My wife and I celebrate our 30th anniversary of marriage this year and remember this movie fondly from almost 30 years ago. We both agreed that every aspect of the movie seemed better than when we viewed it last. The story was easier to follow, the humour seemed more ironic and the music exceeded my expectations in it's placement within the movie. I was left wanting more.

Heritage House, Mendocino.......2007-05-07

I bought this video to view before we visited the inn where it all happens: Heritage House in Mendocino, CA. As we drove up the coast, we talked about the movie, the moral issues, the actors, and it gave us so much to talk about, we almost missed the view of the Pacific! Just a little dated, but Alan Alda is so magnificent in this that you can put
aside your critic's pen and just enjoy. His performance should have brought him an Oscar.

terrific romantic comedy.............2007-05-06

Doris (Ellen Burstyn) is a young housewife who has a chance encounter with George Peters (Alan Alda), at a country bed and breakfast. Though married to others, the two have an instant connection and mutual attraction. Though, both of them are devoted to their spouses and children, they agree to meet at the same time and place, year in and year out. As their 26 year love affair progresses, their conversations reflect the evolution of United States politics and social issues.

This film is funny, insightful and witty. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn have wonderful screen chemistry. They are very believable and are a joy to watch, as they celebrate one another's joyous ups and comfort each other at their darkest hours in life. Really great!

A great collection of James Stewart movies.......2007-06-14

This is a great collection of James Stewart's finest non-Hitchcock performances in films under the control of Universal Studios that span thirty years in his career. The price is excellent, but the trade-off is that you don't get much in the way of extras. In fact, all you get are theatrical trailers on a couple of the movies.

Shenandoah (1965) is a film about the Anderson family of Virginia, which is living a happy life on their family farm when the Civil War breaks out. They are convinced this skirmish has nothing to do with them, but they are soon to find out otherwise. Stewart certainly gives one of the performances of his career in this one.

The Glenn Miller Story (1953) reteams James Stewart with June Allyson, who were so good in "The Stratton Story", in a similar film about a man with great talent whose career was cut short by tragedy. Miller has always been ranked as one of the great swing bandleaders of the late thirties to middle forties era, and this film is a great tribute to his life and work. A great performance from all involved.

Thunder Bay (1953) is set in the post-World War II era, but in many ways it is another James Stewart western. Stewart portrays ex-Navy engineer Steve Martin who wants to design a safe off-shore oil drilling platform. Instead of the cattlemen versus the sheepherders, in this film we have the oil drillers versus the fishermen who see their way of life threatened. Stewart seems a less sympathetic figure here than he does in most of his films, but he handles the role wonderfully.

You Gotta Stay Happy (1948) is the lighter side of Stewart. This one is "It Happened One Night" meets "The Bride Came C.O.D" as a wealthy girl hides aboard Stewart's plane when she gets a case of the immediate post-wedding jitters. What results is a screwball comedy that predictably ends in the wealthy girl (Joan Fontaine) and Stewart's character falling in love. The plot is not that intriguing, but Stewart is charming as always. This is probably the weakest of the five films.

Next Time, We Love (1936) is a very early Stewart film that really gave him his first big break with a leading role. In this film he was teamed with Margaret Sullivan, and together they play a couple that marries on impulse and then begin pursuing their own individual careers - she is an actress, he is a journalist. Conflict develops when her career takes off and his does not. This film is very typical of those melodramas that were so common in the 1930's, but it is still interesting to see what Stewart does with this early role in his career. Stewart and Sullivan have a better chance to show off their chemistry in 1938's "Shopworn Angel", but that film was made by MGM and is therefore not in this collection.

5 Jimmy Stewart films for about $4 each is hard to not give a 5 star rating to. 3 of these films are seeing their DVD debut (unlike the John Wayne set that came out today with all 5 already being available individually). I am already owner of The GLenn Miller Story and SHenandoah as many Jimmy STewart fans must and still consider this a good purchase. The three movies new to DVD all have merit and span a 20 year range from his first leading role in 1936 ("Next TIme We Love" where he mentions lindberghs flight to Paris in his first lines)to "Thunder Bay" in 1953. This was Universals first widescreen film and directed by Anthony Mann. I am a big fan of all the Mann/Stewart films and this one is terrific.

Bottom line...if you don't own any and are a Jimmy Stewart fan...whopeee!
If you do own a couple...its still a good deal.
PS..these 5 films are on 3 DVDs but NO FLIPPERS...one sided dual layers!

If you want just one Star Trek DVD set in your collection, Star Trek Fan Collective: Time Travel may be it. Of the 15 time-bending episodes on the affordably priced four-disc set, two are perhaps the most acclaimed in franchise history: the Original Series' "The City on the Edge of Forever" (written by sci-fi giant Harlan Ellison) and Deep Space Nine' s "Trials and Tribble-ations" (in which the DS9 crew is cleverly edited into the original crew's "The Troubles with Tribbles" episode). The other selections are the Original Series' "Tomorrow Is Yesterday"; The Next Generation's "Yesterday's Enterprise," "Cause and Effect," the two-part "Time's Arrow," and the series finale "All Good Things..."; DS9's "Little Green Men"; and Voyager's two-part "Year of Hell" and series finale "Endgame."

One could quibble with the episode selection. Because the Fan Collectives were compiled by vote from fans, Voyager's series finale "Endgame" was included even though it was also on Fan Collective: Borg. It would have been nice to remove that duplicate and substitute the acclaimed DS9 two-parter "Past Tense," which would have been a better representation of that series than "Little Green Men" (in which the Ferengi travel to Roswell) and "Tribble-ations," both of which are deserving selections but considerably lighter in tone than the series as a whole. Also, Enterprise isn't represented at all. The only bonus features are new text commentaries on three episodes by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda. --David Horiuchi

Star Trek is FUN! Time travel possible?.......2007-06-27

My favorite Star Trek episodes are the Time Travel ones. Kirk is great, Picard is kind of boring. Sisko is meh, Janeway is crabby, Archer is great. This has one of my all time Next Gen favorites "Yesterday's Enterprise". For old Star Trek you can't beat the episode were Kirk and Spock go back to the great depression and Spock makes a tricorder out of old TV parts. They cut out the scene were Kirk and Spock have a hard boiled egg eating contest and Spock pukes. This is much better than buying the complete seasons. Paramount is still selling them for over $100. I wish they would have made a time travel episode were Picard goes back in time and meets Kirk and they get in a fish fight that lasts an hour with the Vulcan fight music in the background. Remember "The Cable Guy"? I am not one of those guys that shows up to work in his captain Kirk starfleet uniform. Ooops, have to go my communicator is beeping. "Scotty, beam me up!"

Time Travel -- The Final Frontier.......2007-01-10

I really enjoy stories and movies dealing with traveling through time (in either direction). Being a really big Star Trek fan, I have seen all these episodes numerous times. But it's nice to have these all in one set. I liked that they included episodes from four of the Star Trek series. My only criticism was the fact they left out some of the episodes I thought they would have included. I suppose they had limitations on the number they could use. Who would have guessed they actually did so many time travel stories over the years.

This was a great collection of time travel episodes from several Star Trek series...I even started to like TOS. But I can't help but feel that some choices should have been included like Before and After from the Voyager series...but otherwise, its a great buy.

Not Enough Disaster, Too Much Melodrama.......2007-03-10

I'm not sure if I should even give this movie 3 stars. See, my favorite type of film is a disaster movie and this movie coudln't really be called that. It's got too many silly sub-plots.

I guess the movie just spent too much time talking and not enough of it had anything to do with the disasters at hand. I don't mind talking in a movie if it has something to do with what the movie is supposed to be about, but this had too many boring parts and I kept wishing they would have shown more of the effects of the disasters and how people were dealing.

Oh well, it was okay, but, overall pretty boring.

In "The Fire Next Time" documentary filmmaker Patrice O'Neill examines the conflict over environmental issues taking place in Montana's Flathead Valley. With a large influx of retirees (and even a few celebrities), real estate values have soared, but the traditional industries--such as logging and millwork have eroded. In this rapidly growing but still pristine area, opinions are divided over various environmental issues including logging, national park road closures, and snowmobile use.

But the difficult situation faced by residents of Flathead Valley becomes much more explosive when other factors are added to the equation. John Stokes purchased local radio station KGEZ, and although he too is a relative newcomer to the area, he rapidly found an audience, according to the filmmaker, amongst the anti-environmentalists. At one point Stokes acknowledges "we can't assassinate people in this country" while rolling his eyes at the camera, and with inflammatory statements saying that environmentalists should be "eradicated", calling them "green slime" and Green Nazis, Stokes even led a public green swastika burning amid his cheering coterie of like-minded fans.

All communities have their fringe dwellers on all sides of the cultural/social/political divide. But the situation in the Flathead Valley seems to be far beyond that. It should perhaps come as no surprise that a well-armed militia emerged "with more weapons than the entire police armory"--along with a hit list and a certain amount of vigilante activity directed primarily towards environmentalists and various government officials. But what is surprising is that teachers were pressured to conform (in one case for participating in a Martin Luther King essay contest) and this indicates much broader-based institutionalized problems. Equally disturbing is the mysterious death of a lesbian environmentalist, and her death certainly raises a number of ugly questions.

The unfortunate term 'ecoterrorist' is frequently bandied about these days as part of the current 'green scare', and it's a term that Stokes uses in the film towards fellow Flathead Valley residents. While one environmentalist argues, "we do happen to be the stewards of this planet," another resident--opposed to any preservation methods--states "if these environmentalists would just shut up, everything would be just fine." In many ways, the struggle taking place in the Flathead Valley over resources epitomizes the environmental battle taking place on the planet. What's so interesting about the situation in this region is that many locals--opposed to environmental protections--see the government agencies as full of "commies." Some additional background information on the specific issues debated would have boosted this film tremendously, but nonetheless, "The Fire Next Time" is an interesting, worthwhile documentary--displacedhuman

This is included as part of Docurama's first "Film Festival" set and is an excellent example of a new documentarian doing an excellent job capturing both sides of an argument about land use. Even better, the real "fire" of the events is unanticipated by filmmaker Patrice O'Neill and caught her as off-guard as it will catch viewers.

The box for the DVD says new digital transfer and yet the video on screen was nearly unwatchable it was of such poor quality. Definitely not truth in advertising. I love this movie and couldn't wait to see it again after all these years, so this was a major disappointment.

It's a pitty, I have been searching for a DVD version of this movie for so long.
And when I finally find it, I discover it is a copy of a bad VHS version, with a picture and sound
quality that it's a shame to put on the market on a DVD.I allready have an VHS copy at home, that is fare
more better than this DVD.I can off course bear the loss of the money, but with the sincere hope, that this
movie some time in the future could be released in a propher quality version on DVD, and
this time for real!From a propher master and with subtitle.

This so-called remastered DVD version of "The Next Man" is not a technical improvement on the original VHS version. In addition to highly distorted sound and fuzzy picture quality, the film was poorly edited.The tech info provided by Amazon is skimpy and misleading at best, and deceptive at worst. This a better-than-average movie warrants a higher quality transfer and Amazon customers deserve more reliable and detailed product information.

A PITY WE HAVE TO SETTLE FOR THIS.......2006-12-31

Since this is the only version of this rather fine movie available, it is a pity that the buyer and viewer have to sit through a version whose DVD video transfer is so poor it looks like a VHS dupe of a slow speed VHS dupe shot through somebody's screen door. The audio quality, lo-fi for its day, would be acceptable if not for the incredible THD distortion especially noticeable on background music: even at low volume.

Furthermore, the 108 minutes running time claimed is not what you get: you get 90 minutes, period. Somebody decided to excise quite a lot of this movie. This was probably taken from a VHS tape edited by a TV studio for content and running time. In short, this DVD never saw, got next to, in any way associated with, nor ever had the chance to contemplate what its filmic potential might have been with a decent transfer. I could make a better slow speed VHS dupe from a VHS dupe than this piece of visual drek. The image quality is so poor I had some difficulty reading the opening credits due not to small font size, but rather to fuzziness.

There is no mention of running time on the box, not surprising, and no inside the box literature. Shame on Amazon for marketing this piece of cinematic disingenuousness and not giving more detials and accurate information.

You've got to watch what you are buying these days.

I like the movie, it is a very decent film and one not seen on the market for a long time. Too bad this is what we have to settle for. Someone should take the video distributor to task for their work.

Good for Low Budget Entertainment.......2003-10-05

To some minds the film may be seen as boring, but to others who have the talent of looking within the conversations between Evelyn and Matt will find the movie refreshing. The washateria location was unique though I got tired of it after the first forty minutes into the movie. I wanted the characters to venture out more and go more places together. The movie was refreshing. The conversations between Matt and Evelyn were realistic and it was interesting to see a white man and a black lady talk about a subject ( Racism & Violence ) so openly while not agreeing on the key points. These two actors had super chemistry even though Matt is considerably younger than Jonell ( She looks great for her age! ). Jonell is a wonderful actress and Christian Campbell was cute with his innocent, wild-eyed expressions. What got me was how Matt didn't know that some things he said were offensive to Evelyn. That alone made the couple have even more chemistry. I taped the movie on BET Starz! and I'm glad I did. It's a good film for people who are tired of the " ordinary " yet limited movies.

I caught "Next Time"-a low budget independent released in 1998-a couple of days on cable late at night.I actually watched the film in it's entrity(something I rarely do for films that I catch at random on television).I had a mixed opinion by the time it was over.

"Next Time"(directed by Alan L. Fraser) is the story of Matt,a young white boy from Ohio and Evelyn,a forty something African-
American mother of two who's trying to make in LA Riots-era Black Los Angeles(that's
when the film's set).Well,Matt(only 19) and Evelyn both wash clothes at a nearby laundrymat every Saturday at 10:OO PM.
As time goes on,they become friends(they even kiss) who share a lot of things in common than what would be expected:they're both lonely(Matt moved to LA just to be near an unrequited crush;
Evelyn has a no-good boyfriend and a deliquent son) and vurnable.
OK,so now I think you get the drift of the movie.

Now,this element of "Next Time" is very endearing.Two people who probably would just cross each other unfazed in the street actually open up and "bare their souls" to each other.That is one thing I really liked about the film.But..."Next Time" will somewhat scatterdash when it comes to it's meandering racial comment it wants to make.

Now if you actually believe that a film that covers a friendship
between a white kid and a black woman in Rodney King-era racial unceratainess wasn't going to adress race-you must be a bit slow(smile).That's expected and the director(also the writer of the film) could've dealt with it more thoughtfully.Instead the racial edge of the film is clusmy and undevolped.Not knowing what it really wants to say.In fact it bogs down an otherwise intresting film.That kind of turned me off
(and prevented me of giving "Next Time" a four star rating).

So all in all,"Next Time" was a film that has a great premise
yet very clumsy social comment BUT the relationship between
Matt(Christian Campbell) and Evelyn(Jonelle Carter) is enough to overlook it's mishaps.AT the end of the film,the laundrymat-
the setting of the "Next Time"-is borded up after being burned after the LA Riots and Matt takes a bus back home to Ohio.
Leaving a bittersweet end to a movie that take will leave both a
warm yet sometime eye-rolling impression on you.

There aren't many contemporary voices that people would unifiedly listen to on this subject. However, the subject matter very dramatically conveyed an 'active' voice that reaches out and catches your attention and pulls you into the situation. You can feel the struggle (in their trying to achieve some middle ground) ... you can feel the pain of each character, their confusion, despiration, joy, desire, doom and hopelessness, etc. The ending left me feeling 'disjointed' and 'sad'; saying 'a connection was almost achieved, but not cemented' ... and wondering, ...'will there ever truly really ever be a 'NEXT TIME' again?!' If so, ... when?
