Richard Gere is pretty convincing as a severe manic-depressive whose episodes of euphoria sometimes find him dancing on a two-by-four far above the street or climbing onstage during a symphony performance to "conduct" the orchestra. When the pendulum swings the other way, he is practically catatonic. As a character study, this film by Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has its truly compelling moments, but Mr. Jones isn't just a character study. Inexplicably, Figgis ushers in a preposterous romance between this poor fellow and his psychiatrist (Lena Olin), a relationship that is supposed to raise interesting ethical and dramatic issues. All it does is make one wonder what the devil the doctor is thinking of, and why Figgis felt it necessary to go down this lose-lose path. With Delroy Lindo in a nice part as a sympathetic construction worker who tries to help Gere's character. --Tom Keogh

How many movies offer the rare spectacle of a parasailing pink starfish flying over a crowd with a congratulatory pennant clenched between his buttcheeks? And that's only the tip of the iceberg--The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a freewheeling goof of a cartoon, full of surreal twists as its diminutive heroes head down a dangerous road to rescue the lost crown of King Neptune. SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny), an arrested adolescent in the mold of Pee-wee Herman, works at a fast-food restaurant that serves something called Krabby Patties (as the restaurant owner is himself a crab, it's not clear what exactly they're made of). His best friend Patrick Starfish (Bill Fagerbakke) lives under a rock and has an IQ in the lower digits. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot as they strive for manliness. Anyone seeking a coherent world will be disappointed; in this undersea adventure, things catch on fire or seem to be surrounded by air whenever it's convenient for a gag. The jokes are often more silly than actually funny, but there's an undeniably energetic joviality to the proceedings. Featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and a fully fleshed appearance by David Hasselhoff. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars This is my homework movie.......2007-06-25

I've seen this countless time, opening night in theaters and own it for when I'm doing homework. The humor as Spongebob seems to be is more adult and 80's in this film then it ever has been in the TV show. Including a hair metal dance sequence. When I saw it in the theater the kids giggles at their heroes and smiled, but the poor parent dragged to bad kid movie after bad kid movie were laughing, jokes about David Hasselhoff, and a nut bar. It s a film knowing that the people seeing it are stoners and people not looking for the next Disney celebrity voiced Oscar fest but a film to space out at and simple enjoy. And out of the countless bad Nick cartoons made into movies this has to be one of the best, beating out Rugrats, Hey Arnold and Doug by a mile. And lets not get started on the last piece that's come out of Disney in the last 10 year. So on that note it worth to see if you know its not going to be GOOD then its going to be fun at least, and simply enjoyable.

I'm an adult and a member of the "Spongebob Underground": adults who enjoy the cartoons but are afraid to say that to other adults. So, I'm a big fan and I've seen most all the cartoon episodes. I think Spongebob was the first great cartoon of the 21st century.

But the movie just doesn't work. It's like they had enough material for a typical 11 minute cartoon and they tried to spread it over an almost-hour-and-a-half movie. It was strained humor, tedious to watch, and mostly mindless slapstick stuff for little kids. The part that the parents enjoy, that the kids don't get, just wasn't there (except for the NPR joke that I thought was hilarious). But one great joke does not a movie make.

I really enjoyed this movie. When I first heard that they were making a Spongebob movie, I didn't want to see it as I imagined that it would just be a really long episode and I couldn't see how they could make the fun last for the length of time a movie lasts. But the story is well thought out and the fun does last the whole movie. I particularly love Spongebob consoling himself with ice cream sundaes when he doesn't get promoted, he and Patrick get a little out of control. The movie really was fun and I can watch it again and again and still laugh. Well worth the effort.

The Dark Knight and his cohorts Robin and Batgirl do battle with a scarily sympathetic archvillain in this superior animated movie that both kids and adults can watch without feeling insulted. While not quite as inspired as the previous Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which is still the best portrayal of the title character ever to grace the screen), this well-plotted, awesomely stylish wall-to-wall actioner perfectly captures the fundamental essence of the classic comics, and makes the treatment of the same characters in the painful live-action Batman & Robin look even more ineptly misguided. Simply put, this is how the Masked Manhunter of Gotham should be depicted. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Freeze...did he really do anything criminal?.......2007-02-13

I truly enjoyed this particular Batman episode. It was action-packed. The animation and graphics were just fantastic!

Mr. Freeze, a.k.a Victor Fries, is somewhere in the Artic, along with his wife, Nora, who is in a cyrogenic (sp?) state. Nora is suffering from some heart disease. Mr. Freeze, who truly loves his wife, has put her in a capsule to slow down the disease until a cure has been found.

However, when something happens that threatened the health of Nora, Mr. Freeze must act fast to save her life. Mr. Freeze stalks Gotham City, along with his 2 polar bears. He kidnaps a doctor, a former colleague of Mr. Freeze. With the doctor's help, they were able to pinpoint who shares the same rare blood type as Nora's...and that is Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl.

Dick Grayson (Robin) and Barbara are out on a date at a swing dance club. Mr. Freeze attacks the place and kidnaps Barbara. Dick tries to save Barbara but ultimately fails.

Batman and Robin investigate immediately. Their investigation led them to discover why Mr. Freeze is in town and why Barbara has been kidnapped. The problem is where is Barbara hidden. Time is essential.

At first, you'll look at Mr. Freeze as this vicious villian. However, after reflecting, you'll see that he shares the same frustration like the rest of us on the medical system. His wife is slowly dying. She can be saved with some medical treatment. However, the waiting list is long. The cure has yet to be discovered, despite the donations of millions of dollars. In the end, Mr. Freeze was simply a desperate man who wanted to save his wife.

My favorite part was the end, where everyone is helping each other despite what damages have been done. However, was it enough to save Nora? That's for you to watch and find out.

*SubZero* is one of the best animated shows that I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Piece That Spotlights Dick Grayson.......2007-02-11

Mr. Freeze is up to his old tricks again. For the last time, he's going to try and save the life of his comatose wife through criminal means.

Victor Fries, now turned into the tragically cold Mr. Freeze, enlists the help of a villainous master surgeon to conduct an organ transplant on his wife Nora. When there are no available organs, Freeze commands him to GET one. And the one person in Gotham who matches Nora's blood type is Barbara Gordon, secretly Batgirl.

The early minutes of the film present us with a posh shindig, to which Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are invited. They show up looking dapper in their tuxedoes, both with one thing on their minds but in different ways. Bruce is womanizing the beautiful female guests and Dick is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the object of his affections: Barbara.

Dick and Barbara begin what one can only call a budding romance, which stays canon with comic book lore. While the two always flirted and hinted at becoming involved during their adolescence, they never really started dating until reaching their early 20's.

Sometime later while Dick and Barbara are on a date at a swing dance club, Mr. Freeze has tracked her down, bringing along two fierce polar bears as "henchmen." They tear up the place and Dick does a pretty good job trying to protect Barbara, but I know he's better than the display he put on. He's Robin for crying out loud and I expected more of a fight. "Pretty good" just isn't good enough for Batman's second as far as I'm concerned. So, to make a long story short, after a tricky car/motorcycle chase through the outskirts of Gotham Hills, Freeze gets away with his hostage.

Of course, Batman and Robin eventually sniff out their whereabouts through sheer detective work, which is nice to see from time to time. Just as Barbara is on the verge of escape, she hits a wall and the Dynamic Duo have to officially bail her out of trouble. The last sequence is absolutely beautiful. Everyone is trapped on an oil refinery in the middle of the Atlantic and, through negligence and dramatic influence on part of the writers, it's going to explode soon. Fighting fires, polar bears, Mr. Freeze and a trigger-happy doctor, Batman, Robin and Barbara Gordon manage to save themselves, the day, and a few lives in one spectacular finish with a happy ending.

The artwork is sometimes good, sometimes wonderful. I had the feeling that there was a different artist in the first half than in the second - with the second half being better by leaps and bounds. It was almost as if there's a seperate person handling the animation when Dick and Bruce are in costume. Either way, no real complaints here. The story was dead on and the voice-work presented the usual kick-butt results that we've come to expect from the Batman cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Batman and Robin if Tim Buton would have cotinued it........2007-01-21

If Tim Burton and Michael Keaton would have continued the live action films or aleast Christopher Nolan (from Batman Begins) this would be the real Batman and Robin. In my opinion this should have replaced Batman and Robin, and came on the big screen. It has everything you want in a Batman film. It has a gothic dark gritty look like Batman, Batman Returns, and the all famous Batman Mask of the Phantasm. It also has a good story, nice action and touch ups on the animation, a very good dialog & atmospere. So if you have Batman and Robin, and don't really like it much get rid of it and replace it with a real Batman film called Batman and Mr.Freeze Sub Zero.

4 out of 5 stars Winter...has come at last!.......2007-01-04

This movie is the second animated feature from the Batman series. As far as movie plot is concerned, Mr. Freeze's wife is on her last leg, some sort of heart failure has put her life in danger. Freeze not being one to be put on a waiting list decides that since there isn't a living donor available, he'll make his own out of a live one, Barbara Gordon. Enter both Batman and Robin(who was either still with the circus or at college in Mask of the Phantasm), step up to stop Freeze.

As far as the animated Batman movies go, I've never truly disappointed, I'm just not a big Mr. Freeze fan. My personal favorite villian is the Joker, but I don't even really consider Freeze a villian up until the Gotham Knights series. He's just an incredibly intelligent man pushed by his world into his current position. However, if you want good animation, and really good story, and Excellent voice acting, then this is your movie.

If you haven't even heard of the animated series, I'd recommend a few episodes first, or Mask of the Phantasm.

'Till Amazon asks me to do this again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better "Batman" movies.......2006-09-28

"Subzero" is one of my favorite "Batman" movies, because of Mr. Freeze. Using traditional 2D animation, 3D CGI (Which looked cheesy) and a good story, they created a perfect conclusion to "Batman: The Animated Series". I didn't expect much since it was a direct-to-video release, but it was a theatrical-type movie that was very good. Overall, this is a must buy/rent.

Has Young Mr. Lincoln--the first cardinal masterpiece of director John Ford's career, and the finest film of that epochal Hollywood year 1939--been neglected because people fear it's a stodgy history lesson? Even Henry Fonda, drafted to play the title role, was reluctant till Ford testily explained, "This isn't 'The Great Emancipator,' for God's sake--it's a movie about this jackleg lawyer...." And so it is: a small, slow-gathering village tale about a young man whose biggest moments--such as losing the love of his life--occur between scenes, and whose emergence as a historic figure is decades away. Yet the essential Lincoln is being forged in luminous scenes that unfold with the simplicity of fable, only no one knows it's a fable yet. The French title for the movie says it beautifully: Toward His Destiny.

The script, by Lamar Trotti, introduces Lincoln as a frontier storekeeper and drolly inadequate politician. In an early scene, we see Abe receiving his first books of law in a casual transaction with a pioneer family on their way to make a new home in the wilderness. But was it Trotti or the director who decided that this same family should circle back into Abe's life years later for the dramatic heart of the film, a murder trial in which his wit, ingenuity, and bedrock decency shape Lincoln's first public triumph--and that neither Lincoln nor the family recognize they have met before? That's typical of the movie, in which what is most important, most definitive, most valuable, is always outside the frame, out of reach, beyond naming. Even triumph is imbued with a heartbreaking sense of loss.

This transcendently beautiful film was a modest production, without the Pulitzer Prize cachet of Abe Lincoln in Illinois (not a Ford picture) the following year. Fonda, in his first of six collaborations with Ford, is the only marquee name in the cast, though Alice Brady is radiant as the pioneer matriarch (her final performance), and Ford stalwart Ward Bond has a key role. Sergei Eisenstein, no less, wrote a lucid and impassioned appreciation of the film, hailing it as "a movie I would like to have made"--and proved it by stealing a few visual tropes for his own Ivan the Terrible! This is a great, great motion picture, eminently deserving of the Criterion treatment on DVD. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

American master director John Ford crafts a fictionalized account of ten years in the life of Abraham Lincoln (magnificently portrayed by Henry Fonda), before he became known to the world

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Young Mr. Lincoln.......2007-06-21

Based on the Oscar-nominated screenplay by Lamar Trotti, and unspooling with the simplicity of a frontier parable, "Lincoln" teamed Fonda with Ford for the first time, resulting in an extraordinary collaboration. Fonda, who originally declined the role because of his awed reverence for Lincoln's legacy, embodies Abe with plainspoken assurance and gutsy idealism. Weaver, as the future Mrs. Lincoln, and Alice Brady, as the mother of two sons presumed guilty of murder, round out a luminous studio cast. Don't miss this stunning, mythic portrait of American greatness personified, by the legendary director of "Stagecoach."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful film that aims to illustrate a life through a single episode.......2007-01-19

While Ford's remarkably photographed film covers ten years in the life of young Abraham Lincoln, the focus is on a single episode of his life that only a master of nuance like Ford could use to tell effectively the whole story of his career. The first several scenes, are simply a series of moments that establish a mood and Lincoln's attitude: he is smart but uneducated, he was in love with a woman who believes in him and whose death motivates him to take up her challenge to "be somebody", he is simultaneously introspective and isolated and yet more at home with the "common people" than with elites, able to connect by not seeming to take himself all that seriously, he understands the law as a tool for overcoming wrongs and achieving rights rather than an end in itself. The story itself gets rolling when, after he's established himself as a new lawyer, a couple of country kids get in a fight with a local bully who also happens to be a deputy and accidentally kill him. His defense of the kids simultaneously illustrates: (1) Lincoln's capacity to appeal to simple intuitions of right and wrong, sometimes through humor and self-deprecation and simple story telling, that spoke to an American populace so far not entirely committed to lawfulness; (2) tied to that theme is the idea that the people's sense of justice was rooted in feeling -- as evidenced by their sense that a lynching performed in outrage would serve justice -- so Lincoln understood that for the people to commit themselves to the law required an appeal to the same level of feeling and intuition that drove them to be more or less neighborly for the most part and to group together in outrage and vengeance on occasion; (3) Lincoln's ambiguous sense of ambition: attracted to a higher life, and yet feeling a bit out of place within it; motivated in part by a desire for fairness, but in part by a longing to be respected and to demonstrate the condescension of the elite and educated to be misplaced. It is a compelling piece of filmmaking -- illustrative of the American style of mythmaking that aims to show the "ordinary" common man behind the legend rather than the legendary origins of a hero. Criterion has, as usual, done a remarkable job with the film -- that visually seems not to have aged at all.

3 out of 5 stars saint abe.......2007-01-18

Roughly one half hour into Young Mr. Lincoln, our hero the Great Emancipator stands between a lynch mob and a jailhouse holding two young white men accused of murder. Vigilante justice, he tells them, is not something to be taken lightly. "The next thing you know...it gets to the place where a man can't pass a tree or look at a rope without feeling uneasy." Awfully prescient, Abe, though I doubt it's your fair-skinned defendants who will reflexively be touching their throats at the sight of a noose in the decades to come.

Later in the picture, a woman describes how her husband was killed by a "drunk Indian." We feel bad for her since she is a nice woman going through a lot - a lot being her sons on trial for murder (even though the boys are being defended by Abraham Lincoln so they'll probably get off, but she doesn't know that) - and nobody deserves to have their husband killed by a drunk Indian. Nobody.

Poor martyred Saint Abraham is about as mythical a figure as there is in American folklore. John Ford's much-admired (but highly fictionalized) portrait brings humanity to the legend. It does this chiefly by showing the young Mr. Lincoln as he was, not the legend but the man. And damned if this man wasn't the most perfect individual to ever walk the Earth since God's Own Son. There is a good chance actually that Abraham Lincoln may have been an angel masquerading in human form and not a man at all. You see, Young Mr. Lincoln is a film about truth, not facts.

If you believed Lincoln was conscious of race, or that race even existed in the world where he developed a moral conscience (outside of drunk Indians killing nice old lady's husbands), you sir would be mistaken. There is simply no room for race in Lincoln's complicated ethical quandary where he must choose between defending two innocent men accused of murdering an a-hole (who, truth be told, was in need of little killin') and...not defending them. Okay, Sophie's Choice it isn't, but we are reminded of a certain Meryl Streep picture when mom is asked in court to finger which son stuck a knife in the murdered man (setting one brother free and sending the other to the gallows). Fortunately, she's shielded from certain psychic harm when another character intervenes on her behalf, saving the proverbial day. And that character's name just happens to be included in the title of this very picture. Afterward, he spread his angel wings and took flight.

Overall, the film has the feel of a Star Wars: Episode I for Civil War reenactors, existing for the purpose of revisiting characters/people we know and love, but you know... they're younger this time around. Look, there's Stephen Douglas, Abe's future political rival. And there's Mary Todd Lincoln, except she's just Mary Todd because they haven't gotten married yet (and she's a hottie - Honest Abe, you sly dog). What, no chance meeting with John Wilkes Booth while hunting for beaver pelts? How about a rail-splitting contest between Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, bragging rights and a crumpled five-dollar bill to the winner?

I look forward to the sequel - the one with the guns, Pickett's Charge, and black people.

Interesting footnote: Film pioneer Sergei Eisenstein was a massive fan of Young Mr. Lincoln, so much in fact that he wrote a rather gushing essay about it. "Of all American films made up to now, Young Mr. Lincoln is the one I would wish, most all all, to have made." It's likely Eisenstein based much of his own Ivan the Terrible, Part I on Lincoln.

5 out of 5 stars A simple reticent man with a big heart for justice and community.......2006-07-11

In John Ford's Directorial debut, Young Mr. Lincoln succeeds in every aspect of delivering a true poignant memorable and serene film about One of America's greatest Presidents. Mr. Lincoln played by Henry Fonda is a simple yet caring man capable of hiding his ambitious desires for natural law and community. Being a novice lawyer in a small minded town is not easy as Mr. Lincoln breaks up infuriated mobbs, and gives every bit of solace and tranquility to those in need. He is not stern or condescending in the least bit as he reaches out to anyone in need of assitance with pure sincerity. Within in each frame of exterior shots of the Ilinois landscape it only enhances Lincoln's bond with nature as he gazes and reflects onto his favorite river. Abraham Lincoln being long deceased and gone has not at all in any regards disrupted my bond with this great American president. It is as though you are viewing an historical figure that lives in our present time period. Mr. Lincoln even at the most strenous and tense moments (Court Room Scene) is able to contribute a calm and scerene atomsphere with his gleeful relaxed humor. As usual I am ever so grateful to the Criterion Collection for establishing such a presitgious and artful collection because this film derserves every bit of praise and recoginition. A true Gem for any Criterion or history Aficianado...

4 out of 5 stars John Ford myth-making about a young Illinois lawyer, but effective and beautiful to look at.......2006-07-05

At one level I liked Young Mr. Lincoln a lot. The film is a black-and-white picture postcard to look at, with immaculate framing and carefully selected imagery to extend the visual idea of early America. It's also a remarkable example of Hollywood myth-making, laying on with a trowel the nobility, natural shrewdness, sensitivity and common-man origins of the man who became a myth. Plus it brings out all the John Ford sympathies for the honesty and goodness of hard-workin' folks. I found myself unmoved by the reverential attitude of the movie; I felt a hymn was always playing in the background, and, sure enough, a hymn, or something close enough, starts playing at the end. With all the research and excellent books about Lincoln around nowadays, with all that we've come to learn about the man, I can't help but think that Lincoln would be smiling if he saw this film.

Yet, it's effective as all get out in portraying a myth we want to believe about American life on the frontier and of the man who became our greatest president. There's not a scene in the movie where Ford doesn't fail to effectively stress a simple emotion, like love, humor, longing, honesty and doubt. He cleverly demonstrates in many scenes, particularly in the courtroom, Lincoln's shrewdness. Lincoln consistently outwits others, whether in a tug-o-war, with a man's name, selecting a juror, facing down a mob or trapping a murderer. He might use a request to sample some turnip greens because he's hungry, but he really wants a reason to ask a woman in private to tell him a secret she cannot say in front of others.

Henry Fonda, even with a false nose, gives a myth-making performance, himself. Lincoln's homespun nobility is emphasized by Ford with such an unrelenting consistency that I think only Fonda's innate likeabilty and skill make it interesting. Lincoln's ambition and ability to move a crowd his way are only alluded to, but Fonda shows us (and so does Ford) that there was iron in Lincoln's soul.

The movie is a beauty to look at. I don't know how many times we see someone, especially Lincoln, on a hill posed against a cloudy sky, with a tree framing the shot, but it works every time. The lengthy vignettes in the first half of the movie showing us the down-to-earth delights of the Fourth of July celebration -- the tug-o-war, the pie contest -- is pure corn, pure John Ford, and still purely effective in making us think there might really have been a time like this -- just like this -- in our history. Who knows, I'm sure there was.

The Criterion presentation is excellent. Included in the case is a 27-page booklet with essays on Lincoln and Ford. The extras on the second disc contain, among other items, a profile on Ford and a lengthy interview with Fonda.

I watched this movie on the Fourth of July, and was reminded that 180 years ago, also on the Fourth, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died...on the fiftieth anniversary of their signing the Declaration of Independence.

--Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, but the ending??.......2006-04-02

I ordered this movie after having a close friend recently diagnosed Bipolar to see how Richard Gere portrayed a Bipolar patient. As several other reviewers said, his performance is outstanding. The professional consequences of Lena Olin's having become romantically involved with a patient also impressed me as being accurately depicted, no licensed mental health professional in reality, (at least in most states) can become romantic with a patient without serious consequences, and I am glad this movie at least partially dealt with that. Certain parts of Richard Gere's performance when he was in the depressive part of his bipolar, brought tears to my eyes, as well as the performance of the young woman who played Lena Olin's Asian mental patient. It was not only the actress's performance but how her (too) small part in the movie played out that was touching. But the end of the movie? A total cop out on the part of the writers. I won't give it away, but I felt that there was no resolution at all as to whether Richard Gere was ever going to become stable. It was as if the writers said "well, we're running out of time, how can we wrap this up in 8 more minutes?" (the movie runs 114 minutes) All I could think about this ending was "WTF? THIS is how they chose to end it?" I give it 4 stars and not 5, because the whole movie was great up until this ending which I felt left too many loose ends.

3 out of 5 stars no title.......2006-02-24

By the director of "Stormy Monday", which I thought a much better film. I didn't think this was that good; but Richard Gere's performance is a marvel. He has really grown here. Unfortunately, Lena Olin was once again too weepy, as she was in Robert Redford's "Havana".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-09

I loved the movie. As an OCD myself, it helped my family & friends understand the disorder. Thank you Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Charming and Romantic.......2004-06-26

This is a pretty good movie I thought. Richard Gere plays Mr.Jones a man who suffers from manic depression who has suicidal tendencies. When I saw it I thought this is one of Richard Gere's best performances in a long time. He really did a great job and it is probably the best acting that I've seen him do in quite awhile. Lena Olin is also very good as the psychiatrist who takes an interest in him both as a patient and in the personal sense. I really liked this movie and have added to my movie collection. It is one of those rare movies that you can see just about anytime. Overall is a good movie but if you need more convincing than that then see it beause of Richard Gere he is excellent in this film and that should be reason enough I think.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent with many funny, touching moments.......2002-06-12

I'm M-D so take that into consideration. Gere doesn't get enough credit for his acting because he has his own persona like John Wayne and critics can't get over this. His is an outstanding performance, trust me. Lena is my favorite actress to watch and listen to so factor that in also. There are just so many funny scenes in this movie! (And a few oddities; Gere is no carpenter--you hammer nails with your wrist, not your arm.) Fun moments: Gere quoting from Alice In Wonderland while playfully teasing Olin's stock psychologist demeanor, the dialogue in and around the car ride, the table tennis sequence is priceless, in fact all of the dialogue between these two excellent actors is worth watching. Two outstanding dramatic moments are 1)the point of Gere's discovery of Olin's prying into his past(and catching him in a chilling lie)and 2)the subsequent confrontation in the rain; this is Olin at her--or anyone's--best...economical and searing. The only major misfire in this movie is the sexual involvement...should have been platonic but this is easily one of Hollywood's best efforts from the 1990s. I bought it. Aaaahhh, Leeena!! Yum

Bernie Mac is perfectly cast in Mr. 3000, a feel-good baseball comedy that capitalizes on Mac's established comedy persona. He plays Stan Ross, veteran first-baseman for the struggling Milwaukee Brewers, who quit the team during a pennant race and, nine years later, discovers that he's actually three hits short of his 3,000 career-hit claim to fame. When he attempts a comeback to correct his record, his selfish past returns to haunt him, along with a former flame (Angela Bassett, who deserves better roles) who's covering Stan's return to baseball for ESPN. It's strictly formula, but the comedy is consistently entertaining, and director Charles Stone III proves that his 2002 sleeper hit Drumline was no fluke, injecting observant details into a very predictable plotline. Easily recommended, Mr. 3000 makes a good double-header with 1989's hit baseball comedy Major League. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 for this pleasant movie.......2006-09-20

What caught my attention for this movie, is thats it pictures a selfish
man that only cares about himself and what happens when a situation changes things around. Its a baseball movie, but not all the movie is played on the field.
I was surprised and did enjoy this film all the way the the ending credits. I recommend this movie if you like smart comedies and not the ones that goes over the edge.

3 out of 5 stars Bernie Mac Is The Saving Grace To What Could Be A Bad Movie.......2006-07-14

Mr. 3000 is a decent film about a washed up baseball player who needs to prove himself again when he discovers he isn't "Mr. 3000" as he thought he was. The story drags in places but overall isn't that bad. If you come into this film with low expectation, you won't feel so disappointed by the end. I'm not saying that this movie is the worst thing ever. I actually thought it was pretty good, but it just doesn't make for a great movie. Luckily, I wasn't expecting an Oscar winning blockbuster film when I started to watch. Once again, the acting and everything is good, the story is just something that has been seen many times in much better films in the past.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Could've Been Better.......2005-11-28

Mr. 3000 is a film about a former baseball player named Stan Ross who was a very good player....AND KNEW IT! His stats was only equaled by his arrogance and flagrant disrespect for the fans, the team that he played for and his fellow baseball players with the exception of his sidekick Bocca.

Once Stan gets 3,000 hits, he quits the team in the middle of the pennant race which leaves lingering bad feelings. Nine years later, a statistical error is discovered and Stan decides to return to the game that he once turned his back on in order to gain those 3,000 hits. He finds, however, that the game he left behind is much different and finds himself at odds with "T-Rex" Pentibaker, a hitter who is very similiar to Stan himself. Add the return of a former love (played by Angela Bassett) and you have a character who has to face himself.

It could've been better in spots but I have to agree with other reviewers that if not for Bernie Mac's performance, it would've totally stunk! Whoever decided to cast him as Stan Ross made the right call. He and Angela, in my view, have been in better films but did great with the material they had in this mildly ammusing but still relevant comedy. I call it relevant because considering all the egos in professional sports and in sports entertainment fields, this could easily be one of our real life sports hero's one day!

Anyway, worth the rent. Would buy only at a reduced price however!

3 out of 5 stars Plesant but predictable.......2005-11-06

A nice little sports/date movie about a self centered ball player who is good and knows it to the point that he is royal pain.

Classic redemption story of both himself and the prima-donna on the club when he rejoins.

Bernie Mac makes the picture and it is worth a watch, don't know if it is worth a buy.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a comedy, but a better film than you might expect. However, too much cussing!.......2005-09-03

I find Bernie Mac engaging and humorous rather than funny in a joke telling sense. Mr. 3000 benefits from this as more of a dramatic movie with funny moments than as a comedy. That the marketing campaign kept emphasizing it was a comedy is probably one of the reasons it did not do so well at the box office. Bernie Mac and the other stars give good performances and, for a sports movie, this has some things to offer. Unlike "Major League", it is not a cartoon.

However, when you say the movie is "Very Funny" right under the title you create an expectation that this movie never intended to deliver. This movie is about a character who gets an unexpected and unwanted second chance to set things right. However, what gets set right isn't exactly what he intended to do when he began the journey. You see, that isn't a premise for comedy although humorous things do happen along the way, it is not a setup for one joke after another.

Stan Ross (Bernie Mac) is an extremely talented hitter who is so in love with his own talents and image that he simply has no clue how this affects his relations with his teammates and the fans. When he hits his three thousandth hit he ends up ripping it out of the hands of the kid who ended up with the ball. The press gets on him after the game and Ross responds by retiring from the game even though his team is in the midst of a championship run. He figures that with his three thousand hits he can't be denied his place in the Hall of Fame.

Nine years later he still isn't in the hall and during his shenanigans to try and swing the public to pressure the voters to put him in the league finds out that three of his hits were double counted. So, Ross figures the only thing to do is to jump in late in the present season to get his three hits. It turns out to not be as easy as he had hoped.

During these weeks we get to see the management's attitude towards the "sanctity" of the game and Ross's own appreciation for what he had so callously walked away from. The end of the movie is not exactly predictable, but very nice.

The problem is that all the swearing in the film (even though there is a very funny series of bits with a Japanese pitcher trying to get Yankee swearing right) and the somewhat frank (but modest) sexuality with Angela Bassett (who is very good in this film) make it a bit hard to justify as a family film. Unless your family cusses and talks about sex openly, I guess.

Better film than you might expect from its box office receipts, but a pitifully misguided ad campaign did set the wrong expectations for the public. And, if they wanted it to be a family film, less cussing and putting in romance for sex would have been better choices.

    Product Description

Stan Ross was a baseball superstar who turned his back on the game years ago when he finally hit 3,000 hits. Years later, he's now a successful, self-made entrepreneur whose many businesses revolve around his title: Mr. 3000. But a clerical error has proven that Stan is just short three hits of his spectacular hit record. Now, with time on his side and the potential to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Stan must return back to the game and get back his title. But things have changed with age, and as Stan finds out, it's not too easy to get back into the game when he hasn't played for years, and he's nearing 50.

Inventive, tuneful retelling of The Wind in the Willows by filmmaker Terry Jones (Erik the Viking), and costarring many of his Monty Python pals. The film relies on creative dramatics and subtle costumes to show the human actors playing the various animal characters. We follow Mr. Mole (Steve Coogan), whose home is destroyed by a feisty band of weasels who want to make over the peaceful "wild wood" for economic means. Rat (Eric Idle) and the noble Badger (Nicol Williamson) are enlisted to help, but the rich and foolish Mr. Toad (Jones) and his enthusiasm for automobiles--and his ability to wreck them--soon lay waste to his friends' noble efforts. Python members Michael Palin and John Cleese have small roles as, respectively, the all-knowing Sun and Mr. Toad's lawyer. Three-time Oscar winner James Acheson (The Last Emperor) provides the delightful costumes and production design. The film is not as fun as ex-Python member Terry Gilliam's creative films (Time Bandits) but this is one of those films that deserves an audience. It languished for two years, with only very limited release in U.S. movie theaters. As with Time Bandits, the PG rating is for shenanigans and comic gunplay. --Doug Thomas
