As with his epic documentary Hoop Dreams, Steve James's dramatized biopic transcends sports to tell the inspiring true story of the surprising friendship that developed between boxers Joe Louis (Leonard Roberts) and Max Schmeling (Til Schweiger). When these two opponents met in the ring for their epic heavyweight championship bouts in the 1930s, they carried their respective worlds on their shoulders. Louis not only represented the hopes and dreams of the black community, but also "the flag of America and democracy." Nazi Germany's propaganda machine hyped Schmeling as the embodiment of "the master race," although Schmeling, whose story carries more dramatic punch, disassociated himself from Hitler. "I'm not a Nazi," he proclaimed. "I'm just a fighter." Joe and Max takes some hits with its often ham-handed script, but it's got great performances in its corner that should make it a contender for audiences beyond fight fans. --Donald Liebenson

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Apollo 13 is a gripping tale of moon travel.......2007-05-19

I remember seeing this movie in the theater, and it was awesome. It still is, on DVD. The astronauts almost didn't make it back. One of the top ten movies ever made.

The extras are nice, if you have the time. Together they take at least a couple of hours.

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-05-07

I had to replace my original Apollo 13 DVD which, after several successful playings, started to fail to "play back." Possibly, this failure was exacerbated by my attempted "fix" which was to clean the business side of the DVD with an (electronic grade) 99% alcohol cleaning solution.

At any rate, I am happy to have the new disk.

(Of the many [more than 100] DVDs I have, this is the only instance of media failure I have experienced.)

3 out of 5 stars Keep It Honest !.......2007-04-29

Good movie of a great human adventure, well acted and professionally filmed.
Looks a bit stiff and un-imaginative in the developpement of the "story" but overall a very fine visualisation of this tragic-heroic piece of American history.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good about this movie!.......2007-04-12

There were a few "hollywood" inaccuracies that bothered me. For example, it was Meniere's disease, not an ear infection that plagued Al Shepard. Furthermore, it wasn't Menieres that kept him off Apollo 13. It was an administrative decision based on the need to give him and his rookie crew more time to train.

Other than those minor nitpicks, I REALLY enjoyed this film. I didn't obsess over the missed details, mind you. This is, after all, a hollywood adaptation of Jim Lovell's recounting. Facts are going to be skewed a bit here and there. As entertainment value goes, it was wonderful! Suspenseful, emotional and, all-in-all, pretty close to the reality of the situation.

As historical movies go, it actually wasn't too bad on accuracy. And what it lacked in accuracy, it more than made up for in sheer entertainment value.

Jim Lovell's cameo in the end was the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars well told technically accurate film.......2007-02-28

I first saw this film at the cinemas back in 1995 and have seen it countless times since then. I have always been a space enthusiast and remember reading books about astronauts and the Saturn V rocket as a kid. This film is probably the most technically accurate spaceflight film out there. I love how all the zero G scenes are real (filmed in KC-135 aircraft) and all of the switches, lights etc. in the Command module are 100% realistic. The Saturn V liftoff was incredible. This film is still as exciting to watch today as it was back when it came out.

Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-11-10

This movie is great - I wish a sequel had been made, as was originally planned. It would have been nice if the DVD had been anamorphic, but otherwise it is a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Great for me!.......2006-11-05

I always liked this movie, a simple idea with a great out come. A good story of good verses evil, with a cool strap on rocket. Now i get to enjoy this movie when ever i please.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific entertainment.......2006-08-23

(4.5/5 stars) This is a fantasy film set during World War II, with the Nazis chasing jet-propelled backpack technology that will enable their airmen to land in enemy territory. There is even a mock Nazi propaganda film to illustrate the awesome power of this new weapon. In fact, the film really blurs fantasy with reality, with appearances by W.C. Fields and Cab Calloway, among others. Timothy Dalton plays Neville Sinclair, an actor whose life bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Errol Flynn's. Fiction mixed with reality can be amusing because it offers an imaginative alternative to straight fiction and non-fiction. On the other hand, "The Da Vinci Code," "JFK" and the current Bush administration have all proven mixing fantasy and reality can produce downright ugly results. There is some very good action as The Rocketeer, played by the dashing and handsome Bill Campbell, eludes the Nazis and attempts to foil their plot. Jennifer Connelly is radiant as his love interest, Jenny Blake. This is the type of movie where gray areas do not exist; everything is either black or white, good or bad. Along with excellent sets, wardrobes, styles, etc., this aids the film in establishing its nostalgic, 1940s feel. This is a very fun movie for most of the family. Even though there is little objectionable material, some themes might be better suited for ages ten and up.

2 out of 5 stars Corny, clunky, a deserved turkey of the early 90s........2006-07-15

The Rocketeer is the cinematic version of all the faux-Deco buildings that have been erected in recent years around Los Angeles, particularly the Miracle Mile area. It's wafer-thin nostalgia masks a chintzy story that can't stand on its own two feet.

The plotting of The Rocketeer is sound enough for adolescent fare. Unfortunately, the characters are totally uninspired and the dialogue atrocious. Worse still is the execution of the material. Every actor is miscast and thoroughly lacking in charisma. Bill Campbell -- ever hear of him anymore? He overacts every single scene. Timothy Dalton? Hammy. Jennifer Connelly is the only one to come out unscathed.

The direction is beyond weak. When The Rocketeer appears at the nightclub it is so poorly staged, so cloyingly "goofy" that it extinguishes the promise of anything remotely thrilling from happening. Add to this foul mixture a horrendous James Horner score... you get the idea. Still, some nice set design and an effective animated film-within-a-film make for a couple high points.

4 out of 5 stars In many ways, what "Raiders" should have been..........2006-07-14

There's a great deal more attention to period detail in "The Rocketeer" -- the clothing, hair styles on men, even the language used, all are more reminiscent of 1930's serials than anything Spielberg did. Not an indictment of Spielberg's work, just a partial explanation for why I enjoyed "The Rocketeer" so much. It's a love letter to Hollywood and to early aviation, and if you actually know a little about these two subjects the movie makes a lot more sense.

One reviewer stated he found the concept of Nazi spies and soldiers in Hollywood hard to believe -- yet the German Abwehr did drop several spies by parachute into the West country of England. All were ill-prepared and captured almost immediately, but clearly the idea was out there. As for soldiers, note that the Hindenberg carried Nazi soldiers regularly, and in 1938 we weren't at war.

The same reviewer also found the giant assassin unbelievable, but this movie _is_ a fantasy, after all, and the character is clearly based not only on the appearance of the real 1930's and 40's actor Rondo Hatton, but on the kind of character he frequently portrayed.

The movie also gets props for using Howard Hughes as a central character, and not only a Zeppelin, but an autogyro as well, in the climactic scenes!

Steve Zaillian, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Schindler's List, made his directorial debut with this critically acclaimed but little-seen drama based on the nonfiction book by Fred Waitzkin, about a father (Joe Mantegna) who discovers that his seven-year-old son (Max Pomeranc) is a genius at playing chess. The boy plays chess for fun, but when he's tutored by a former champion (Ben Kingsley) and entered into high-pressure competitions, an enjoyable pastime becomes a source of tension and resentment, forcing the father to reconsider his parental priorities. A poignant study of the difference between parental idealism and proper parenting, the movie is also an observantly witty portrait of a precocious child who is still, after all, a child, and still eager for the joyful discoveries of youth. While offering a fascinating look into the world of competitive chess, the movie's dramatically engrossing and extremely well-acted by a brilliant cast that also includes David Paymer, William H. Macy, and Dan Hedaya in memorable supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great film for the achives of any home library. good values and lessons........2007-06-21

As one reviewer who happened to winess much of this first hand has pointed out, yeah, hollywood may have taken some liberties with the characters for theatrics, but hopefully overall the message is transmitted, Winning is not everything, and more training and isolation on one task does not alway make a better player. Other factors come into play, heart and feeling should also. Based on a true story, Josh, a seven year old, picks up chess from the park (washington square) near his home, on his own. To the suprise of his parents, one day he asks to play at the park, and does well for the first time. From their, his father becomes involved, who is at first amazed at his son being so good, but then turns into an the classic Overbearing pressuring parent pushing josh into "always winning". Along the way young josh stuggles with what to do, fearing dissapointing his dad, as well as feeling forced to change his approch to something that brings him no joy. Alas, can Josh ever find his way, what will his dad do if he looses, and will he really be the next bobby fisher? Great movie, decent for the family and discussion.

3 out of 5 stars I Was There.......2007-06-10

I am longtime chess player who also grew up playing chess in the New York chess scene of the 70"s (as a youth). I grew up playing in the streets of the "Time Square" area. A black chess hustler by the name of Bobby Dee originated setting up chess tables on the streets. Players would man the tables and challenge bystanders to a game. He set-up outside of Nathan's on 42nd street. He started this because he had been kicked out of the 42nd street Chess House. This was the 1st time I met "Vinny" (played by a miscasted Laurence Fishburne in the film). His name was Vincent Livermore and he was a preppie type. They all called him Livermore. He didn't have a bald head (in fact his hair was always neatly cut), and he always gave me the impression that he had just come from class. Asa Hoffman (a white chess hustle miscasted in the film} was a highly respected master who was not the neurotic type portrayed in the film, but an accomplished master full of confidence. He always stayed upstairs in the chess house because he had regular customers coming by. Charley (who was Bobby Dee's brother-in-law) worked in the area; and after work he also set up a single board in front of the building where he work (where the New Years Day ball comes down). When Bobby Dee died of aids,(being very popular with hookers from 8th ave.), another Bobby (called sweetpea) started setting up. The police never bothered Bobby Dee (as he was a well-known exboxer, and they knew him at the precinct). After awhile Nathan's complained and Sweetpea mover around the corner to the outside of Bryant Park. Those that set up (now) inside the park came much later and charged much more money to play. Sweetpea continued to charged what Bobbie Dee had charged for the house (fifty cent for each 5 -15 min. game, and a dollar for slow games). What ever money you played for was between you and the play. The flee market started setting up outside of Bryant Park also. The chess playeers started getting harassed by the cops. Two of the one's playing for Sweetpea (a white fellow name Doug and another fellow) decided to set up in the Wall Street area. It was the other fellow's idea (a black guy whose name I've forgotten). Sweetpea gave it up after awhle and started playing in Washington Square Park where "Vinny", and other chess hustlers made their headquarters. "Vinny" was very popular, and white kids from the area got to be good friends with him. He was a preppie with character (who could also be intimidating when playing masters or grandmasters). It was well-known that he was gay. He wasn't flamboyant (and no one ever brought it up), but he never hid the fact either. He was openly gay in an environment where the issue only came up during his absence. That's some of the histoy of the otherside of chess. As for the movie; it's very good otherwise. I've given you a view from the inside out. "Vinny" later died of aids, but Sweetpea was still there, the last time I looked. You see him in some of the park scenes (they use the park guys in the film). The Russian master in the park who talks to himself (who Josh's mother pays a sum of money to play her son a game) was at some point taken to a care facility by some of the neightbors of the park. In those days it was only beginning to look depressing (that's why I stop going there to play). You can sight Sweetpea in the following park scene. Josh is playing "Vinny" on one board while Sweetpea (in a blue sweater with light blue shirt collar) plays a white guy (in black leather coat). Vinny is talking loud while playing Josh. He saids "That's what I'm talking about...Make him run. What can I do...? By the way the guy who saids "A young fischer." is none other than Josh's real life chess teacher Bruce Pandolfini making this comment to Ben Kingsley (who is portraying him in the film). Enjoy.

This HBO documentary is based on a highly original idea: tell the story of baseball from the Great Depression era through the late 1950s using footage from home-movie cameras shot by fans and players. The result is a marvelous look at baseball in America as seen from the ground--the culture of stadiums, the ritual of afternoon games, the spiritually sustaining rivalries. Among the truly unexpected sights is color footage of the 1938 World Series, not only from inside the stadium walls but from the street as traffic cops, crowds, and vehicles amassed. It also covers World War II's impact on the game, and, of course, the heroes, often caught in relaxed, unselfconscious moments.

Arguably more defined and even more lyrical than its predecessor, When It Was a Game 2 moves from a general celebration of baseball culture in America to a specific focus on various facets of the game's history, including the special relationship between game announcers and fans and the farm-team system during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Brooklyn's assimilation of the Dodgers into their community identity is covered quite winningly as is the heartbreak of the team's desertion to California. Last, the film takes us on a tour of some of the game's legends and presents a touching tribute to the extraordinary Babe Ruth. --Tom Keogh

When It Was a Game 3 focuses on the 1960s, a time of change for all of America. Through sharp, incredibly clear color footage of players and fans, the film shows how Major League Baseball slowly but surely evolved from pure sport to moneymaking entertainment. Covering the mighty Yankees, the western expansion of both leagues, the increasing inclusion of black players, and the rise of free agency and increased salaries, the film shows the growth of baseball from adolescence to adulthood. --Rob Lightner

Even people habitually hostile to John Wayne movies tend to cast an indulgent eye on this rumbustious comedy-Western--partly because the Alaska gold rush setting seems more exotic than, say, Texas or Arizona, and because there are no Indians to discriminate against and no macho gunplay to fret about. As for John Wayne as all-purpose icon of male chauvinism, Big Sam McCord (the Duke) spends much of North to Alaska in a state of growing discombobulation because he has fallen in love with, and is thoroughly flummoxed by, "Angel" (Capucine), the woman he's brought back from Seattle to marry his heartsick partner George (Stewart Granger). Henry Hathaway directs in a broader vein than usual, but he hits pay dirt. Even Fabian, the latest pop music idol to be dragooned into supporting the elder roughnecks, is fun, and Ernie Kovacs is droll casting as chief "villain." --Richard T. Jameson

      Description

John Wayne and Stewart Granger strike it rich in this sprawling, brawling comedy-adventure set in the rowdy heydey of the Alaskan gold rush. When prospectors Sam McCord (Wayne) and George Pratt (Granger) finally hit the mother lode, George asks Sam to go to Seattle and fetch his sweetheart, Jennie, but she's already married someone else. Heartbroken for his buddy's sake, Sam visits a saloon, meets dancer (Capucine) and invites her back to Nome as Jennie's replacement - the plan goes perfectly until Sam falls in love with her too!

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs in Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. --David Kronke

Toy Soldiers is a slick dose of high-concept absurdity, and lots of fun if you don't think about it afterward. Adapted from a novel by William P. Kennedy, it's got the swift momentum that's a specialty of screenwriter David Koepp, whose later credits include Jurassic Park and Spider-Man. Matching Koepp's narrative energy is director and cowriter Daniel Petrie Jr., who wrote Beverly Hills Cop, and whose big-screen career stalled after this crowd-pleasing debut. The hokey plot involves a class of prep-school misfits (led by Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton) who use their rebellious ingenuity to foil Colombian terrorists who've taken over their school. The lead villain (Andrew Divoff) demands the return of his extradited drug-lord father (one of the prep students is the residing judge's son), and the inevitable showdown provides a heady mix of nonsense, graphic violence, and military muscle. It shouldn't work but it does, especially if you've got a tolerance for Die Hard clones that barely pass inspection. --Jeff Shannon

This savvy Disney hit from 1969 made a star of a Volkswagen precisely when the car was becoming more popular than ever. Dean Jones and Michele Lee head the cast in a story about a VW bug with a mind of its own. Disney point man Robert Stevenson, director of The Absent-Minded Professor, Mary Poppins, and lots of other Disney live-action hits, makes the slapstick work perfectly and keeps the laughs coming. Buddy Hackett is very funny in a supporting role.

The first sequel, Herbie Rides Again (1974), is similar enough to the first film's charm and raucous comedy that it works on its own. Neither Dean Jones nor Michelle Lee are back, but a nice cast of familiar pros (including Disney vet Ken Berry) keeps things moving along slickly. The story finds Herbie helping Helen Hayes--yes, the First Lady of the American Theater--keep out of the clutches of Keenan Wynn's villain.

Dean Jones came back to the fold for this third lap around the block, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977), which finds him racing in the famed city while thieves plant a stolen diamond in Herbie's gas tank. The plot is forced and conventional, but the cast is the thing: the excitable Don Knotts (The Apple Dumpling Gang) and the tormentable Roy Kinnear (Mr. Salt from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) are good men to have in a potboiler such as this.

The fourth movie, Herbie Goes Bananas (1980), is a wooden story about Herbie's funny adventures heading toward a race in Brazil. Charles Martin Smith and Steven W. Burns try hard to bring some life into this project, but it just doesn't happen. There is one good laugh in the whole thing, in a scene where Herbie becomes a matador. Otherwise, even the picturesque, south-of-the-border stuff doesn't help. Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman star. --Tom Keogh

Cybill Shepherd plays a pregnant woman whose husband is killed before their baby is born; once he gets to heaven, he begs for a chance to come back to her and his unborn child. The twist is that he returns in the form of Robert Downey Jr., boyfriend to Cybill's daughter (Mary Stuart Masterson). When the daughter brings him home from college, he gets his memory back--and starts coming on to her mom. Sounds like a Jerry Springer show--"Help! My dad has been reincarnated as my boyfriend!"--but this Emile Ardolino film actually has a passable amount of charm and wit, once it gets into gear. It gives you a sense of just how funny and charming Downey can be, given the right material. --Marshall Fine

--Tom Keogh
