I really liked this movie. It was creepy and entertaining. This would be great to watch with the lights off, curled up with your sweetie. The twist at the end though I did not see coming. It lifted this movie (not that it needed a lot of lifting) about the average 'B' movie. Four stars is fair as this film delivers what it promises when you read the cover. It's worth checking out.

Campfire Tales : Just creepy enough.......2006-11-23

"Campfire Tales" is a decent low-budget horror movie. The concept is really good; A group of teens who have a car accident, ride out the night by telling each other urban legends at an old, abandoned church. Unfortunitely, not all of the stories work. The brief opener, "The Hook" is beyond hokey, & "People Lick Too" is just plain uncomfortable to watch. "The Boyfriend's Death" is far superior, and is genuinely unsettling. "The Locket" has it's moments, and ends up enjoyable if for nothing else then the final scene (which was over the top and funny, in a b-movie kind of way). The film itself, has a really nice twist, which is rare in horror movies (or any movies these days, when the ending if often a forgone conclusion). Overall, not the best, but "Campfire Tales" definitely has it's moments which make it worth seeing.

A good movie........2006-09-23

First of all, "The Hook" wasn't all that good. I liked this movie, and the "People Can Lick Too" story is just creeeeepy. This movie is also has a good twist. Here's what the stories in this movie are based on:
The Hook: Based on the urban legend "The Hook". The killer's hook is often hanging from the door handle.
The Honeymoon: Based on the urban legend "The Boyfriend's Death". Mostly, the guy is killed by an escaped maniac, hanging from a tree limb upside-down, his fingernails scraping the car, or his feet, or, the psychopath is banging the boyfriend's head against the car.
The Campfire: I don't know if this story is based on anything.
People Can Lick Too: Based on the urban legend "The Licked Hand". The dog is often found decapitated, slashed to death, skinned, or throat slit, hanging from the shower head. Poor dog. The girl is also sometimes a teenager, in her 20's, or elderly.
The Locket: Based on a story called "The Green Ribbon". Usually the girl's decapitation is a mystery.
But where's Willy "The Hook" Peters?

A Smart, Scary Movie.......2006-09-13

I love it when I rent a movie, and I am not quite sure about it. The cover is no hint to what's inside and the back summary sounds really interesting but I have been burned before. Campfire Tales stars a lot of C and D list celebrities, and sometimes that is what makes a film good, because they don't have to overcome the familiarity factor that the A listers struggle with.
We have all sat around in our PJ's or around a campfire and told scary stories. It's a rite of passage, which sadly is dying away due to in part the practice of political correctness. This movie takes that tradition, and tweaks it in a surprisingly creepy and shivery way.
I love movies that are broken up into 3-4 smaller vignettes, it gives the filmmakers room to really pack the suspense and action in so they don't have to draw out the story to the point of boring the audience. This one is broken down into three main tales, broken up by scenes of the people telling them around a fire. There are twists and surprises, and it's genuinely scary and creepy. It takes old favorites, and blends them with modern references, with enough nostalgia to allow those of us familiar with the tales to see and feel new things. The most awesome thing about this movie is the lack of computer generated effects, like filmmakers long ago who knew how to scare audiences with shadows, story, and acting this movie excels in the beauty of an "old fashioned" scare. I completely recommend it to anyone who wants to be pleasantly frightened and entertained.

An Outstanding Round Of Horror Tales.......2006-04-27

This is, simply put, a strong contender for the title of best horror anthology movie ever made. With high-level production values throughout and a series of framing sequences that enhances the overall flow of the whole better than any anthology I can think of, "Campfire Tales" offers a pretty diverse mix of spooky/horror/suspense shorts. The most disturbing and uncomfortable of the tales involves a human predator stalking a family, with his primary target seeming to be the child. Given the subject matter, I think it was smart of the filmmakers to have regned this segment in a bit, relying on suspense and implied creepiness rather than anything overt or onscreen violent. In 99.5% of horror fiction I don't think there's any such thing as going too far, but in a case (not to give too much away) like this it could have come off tasteless if not handled with care. In the other segments of the movie the tales are given freer reign in terms of carnage and sexuality, resulting in a variety of moods. The plots of the stories are not groundbreaking - and that's in fact the point, they're designed to come off as familiar ideas that the individual teller around the likes of a campfire would put their own twists and spins on - with themes like the 'hook-handed killer' being trotted out. Despite the familiarity of the stories, the twists and nuances are there to keep them fresh and they're simply done better than most other explorations of similar ground (although the 'hook-handed killer' motif was, obviously, handled to perfection in the first two "Candyman" movies). Combined, the various segments and the 'framing' story run the gamut through scariness, appropriate humor, sexiness, eerie atmospherics, dark psychological and 'unexpected turns' territoty, with occasional dashes of 'supernatural fantasy' type moments added in as well for an even better blend. The movie certainly isn't hurt by having one of the best-looking ensembles of female cast members either. All tolled, it rises to the level of an anthology that achieves true greatness.

My roommates and I rented this movie in college, thinking it would be scary. It was so awful that we were in hysterics for pretty much the whole movie. I think we had to pause it so that we could calm down from laughing. If Mystery Science Theater 3000 was still around(sniff...I miss that show), this would be the PERFECT movie for them to watch. Rent (or buy, the cheapest copy is 29 cents!) this movie if you want to be entertained by just how bad a movie can be.

Definate MUST NOT SEE..........2005-09-05

This ranks down there with the worst of the straight-to-video horror movies of recent years. The acting is sub-par, the "campfire stories" are dull and predicatable, and the myriad video camera angles and technqiues border on the nauseating at times (oh, not to mention the worst CGI you'll see this year in the "Indian" story). It's such a waste of time, that there is really nothing at all ever remotely interesting enough to make a comment like "worth seeing for a laugh" or the usual... Just skip it - save your time and money. (yes - it is one of THOSE movies, sorry to say).

Just by way of background, and while other reviewers seems to prefer to reveal much of the story and plot, I think that sort of ruins the film in many cases. So, you'll want to look for other reviews and reviewers if that is what you are looking for...

This movie was not that bad. The first time I watched it, I was like what the heck??? I looked at it a second time, and I really like it. I won't write another movie description because other people have done so already.
Check the movie out for yourself, and maybe you'll like it, too.

this movie is not even worth renting, trust me. the entire crew of this movie put so little effort into all aspects of production that it is completly unwatchable. The plots are simple and childish(essentialy poorly acted and directed "Are you afraid of the dark?" sequences.

Creepy bunch of stories!.......2004-06-19

I was expecting cheese but surprisingly the acting was quite good and a lot of the plots were really nasty and bad minded people getting what they deserved I guess. Little too graphic in my opinion but it's horror so that should be expected.

Set in 1981, Rachel Gerlik is a forty-two year old widow with two adolescent girls, struggling to move beyond grief. Feeling very much isolated, it is her "life dream," she says, to join the founders of a new settlement in the West Bank. The selection committee is dubious about including a single woman, and her two girls accuse her of "sucking up" to them in her neediness to be wanted. Esti, her older daughter, acts out with an Israeli soldier, while the younger Tami gets more attention than she bargained for at the settlement's youth group bonfire. Into this mix steps Yossi, an older bachelor-bus driver who also describes himself as a left-out, overlooked outsider. When Tami's reputation is publicly smeared, Rachel's stock sinks even lower with the settlement's leaders. In the end, she spurns the settlers in favor of her outsider status with Yossi and her two girls. Campfire is a personal rather than a political film, although some Israelis have criticized writer-director Joseph Cedar for smearing his Zionist family roots. The film won five Israeli Academy Awards and was Israel's entry for the 2004 Academy Award competition as Best Foreign-Language. In Hebrew with English subtitles.

I saw this All Grown Up special twice and it is okay. Basically the gang is heading to a camp. I haven't seen this special for a while and to be honest, I liked the regular rugrats better. The old ones, not the crappy ones with Kimmy. Rugrats started to get really stupid in 2000. I don't own this, but if you are a huge fan of all grown up, you probably will like it. But I don't think it is worth buying because you can see it on TV.

Actually this is not the movie "Campfire Tales". The plot of this one sounds to me like a horrible movie called "Campfire Stories". Stick with "Tales", it is a much better movie.

A technical delusion.......2006-04-04

This doesn't look as having been shot in 1994! One can guess either the use of a primitive VHS camera, or perhaps a better one, whose material has been miserably transferred to DVD. With my SONY Handycam I an reach 10 times better results. AMAZON should warn customers on the inferior quality of this product. We are in the 21st Century now and even porn producing companies supply better material. A pity for the good models and good intentions of the producers.

This film was a complete waste of money and time. Unless you enjoy watching a bunch of nude guys prance around, stretch, and hint about sex, get some real porn action!

Very charming films from a young promising director. These are great little short films about gay love and loss. It is a delight to see the gorgeous cast in Bavo's bittersweet art films. Bavo's website has news about a first feature, I can't wait for it to be released. These films are classic but not at all mainstream, a real must for anyone expecting something special.

A painful example of how not to shoot a film.......2003-10-31

Don't bother with this painfully awful example of poor craftsmanship, unless you really like to laugh at the campy effects, bad acting and lack of real storytelling.

Talk about a waste of money! I too continued to watch, also trying to convince myself that this just might be an art film and I was, perhaps, just too dense to "get it." No. The fact is, the writers didn't get it. The directors didn't get it. And the actors didn't get it. And I hope after you read this, potential buyers won't get it either. What a waste of money. eBay, here it goes! I should have shared the copy Matt Price from Houston bought and least I might have had a good time!

An absolute waste of my time and money. I kept trying to justify my purchase by telling myself that this was a collection of "art" films, but after watching the last one, I decided that it was just a big mistake!

An exhilirating film.......2007-06-03

While this film is narrated by a woman, it is written and directed by a man, Joseph Cedar For those of you familiar with Israeli cinema, Mr. Cedar is also responsible for Time of Favor, a film which won six Israeli Oscars.
Campfire is careful to not portray Zionism in a cartoonish way, although I am sure many will disapprove. The characters are well drawn. The actors ave all appeared in other Israeli films, plays and television and are well respected. This is a film worth seeing.

Propaganda in place of Art .......2006-07-02

I so much wanted to like this film. An Israeli film which was much celebrated in the local press. It was supposed to be a sensitive family drama in which a newly- widowed mother plans on making a new life by leaving the City and going off to a settlement. And there is indeed a nice, little love - story between the widowed mother and a humble , bachelor bus- driver.
Two elements ruined the film for me. One, a too graphic and violent for my taste rape scene. Here I may be unfair to the film but at my age this kind of violence is simply something I do not want to see.
As for the second objection this is one I think has substance artistically. The highly artificial and cardboard- like way the people of the settlement are presented makes it all unconvincing. Lots of little cinematic tricks are used to make the Jews of Judea and Samaria seem ugly , narrow-minded and crude.
Shallow stereotyping of this kind is opposed to the real exploration of character which makes for true cinematic Art.
