James Patterson was probably shaking his head..............2007-05-17
James patterson was probably shaking his head when he saw the final cut of this film let alone the script. Due to: First of all the main highlight of the Woman's Murder Club seires is that it takes place in San Francisco and in this movie you dont even know where this takes place, Secondly the script and the movie as it goes along it goes more and more off the content and story of the fantasic book that it is (like for instance one of the characters of the Womans Murder Club in this movie was invented by the script writers, they repalced one of the characters with a fictional one and the one that is in the club ,in the book, was in the movie but as a side character). DONT BUY THIS IF YOU ARE A TRUE JAMES PATTERSON FAN. You the JP fan will probably use this DVD as an expensive coster for your drinks.
Cant wait for the ABC series of The Woman's Murder Club that will premier this fall. Hopefully they will do the book series justis.
THRILLER.......2007-02-27
My husband and I are fans of James Patterson and were thrilled to add this dvd to our collection. Like his books, the movie was suspenseful and exciting. The price was right and delivery was quick.
First to die - movie.......2006-11-13
I found this movie to be different from the book and in all honesty did prefer the book however, I still enjoyed the movie and have watched it several times. It was worth the buy.
Dry, very dry..........2006-04-07
The same thing that made this movie such a great book, makes it a horrible movie. The book gets right into the story. It grabs you and holds on until the end. The movie is the same, but gives you no time to get to know the characters. If you are going to see this movie, I highly recommend reading the book instead.
Art irritates life.......2005-09-05
I never read James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series, but I am pretty sure that it can not be as dull as this film because it would not have been as succsessful other wise. "First to Die", the movie, is about a group of women (one a cop, one a reporter, one a ME, the other a DA) who find it difficult to solve a gruesome series of murders, so they form a Women's Murder Club in order to think outside the box. The murders in question a bunch of brides and grooms murdered on their honeymoons. The trail of evidence leads back to a succsessful mystery thriller author (Robert Patrick) whos book seems to shadow the murders perfectly.
To say that the plot and it's twist is a streach is an understatement. Plus it gets marred down in personal melodrama that makes some soap operas look tame. The hero is cop Lindsey Boxer (Tracy Pollan), and she gets a lot of screen time considering this is supposed to be about the club as a whole. The only other club member who gets any significant screen time is ME, and I think that is because she is played by Pam Grier. Anyway, Boxer has a romantic realtionship with her partner (Gil Bellows). Are you yawning yet, I am. Plus to make things even worst (for the veteren thriller fan, anyway) she has a blood disease that makes it harder for her to concentrate. Not to mention that at almost three hours, the film drags really badly.
The performances are alright, I guess. Tracy Pollan did a good job; I just wish the screen writers could have given her something more substansial to work with. Robert Patrick also did pretty good, but he had to change notes about how to play his character too many times to fit in with how the story needed him portreyed; a smart scriper could have developed the story to change around him, not the other way around. After that the performances are kind of flat. Gil Bellows is their to be sexy and be a strong shoulder for Boxer to cry on. I liked Mitch Pilggi's wise guy cop; predictable, but in a good way.
Just one last thing. The novelist Nickolas Jenks, the Robert Patrick character. Is it my imagination or dose his whole career seem to copy James Patterson? The book cover for all of Jenks's novels look exactly like the covers for Patterson's. I have to wonder if maybe this whole idea is maybe some kind of sick fantasy. I know Patterson can get pretty carried away in his novels. But after watching this I have to wonder.

A haunting love story.......2006-10-06
TO DIE FOR: a.k.a. Heaven's a Drag. This is a strange little film but very entertaining. It has a lot of emotion. Tears of sadness, laughter, boredom, and so on. You never know what the next minute is going to contain. Simon, played by a very beautiful Thomas Arklie, loses his lover to AIDS, but gets him back in a very haunting way. Marc (Ian Williams) doesn't want to let go of his gorgeous lover even though he is supposed to be dead and gone. He comes back to haunt Simon who is trying to go on with his life with a series of one night stands. His dates are in for a surprising time when the jealous ghost of Marc play tricks on them and Simon. A very different theme than you will see in any other gay film. Arklie's acting is superb, but not a match for his looks. Williams' role spans a wide range from drag queen to mean ghost, jealousy, practical joker, victim, obnoxious queen, undying love, defender and more. His acting is good but not a character I really liked. The sound quality on this film is not real good. I had it turned all the way up and the only thing that didn't need more volume was the musical score which was way too loud and overshadowing. Don't expect a world class production from this movie, but don't let bad reviews keep you from seeing it. I recommend this one but would certainly recommend others much higher. If you're in a mood to see something crazy, funny, and totally unusual, but gay based, this one is a good change of pace.
An uneven film about AIDS, love and ghosts.......2004-06-26
Simon and Mark, a gay couple living in London, have an open relationship. Mark is a drag performer living with AIDS; Simon his his lover who sleeps around. When Mark passes away, Simon quickly removes every aspect of Simon from his life, tossing his clothes, boxing up their photographs and hiding Mark's AIDS quilt piece in the closet. This does not sit well with the spirit of Simon who returns to wreak havoc on Mark's string of one-night stands.
The film as a whole is uneven. It kept jumping from being a movie about AIDS to a ghost story to a comedy to a drama to a soap opera, and was never quite able to hold my interest. The acting is marginal and sometimes overly melodramatic so I never really liked the characters. Add to that poor sound quality (I had the volume almost at full tilt but could still barely hear much of what was said) and a graininess to the film, and the movie veers away from its potential.
Not great, but kind of cute........2004-04-04
Though the movie did have trouble sort of picking a genre - It was sometimes funny but not very effectively so - it was still entertaining, in my opinion. It was very adorable at times and the music was done well. Very quirky concept - Lover dies of AIDS and comes back as a ghost to help his former lover come to terms with his inability to confront his emotions, not just about his lover's death but about a multitude of events in his life. Watch it if you're bored.
this is not the real "to die for".......2001-09-08
This title infringes on the movie trademark "to die for" owned by Picture Entertainment. For more information please contact the law firm of Aaronson & Aaronson, 818-655-7010.
What?.......2000-10-15
The only thing I have to say about this movie is that the sound quality is so poor that you can have the volume up all the way on your TV and still not understand what the people are saying. Putting that aside, the story itself is not very interesting either. The front of the video looks like it is a comedy, however this movie is not funny. The story, 2 lovers - they have an open relationship, one has AIDS and dies, He comes back as a ghost to haunt his lover, preventing him to have any more one night stands.
