Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties) made this pointed, 1975 comedy-drama about class and sex conflicts. Mariangela Melato plays a rich woman marooned on an island with a crude sailor (Giancarlo Giannini). The two initially assume their accustomed class relationship with one another--she expects service, he grumbles about it--but then a revolution takes place and the subjugation is reversed. The film comes down on you like a hammer, but Wertmüller adroitly traces the shifting nuances of the relationship, and the two stars are excellent. Numerous scenes stick in the memory many years after one viewing. --Tom Keogh

Description

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean, Swept Away is Lina Wertmüller's most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On an elegant yacht cruising off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella, a rich and stunning capitalist, enjoys tormenting Gennarino, a Communist sailor. Fate weaves a different scenario and roles become reversed when the two find themselves stranded together on a deserted island. Raffaella must submit to Gennarino in order to survive which culminates in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must determine if their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.

5 out of 5 stars Two of Italy's best in one film: Giannini and Melato.......2007-07-04

The consensus best film of Lina Wertmüller is this gem of a story, a film and two performances which put the actors on the world map. (Ignore the Madonna remake.) Mariangela Melato was (and is) a stunner. And Giancarlo Giannini is every American's notion of a European actor (even moreso in the recent HANNIBAL). The remastered version enhances the brilliant color of the "Blue Sea of August" and replaces skin scenes deleted from earlier editions for some reason. The bitchiness of MM inthe first fifteen minutes is irritating, but it establishes her character and is therefore necessary. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Objectively Observing the Motions of a Preposterous World.......2007-05-06

Swept Away is criticized by Tania Modleski for poking fun at feminists. That is part of the film's accomplishment, though: Swept Away is culturally valuable for its ability to poke fun at everyone whose flaws warrant it. Wertmuller presents us with extreme characters in absurd situations--characters we love to hate but who are still capable of moving us when they express sincere emotional tenderness and vulnerability. This story explores the ways in which political and economic divisions allow pig-headed people to treat each other. And it certainly doesn't support the oppression of women, as a short-sighted viewing of the film may suggest, because Wertmuller emphasizes the notion that relationships based on one's ability to dominate the other perpetually fail. Whether that dominance comes from political, economic, or gender roles, domination and subjugation create such mistrust in both parties that love cannot sustain itself. Wertmuller masterfully creates type characters--the rich bitch and the vengeful Sicilian--who turn into human beings outside of society and touch the audience with their attempt and failure at love. The elements of composition, music and lighting are used in such a beautiful way that the audience is convinced throughout the couple's stay on the island that love is possible, despite the divisive odds against them, and so their fall is that much more saddening at the end of the film. And the often harsh dialogue and action are Wertmuller's bright way of presenting a farcical tale to her audience, daring us to judge the characters lest we be judged.

4 out of 5 stars Swept Away...by an unsual desitny in the blue sea of august.......2007-04-26

Let's start withn a few important items.

This is really a 4.5* film. It would be a five star but some scences have lost their punch and the scene where Gennarino almost rapes Rafaella is really now in poor taste.

Second, this DVD is only in Italian and does not have the English dub (which is weird as the video I have of this film has the dub) on it - this really does not matter to me as I always watch the original language with subtitles. But switch the Italian from mono to 5.1 for better sound quality.

Third, the review title is the English full title of this film. The Italian title is Travolti da un insolito Destino nell'azzurro mare D'Agosto.

This movie has three acts. Act 1 - Status Quo - Rafaella and her friends rent a yacht. Rafaella is an overly opinionated and always ready to tear down anyone else. Rafaella is also very rude to the yacht staff. Gennarino is the one of the crew members that Rafaella loves to demean. (The funny thing is that in 1975, her views were very controversial but now she seems very reasonable.)

Act 2 - Castaway - Rafaella has over slept (to 7 p.m.)and demands to be taken to the cove that her friends are swimming. Gennarino is told to take her in the rubber dingy. On the way the dingy has motor problems and they go adrift. Eventually they wind up on a deserted island. This becomes a variation of Taming of the Shew. Rafaella is her demanding shrew but Gennarino realizes he holds all the cards on the island and uses them to break Rafaella. (The main scene gets ugly when assaults her, rips her clothes off almost rapes her - this is just too much in today's standards.) Eventually, Rafaella becomes his willing subject and falls in love with the primal man. (Because he is nothing like the men in her life.)

Act 3 - Reality - The two are rescued. But their love remains when they return. The question is will it survive reality?

This is the best film of Italian director Lina Wertmueller. She shows us two disagrable people and then makes them intense and interesting. Giancarlo Giannini is Wertmueller's favorite actor and he give a fantastic performance as out antihero. Mariangelo Melato shows that a shrew can have multiple dimensions.

This is a great movie and if you take it in the context of the time made, it is even better.

4 out of 5 stars gott what I ordered.......2007-03-08

The DVD was fine. I ordered this bases on something I had seen about 30 years ago. The quality of the product was great. My mistake was that I didn't realize it was in Italian w/ English subtitles. We watched it w/ the subtitles. The product was excellent and all that it was advertized to be.....it was MY fault for the mistake. I need to read and reread what things say before I order.

5 out of 5 stars Swept Away by This Film.......2007-01-04

Linda Wertmüller's 1974 Swept Away looks at one of those infamous elephants in the living room that no one wants to talk about - sex and politics. Little wonder it's one of the most controversial movies ever made. Exquisitely filmed in the Mediterranean, Swept Away is the story of two people from very different worlds thrown together by chance. Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini) is a poor sailor working aboard a chartered yacht. Raffaella (Mariangela Melato) is the beautiful, wealthy woman who chartered it. Raffaella treats Gennarino like dirt - constantly insulting and ridiculing him - and he has no choice but to let her. She is capital; he is labor. He must put up with her abuses because he needs her money. That fact gives her power over him. But when the two of them become stranded on a deserted island, the tables are quickly turned. Gennarino has the skills needed to survive. Raffaella's only skills consist of shopping, sunbathing and ordering servants around. If she wants to survive, she must give Gennarino what he wants, and what he wants is nothing less than her complete physical, mental and emotional submission. At first, she resists, later she consents. Eventually, she comes to want - even love - his domination. It would be easy to dismiss Swept Away as pure male fantasy, until you remember that it was made by a woman and a feminist. Wertmüller asks us, with all the subtlety of a Howitzer, to look at the complex relationships between sex and power, and how easily those relationships can be flipped on their heads. You might not like what Wertmüller has to say. You'll probably hate the way she says it. Or not! But love it or hate it, Swept Away is - like the elephant - hard to ignore for long.

Madonna gives her most believable performance as Amber, a rich woman on a sea cruise who expects the world to obey her every whim. She and a high-spirited crew member (Adriano Giannini) are marooned on a small deserted island; the feud that sprang up between the two on the ship becomes an all-out war, then transforms into lustful desire as Amber finds that losing status opens up a new side to herself. Some people will want to see Swept Away for the simple pleasure of seeing Madonna be slapped; more demanding filmgoers will, sadly, be left wanting. Though the movie purports to be a satirical examination of capitalism (as was the original 1974 version), its vague discussion of money and power adds up to very little. The love story is surprisingly sincere, making Swept Away a standard romantic potboiler with gorgeous tropical backdrops. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Swept Away.......2007-02-18

"Swept Away" frustrated me because it had the potential to be a great movie if the story had been developed more from the emotional, character refining perspective while the couple was on the deserted island. Madonna should really stick to singing and leave the acting to others. The only reason I keep this movie is for the melancholy, haunting music (Speigel im Speigel) at the end of the film. That piece makes it all worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Bad as People Say...But Not Very Good Either........2007-02-10

"Swept Away" is based on a 1974 Italian-language film that was written & directed by the first woman to ever receive a Best Director Oscar nomination, Lina Wertmuller. As I stated in my review for the Hollywood remake of 'The Vanishing,' Hollywood tends to take notice when a popular film is made in another country. It took Hollywood 28 years to take notice of "Swept Away" but it did and with really bad results. People find anything and everything to bash about this film. People have complained about Madonna, Guy Ritchie, the story, the acting, anything they can. The movie has good things about it, some of the "bad stuff" in the movie isn't as bad as one would expect...Problem is, Ritchie is a director that handles crime capers ('Snatch') better than this kind of material. As Roger Ebert noted in his review for this film (he loved the original, much like I did), I'm paraphrasing, "the original film was about something. This isn't." True. Ritchie's remake takes a story with meaning and a message and turns it into a story. A cliched story. The story is much like the original. Madonna plays Amber, a spoiled rich woman on vacation with her husband (Bruce Greenwood) and some friends. Onboard is a Communist fisherman named Giuseppe "Pepe" Esposito (Adriano Giannini. Possibly related to the original actor Giancarlo Giannini?), whom Amber verbally abuses. She did the same in the original, but here she's much more abusive. So abusive, in fact, it's a wonder her friends and husband want to be around her. She nicknames Pepe, Pee-Pee and Guido, and acts obnoxious. One day, when she wants to go swimming and has Pepe take her out their raft's engine dies and they end up stranded on a deserted island. The power in their "relationship" shifts and Amber finds herself at the mercy of Pepe, who (as far as I recall) also becomes more abusive than Amber both physically and verbally. Eventually they fall in love. Before I start listing what's wrong compared to the original, I want to give props to Ritchie for not (completely) changing the ending. Throwing in a certain aspect of the ending, he completely ruined the message the original ending had...But at least he didn't cave in to the typical Hollywood happy ending. One of the biggest complaints people have about the film is Madonna. She gets so much negativity towards her acting in the film and she's not terrible. Madonna is a decent actress, but she doesn't really have the acting chops to pull of this kind of material. If she weren't married to Guy Ritchie, she wouldn't be in this movie. She does her best and it doesn't even rank in the top 10 worst performances I've seen in a theatrical film (look at Keanu Reeves in "Dangerous Liaisons"). Giannini is, actually, superb in his role and better suited for the role than the original Giannini. This might have been the point, but, in the original, Giancarlo Giannini was very dirty, disheveled, and greasy looking guy. In this film, Adriano Giannini is very similar but isn't quite as dirty looking which made it more believable to me that the Amber character would fall in love with him. Ritchie tries to spice this up with comedy, but a lot of jokes fall flat. In fact, some of the funniest scenes (and this may sound sexist, but it's just the way it looks) are when Pepe slaps Amber. I don't think Ritchie meant for the audience to find that funny. Another mistake Ritchie made was including fantasy sequences (there's only two) in which Pepe imagines throwing Amber overboard and another in which he imagines her dancing. They don't work and were very cliched. In the end, much like The Vanishing, the original was entertaining, beautifully filmed, well acted, and true. The remake is entertaining, beautifully filmed, decently acted, forced, and false. This movie could be remade and it could be remade well...People who watch a film looking for entertainment and not quality might even like this movie. It's certainly not as bad as people make it out to be. If you haven't seen the original or this film, however, go see the original. It's a much better film on all levels.

GRADE: C

1 out of 5 stars Another bad movie.......2007-01-23

The DVD quality was fine, I suppose we are only to comment on that. BUT, this movie was even worse than I'd heard. Unless you're one of those zombie fans who would buy anything of hers, stay away. Far away. After all, this is the movie that ruined her husband's career.

1 out of 5 stars Laughably Bad.......2007-01-19

I struggle to think of something positive to say about this film. Well, the ocean looked nice. Swept Away is laughably bad. Madonna is a horrendous actress, and she looks terrible in this film. Swept Away, based of course on The Taming of the Shrew, plays more like a BAD remake of Overboard, starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Overboard, which was no masterpiece, was a far better film though.

1 out of 5 stars terrible "romance" movie.......2007-01-17

I cant believe this is under the "romance" section, what a terrible movie. I was prepared for Madonna's rude performance, but I was not prepaired for the horrible, abusive attitude of the italian. Worste "romance" movie I've EVER seen.

The first woman ever nominated for the Oscar® for Best Direction gets her own DVD collection, a grab bag of five titles plus a long interview. The Oscar nod came at the end of a crowded run of provocative movies in the first half of the 1970s, during which time Lina Wertmuller became an obligatory name to drop at cocktail parties. The DVD set is anchored by two of those 1970s must-sees. Swept Away, which became one of the art-house hits of its era (lots of intellectual-political stuff, but lots of skin, too) strands prattling socialite Mariangela Melato and insolent deckhand Giancarlo Giannini on a desert island together after her yachting party goes awry. The power games between the two, and the endless socio-economic justifications for same, are fun to watch, and the beauty of the actors isn't bad, either. (Sweep away thoughts of the Madonna remake.) The DVD set uses the shortened U.S. release title for this film: it's really Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny on the Blue Sea of August.

Seven Beauties is the film that brought Wertmuller the Oscar nomination. Giannini takes the lead role again (he copped a heroically earned Oscar nomination too), as a Neapolitan ne'er-do-well who ends up in a Nazi concentration camp. Wertmuller's wild approach may be all over the place, but the movie certainly is alive. The remainder of the DVD package can't live up to these two films, although Summer Night (full title: Summer Night, with Greek Profile, Almond Eyes, and Scent of Basil) has echoes of Swept Away. Melato returns to the heroine role, but the edginess of the earlier film is replaced by a gaudy fantasia about a wealthy woman who kidnaps a sort of environmental terrorist and sexually dominates him. As hotsy-totsy as that sounds, the movie feels like something Wertmuller's done before, although it's beautifully shot and Melato is scrumptious.

The other two films are The Nymph, a sturdy-enough but minor 1996 film about a beleaguered girl whose harsh village life changes when she meets a soldier (the era is WWII); only problem is, his family expects him to marry a virgin. Stefania Sandrelli is in the cast. Distinctly less watchable is Ferdinando and Carolina, a rambunctious 1999 historical comedy set in 18th-century Naples. The subject matter gives Wertmuller a chance to dig into her favorite subjects, sex and politics, but with lesser returns. The "extras" disc is essentially a 78-minute interview with Wertmuller. It's perfectly enjoyable, if a little "inside" to the Italian cinema. The woman does know how to talk--you can see how she beguiled her way to the top of European cinema for a while. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Wertmuller films plus more..........2007-03-11

If you haven't seen these very funny films that are all tales of class conflict and the humor of it, these are all a real treat. I've watched them translated, but they lose a lot of the animation that hearing the Italian version gives the words.

4 out of 5 stars Calling this set an 'Ultimate Collection' is pure hyperbole..........2005-09-12

First off, of the 5 films, only TWO are 16:9 enhanced-c'mon FOX-er-KOCH-LORBER-it is nearly 2006-not 1998.
Second, they leave a gaping hole in this set-two of her more well-know films here in America are missing: LOVE AND ANARCHY and THE SEDUCTION OF MIMI.
If you are going to do a collection of LW films-then DO IT RIGHT!

What a half-assed attempt.

That being said-the remastered SWEPT AWAY is a much better looking transfer than the VHS rot transfered to disc before now.
SUMMER NIGHTS is also a very good transfer.
Even SEVEN BEAUTIES-which is 4:3 Letterbox has been remastered and looks pretty good.
Its just that it would have looked excellent had it been 16:9 enhanced.

The rest seem to be OK, though I recall one film had much dirt and other artifacts
throughout.
I probably should rate this set just 3 stars-but being such a fan of LW-I have upped it to 4.
Looks like FOX-LORBER can change their name, but not their lackluster way of doing things.

5 out of 5 stars Kiss the Master's Hand!!!.......2005-09-07

I must admit, i have only seen Swept Away... and Seven Beauties from this collection, but Wertmuller is the best Italian filmmaker i have experienced. I picked up this collection today and cannot wait to see the other films, tho why some of the films are in widescreen 4:3 and some are formatted for 16:9 is lazy.

--Tom Keogh

The Britannia Beach Disaster: Two of Canada's worst natural disasters happened at the Britannia Mine Complex in the rugged Coast Mountains of southwest British Columbia in 1915 and 1921. Together the two events killed 93 people. In the 1915 disaster, a catastrophic landslide at Jane Camp killed 56 people. Six years later, in the evening of October 28, 1921, a sudden outburst flood struck Britannia Beach, the main living quarters site of the Britannia Mine. A wall of water, reported to be 20 metres high, raced down the side of the mountain from the mine complex and swept through the village. More than 50 of the 110 houses in the community were destroyed by the flood or swept out to sea. Thirty-seven people drowned in the flood. Cyclone Tracy: Cyclone Tracy came ashore Darwin, Australia on Christmas Eve 1974, damaging or destroying 90% of Darwin's buildings. The storm sustained maximum winds gusting from 148 to 187 miles per hour. Every tree in Darwin was stripped of its foliage. Rainfall totalled 8 inches. 21 vessels were sunk. Some residents took precautions, but many did not, apparently based on the previous erratic behaviour of Cyclone Selma, which had been forecast to hit Darwin but had changed course. Looting was reported. Electricity, water, and telephone utilities were cut. News of the damage to Darwin was delayed for 10 hours by communications outages. Within six days, 35,000 of the city's 41,000 residents were evacuated by air or road. The airport was rapidly cleared, and Royal Australian Air Force and civilian aircraft airlifted food, water, and medicine in and refugees out to hospitals and camps in Queensland. Following the storm, the name "Tracy" was retired from the rotation of cyclone names. 66 people died, 160 were determined missing, 790 injuries were reported, and 36,000 were made homeless.
