Though there are several notable film adaptations of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story about an orphan girl and a bedridden boy, this 1975 BBC rendition is among the most acclaimed for its understated British elegance, superb performances, and faithful adherence to the book's essence. Sarah Hollis Andrews plays Mary Lennox, a spoiled, neglected child living in 19th century India who is suddenly orphaned after an outbreak of cholera. She is sent to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, in his estate on the Yorkshire moors of England. Thus begins Mary's new life at Misselthwaite Manor, and soon, the rough edges of her contrary nature begin to soften through the kindness of house servants--especially Martha (Jacqueline Hoyle)--and the discovery of a beautiful, hidden garden. The manor contains another mystery, Craven's allegedly crippled son, Colin, bedridden for years and as feisty as Mary. When the cousins finally meet, their cantankerous spirits clash before a friendship ensues, thanks to the magical touch of Dickon (Andrew Harrison). The same enchantment that turns a colorless garden into an infusion of brilliant hues works to make a boy walk and a family heal. This version (seven 30-minute episodes) is more kid-friendly than its 1993 counterpart (which took lavish dramatic license) and is so authentic to the original story that much of the script is verbatim from the book—a point literary purists will cheer--not to mention the deliciously flawless Yorkshire accents. Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon

Great Movie.......2007-05-13
A good adaptation of a wonderful children's story. More importance is placed on the "magic" of the story than on the faith in the story. Faith, Prayer, Hope and Love of God are what created the magic and this is not emphasized as it is in the book. This was disappointing, but other than that the setting was beautiful and allowed our imaginations to fill in the gaps that were emitted from the movie that F. H. Burnett had written. A wonderful family movie.
Very Positive.......2007-05-06
This movie is very good because it shows the power of friendship and the importance of believeing in ourselves and knowing that we can do anything, if we don't give-up.

Wonderful Film.......2007-01-18
This is a great film, I loved it as a child and still enjoy it now. The Secret Garden is still the simple story of two children looking for a love that they dont have.
Don't miss this version of the Secre Garden!

Two of Frances Hodgson Burnett's most treasured children's novels come to the screen in wondrous adaptations. Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) directs A Little Princess, the magical story of a girl who uses her powers of imagination and zest for life to overcome hardships at a stern boarding school. And three lonely children are forever changed as they learn to trust each other while restoring and taking refuge in The Secret Garden. Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa) directs and Francis Ford Coppola executive produces a luminous film in which magic and hope bloom.

Deceptive Sales Tactic - No Widescreen Versions.......2007-06-22
The movies are great, but these reviews are also about the product itself and this Double Feature product sucks because it says it contains the Widescreen versions of the films, but it does not - it only has the full screen versions. If you're a big DVD buff, this will not be good enough for you as it was not for me!
Fullscreen Only.......2007-06-14
Despite the claims on the packaging that this includes both widescreen and fullscreen versions of each film, it only includes the fullscreen versions.
With as visual of a director as Cuaron, "A Little Princess" should only be seen in its original unmodified presentation. Seek out the individual releases for each of these instead, to get them in their proper aspect ratio.
A Girl's Treasures.......2007-01-10
A Little Princess and the Secret Garden have been favorites in our family for a while. My daughter wore out the video tapes when she was in elementary school. She is now 21. I bought this CD set so we can keep them in the family because my other daughter (8yrs old) loves them as well.
I must say A Little Princess is my all time favorite that I still watch with my youngest daughter and I still cry at the end when Papa cries out for his daughter...SARA!!!
Love it.......2006-08-30
I loved these movies as a young girl, myself and have watched them many times already. Also, fast shipping and what a great deal in cost!
A Little Princess is a Royal Gem.......2006-08-29
I first saw this movie in the theaters with my then 5-yr-old daughter. The movie is a rich mixture of adventure, fun, despair, imagination and love. The movie is visually amazing, the early 20th century brought vividly to life. The score is perfectly composed to heighten the rollercoaster of emotions evoked by Cuaron's story.
I recently watched this movie again with my now 16 year old daughter, and I have a renewed appreciation for this movie. The cinematography, the score, the absolutely awesome cast, make this easily one of the best family movies of all time.
Every father with a daguther should see this movie... it will draw you closer to one another, give her a life affirming message, and entertain you both.

Watch the 1993 version instead..........2007-06-30
These Hallmark films bore me to tears. They are far from exciting, let alone interesting. Nothing more than a long talk-a-thon with very little going on. The music is not so great either. Watch the 1993 version instead. It's the best one. You can find it here: The Secret Garden
book or film review?.......2007-01-18
Amazon's reviewing system isn't working for this BOOK - most of the reviews seem to be for a film version - and one that is not in keeping with the book at all, as well.
Anyway, MY review is for the BOOK. I wish I had discovered it as a child. Or at least in time to read it to my own children.
A message to all of those who worry about 'Pagan' content in children's books: forget Harry Potter and the Wizard of Oz - everybody recognizes those as fantasies. The Secret Garden is the Real Thing, rich with Earth Magic and wonder, with its own Puck in the gentler form of Dickon, and its own Wise Woman - Dickon's mother, who trusts in the healing power of nature.
No one hops on a broom here, or waves a wand; the magic is real.
A better release.......2007-01-03
Having read the slim story and seeing all film versions, I am inclined to think this the best.
It is not in the least important how the childhood characters did not look like the adult characters. In theater and film you are bound by constraints. Are you going to make the film or wait for some future incarnation of the child lead who would appear to be the same as an adult? Nope.
Gennie James came across as a spoiled and petulant child. Her performance made me look away at times and grind my teeth. Barret Oliver was magical. As a charming and sad child he gave the strong impression of being prescient. This sets things up for the inevitable longing and sorrow that follows.
We dismiss the emotions of childhood because we believe that they cannot compare to our own vast warehouse of sadness and dreams lost. This film perhaps can correct this misperception.
The Best Version.......2006-11-25
When this version of The Secret Garden movie came out I was only 7 years old at the time, but had already read the book. I am now 25 years old and the book and this version of the movie is my favorite. I would have to say that the boy that is playing Colin is a little difficult to handle watching at times, while Barret Oliver who plays Dickon is a wonder to watch, it was to bad he didn't receive that many more movie offers after this one. I agree with some that the ending with Mary and Colin in the garden is not like it ended in the book, but it also put's a finishing touch on a very moving story. While the girl that they hired to play the grown up Mary doesn't look much like the child, look for Colin Firth in a small but wonderful role as the grown up Colin. I also agree that it is to bad that they felt the need to kill Dickon off, but if you happen to watch the movie The Return to the Secret Garden, than you get a little of that back story in that movie. I would recommend this movie to any one who has ever read the book. While not a true image to the screen of the book, it's still a good one to watch.
A Classic Not to be Missed.......2006-11-16
This is by far my favorite version of this classic story and the most authentic and true to the spirit of the book. The cast and direction are excellent and the setting is gorgeous. This film will delight both children and adults with it's adventure, suspense, and innocent romance. It's a little spooky in some scenes, but of the fun rather than truly scary kind. This story has a very positive underlying message but doesn't preach, rather it expresses it in subtly beautiful ways as the characters unlock the mysteries of the Secret Garden and of themselves. No matter what age you are, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, uplifting, perhaps even transformative film - don't miss it!

The truest adaptation.......2007-05-02
The abbreviated VHS version of this BBC rendition of The Secret Garden was one of my favorite films as a child, so it was with some trepidation that I ordered this lengthier DVD. I didn't know whether the additional scenes would add to the story, or detract from it. After watching one half-hour episode a night for a week, I can say that I was quite impressed by how faithfully the full length rendition stuck to the original story. No other adaptation that I've encountered, (and I've encountered many of them, including an audio drama and a musical stage play,) was content to stick to Francis Hodgson Burnett's simple childhood tale. In this case, however, there were only a few deviations, the most notable being the presence of John, the footman, who plays a brief, nameless role in the book, but is a fairly important supporting character in this version. This, like the other fairly small alterations, is mainly an exposition device, and takes the place of narration.
There are places where this film shows its budgetary constraints. The titles aren't as clean as they could be, and whenever the robin appears it is obviously via stock footage. The garden, which is clearly on a sound stage, does not appear to contain any trees large enough to sit in, let alone fall out of. But all of these things are minor quibbles, and there's a lot to make up for them. The costuming and the Yorkshire accents are spot on, and all of the characters look exactly the way that they are described in the book, down to the smallest detail. I would recommend this classic to anyone who enjoyed the original story, and doesn't feel the need to see it 'enhanced' with dramatic subplots.
Realistic and touching to watch!!.......2007-03-01
I recently watched an abridged version of this movie and plan to purchase the full version as I want to know what sections are missing and because I love the way the British depict a story. What was shown in the l00 plus minutes to me was lovely to say the least! I would not say that this film was cheaply made at all, in fact I was impressed with the decors of the rooms, the dress of the characters and the look of the large home from outside and the countryside. Yes, there is slight grainy filming only when the characters go outside, but it is not really that bad and when they enter the garden it looks normal like the inside of the house. To me this did not take away from the film. I also enjoyed the accents of the characters and the interaction between characters. I did not find it hard at all to understand their speech and I felt that the characters had great concern and emotion for one another. I was surprised that Colin's father actually appeared normal and rather nice because I had watched two other versions of this movie and felt the 1993 version though beautiful to watch was not so realistic nor did I feel the characters were as loving towards one another especially the head maid and Colin's father toward Colin or Mary. The father was extremely unrealistic and foreboding in that version. I watched the 1949 version and the acting was somewhat overdone and the movie was dark overall. I felt in this BBC version that all the characters started out somewhat disliking one another but all came around and even Colin's father and the head maid showed care and concern for Mary and I was happy that it was a very happy story. I also liked the character development and much interaction between the maids and the children without hatred shown and the sets were just right and not fake at all. The garden was just that...a garden a realistic garden. I can't wait to see the longer version because the pace of the BBC movies is nice and slow giving time to developing the characters!! If you like realism and getting to know the characters without a lot of overplay and hype this is the version for you!!
The REAL Secret Garden!.......2006-12-27
I am so glad to see this DVD finally released in the U.S. We watched this version of The Secret Garden in England in 1975 when it was produced for the BBC. We arranged our calendar around the excellent and accurate productions of the timeless children's classic books. BBC productions are known for their accurate portrayal of the author's intent. The Secret Garden did not disappoint. Each character was so carefully cast that we felt we were inside the book. Sarah Hollis Andrews IS Mary Lennox--in looks as well as demeanor. And Martha and Dickon and all the other characters are so perfectly cast. No detail is overlooked. The script is true to the book and the detail in the settings, the authentic accents in the speech, all are so perfect. I am always put off by movies that distort stories in order to add dramatic flair and romance, thinking the book wasn't strong enough in its own right. If you want to watch the Hallmark production or any of the others, do so, but see this one FIRST. You will be transported right into the pages of the book and you will live with the characters as they grow. The emotion you will feel will far surpass anything that can be wrought by the Hallmark version. This is a wonderful family film. If you have not read the book, I recommend that, also, unabridged, of course.
Seeing this released gives me hope that more of the BBC classics might come to DVD in the U.S. I am still waiting for their version of Carrie's War, A Little Princess, Heidi, all of which we saw come alive in the 1975 BBC television series.
True to the Book, WOW!.......2006-06-08
If you're looking for a big-budget, super-dramatic movie adaption of The Secret Garden, then I recommend the 1993 version. But if you're looking for a true-to-the-book movie adaption, buy this. I love the book The Secret Garden, and although the 1993 version is an okay-ish movie, it's not at all like the books. This one was amazingly true to the book, which I think is worth at least four stars. Mary was cast well, I can't say the same for Dickon and Collin. I think that they were cast better in the 1993 version. But that's just me. I got this movie for my 10th birthday, and I'm pretty picky on movie adaptions on books. But this is as good as it gets! I really reccomend it to anyone who liked the book!
Watch this one!.......2006-04-04
This is the version of The Secret Garden to watch! My eight year old daughter and I recently read the book together and loved it. (It was my first reading) We anxiously looked forward to seeing a filmed version, and the first one we saw was Agnieszeka Holland's 1997 version, as that was the only one available at our local library. We were both terribly dissappointed. Holland's version takes such liberties with the story as to sacrifice the true spirit, beauty and depth of the book. Yes, it is gorgeously filmed, but the cinematography (which includes some very tacky special effects such as sped up roots growing in soil) does not compensate for the slaughter of the story and characters. The garden itself is so fantastical as to make a mockery of its significance to the story.
This version is completely truthful to the book. The story is developed carefully and thouroughly, and presented in great detail. The characters are rich and reminded both my daughter and myself of how we had imagined them to be. The English countryside is faithfully portrayed as only the English know how. It is delightful to enjoy true Yorkshire accents which are an important theme in the book, even if they are sometimes difficult to understand for american ears. The garden is gentle and real. Yes there are some minor flaws (some lines are actually flubbed in a couple of the final episodes) but they are inconsequential. If you have taken the time to read the book, then by all means take the time to see this movie. You will be glad you did.

In this sequel to The Secret Garden, set in 1946, an American orphan named Lizzie (Camilla Belle) gets to live at Misselthwaite Manor in England courtesy of Mary Craven (Cherie Lunghi), who grew up there. It's now an orphanage and Martha Sowerby (Joan Plowright) has become headmistress. Although the garden is no longer secret, neither is it as lush as it became under Mary's care. Because Lizzie also has a green thumb, Miss Sowerby allows her to work on it during Sundays, but it's off limits to children the rest of the week. Lizzie just can't stay away, so she breaks the rules and gets in trouble. By the end, she has found a way--with Miss Sowerby's permission--to make the garden bloom again. Although this film lacks the suspense of The Secret Garden, it's faithful to the spirit of the original and is suitable for the whole family. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Back to the Secret Garden.......2007-01-09
I purchased Back to the Secret Garden as a gift for my two nieces and they just love it. This is as good as the original and I would recommend it highly for adults and children alike.
Worth watching.......2006-11-04
I love The Secret Garden and am happy I purchased and viewed this sequel. It was difficult to accept a grouchy Martha, but I stayed with the story. While this is not as good as the original (novel, stage play, movie), it was worth watching. I am not sure, yet, that it is a "keeper."
slightly disappointed.......2006-07-20
I watched the movie 3x now,I was saddened to see she was married to Colin. The house and garden had too many changes.
A good sequal to The Secret Garden!.......2005-07-06
I liked this sequal a good bit,but I think it lacks something. It doesn`t seem to have the magical Secret Garden touch to me!It`s worth seeing, but probably not buying! It`s not great, but it`s not horrible either!
a fan of the first.......2005-05-09
this is by far the worst moive I've seen. I LOVE the first secret garden. No one can do a sequel to a moive as good as the origanl. It's a classic. But this sequel is terriable. It controdicts the first moive. It takes the magic away. If you liked the origanl, first moive don't watch this, it will take the magic out of the first moive.

Customer Reviews:
the BEST Secret Garden.......2006-02-10
I had a unique FORTUNATE experience to have Kate Maberly all to myself several times... it's not that way folks ! The one and only theater in my town (Fairborn, Ohio) was shutting down in about 1995 or so and the last show(s) I remember playing were "The Secret Garden". I know I snuck away from (Computer Science) classes to see Kate because she was SOOO! cute and she had that British accent nailed down!
Kate's is the VERY BEST that you will see for the "Secret Garden", but Amelia Shankley's is the VERY, VERY BEST that you will ever see for "A Little Princess"... you will cry and cry and thank God that Amelia has more guts than you do. Amelia endures tortures that we can only thank the Lord we don't need to go through.
a bargain?.......2005-10-13
This DVD looks like a bargain: two movies for the price of one. Is it? Like most apparent bargains, there is a catch.
The Secret Garden. Whether you've read the book or not, the BBC version (3 and a half hours long) is by far the best movie version of all four versions. The characters, scenery, accents, music--all are priceless. And it also follows the book. Every child deserves to see this movie. This version has just been released on DVD.
A Little Princess. If you've read the book A Little Princess, you're going to be disappointed in this movie. The movie throws the book away. If you haven't read the book, it's not a bad children's movie. But there is a better movie of A Little Princess which also throws the book away: the 1939 Shirley Temple version (which is available on DVD for only $4.99).
If you HAVE read the book, A Little Princess, you have only one choice: the Wonderworks version from the late 1970s. This version is excellent in every way (except for the casting of the main character), an English ambience, excellent casting of all the other characters, superb acting, good music, etc. It is over two and a half hours long and follows the book very closely. (Oddly enough, this version has just been re-released--on VHS!!! Hasn't Wonderworks ever heard of DVD?)
Bottom line: this DVD is not a bargain. Get the 1975 version of The Secret Garden and wait for the Wonderworks version to come out on DVD.
Warning: If you go for this deal and ever see one of the good movie versions someday, you're going to be very, very angry that you fell for this "bargain."
Double dose of Francis Hodgeson Burnett.......2005-09-02
A Little Princess, a classic story of a little girls hope, that has been remade several times, is presented in this two disc set.
The secret garden is another classic tale, that has been retold many times.
These movies are presented on 2 double sided DVD's, each one featuring a wide screen and a full screen version.
There are not many special features on the DVD's, but if you just want the movies, then this is the set for you.

Outstanding DVD and it's music from heaven.......2005-04-12
I owned this Secret Garden DVD for a week now and I just can't put it down, I have to watch it every night! After watching this DVD, I went out and buy all their first 3 albums(Songs from a Secret Garden,White Stones and Dawn of a New Cenury), the music is that good... How can you not embrace songs like Poeme, Hymn to Hope, Passacaglia, Sona,Dawn of a New Century (and others). These songs keep playing in my head while I am at work, I just can't get enough of them, it's insane! The picture and sound is real DVD quality, so clear and so precise. Excellent arrangement on stage from a small orchestra and with guests like Anuna and Karen Matheson, you just can't go wrong. The DVD features 2 small behind the scenes about the making of their first 3 albums and some other interesting articles.I wish they have the song "Illumination" included in there since it has such a beautiful and haunting melody. This song ranks on top of my list, along with Poeme and Passacaglia. If you like New Age music in general, then this Secret Garden DVD must be part of your collection along with Yanni's Tribute DVD.
An Excellent Concert.......2005-02-05
I am also baffled by the poor reviews I read here especially since they say they like Secret Garden. So I just had to comment on this. To say it is near CD quality is way off base. Maybe it's time for you to get a new sound system. I've had this DVD for over a year (or two?) and played it many times to the enjoyment of family and friends. The 5.1 surround is excellent as well as the sound quality of the music and vocals. It's Secret Garden at their best and I highly reccomend it.
A Great Experience.......2004-05-12
I have barely owned this DVD 48 hours and cannot put it down. Everything about it is just amazing. Some of the most incredible music ever done is on this. This is well worth your time if you appreciate beautiful music. The concert and DVD format is first class. The reviewer who is complaining about the "muted singing" is off base....they need to turn up the volume. There is nothing wrong with the sound in any of this. This is one of the best DVD's I have ever seen. Buy it and enjoy it.
Poor stage production and recording.......2004-02-26
I love Secret Garden's music, but this DVD is a big disappointment: poor stage lighting and cluttered stage settings. Compared to other concert DVDs I have (e.g., Josh Graban and Sarah Brightman), this concert production and recording were poor.
I don't feel this DVD adds much value to a simple CD. This DVD is sitting on my shelf and collecting dust. Sad.
I hope Secret Garden's next DVD will be better.

Description
Who was Mary Magdalene? Was she a redeemed prostitute? Was she a high priestess from a different religious tradition embracing fertility rituals?
MAGDALENE UNVEILED takes us into the world of the ancient and modern sacred prostitute. This 2-DVD set explores the mystique of Mary Magdalene and other archetypal symbols of a primordial sacred-sexual role. Contemporary women and men known as sacred intimates, tantrikas, sexual healers, dakas/dakinis, and sexual shamans share their lives and their visions.
Presenters include followers of Mary Magdalene, Western Tantra teachers, a porn star, a Tibetan Buddhist lama, an African Nubian-Khamite priestess, a Native American shaman, and an Episcopal priest.
The contemporary sacred prostitute no longer has a public temple where she or he can share the ceremonies openly. There is little or no lineage to reveal the sacred mysteries from high priest/ess to initiate. Legally, socially, religiously, the sacred prostitute has been out in the cold until now!
Customer Reviews:
great stories.......2007-03-22
the interviews were what made it for me..they were all modern practitioners of sacred sexuality, it included priestesses, massueses, tantric practitioners and believe it or not ministers. the views they expressed were very applicable to our modern world..will warn the watcher mary magdeline is only really mentioned twice in the documentary, but further fleshed out in the special feature areas...
