Description
The people of New York City face certain death. Dr. Nora Hart has five days to save them. Kate Jackson ("Charlie's Angels") stars as Dr. Nora Hart in this shocking story that finds modern-day New York City threatened by a disease more devastating than AIDS, cancer and heart disease combined. A killer so powerful that it could destroy the city's entire population in five days--unless Dr. Hart can stop it.

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold's outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who's grown immune to her strange son's antics. Gradually, however, the film's clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won't appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen. --Jeff Shannon

one more person willing to love this film.......2007-06-27
Ok, so like 272 people have had wonderful things to say about this film and what more could I possibly add to the discussion? This movie has over the years fed my soul and "reason to be". It is a beautiful reminder that after all the education and family and work stuff there are still other reasons to remain here. To choose to live. As imperfect as it all is. As sad as our mortality can make us. Life has an aspect to it that is so rich, so lovely, so enchanting, so alluring, that, provided we are capable to slowing down long enough to take a good look at it, can be loved and embraced and followed, like a moth following a candle. Finding yourself wasn't just a sixties slogan, it had to do with letting go of those things we think are important, so that we might truly begin to embrace those things that are essential to happines and to life. Harold and Maude is about all that and more. And as Forest Gump once said, "That's all I have to say about that."
Best movie ever........2007-06-24
The more I watch this film the better it gets, so many subtleties. I bought a copy for my brother to show it to his teenage kids.

"Harold and Maude, a Cerebral Love Affair" .......2007-06-11
This is a terrific movie and has been one of my favorites since I first saw it on VHS late last century. Now it is available upon DVD which means it has a very good quality picture reproduction from the celluloid original upon which it was originally recorded and the audio is as good as it was in the theatre. I just need to acquire the audio components upon which to listen to this movie so I can visually and aurally go back in time, also I can watch it over & over and not have to worry about tape degradation. Amazon.com made acquiring this movie a very good and most cost effective endeavor for me; I will be a customer for the rest of my life and encourage friends of mine to shop @ Amazon.com.
Harold and Maude timeless, naughty and quirky..........2007-05-28
Harold and Maude is a movie that brings to light an assortment of social and familial issues. Both actors do an outstanding job of portraying their characters in pure form. Love this movie!

A literate look at an eventual subject.......2007-07-04
I have been captivated by this movie for many years now so the "HD DVD" purchase was just a foregone conclusion. With each viewing I'm totally moved by each actor (even you Quince;) and enthralled that this 3 hour marathon feels shorter than many 2 hour action flicks (like the new Die Hard). Brad Pitt surpasses anything I could have hoped for in the role of Death and this is one of the few times ever in the history of cinema I have seen Anthony Hopkins equaled in a film (but not bested:). The movie 5/5
Sadly, there are (again) no special features that weren't already on the standard def version, in fact the extra's here ARE in standard def which to me is like a slap, with a twenty and a fiver. However since we are dealing with a movie already clocking in at the 3 hour window I can overlook it. The extras 3/5
In closing, the tears are real, the performances are jarringly raw and all this is only heightened by one of the better looking HD DVD releases. Yes, all that glitters is not high definition gold.. or Blu, but in this case an upgrade is not only worth your money it's worth your Kleenex as well. Stock up. The conclusion 5/5

This 1992 black comedy by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Back to the Future trilogy) features some of the most eye-popping special effects of the '90s in its story of a narcissistic star (Meryl Streep) who steals the husband (Bruce Willis) of another woman (Goldie Hawn) and continues her rivalry with her even after death. A magic potion keeps both women going despite the punishment of murderous bullets and fatal plunges, and the joke is that even as they rot they remain vain about appearances. Though he's fashioned a one-note movie, Zemeckis gets a lot of mileage out of such impressive sights as Hawn walking around with a hole in her chest the size of a basketball, and Streep--her head and arms twisted 180 degrees--moving like a broken crab. It's weird, it's sick, it's hilarious, and the stars push the whole project to a classy entertainment. Isabella Rossellini is great as a scantily clad witch who sells the immortality brew. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, optional Spanish subtitles, and Dolby sound. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
One of a kind movie.......2007-07-02
I loved this movie. I had no idea what this movie was about and had never seen any trailer of it. I was thinking "another Meryl Streep's melodrama"; but this crazy movie tickled my brain and belly through out the play time. This is one of a kind movie with great star cast and they all are very very funny. Buy yourself a copy because you will never get tired of this movie.

I loved this movie! I hadn't seen it in years but what a funny movie to look back on. Great investment into a movie collection.
very funny movie.......2007-05-07
this movie is so funny. goldie and merryl streep are hilarious. i wish there was more movies like this. the way madeline's head turns all the other way around is so cool and always wondered how they did that. what a funny movie this was and still is.
I could not wait anymore..........2007-04-21
It is one of the best comedies I`ve ever seen...
Best Potion for youthfulness.......2007-04-13
This is one of the most original films I have ever seen. Meryl, Goldie, and Bruce work well off of each other, which is why the film was a success. Helen and Madeline each woman want Earnest. and they each seek eternal life when they find out about it. Helen and Madeline are both viscious women.
This movie is a dark comedy. very funny. I reccomend this to everyone.

B movie maverick Larry Cohen always enjoyed slipping a little social commentary into his genre pictures, and the satirical sci-fi/horror comedy The Stuff is no exception. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, The Stuff is an insidiously addictive, low-calorie dessert sensation that soon wins the hearts and minds of the nation, but mostly the minds. You see, to borrow a title from another Cohen classic, it's alive.
Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy with questionable ethics and a certain moral flexibility behind his disarming drawl. "No one is as dumb as I appear to be," he informs his newest client, a snack food CEO who wants the secret of The Stuff. Needless to say he becomes the film's hero, a smart-talking everyman battling a compromised FDA and a corporate baddie who sees dollar signs in every Stuff snarfing zombie he converts. Cohen's satirical swipes at consumerism, advertising, and the ethics of corporate profit come fast and furious, if not exactly focused, and help drive the film past his--at times--sloppy direction. Moriarty's energetic performance is hilarious, and his rag-tag crew includes Andrea Marcovicci as an advertising wunderkind (who improbably falls in love with Moriarty), Saturday Night Live alum Garrett Morris as "Famous Amos" parody "Chocolate Chip Charlie," and Paul Sorvino as a commie-hating, conspiracy-spewing militia leader.
The DVD features commentary by Larry Cohen along with trailers and detailed biographies. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Yum, yum more Stuff.......2007-06-30
This classic 80's B movie is really quite entertaining over 20 years later. I first watched this movie when I was a kid and I remember how much it captivated me. It was definately one of my favorites. I recently bought the dvd version. The movie made me nostalgic for the classic B movies that were more common not that long ago. The concept behind this movie is very good. How it's played out is what makes it special.
The story is rather simple. There is somthing bubbling out of the earth. It's not oil it's some strange substance that resembles yogurt. But this substance is odd and causes people to become addicted to it. Although most people can't see any negative side effects. Actually the effects are positive. More energy and the ability to lose weight causes this products popularity to skyrocket.
I will save the story for those who haven't seen it. There is a whole new crowd of teenagers and other B movie watchers who should love it's cheesy acting and subpar special effects. Sometimes it doesn't take a multimilliion dollar budget to make a good film. Sometimes all it takes is a good storyline. This movie is well worth the $5.99 price tag and could easily become a popular title in anyones DVD library. Once you get some of the Stuff you won't be able to resist.
Not Cheesy Enough For Me........2007-06-03
This movie wasnt really what I was expecting.I dont know why its found under a zombie movie category because it has nothing even close to a zombie. The plot is pretty good. Its a good idea and a amazing film considering the budget.I just expected more from it.The 2 or 3 gory scenes it has (Especially Chocolate Chip Charlys' demise) were really really awesome looking.I just expected more from it.Bottom line,I thought the movie drags most of the time.Gets kinda boring.Ill probably never watch it again, but its still worth a look.
Mmmmm, tasty!.......2007-05-14
The Stuff is quite possibly one of the greatest films ever made. Mo Rutherford and Chocolate Chip Charlie are two of cinema's greatest heroes. Although the effects are sometimes of a poor quality, the story, the characters and the acting are (in most cases) fantastic. I read another review that claimed "...no intelligent adult should watch this film". Whoever wrote this should be truely ashamed of this merciless attack on one of the most terrifying and hilarious films ever made. If Mo Rutherford actually existed I'd have him over to their house to sort them out.
My only complaint about the film is that Chocolate Chip Charlie doesn't feature enough. A man with such a cool name should definitely be given a greater role. His immortal line, "My hands are lethal weapons", is one of the greatest pieces of dialogue ever commited to film. Charlie's horrific death was a twist I never seen coming and to this day it haunts my dreams.
So, to summarise: The Stuff is one of the greatest purchases I have ever made. A truely fantastic film that both terrifies and delights in equal measures. Highly recommended.
5 stars for cheese.......2007-01-04
for absolute cheese value only, i give 5 stars.
The storyline is practically non existent, and the acting ability of the cast really should have been questioned back in the 80's, but for a walk down memory lane I couldnt beat it. One of only two "adult" rated films in the UK that I saw before I legally could, so I am slightly biased, but I loved it (the other was Nightmare on Elm St).
Acquire And Consume... .......2006-12-28
Larry Cohen's movies have always been good, schlocky fun. After all, he's the guy behind the great IT'S ALIVE trilogy, Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, and GOD TOLD ME TO. These movies are all packed w/ horror, comedy, weirdness, and Cohen's brand of interesting social commentary. THE STUFF needs to be seen in the same light, as a part of the Larry Cohen collection. It's message of commercial insanity and blind consumer idiocy is even more relevant today than it was in the '80s! THE STUFF is a wonderful metaphor. In this movie it's a totally addictive dessert (like a sweet, gooey version of crack cocaine), but it could stand for any product that we simply can't seem to live without. Ever seen two grown adults fighting over the last Elmo doll or video game console at christmas-time? It's pretty ugly! THE STUFF works because it tells us what we know but don't want to hear, that we are being duped by advertising gurus into buying anything they push on us. We are consumer zombies. Yep, we actually believe the commercials! Cohen's a genius. While THE STUFF is pure B-movie schlock, it's moral is clear: We truly ARE what we eat...
Average customer rating:
- Not scary but it's good, campy fun.

It's sick! It's twisted! It's House of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-office gross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Scream era. While paying homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, this House is definitely worth a visit... if you dare. --Jeff Shannon

Not scary but it's good, campy fun........2007-06-25
This movie is about a group of young people whose car breaks down and they seek help from a group of people who turn out to be a bunch of black magic-practicing murderous rednecks. Sounds familiar? Yeah, it's that cliche plotline made popular by films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". However, Zombie wasn't trying to make a film that was purely unique. It was meant to be a homage to the films he loved and as such the movie is a nice accomplishment. Knowing that he could not match the scares of those classic films, he went for all-out campiness. For this reason, I wouldn't call the film scary, but it sure is fun to watch. The closest comparison that I can think of is "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2", another underrated film.
Some elements are confusing and don't seem to have much to do with the plotline. Seriously, whatever theories are running about, does anyone truly understand how the old African-American man fits into the story? It doesn't matter though. The plot is pretty much secondary anyway. All of these things add to the atmosphere and the fun. You can say the movie is style over substance, but does it ever have style.
Two more comments. For one, I LOVE the opening scene. Maybe it's a sign that I'm a disturbed individual, but that scene cracked me up. He may be a villian, but I love the clown. The scene had a nice mix of humor and gore. I guess those two things can mix. Is that combination a bad influence? Hmmmm...maaaybe.
The other comment: Ring the bell on the menu screen but don't choose an option immediately. The clown pops up and makes a bunch of funny statements about how you won't pick an option or say anything.
(paraphrased) "I take it y'all must be mutes 'cause I know you wouldn't be ****ing with me, now would you? No siree, the last person to **** with me ain't having a real howdy-doody day right now."
(looking at a porn mag) "Oooh-eee, all that and flexible too!"
It has to be said in character for you to see the humor.
rock on rob.......2007-05-17
this is a gem for any horror lover i love the story and that it was set in the 70s
A different type of scary........2007-05-02
I decided to watch this because one of my favorite actresses (Erin Daniels) is in it. Thankfully, I rented it instead of buying it.
I'd put this movie into the same group of scary movies as the Michael Myers movies, the original "The Hills Have Eyes" and, in general, most "older" scary movies in the sense that they are all labeled as horror movies but aren't all that scary. However, this movie is different from other scary movies because it's more creepy and disturbing than scary. There's killing, yes, but the killing is more torturous and humiliating and cult-like than Jason or Myers-type killings. Zombie throws in weird, random shots of naked women and clowns and such. The ending is predictable and the family in the movie is a typical scary movie family but to say that this movie is a typical scary movie is completely false. It's weird. It's creepy. It has bunny costumes. It has people buried alive. It has innocent-looking, evil chicks. It's disturbing. It's different. It's worth a watch.
If you're into scary movies, I'd suggest you watch this just because it's a "different" kind of scary movie. If you generally don't like scary movies, go ahead and skip it. If I could, I would've given this movie 2 1/2 stars instead of 3.
Well-accomplished........2007-04-19
This movie is a weird, very different viewing experience, just like it's meant to be. I don't think anyone can really criticise a movie as self-conscious as this one. It's bad, it's tacky, it's over-the-top horrible so that it almost seems funny, but that's the whole point. It's deliberate exploitation film based on a long history of bad yet strangely fascinating movies.
The intention, it seems, is to create in the viewer something that approaches a sense of delight at how absurd the horror genre can be, though still confusedly mixed with repulsion. This sense of repulsion is something that the viewer is never completely successful at repressing, despite their attempts to find the film purely funny. To seek this sort of combination of feelings is the reason many people still watch tasteless old horror movies, and laugh at them, perhaps subconsciously attempting to conquer their own fears of the possibility of intense pain and terror by turning it into humour. This film deliberately tries to create and play off of that sort of reaction. It emphasises both the humour and the repulsion factors more strongly than the older films it's based on, where this combination was unintentional. Other films have tried this to a certain extent, but with too much emphasis on humour and not enough genuine gruesomeness, making these films merely campy and not nearly so rich in contradictory sentiment as House of 1,000 Corpses.
So if you aren't into that sort of thing you probably can't appreciate where this is coming from, or why anyone would like it. But you're also not the intended audience, so your opinion doesn't count! For what it is, it's a very unique film that does something quite new, and it's surprisingly sucessful.
And personally I think the fish sculpture alone makes the whole movie worthwhile, that scene definitely made my life just a little better.
1 of the best horror films ever! .......2007-04-17
This is 1 of the best horror films ive ever seen. The plot is twisted. Two couples get lost while searching for the infamous Dr. Satan. ALong the way they encounter several horrors that include a bizare group of psycotics. If ur a horror fan like i am, this is essential for ur collection. But if u dont like blood, gore, and vulgar language this is not for u.

A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
So weird, eighties weird........2007-05-16
I bought this movie because it was inexpensive and, randomly, one of the lecturers in my bar exam review course mentioned it in his video lecture. He didn't know how to describe it, but claimed it reminded him of a some of the repo guys he'd met as a property lawyer. I don't really know how to describe it, either. It's sort of "Big Lebowski," but set in the eighties and with less drugs. The characters are all pretty messed up without drugs. It is surreal, and very random. You should give up on the plot and just enjoy the scenes as they come. The plot, such as it is, will work itself out. This is not a movie for people who need to understand things, who need everything to make sense. When I first watched it, I was strung out from studying for two months and didn't want to think any more. For me, it was perfect. Weird, ridiculous, and amusing. If you approach it with a similar attitude, I'll think you'll enjoy. :)
Definitely Alex Cox's Best- Emilio Estevez's, too.......2007-04-19
This movie is truly amazing. It holds up to repeated viewing and I should know, because I've been watching it repeatedly since I bought it around ten years ago. You can just go on and on about the mountainous high points this film has, from Harry Dean Stanton, the western style camera work Alex Cox would later revisit in Straight to Hell, the crackpot philosophizing, the nonsensical alien conspiracy and ensuing government conspiracy, Rev. Larry, the cartoonish punk thugs, seedy Los Angeles, and some other little things like the dialogues ("I installed two ways mirrors in his place in Brentwood"), acting (everyone essentially "disappears into their character"- even the guy from Conan the Destroyer), and the plot.
Worthy release of a CLASSIC.......2007-04-11
I'm not going to try to sell you on this movie, if you don't get why it's a classic, I can't be bothered to try to explain it to you. If you know and love this movie, this release is worth the price - it looks good, the commentary track is lots of fun.
Irradiated.......2007-03-09
When I first saw this movie about 20 years ago I didn't know what to make of it. I was about thirty then. I still don't know, but I do know it has enough merit as a SciFi movie to deserve at least a rental. For someone to associate this as sexist, cruel, sadistic, unholy, or any other negative societal connotation is certainly understandable. It is probably those things because it was meant to be. I doubt saying Hannibal Lechter was a cannibal would surprise the author or director of "Silence of the Lambs". So trying to equate displays of anti-feminist, anti-christian, or anti-social behavior with intelligence is rather moot. The movie is what it is. You will love it or hate it probably. Imagine crossing "Reservoir Dogs" with "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Raising Arizona" with "Snatch" and you begin to understand. You can't fit it in your genre specific box. So if you are open to sub-cultural wacky movies, you may be entertained.
lobotomy.......2007-03-04
This is about the worst movie I've ever seen, and I've seen it twice (just to make sure).
Although I've seen it twice, I can't really tell you what it's about because it is too boring and idiotic to follow. But it was clearly made for people who think that juvenile behavior is "cool".
If you think that men who treat women in an insulting manner are "cool" (and there are a lot of you out there), then you might like this movie.
But if you are a thoughtful and intelligent person, this movie is a waste of time. You've been warned.

There are many remarkable things about the documentary 4 Little Girls. Spike Lee's striking, beautifully realized film is a cinematic lesson of what kind of material is better suited to the documentary format. In his first documentary, Lee shares an attribute of Ken Burns: the major event in his documentary is not seen on camera. Except for four quick glimpses of black-and-white autopsy photos, the picture stays clear from the bombing. Lee remains with the faces, the girls' friends, families, and the historic figures of the era. They've all grown up since the bombing but their memories haven't faded. The vital facts of the case are certainly here: the troubled history of Birmingham, the court proceedings, friends' last run-ins with the girls. What touches us deeper though are those witnesses telling us of living through the core era of segregation and bigotry: a father explaining to his child why she can't have a sandwich in a cafeteria and a woman offering up tears of past events. There's even an interview with George Wallace, the prince of segregation, that belongs in a David Lynch feature. Lee's film asserts the bombing energized the civil rights movement and when the voice of America, Walter Cronkite, echoes those sentiments, you believe he may have it right. --Doug Thomas
Description
From the director of ' 'Do The Right Thing' ' and ' 'Malcolm X' ' comes ' 'a masterpiece.' ' (Chicago Tribune) When a bomb tears through the basement of a black Baptist church on September 15, 1963, it takes the lives of four young girls. This racially motivated crime, sparks the nation?s outrage and helps fuel the civil rights movement sweeping across the country.
Customer Reviews:
Four Little Girls a little lost.......2007-07-03
This is a well presented view of the period and the children who died in Birmingham when the 17th Street Baptist Church was bombed by the KKK. It allows viewers to see the children, their families and the city in which this all happened. As a documentary, it is useful, but selective and moves a bit slowly at times.
History in video.......2007-06-26
Spike Lee has done a super job of sharing a difficult, but important story in the history of the civil rights movement. It is realistic and not romanticized; as one who lived during this period in history, I felt the video was accurate and informative using the "voices" of the people who were involved.
4 LITTLE GIRLS.......2007-05-10
THE MATERIAL IS SECOND TO NONE - SPIKE LEE DID US A SERVICE BY ALLOWING US TO SEE THIS AWFUL TRUTH IN SUCH A BLATANT WAY.....

Great video, Mint Condition.......2007-03-21
I thought the DVD was useful for the classroom. Although, there are some scenes that are a little graphic, it still very much depicts a world where many of our students are unfamiliar with. I used it to make a text- to - world connection with the Drama A Raisin in the Sun.

Meet Joe Black seemed almost fated to fail when it was released in 1998, but this romantic fantasy--a remake of 1934's Death Takes a Holiday--deserves a chance at life after box-office death. Although many moviegoers were turned off by director Martin Brest's overindulgent three-hour running time, those who gear into its deliberate pace will find that Meet Joe Black offers ample reward for your attention.
Brad Pitt plays Death with a capital D, enjoying some time on Earth by inhabiting the body of a young man who'd been killed in a shockingly sudden pedestrian-auto impact. Before long, Death has ingratiated himself with a wealthy industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and pursues romance with the man's beautiful daughter (newcomer Claire Forlani), whom he'd briefly encountered while still an earthbound human. Under the assumed identity of "Joe Black," he samples all the pleasures that corporeal life has to offer--power, romance, sex, and such enticing pleasures as peanut butter by the spoonful.
But Death has a job to do, and Meet Joe Black addresses the heart-wrenching dilemma that arises when either father or daughter (the plot keeps us guessing) must confront his or her inevitable demise. The film takes its own sweet time to establish this emotional crisis and the love that binds Hopkins's semidysfunctional family so closely together. But if you've stuck with the story this far, you may find yourself surprisingly affected. And if Meet Joe Black has really won you over, you'll more than appreciate the care and affection that gives the film a depth and richness that so many critics chose to ignore. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie........2007-06-15
I watched this movie for the first time while surfing through my HD Channels. But I'll admit that I wasn't interested in watching this movie when it was first released or any other time it was available on premium channels. However, more recently I have become more intrigued by Brad Pitt and it's probably because of all the current media hype he's recently received as half of the hottest Hollywood couple. Aside from wanting to see more of Brad and his acting, the picture quality was quite amazing and enough to get me into the movie. Each scene was like still life photography. From the rooms of the Parrish mansion to the boardroom, the color and tone of the set was just beautiful. Even some of the elements such as the cake samples were unique and colorful and lend such timelessness to this film. Although the sound editing put me and my remote to work with its highs (Music) and lows (Voice), the video quality fared much better as HD made for some wonderful viewing, especially of Brad. The early scene of Brad's freak pedestrian accident was so unfortunate, but convincing enough to link him to his Death character. I anticipated every scene and found some scenes and acting a bit quirky (peanut butter), while other scenes, particularly the intimate one, simply enthralling. Needless to say, I became a willing hostage up to the party scene, at which time I had to pull myself away for another urgent commitment. However, I will have to savor the rest and probably the best parts of the film for when I purchase the DVD. I really look forward to viewing it again from beginning and to the very end.
Almost perfect.......2007-06-08
What a cast! Anthony Hopkins his usual professional self and Brad Pitt doing as well. It would have earned a 5 star rating but for the times that the musical background overwhelmed conversations, especially intimate ones. Not a problem if one uses close captioning.
What a beautiful, touching film!.......2007-06-03
Today is the first time I have seen this movie and I must say I am amazed at the depth of the story and the love in the family. I had no idea how deep and moving the story was. Admittedly, I had no interest in seeing this movie when it first came out because I am not a Brad Pitt fan, but I have to admit he puts on an amazing performance in his ability to show his love for Susan through his facial expressions...just breathtaking.
Sir Anthony Hopkins also delivered an amazing performance, as always. Regardless of what role he is playing in a movie, he always manages to take me breath away; I just love him. He is one of few actors in Hollywood would actually enjoy meeting.
Perfect.......2007-05-22
Nevermind what you hear about the length of this film. The beautiful and almost flawless acting on the part of all makes up for it. Especially moving are Brad, Claire and (of course) Anthony Hopkins. Not to forget to mention the music! Awesome! I would watch this movie over and over again. There is almost always something you miss that, when found or realized, makes the movie even more touching and awesome and you are able to appreciate even more the hard work that was put into it. Perfect movie for an evening at home. A true audio/visual conversational masterpeice.

People who cherish the post-Terms of Endearment, post-reincarnation phase of Shirley MacLaine's career might be surprised to discover just how sexy and kooky she was in a past life--that is, the first few years of her movie career. After the triumphs of Some Came Running and The Apartment, MacLaine had a run of starring roles, including this elaborate comedy vehicle. What a Way to Go! cast MacLaine as an unlucky bride whose husbands meet early deaths, leaving her wealthy but unhappy. Gimmick casting of the hubbies adds a bit of dash: Dick Van Dyke as a simple country storekeeper, Gene Kelly as a two-bit entertainer, bearded Paul Newman as a Brandoesque, bohemian painter in Paris. In the movie's best turn, Robert Mitchum gets to play a Howard Hughes character, and Dean Martin and Robert Cummings are around for the ride.
A flabbergasting parade of Edith Head outfits keeps MacLaine hopping, and each segment has a Hollywood fantasy based on MacLaine's vision of her passing marriages (silent comedy, sexed-up foreign flick, splashy musical). Typical of a certain kind of super-production of the era, the film is impressive rather than entertaining, busy rather than funny. Perhaps hiring J. Lee Thompson, who directed The Guns of Navarone, was not the best idea for this Comden-Green script. It snuck in as one of the top ten box-office grossers of 1964, and it has one great surrealist sequence where Gene Kelly orders his house and grounds to be painted entirely pink. --Robert Horton

What a Way to Go!.......2007-04-02
I've seen this movie before and ordered it because it's one of those rare "oldies" that can be watched over and over.....I was tickled to find this on DVD so I can share it with my unfortunate friends that haven't had the privilege of seeing it before. Thank you.
Shirley MacLaine.......2007-02-27
I love comedy and Shirley MacLaine. This movie is enjoyable but i wouldn't say fabulous.
Fun, Funny Movie.......2007-01-18
This movie is full of big name stars, poking fun at the industry in a very fun way. It is a great story that is great to watch over and over. It is also a great gift for people who love all the movies and actors or the 50's.
Wild, mainly agreeable, black comedy which starts on too high a note and fails to sustain..........2007-01-17
Written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and directed by J. Lee Thompson, this super production had elaborate sets, and Shirley MacLaine with six leading men, 72 gowns and 72 hairstyles--all for the purpose of stating that money is the root of all evil!
Like "A New Kind of Love," it's a pathetic pastiche of sex comedy, satire, fantasy and pretentious techniques, which support a one-joke story: a woman wants to live a simple life, but has the "misfortune" to marry men who become millionaires, and who die shortly thereafter, leaving her hopelessly wealthy...
Newman had the good fortune to appear in only a small portion of this disaster... He's the second of five husbands--an American gifted painter who drives a taxi in Paris and has invented a machine that converts sound into oil paintings...
The couple are poor and happy until MacLaine feeds classical music into the machine, resulting in a successful painting... Newman becomes rich, builds more and more machines, and gets so involved in his work (another obsessed artist!) he ignores his wife...
Newman is surprisingly amusing when he talks about art in almost a Graziano voice, and when he "conducts" his machines into a frenzy...
A must see CLASSIC.......2007-01-03
When you have a movie with Shirley Maclaine, Dean Martin, Gene Kelley, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dick Van Dyke and Bob Cummings - it has to be fun. The story is a fun-filled love'em, marry 'em, become rich and successful, and they die tale. The songs and the dancing, not to mention the gorgeous costumes are a real treat! Most men may find this to be a sort of chick-flick, but it's still one for the CLASSIC film buff!

From Keenan Ivory Wayans, the man who brought us Jim Carrey (initially just one of the bunch on Wayans's television comedy-sketch show, In Living Color), comes I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), a comedy spoof on the blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Wayans plays Jack Spade, an army private just returning from the service. He comes home to find his younger brother June Bug dead of a overdose of gold chains (an "O.G.") He vows revenge, and with the help of some of the neighborhood's old school heroes including Flyguy (Antonio Fargas), Kung Fu Joe (Steve James), Hammer (Isaac Hayes), Slammer (football star Jim Brown), and John Slade (Bernie Casey), Spade wages a war against Mr. Big, the neighborhood crime lord.
In the tradition of Airplane! and Naked Gun, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka pokes fun through satire and offensive comedy. The film also features some of the players that would end up on In Living Color and has appearances from such varied actors as Clarence Williams III, Eve Plumb (better known to most as Jan Brady), and Chris Rock as a rib-joint customer. --Shannon Gee
Description
A hilarious Soul Cinema send-up, this ultra-slick, urban action comedy blows 70's blaxploitation movies right out of the 'hood! Featuring the very funny Wayans family (Keenen, Damon and Kim), Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, Isaac Hayes, Jim Brown, Ja'net DuBois, David Alan Grier, Kadeem Hardison and Chris Rock, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka is a perfect "mixture of nostalgia, silliness and genuinely unpredictable humor" (The New York Times). Jack Spade, a goody-goody war hero with medals for short-hand, returns to the ghetto to discover that his brother, Junebug, has OG'd (Over-Golded on jewelry). Jack swears revenge against the local gang boss, Mr. Big, and sets off to enlist an army of Shaft, Superfly and Black Caesarlook-a-likes, that is. They don't come easy, cheap or youngbut they do have nice clothes and enough firepower left in them to practically destroy Mr. Big's Big Brim Bar where the bad guys wearyou guessed itbig hats!
Customer Reviews:
"Naked Gun" through Ebony Eyes.......2007-03-10
This movie takes 70's blaxploitation and makes good clean fun of them. It is the Naked Gun through ebony eyes. You will recognize every single one of these characters from something you've seen before. Included are appearances by Antonio Fargas, Jim Brown, and Isaac Hayes.
Great Black Cinema.......2007-01-15
This movie stands the test of time and is still as hilarious today as it was when it was released. You will laugh out loud as the ridiculousness and fashion excesses of the 70s are mocked. Keenan really outdid himself with this one. "Huggy Bear" wearing gold fish filled glass heeled shoes after coming out of jail is too hilarious for words.
Watch and enjoy.
Im gonna get you laughin .......2006-08-15
Rarely will will you find a movie with this many laughs from beginning to end. The cast is amazing from Issic Hayes to Bernie Casey and the laughs and the sight gags just keep on comming. I compare the humor in this movie to the likes of Airplane and Police squad it,s that funny. Like all super hero movies this has a moral and a message which is even funnier that the plot.I would highly recomend this movie to any one who needs some serious laughs. It,s rared R for a reason mainly the language but that is part of the movies charm. The language does not really offend it just is.
How did he go to the bathroom with all that stuff on???.......2005-09-14
The best way to sum up this film is by saying that this is one of the funniest movies I have seen. This film ranks right up there with Airplane and Blazing Saddles. And by that I mean that after watching this film you will find yourself quoting lines from this film for years to come. I first saw this film over 15 years ago and to this day I still find it hilarious. Even though I have seen it many times and I know all the jokes I still laugh at them. This film is that funny. This is the Wayans Bros. back when they first got started and were at there best. This film is a parody of every blaxploitation film ever made. And it is funny picking out refernces to the different films. Also keep an eye out for cameos from various actors. And always pay attention to things that are happening in the background. 15+ years later and I am still finding things happening in the background that I missed before. So order this film sit back and be prepared to laugh so hard that you cry.
Great Movie but disappointing DVD package.......2004-11-09
One of the funniest I've ever seen. One of the funniest movies of the 80's. But the DVD quality is horrible. Since its not an anamorphic transfer the quality is grainy. The DVD only has 3 gigs of data so that means the movie was compressed. You would think a greatly written and acted movie would have a commentary and extras features. Not on this!! This movie deserved better treatment.
