A treasure-trove for Dream Theater fans, Live at Budokan presents an entire three-hour performance at Tokyo's famed Budokan arena on April 26, 2004, along with a bonus disc rich in supplementary material. Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003's Train of Thought. Disc 2 features an extended drum solo from percussionist extraordinaire Mike Portnoy; gear tours from guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (fascinating for lay people and downright revelatory for musicians); and a half-hour documentary on DT's 2004 stint in Japan punctuated by tantalizing snippets of band rehearsals. The shooting and editing for the concert are a music lover's dream, with lengthy shots that linger on the performances of individual band members. Disc 2 takes this even further with a multi-angle sequence of the 12-minute "Instrumedley."
Production values are extremely high: it's a widescreen presentation shot on high-def video and nicely mixed for multichannel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (with a thinner, collapsed version of the same for Dolby 2.0). It must be noted, however, that the center, subwoofer, and surround channels get jumbled right at 1:35:30 on disc 1. The front left/right channels remain in place, but the signals for the other four speakers play non-musical chairs. People listening in 2.0 will experience a brief dropout at that point. --Michael Mikesell

Customer Reviews:
Love this DVD..........2007-02-15
The 1st time I watched this show was on Rave HD at 330am and I could go to sleep. I stayed up 'till about 6am having to work in the morning. I'm saying this was Phenomenal. I loved it!!! Great Sound and Awsome Show. Next day I went searching for this DVD because I had to have it. I have watched it a couple of times, already!
Worth 10 Stars!.......2006-11-11
Great performance! Great video and audio quality! Great bonus features! Excellent concert!
awesome.......2006-11-10
Overall, this is an extremely awesome concert. I am a big fan of DT, and like pretty much all their stuff. The performance itself is pretty good, although the only truly special thing they do is the instrumedley and Jordan's keyboard solo. Other than that they pretty much just play their songs as you hear them on the album. If they had done more special things, it would have gotten a 5 star rating instead of 4. Other people complain about how the band really doesnt get into their music during the performance, but would say they did okay as far as that goes. Sure the singer doesnt get out from behind the mic stand, thats because half the time he is dragging it along with him, although i will say the band overall doesnt really get into it as much as most other metal bands, and thats probably why they have the video show up on the screens behind them. The special features are also pretty good, but i would not buy this concert just for those, backstage footage and things of that nature are cool but do not make a dvd good by themselves. Overall, i did think it was pretty cool, and i would recommend buying it if you like Dream Theater or just their genre of music in general.
Jaw Dropping........2006-06-22
Simply amazing... the multi-angle view of Instrumedley on the bonus disc is worth nearly the price of admission... but there are hidden pieces of astounding talent on display throughout the entire DVD... I don't think Dream Theater knows how to play something that's just nice, short, sweet, and simple. They pride themselves on pushing the boundaries, and they do so brilliantly in nearly every tune they compose! Overall this is a MUST OWN for any prog rock fan, any shred fan, any musician who plays guitar, bass, drums, or keyboard, or fan of those instruments.
My only complaint is that the guys aren't the most entertaining in the world. To some that's a complement: "shut up and play." But if I have to fish around for a complaint, that would be it. Otherwise this DVD is simply mind boggling.
In one word: "Amazing".......2006-06-19
I think this DVD is fantastic. This live performance is one the best i've seen. The music turns from heavy and angry to soft and melodic. The production is superb, the audio is great and the songs are played without a mistake. Once again these guys prove that they are amazing players. Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess and Myung are awesome with their instruments. LaBrie is singing better and more controlled than in previous tours. I give a 4 star rating because the song list it's a bit disapointing, it could have been better. But, if you are a die hard fan, get this DVD! It's a must.

Visually over rated.......2007-01-27
I am caught in a funny position.
I first bought the audio cd and was wowed by a group that I was not familar with. When I first heard it, I liked the sonsg but I did not love them. I also thought that the arrangements of the songs were sensational yet the musicianship was merely rudimentary. Repeated listenings allowed me to understand the drama and majesty of the songs as well as recognize how musically tight this band is. I am now a fan and eagerly waiting to see them live in March of 2007.
I hear about the DVD for the same concert cd that I have. It is described as being one of the best concert DVDs of all time. I assumed that this meant that there was something visually special about the DVD. I do not really see that.
The stage is beautiful, the songs are great, the playing is top notch yet..for the most part, teh band just stands there playing their instruments. Nobody is jumping around, nobody is getting all sweaty, nobody is projecting their soul...they are just playing the songs.
The songs are dramatic but the band does not play the songs in a dramatci manner.
I am not saying anything negative about this...it's just that it received such tremendous praise that I was expecting visually better.
Maybe I am old fashioned but I like to see jumping around, smashing instruments, screaming like crazy, "Rage Against the Machine" like fury.
A classic live show.......2006-12-10
Question: What do U2, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Drive-By Truckers, the Grateful Dead, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd have in common?
Answer: Among other things, they're all great live bands.
All of these bands made their reputations on the road, playing to packed crowds night after night, winning new converts in every town. Their albums are classics, to be sure, but if you ask die-hards about their favorite albums, responses will differ. One thing, though, that all fans will agree on, is that next time their favorite band is in town, those fans will be at the show, waiting for something miraculous. Now, you can add My Morning Jacket to that list.
Their new DVD, "Okonokos," is the DVD testament to their ability as a live band, and like U2's "Live From Slane Castle, Neil Young & Crazy Horse's "Live at the Fillmore East," Drive-By Truckers' "Live at the 40 Watt," The Grateful Dead's "Europe '72," Radiohead's "27 5 94 - The Astoria - London - Live," Led Zeppelin's "How the West Was Won" or Pink Floyd's "Pulse," this DVD is a definitive live document.
How many times have you seen a live DVD that made you stop what you were doing and just sit back and marvel at the musicianship involved, wishing that you could have been at that show, enjoying it with the rest of the crowd? I'm a bit of a concert junkie, and I've seen most of the bands I've mentioned (except for Zeppelin and the Dead), and they have all amazed me with their live shows. I'm now kicking myself for having missed several opportunities to see My Morning Jacket, but I'll correct that oversight at my next opportunity, believe me.
Negatives: Some people might deride this DVD for its silly frame story "concept" (it involves a Victorian party, a llama adoption, and a bear mauling, and yes, it's just as ridiculous as it sounds), but as dumb as it is, it doesn't impede the flow of the concert the way that Neil Young's "wacky scientist" (in "Rust Never Sleeps"), Zeppelin's "old wizard" (in "The Song Remains the Same"), or Alice Cooper's interminable Pythonesque skits (in "Billion Dollar Babies") all do. It mercifully shows up only at the beginning and end of the show (with a brief "dream sequence" in the middle), freeing the viewer up to hit fast forward and get on with the show at any time. And maybe one day, if this concert rightfully goes into the history books as one of the great live DVDs of its time, people will still debate the skit business the way they do with Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper:
"Man, those skits were stupid."
"Yeah, but that show was amazing."
"Yeah."
Also, some people might criticize the band for extending certain songs past the ten-minute mark. But if you're a fan of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin (or even, in some cases, The Grateful Dead), you'll know that it's a tightrope act. Sometimes ten minutes is excruciating, and sometimes it leaves you wanting more. I personally think that My Morning Jacket walked the tightrope pretty successfully throughout this show.
Overall, if you're a fan of live music (especially if you are fans of any of the aforementioned bands), check out this DVD. It's a classic live show and not one to be missed.
An amazing journey into the world of My Morning Jacket. .......2006-11-26
My Morning Jacket's Okonokos DVD is like a trip into another land. A land where a llama leads a sharply dressed man from a swank cocktail party to a magical live show in a lush forest setting. A land where the music is played loud and fast, but with a certain tenderness that is impossible to describe. A land where hair flies and notes drift and Jim James' falsetto and vocals with heavy reverb take you to a place that is both vintage and futuristic. (sidenote :I swear I watched this sober.)
This DVD is as close as you can get to a live MMJ show. The lights, the sounds, the intensity of the music. The excitement of the crowd and the great energy coming from a band who truly love what they are doing.
Easily one of the top music DVDS of all time. This, my friends, is rock and roll.
GREAT BAND , VERY GREAT CONCERT DVD.......2006-11-23
I'M VERY HAPPY TO HAVE SEE THIS GREAT BAND FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE PEARL JAM CONCERT IN ITALY, IT'S A VERY GREAT BAND THAT MAKE A GREAT DVD CONCERT, EXCELLENT ATMOPHERE AND SOUND IN THIS DVD!!
Finally, their greatness captured live........2006-11-11
I have only seen My Morning Jacket play twice, once at Bonnaroo, and they are by far, in my opinion, the best live band in the world. I was hoping they would make a DVD so I can watch them play live whenever I want, and finally one day, after I was complaining to my girlfriend that they didn't have a live dvd, I saw on their website that they were going to release this. I bought the Okonokos live album as well, and while I loved it, the DVD sounds 2x better. Every instrument seems to stand out, and Jim James' vocals are outstanding. It's nice to see their almost mythical live performance ability finally caught on video so anybody can see it. I've watched this probably 5 times already, and I'm amazed every time at how great everything sounds.
I'm seeing them this weekend in Indianapolis; can't wait. This is a band so good live, it's hard to get that excited about seeing any other band.

This American Masters documentary takes a solemn look at F. Scott Fitzgerald's life and literary legacy. While acknowledging his demons (alcoholism, his wife Zelda's mental illness), it only glancingly refers to his and Zelda's infamous antics and notorious partying. Instead, this 85-minute biography looks at the influence of his St. Paul, Minnesota, childhood, where he was the poorest in a well-to-do neighborhood, and the driving ambition that sent him to Princeton, where he never felt he measured up to his wealthier classmates. This obsession with class and money drove his writing and his marriage to Zelda, a socially prominent Southern belle. Weighing in are such literary luminaries as biographer A. Scott Berg and novelists E.L. Doctorow and Ward Just, as well as the usual host of scholars. These experts are balanced nicely with the reminiscences of those who knew the Fitzgeralds more intimately, including former neighbors and Zelda's childhood friends. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
American Masters presents an unparalleled portrait of the literary icon, providing an in-depth look at the writer's life and work. 90 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
The Romantic Egoist........2005-01-29
I just viewed this documentary last night and loved it. I must admit that I have not read Fitzgerald's books for many years but treasured the memories which were recirculated by this film. I read Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" not too long ago and it renewed some of my fascination with this literary master. His writing style is the envy of many and the best thing that can be said about "Winter Dreams" is that it showcases the way in which his life became the material of his stories. It is a pity that he died before realizing the success he would have after 1950, but then, perhaps he would not have had it any other way as the triumphs of his life made him lonelier than his failures.
A lofty appreciation.......2004-01-17
I expected this DVD to have some choice observations about Saint Paul, Minnesota, where the father of some beautiful rich girl (her name and picture are in this DVD, but it was so long ago) told the young F. Scott Fitzgerald that wealthy people like the Summit Avenue crowd did not expect their daughters to marry anyone who was as poor as F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is funny now, in the `if that really happened, how famous would that be?' kind of way, particularly if it happened to someone who is now as famous as F. Scott Fitzgerald, a great writer who was also smart enough to call Hemingway the real thing. Whatever F. Scott Fitzgerald was doing when he went to Princeton, he was not kept there long. Some great schools might have had much greater dropout rates than we are used to now, as a big law school at that time could be expected to flunk out a third of the entering students.
Zelda was from Montgomery, Alabama, where F. Scott Fitzgerald was a young army officer preparing for World War One. People who knew Zelda still remember those days, things they did, a song they sang, that Zelda's father was a judge and called her a hussy when she came home at 2 a.m. while she was still in high school. Waltzing through life was her main interest, but she was wild enough that she would be considered crazy after she became a mother. This DVD has a lot of music and dancing to try to capture the character of those times. Two of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novels have been turned into movies, and scenes from "The Great Gatsby" and "The Last Tycoon" are used to illustrate aspects of his life as well as the content of his writing.
My favorite time in his life is during a trip to Paris in 1924, when he wrote to his publisher that he had been pondering Gatsby as a character and thought he had found a way to capture him in a book that would be quite elegant. There are literature professors on the DVD who maintain their belief in F. Scott Fitzgerald's genius in spite of the difficulties of his life. It just magnifies whatever humiliation he was sensitive to, and the clips from the movie "The Great Gatsby" of the gas station at the junk yard on Long Island, New York, is so desolate that the question, "Your wife wants to move out West?" sounds like a personal problem that is obviously understandable. Then as now, the big money in entertainment was in Hollywood, and the clip from "The Last Tycoon" shows a writer being humiliated by a studio boss who knows that going to the movies is what everybody else does all the time. The great irony at the end is F. Scott Fitzgerald trying to write about Hollywood as if the people who knew how to make great amounts of money there were just as laughable at as the great rich hierarchies of the Midwest and East Coast. He was not healthy, and I think the DVD wraps up his life with a heart attack at the age of 44 in 1940 that came before Scott was finished with "The Last Tycoon." His attitude was strangely manifested in emitting an anatomy of his own desires, and millions of copies of his books were printed and might still be read before the readers of the world are finished with him.

Beautifully done!!.......2002-07-28
This trilogy was very well done: from storylines to acting. The performances by Wesley Snipes, Danny Glover and the grossly underrated Tate Donovan are particularly noteworthy. The subject matter in each tale touches a nerve--I believe the issues dramatized anyone can empathize with. Not to be missed!!
America's Dream.......2002-07-12
this movies title says it all. It is like three movies in one and each is as great as the other. I think what I loved the best is that in each story, although set in the past, the facts are still the same today. This movie definatley gives the viewer something to think about. It approaches life from a point on inproving ones standing while sticking to rights right and wrong is nobody. Any person can relate to these situations and the complexity of making these choices. And this movie gives a well rounded view from both sides of the story. A real eye opener.
Sweet Dreams for America.......2002-04-05
America's Dream is a fine film that should be viewed by all Americans, whether they be African-American, Caucasian-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, or other. It is a sweet story about the dreams of 3 folks, which are dreams we can all relate to. The acting is good and the stories are informative, as well as entertaining, which is why I recommend it for everyone, young and old alike. Wesley Snipes is definitely an actor that can play any role and make it believable (we are watching the character and not the fine actor), and Danny Glover is near the top of his game, also.

Description
Only a few short years ago, legal gambling was rare and regarded with suspicion if not moral indignation. Today, three quarters of our state governments run legal wagering in the form of lotteries, which Americans spend more on than movies, theatre and recorded music combined! Are lotteries really a painless panacea for increasingly tight state budgets, as many politicians say, or are they a dangerous threat to our society promoted by the very institutions that should be protecting us? Go to the heart of the issue with hard-hitting interviews with everyone from politicians including Senator Paul Simon to recovering gambling addicts who have lost thousands of dollars to the hollow allure of lotteries. And Robert Goodman, author of The Luck Business, reveals the secrets of this growing industry, from the real odds of winning to the surprising fate of many lottery winners. Are they a harmless escape from the pressures of daily life, or a ticket to misery? This is the show you must see before you take another chance on "A Dollar and a Dream."

DS PRIDE LIVES ON!.......2005-09-14
This DVD is a must-have for any Dream Street fan. The behind-the-scenes is really funny. Altogether the show is awesome. If you don't like or know about DS but are into POP/ROCK music, you'd probably enjoy this DVD. I even got my GUY friends that are into Hip-Hop and Rap, one's into country, to think that Dream Street was actually a pretty cool band. Unlike other bands you can actually relate to these guys. Although their not a band anymore it's still really cool. I'm not going to be rude and say you're stupid if you don't like this DVD,(but you are, in my opinion)but you shoud at least give it a try, and if you're having trouble finding a reasonable prise try Hastings and Sam Goody.
DS PRIDE 4 LYFe.
I luv!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dream Street!.......2005-08-08
Hey,
I'm 14 years old and I was ten when this came out. I remember them, and I loved them. And now, I foud them again and I want to collect everyting about them! The dvd is really cool. You can tell that they are not lip singing because sometimes they do go off key and they make some changes to the song and laugh and stuff. So, they can sing. Of course, I love!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesse McCartney, I have always loved him. So its cool to see him singing when he's young.
