Sex and Lucia engages mind and body with its time-bending narrative and images of beautiful Spaniards having vibrant sex. The story shifts between past and present, fact and fiction, so a plot summary won't capture it, but… A young writer named Lorenzo falls into a passionate relationship with a waitress named Lucía. But he also finds himself drawn to a young nanny taking care of a child who just might be the result of an anonymous fling Lorenzo had with a woman he met on an island the year before. Lorenzo fantasizes about the lives of all of these women until a horrific event sends him into a suicidal depression. This may sound obscure or flat, but Sex and Lucía unfolds clearly and beautifully, featuring stunning visual images of both nature and flesh, and weaving a poetic spell much like the director's previous film, The Lovers of the Arctic Circle. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-13

It definately kept your interest. Mainly because it was hard to follow and the story is so strange that you just had to see what was happening next.

4 out of 5 stars Eroticatic-.......2007-01-10

A very romanic and very erotic movie. Paz Vega is one of the most beauitful actress to come along in years, and has moved into the mainstream of movie making. The story is a wondrous love story. I would recommend it for adults.

5 out of 5 stars What is all about beyond intimacy?.......2006-07-19

This dramatic movie exposes many sex activities. Beyond all that, what is the message to send for the viewer? "Do you want to have wild sex with strangers?" Or "do you want to have intimacy sex with your lover?" With all the sex enjoyment, love and "blood" relationship is the final count after all. This is the destiny but not up to our choice. This is why Lorenzo falls into suicidal depression. This is why Lorenzo bursts into sorry tears to Comandrona. This is why Lucia rejects Tony's sex even there is a strong indication of sex enjoyment. Are these sex activities necessary? Let's look at it in different way. Can the movie have same visionary and emotional impacts without sex scenes? The answer is clear. Overall I enjoy this move very much, even have a shock for many days.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-07-05

In a word this movie was disappointing. It's supposed to be about beautiful Spaniards having sex on a magnificent Mediterranean island. Well there wasn't that much sex and the photography was nothing special. Add that to a plodding pace and poor plot and you don't get a very good film

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!! .......2006-07-02

"Put a lot of sex in it; that's always nice," Lorenzo (protagonist of this film) is advised about his novel-in-progress. "Sex and Lucia," which contains stories within stories within stories, unpacks this claim, showing that sex is not always "nice," but that like narrative it can be liberating and transformative.

Tragedy and betrayal lie at this film's heart, but because its story bends and twists around as it follows Lorenzo's false starts and revelations as a writer (it has, as it explains, a hole at the center which the audience, like the characters, can fall through) it also offers a way out -- a way to distinguish voyeurism and pornography from love and art, a way to stay faithful to a vision of human trust and imagination.

Brilliantly accomplished, "Sex and Lucia" displays the loveliness and ample talent of its stars, especially the beautiful Paz Vega (as Lucia) and Tristan Ulloa (as Lorenzo). A tremdous film!

This film has it all and i mean it all. Porn, gore, horror, what more do you want for entertainment. Great film.

3 out of 5 stars sleazy zombie cheesefest.......2007-02-08

joe damatos erotic nights of the living dead is another one of those italian trashy exploitation zombie flicks that while quite enjoyable is still flawed. the film is about a hotel tycoon who wants to build a new hotel on a carribean island. the island just so happens to be filled with walking corpses who dont want their home to be used for the hotels. as you can probably guess by now, the hotel guy and his group soon fall prey to the zombies. erotic nights isnt all that bad if you enjoy cheesey italian films but everyone else should beware. the film is very cheesy and the acting, special effects, dubbing and overall look of the film is pretty low quality. also the film is pretty boring and dull until the final zombie attack at the end. leading up to that part we have an un-erotic hardcore sex scene and a few cheesy simulated scenes. if your patient through the tedious sex than you will enjoy the films zombie filled climax. a good film for fans of italian horror, just dont expect the best of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Laura Gemser fan.......2007-01-07

Would have given it a '5' except for the video quality. But Laura Gemser shows her assets and that is why I bought this!

1 out of 5 stars Horror? More like "Horrible".......2006-09-01

Well I am a collector of zombie movies and I do own some real stinkers such as Zombie Lake, Revenge of the Dead, to name a few, but boy this one was a huge disappointement. All of the other reviews are true, it is so bad you will find yoursef hitting the chapter skip button. I knew not to expect much going into it, but I didn't think it would be this horrible. If you are looking for zombies, you will not find satisfactions here. There are a few scenes where you see these ultra lame zombie wannabes, very weak. If you get the unrated edition and want it for the porn you will find a lot, but you will find yourself getting tired of it quick. There are so many porn scenes that it seems they were just trying to add them in, made me lose interest in the movie immedeately as it got old. I would not recommend buying this. Buy something else and steer clear off of this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of Joe D'Amato's best...........in the Zombie category........2006-08-20

First things first......this is a Joe D'Amato (Aristide Massaccesi) Zombie Classic. Any one who is a Joe D'Amato fan knows that in all of his films with an exception of a few the he mixes Sex and Horror together. So don't by his movies if you do not like movies like this.

A hotel developer purchases a cursed tropical island where he plans to build a luxury resort. Arriving on the god-forsaken island he finds opposition in the worm infested, flesh eating, walking corpses as they begin to rise from their graves.

Exotic Laura Gemser (BLACK EMANUELLE, EMANUELLE AND THE CANNIBALS, VIOLENCE IN A WOMAN'S PRISON) plays a sexy and mysterious apparition, who warns of grave danger! Among the rarest of all zombie/cannibal/sex films, this Joe D'Amato masterwork is full of gore, steamy eroticism, and an apocalyptic cannibal-zombie climax flesh feast you won't soon forget!

Joe D'Amato (Aristide Massaccesi) was born on December 15, 1936, in Rome and died in Rome, Italy because of a heart attack. The last film that D'Amato was working on was a movie called PLANKTON (1995). That was supposed to be about a group of young divers become infected with a 'virus' which results in rape and bloody mayhem.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead (Sexy Night of the Living Dead) originally was supposed to be a strait forward Horror film. But the producer told Joe to put the Sex, Orgasms, threesomes in there to spice it up.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead is an Erotic Horror film. It even states tat on the back of the box. If you don't like the version with all the Sex, Orgasms, threesomes then just buy the Cut version also by Shriek Show.

If you liked this title then you will like Joe D'Amato's (Aristide Massaccesi)other Zombie Horror Classic, PORNO HOLOCAUST also released by Shriek Show/Media Blasters under their Expliotation label company Expliotation Digital. It is the infamous sleaze/horror 'classic' from Joe D'Amato. That Stars infamous cast of EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD; George Eastman, Dirce Funari, Lucia Ramirez and Mark Shannon, join Annj Goren (Unleashed Perversions of Emanuelle, Black Orgasm) in this notorious Italian cult shocker!

In Porno Holocaust, A group of scientists visit a deserted island to search for a native who's reportedly been exposed to nuclear fallout. Unaware that a sex-crazed, cannibalistic, radioactive monster walks among them they are stalked and attacked by the, zombie mutant. This insatiable creature explicitly rapes and then disembowels the females, who die horrible deaths after being inseminated with its radioactive sperm.
This is one of Joe D'Amato's strangest, wildest, and sleaziest films!

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie I have ever seen.......2006-10-28

I was forced to give it a star but it does not deserve any. It is slow and boring, the only time you stop yawning is to turn into disgust. It is a waste of time and a shame for the good Colombian movie makers.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, unpleasant, but definitely worthwhile........2006-10-02

I am not sure how much of this film is autobiographical and how much is fiction. I do know that Fernando Vallejo, the novelist who wrote the novel "Our Lady of the Assassins" as well as this film's screenplay, is a reknowned Colombian author who, like the Fernando in this film, spent much of his life in voluntary exhile. (In the real Fernando's case, the exhile was in Mexico and Italy). In another series of novels Vallejo has written extensively about the difficulties of growing up gay in Colombia, so there is a possibility that in the novel and film versions of "Our Lady of the Assassins" we are getting glympses of his own life experience coming back to Medellin as a middle-aged man.

Both the film and the novel present a touching but in many ways distasteful romance between an affluent older man and an underaged hustler/hired killer from the Medellin underclass. Neither the film nor the novel pass judgment on the relationship, but both make the viewer/reader squirm. There is the obvious question of poor youth being exploited by an older man. Additionally, the older man is an unapologetic snob, a hedonistic social-darwinist whose contempt for the indigent around him reflects very poorly on the Colombian bourgeoisie. The younger man, beneath the angel face, is nihilistic and an apparently uncritical respository of crass international pop culture. The duo's comments about their lives and their meanderings through Medellin depict a very sick society--a portrait that is the thrust of Vallejo's novel.

Other commentors on this webpage suggest that they do not find the wanton violence in this film credible. Unfortunately, the press reports on life in Bogota and Medellin (particularly the latter, as one of the capitals of the cocaine cartels) bear out Vallejo's portrait. So, too, do the stories of many affluent Colombians who have emigrated to Miami in order to escape violence. And sadly, the literature and films about slum children from other large Latin American cities--Pixote (Sao Paulo), Los Olvidados (Mexico City), Amores Perros (Mexico City)--touch on similar themes [See the recent Colombian novel "Satan", by Moreno, which is a portrait of Bogota gone to hell]. This is an unpleasant, painful portrait--and we are seeing the portrait through the eyes of people who are alternatively sympathetic and horrible. But the portrait is probably realistic, as are our guides.

The deliberate use of unsophisticated cameras in this film add to the feeling of cinema verite and enhance the film's impact. All in all, this is an impressive undertaking, and the film goes beyond the novel in engendering dispair over the well-being of Colombia.

    3 out of 5 stars Gallow's Humor.......2006-09-28

Some films have a sadistic streak, and the director of "Our Lady of the Assassins" has shown his with this absurdly ghoulish film. I cannot believe that life in Colombia is this hellish. The story is interesting but is so outlandish. As another reviewer said, many of the random killings are spurred on my stupid insults and complaints about bad service. It is not credible to think a young man could gun down two men on a train in broad daylight and just waltz away nonchalantly.
As far as the acting is concerned, this was a one man show. The progatonist--the writer who's come home--is clever and played decently. The other characters serve as an audience to his quick wit and as the link between the civilized world (the writer) and the violent, savage one (the two boys he has a relationship with). As another reviewer wrote, the symbolism is really heavy handed and propelled this film quickly into the realm of total absurdity.
That being said, I did find it entertaining in a ghoulish sort of way.

5 out of 5 stars Our Lady of the Assassins.......2006-09-21

If you enjoy independent films, you will certainly like this film. It is about life as a displaced youth of Columbia. Unlike the displaced youth of the U.S., they are on their own without any significant assistance. It is very sad, as this is an adaptation of the true story of Alexis. In the areas of the world where illegal drug producers force the disadvantaged youth into terrible life styles, there should be country mandated advocacy for the youth that are unwittingly manipulated.

    1 out of 5 stars Shockingly incompetant.......2006-05-25

Wow, this was honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. And this is coming from someone who loves small foreign flicks, whose favorite movie is the similarly-themed City of God. Our Lady of the Assassins may not be the worst movie I have ever seen, but it certainly the most incompetant. I can't stress enough how bad this movie is. I kept watching out of sheer wonder that anything could be this terrible. This film fails on so many levels that it is hard to list, but I'll give it a try:

First, the acting is gawd-awful. The actors are all unpofessionals, and it shows. They stiffly spout unconvincing dialogue; at every moment, we are aware that they are acting. Not once in the entire movie does it lose the feeling of a middle-school drama class. There is absolutely no romantic chemistry between the leads either; its almost painful to watch.

Oh, what next? How about the plot? Oh wait, there is no plot. The protagonists wander aimlessly throughout the city spouting nilihistic diologue that would have felt stale in Waiting for Godot, all the while shooting random people. That's it. The screenwriter mixes this bland existentialism with some of the most cheesy love lines ever set on film. Here's a sample: "What do you wish for?" "That we could be together forever!"

While the movie pounds its pretentious despair into your head, the incompetant direction undercuts this theme at every turn. The killing scenes are so poorly acted and coreographed that they become hilarious. The camara work is a dead ringer for a cheesy low-budget soap opera. Apparently the director is an industry veteran, which makes me feel like he must have this movie purposefully awful; but a bad movie is still a bad movie. Here's a tip: If you want us to buy into your grandiose existential themes on society, don't shoot yourself in the foot by filming a hilariously bad script with wooden actors and high school musical production values.

Before I go into my review I would like to state not to waste your money buying the Pyscho Killer 3 pack from Shriek Show that features this movie, Delirium, and House on The Edge of The park Why??? This movie is the stand out of the three, and you can probably score the movie alone by it's self for a cheap price.

I first seen the trailer for Beyond The Darkness on my Eaten Alive (Another Great Movie) DVD and I found it to be very intriguing, I jumped on Amazon to see what I could dig up on the movie, and I heard nothing but bad things about gem, so I decided to give it chance, and trust me this movie does not dissapoint, the one false claim I read was there is not enough gore, or blood in this movie FALSE!!!! This movie has all of that and then some, it starts off pretty light but then it just goes from one atrocity to another. If you are on the fence about purchasing this classic, do it you will not be dissapointed.

This movie is high up on my list of all time great horror movies.

It has everything: love, jealousy, revenge, sexuality, and ghosts

A lot of these Italian horror movies seem to borrow ideas from Psycho.

    4 out of 5 stars a morbidly romantic gorefest.......2006-09-30

this film is very special to me. the reason is that it was one of the first italian horror films i'd seen. i had seen burial grounds, zombi 2 and eaten alive before i had seen this gem. at first i was kind of dissapointed, only because i was not expecting the kind of film that beyond the darkness is. its a grim, dark, sleazy, morbidly romantic gorefest. its the story of a rich taxydermist whos wife has died from a voodoo curse set upon her by the rich guys housekeeper iris out of jealuosy. horribly depresed, the man takes his wifes corpse from the cemetary and does what he does best. he removes her entrails, puts fake eyes in her sockets and drys her out, just as he would do to one of the animals he stuffs and sells, so he can have her forver. the rest of the film consists of thae man and his house keeper trying to keep the preserved corpse a secret. that means killing anyone who may jeoprodize their secret. this film would have got 5 stars if it moved a little faster. there are only a few gore seens and it takes a while to get to them. the film is kind of like a slasher movie on some parts, but then switches to pure depraved gore. the gore scenes in the film are as follows. the man taxiderming his wife is a real stomach churner. a chubby hich hiker has her finger nails riped off an his then chopped into peices and dissolved in a tub of acid. a jogger has a chunk of her neck bit out by the taxidermist and is then burned in a furnace while shes still alive. besides that theres your standard bloody violence. worth owning if your a euro horror fan.

    3 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2006-09-19

I was really suprised that I liked this film, I was expecting to stop watching it either because it was too violent or too stupid. However, I made it all the way through and I am going to add this film to my permanent DVD collection. There were some gory moments, but nothing TOO extreme. What I felt was way more impressive is how atmospheric this film was, especially in a living room setting. The musical score by Goblin was excellent and really gives this film a nice kick to it. Dare I say I found this film 'entertaining' despite it's icky subject matter? Absolutely!

4 out of 5 stars acid bath anyone?.......2006-06-05

the story dragged at times but the violence and twisted subject matter had me addicted. i'll save the details for those who choose to view it, but the movie contains female fingernail removal by plyers, cannibalism, some necro-love, and a nice evisceration scene.

the only complaint i have is the dubbing. i dont know when (or if) these companies will realize people talking over what is really being said really ruins the whole experience for me and tons others.

overall: watch it if you like Nekromantik, Aftermath, or just some good old horror/erotica for freaks.

3 out of 5 stars OK but not great nudie cutie.......2004-10-05

Dr. Sex is a pretty good nudie cutie type movie from the 60s. A bunch of psychiatrists (who obviously need psychiatric help themselves) discuss their unusual case histories of patients with unusual sex disorders. What follows is a bunch of outrageous episodes. Wanda was disappointing. The movie has a great beginning with a guy looking into the window of a curio shop at figurines of beautiful nude women in various poses. As the titles roll the figurines are replaced by real nude women in those poses. Unfortunately, the movie never lives up to the promise of that great beginning. Wanda and her live-in girlfriend are OK but not really hot looking babes who live in a big house with a big pool in southern California. Wanda has some hypnotic ability and the two women like to waylay men and then bring them back to the house and play mind games, etc. Eventually they release the victim unharmed when they grow bored. They capture a guy and then play around a while. Some friends come over and then join in the mind games. Wanda tells a hypnotized lesbian that she is a man-hungry nymphomaniac. She has a hypnotized Mary Kay Cosmetic lady perform a striptease, etc. An inmate from the local funny farm escapes and makes his way to the house where he releases the current victim and the two men then proceed to play some games of their own with the captured bunch of women. That's about it. It was OK but not as good as I expected. The Toy Box and the Godson were much better SMV DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun.......2004-02-23

After Kiss Me Quick, Dr. Sex is the best nudie cutie film I've seen. In Dr. Sex, a trio of sex therapists share humourous, Twilight Zone style stories about their patients. Unlike most nudie cutie films, there is a lot of genuinely funny storytelling amongst the cheesiness. Dr. Sex is also noteworthy for being the first film made by Ted Mikels.

The print is not great, but apparently there will never be a better one (Something Weird used the only known surviving print of the film), and it is still extremely watchable. The biggest problem is that a short section is missing from the third story (told by a serious, skeptical psychiatrist). The psychiatrist sets up the patient's problem, and his patient is shown putting his solution to practice, but part of the exposition between the two scenes in which the psychiatrist apparently recounts his advice is missing. This missing portion appears to be no more than 5 to 10 seconds, and is not essential to the story. Thankfully Something Weird has preserved the vast majority of this worthwhile film.

Wanda is not as strong (it plays like a second rate Harry Novak film) but is still an interesting historical curiosity. The DVD is rounded off by nudie cutie shorts of varying quality. "Jane on a Train", which I've already seen on another SW DVD, and which will be included on the Best of Burlesque DVD as well (someone must love it!) has some interesting special f/x, but my favourite is the extremely surreal "Handyman" which takes place at an apartment building straight out of a David Lynch film.

Among the rarest of all zombie/cannibal/sex films, this Joe D'Amato masterwork is full of gore, steamy eroticism, and an apocalyptic cannibal-zombie climax flesh feast you won't soon forget!

3 out of 5 stars "Imagine you're aiming at baby Jesus.".......2006-06-07

In the Peruvian film, "Don't Tell Anyone" Joaquin Camino (Santiago Magill) doesn't exactly fit his father's notions of masculinity, so his father drags the teenager off on a day trip designed to bring out his son's inner brute. It's a sad commentary that being a man is supposed to be about shooting, killing and brutalizing, but that's exactly what Joaquin's dad thinks. The trip is a disaster--Joaquin is paired off with a handyman's Indian son, and while they're supposed to be hunting, Joaquin's advances towards the other man are rebuffed in horror. But all this escapes the notice of Joaquin's father; they return to the city, and in his father's eyes at least, Joaquin's day somehow serves as a rite of passage into manhood.

Joaquin then goes to university where he meets fellow student Alejandra (Lucia Jimenez). While Joaquin's religious, protective mother is delighted to see her son involved with a girl from a good family, the relationship is fraught with problems. He meets Gonzalo (Christian Meier), the fiance of Alejandra's best friend, and they begin a secret relationship. Gonzalo argues that he loves his fiancee and intends to get married, and he seems to find it perfectly normal to live this double life with Joaquin on the side.

Joaquin tries to come to terms with Peruvian society's attitude towards homosexuality. His male friends accept these secret relationships between males that are coupled with marriage to acceptable, desirable woman and also contrasted to violent, public homophobia. Joaquin, unable to juggle all these opposing moralities, finally leaves Peru and dives into Miami's seamy side.

The film addresses many of the hypocrisies associated with Peruvian society's attitude towards homosexuality, and also ties in this attitude with prevalent racist attitudes towards the Indian population. However, Joaquin is not a particularly sympathetic character, and ultimately the film's conclusion seems ambiguous. From director Francisco J. Lombardi, the film "Don't Tell Anyone" is in Spanish with English subtitles--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars Coming Out Is So Very Hard To Do.......2005-12-20

'No Se Lo Digas A Nadie' ('Don't Tell Anyone') is probably a good PR line for this little film trying to be something grand. In excess of two hours director Francisco J. Lombardi makes an attempt to bring to life the autobiography of gay Peruvian talk show host Jaime Bayly and to explore the angst of teenagers and college students finding their way into the adult world. What results is a soap opera treatment that wades around in a lot of self-pity and wrong choices.

Joaquin Camino (Santiago Magill) struggles as a child with his terrible secret of attraction to boys in a home atmosphere of a macho homophobic father and a religious zealot mother. He tries girls, even a graduation gift prostitute compliments of his father, but he is unable to 'be a man' and after high school runs away from home. In college he mixes with the marijuana and cocaine crowd, unsuccessfully attempts physical affection for his girlfriend Alejandra (Lucía Jiménez) but eventually falls in love with a closet case to end all closet cases Gonzalo (Christian Meier) who runs when Joaquin makes it clear he is available for a relationship. This is the manner of the tale which eventually resolves in demonstrating how many young people hide their true identities behind alcohol and drugs and the fast life: the story as expected has no real ending because of the lack of ultimate character definition.

The cast is fairly strong, especially Santiago Magill, and they try to make the best of a thin script. Production values fit the mood of the film and there are some fine little moments that justify watching it. In the long run the movie seems to be afraid to offend anyone and that fear keeps it from being bold enough to make a clear statement about human sexuality. Perhaps this is because the film it is from a Latin American culture (Peru), but basically it is a lost opportunity. Grady Harp, December 05

      4 out of 5 stars Impresionantes actuaciones.......2004-06-26

3 out of 5 stars strangly enough, in a sense a bit homophobic.......2004-05-23

I'm not going to write a complete review of this DVD, the previous reviews already give a lot of information. Joaquin, the main character of this movie, is bisexual but with a preference for men. Then why is it that his first heterosexual encounter with a woman is shown quite explicitely, and his first homosexual encounter with a man is hardly shown at all? And this happens more often in this movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for a gay porn movie. However when the main character of a movie is predominantly gay, then it is a bit silly if his gay encounters are hardly shown at all, and his heterosexual encounters are shown lengthy and explicitely. The love scenes are important for the movie, but then homosexual encounters and heterosexual encounters should have been shown with equal explicity. The movie now feels rather unbalanced in this respect, and makes it much more difficult to understand the feelings of Joaquin.

3 out of 5 stars Cheerless film rails against bigotry and oppression.......2004-05-22

DON'T TELL ANYONE [No se lo Digas a Nadie] (Peru/Spain 1998): An unhappy young Peruvian man (Santiago Magill) clashes with his affluent, god-fearing parents as he struggles to come to terms with his attraction to other men in a country steeped in hypocrisy and prejudice.

An understanding of the macho culture which underpins Peruvian society is a prerequisite for viewers of Francisco J. Lombardi's DON'T TELL ANYONE, an apparently sanitized version of the bestselling book by chat show host Jaime Bayly. Hot young TV star Santiago Magill (The Most Beautiful Man In The World - official!) plays the central character as a deeply confused individual who wants to conform but is unable to deny his true sexuality, despite the attentions of a sympathetic girlfriend (Lucia Jimenez) who believes she can make him 'normal' again. Inevitably, Magill goes off the rails and forfeits his education before descending into coke-fuelled abandon and fleeing to Miami. Unable to escape his past, he's forced to compromise the very essence of his humanity...

Lombardi's cheerless film shakes an angry fist at the influence of religious doctrine in Peru (revealed here as a sham) and the racism suffered by the country's native Indian population, an anger shared by the movie's principal character, who rails against the very same bigotry and oppression which stifles his freedom at every turn. His slide into rebellion makes for uncomfortable viewing (Magill gives a powerhouse performance as the delicate, pretty-boy waif who gravitates toward anarchy and emerges a strong - though embittered - survivor), but it's also faintly predictable, given the terrible circumstances under which he is forced to exist. Magill is pleasingly nude in a number of scenes, though gay viewers may be alarmed by the emphasis placed on his relationship with Jimenez, who thinks he's merely suffering a 'trauma' and can be cured by having sex with a woman (it's no surprise to learn that director Lombardi is straight), while his relationships with men are depicted as fragile and fleeting, primarily because his male partners are under the same societal pressures as himself. Unable to indulge his true sexuality, Magill's character seems doomed to a life of unhappiness and deceit, an approach which distinguishes the film from its feel-good American counterparts. Technical credits are polished, and the cast is exemplary, but it's hard to enjoy this bleak little movie, and even harder to dismiss it.

The DVD from Picture This! is fair enough, though this is yet another gay movie whose theatrical Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack has been downmixed to 2.0 surround for its US disc release. Picture quality may suffer on larger monitors and colors are a little heavy (which may have been part of the film's original color scheme), but it's generally OK. A trailer for this film is included, along with previews for other gay-themed movies from Picture This! The 114 minute running time quoted on the packaging is a mistake.
