Equal parts weepy drama and soap opera, After the Wedding is a beautifully filmed story centering on Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen, Casino Royale), a Danish man working at a orphanage in Bombay. Just when funds have run desperately low, Jorgen (Rolf Lassgård)--a wealthy benefactor--promises to donate millions of dollars to the orphanage. But there's a catch. Jacob must collect the funds himself in Copenhagen... and attend the wedding of the eccentric millionaire's daughter. But once Jacob meets the benefactor's wife Helene (played by a radiant Sidse Babett Knudsen), it's obvious to the viewer that the two have a complicated history. It's also likely that her daughter Anna (Stine Fischer Christensen) most probably is theirs. So why did Jorgen invite Jacob to Anna's wedding? Does he know Jacob is Anna's father? Is something nefarious in the works? The thought-provoking film was Denmark's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 Academy Awards. Subtitled in English, the Danish picture is well helmed by director Susanne Bier (Brothers), who manages to keep the film from delving into over the top histrionics. Mikkelsen is particularly good, whether he's channeling his anger at having been shut out of his maybe-daughter's life for the past 20 years, or having to grovel a bit to get Jorgen to donate the funds as promised to his orphanage. The relationships here are messy and often uncomfortable. But they also ring true to life. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film.......2007-06-27

Mads Mikklesen delivers a wonderful performance in After the Wedding . After the Wedding has a simple concept but it's anything but simple minded. Sussane Bier gets great performances from all her actors and the result is one of the best movies of 06'.

5 out of 5 stars Mikkelsen and Lassgård put this film on this year's Oscar nominee list.......2007-06-25

A previous reviewer calls 'After the Wedding' a tale of 'stupendous coincidence.' I love that phrase. Indeed, that's what the key event in this movie feels like. The thing is, though, it's simply not the case. Over time, we learn and see that Rolf Lassgård's Jørgen is anything but a man to leave things to coincidence. The viewer is let in to slowly see his charm, his shrewdness, his business acumen...and the little scheme he's put into play between his family and Jacob, as portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen ('Le Chiffre' to 'Casino Royale' fans).

As for Mikkelsen, what can I say? He's Denmark's George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, all rolled into one. The guy can act, too. You'll see the phrase 'soap opera' used on these pages. In the hands of lesser actors, yes. But not with Mikkelsen and Lassgård - their performances are what landed this film on this year's Oscar nominee list. [As good as it is, no way it was going to win out over 'The Lives of Others' - to me, that's the best single film of the decade so far.]

5 out of 5 stars Great Film.......2007-06-22

Phenomenal film that well-deserves all of the positive press I had heard about it. A story of stupendous coincidence as a Danish man running an orphanage in India returns to Copenhagen for the business end of a large donation. This movie so simply could have been a narrow and uncomplicated story but each moment peels another and yet another unexpected layer. The acting was absolutely marvelous as relatively pigeon-holed characters begin to blossom into more dynamic people. Sensational movie but the white subtitles are a real strain.

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-28

This subtitled movie (thought the scenes in India are in English), is a very enjoyable look at the radically different lives that one man leads in India, and the Denmark he left behind. Mads Mikkelsen plays Jacob (with a 'c', it is noted) who helps run an orphanage in a desperately poor India. An offer comes in from a rich Dane, Jørgen, who is thinking of supporting the charity. Jacob promises to return in time to one of his charge's, Pramod, birthday. He reluctantly leaves his life in India helping the children, puts on a suit, boards a well-appointed plane and gets a chauffeured ride to a luxury hotel. It's as much of a culture shock as one can imagine.

The rich Jørgen's life is one filled with board meetings, a mansion, wealthy friends and relatives, every one of whom could make a difference in the poverty of India. However, there is a wedding to plan, with Jørgen's daughter getting married to a young man of the firm.

Several plot twists ensue that make Jacob question the purpose of his life, and which world he wants and needs to live in. It turns out his love and compassion is needed in both.

Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars "Can't Buy Me Love".......2007-05-15

`After the Wedding,' Denmark's "Best Foreign Picture" nominee for the Academy Awards has a lot going for it. Even if there is a soap opera feel to the scenes and the story, the quality is head and shoulders above any serial. Not to mention the fact we get six months of development in one movie. Solid performances, and camera shots that capture every revealing reaction give the story a magnetic interest.

The film begins in India where Jacob Pedersen (Mads Mikkelson) works with the impoverished. He feels at home with the children, but he goes back to Denmark to raise funds for the orphanage and get reacquainted with his family. At home his former love Helene (Sidse Babett Knudsen) has married a tycoon, Jorgen Hanson (Rolf Lassgard), someone Jacob is able to solicit funding with ease. Once they meet, he is invited to their daughter's wedding. Much like `Rumor Has It' with far less laughs, yet more substantive development, Jacob finds out at the reception that he has more at stake at home than he previously thought. From there he is reattached to deceptive Helene, and both must sort out the bitter resentment they feel for one another. (Did he have one affair as he says or was he the philanderer by her account?) Toasting her mother and step-father at the wedding, the bride Anna (Sidse Babett Knudsen) later comes to grip with life-changing information in her own life.

Skillfully sorting out the relationships and priorities of the key players, `After the Wedding,' presents a bitter-sweet story with memorable characters and interesting circumstances. One of the merits of the film is how it defines poverty in India and compares it with a different kind of impoverishment for the wealthy. Jorgan's problems wouldn`t make us trade places with him for the world. Similarly, one of the boys at the orphanage reminds Jacob that he doesn't even like the wealthy. Another ironically says, "If I were rich, I'd be happy." Watching everyone come to grips with their lives and barter for stability make `After the Wedding` a revealing family portrait.

In this clever speculative tale, story collaborators Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes and screenwriter-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II and VI) send two famous historical figures ahead in time. In late 19th century England, writer H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) unwittingly includes Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in his social circle. When one of Wells's dinner parties is crashed by the police looking for the Ripper, Jack uses the author's time machine to escape. But there's one catch--after it has been used, the machine returns to Wells's time. Thus the literary genius bravely sets out to find his evil friend before he can wreak havoc on another time period, and soon arrives in modern-day San Francisco. What follows is a fascinating merger of a suspense thriller--as the charming and polite Wells tries to hunt down the shrewd, brutish Ripper and take him back to the past--and a love story, as Wells befriends and falls in love with a bank administrator (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide through the future. Through its brilliant combination of creepy suspense and tender romance, Time After Time manages to become a classic in two genres at once--a rare cinematic achievement. --Bryan Reesman

Description

London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write "The Time Machine." But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

4 out of 5 stars Oedipus Wrecks, or the Perks of Asking Romy to Dance.......2007-04-19

Of all the bad ideas from the seventies getting cheeky revivals, why doesn't someone bother to givve a neat story like this one a decent remake? Malcolm McDowell plays Jack the Ripper, who steals H.G. Wells' time machine in order to escape the police. The machine returns sans Jack, and Wells travels into the future to capture him. He also manages to meet a nice girl who may want to settle down with him. Instead he opts to count his Ripper reward money in the Time Machine, leaving it running with the garage door closed while listening to Morrissey's cover of "A Hard Day's Night." Thumbs up, to infinity!

This film was directed by Brian DePalma.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2007-01-28

Wow! What a great film! I remembered seeing it when I was very young. The movie was way ahead of it's time (no pun intended). The story was very original and the soundtrack, composed by the legendary Miklos Rosza, gives the film a classic feel. Although it may seem cheap by today's special effects standards, this film really delivers! Very enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Traveling in Time.......2007-01-12

What a GREAT movie! A new twist on the old classic! I'll be watching this one again & again!!

5 out of 5 stars Time After Time.......2007-01-04

This hard to find DVD is a great thriller. It combines time travel with Jack the Ripper and has clever dialogue and plenty of action The cast is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars An Outrageously Implausible Tale Done To Perfection Marks "Time After Time" A Personal Favorite.......2006-12-07

It has been a while since I've reviewed something on my lifelong favorite's list. So I've chosen "Time After Time" because it isn't very well known by younger audiences nor is it necessarily considered a "classic."
However, I instantly fell in love with this movie over 25 years ago--and I still consider it a rip-roaring good time!

Starting out with the most bizarre plot ever, "Time After Time" will keep you enthralled. It is a glorious popcorn flick--fast, light, fun, and exciting in equal measures. Set in 1893, we meet H. G. Wells (Malcolm MacDowell) who is unknowingly friends with Jack The Ripper (David Warner). MacDowell has constructed a time machine which Warner misappropriates as he is fleeing the authorities. He travels to modern day San Francisco where he continues his murderous ways. MacDowell follows him, he must stop Jack The Ripper! He meets up with a local woman, Mary Steenburgen, who helps him adjusts and ultimately gets caught up in his unlikely story.

"Time After Time" succeeds in several different genres concurrently. This is a credible sci-fi pic, a sweet romance, a fish out of water comedy, as well as a decent serial killer thriller. I think that's what I love and respect about this film, it's out there. There is no way that this picture should work, it should be terrible. And yet, inexplicably, Nicholas Meyer has crafted an intricate and audacious work. Even if I didn't love this movie, I would respect its ambition and scope. But love it I do, this is one of the most wildly entertaining pictures you could hope to see. Some people might be tempted to dismiss this work as dated or even slight--and yes, you do have to accept that this is a product of the 70's. There are references to "free love" and other concepts of the era, but at the same time--the film is incredibly prescient about violence in the modern age. Every time Warner describes how he was meant to exist in this future, where killings and debauchery are commonplace, I understand a real truth in his sentiment.

The performances are cracking good. MacDowell is the unlikeliest hero and a refreshing romantic lead. Warner has NEVER NEVER been better. If you are even a passing fan of his, you must see this picture. And Mary Steenburgen is a delight--she doesn't do enough these days! Maybe this isn't highbrow entertainment, but it is dazzling fun. Recommended to all without even the slightest hesitation. KGHarris, 12/06.

Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short Cinema Journal, Volume 2), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. The Collector's Edition DVD includes a fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary (The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys) in addition to the theatrical trailer, production notes, and a 12 Monkeys archive of still photos, design concepts, and storyboards. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-04

I really liked the movie. One of the best sci-fi movies I have seen. But I have a question. When Madeleine Stowe calls up the number that Bruce Willis is supposed to call, and she reaches a carpet cleaning company she is overjoyed thinking that the virus plague is a hoax after all. She nevertheless leaves a message in the voice mail of that number and recounts it to Bruce Willis who of course has heard it before and repeats the message verbatim even before Stowe could finish telling him. The whole point of the film is that Bruce Willis is reliving the past exactly as it had happened, with him as one of the main protagonist. So what actually happened in 1996? Did Stowe call up the carpet cleaning company? Did she leave a message? If she did and repeated that to Willis did Willis know beforehand what her message was? If he knew, then how did he know? He was NOT time travelling THEN. He was just a little boy of 8 years. And if it was not Willis (Cole) in 1996 who Stowe (Railly) met, then who was it? Because Cole was 8 years old in 1996. Can anybody throw any light?

5 out of 5 stars The Army of The 12 Monkey's Is Coming...Be Prepared.......2007-04-27

Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) takes a typical "time travel" theory and twists it into one heck of a psychological thriller. The premise of the movie is rather interesting (if you're into sci-fi). Cole (Bruce Willis) is in the future (30 or so years?) in a world where only 1% of the population lives - all underground. He's imprisoned for random acts of violence we're slightly hinted towards in a dark, gloomy, odd underground Philadelphia prison. He is hand picked by the top scientists of the underground world to travel back in time to 1996 to gather information on the super-virus that was released in December 1996 by the army of the 12 Monkeys. Unfortunately he is sent back to 1990 Baltimore and finds himself put into a mental institution because, lets be honest, anybody that randomly shows up and is going on about collecting information about the virus that wipes out 5 billion people is obviously going to be thought to be a little nuts. At the institution he runs into Jeffrey (Brad Pitt) who is very insane (Oscar-nominated role in this movie) and "befriends" Cole as eventually helps him escape. In the process, Cole's psychiatrist Kathryn (Madeleine Stowe) feels an odd connection with him on a more spiritual level. She is convinced she knows him from somewhere. To speed it up, he goes back to the future and then goes BACK to 1996...there the story goes on...

All throughout, the movie takes Cole and twists his (and your) mind and starts to make him (and you) doubt if his "time-travel" experiences have actually happened...or was he just really insane. The movie is pretty straight forward in making it clear that he did go back in time, but you really go "or did he?" the whole time. It is really cool how everyone plays together and ties together. It twists your mind a lot, and you'll be biting your nails the whole time trying to figure out what will happen. The whole "dream" sequence that is seen throughout finally comes together at the end and its a CLASSIC "Wow...." scene. I have to say it was the coolest twist on modern sci-fi mind thrillers to date.

If you've seen the movie The Prestige, you'll see some similarities...some.

I'm Will Black, and thats my review of 12 Monkeys.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, lackluster HD DVD........2007-04-19

I've always loved the movie, and while it looks great in HD, it's very reminiscent of the first few DVDs that came out. It has quite a few defects just during normal playback, and the additional content is exactly the same as it is on the DVD... which looked bad on the original, and looks TERRIBLE now.

Unfortunately, there aren't many HD DVDs to choose from yet, but having your expectations set at a reasonable level can't hurt. :/ I suspect this one will be like the first Tron DVD release, and coming out a ways down the road (assuming the format survives) to compare against newer releases.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic satisfaction.......2007-03-30

The variety within this action-packed, futuristic thriller is loaded with ever changing elements that will keep you glued to the screen. After your stomach's in knots, the separate goals eventually unite in a race against time that will pull you into the action. Packed with surprises and intellectual stimulation, this film is not predictable. The elements will leave you satisfied and the shockingly realistic possibilities revealed will leave you thinking. Superb acting, writing, directing and production only add to the exciting cinematic ride. Well worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars A great, fun, intelligent film I highly reccomend........2007-03-21

I very bleak but fun look at a dystopian future. A killer virus. Surreal story line and great actors like Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. What's not to like?

Description

"Sexy and chic." —Entertainment Weekly

Perhaps the most startlingly authentic portrayal of a love affair ever filmed, After Sex is a funny, taboo-breaking film about passion and obsession, which swoops from the euphoric heights of a sexually charged romance to its tempestuous aftermath.

Brigitte Roüan stars as Diane, a forty-year old book editor with a successful career, a loving husband and two adorable children. During a visit with one of her writers, she meets Emilio (Boris Terral), an exotically seductive engineer in his twenties who ignites Diane's life with passion and turns her world upside down.

1 out of 5 stars RUN NOW!.......2002-09-30

Save your money and invest in a Pet Rock. You'd get amusement from it than you will from this dreadful film. I picked it up at a Blockbuster previously viewed movie sale. Thank god it was only 1.99. And now I know why. IT'S AWFUL. I honestly tried to watch this movie, but I had to fast forward through most of it because of the insipid dialogue and trite premise. It tries to come off as a serio-comic romance, but it's boring, predictable and trite. If you come across it, lie very still and it may just sniff you and leave you alone. If it doesn't, may God take mercy on your mortal soul.

5 out of 5 stars Serious Spackled With Comedy.......2002-07-23

I actually really enjoyed this movie--a lot. I throw this movie into the category of the successor to those relationship movies such as About Last Night and St. Elmo's Fire, but with a somewhat lighter tone. I thought the ending was well done. The characters and their situations felt real. I don't want to give parts of this movie away, but there are a few interactions with the guys that I found hilarious.

I wish the DVD had more features--actually, any features. Apparently, they did not want to spend a lot of time to put any of those special DVD perks before they shipped it out.

3 out of 5 stars You knew it before you see it........2002-05-16

I know everyone who watched this movie wouldn't like to comment on it because of the title of this movie. But I'd like to take the plunge and be the first person to review it.

I accidentaly knew this movie from an ad on a portal site of South Korea, which was Brooke Shields with a cigar. She is famous and popular in my country, so I wanted to watch this for a try.

This movie is for mature audiences, but not so-called an adult movie. You can't expect a stuff except a slight upper-body one. That's usually good for most viewers.

For the content? It's just what men and women are all about for the ages in this movie. You knew it before you will see this. If you'd like to know it, you don't have to know it.

If you have time and nothing to do, it would be an option to watch this movie. But it would be better for you to watch other better movies, if you'd choose to watch a DVD/VHS.

Just watching your familiar actresses will be fine and that's all. I don't know how familiar they are because I can't watch U.S. TV series except very famous ones in my country.

It's up to you how you spend your leisure time.

3 out of 5 stars NOT A BAD SCI-FI..........2006-01-18

Terrible plots, bad acting, hilarious dialog and effects that aren't so special not withstanding, I'm a fan of bad science fiction movies. For the most part, I'm not the type to make fun of them. There's just something about them that pulls me which I really can't put into words. So I bought this movie (more accurately, I bought a three dvd/9 movie package dirt cheap specifically for this movie) because it sounded intriguing. I found it to be rather captivating. A billionaire, his wife and lawyer go scuba diving while on vacation only to emerge and find it impossible to breath. Luckily, they have several hours worth of oxygen in their tanks. The boat's engine doesn't fire, matches don't light and they can't breath. It's become apparent that somehow, the oxygen supply was completely drained while the three were submerged. From that point, the movie turns from its sci-fi premise to a case study of human behavior during an apocalyptic event. The actors involved performed their roles professionally. I detected no campiness and because of this, they made the love triangle and dire uncertainty aspects of the plot believable. Interestingly enough, I don't consider this to be in the bad sci-fi category for a number of reasons. The acting was good and because the movie was more of a psycological study of human nature in extreme situations, there weren't any special effects but the cinematography was done very well. There were a number of shots that I made me think "that's pretty creative". Even the fight scenes weren't too laughable. This movie is almost entirely dialog and I thought it was very well done. The ending was a little, shall we say, limp wristed but this doesn't ruin the movie. All in all, I was surprised to find this movie to be this well done.

2 out of 5 stars Only Roger Corman could make the apocalypse this unbelievably boring.......2005-12-01

Roger Corman was the Ernie Banks of filmmaking (the difference being that Ernie Banks was actually good at what he did). Let's make two, Corman said on more than one occasion - we've got this set, we've got some actors, and we've got a few days, so let's make a second movie on-the-fly. And so it was that The Last Woman on Earth was made alongside Creature From the Haunted Sea on location in Puerto Rico. It looks and sounds like the story and dialogue were all made up on the spot - and that's pretty close to the truth. That's the only excuse Robert Towne has for giving us such a miserably boring script. Talk about the world ending with a whimper!

Towne didn't just write the script, though; he also starred in the film (under the name Edward Wain) as lawyer Martin Joyce. He's joined by Antony Carbone (who seems to be attempting to channel both Dean Martin and Bing Crosby simultaneously - with little success) and Betsy Jones-Moreland (the "last woman," as you might have guessed). Martin's a lawyer for shady businessman Harold Gern, who is "vacationing" (far away from an indictment) in Puerto Rico with his wife Evelyn. The three just so happen to be scuba diving when something big happens up above - all of the oxygen in the air mysteriously disappears, killing everyone who wasn't fortunate enough to be hooked up to an oxygen tank at the time. The oxygen soon returns as mysteriously as it vanished, and our three survivors are able to keep on surviving (unfortunately for us, the viewing audience). They hole themselves up in a beachside villa and basically just bicker amongst themselves for the rest of the movie. Harold is a power freak, and his constant planning drives Ev and Martin up the wall (and closer together, although there is not the first trace of any passion in their "romance"). Martin thinks that the whole apocalypse thing makes the Gerns' marriage null and void, but Harold disagrees. The men argue about more than sharing Harold's wife, though. My favorite is the boat argument - there are hundreds of abandoned boats out at the marina, but these two chowder heads actually duke it out over sole control of Harold's boat. Can't we all just get along, what with it being the end of the world and all? The answer to that would be no.

The only good thing about The Last Woman on Earth is the fact that it's relatively short, clocking in at 64 minutes - that's about all a sane person can take of these three incredibly annoying characters. I've seen some bad Roger Corman films in my time, but this has to be the most boring of the bunch.

2 out of 5 stars Post Apocalyptic Gab-Fest..........2005-06-27

This one starts off fairly well. We are introduced to the three main, and as it turns out ONLY characters at a cockfight (!) in Puerto Rico. Antony Carbone (Bucket Of Blood, Pit And The Pendulum) is a self-made zillionaire, Betsy Jones-Mooreland is his wife, and Robert Towne is their lawyer. The trio heads out for a day of fun and scuba-diving, unaware that while they are busy swimming below, the world has come to an end! Upon surfacing, they realize the air is unbreathable, so they use their oxygen tanks to survive until they reach the safety of the shore. It appears that the jungle fauna has replenished the oxygen supply in short order. Corman shows us some desolate, semi-disturbing shots of the aftermath of whatever holocaust has occurred, including a dead child on the side of the road and a ghostly car hitting a curb. Unfortunately, this all happens within the first twenty minutes. The final hour and ten minutes is like an episode of the world's most tedious soap-opera. The three characters argue, fight, pout, and talk-talk-talk their way to the final credits, mostly whining about their "love triangle" situation or waxing philosophical about the evils of money. There is NO action or intrigue (unless you consider half-hearted fist-fights exciting), just excrutiating oration and endless bloviating! I was tempted to throw a lamp through my own TV screen! Good luck with this one...

2 out of 5 stars Dull.......2004-05-22

Having finished Creature From the Haunted Sea early, Corman decided to put the locations and talent he still had on hand to work on another film. Robert Towne wrote the script in a rush at the same time it was being filmed (and at the same time he was acting in it), so don't expect another "Chinatown". A mobster, his wife, and a lawyer are scubadiving when some disaster (maybe an atomic war) burns out the oxygen in the air. They are saved because they still have about an hours worth of air in their tanks and are near an oxygen producing jungle. At first they work together, but a love triangle forms. Some intelligence shines through, but ultimately the film is little more than talking heads and arguments. Nothing profound.

As for the picture quality, the colour has mostly faded to shades of red.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Beyond Belief.......2003-07-22

Don't even think about buying this movie. Awarded 1 star only because ZERO was not given as an option. I received it as a gift ( a GAG gift, as it turns out...) so I felt obligated to watch at least some of it. Bad acting, terrible script, non-existant special effects and a cheesey music score. The only thing worse than the movie itself is the DVD transfer, which features a bleached out, grainy print and miserable sound to go with it. You can't do any worse than this. Spend your [money] on beer or cigarettes.

The great Walter Matthau (The Fortune Cookie, The Bad News Bears, The Odd Couple) gives one of his last performances in Life After Death. Matthau plays Frank, whose wife dies after more than 40 years of marriage. Frank feels lonely, despite the affection and support of his swinging bachelor son Robert (John Stamos). Suddenly romance blossoms for both men: Frank meets Florence (Carol Burnett) at a Hawaiian-themed seniors party, while Robert meets Susan (Teri Polo) on the job. But while Frank is quick to contemplate settling down, Robert is not only leery of commitment for himself, he's not so sure his father should be jumping into a new relationship either. The script of Life After Death is commonplace, but also sincere--and in the hands of old pros like Matthau and Burnett, it plays splendidly. Stamos and Polo have a nice chemistry that gives their scenes some zip. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Walter Matthau stars in one of his final performances as Frank Walsh, a man who finds himself widowed after four decades of marriage. Unlike his son Robert (John Stamos), Frank enjoys married life and finds himself in love again when he meets Florence (Carol Burnett). Robert is unhappy about the match but ultimately realizes that he cannot stand in the way of his father's happiness.

5 out of 5 stars A Haunting and Memorable Film That Takes Place After WWII .......2004-12-23

"Landscape After Battle" (1970; Krajobraz Po Bitwie) is a haunting and memorable film directed by Andrzej Wajda that takes place just after World War II. The film is based on several short stories written by Tadeusz Borowski, who survived Auschwitz. The film begins with the Americans entering a concentration camp at the end of the war in 1945, freeing the prisoners. However, they are freed from one camp and placed into another -- this time guarded by the Americans deep inside Germany. Fearing the people held inside the Nazi camps would know no sense of law, the authorities caged them in another prison until they could decide what to do with them.

Tadeusz (played by Daniel Olbrychski) is an intellectual man who sorts through rubbish to find books to read and writes poetry. He befriends a Jewish woman named Nina in the new camp who fled Poland after the war. After talking, they decide to leave the camp to go for a walk in the woods. Once outside the camp, the two share their feelings and becomes physically intimate. Nina tells Tadeusz she would rather be anywhere, except for Poland. Tadeusz, after thinking long, decides Poland is his home and should return there. Both decide that they should reenter the camp for a while, but doing so creates a dramatic turn of events neither expected.

"Landscape After Battle" is a different type of war film, as it really starts with the war just ending. The viewers are exposed to some of the gritty details of the aftermath of war, as the name of the film suggests. The story is partially tragic, as are many Polish films, however, there is a powerful and artistic flair to the film. "Landscape After Battle" is a gem in the crown of achievement of Andrzej Wajda -- one that is sure to have several scenes that will leave you with lasting memories.

    2 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2005-04-04

Truth be told, the poster is bunches better than the film. Apparently way back in 1960 Roger Corman wanted to vacation in Puerto Rico, and decided to shoot a film to pay for it. So what he gives us is THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH, one of his most uninteresting efforts. And probably cheapest, since 90% of the film only has three characters in it, one of them the screenwriter Robert Towne (CHINATOWN) who plays a lawyer. Some unexplained somehow, everyone in the world (supposedly, at least) is croaked, leaving two men and one woman. So of course you can figure out there're going to be a lot of problems, none of them worth watching. No wonder I've never heard of this film, and now that you have, you can be glad you don't have to watch to find out it's a waste of celluloid.

Okay, I'll assume that if you're here you already know somewhat of what you're in for. These are two Chiller Theatre reguars (perhaps I'll take this as an apology for what went on with the K. Gordon Murray collection...I want my Brainiac!) with an extremely oddball 1968 latin skinflick thrown in, which is actually a grade lower than "Curious Dr. Humph". Alpha offers 2 of these films but you know you're getting more bang for your buck here, no offense Alpha. With "Monstrosity" 3 girls are used as pawns by a body seeking crone and the doctor who is assisting her. Everything but the kitchen sink is in here, not bad for a flick that takes place in 4 rooms of a mansion. Atmosphere, bad acting and general insanity abound. The Spanish maid gets a cat brain and winds up on the roof just above the dogman - and here I thought we would have a good fight. Well, whatever... Mix the special effects of Hypnotic Eye with the good time cheese of Spider Baby, and this is what bubbles out. Next up we have "Love After Death", what looks to me to be a South American skinflick from 1968. Best special effect is the drag queen. Oh, and check out the miscasting of the dead guy's wife. Her, a virgin? Yeh; she's as pure as the driven snow... after it's been driven over a couple hundred times. Seems that her impotent man turns into a dynamo after he's buried- this guy rises from the grave in more ways than one!! But anyay, it looks like it was filmed in New Jersey for six bucks (check out the castle and you'll see what I mean. Can't find a castle, borrow a museum... (see Unhinged for more on that one. Nice little shock ending there, and actually was a fun little time spender. On to "Incredible Petrified World" another Chiller Theatre classic- just scanned through it as I have VHS from Sinister Cinema and have seen it a billion times. All I have to say is: see it for the lava. Pour whiskey on a cowpat and light, I guess...Gotta love this film. Also included are a slew of trailers and some great new music from Something Weird favorites The Dead Elvi. (If anyone reads this who can do something about it, how about an album or two on this website, it'd be much appreciated).
