The winning comic finesse of Reese Witherspoon drives Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde. It's astonishing that the sequel could possibly be daffier than the first movie, but Legally Blonde 2 leaves reality behind like an unflattering outfit. Unemployed lawyer Elle Woods (Witherspoon) sets off to our nation's capitol to ban cosmetics testing on animals, after discovering that her beloved chihuahua's own mother is being used as a test subject. Washington, D.C., becomes a testing ground for Elle's mettle, as she grapples with callous committees, backstabbing representatives, and devious aides to get her bill considered by Congress, with some help from her sorority sisters and her hairdresser friend Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind). Witherspoon bursts with charisma and dazzles with sheer performing skill; she's the comic heir to screwball comedienne Carole Lombard--which is high praise. Also featuring Bob Newhart and Sally Field. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Red, White & Bland.......2007-07-06

I'm a bit at odds with Legally Blonde 2. The tension between the real world and Elle's naivete which constituted the parameters in the first film's dialectic (and which gave it meaning) is here wanting. Her opposition are straw dogs set up to bring Elle's ingenuity into relief. Her artless, winning ways are ridden on the "means and ways committee" of Elle's too easily won-over circle of admirers. They must have all seen her come out on top in the first movie since her accomplishments are cited by Regina King's impressive lawyer early on.

The situations are entertaining, but silly (and in some instances tasteless). And that's okay too. Silliness can be entertaining, but not emotionally engaging, and that's where the film breaks ranks from the earlier effort.

Witherspoon is still fun to watch in her take-no-prisoners Pollyanna ways that proably sounds a ubiquitous chord. Regina King more than ably fills the shoes of Selma Blair's similarly agonistic role, as an intolerant, envious lawyer who finally lets her inherent decency get the better of her.

The movie? Too bad it all seems like a rehash of the first one, at best; at worst, a bit too silly and predictable.

2 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment.......2007-01-17

I purchased this DVD a few years ago and still have not watched it all. I really enjoyed the first Legally Blonde movie. I am a fan of Reece Witherspoon and have several of her movies in my DVD collection.I found her performance as Elle totally over the top! Who ever wrote this script turned Elle into some kind of superhuman. Elle has the ability to change how Washington operates just by being Elle. (complete with the stupid snap cup congress voting routine)

Although the cast was great, the script and the directing was sub-par. The director added a pink glow above Elle's head whenever she was in a scene. This was pointed out by the director in the DVD extra segment.Did he get this idea from Touched by an Angel? Thank goodness they never made Legally Blonde 3.Although Elle Woods' movie career maybe over,Reece Witherspoon's career continues to shine!I believe she has totally outgrown her Legally Blonde chararcter.

4 out of 5 stars Laugh a Little.......2006-11-16

Even if you missed Legally Blonde, this comedic outing is just for fun and can stand alone. Elle Woods takes on the Washington insiders and keeps coming out on top through a combination of sheer luck, connections, and by blondely working out the problems based on her earlier sorority experience.

Somewhat dippy, but fun anyway. I thought the grand speech didn't really have what it took to bring about the happy ending, but hey, you have to suspend your brain a bit with this story anyway.

Enjoy it for what it is and don't expect great literature, just a fun little film.

The DVD included some interesting interviews with the actors and director.

Brilliant. One of the best sea / ocean horror movies of that time. Richard Harris is brilliant and the special effects are great. A must have if you loved the Jaws movies. XXXX

4 out of 5 stars It's no "Jaws", but it's wonderfully entertaining just the same.......2007-06-10

The success of Spielberg's 1975 first to crack the 100 million mark landmark film Jaws spawned a whole series of "us against it" genre films of which several were water-based like the dreadful Tentacles and the rest were equally poor only taking place on land such as the campy Day of the Animals. However, a few were standouts and "Orca" was one of them.

Wonderfully and sensitively acted by the late great Richard Harris (A Man Called Horse and Camelot), the always convincing Charlotte Rampling (The Verdict), and the ever noble Will Sampson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Poltergeist II: The Other Side). It is also memorable as the first film for Bo (10) Derek who manages to actually keep her clothes on in this film.

The storyline is intelligent and believable. There are no memorable cliches or unimportant scenes. The film is compact and to the point at a brief 92 minutes. The direction and editing is sturdy and skillful. The photography is absolutely brilliant. Every shot is beautifully filmed. The music is, unfortunately, forgettable and uninspiring.

Don't let the comparisons to "Jaws" scare you off. This film may not be in that ballpark, but its field is only a block or two away.

This strange fable of a movie, like other movies by Japanese director Shohei Imamura (The Eel, Dr. Akagi), is both enchanting and perplexing. After being laid off, a salesman (Koji Yakusho) travels to a small town to seek out a treasure hidden by an elderly friend of his. Instead, he finds a young woman who has a peculiar condition: she releases gushes of water when she has orgasms. Meanwhile, her grandmother waits for the man who left her years ago to return; an African marathon runner passes their house every day; and three fishermen cast their lines into the nearby river, for the water the young woman vents attracts an abundance of fish. The baffling significance of the movie's more fantastic elements doesn't keep Warm Water Under a Red Bridge from also being charming, strangely sincere, and surreally comic. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From legendary filmmaker Shohei Imamura comes this comic fable for adults. A frustrated unemployed architect learns of a treasure hidden inside an old house near a red bridge in a remote fishing village. Upon arriving he encounters a beautiful young woman with an unusual condition who lives with her grandmother in the old house. The relationship that builds between them becomes both vital and volatile. In Japanese with English subtitles

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Imamura's best!.......2007-01-07

I love this movie and I love these reviews too! Mr. Darragh O'Donoghue's review pretty much says it all, but I can't help but add my voice to the chorus of praise and try to lift this one to 5 star status!

Imamura makes complicated, multi-layered films where the drama becomes so involved that the intentions of the characters can sometimes get muddled, and crucial plot points often pop up much later than we're used to. It's kinda like life!

Yasuke (played by the always likable Koji Yakusho) is an unemployed salaryman visiting his hobo/philosopher buddy, Taro, while away from home on a job interview. Taro dies, but his tall tales of treasure in a small village home compel Yasuke to investigate. The house is near a red bridge...

To make a long story short; Yasuke finds the red bridge, and the house, and a beautiful woman living there, Saeko (played by the erotically coy Misa Shimuzu) and a torrid and, ahem... unusual affair begins.

A wild cast of characters, bizarre circumstances, and comical situations play throughout the film, but one thing I really enjoyed was the almost Herzog like physicality of this film. It somehow drives home the life affirming purity of sex. I noticed it from the first moment Yasuke reaches that beautiful red bridge and slaps his hand solidly on the railing. Yasuke gets a job as a fisherman (very physical work) and pulls up nets full of big tuna, he outruns an african olympic runner (who is training w/ his japanese coach throughout the film) to be with Saeko. And in one scene in particular, after sex, Yasuke does some random pull ups and then opens the window and stands naked in front of a mountain landscape! Yakusho gives a very lively and physical performance against Imamura's bright and colorful palette. This is in sharp contrast to the job interview scene and the scene with the nagging phone call from Yasuke's hateful wife, which are shot behind sterile, impersonal panes of glass.

I could go on and on about the complex story and hilarious setups, but I encourage you to read all the other reviews and of course watch the film for yourself. With so much either ugly or boring sex in TV and cinema it's nice to see a film that depicts the act in a fun and life affirming manner.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Happy Comedy: Delightful And Funny!.......2006-12-14

My wife gave this film to me as a present a few years ago. I am a bit biased about this film. I give it five stars because I really think this is a very good film, and more importantly, it's so darn different from so many other films I have seen. I really like the acting of Koji Yakusho, and I wish more of his films were accessible here in the west. In fact, I would like to see him in more films. I think he is an incredible and underated actor in Japan. The film is a very strange one. The film starts with Yosuke Sasano (Koji Yakusho) being let go of the firm he works, and wondering where he will find a job at his age.

One of his friends is named Taro, who is a homeless old man, and he likes to revel in tales of his past youth. In one of these stories, and before his death, he tells Yosuke about a treasure of gold that he hid in a house near the sea in Noto. The treasure is near a red bridge. Out of work, with no idea as to when he will work again, Yosuke decides to leave Tokyo in search of this hidden gold. However, he comes across someone who has a very strange problem. The house where the gold is supposedly hidden also is the very house where this strange beautiful woman lives. Her name is Saeko (Misa Shimizu).

I don't want to give away her problem, as this will ruin part of the story for you, and the film. However, I will say that her problem is of a sexual nature. But the way it is treated is very hilarious and I might add, done in a happy sort of way. The Saeko's grandmother also lives in the house with her, and she is waiting for the man who left her, and promised to come back. However, that man was Taro, the homeless man who has since died. This is a delightful comedy that I really enjoyed, and I recommend that you at least rent it, because it is a charming film. High recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Happy Movie.......2006-11-21

I've only seen this movie and The Eel by this director but I love the director and his female lead very much because of this movie Warm Water Under a Red Bridge. It was a wonderful life affirming viewing experience that made me laugh out loud a few times. I was looking forward to seeing more movies in this warmer style (I wasn't as fond of The Eel) but sadly, the director passed away - an old man. In any case, this movie makes me happy just thinking about it and knowing someone salty and humorous was out there thinking up these things makes me smile right now. He was so naughty!

4 out of 5 stars delight and a wonderfully light-hearted romp.......2006-06-04

Working in the vein of magical realism, director Shohei Imamura spins a yarn of Yosuke (Koji Yakusho), an unemployed salaryman who lives on the dole in Tokyo. He wires his welfare money to his estranged wife while living in "the lower depths" with colorful characters such as Taro (Kazuo Kitramura), "the Blue Tent Philosopher." Prompted by Taro's death and his past encouragement to seize the moment while he can still get a hard-on, Yosuke travels to a small seaside Noto village in search of Taro's long-left treasure.

Once there, Yosuke falls in with the locals who surpass the expected "quirky locals" stereotypes and, instead, appear closer to interesting individuals. At the center of Yosuke's attention is Saeko (Misa Shimizu), a soggy strumpet who, like her (apparently) senile grandmother, suffers from an ailment where she retains water in a most unusual way.

Imamura focuses on issues of filial piety, virility and love with wry, ribald humor. WARM WATER is a delight and a wonderfully light-hearted romp by a seasoned master.

4 out of 5 stars strange elements effortlessly weaved together.......2006-02-24

Imamura does here what Neil Jordan does in Crying Game; he takes two seemingly incongruous elements, fetishistic sexual obsession and contemporary sociopolitical malaise, and weaves them effortlessly together. Imamura's rigorously geometric framing contrasts with the feathery-light content of the tale. Having said that, there are some gritty moments here; a drowning born of insanity is rendered in stark black-and-white, and the social plight of Japan's cast-aside middle-aged salarymen is emblematically captured in Yakusho's performance. However, at heart this is a fun movie that surprises and delights. It is all about the mise-en-scene, perfectly delivered each time by Imamura and the principles. The film does flag at the end; it felt like they opted to go for melodrama purely because the allotted time was running out. The previous two acts make up for that third-act missed beat. One gripe is that the edition I bought had no Extras apart from the theatrical trailer. I would have liked a Making Of to confirm my suspicion that this film was as much fun to make as it is to watch. It must have been murder for cast and crew to keep a straight face during those venting scenes...

3 out of 5 stars IT WAS OK FOR THIS TYPE OF FILM.......2007-02-10

RED WATER

This film is honestly not as bad as every one makes it out to be, I mean just take it for what it is. And what is it exactly you might ask, well it is a rip off b movie, and for that it really isn't that bad. Sure it isn't a classic in any sense but it is still entertaining enough for a boring night with nothing to do. Director Charles Robert Carner does what he can with this film, it turned out ok for a cheap rip off film. Writers J.D. Feigelson and Chris Mack are mainly the ones to blame here, even I can't deny that the script could have been better. Also the acting was ok at best from most, Lou Diamond Phillips was ok as the lead in this film but I have seen him do much better [The Triangle]. Kristy Swanson did well in her part as Phillips ex wife. Coolio like Lou was only ok in his part of some side kick goon. But I must say that the actor who played Bret was well beyond every one else in this film. But other then him nobody else seemed to do any thing other then ok.
The story was an easy one to follow, a shark is loose in the fresh water of the Mississippi. It just so happens that in that same water is some people drilling for natural gas, and some guys looking for some money that was lost in the river 5 years ago. As it turns out both groups cross paths and find them selves battling each other as well as the shark. Actually when I spell all of this it seems like the story should have been much better, but I'll stick by what I wrote earlier and say that this film is ok for a rip off movie.

2 out of 5 stars Hahaha!!!.......2005-03-29

Well, what can I say? I'm usually not very picky about "seamonster"-movies (especially when there's a shark involved). And though it didn't surprise me, "Red Water" (hm..!), whatever you do don't believe the cover of the dvd. That shark (!) looks frightening, and looks to be a Great White. The shark in this movie however is a Bull Shark, and very "plastic" in a non-Hollywood-sence.

There is plenty of shark in "Red Water", some reviewers here mean that you hardly see the shark, but that's not the problem. The problem is that you see the shark TOO many times, and as mentioned; it's not much to look at! The effects (?) are something between Jaws 3 & 4, and that explains a lot if you are familiar with those. The acting is what you'd expect from a b-movie, ok at its' best, the script is paperthin -but it could've been more "watchable" if "more story, less shark".

I doubt that I will watch "Red Water" again. B-movies like "Anacondas" and "Lake Placid", well, at least the effects are somewhat believable.

I didn't expect much, but got less...

1 out of 5 stars Oh the humanity!.......2005-01-16

"Red Water," a made for television film starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Kristy Swanson, carries on the now long and wearisome tradition of ripping off "Jaws." You would think that nearly thirty years after Steven Spielberg's project arrived in theaters filmmakers and producers might move on to another genre. You would be wrong. Every year brings us even more "animal gone wild" flicks, everything from sharks, octopi, whales, snakes, bears, rats, ants, birds, cats, dogs, dinosaurs, crocodiles, alligators, and genetic laboratory experiments gone horribly awry ripping their way through a fresh crop of hapless humans. If the creature in question has sharp teeth, claws, wings, talons, tentacles, and pincers expect to see the monster in question appear in a low budget, straight to video knockoff of "Jaws." Sure, there are elaborations to the standard plot lines, none of which significantly improves these rip-offs, but all of them owe a big debt to Steven Spielberg's film. For example, "Red Water" tries something a little different by having a freshwater shark terrorize people on a Louisiana River. It also inserts a plot thread about a gang of criminals recovering a stash of money from the riverbed. None of these ideas disguises what is really going on.

"Red Water" is the story of John Sanders (Lou Diamond Phillips), a down on his luck fisherman with an ex-wife, horrific memories of a disaster from his days as an oil drilling technician, and loans on his boat he can't afford to repay. At the same time Sanders dithers with the bank about his delinquent loan payments, a shark somehow manages to enter the river and promptly wreaks havoc on swimmers, fishermen, and anyone else who manages to get in the way. Sanders could care less about the shark, primarily because he doesn't know about it at first and also because his ex-wife Kelli (Kristy Swanson) just walked back into his life. She's a scientist working for some big oil company that is drilling for natural gas on the river, and she knows that John is an expert on this sort of thing. Whether you buy the idea that a scientist would go by the name "Kelli" is another matter. Sanders eventually agrees to help out when he learns that the oil executives will pay him handsomely for his troubles. After all, he'll do just about anything to bring in enough cash to keep his boat. What none of these people know is that they will run headlong into several sharks, one that swims and several that walk around on two legs.

The movie switches focus long enough to tell us about some Jamaican criminal who lost a ton of money in the river when one of his underlings dropped the box containing the cash in the water while eluding the authorities. This guy hires some mercenary thug, along with a goon named Ice (Coolio), to go track down the subordinate in an effort to persuade him to reveal the location of the cash. And wouldn't you know it? The site just happens to lie right near the oilrig where Sanders and Kelli eventually show up! What follows is incredibly predictable: the criminals take over Sanders's vessel because they think these guys angling for the money, a disaster occurs on the rig that claims the lives of several workers, and the shark turns up to chow down on a few of the principals. How predictable is "Red Water"? Not only is there a Cajun chap helping out on Sanders's boat, we get a few scenes of a Cajun party complete with music and dancing. Just in case you aren't aware that you should laugh at these hicks, the script throws in a few lines comparing the party to "Deliverance." How clever and original is that? I'm starting to get real tired of seeing this sort of prejudice in films and television shows. If you put any minority group in the place of these Cajuns and did the same thing, the outcry would be deafening.

It's not the overt prejudice of the Cajun scenes that sinks "Red Water"; it's everything else. The venerable Lou Diamond Phillips hasn't made a good film since...well...I can't recall, actually. I quit following his career after "The First Power." As for Kristy Swanson, I was surprised to see her here. I remember her star rising in the early to mid 1990s, but at some point she fell off the radar and, if "Red Water" is any indication, into B-movie purgatory. It's sad, really, because she's not that bad of an actress. Coolio, on the other hand, goes over the top in his role as a thug looking for some money. If I had known from the start that this guy was in the film, I wouldn't have watched it. Aside from the performances, or the lack thereof, the production values are low, the pace drags, and the film has the propensity to put the strangest dialogue in its characters' mouths. I really, really wish I had written down some of the odd lines uttered by Phillips's character. I remember watching the movie and thinking at the time, "I should write that down and use it later in a review." For some reason, I didn't. Probably because I just wanted this thing to end quickly.

In another bizarre turn, the movie carries a 'R' rating even though there isn't much bloody carnage going on. The only extras on the disc, fortunately, are trailers for "Bats," "The Big Hit," and "Ride or Die." If you're really interested in watching creatures attack flicks, there are plenty of other bad movies to choose from, most of them unintentionally hilarious schlockfests that manage to entertain on some level. "Red Water" is too bland, too confused plot wise, and too full of actors on the downhill slide of their careers to be entertaining. If you decide to head up this river, good luck to you.

I watched this movie, seeing that it was a "shark" movie. But where's the shark?? The plot is these people are hostages. The shark is just there so us shark fanatics have a reason to see this awful movie. But I was watching going, "okay, they're in the water, where is the shark???" Even JAWS 3, (which sucked) has more sharks. If you like hoatage movies, see this. (on second thought, don't...) But if you like sharks, see something else.

3 out of 5 stars Some Swayze, some explosions, but not quite enough........2007-06-05

Trapper County War was viewed with high expectaions. We considered the idea of Don Swayze being a renagade Confederate trying to pull off a Southern accent and making his world-renowned facial ticks absolutely appealing. Who wouldn't? However, the filmakers seemed to try to make a sentimental love story out of this movie rather than making it good old fashioned B! I would still recomend popping it in, but maybe not first in your summer B line up.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2006-09-04

Throughout history, Hollywood has loved to trash folks who live in the Appalachians and the Ozarks as being "white trash" and "hillbillies." There have been numerous movies such as the Ma & Pa Kettle flicks that were devoted to portraying folks who live in rugged rural areas as being hopelessly backwards and pretty much illiterate. Even now, hill folk are one of the few groups of people that normally politically correct Hollywood feels few compunctions about denigrating. One example of the way that Hollywood treats folks in the rural mountain regions is 1989's Trapper County War .

Trapper County War begins when city guy Ryan Cassidy (Rob Estes) takes a wrong turn while on vacation and winds up in a backwoods North Carolina county run, owned and operated by the evil Luddigger family that is hell bent on lording over everyone else. Naturally, the city slicker does not have the sense to get the hell out of Dodge, err Trapper County, and gets himself deeper and deeper in trouble. He makes common cause with one of those Vietnam veteran psychos who populate Hollywood productions (Vietnam veterans are another group that Hollywood loves to trash) against the Luddigger tyranny. He also meets and immediately champions the cause of the abused stepdaughter of the Luddigger family, Lacey (Betsy Russell). What follows is just another cookie cutter formula action thriller that seems to have been originally intended as being a ripoff of the 1st Rambo movie, "First Blood."

Trapper County War is basically just another rendition of the Hollywood theme of enlightened city slicker vs. the crazed backwoods creeps. The whole idea that taking a wrong turn on vacation gets someone in this kind of trouble is just ridiculous. The acting talent, such as it was, must have found it especially difficult to keep straight faces while spouting what passes for dialogue in this movie. As for Betsy Russell, she is quite beautiful in this movie, but evinces all the acting talent of a tree stump. Then again, she may have been doing this turkey of a movie strictly for the money.

In any event, Trapper County War is only worth your time if you enjoy ridiculing bad movies.

4 out of 5 stars Two Lovers. One chance. No Mercy.......2002-12-02

The hills echo with explosive action when a city boy gets caught in the deadly crossfire of Trapped Country War. Driving cross-country, Ryan (Robert Estes, The Uninvited) makes a wrong turn and winds up in a backwoods hell ruled by the savage Luddiggers. Sparks fly when Ryan tries to rescue the clan's sexy ward, Lacey (Besty Russell, Avengine Angel), only to find himself a victim of their sadistic brand of justice. Aided by an embittered Vietnam Vet (Ernie Hudson, Gostbusters), Ryan must fight back with every lethal weapon in his arsenal - if he is to survive.

Usually I wouldn't waste my time to write something on here that I don't think anyone will ever read, but in case you decided to here is what I think of this movie...Oh My God! I woke up at 2:00a.m. on Feb. 04, and I could not go back to sleep I was so into this movie, it kept me on the edge of my seat all night! I finally got to sleep at 4:00a.m. and I had a dream about it...LOL. Then the next day I was so upset because I was telling my friend about it at work and she asked me what the name of it was and I said "Trapper County...(someting) aaahhh! I couldn't remember the name! So I went home and I treid to look it up on the TV listings but it was the next day and I couldn't find it anywhere I was ready to give up...then 2 days later I found it..."Trapper County War"! I was so happy...that's how good this movie is! BUY IT NOW...don't waste anytime:o)

5 out of 5 stars Great Western.......2007-02-21

I first saw this when it came out at the movies in the early 70's. In the beginning, the actors seemed like they were waiting to, well, act. It finally picked up after the robbery of the the train and the betrayal of Link by Gauche. Bronson and Mifume's characters are working on opposite ends at first. Mifume has seven days to get a highly important sword back and he uses Bronson to help him because Bronson knows the gang that took it. Bronson goes along, but only to get revenge. Along the way they meet with Indians and outlaws, which make for some excellent action. I don't know of another movie that brought the old west and the old east together like this. There is no comparison, not even today! The two learn to respect each other and work together. Bronson is so cool in this movie! Mifume is excellent as a samurai determined to complete his orders. I just fell in love with Toshiro Mifume when I first saw this movie! I would love to have this DVD in my collection!

Great movie filmed with an international style. Mr. Bronson is very funny in this flick and has some great lines.

Also worth noting that this new DVD release(white background), although still in full frame, has a much better picture quality than the shoddy Brazilian DVD release that has been on the market for years.

Definately worth the upgrade.

4 out of 5 stars Good yet unconventional western.......2005-03-30

East meets west as legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune teams up with Charles Bronson in Terence Young's "Red Sun".

Bronson is the leader of a band of desperadoes who have endeavored to rob a train, with Alain Delon playing Bronson's lieutenant "Gauche". Coincidentally traveling on the same train which is traversing the remote 1870's western frontier is the Japanese ambassador to the U.S. He is guarded by two loyal samurai, one of which is Mifune playing Kuroda Jubie. In the ambassador's possession is a ceremonial samurai sword destined to be a gift to the president. Delon decides to steal the sword killing the other samurai in the process. He double crosses Bronson by dynamiting the train attempting to kill him and stealing all the money.

Mifune is commissioned by the ambassador to retrieve the sword within one weeks time. He and Bronson collaborate to form a shaky partnership as they both are after Delon. During their odyssey their initial mistrust for each other gradually gets replaced by a mutual respect. Along the way they pick up Delon's prostitute girlfriend Cristina played by Ursula Andress.

While "Red Sun" was a novel idea for a western it fell short in a few areas. Bronson's character Link Stuart was overly comedic for my liking. Ursula Andress, while a fine looking woman is no great actress. The star of the movie was unquestionably Mifune. The stoic samurai he has played in so many classics by Kurosawa was once again magnificently created by him.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2004-06-02

I thorougly enjoyed this movie. The combination of Toshiro Mifune and Charles Bronson was exactly what the doctor ordered.Enough humor and action to keep you watching.

4 out of 5 stars Sol Rojo.......2002-08-29

This is an interesting and amusing internationally co-produced Western directed loosely by Terence Young. Charles Bronson (outlaw) teams with Toshiro Mifune (samurai warrior) in search of spoils, honor and Alain Delon (gambling con man). Ursula Andress and Capucine provide the major love interests. The highlight is Maurice Jarre's lively score integrating Eastern and Western musical idioms. This is a very entertaining film and which gets its inspiration from the Italian Westerns that were beginning to disappear into the sunset at the time of this film's release.

There is no comparison, not even today! The two learn to respect each other and work together. Bronson is so cool in this movie! Mifume is excellent as a samurai determined to complete his orders. I just fell in love with Toshiro Mifume when I first saw this movie! I would love to have this DVD in my collection!

4 out of 5 stars Shanghai Noon was a remake of this International Classic.......2007-01-05

SUMMARY: Yosuke has been laid off. His wife has given up on him and he's living on the streets of Tokyo, constantly looking for work. He stumbles upon an interesting story told by Taro, a homeless wanderer. Taro tells Yosuke that he stole a valuable gold Buddhist statue from a temple in Kyoto, and hid it in a house by a red bridge in a town on the Noto Peninsula near the Sea of Japan. When Taro's suddenly dies, Yosuke recalls the story of the Buddhist statue and sets off to find it. Upon reaching the town he goes to a supermarket where he spies a woman shoplifting. After the woman leaves the scene, Yosuke notices an earring in a pool of water where she was standing. The woman turns out to be Saeko, granddaughter of Mitsu, who both live in the house by the red bridge. Yosuke tracks down Saeko and returns the earring to her. This is the moment he first encounters the mystery of Saeko's water. This strange, kleptomaniac woman has the power to make flowers bloom out of season, and to draw fish from the sea into the river with the water she secretes when she experiences physical pleasure. Yosuke gets a job with some fishermen and decides to stay in town. He gradually becomes obsessed with Saeko and her mysterious water, and as time goes on, Saeko's long suffering due to her water condition begins to heal with Yosuke's attention to it. Meanwhile, another acquaintance from the streets of Tokyo, Gen, has also heard Taro's story. He arrives in town and asks Mitsu what she knows about the long-missing golden treasure. She reveals a story that puts both herself and Yosuke in danger, as Gen and his gang also seek the statue.
