Best of Thomas
Thomas fans have spoken and this Best of Thomas represents eight, viewer-selected favorite episodes. An insecure Thomas learns just how much he's valued in "Thomas Gets Bumped" while Percy learns an important lesson about fears and bravery in "Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon." Jealousy threatens to eliminate any chance of friendship between Thomas and Stepney in "Thomas and Stepney" and Thomas comes to embrace diversity in "A New Friend for Thomas." Thomas learns the virtues of hard work and patience in "Thomas Saves the Day," "A Big Day for Thomas," and "Trouble for Thomas." Finally, cooperation and pride culminate in a visit from the queen that Edward, Thomas, and Gordon will never forget in "Thomas Meets the Queen." This entertaining, 46-minute tape concludes with the sing-a-long tune "Really Useful Engine." --Tami Horiuchi
Best of Percy
Children love stories told by engaging storytellers, the winning formula of Thomas and Friends tales about a group of toy trains on the island of Sodor, based on the "Railway Series" by Reverend W. Awdry. This "best of" compilation of favorite Percy episodes was selected by preschool fans from around the world, a loyal bunch who can identify with the spunky and mischievous tank engine bearing a green #6. There are nine short stories here, narrated by George Carlin and Ringo Starr, which focus on a dilemma and end with a gentle moral message. Percy is usually in a predicament because of cheeky behavior, such as in "Percy Takes a Plunge," where he finds himself in a water hole, or worse still, covered in sticky goop in "A Scarf for Percy." And who can forget "Percy's Ghostly Trick" when, after telling some chilling ghost stories, Percy hits a cart of limestone and the dust turns him ghostly white, giving his friends a fright. Though Percy delivers mail, transports children, and helps other engines, he always finds time for practical jokes and ensuing misadventures. There are moments of bravery and bravado, heroism and humiliation tucked between plenty of mishaps. Preschool kids can relate to Percy's predicaments and his earnest desire to be useful and appreciated. They'll walk away with valuable lessons on friendship, resourcefulness and forgiveness. And train fanatics, young and old, will find plenty to enjoy with a bounty of railway terms and realistic train miniatures.
Best of James
A reliable line-up of commemorative stories comprises this notable best-of collection featuring James, the impish red engine famous among Sir Topham's Railway gang. George Carlin narrates the eight lively episodes where James is alternately hero and hellion, and gentle moral messages are sprinkled amid the mishaps. Preschool fans will recognize most of their favorite stories like "James Goes Buzz Buzz," where our namesake transports a mob of angry bees and learns a stinging lesson in the process; or "James and the Fruitful Day," a humorous reminder that humility is a virtue whereas pride can lead an engine down the wrong track. Kids relate to James' predicaments, misplaced bravado, and earnest desire to be useful as they tuck away pint-sized proverbs on kindness, forgiveness, and friendship. (Ages 2 to 7) --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2007-05-17

This collection is splendid, many hours of enjoyment for children, turn on the DVD and watch them enjoy!!!

Simply Superb!

3 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2006-12-05

As stated before, the dvds open with several minutes of commercials. My experience was that we could fast forward through some of them, except on the Thomas dvd, which forces you to watch them all. There are also several logos that you are forced to watch.

Let me tell you something - when your two-year-old son has just had surgery and has to stay at home to recover, and wants to see Thomas, the last thing he wants is a bunch of logos, fbi warnings, and commercials.

The narrators are inconsistent. I prefer the british narrators, especially Ringo, but this set is a real mess, mixing the actors and wandering in and out of sequence.

There also seems to be an emphasis on big messy accidents in this set, which gets a bit scary for the little ones.

Okay, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Very good........2006-09-30

This is an exellent DVD set.Don't listen to what the others say, they say its bad,and I don't care for the 5 minutes of commercials, they are actully intresting. They also have a cool way of doing the song inbetween episodes, which is showing thier moments. This is really good, but I actully brought a set at Best Buy which includes the Best Of Gordon aswell. The DVDs show old episdoes re-narrarated by George Carlin. In conclusion, you might as well get this DVD set.

1 out of 5 stars not good at all - so disappointed.......2006-04-15

If you already have other newer DVDs, don't buy this set. There are alot of overlapping episodes (well, hence, "the best of..."). The quality is very very bad, they should put in a little effort to remaster everything. Also, the episodes are out of chronological order. Neither of the 3 DVDs hold my son's interest for too long, and he is a MAJOR Thomas fan.

1 out of 5 stars Poor set.......2006-04-11

I'm not steeped in Thomas the Tank Engine lore; my son showed some interest in the program and it looked like a pretty good series, so we decided to get him this DVD set. However, as much as I appreciate the fine model train artistry (it is awesome!) and George Carlin's narration, I just can't get into this series.

First and foremost, I think it is AWFUL that you have to watch 5 minutes of commercials before you can watch any of the Thomas DVD. The DVD prohibits skipping the loud, tedious commercials. Because of this, this DVD never gets watched (1 of 3). If you don't mind having to watch 5 minutes of commercials (or start the DVD and come back 5 minutes later to watch it), this won't bother you as much as it does us.

Also, as has been mentioned, the stories are in a completely jumbled order, so its difficult to piece together a linear narrative of how the characters develop. If you don't know much about Thomas and his friends (like me) I would not recommend this series. On its face, the series looks very appealing, but in the end, simple goofs in putting together the DVD make it aggravating to watch and difficult to fully appreciate.

Art imitates life in this romantic comedy, which casts Reynolds and Hawn as a successful Hollywood screenwriting team. Their harmonious working and romantic relationship goes south when they decide to get married after years of living together. Written by and based on the lives of writers Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin, the film is a decidedly bittersweet affair: after all, Levinson and Curtin got married, then divorced, just like the characters in the movie. Consequently, there's less real humor than kidding as the relationship develops cracks, chinks, and leaks, before foundering altogether. Still, Reynolds and Hawn have a likable chemistry because neither is trying too hard. Watch for a particularly funny and crass cameo by Ron Silver, as a big-shot director they wind up working for. --Marshall Fine

Description

After five successful years of living and working together, a couple decide to get married. But what they don't count on is how to survive the honeymoon -- especially one that involves meeting each other's family.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY BEST .......2007-02-12

This is one of my best Goldie Hawn's movies.
interesting plot ....good feeling ....realistic.
Sweet Goldie and fascinating Reynolds

3 out of 5 stars Chop Off the Ends and it's Pretty Good.......2006-03-16

Based on the real-life experiences of Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, this 1982 romantic comedy works best in the middle, when it's on the road. Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn are longtime screenwriting partners and roommates until Burt pushes for marriage. Goldie reluctantly agrees, and immediately after the civil ceremony the couple launches on a lengthy road trip to meet each other's parents. The trip forms the lion's share of the film, and much of it works quite well. Jessica Tandy & Barnard Hughes (as Goldie's parents in Buffalo) and Audra Lindley & Keenan Wynn (as Burt's folks in northern Virginia) absolutely steal the show. Before and after these stayovers, however, the film falls a bit flat, mainly because the Bandit and the Girl In My Soup are never particularly believable as a couple. Nonetheless, the middle of the film provides sufficient laughs to make it worth a rental. Just skip right to the train trip and turn it off when Burt and Goldie get back to L.A.

5 out of 5 stars Best Friends.......2005-09-23

This movie is timeless. I thought it was hilarious when it was first released in the theaters, and found it the same all these years later. Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn at their best! I would say, if you enjoyed the movie Grumpy Old Men, you will find this as entertaining. I was so happy to find it on DVD and add it to my library.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated films........2005-03-02

Most people I know have not seen this movie. In my opinion, it is very underrated. I love it. What's funny is when they visit each other's parents. Jessica Tandy plays Goldie's mom, and she is wonderful. Goldie doesn't want to sleep with Burt in her old room at her childhood home: "This is my teenage room. It's not for sexual relations, it's for slumber parties."

5 out of 5 stars Great flick! I'll second the other five star reviews........2004-02-11

But if you're looking for the scene where Goldie is briefly topless in the shower, forget the DVD. Either the widescreen format cut it off or this is the later edited for TV version. Stick to the original VHS tape version.

A breath of fresh air in a stale genre, Zoe Clarke-Williams's canny look at the catty world of college cliques is the smartest dissection of the complex world of class envy, social acceptance, and the seduction of privilege since Heathers. But this drama plays it for tragedy. Local working-class girl Mia Kirshner is transformed from social outcast to campus Cinderella and adopted into the hedonistic party world of a trio of rich fun-loving sorority princesses (Meredith Monroe, Dominique Swain, and Rachel True), and comes out the other end in a drug-induced coma. Confidently directed and elegantly constructed in puzzle-piece flashbacks, this sensitive, sympathetic, smartly made drama is refreshingly free of glib moralizing, the rare young-adult film that twists the usual clichés and leaves its audience with more questions than answers. The DVD also features an audio commentary track by director Zoe Clarke-Williams. --Sean Axmaker

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Slick, subtle, and worth a look see.......2006-08-03

This is a movie I did not fully appreciate until after it was over and I wanted to watch it again. The premise is, poor girl Alicia goes to a rich person's school where everyone except her is amoral, meaning in plain English they like sex and drugs. But wait a minute. Who is really into sex and drugs in this movie? Who is really envious of whom? Alicia, who is supposed to be the moral poor girl, ends up in hospital due to a drug overdose. Is Hadley, who is far wealthier than Alicia, really envious of her and not the other way around? Why do we feel such intense sympathy for the comatose Alicia? And why is some of the music, especially the music that plays at the end while the credits are running, so haunting?

This film plays with your mind as you watch it and does not get caught in the process. Great acting doesn't hurt, either.

This movie critic says, check it out.

2 out of 5 stars If You Want to See Soccer Moms Playing Undergraduates.......2005-10-03

"New Best Friend" is another entry in the "steal another woman's life" sub-genre; the best of which are "Single White Female" and "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle"; the worse of which you can catch almost any afternoon on the Lifetime Channel. For some reason this type of identity theft happens exclusively to women.

There are just two basic ways to play this type of story. You can make the woman evil at the beginning and let the audience watch knowingly as she hatches and implements her evil scheme. Or you use misdirection to make her appear a good person, as a seemingly unplanned series of events break in her favor until she is revealed to be evil in the climatic scene. Unfortunately the makers of "New Best Friend" could not decide how they wanted to play it and things crash and burn early. We first meet Alicia (Mia Kirshner) scamming the college's financial aid office for scholarship money. We now know that she is a bad person and will view all her subsequent activity with suspicion. But the director and editor apparently forgot that this revelation had been made and spend the next 50 minutes laying misdirection to make us think that Alicia is a good person. This introduces the only element of suspense, not about whether she is evil but about when the director and editor will wise up and stop wasting our time with transparent misdirection.

"New Best Friend" suffers more than most from the teen movie curse of a cast too old to be portraying undergraduate students. There are really only two big parts, Hadley (Meredith Monroe) and Alicia (Kirshner). They were 31 and 26 respectively at the time of the production. It almost works for the 26 year-old Kirshner when she plays the mousy version of Alicia but it becomes glaring when she is transformed into the glamed-up version of Alicia. Monroe's casting is simply a joke, about like having Nicholette Sheridan try to pass as a classmate on "Lizzie McGwire". She looks much closer to a mid-life crisis than to a term paper.

The producers must have owed a lot of favors because this age issue extends to most of the supporting characters. Taye Diggs who plays the town sheriff is younger than most of the students.

The basic setup is that Hadley and two other rich party girls (played by Dominque Swain-age 21 and Rachel True-age 35) are undergrad roommates at college. They share (as their student residence) a mansion that is nicer and better furnished than the mansion on Real World-New Orleans (a premise more believable than soccer moms playing students). Alicia moves into the mansion and begins to take over Hadley's life. At least that way Swain finally gets a roommate from her own generation so the two can have a lesbian scene. Swain's supporting performance is the only good thing about "New Best Friend" and her love scene with Kirshner is fantastic, so cool and artsy that it doesn't fit with any of the other segments, maybe it was subcontracted out to a good director and cinematographer.

The unintentionally hilarious story is presented in a series of dreary flashbacks of rampant sex and nonstop parties, each proceeded by a shot of a comatose Alicia in a hospital bed. About half of Kirshner's screen time is spent lying motionless with a tube in her mouth. Not a good career move Mia.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

5 out of 5 stars Cut Them Some Slack - New Best Friend Rocks!.......2005-03-01

As both a big fan of this movie and a film student, I feel that critics have been quick to judge this film as bad trash. This film has a sexy edge to it, that many other films in the "teen film" genre dare to exhibit. New Best Friend fullfills a fantasy for those girls who secretly desire to live dangerously and party every night, without it actually becoming a reality. The house is every girl's dream, and these girls are alluring and suavely tempting. The acting is far from terrible, and it was great to see Meredith Monroe in a more sophisticated and darker role than her role as Andie in Dawson's Creek. Dominique Swain once again puts in an A+ effort for her role as the cheeky deviant Sydney. For anyone who loved films like Tart and Cruel intentions, this is the film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Taye Diggs Owns.......2004-03-22

New Best Friend is one of those films that grabs your attention and maintains your suspicion all the way through until the incredible ending. The screenwriting is nothing short of miraculous and Taye Diggs' ability to capture the role of the school detective is truly awe-inspiring. Why Diggs' wasn't up for an Oscar is beyond me and others of his extensive fanbase. If you want an example of acting at it's finest, tune into the scene featuring the drug dealer and witness the intesity Diggs' displays. While the rest of the acting is rather lackluster, Diggs' performance pinpoints him as the obvious catalyst of this marvel of the modern film making industry.

      4 out of 5 stars A great movie for a hot date!.......2003-11-13

A poor girl who falls in with rich girls suffers an overdose, and the local sheriff wannabe is brought in to investigate. The rich girls are young and very attractive, especially when they're partying in their spaghetti-strapped dresses. And the poor girl, played by Mia Kirschner, is no slouch in the looks department herself with her dark features and jet black hair.

Mia eventually ingratiates herself with all of the friends; smoking, drinking, and doing drugs - and sharing dark secrets - like when she and Dominique Swain discover that both of them had been molested by their fathers when they were ten-years-old, which causes them to bond by exploring each other's mouths with their tongues, pawing at each other's clothes, and then falling asleep in each other's arms soon afterwards.

Mia then uncovers that Rachel True, a gorgeous fair-skinned black girl, is bulimic; and Mia offers to help her quit when she's ready. Rachel is touched, but rather than make it with Mia, she shares a deep soul kiss with Ms. Swain to continue an on-going relationship with Dominique (who is bisexual).

Dominique is on a roll, but the only girl among her circle of friends she doesn't kiss is Meredith Monroe, who plays Hadley, the story's main character - and main suspect! Meredith looks a lot like Natasha Henstridge (`Ghosts of Mars'), so watching her is definitely easy on the eyes. The most risque thing she does in the movie, though, is get naked (from the back) with her boyfriend in bed. But her performance as a seemingly innocent and helpful best friend is excellent.

Besides Meredith, another fine appearance is made by Taye Diggs as this Southern college town's interim sheriff. He approaches his task with sensitivity and determination, and it is through his eyes - and the flashbacks that he's told - that we get to enjoy the girls' divulged sensuality.

Taye solves the crime, and one of the girls is brought to justice. She ends up behind bars at the movie's end - while we see Dominique, asleep and naked in bed - and lying between both her own boyfriend and another girl! (Gee, I don't remember college life to be this good!)

This movie is well produced - and well paced - and Dominique (who I loved in `Lolita') is definitely fun to follow. This would be a great film to share on a really hot date. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars We love it!.......2006-02-16

When I watched Arthur at the first time was love at the first sight!, and now my daugthers (5 and 2) love him too. This DVD is just perfect because it talks about Buster leaving Elmwood City and how hard is that for him and for Arthur, and we just had a big move. Kids can learn a lot about dealing with their own problems with the show. Also has a story about DW and a deer she wants to take home. You are going to love as much as we do.

The appearances of two ex-Beatles, including the late George Harrison, are among the principal attractions in this hour-long 1985 TV show, which spotlights one of the prime movers behind the rock-and-country blend known as rockabilly. Carl Perkins, who died in 1998, was the composer of "Blue Suede Shoes" and other classics, as well as a highly influential guitar player. Here he's joined by a host of luminaries, including Eric Clapton, musical director Dave Edmunds, Rosanne Cash, and members of the Stray Cats, in addition to Harrison and Ringo Starr, who perform the Perkins tunes ("Matchbox" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby") that the Beatles recorded lo, these many decades ago. But star power notwithstanding, it's Perkins's show all the way. Not only can the man still play, but he's clearly basking in all the attention--as is Harrison, whose rare live performances should be treasured all the more now that he's gone. --Sam Graham

      Description

This classic show, featuring Perkins, along with Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, Slim Jim Phantom and others, was recorded live at London's Limehouse Studios in 1985 and features Harrison & Starr in their first reunion gig since the '70's.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible piece of music history caught on film.......2007-01-19

This has got to be one of the most fun exciting videos I have watched. I got the VHS format instead of the DVD(which I normally would)because of the many reviews claiming lousy sound on the DVD. My tape was factory fresh, still in the shrink wrap. It was incredible to say the least to see Carl Perkins in fine form along with George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Eric Clapton. They were all young, good looking, and at the top of their game and full of fun and excitement to be there for one of their great friends & mentors. I can recommend the VHS format for sound and my picture was great although somebody should do this thing right on DVD to save it for posterity. I would recommend it to any serious fan of classic Rock and Roll, much less fans of the Beatles, Sun Records/Nashville, Rockabilly, etc.. Get it while you can!

2 out of 5 stars 5 STARS FOR THE SHOW. 2 STARS FOR THE AUDIO ON THE DVD VERSION........2007-01-10

Much has been said about how close to perfection the show is. And it IS. If ever an opinion was a fact, that's a fact jack. So let me be very clear - the show itself is above and beyond 5 stars. I want to instead rant and rave about the mediocre audio quality of this particular dvd transfer here. Anybody who doesn't complain never owned the VHS before, and so of course they must think the sound can't get any better. It CAN. The picture on the dvd is fine, the audio is not terrible, but OH, if you had the VHS before, you'd know what you're missing. I thought I just had ungrateful amateur ears until a) I looked on the second page and started seeing that other people were complaining about the sound on this dvd and 2) sellers are still selling the VHS at full price here on amazon because a lot of people must be complaining about the dvd quality. I assumed I would see a bunch of penny listings, but it's going to be worth it to me to buy the vhs back for $10-15 and transfer it to dvd, and now beg Eric Clapton and his people, Olivia Harrison and her people, Carl's family, Ringo - somebody - RE-RELEASE THIS AS A SPECIAL EDITION DVD WITH OUTTAKES AND LOADS OF SPECIAL FEATURES AND, ABOVE ALL, REMASTER THAT AUDIO. PLEASE! For all those who agree with this last statement, say you find this review "helpful."

I saw this when it was 1st shown on Cinemax and loved it then...love it now. Dave Edmunds is so often ignored and so understatedly great..I thought I'd mention him here. Carl Perkins...so gracious and appreciative. All of his "rockabilly buddies" seem so excited to be in his presence. It is a great show!

5 out of 5 stars Skip the full course meal, just go straight to dessert.......2006-12-17

So just why would anyone buy this set when the full season sets are available? Well, maybe you don't want to buy each and every season or maybe you just want to watch the some of the best episodes without digging through each season. I agree that if you've never seen the show this would be a confusing way to get into it and I don't really recommend it for that but if you were a regular viewer of Friends when it was on the air you'll pretty much remember what led up the situations in the episode.

Sure, if I'd put the DVD together myself I may have included some other episodes as well, but I thought these episodes were definitely highlights. I'd also recommend "Friends-The Series Finale" and "Friends-The One With All The Weddings" and if you care for them, "Friends-The One With All The Birthdays," and "Friends-The One With All The Babies." Sets like these are a great option to remember the show without having to over invest in it. I really wish there were similar Seinfeld and Frasier DVD sets like this.

3 out of 5 stars It's Silly To Buy This Instead of The Complete Seasons!.......2005-06-20

Friends, it's an awesome show but I think it's silly to buy the best of DVD collections when you can buy the complete seasons on DVD and get all of the episodes and not someone elses idea of what the best episodes are!

1 out of 5 stars The "best" (?) of friends...........2004-03-27

...Now THAT'S an oxymoron if ever there was one.

4 out of 5 stars Great Discs To NOT Get.......2004-02-11

I love FRIENDS and got these discs as a Christmas present when they first came out. The episodes are all very funny and the extra footage and special features are great. The problem is that they are all somebody else's favorite episodes. Not that there's anything wrong with these, but if it had been up to me some of the ones included would have been replaced by others.

That being the case, why would you want these discs when the full seasons are now available. If you're a fan of this series, skip these and get the full season discs. Then you can watch whichever episodes are YOUR favorites instead of somebody else's idea of the best episodes. If you're a casual fan or are just interested in a sampling of FRIENDS episodes, these discs are fine and I recommend them, but if you're really into the show, don't mess around -- get the full season discs.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the full seasons instead!!!.......2003-12-13

This disc is really not worth buying, for a little more money you should buy the full season sets! You get a lot more for your money and you can watch them in order instead of broken up like in this set. For the true Friends fans, this would be a waste of money!!

At first, Best Laid Plans comes off like yet another all-flash-no-substance crime thriller, but it's one of those rare films that end better than they start. Nick (Alessandro Nivola from Face/Off), broke and desperate to get out of his suffocating small town, agrees to take part in a drug heist. When his partners get caught, he has less than a week to come up with $15,000 or suffer the consequences. When his college buddy Brice (Josh Brolin--Flirting with Disaster) comes back to town, Nick and his girlfriend Lissa (Reese Witherspoon) hatch a plan to bilk Brice out of a rare collectible. Of course, things go wrong--which is where things get entertaining. The plot could use a few more twists to really crackle, but the surprises it does have work, and the ending is both clever and affecting. Along the way, the best scene features a drug dealer who quotes economic theory from the bible of capitalism, The Wealth of Nations. In the past few years, Witherspoon has turned in superb performances in such varied movies as Freeway, Pleasantville, and especially Election; Best Laid Plans doesn't make much use of her talent, but she's always watchable. --Bret Fetzer

      Description

Enter Nick's old college chum Bryce (Josh Brolin), a seemingly easy mark who holds the ticket to the couple's salvation. But before long, all three young people will find themselves entwined in a dangerous web of betrayal and seduction that L.A. Weekly calls "a treasure map of double crosses and hairpin turns."

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-12

A Professor of literature has a woman accuse him of rape. The Professor goes berserk. I won't give more of the story away. Basically, the movie is a thriller and there are two twists in it. The first twist I saw from a mile away but I was surprised about the second one. The good thing about this movie was the romantic story, you felt the actors actually had some chemistry and genuinely cared for each other. This is in contrast to other movies where there is no character development and the romantic portion of the story feels forced.

I was expecting an exciting thriller. The movie's script is average, the acting is OK, and the ending was not that good. For me, there was no likable character in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Another Film du noir.......2006-06-10

I saw the scene, where they have Lissa chained to the pool table and gagged in the basement.I didn't understand most of the movie. I bet Kim Possible,Ron Stoppabl, and Rufus can deal with them.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best laid film, but it gets extra points for originality.......2006-03-22

I must say that 'Best Laid Plans' is in a league of it's own. I have never seen a movie that took me for the turns this film did, and anyone who says that they guessed the ending is just lying to make their hatred for this movie resonate. This film may not be perfect, and there are some boring scenes as they try to hard to explain the state Nick is in, but the overall plot of this film is one I've never seen done before. From the opening scene in the bar when Reese enters till you find her chained up in the basement and she tells Nick "we're screwed" you start to realize that what you think you know, you don't...and thats the case throughout this entire movie. From the start to the finish you have no clue who's involved in what. When Nick (Nivola) makes the bad choice of stealing some dope with friends and his friends are caught he ends up at the bad end of the gun. He has just a few days to get $15,000 or he's going to be worse than dead...Then his friend Brice (Brolin) moves back and Nick and Lissa (Witherspoon) come up with a plan, only it backfires, and then they find a way out of it, but that plan backfires and before you know it their back where they started, litterally. THis movie, for all it's twists and turns and ORIGINALITY, while not being perfect still is a recomended film for anyone who wants to see something fresh and different than the normal popcorn munching drama. 4 1/2 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Contrived, convoluted, but somewhat watchable.......2005-12-28

This mostly forgotten thriller starring Reese Witherspoon (Lissa) and Alessandro Nivola (Nick) suffers from a mightily contrived plot and a "Huh?--What happened?" ending. Nick is a guy who works at the local recycling plant (that's a new workplace for celluloid protagonists) who is about to inherit some big bucks from his father who has just kicked the bucket.

Meanwhile some of his coworkers are scheming up a plot to...well, no spoilers here. Let's just say that the viewer does not find out about this plot until the end, and then it seems a little...well, lame.

Along comes Lissa looking mighty fine and they fall in love, although I must say the chemistry certainly didn't spark up the screen. Now comes complication number one: the old man blew almost all his money and what he didn't blow the IRS is grabbing. Because of this Nick gets tempted into driving a get-away car for a drug rip off... Things go awry and Nick ends up in deep doo-doo, and in desperation gets Lissa to help him rip off an old school chum...which... Well, what these people do in desperation is a little on the unbelievable side.

I'm sorry that's all vague, but at least it's enough information to let you know if you actually saw this movie or not. Now, if you like probability-challenged, convoluted plots with loose ends and a lot of unlikely twists and turns, you might find this movie interesting. And if you like Reese, and you should, you might also find a reason for sticking around until the end. I know I did. She does a good job and looks good doing it.

Bottom line: although the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, it can also be said that the most meticulously contrived plots sometimes turn out about as convincing as pseudoscience. Incidentally the title is a paraphrase of the 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns's line: "The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men/Gang aft a-gley."

5 out of 5 stars shocking and a very hooking story.......2005-02-26

      it's one amazing, strange movie
it really takes a while to understand it at times
but it has many valuable lessons one can learn
Witherspoons performance is shattering and remarkable among other things. a great movie. will be seen more times then I can count the next times I play it in my player

A reliable lineup of commemorative stories makes up this notable best-of collection featuring James, the impish red engine famous among Sir Topham's railway gang. George Carlin narrates the eight lively episodes where James is alternately hero and hellion, and gentle moral messages are sprinkled amid the mishaps. Preschool fans will recognize most of their favorite stories like "James Goes Buzz Buzz," where our namesake transports a mob of angry bees and learns a stinging lesson in the process, or "James and the Fruitful Day," a humorous reminder that humility is a virtue whereas pride can lead an engine down the wrong track. Kids relate to James's predicaments, misplaced bravado, and earnest desire to be useful as they tuck away pint-sized proverbs on kindness, forgiveness, and friendship. (Ages 2 to 6). --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars James Is My Favorite Character!.......2004-10-10

This video has the best James stories on it. Yep, all of your favorite James stories are on here like No Jokes For James, James Goes Buzz Buzz, James In A Mess, and Old Iron. The only James stories that I liked that isn't on here was James & the Trouble with trees(that is my favorite James stories, even one of my favorite stories). It's to bad the music video "James the Really Splended Engine" wasn't made sooner because that would have been a the icing on the cake to this already great video, but "Don't Judge A Book Be It's Cover" is a great music video.
Anyway, I'd recommend this video if you want to see James at his best=^_^=

5 out of 5 stars James Is The Man!!!.......2004-08-08

James is my son's favorite engine. Most likely becasue they are both stubborn and bull-headed! Anyway, I strongly recommend this dvd to anyone who loves the Thomas series. As a parent who often watches the shows with my children, the James stories are really some of the most enjoyable. As I stated previously, James hates to follow directions and this usually gets him in trouble; however, James always suffers the consequences of his actions. There's some pretty good lessons taught in these stories for kids of all ages (even me!). The dvd versions are great. No more rewinding VHS tapes over and over! The Thomas Series dvds are one of the best babysitters any parent could ask for. Add to cart now.

5 out of 5 stars James is one of our favorite characters.......2004-02-22

Thomas has been with my family for almost a decade. We have every oringinal tape and most of the mixes. What I like about the Best of's is that you can watch a whole tape of episodes just about your favorie character. James is one of the most popular engines and it's no suprise this one was released. He has more videos named after him than any other engine besides Thomas. James is often naughty or rude and the other engines and Sir Topham Hat shpw him what it means to be a useful engine. He's often the most boastful engine and sometimes I prefer episodes without him. I think these are great episodes for James fans and you should definetly buy this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not our favorite Thomas video.......2003-08-07

We have several Thomas videos and this is not our favorite -- James is just too ill-tempered and cranky to make this enjoyable. In nearly every story he's criticizing or making fun of other engines. He usually gets his comeuppance in the end, but overall it's just not a positive experience. There are plenty of other good Thomas videos to buy besides this one.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of James!!.......2003-07-21

Of all the videos in my Thomas collection, I have to say this is my most favorite. The stories on this video are: A Proud Day for James, James in a Mess, Old Iron, No Joke for James, James Learns a Lesson, Percy, James, and the Fruitful Day, James Goes Buzz Buzz, Time for Trouble, and the music video Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover. Once again it sports George Carlin's superb narrations. I thought they should have put in the music video James the Really Splendind Engine instead of Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover until I realized this video was planned in 2001 and James the Really Splendind Engine wasn't seen until 2002. My favorite story is A Proud Day for James and No Joke for James is very funny. I don't have a least favorite.
