Back when he wasn't relegated to the lesser cable channels, soft-porn meister Zalman King uncorked this howler of a drama on moviegoers, who were initially titillated by the ratings battle, but then shrugged and went off in search of the next cheap sensation. Model and subsequent Mickey Rourke squeeze Carré Otis plays a brilliant young attorney--well, we're told she's brilliant, although watching her in action, straining to wrap those puffy lips around her legalese dialogue, definitely conjures up other adjectives. She's dispatched to Rio de Janeiro under the guise of real-estate law and ends up seduced both by the exotic culture and by a brooding, highly misunderstood and frighteningly orange-skinned multimillionaire (Rourke). Kinky (for the time) sex games and deliriously mannered dialogue make this a rather pretentious exercise, unleavened by any truly erotic sensuality. Fun for taunting purposes, though. --David Kronke

Description

Set in the sultry splendor of Rio de Janeiro, Wild Orchid stars Mickey Rourke (9 1/2 Weeks), Jacqueline Bisset ("Joan of Arc") and supermodel CarrÃ(c) Otis in a "torrid" (Variety) adventure of the senses. Filled with "exotic settings" (The Hollywood Reporter), it is a hypnotic odyssey that will leave you breathless and spellbound. Beautiful young attorney Emily Reed (Otis) travels to Rio to work with international negotiator Claudia Lirones (Bisset) on a multimillion-dollar deal. But once exposed to the raw sensuality of her surroundings, Emily is increasingly drawn into a world of erotic fantasy. Eager to guide Emily through this underworld is Claudia's old flame Wheeler (Rourke). Mysterious and seductive, Wheeler unleashes Emily's most primitive desiresÂ...even as she threatens to unlock his world-weary heart.

5 out of 5 stars Hi BOB , JEANIE from the CANERY in NEWPORT BEACH.......2007-05-12

OK....I had a 2 night stand with Bob who at the time lived on Balboa Blvd around 32nd Sreet. It was "Wild Orchid" walk after the "Canery". Without seeing the movie it blew my mind. Bob was the best and I hate myself for not responding to the guy. He called and I hung up on him several times:)

Perfect Match...Just didn't know it at the time.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly sexy!.......2007-01-12

So, it's a little dated but this movie is still HOT! It's twisted tale of lust as a kinky rich guy (Rourke) gets a shy, sexually inhibited young lawyer (Carrie Otis) to drop her inhibitions and do things 'good' girls don't do. Otis's character is HOT and one wonders how Wheeler (Rourke) can resist her charms as he plays an emotionally unavailable guy with some serious intamacy issues. He watches in the background as he persuades her to do nasty things with another guy and lives 'through' her as she enjoys herself. Emily seems frightened of her own desires at first as she sees the sexy people of Rio being free and letting loose and having a good time and she ultimately is unable to resist her urges. Meanwhile, Jaquiline Bisset's character is and older lady obsessed with Wheeler, who is trying to throw the young and gorgeous Carrie Otis at him to see if he can resist. I didn't find this movie insulting to women or perverted, it's just a sexy film about people who enjoy sex and there is nothing wrong with this. Anyone who is seriously offended by this is probably not very comfortable with sexuality on screen in general. It's really a pretty tame movie by today's standards, though I DO beleive the Rourke/Otis love scene was not faked. Overall, I found this a sexy movie I would watch it again. The plot is not great but the visuals are awesome, the bodies are HOT and all natural (before this dreadful 'breast implant' craze took over and made all women in nude scenes look like they have grapefruits in them!) and the chemestry between the characters is awesome! This might be a good date movie but be sure of the other person's taste before watching it, some people might consider it smutty or too nasty!

1 out of 5 stars Wild Orchaid.......2006-11-05

This movie was NOT good at all. Other than it has beautiful people with real nice bodies, everything else is a waste of money and time!

4 out of 5 stars Theatrical Soft Core Porn.......2006-06-20

In the late 80's to early 90's, Mickey Rourke may as well have been a porn star. Hell, every movie Rourke was in he was playing the same character who got a different hot chick...They were big-screen soft core porn films. Problem is, Mickey Rourke is so good at playing these characters that the movies he's done aren't that bad. Here, Rourke plays Wheeler...Who won't really enter into the synopsis for a moment. Rourke's ex-wife Carre Otis plays Emily, a young International lawyer who recieves a job with a big firm in New York and is hastily sent to Rio De Janeiro. In Rio, with her boss Claudia (Jaqueline Bisset) away; Emily begins to come into contact with sex almost everywhere she goes. Then, she meets Wheeler. Wheeler is that odd, soft-spoken, rich, womanizer guy every guy wishes they could be. Wheeler is the guy who says stuff to women in movies that we would never be able to get away with, but onscreen it just looks so damned easy. Anyway, unlike "9 1/2 Weeks", Wheeler and Emily don't just begin having sex. In fact, the big sex payoff isn't until the final minutes of the movie. And let's face it, if you rent this movie...You're not renting it for the story. Truth is, the story's not even that intriguing or event good for that matter. The whole movie has a plot like a soft-core porn movie. Thing is, Otis and Rourke have enough charisma on screen to pull of a movie like this. So, even if you ignore the sex, the movie isn't that bad. I, personally, think it's better than 9 1/2 Weeks. Fact is, even if you don't give a damn about the story. Carre Otis is f**king hot, so check it out.

Walter Hill's revisionist take on the American cavalry's campaign to capture renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior Geronimo (Wes Studi) is, like Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, a dark tale that both celebrates and critiques myths of the American West. Despite its title, Geronimo is really about the American cavalry officers who undertake the responsibility of recapturing the warrior, in particular the young narrator Lt. Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), a Civil War hero who respects the great Geronimo and brokers a treaty with the Chiricahua, only to see it collapse when the army kills the tribal medicine man. Gene Hackman plays Gen. George Crook, the proud but sympathetic officer charged with bringing in the renegades who take to hills after the killing. Robert Duvall, the tough, racist army scout and Indian fighter Charlie Sieber, practically steals the picture with his cagey, underplayed performance. More complex and complicated than most Westerns, this is a Walter Hill film through and through: lean, ironic, beautiful to look at (it was shot on location against the astounding landscape of southeastern Utah), and driven by a wonderful Ry Cooder score. Don't confuse this with the 1993 TNT cable film by the same name; it confounded many viewers at the time of its release and may have been at least partially responsible for its box-office disappointment. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the true story.......2007-05-13

A very good historial movie. It has the Indians side of the story, which is refreshing to see. A great action movie that will hold your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Goy-Ak-la An American Hero.......2007-04-27

Those who gave this movie low marks are neither as bright nor knowledgeable as they would have you believe. True - the movie was not historically accurate because it is a MOVIE. The public does not go to the theater to watch documentaries.

Who really knows the whole truth? If you desire more information about Geronimo, (Goy-Ak-la was his real name), I strongly suggest that you read the books; Geronimo, In His Own Words and The Truth About Geronimo, written by Bitton Davis. Davis was an Indian scout leader and knew most of the people highlighted in the MOVIE. He was not fond of Geronimo, but wrote a very interesting account of his attempts to capture the so-called renegade. The victors in any clash of cultures, all to often, write the history. My studies of Native Americans have convinced me that the original inhabitants of this country usually provide the most reliable accounts of these clashes.

About the movie: I agree with those who felt that the action scenes were well done and the scenery was breathtaking. The directing and acting was very good, especially Wes Studi and Robert Duvall. The movie, while it may not be historically accurate, gave the audience an insight into the issues and adventures of the main characters. This movie should be in the libraries of anyone who loves a good western or action movie, even those who appreciate a history lesson every now and then.

4 out of 5 stars GERONIMO THE BARBARIAN MEETS DIRTY HARRY .......2007-04-09

A movie never comes from nowhere. John Milius, who wrote GERONIMO - AN AMERICAN LEGEND, had already written in 1993, among others, the screenplays of Dirty Harry, Jeremiah Johnson, Apocalypse Now and Conan the Barbarian, nothing less. He's one of the most influential authors of the American film production of the last thirty years. The John Milius hero is a rebel who tries to impose his own law or his own ideas on the society he has to cope with. Who else could have dared to glue the word legend with the figure of Geronimo, the Indian terrorist in essence ?

Now, the historical accuracy of the events described in Walter Hill's GERONIMO - AN AMERICAN LEGEND is not so important, Hill and Milius's purpose was not to present a documentary film about one of the last Indian rebellions than to make us think about the motives that actuated 50 Chiricahuas warriors to defy 5'000 U.S. cavalry soldiers. Everybody is entitled to have his own opinion about the events pictured in the Walter Hill movie but we should nonetheless take the time to think about certain issues raised by Geronimo (the movie character, of course) : Why does the White Man need so much space ? If the White Men hadn't been so many, would they have still had the right to claim the Indian territories ? These questions need to be asked and, let's hope so, there always will be a John Milius to irritate us with them.

A DVD zone guilty conscience.

1 out of 5 stars Don't forget Tom Horn... Geronimo wouldn't have........2007-04-08

Geronimo was a renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior but not the tribal leader. He was in fact a war chief and medicine man with an uncanny ability to elude the US Cavalry. This movie might be made well but I'll never know because I won't watch any film so historically inaccurate. The cast includes all the major characters of this very real part of American history except the most important one other than Geronimo himself. Tom Horn. Trained by Al Sieber as a civilian scout and known as "Talking Boy" to the Chiricahua Apaches because he spoke their language better than any white man ever did, including Al Sieber whom he replaced as Chief Civilian Scout when Sieber retired. Tom Horn was the only man able to track Geronimo and twice talked the great Chiricahua Apache warrior into surrendering himself to the US Military authorities. I suggest that anyone interested in this part of American history should read Life of Tom Horn: Government Scout and Interpreter by Tom Horn. It's not great literature but it was written by the man himself. A man that Geronimo greatly respected and many white historians seem to want history to forget. Life of Tom Horn, Government Scout and Interpreter

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-04-01

I think this was a great movie telling a story of what happen to a great war chief Geronimo. I think what the government did to the indians was very bad. I wish they would make a sequel of what happen to Lt.Gatewood after he was transfered.

5 out of 5 stars No such thing as a free lunch.......2005-10-23

I could write a long review, but I won't. The day of the Zapatista uprising says it all. The day NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) came in to effect - some celebrated, these impoverished and brave indigenous people took up arms to make a point, force change, and make their voice heard.

What can you learn from men wearing black hoods to mask their identities, a fair bit.

People the world over have forgotten, there is no such thing as a free lunch. 'Free trade' is what I call - lipstick on a pig.

I recommend the following other DVDs: The Persuaders, Orwell Rolls in his Grave, Charcoal People, National Geographic Strange Days on Planet Earth, Life and Debt, a skeptical watching of Commanding Heights, and National Graphic's Taboo Season 1 and 2. The latter I recommend watching to realize that not everyone wants to live your lifestyle and people can have very different opinions on how to live. Then if you haven't, go travel abroad.

As for books - Native Wisdom for White Minds.

You might also be interested in researching - Jante Law - on Wikipedia. A life view that is embedded in Scandinavians.

5 out of 5 stars VERY powerful documentary of the struggle of the zapatistas.......2000-05-30

This is a very well made documentary about the zapatistas, the indeginous movement in chiapas, mexico. Shows very well the impact of Globalization, New World Order, New Economy, Neo-liberalism on the life of the poor of this world. Gives some history of their movement, but mainly an insight into their problems and struggle and situation. Explains really well their 'ideology' and reasons.

A must see for everybody interested in their movement or interested in seeing Globalization in action and it's devastating effects on the poor of this world. Buy it, watch it, pass it around. (You can order it online from: http://www.bignoisefilms.com/ ) This one will not leave you untouched...

Description

Separate myth from reality in the tragic collision of two cultures with dramatically different views of the world and of each other. For years, Apache tribes had resisted the advance of the pioneers and their threat to the traditional ways of life. But Geronimo fought the longest, becoming one of the most famous, feared and misunderstood Indian warriors in our history. Now at last, descendants of those Apaches who fought so long ago tell their story as it has never been told. They explain the mysteries of Apache power that made them so terrifying in battle, so skillful in escaping disaster.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Diverse Relations and Dynamics.......2007-04-26

It's easy to be misinformed that the Natives were here first, the European settlers moved them out of the way, no group was diverse, and that's that. This documentary shows how more diverse and complicated matters were between the two groups.

Geronimo's family was killed by Mexican soldiers, not American ones. Geronimo's band didn't want to be removed from their reservation and forced onto the land of another Apache band. That rival Apache band helped the American military to find Geronimo's group. While one American military leader acted in a supremacist fashion, the leader before him treated the Natives with relative respect. The tensions between the two racial groups were not just addressed by bloodshed, but by diplomacy as well.

It's also easy to assume that Native groups were wiped out. Many were. However, this documentary shows living Apache who are proud of Geronimo. Just as Mayans still exist even as their ancient pyramids were abandoned, Natives are still here in the United States.

It saddened me when a Native man asked a Native boy in "Smoke Signals," "Who is your favorite Native American hero?" and the boy replied, "No one!" This documentary adds to what is out there about Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Wilma Mankiller, and many other important Native American figures.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic film!.......2005-07-27

Although I love the music, I'm not normally a fan of hip-hop/rap movies, but this one really struck a cord with me.
Anne Frank's diary has been my favorite book since I was a small child. It's one I've related to through my life just as Cynthia did in this film.
It's very rare I can say this, but...I have nothing bad to say about this film. It is just phenomenal!

5 out of 5 stars Anne B. Realistic you are!!.......2005-02-15

Funny, my sister who is 13 years old wanted me to watch this movie, because it reminded her of me (some parts) by watching this movie, I already knew which parts she was talking about and SHE WAS RIGHT!! I like this movie a lot, and I was not expecting to hear TIGHT rhymes, although they were not "wh#re rhymes" like some people probably expected because of the ratings they gave this movie which is just ignorant. Her rhymes talk about REALITY. But I was expecting an inspirational approach, which was what I got. SOOOOOOO many people discourage me from my goals, talents etc... And I saw myself through this movie (in SOME PARTS). I mean, it seemed like I was watching myself on TV.

I do agree that you KNOW this is a black woman (like I am) who is portraying latina woman. Well, I dont think it is a difference, but Has anyone noticed that three of the characters from this movie were from the series OZ, which I am also a big fan of as well. The music that they played during the movie sounded like that video wh#re Gloria Velez, because she "raps" too. Also, the woman that played the main character did not seem like she was really rapping in the end. It seemed like she was lip singing. But, if someone is expecting this to just be a movie about Hardcore Gangsta rap, then this is NOT the movie for you, go to a concert. I was also expecting her to be really big in the end, but this movie showed more than just being a successful rapper with fancy cars and clothes and bags of money. Just putting yourself out there to alteast KNOW that you can do it is what really counts. So, I am glad that this movie did not show her becoming a big time rapper. Lets be realistic, it just does not blossom like that for everyone.

If you are looking for an inspirational movie that is REALISTIC (to me its realistic) then this is the movie for you.

1 out of 5 stars Anne B. Real Dull.......2004-10-08

This movie was very ill. Anyone in their right mind could tell Anne was a light skin Black, even though both her parents are Latino. What is the point of a Latina story if she is Black and her Latina friend was really Italian. Anne B. Real Rap was Good and better accepted if they made a sound track CD. How can someone make a Rap music movie without any sound track. A Rapper to be real for what? nothing The movie was senseless since it is hard to believe that someone could build a Rap career on the Raps of Anne, which are dull and lose because Anne came on stage saying she wrote them, Rapping. Then the movie ends, nothing about Anne or success as a good writer, which this movie lacked.
If this is a true story, it should stay in someones house on home video

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Experience.......2004-09-19

I'm no fan of most rap and hip hop or most poetry, for that matter, so I was amazed by this movie. It captured me. Not only did it give me a new appreciation for the art of "rhyming," but the compelling story and talented cast really won me over.

At the risk of mis-branding this film a "chick flick," Lisa France has tapped into an inner voice and angst that's too typical of American teenage girls (and women). When we allow others (let alone ourselves) to discourage us from pursuing our dreams and talents, we are our truly own worst enemies.

In reality, this is no "chick flick." It's a gritty slice of city life, with its share of violence and loss. You won't find any incarnation of Meg Ryan here (not even in the pleasant surprise of Jackie Martling's brief stint as a curmudgeonly teacher).

Simply put, I was swept away, by the music, by the energy, by the writing, by the acting, by the vision and visuals, and, of course, by the unique play of words flowing from the experience of this aspiring teen "rhymer" against the inspirational words of Anne Frank and the resulting evolution of this teenage girl.

This is a movie you will want to own and share with friends of all ages and watch over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The Real 8 Mile.......2003-10-23

I had the pleasure of viewing this feature at my university and talk with the director after. This movie to put it simply is amazing. Anne B Real captures the true story of a young girl with dreams beyond any of her friends and families comprehension. Half black and half latino, no believes she has a chance to make anything out of herself in the world. Death helps her find her way and helps Anne break out of the little box she was trapped in since her fathers death.

This movie is a must see for anyone who liked 8 mile. This would be a bigger hit, if 8 mile wouldn't have came out at the same time. Unlike 8 mile it doesn't sugar coat the way life is on the street, and doesn't rely on big names stars to help promote the film. There are a few known actors in the movie but for half of the actors, this is their first time in front of the camera.

The director is amazing in her camera work and her story line. She struggled hard to make sure there wasn't a single swear word in the entire movie, a feat never heard of these days. I look forward to seeing more of her films in the future and wish her luck on all her ventures.

    Product Description

A NEW World War II Documentary recently reviewed in the New York Times. This 5-Part independent project, filmed in a style similar to Ken Burns, follows the real-life story of a Philadelphia teenager who left his large Irish family to join the famous 101st Airborne Division during WWII. The film uses only real voices of WWII airborne veterans rather than voice-over narration. These aging troopers describe their personal war, one place and one incident at a time in the largest conflict in human history. Humble heroes recount jump training at Fort Benning; brief romances in England and a night jump into Normandy. The lone survivor of C-47 Plane #5, tells how his "lucky $20 bill" was signed by everyone before taking off to an unknown fate. A second combat jump into Holland precedes 72 days along Hell's Highway. These troopers came home with not only Purple Hearts, but also traumatic memories that still resonate as if they happened yesterday. Sisters and brothers describe a trooper's teenage years before their world was turned upside down after December 7th 1941. This story ends in the small town of Bastogne, soon to become a household word after the Christmas of 1944. Lives of a young Belgian boy and a paratrooper not much older, are miraculously saved and reconnected with a Prayer Card ...returned after 62 years. A year in the making, this independent documentary project uses interviews, vintage wartime Philadelphia home movies, personal photo collections, captured German film and material from the National Archives never seen before. The band of brothers weren't the only ones with a story. These veterans of the 501st & 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiments share some their most vivid memories for the first and probably the last time. Directed and edited by independent filmmaker and Vietnam Veteran Guy Anhorn, the project features original music, A Paratroopers Theme by Zak Rosa and My Brothers & Me by Chris Winward. François Truffaut's 1957 short "Les Mistons" (roughly translated to "The Brats") is an early testament to Truffaut's affinity with kids and his first exploration of impossible love. Five boys palling around one summer fall for a teen beauty, but as the narrator (one of the five) describes, "Too young to love Bernadette, we decided to hate her--and torment her." These adolescent boys are neither cute nor innocent, but Truffaut sympathizes with the frustration born of budding hormones and sexual mystery. In 1962, he revisited similar territory in the sketch "Antoine and Collette." The second film to feature alter ego Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), it was originally made for the omnibus film Love at Twenty but has outlived its companion shorts. As romantic and gently ironic as The 400 Blows is harsh and haunting, this modest 20-minute lark finds a teenage Antoine pursuing the lovely, lithe 20-year-old Colette (Marie-France Pisier) like a lovesick puppy dog. The comic sweetness of this episode sets the tone for all future Doinel films, and Léaud, who matured into the poster boy for the French new wave, displays the lanky charm and self-effacing egotism that propelled him through some of the greatest films of the next two decades. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Truffaut Shorts To Treasure.......2005-01-23

This review refers to "Les Mistons" and "Antoine & Colette" - Two Short Films by Francois Truffaut, DVD edition Fox Lorber World Class Cinema Collection...

If you are already a fan of Truffaut, then I don't have to tell you that he has quite a gift for filmmaking. If you are just getting to know him, these two short films are a good place to start. In the span of only 17 minutes("Les Mistons") and then again in 30 minutes("Antoine & Colette"), Truffaut manages to convey a story that captivates, with characters we care about, that draw you in from start to finish. These two will give you a taste of his work in both comedy and drama.

From 1957 "Les Mistons" (The Brats), finds a group of young boys, who have become obsessed with an "older woman". They are taken with her beauty, and intrigued by her behavior(especially her romantic escapades with her boyfriend). Not old enough or experienced enough in the ways of the world to show their admiration properly, the adolescents taunt and annoy her.

In another story of young love gone awry, "Antoine and Colette", a young man(Jean-Pierre Leaud) has fallen deeply for a girl he knows from school. She is friendly with him, but does not return the same deep affection he feels for her. He does everything imaginable to gain her attentions, including cozying up to her parents, and even taking an apartment across the street. This film, from 1962 is the second in the "Antoine Doniel" series.

At times showing their age, I thought the transfer of these old French shorts looked pretty good. The sound was always clear and distinguishable during both the dialouge and narration portions. The English subtitles were clear and well placed. Another reviewer mentioned they had trouble with a freezing problem at about the 23 minute mark of "Antoine", my copy did not have this problem.

Aspiring filmmakers, admirers of Truffaut, lovers of Short film, French film, and lovers of love in general, will find these to be pieces of cinema to treasure.

    Merci Beaucoup....enjoy...Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Les Mistons: What a discovery!.......2004-08-16

A boy bends down to smell the bicycle seat of a beautiful girl. A young woman laughs and giggles her way through a game of tennis with her lover. An elderly man sprays water at a young rascal. Forgettable yet utterly unforgettable moments are captured on film in Truffaut's enchanting short film LES MISTONS.

LES MISTONS is a beautifully conceived story that seizes the attention from start to finish. Truffaut brings together the artistic endeavour and human spontaneity that characterized the best of the French Nouvelle Vague in the '50s and '60s. It is a real pleasure to watch a simple tale told so engagingly, so cinematically, a tale in which the the smallness of everyday life intersects with the vastness of human existence and emotion.

1 out of 5 stars GREAT movies, LOUSY dvd.......2002-04-21

I am reviewing the dvd itself, not the 2 short films by Truffaut, which are great. You cannot watch the entire film of Antoine & Colette, because the picture freezes at 23 mins. into a 30 min. film. This is a manufacturing defect of which I informed Fox-Lorber well over a year ago. I must have purchased over ten copies from different sources at that time. All were the same on every dvd player I tried. Apparently Fox-Lorber doesn't care, because they keep re-issuing the dvd without fixing the problem. They have the same problem with their dvd release of Mrs. Dalloway. BE WARNED!!!

4 out of 5 stars The rise and fall of a great Great director........2001-06-29

Francois Truffaut's first three features are, for me, the most precious things in the universe, and if I am only allowed to take one thing to heaven it will be one of these. The rest of Truffaut's oeuvre, for some bizarre reason, is rather forgettable, ranging from the slight but entertaining ('Stolen Kisses') through the dense and stodgy ('The Green Room') to the plain embarrassing ('Such a Gorgeous Kid like me').

These two shorts go some way to providing an answer for this fall. 'Les Mistons' is a short made two years before Truffaut's first feature, when he was still best known as a polemical critic. It is a very sad tale about young lovers spied on by a group of brats, and has the casual tragic force of Renoir's 'A Day in the country' or Demy's later 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg'; and yet is most memorable for its sheer schoolboy-like joy in location shooting, trickery and allusion, affirming cinema's power over life's transience.

'Antoine and Colette', the second film in the Antoine 'The 400 Blows' Doinel series, was originally an episode in a portmanteau film 'Love at Twenty' (also featuring Marcel Ophuls and Andrej Wajda). It is a slick piece of entertainment about the romantic difficulties of a now very together young man. All the trauma and life of the first film is neatly ironed out.

    4 out of 5 stars MYSTERY GIRLS.......2000-04-21

Two years before LES 400 COUPS, french director François Truffaut shot LES MISTONS (1957), a short movie dealing with children and a young couple. Gérard Blain and Bernadette Lafont impersonate the lovers followed by the bunch of " mistons ". Both actors will become, with Jean-Claude Brialy who appears briefly as a character of the movie chosen by Gérard and Bernadette, THE actors of the french " Nouvelle Vague " (1958-1965).

It's quite strange to find in LES MISTONS a lot of themes Truffaut will treat in his next movies, for instance the tragic love affair (DEUX ANGLAISES ET LE CONTINENT, L'HISTOIRE D'ADELE H, etc...), the children (LES 400 COUPS, L'ARGENT DE POCHE).

ANTOINE ET COLETTE has been shot in 1962 for L'AMOUR A 20 ANS, a movie composed of four different films about the same theme. It's a movie absolutely necessary for those of you interested in the saga of Antoine Doinel, the cinematographic double of François Truffaut and young hero of THE 400 COUPS.

Since a dozen movies of François Truffaut are now available in the DVD standard zone 1, this DVD could be a valuable addition to your library.

    Good image and sound transfer.

A DVD for the curious ones.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! A great DVD at a great price!.......2003-09-13

I picked up this DVD because I had just seen Band of Brothers and wanted to know more about the airborne during WWII. Wow, what a treat this documentary was! First the format is very different - there was no narrator - instead the whole program is made up of interviews of Airborne vets and historians. It works very well and really puts you in their shoes. Very informative and accrate from what I could tell. Not only did I learn a lot about the airborne during WWII but I was rivited to the screen - very well done.

    There are two main programs:

Normandy - from the training before D-Day through to the fighting during the breakout.

Market Garden - A less well-known airborne mission that eventually ended in failure.

And a lot of good extras:

    Training
    Missions in:
    Sicily
    Italy and
    Southern France

    Highly recommended!!!
