The shadow of World War II falls over this stateside film noir thriller about a GI paratrooper (Humphrey Bogart) who trails his AWOL war buddy to a treacherous city populated by gamblers, goons, pug cops, and the smoky, suspicious Lizabeth Scott, a seductive femme who may be fatale. Bogie's tight lipped, war hardened intensity dominates the B roster of supporting actors (Morris Carnovsky as a finicky nightclub owner with a gambling sideline, Marvin Miller as his brutal baby-faced thug) and the plot echoes with elements of earlier Bogie classics The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon recast on a low budget. Scott is, for all her fog-voiced sultriness, no Lauren Bacall, but her mannered performance is appropriately ambiguous and the film's cynical edge, ruthless desperation, and tarnished view of small-time hoodlums with big dreams casts a darker shadow unique to Hollywood's postwar funk. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Noir for Noir Fans.......2007-06-06
As "Dead Reckoning" opens, Humphrey Bogart is a U.S. Army Captain, chasing one of his men who has gone AWOL. The trail leads to an eponymous Southern town, where HB finds the guy has been murdered! There are good early noir scenes: the dark church, dreary morgue, dingy hotel room, menacing cops-and a beautiful woman! She is none other than the classic good girl/bad girl, Lizabeth Scott. (Bogey narrates DR throughout via flashback while telling his tale to a fatherly Army chaplain). Bogey's Southern trip leads to a strange brew of murder, lies, conceit, double-cross, blackmail - and a secret marriage! Scott is at the heart of it all and plays her role to the hilt. She and Bogey make a nice pair and overshadow the supporting cast. Other reviewers have compared Scott to Lauren Bacall. This reviewer is an LS fan. It says here that to compare the two ladies is to compliment Miss Bacall! This review won't divulge the ending. Does Bogey find out who murdered his buddy? Folks will just have to watch for themselves. DR is definitely recommended for noir fans. Those new to the genre may be somewhat less satisfied but the movie may just make some new fans too. If DR has a weakness, it lies in that awkward fadeout. What were the suits at Columbia Pictures thinking? It must have been a last minute substitute for the original. A final question: Was Marvin Miller (the guy who played the heavy, Krause), the same fellow from the 50s TV drama "The Millionaire"?
A long way behind "Gilda" in likability..........2006-12-25
"Dead Reckoning" is somewhat of a rehashing of the plots and dialog of "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep," but it contains much more visual violence... It is a typical Hollywood film noir of the post-war but a long way behind "Gilda" in likability...
Bogart is again portraying his now all-too-familiar role of the sardonic cynic with his own moral code who, this time, is on the trail of a killer who has murdered a wartime paratrooper friend...
Lizabeth Scott is cast as Bogart's femme fatale, obviously hoping to exploit her close resemblance to Lauren Bacall... Unfortunately, like Bacall, her first few films found her equally awkward and expressionless...
Good but not great.......2006-09-15
I won't rehash the plot, other than to say it is about as plausible as any other film noir, and more understandable on a first viewing than, say, the Big Sleep. But it somehow lacks the monumental quality of that movie, mostly because of weaker characterization. Bogie has some great lines, and his performance carries the movie along. Lizabeth Scott smoulders, but never really catches fire, and her southern accent could use some work. The bad guys aren't quite bad enough, and the copper is a little too stock. Nonetheless, a tense psychological thriller that will not disappoint, and is worth watching more than once. One day, someone will write a book about why the forties produced so many gun-toting femme fatales. Statistically, men kill their women and not vice versa, although you'd never guess that from this genre. But hey, it makes for good (and sometimes great) cinema.
Run-of-the-mill film-noir production.......2005-12-15
Humphrey Bogart in a fairly routine film-noir murder mystery set on the Gulf Coast. Bogey's army buddy, about to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, suddenly disappears and then turns up murdered. Bogey investigates and finds out the guy was involved in a murder and apparent underworld coverup, though Bogart is convinved he's innocent.
Of course there's a doll in the middle of it all - Lizabeth Scott, who's acting is not much to rave about - and sure enough she's the real murderer who's allowed Bogey's buddy to take the rap. Bogart falls for her, of course, but at the end is ready to turn her in (honor over love any day), but she dies in a preposterous car crash before he gets the chance. The script is pretty weak and most of the actors seem to be just going through the motions, though Bogey is very good.
Post-War Noir.......2005-10-24
Humphrey Bogart is a paratrooper coming home from WWII in the company of a comrade due to get the Congressional Medal of Honor. On the train to Washington DC the hero jumps out and does his best disappearing act. Bogart soon learns the man was in the Army under an assumed name and is determined to find out who he really was.
The film has many noir moments to relish. It opens with the scene of a city at night in the pouring rain. An illuminated sign proudly announces we've arrived in "Gulf City. Paradise City of the South". Other great shots include one from inside a telephone booth and the faux art deco nightclub where Bogart calls the nervous male bartender, "sweetheart". We also get a nice shadowy noir underworld shot inside the city morgue. In addition there is a great scene of Bogart, trying to kill time in a hotel room, where he phones the front desk and mocking talks to them in a silly southern accent of his own devise.
The moment we first gaze upon femme fatal Lisabeth Scott is a heart stopper. When she says to Bogart, "Where have we met?" he replies, "In another guy's dream". In additon Morris Carnovsky is very good as an icy cold creep.
The technique and dialogue admittedly outweigh the story and the fourth star here is really for the Bogart performance. A lesser fan of his than I may be less impressed.

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good! .......2007-05-15
This was a hopeful tragedy. I bought this because I love Matthew Macfadyen movies. And although he does not have a large role in this-- I found the entire film rather enjoyable. Paul Bettany is excellent! The cinematography is raw -- you can feel the cold and almost taste the grit -- and the story is beautiful. How it all enfolds... well let's just say, I thought the film surprisingly good.
Amazon Incorrect Aspect Ratio.......2007-04-19
I don't own the DVD, but am considering buying it. The aspect ratio of the DVD is listed by Amazon as being 1.66:1; this is probably a mistake. Amazon UK states 2.35:1 as the aspect ratio of their DVD version (this is the correct aspect ratio of the movie). Can anyone comment if the US version is also 2.35:1 and if it is an anamorphic transfer? As for the movie itself, it is a thriller unusually set in medieval times, beautifully photographed with excellent performances by Willem Dafoe and Paul Bettany. 4 stars.
UPDATE May 23, 2007
I've bought a Region 4 version... For those who care, the transfer is a great-looking Anamorphic Widescreen one with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This is most probably the same as Region 1, so the aspect ratio info posted by Amazon is incorrect. I should also mention that the DVD case does not state that the Widescreen transfer is anamorphic/enhanced for 16X9 TVs, although it is!
More Character Piece Than Thriller.......2007-03-10
THE RECKONING is one of those films that grows on you as you continue watching. Shakespearean in quality, and beautifully filmed in Andalucia, Spain and at Hedingham Castle near Essex, England, the 14th century period piece is given over to some excellent shots of the landscape as well as some impressive acting.
Paul Bettany (THE DA VINCI CODE) stars as Nicholas, a priest on the lam after fornicating with a married woman and then accidentally killing her husband in self-defense. Hiding out in the forest, Nicholas encounters a troupe of hard-worn actors traveling between towns. Amongst them is their new leader Martin (Willem Dafoe, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS), Tobias (Brian Cox, RUNNING WITH SCISSORS), Sarah (Gina McKee, MIRRORMASK), and Stephen (Simon McBurney, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND). Initially unwilling to take on a new person, the company neglects Nicholas' advances to join up with them. But through persistence, they eventually take him into their confidence.
Nicholas moves farther and farther away from his old township but closer and closer to danger as his morality catches up with him via a deaf, healer wrongfully accused of killing a young boy. Martin (Dafoe), tired of doing the same old religious plays, decides to visit the condemned woman to find out whey she did it and to see if they can make a new stage show out of it. Nicholas accompanies him and what they discover is chilling. They both know she couldn't have done it via time-frames and her location at the time of the murder. But they can't go against the leader of the town, Lord De Guise (Vincent Cassel, OCEAN'S TWELVE), who's legal council has already convicted her.
When the new play runs for the first time, the townspeople shout it down, telling the players that the boy couldn't have died at the hands of the healing, deaf woman. Faced with revealing Lord De Guise's wrongful imprisonment and perhaps exposing someone close to his Lordship, the acting company must make a self-sacrificing decision. And it is during this time that Nicholas' dirty little secret about why he left his hometown comes seeping out.
More a character piece than its labeled "thriller/action" genre, The Reckoning has some strong performances from Dafoe, Cox, Bettany and the perfectly evil Cassel.
The downside to the story is that it takes a while (quite a while) to get moving. But for those who hang in there til the end, the reward is worth it.
Pretty Good.......2007-03-07
I thought this film was rather good. I was not surprised by the course of the film but was impressed by the way it played out.
The acting was lovely and the scenery was gritty and real. My favorite scene was when the play was first put on and the crowds reaction to it.

Description
Blood spatter evidence first came to prominence in the murder trial of Dr. Sam Sheppard. We see how it has developed since 1955, and helped solve two Washington State cases. When Kimberly Wilson was found strangled, police went to tell her family--and stumbled upon the bodies of her father, mother, and sister, with blood splattered throughout the home. And when reporters for a Bainbridge Island paper discover blood dripping from their ceiling, police find the body of a brutally beaten woman.

Well Done.......2006-11-03
This is a very well done crime information series. I applaud the attention to detail throughout the entire series. I am, however, especially drawn to this particular 'episode' because my daughter had the priveledge of playing the part of Kimberly Wilson in the crime reinactment sequences. I would recommend "Blood Splatter" to anyone who is interested in crime-scene investigation programs.

Customer Reviews:
An unworthy addition to a series........2003-07-31
I honestly feel hurt that the creators of arc the lad decided to make one of the most boring dvds possible. This series has just gone downhill though. I have seen all of it except dvd 3, but can clearly point out many problems with it. The series starts out good, a fresh character and his dog to get you going. By the end though, you could probably care less about everyone. This dvd shows how bad you can turn a series with just a few episodes.
You meet up with Clive, that evil guy that is always evil. Apparently he is evil because he likes being evil(that is his entire motivation). He wants to open some box(like the box is crazy and has these mysterious powers like arc) that will turn stuff into demons, or something. Anyways Eliza is just a sub character that really isn't that cool, shes just there for a sappy love story, and Elk's motivation. Elk finally seems to "understand" that he needs to stop whining over stuff and just be a man about it. It isn't all that glorious. Anyways, the problem is action. The series does not have enough action and this dvd seems to try to avoid action at all costs. We are gonna see shu and tosh fight together? No, they decide to cut out the fight right before it starts, which is totally stupid, because the fight would have rocked. We are going to see that old dude, merchant, and the drummer boy fight?(i forget the names because the characters were boring) No, they decide to show an explosion and bam cut out of that fight scene too. Ok so we go to this temple thingy. "Guess what, lots of talking." This quote I think really captures the essence of that last episode or 2.
Than with like, a flash of light, it ends. What was that? People like die than come back and die again but are still alive? Dude the creators just went totally off topic. Possibly the most idiotic thing they could of done and did do was try to make it a happy ending, yet everyone is shocked at everything. They try to move this thing for the plane and everyone is like, "Omg can they move it?" Shut up and help them! Theres always a problem, heres a tip, stop being so shocked at everything and start acting like real people.
In closing, this review is basically to tell you that this series lacks many things, and probably the ending does the series as much justice as evangelion's ending. And if you haven't seen evangelion's ending, it's horrible, confusing, and doesnt explain anything. Its one of those endings where you make your own conclusion, that is why it is bad.
It was good until the end.........2002-06-12
Arc the Lad was one of the best anime's I have ever
watched(and my first anime also...)The storyline although based on the game was wonderful and left me on edge the whole time.
But like the curse of some anime's before it around the last few episodes the story fell apart and left many unanswered questions for the watcher. But up until the end I highly recomend
Arc the Lad.
Great show except for the ending.......2002-02-15
I see this alot in anime. Shows like Arch the Lad are absolutly wonderful until the last few episodes and then they just fall apart. I loved this series all the way up to about the last one or two episodes. Im not sure if this is the last DVD in the set but if it is, I was rather disapointed by it. Also there seems to be some sort of error on the chapters index.

Bonanza Volume 5.......2004-05-12
I'm a fan of Bonanza and I like horses, cowboys, cattle, etc.
This is a great TV show but, a little bad transfer on this DVD and this DVD is not terrible except, they removed the original theme music and the video is washed out. I don't care about it.
There are four episodes on one disc:
1. Day of Reckoning
2. The Avenger
3. The Ape
4. Breed of Violence
My favorite episode on Volume 5 is "Breed of Violence."
In this episode "Day of Reckoning":

"Breed of Violence" is a very good episode and David Lang is one of the best screenwriters and wrote other two Bonanza episoses. I think David Lang could probably eat white rice with ketchup and toasted bread and butter and we'd call David Lang "The David Lang Bread and Rice Guy" and make of the meals called "DAVID LANG'S SPANISH BREAD ROLL TOAST,WHITE RICE AND CORN ON THE COB" and that'd be the best meal ever to have for lunch or dinner and you should have it sometime if you go to New England. Delicious!
I hope you all love Bonanza!
I loved, liked, enjoyed and I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RECKONING.......2004-02-23
Excellent movie, great story line as well as photography.
A movie you can watch over and over and get something new out of each time.
Cinematography is superb.......2003-12-26
Wow! For a first production by a new director who also cast himself in the movie, this was great! The scenery and shots were superb as was Rodriguez's use of light and sound. Very dramatic and in the true western genre. Hope this is the first of more to come.
Thoroughly enjoyed!.......2002-11-23
Excellent performance by a cast and crew of friends. Directed with a passion and flair for the feel of the Old West. Very entertaining and well written.
pure enjoyment.......2002-11-23
When one considers that this is a FIRST movie for a new director, producer, starring role, etc., you have to agree that it's a terrific movie. I found shades of Louis L'Amour, and L'Amour fans will love this one. We found the movie riveting and the storyline captivating. The scenery is fabulous and very authentic for the era. We were particularly interested in the sound effects which tended to intensify the mood of the movie. It's the kind of movie you'll watch again and again over a period of time. We're looking forward to more movies from this new director. He's a refreshing addition to Hollywood!!
Great Movie!!!.......2002-11-22
I loved it!!! If this film maker has any other films, I'd like to know what they are so that I can see more of his work.

Murdock and Johnny Drake (William Prince) are Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, en route to Washington by train. Drake hops off and disappears, leading Murdock on a hectic manhunt. Upon meeting Drake's former girlfriend Coral Chandler (Lizabeth Scott), Murdock is thrown into a maelstrom of intrigue involving a crooked gambler (Morris Carnovsky) and a complex blackmailing scheme.
