There are a whole slew of Bulldog Drummond films and books, by different authors and staring different Bulldogs. This film Screen play by Garnett Weston is based on a novel "Temple Tower" by H.C. (Snapper) McNeile. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) an English crime writer and the creator of the Bulldog Drummond series.
