It's Shakespeare with six-guns as King of Texas goes boldly where no TV Western had gone before. Transplanting King Lear to a Texas cattle ranch was a risky proposition, but as star and co-executive producer (with his wife and fellow Star Trek: The Next Generation alumnus, Wendy Neuss), Patrick Stewart brings his formidable Shakespearean training to bear on a condensed but satisfying interpretation. Whereas Akira Kurosawa's Ran required a gender-switching overhaul of Shakespeare's tragedy, this handsomely mounted TNT Original retains the feuding sisterhood of Lear's undoing. As aging cattle baron John Lear, Stewart sets his downfall in motion, dividing his land and loyalties among daughters played with stalwart fortitude by Marcia Gay Harden, Lauren Holly, and Julie Cox. Familial machinations multiply with a stellar supporting cast (Roy Scheider is the Earl of Gloucester here), and for all of Stewart's impressive fury, it's comedy veteran David Alan Grier (interpreting Shakespeare's "Fool") who quietly steals the show. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Very good!.......2006-08-09
It's based on Shakespeare's King Lear except it's in the 1800s in Texas. Patrick Stewart is John Lear, owner of a 200,000 acres ranch. He has three daughters and he wants to give each of them land but first they must tell him how much they love him. Two of the daughters hate him, especially the oldest, but lie to get his property. Once it's theirs, they let him know their real feelings toward him and also try to takeover their neighbors land.
I never read King Lear but it sure made a darn fine western! Good acting and great plot. Of course it's a great plot, it's Shakespeare! And Patrick Stewart was wonderful but he was trained to play Shakespeare. This is another movie that will please all kinds of people.
SHAKESPEARE GOES WEST.......2006-01-08
KING OF TEXAS is based on Shakespeare's KING LEAR. Not being knowledgeable of Shakespeare's play, I'm not sure how faithful the adaptation is, but one thing's for sure: it plays like a true tragedy with some vile characters. Patrick Stewart who also co-produced with his missus plays John Lear, the patriarch who has decided to divide his vast empire between his three daughters, only one of them he disowns because she doesn't answer a question he posits to them all: why do you love Me? This sets up a tragic series of consequences certainly evident in most of Shakespeare's tragedies: greed, jealousy, murder, revenge. The results are surprisingly good. Stewart is top notch and he gets tremendous support: Roy Scheider has his rancher friend has his best role in years; Marcia Gay Harden is stunning as the most vile of the daughters; Lauren Holly comes in second with her self-centered demeanor; and Julie Cox, the disowned daughter, is the soft and gentle daughter who is really the only one who loves her papa; Matt Letscher is a two-faced son of Scheider's; Liam Waite is the misunderstood brother; Steven Bauer is the Mexican whose land the girls want to take over; Colm Meaney is Harden's upstanding husband; and David Alan Grier is superb as Stewart's loyal "slave" and friend. KING OF TEXAS is an excellent made for TNT movie and quite different.
CLASSIC WESTERN DRAMA WITH ITS ROOTS IN SHAKESPEARE.......2005-11-10
If the immortal Bard could only have imagined the adaptations that his work would inspire! There have been numerous modernizations of Shakespeare's work. From WEST SIDE STORY to TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. There have also been various different stagings for practically all of Shakespeare's stories. So why not a Western?
We get just that in KING OF TEXAS, King Lear set in post-Alamo Texas. The story adaptations flows marvelously with Patrick Stewart starring as John Lear, a Texas patriot turned cattle baron. As with the Shakespeare original, Lear here has built an empire, complete with the pride and ego that attend it. He determines to leave his massive ranch to his daughters, Susannah (Academy Award winner, Marcia Gay Harden), Rebecca (Lauren Holly) and Claudia (Julie Cox). In a show of pseudo-love, the two older daughters charm the aging Lear, get the ranch for themselves and set in motion a chain reaction of drama and tragedy that Old William would have heartily approved of.
Some wonderful twists in the story include the part of the fool from the original play becoming a faithful black servant, Rip, played wonderfully by David Alan Grier (JUMANJI, RETURN TO ME). Keeping with the timeframe involved, it's the only natural solution. His playful banter with John Lear is wonderful and warmly draws the audience in.
The movie's depiction of the tense interplay between the Republic of Texas and Mexico is also a terrific twist as, historically, these two opponents continued to spar with each other for decades following the events that led to Texas independence.
One minor disappointment for me was the resolution of the original relationship of the two brothers, Edmund and Edgar, replaced in the Western drama with Emmett (Matt Letscher) and Thomas (Liam Waite) Westover. Just as in the original play, the scheming and corrupt Emmett works to disinherit his brother, Thomas, the rightful heir. When their father, Henry (Roy Scheider) continues his allegiance to Claudia and goes to warn her of pending trouble, he is blinded (just as with Gloucester in the original play). But in the original play the faithful son returns incognito and plays his father's servant, working carefully back into his father's good graces while waiting for the chance to avenge himself on his brother. Still in disguise, he then confronts his brother in a classic Shakespearean standoff. For the sake of not giving the story away here, let's just say it doesn't happen quite that way in this version.
I also very much missed a corresponding character in KING OF TEXAS for King Lear's faithful friend and advisor, Kent.
But, as mentioned, these are very minor issues at the very worst.
This is a classic Western with all the drama of its roots in Shakespeare with the spectacular setting of Texan grandeur. Not one that you will want to miss.

King Lear meets the Wild Wild West.......2003-02-05
Those of you who enjoy those good old western movies, but are needing a bit of Shakespearean drama, then King of Texas is the movie you want to see. This movie is William Shakespeare's "King Lear" transplanted into a beautiful Texas setting. The major characters found within "King Lear" have been renamed and wonderfully refitted for a classic made for TV western movie. Besides a few minuet modifications to the story line, King of Texas is a close representation for "King Lear". I found this movie to be very entertaining. Patric Stewart delivers an excellent performance, and he doesn't look that bad with a beard. However, I did expect him to whip out a laser gun and kick [rear]... near the climax. Unfortunately, these hopes never came true, but Patric Stewart is the man none the less. This movie is a very nice change of pace of the average made for TV movie. It is very well made with a superb cast, and more importantly the plot stays true to Shakespeare's "King Lear". I would defiantly encourage anyone to watch King of Texas which is quite possibly one of the ton five made for TV movies of the year. So if you like Shakespearean plays and the old west, you will love King of Texas.
Western Shakespeare.......2003-01-28
In the movie King of Texas we are introduced to a new side of Shakespeare, the western Shakespeare. This movie is a fine film and a good resource for those who have already read King Lear, which this movie is based after. Having read King Lear, I noticed how acurate this movie was. There were name changes and a differnt ending but over all it's an entertaining show. The one complaint I have is the way King Lear is protrayed. He is protrayed as angry and impatient in the movie, while in the play he was kinder to his daughters. Also, I would change the ending, I didn't like how Rebecca wasn't killed by her sister. I thought that her death by Gonreil was an important part which showed how heartless she was. This movie will help anyone who didn't quite understand the play. It could be used as a study guide because of how well it follows the play. I recommend this movie to anyone ready for a hoot-hollering good time with a poetic twist.

If you believe Freddie is really the greatest then this is more of the best you can get. Only gave 4 Stars due to two interludes of Freddie talking across the tracks. When will DVD Dude Directors get it that we want the artist's stuff without the break-in talk-fest. Keep it for a special features extra. Otherwise just wonderful. Dave
One of the Best Blues Performers EVER!.......2006-05-25
The band is incredibly tight and funky, Freddie's playing top notch, singing voice is in fantastic form...just an incredible concert. Taped for a Dallas PBS Station in 73, Freddie and his band give it their all. The best King DVD I have and I can't recommend this one enough. Freddie was truly was of the greatest ever to pick up a guitar. The one thing I don't like about the DVD, is the brief insertion of an interview during "Ain't Nobody's Business". That was stupid...but because the rest is so good, forgivable.
If you don't have any Freddie King on DVD, I strongly suggest you start with this one.

Anyone with enough cheek to call himself "Smokin' Joe" better have the goods to back it up; and if your last name is King, you shore 'nuf better be able to play the blues. The good news is that Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King acquit themselves nicely in this concert, recorded on New Year's Eve, 2005 in a Ft. Worth club. Both Texas bluesmen are fine guitarists. Kubek's sound is fast and fiery, with a hard, stinging tone somewhat akin to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, while King's playing is a jazzier, more melodic and idiosyncratic (and thus a little more interesting to listen to); while Kubek takes the lion's share of the soloing, the contrast in styles works best when they trade licks on two extended jams, "Crazy World" and "Where I Want to Be." King handles all the singing, recalling Albert King, while the rhythm section (Paul Jenkins on bass and drummer Ralph Powers) is solid and workmanlike. So what's not to like? Nothing, really--but there's nothing much to love, either. The eleven original tunes, all of them good but none of them exceptional, are drawn from standard genres (rockin' shuffle, slow ballad, minor key lament), but let's face it: in the absence of outstanding showmanship on anyone's part, we're really here for the guitar playing, and an hour or so of that should prove to be plenty. Extras include interviews with Kubek and King and an all-acoustic bonus track. --Sam Graham

I have seen this band twice live and this DVD is a nice way to relive those memories. The music is great and the film makes it fill like your right there. I would have liked to seen more shots of the crowd and the bar but overall I loved it!!
THE BEST BLUES DVD AVAILABLE11111111111111111111.......2006-05-16
I'VE REVIEWED ALOT OF BLUES DVD'S IN RECENT TIMES , BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE AS GOOD AS THIS!!!! SMOKIN JOE AND THE BOYS ARE A 10 STAR IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. THE ONLY COMPLAINT I HAVE IS THAT IT WASN'T 2 HOURS LONG OR MORE. PLEASE DO ANOTHER DVD, SMOKIN JOE................
Smokin' Texas Blues!!.......2006-05-02
I was there for this performance at J&J's, and can't wait to finally see an A+ professionally-produced DVD of this awesome band!
If you can't get to a town where they're playing, you can finally see what you've been hearing on the CD's. As a band, they're tight, and they were in great form on 12/31/05. Joe makes his Stratocasters sing with seemingly no effort at all. Bnois King counterpoints beautifully with his jazzy style and raspy-velvet vocals. And there is no rhythm section in blues more solid than Paul Jenkins on bass, and Ralph Power on drums.
If you have had the pleasure of seeing SJK live, now is your opportunity to show your friends, and to enjoy again and again!

Tex Ritter Rides Again on DVD!.......2006-07-20
This review refers to the Critics Choice DVD named Tex Ritter Triple Feature #3
The movies in this DVD are:
Hitting the Trail, 1937, 58 min., directed by Robert N. Bradbury for Grand National Pictures
Frontier Town, 1938, 59 min., directed by Ray Taylor for GN
Gangsters of the Frontier, 1944, 56 min., directed by Elmer Clifton for PRC
Grand National had its own singing cowboy, Tex Ritter. Tex proved very popular from 1936 - 1945, when he called it a career in movies. His singing was excellent and most of his movies were well produced, albeit in a short schedule and low budget.
"Hitting the Trail" is considered by many one of his best efforts at GN.
In "Frontier Town", Tex Ritter is a lucky rodeo cowboy whose good luck is disturbing a gang of racketeers. You can see the kind of economies that went into the production of those movies by looking at the rodeo scenes. Evidently, the rodeo crowd is stock footage from a modern event. Tex's singing is fine, though.
"Gangsters of the Frontier" is from the 5th motion picture company Tex worked for, PRC. Tex was now working with Dave O'Brien. The theme of the movie, human slavery, is unfortunately very up to date.
Although PRC was a Poverty Row outfit, Gangsters of the Frontier apparently has no use of stock footage. One gimmick that I found interesting was when Tex and Dave were hiding out from a massive gang in a livery stable, a woman plays a wax cylinder on a gramophone with a recording of Tex's voice to divert the bandits' attention. An early use of technology to save lives. Here's an opportunity to compare the work of a more mature Tex Ritter in a completely different outfit.
Critic's Choice's Triple Features are good for collectors. You can build an affordable film library without too much shelf space. Please give us more.

SADDLE UP SADDLE PALS!!!.......2007-05-25
This is most likely the best Roy Rogers dvd on the market today. 3 restored movies from ROAN GROUP ARCHIVAL ENTERTAINMENT ( on one disc ) and they're all winners!
DAYS OF JESSE JAMES (1939) directed by Joe Kane has Roy & Gabby siding with Jesse played by Don "Red" Barry.
ROLL ON TEXAS MOON (1946) directed by William Whitney is one of my personal favorites as Roy tries to clear up a scrap between the sheepmen and cattlemen. I like when Gabby ( a cattleman ) is always being followed by Dale's pet lamb. He yells, " ...quit follerin' me ya walkin' lamb chop! "...This is the uncut theatrical version.
KING OF THE COWBOYS (1943) also directed by Joe Kane is the big WINNER here. Combining several source prints this version runs longer than it's original theatrical version & also includes alternate scenes as a bonus.
All 3 films LOOK GREAT & it's a real treat to watch them presented as such.
Another great bonus is a Trucolor short of Roy welcoming Roy Rogers Riders Club members to this weeks movie at the local theater.
All in all this dvd is A MUST for all Roy Rogers Fans!!!
As Gabby would say," That's the ticket by crackie!".
BUY THIS.
Good Old Fashioned Western.......2000-09-02
A great trio of films with the BEST cowboy EVER. Being a Brit who grew up going to Saturday morning pictures, its great to be able to see some of his films in SUPERB clarity and pretty good sound. A nice touch was the Roy Rogers Club short which is also the great thing about DVD, you get a lot for your money. All in all, a great deal and good films. Please keep them coming!

Description
Some of the finest homes in America were built by the nation's cattle barons of the West and now AMERICA'S CASTLES has exclusive access to these extraordinary estates. Cherokee Ranch in Colorado was designed in the style of a Scottish Castle circa 1450. It includes plaster molding of the 16th century and wrought iron doors from the 18th century. The present owner is an 82-year-old heiress who raises champion cattle by day and throws lavish parties by night. King Ranch, near Kingsville, Texas, is bigger than the state of Rhode Island. It is the largest ranch in the continental United States - 826,000 acres spreading over four counties. The two-storied, twenty-five-room house is built around a central patio, providing all rooms with two exposures. Bronze doors, balustrades and marble stairs were imported from Italy while the wrought iron and stained glass work was provided by Tiffany. Trail End Historic Center in Wyoming was built by John B. Kendrick. The Flemish-style home was completed in 1913 with golden oak and mahogany paneling, stained glass, an elevator, a central vacuuming system, eight bathrooms, a ballroom and an English gothic library. Thistle Hill was built by cattle baron W.T. Waggoner for his daughter Electra. The famous home on the hill features a pergola and tea house as well as turn-of-the-century furnishings.

Customer Reviews:
Early Tex is the Best.......2005-04-01
Tex's personality always comes through in his early movies and this is no exception. He was a real guy. His songs were far better than Roy's or Gene's. They seemed more real somehow.
Charlie King, Yakima Canutt and Earle Dwyer are all here. Seeing the three of them in one close-up shot was a real treat. Those 3 guys alone must have been half of the B Western phenomenon. Tex gets to punch out Charlie again, Yak does a variation on his famous falling-between-the-horses stunt and Earle is the leader of the bad guys. Could you ask for anything more?
Rita shines even at 19 in this low-budget movie. Tex was obviously quite taken with her (look at his expression in one of the cantina scenes). She had more of a role than the typical female leads in these movies and does a pretty good job.
Here are a few lines from one of the songs where a cowboy has died and has to meet St. Peter:
...a cowboy's soul ain't white as snow
but in that distant cattle land
he sometimes acted like a man.
Redemption. It doesn't get any better than that. I would have given this 5 stars if there wasn't so much rodeo stuff.
Please, manufacturers, give us more EARLY Tex. They were more raw and better. In fact, give us more of the early stuff from all the six-gun heroes.
It doesn't have much action, but it does have Rita Hayworth.......2005-02-07
Tex really hit the jackpot in Trouble in Texas; he always had a pretty little filly to ride off into the sunset with, but this time around it was none other than Rita Hayworth (appearing under the name Rita Cansino), who was just on the brink of bona fide stardom in 1937. Trouble in Texas is far from Tex Ritter's most exciting film, but the Rita Hayworth factor makes it one of his more notable B-westerns.
Tex Masters (Ritter) and his typically goofy sidekick Lucky (Horace Murphy) have been traveling from one rodeo to the next in search of the rodeo bandits that killed Tex's brother. At the same time Tex is riding into Middleton, Texas, to sign up for the big event being staged there, Carmen Serano (Hayworth) is arriving as an accomplice to the racketeers, who are led by an hombre named Barker (Earl Dwire). What no one there knows is that Serano is a government agent sent to get the goods on the bad guys. As you might expect, Carmen takes quite a shine to a certain charming singing cowboy. The bad guys notice him, too, especially when he starts winning all of the big money events in the rodeo competition, and mark him for death. I won't tell you how they go about taking him out, but I have to say it's one of the oldest tricks in the book.
As far as the action goes, much of the rodeo action seems to be stock footage. Of the two fights Tex gets into, one of them actually takes place behind closed doors - which is sort of a gyp. There's less riding and shooting than usual in this western, as well. Then there's Lucky, who distinguishes himself as one of Tex's more annoying sidekicks. Tex is still Tex, though, and his singing (including Cowboy's Lament, Song of the Rodeo, and Down the Colorado Trail) along with Rita Hayworth's dancing make Trouble in Texas a B-western worth seeing.
Note: this review is of Trouble in Texas only. You may be reading this review under an item packaging a film called The Dancing Pirate alongside the film in question, but I can only comment on Trouble in Texas.
Rita Hayworth fans save your money.......2003-05-03
I watched the dancing pirates and couldn't even tell which dancer was Rita. How dare they even include that as being a movie of hers. Poor Poor quality.
TROUBLEIN TEXAS/DANCING PIRATE.......2003-02-15
SAVE YOUR MONEY..PICTURE RECORDED IN EP FORMAT. SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY POOREST ON DANCING PIRATE. TROUBLE IN TEXAS HAS
RODEO SCENES IN WHICH THE FILM DOES MORE BUCKING THAN THE BULLS.
VERY GOOD MOVIE [COMPROMISED] WITH POOR RECORDING BY MADACY MUSIC GROUP ST. LAURENT QUEBEC CANADA.
