Following vaguely in the footsteps of The People vs. Larry Flint, Dirty Pictures is a provocative retelling of an all-too-true story about the 1990 attempts to censor the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center's controversial Robert Mapplethorpe photography exhibit. The film gets directly at a quintessential, core principle that continues to fascinate Americans: Who gets to decide what forms of expression are valid? Does the constitutional right to freedom of expression apply to forms of expression you don't like? This film blends stock footage of both sides of the Cincinnati debate with actors' reenactments. James Woods's performance as the art museum's director Dennis Barrie is particularly impressive. The juxtaposition of real and fictional footage is extremely effective, and the result is a compellingly intelligent and emotionally gripping look at the issues of right-wing censorship in the arts.
The film contains images of Mapplethorpe's work and interpretations of its contexts and histories as well as insightful interviews with some of the subjects whose photos appeared in the original exhibit. But the art takes a back seat to the true hero of the film--the U.S. Constitution and its defenders. --Tara Chace

I didn't know Jenny could be funny!.......2007-06-07
Where in the world is Jenny McCarthy?
I have to admit that when Jenny was having her "15 minutes of fame", I wasn't really fond of her. I'd flick on another channel. I mean, really, Jenny McCarthy...please!
However, I was bored and had nothing to do so I watched *Dirty Love*. It was surprisingly funny. It was more like "I can't believe that just happened" funny. But still, funny is funny.
Rebecca (McCarthy) thought she had discovered her "the one" for love and life. That was until she busted her boyfriend banging some gal in their bedroom. Knowing that her (ex-)boyfriend gets easily jealous, Rebecca is set on revenge to make her ex-boyfriend see her surrounded by men. The problem is that none of her plans go well and thus, resulting in Rebecca being humiliated.
Surprisingly, Jenny McCarthy wrote the script for the film. So, this is jokes galore. Expect to laugh at some cheesy slapstick and jokes, whether they'd be on sex, drugs, periods and whatnots.
Keep in mind that this is a cheap production so lower your expectations. If you do that, then you'll do fine with some laughters.
Jenny McCarthy & Dirty Love.......2007-05-17
This movie has become one of my favorites. I adore Jenny McCarthy. She is beautiful, sexy, and one of the funniest women in film today.
If you haven't seen this movie, do yourself a favor and watch it. As long as you aren't easily offended. The humor is very adult oriented, but I like movies like this. I laughed the whole way through. Except for a couple of times, when she tugged at my heart strings and made me cry. I can only hope that Jenny does more movies like this. I would buy them as soon as they were available.
I honestly watched this movies about 7 times in a 3 day period. It was playing on the movie channels, and I watched it EVERY time that it was on, until finally I bought it for myself. And yes, I have watched it again since purchasing it.
If you like slapstick comedy, sarcasm, smartass comedy, then you will love this movie, with the totally smoking hot Jenny McCarthy, Carmen Electra and a host of other hot girls.
Let's just hope that she makes another movie soon.
very, very funny , a must get for your collection!!.......2007-04-07
I recently saw this film and laughed my tail off. some very odd scenes but hysterical. McCarthy is actually a pretty cool , funny , and interesting chick after seeing her on some talk shows and interviews. I dont rememember trailers or this movie coming out in the theatre, but from beginning to end we laughed , and if you saw (little man) you know what im pointing out , what a joke----should have just recorded the trailers on tivo and save myself two hours.
chick flick.......2007-04-03
this is a total chick flick. girl, i think this is great slapstick comedy. if you ever feel like your life is down, watch this movie i will make you laugh so hard that your fall on your a _ _. i love this movie.
Not all that great, but in all fairness...........2007-03-23
I did laugh and was mildly entertained and never bored with this
one. The DVD commentary also includes some other stories
that are also pretty funny and explain some of the pitfalls of an underfunded
movie, which explains some of the end product here, I would think.
Of course, I had seen the Ebert&Roeper review of this movie beforehand
so I was not expecting much. In fact, I was curious about a movie they
found so terrible. And "Dirty Love" is not all that great, it was not as bad
as I expected either.
My wife hated...HATED...this film, so I would not call it a "chick flick".

Description
In the tradition of Training Day and Man on Fire, Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Jerry Maguire) stars in this hard-edged story of a gangbanger turned cop who is forced to choose between his conscience and his loyalty to the code of blue all in the course of one day.
Having been a gangbanger at only 10 years old, Armando Sancho (Clifton Collins, Jr., Capote) always found acceptance in being a part of a group. The only thing better than king of the street? ' a gangster with a badge. Recruited into an undercover, rogue anti-gang unit of the LAPD at only 28 years old, Sancho brings his street smarts into the force that he swore to protect.
But the line between loyalty and protection becomes blurred when one night on a routine investigation, Sancho's partner Salim (Gooding) kills an innocent man. Unable to deal with his partner's actions and haunted by his conscience, Sancho agrees to testify against his superiors regarding the ongoing criminal enterprises of his squad in exchange for immunity for the murder.
As the hours wear on, Sancho's resolve begins to fade. The IA agents inform him his deal is off unless he can also bring in his partner to corroborate his testimony. Faced with a seemingly impossible task, Sancho realizes for the first time the enormity of the decision he has made.
Customer Reviews:
RIDIN' DIRTY.......2007-05-03
First of all, CHRIS FISHER's DIRTY is influenced by FUQUA's TRAINING DAY and that's a given fact. The whole mood is similar, and so are the shaking camera, the abuse of jump cuts and the modern Gangsta aspect. Other than that There's just Two more LAPD officers dealing with the ruthless streets of a town ruled by gangs... By the way it was also the subject of the legendary DENNIS HOPPER's COLORS years ago. None the less it would be unfair to see DIRTY as a TRAINING's rip-off. You see, TRAINING is about corruption (a crooked cop trying to manipulate an honest rookie) when DIRTY is mainly about loyalty, guilt and ultimately redemption.
In spite of the MTV video look that I usually dislike, I enjoyed that flick and will remember it forever. On top of the great talents involved (everybody is on point), it's honest about what it portrays. That whole world is dirty and they show it without watering it down. It's all about guns, drugs and money but as wicked as they are, people still got soul and may be like SANCHO says " you see things more clearly when you're dead ".
The corruption will overthrow the screen! .......2006-08-06
This talented and young director has made a well rounded and systematic movie around the huge labyrinths nestled underneath. Only the strong will survive and will remain undamaged in this jungle of white neck sinister game.
Two cops are the fundamental axis, the basis of a pyramid carefully built and rigorously articulated. A nasty officer who works out the embodiment of the perversion has a plan, and these cops will be from now his arms to follow the instructions. As you may guess all theory is engaging; they will be eventually well rewarded; this interesting puzzle of encountered interests will reach as you may expected a hazardous boiling point, where nobody will be sure about nothing. The violence is part of the drama, and is plainly justified; the shot angles, as well as the increasing tension make of this a singular movie to watch. A superb script that shows us the rottenness that lives, breaths and beats with absolute impunity beneath contaminated police dossiers. Unerring performances; Cuba Gooding is absolutely amazing as well as the rest of the cast. There is no hole along the way.
The redemption is never enough. Don't miss it under any excuse.
DIRTY is in every way Dirty...until the Zinger Ending!.......2006-07-03
DIRTY seems to be confused as to what it is. The viewer is lead to believe that the LAPD has an undercover anti-gang force made op of ex-gangbangers who know the streets and therefore know how to break the codes that allow gang crimes of drugs and violence to continue unfettered by arrests. Yes, we are all aware of the Rampart scandal that perhaps is the nidus for this story, but what DIRTY shows is a group of despicable, foul mouthed, evil, crime perpetrating opportunists who will do anything to make a hit - all 'protected' by a police force that condones their actions.
Cuba Gooding, Jr. is a fine actor whose recent roles have not allowed him to demonstrate his craft. Perhaps he wanted a role as a bad guy (in the vein of Denzel Washington, Richard Gere et al who opt for smarmy roles to 'prove' their acting grit!), but he is artificial in this film as a man willing and waiting to do filthy deeds without conscience. He is paired with the also fine actor Clifton Collins, Jr. as the Hispanic equivalent of Gooding's Black bad cop. The story jumps all over the place with so many subplots and characters identifiable only by their total body tattoo differences and hampered by a script that depends on the F word and the N word and M**F** word as a means of communication.
Gooding and Collins are partners and while Gooding seems to be the major offender to decency, Collins does little about it, leading us to believe he is an innocent victim to the Internal Affairs investigation that appears to be the endpoint of this drama. Just when the viewer is saturated by the dirt of this film's techniques and story, the gritty collision of loyalty and redemption enters at the very end, making reflection on the tale that has been assaulting our senses almost embarrassing for the viewer. In the police code, what is permissible, what is wrong, what is justifiable? Fighting crime with crime doesn't seem a viable answer, but we are left asking the question 'What is?' A disturbing film on many levels, not the least of which is the fact that Gooding's agent needs a heads up on finding this gifted actor some worthy roles! Grady Harp, July 06
Cuba dissapoints his fans.......2006-06-12
As the previous review stated, Cuba attempts to compete with "Training Day" and fails horribly. The plot is lacking, there is poor character development and excessive profanity. I would have given this movie less stars if it were possible. Save your money.
about the movie dirty.............2006-06-12
There are ample amount of actions in this movie which I bought from Singapore videoshops....hee hee but the story is basically about cops performing gang type of bad jobs instead of upkeeping the law in a country. This DVD film/movie is recommended to those whom are interested in this genre of film/movie.

Description
Shocking. Stunning. Brilliant. These are some of the words that described artist Robert Mapplethorpes controversial 1990 photo exhibit and this "gripping, provocative and alarming" (The Washington Post) film about the show's censorship is equally as captivating. Starring OscarÂ(r) nominees* James Woods (The General's Daughter) and Diana Scarwid (Inside Moves), Dirty Pictures delves into the uproar over right-wing censorship of the arts in a true-to-life talethat is "chilling" (Los Angeles Times)! When the director of the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Dennis Barrie (Woods), books a touring photo exhibit of the late Robert Mapplethorpe, he knows he's brought a major-league event to town. But when the Cincinnati sheriff (Craig T. Nelson) sees the sexually explicit photos, he shuts down the show charging Barrie with peddling obscenity! Determined to stand his ground, Barrie faces trial and risks losing his joband his familyto protect the right promised to every American by the Constitution'the freedom of expression! * Woods: Supporting Actor, Ghosts of Mississippi (1996); Actor, Salvador (1986); Scarwid: Supporting Actress, Inside Moves (1993)

Great movie!!.......2006-10-01
This was a great movie and a very important part of history for the freedom of choice!! Bravo for showtime with the presentation of this movie!!
Important movie.......2004-05-01
This is one of James Woods' best performances. I was also happy to see Diana Scarwid again. I've been a fan since "Mommie Dearest". This film was half movie and half documentary. Interviews and opinions of the people involved were shown. I gave four stars instead of five because even though it is definitely worth seeing, it seemed to get repetitive and long. Also interesting is that all the people who didn't like the photos were all over 70 (big surprise) and still believe gay people have cooties. So there was bias there, for sure. Good movie.
Following in the footsteps of The People vs. Larry Flint?.......2003-02-17
Dirty pictures in no way follows in the foot steps of The People vs. Larry Flint. This movie is primarily from the perspective of a midwest gallery curator who had brought in a touring exhibit of Robert Mapplethorpe's work. The movie is interlaced with interviews of people who had worked with or had known Mapplethorpe as well as images of his photographic works.
This is an Excellent purchase that raises questions in the mind of the veiwer. It is entertaining and to an extent educational on the art of Mapplethorpe, constitutional rights, and how people judge art based on "Their Values and Tastes."
