The chemistry between Leonor Varela, who stars as the bewitching queen Cleopatra, and Billy Zane, as the steadfast Marc Antony, is undeniable. Their love scene is one of the steamiest to hit network television. However, once you move beyond this couple's sexual energy, the movie tends to droop, leaning toward the lackluster.
The tale of Cleopatra has hit the screen in many guises, but none have succeeded as well as Cecil B. DeMille's 1934 film. Here, director Franc Roddam tries once again to tell the story of the exotic queen who won the hearts of both Julius Caesar (Timothy Dalton) and Antony, while reigning over a troubled country. But how do you tell such an epic in a mere 140 minutes? Obviously, much is left out, making this film more worthwhile as a pleasant diversion than a real history lesson. The sets are quite remarkable for a TV movie, but unfortunately, the acting and dialogue leave something to be desired. Cleopatra comes across as a bratty child rather than an intelligent and manipulative seductress. Surely this tremendous queen had more going on in her life than her romances with Romans, but you wouldn't know it from this movie. Zane is the best part of the film, although his constant do-good boyishness can grate. Dalton is adequate as Caesar, although he seems to have a hard time taking the role seriously. Yet, for all its flaws, the action moves swiftly and while the battle scenes may leave you cringing with embarrassment for the director, the rest of this carefully staged piece is beautiful to look at. If you really want to know about the Queen of the Nile, though, you may be better off with A&E's Biography: Cleopatra or the Intimate Portrait: Cleopatra. --Jenny Brown

Description
Few comedians can stir up controversy like the legendary Paul Mooney -- writer for Richard Pryor, creator of In Living Color's Homey the Clown and featured guest on Chappelle's Show. With his characteristic brutal honesty, Mooney passionately and hysterically charges into the electrified currents of racial tension. In this magnificent standup performance at Hollywood's Laugh Factory, Mooney earns a standing ovation with his relentless no-holds-barred observations on black history, stereotypes and prejudices, living in White America, celebrity divas and much, much more!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Comedic Experience! Paul Mooney is TIMELESS!!!.......2007-05-20
This is Hillarious!!!! Paul Mooney is in his classic form and definitely doesnt dissapoint in this funny film!!
And yes Jesus was of Black African descent and so was Cleopatra. She was mixed but definitely of DIRECT Black African descent.
Know your history!!
This is Hilarious!.......2007-04-25
Paul Mooney is the best. Know your History is nothing short of amazing! He talks about racial issues and is dead on.
Great for Laughs and the honest truth.......2007-04-13
Paul Mooney. Very funny and at the same time will tell it like it is. I enjoyed this DVD. He not only did a little stand up, but you were able to hear other comedians (Sandra Burnheard, David Allen Grier to name a few)give you their experience working with Mooney himself.
I do know this....if you are easily offended and do not want to get into religion and the politics....this DVD is not for you. He's going to speak his mind and whether you agree w/ what he's saying or not, you have to admit a lot of it makes sense in the logical world.
Don't take my word for it, but this was a good buy (hella cheap for the goodness on this DVD) and watch it with an open mind and TALK after the DVD is over. That's the goal to getting every one together....communication.
1st Amendment Brilliance! .......2007-04-08
Here, one of this countries greatest unsung comedian/writer/socially and politically conscious commentators, shows us the vast perspective that is uniquely Paul Mooney. Bold, unapologetic, wickedly humorous and intellegently delivered, this is the definitive Mooney which shows the comedic genious at his candid best. Don't be alarmed, this is not simple militantcy, but brazen, in your face, un-compromising honesty and humor! Whether you agree with the views of Paul Mooney or not, this particular dvd showcases the pioneering talent that is typical of today's black comic,un-flinching and harsh, but oh so funny as hell. Make no mistake about it, this is not your grandfather's comedy....and Paul Mooney along with his friend Richard Pryor, helped to open the very doors that made this possible. For those of you searching for that 1 dvd typical of Paul at his unapologetic best, this is the one.
Paul is Paul.......2007-04-06
If you know who he is then you know what he does. This was funny as hell.

Amazon.com essential video
This 1963 extravaganza, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, is certainly an epic historical drama with all the elements: elaborate sets, intricate costuming, name actors, a factual basis, and an overlong script (just over four hours). But the acting is well performed and the backdrops are lush, making this a film worth seeing. Elizabeth Taylor is Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen who seduces Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) in a political move to hold onto her empire. When Caesar is killed in the Roman Senate, Cleopatra looks to Marc Antony (Richard Burton) for his support, practically enslaving him with her wiles. Taylor is dramatic in her role, at times overly serious, but stunning nonetheless as the woman described as "well versed in the natural sciences and mathematics. She speaks seven languages proficiently. Were she not a woman one would consider her to be an intellectual." While the film does seem to drag at moments, it deserves the four Oscars it won for cinematography, art direction-set direction, costumes, and special effects. Don't confuse this Cleopatra with the 1934 version directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Claudette Colbert. --Jenny Brown
Description
Richard Burton, Rex Harrison and Elizabeth Taylor star in one of the greatest screen spectacles ever made - the story of the Queen of the Nile and her love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The film is distinguished by superb performances from Burton and Harrison (nominated for an Oscar), but at its center is Elizabeth Taylor in one of the most glamorous roles of her career. Astounding in scope and grandeur, the picture won Oscars for cinematography, sets and special effects. It's famous moments include moviedom's most flamboyant entrance - Cleopatra's dazzling arrival in Rome. Bolstered by a talented supporting cast and utterly stunning backdrops, here is a truly epic portrayal of the woman who conquered two of Rome's greatest soldiers, affected the course of history, and became synonymous with beguiling beauty - Cleopatra.

Cleopatra DVD Version.......2007-06-12
I would really LOVE a full-screen version of this DVD. In fact I would really prefer all my DVD movies in full-screen. I won't be buying anymore wide-screen versions in future, because even though I own a wide-screen TV, full-screen versions look a whole lot better on it as far as I'm concerned.
A couple of movies I own come with double-sided discs, with a wide-screen version on one side and a full-screen version on the other. 'Forbidden Planet' and 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' are two titles that come to mind which are sold this way.
Surely this is the way to go!
A Spectacle that Time has Favored........2007-06-10
I can remember as a 19 year old in the early 1960's all of the media frenzy involving the making of this film and it's two principle players: Taylor and Burton. They were household words and having one of their countless affairs, off and on again. If my memory serves me, lovely Liz was still married to Eddie Fisher (in name only) and nearly died during the filming of "Cleopatra." No film since "Gone With the Wind" drew more public attention and the expectations were just too high when finally released. The critical reviews were mostly negative, dwelling more on the troubled making of the film, rather that the film itself. This surely affected the public at the box office, and it was far from a smash hit.
But this film is a legend and a real "gem" that time has favored over the years. It is well-crafted by the great Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and takes it's place with the great epics of movie history like: "Ben Hur, "Spartacus," and "Quo Vadis." This is one of Mankiewicz"s better films, his second effort at a Roman theme since filming Brando in "Julius Ceasar" in 1953. Our fascination with Roman history continues to this day with the brilliant HBO series: "Rome."
Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz is one of those greats of movie history, both as a director and screenwriter. A collection of his films is essential to any real film collection. I got hooked on Mankiewicz after seeing "A Letter to Three Wives" for the first time. His films are a proud part of my film collection, and "Clepatra" is one of my favorites.
Absolutely Fantastic.......2007-05-12
I have enjoyed this movie for many years and still do. In my opinion I believe that Elizabeth Taylor is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen and wonderful actress. It is a great movie and I have watched it many times and will again.
Cleopatra not Shakespeare.......2007-05-07
The film is a true spectacle. More beautiful than beautifully acted, in my opinion. Elizabeth Taylor gives a modern day twist to the character of Cleopatra, with her sly winks and smiles, she seems to be more down to earth and blatatantly flirty than one would expect a monarch to be. The sets are fantastic, also the acting of the two male leads. I had hoped that this film would follow the Shakespeare play, Antony and Cleopatra, but it is nothing like the play.
A Gutted Queen Still Shimmers.......2007-04-23
CLEOPATRA was originally planned as a 2 part separate release. The 1st part was to be "Caesar & Cleopatra" and the second "Anthony & Cleaopatra." Each was to run appx. 4 hrs. The problems on the set (and off) are well known. Elizabeth Taylor only agreed to do the role for a then staggering one million $$$. That was just the beginning of a financial nightmare for the studio. The film was drastically cut to fit into a single release. It's reported that Taylor ran out of the first screening in tears, denouncing the film, claiming that the most pivotal scenes that delineated the depth of Cleopatra's character had been deleted. What was left was a superficial interpretation of a formidable woman & leader. At times Taylor's Cleopatra comes off more as a petulant sex kitten than the last great Pharoh of Egypt. Richard Burton's tendency for ham acting & bloated appearance didn't help.
So why see the film?
Well, there's Elizabeth Taylor's famous beauty--and it dazzles in this movie. Her make-up and hairstyles set new trends in the fashion industry. Edith Head's costume design is absolutely goregeous. Alex North's fantastic soundtrack is one of the very best. The set design is oddly abstract at times, but it works. The "spectacle" scenes are great. Cleopatra's entrance into Rome is a real jaw-droper, a delicious display of creative opulence, replete with half-naked native girls dancing to wild African music, multicolored incense smoke scattered into the spectators by exotic medicine men, whirling dervishes and a pyramid containing doves released in front of the assembled Roman Senators & their rather annoyed & envious wives (it's very funny.) This way beyond ostentatious display of art & power concludes with Taylor seated on a gold throne atop a gigantic golden sphinx (we're talking the equivalent of 3-5 stories tall), wearing a gown of pure gold feathers, with a solid gold crown three feet high stately adorning Taylor's coal black curls. (Claudette Colbert, eat your heart out!)
Unfortunately the spectacle ends with Cleopatra's golden barge sailing into a harbor in such splendor that the superstitious townfolk think it is Aphrodite herself come to meet Bacchus in the form of Marc Anthony. This scene was originally meant the be the beginning of the next sequel, but as it stands it is stangely brief and seems almost out of synch. This last half of the now truncated film fizzles out & is downright boring compared to the first half.
All this being said, if you've never seen the movie--you've got to. It represents the end of the spectacle film era--it's just too darn expensive. CLEOPATRA also represents a real event in 1960's culture.

For Insomniacs, A Rainy Day Off From Work or Timothy Dalton Fans.......2007-07-02
The 2 stars are for Timothy Dalton. Honestly, he was the only reason I was able to watch this film. Pure eye candy. As a chick flick, the film failed even in terms of wardrobe. What was with the ugly serpent headpiece Cleo wore through the film? The actress playing Cleopatra portrayed her not as a queen of a nation, but a rich girl with nothing to do but make trouble for family members and sleep around with important men. The worst scene is when Cleo actually asks Ceasar "Do you love me?" I expected her to start doing his laundry or making meals for him in the next scene. The other members of the royal family were equally laughable, especially the rotund general/advisor of brother Ptolomey. Please do not spend any money on this film. The writers are truly the culprits of this film. Wait until a baseball game gets rained out and the film gets scheduled as a filler. Unless, of course, you simply can not get enough of Timothy Dalton.
Historically inaccurate and exaggerated.......2007-07-02
I find it funny how this movie tries to make cleo patra into a superwomen type leader. Are we supposed to believe that Cleopatra with her small female frame who never lifted a finger to do anything consisting of labor can out dual and kill trained roman soldiers as what was shown in this movie.. Aside from that the other rediculous portrayal was not correctly pointing out that she had 2-3 kids with Marc Antony. Neither did they accurately portray that Octavian did kill Ceasarian but, instead we are lead to believe that he was given safe passage to india to one day return as a ruler of egypt and reinstate Cleo's legacy.
The main inaccuracy of this movie was to imply cleopatra had egyptian ancestory. The truth is that she was of Greek Ancestory. Her family which included her fathers Ptolemy's lineage were part Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt. Hence the name of the city of Alexandria where Cleo resided.
In spite of this, the movie is entertaining. The wardrobe of the romans and egyptians looks real and the scale of the buildings look authentic.. The ships and some of the background scenaries such asn the sphinx however look fake which taints the visual quality of this film.
I'm a sucker for historical epic's so I will give it 3 stars. It wasnt terrible but, I expected a lot more from elizabeth taylor's cleo patra remake.
Overblown Dialog Spoils Much.......2007-01-04
I got this DVD as part of a set of Hallmark mini-series and hoped it would be as good as some of the others. The other mini-series were fantasy-based so unrealistic dialog worked just fine in them but this one was full of overly theatrical and unrealistic assertions which not only ruined the story by robbing it of any depth but also made it very difficult for the actors to perform well. After all, it's hard to credibly deliver one sweeping statement after another with little in between to connect those statements or build relationships to the point where they make sense.
I think the writers (perhaps properly) assumed viewers were familiar with the basic characters so they just skipped character development and went straight to having the characters speak in a macro fashion. This was a mistake and the entire miniseries suffers for it.
Timothy Dalton seems to give it his all despite poor material and Billy Zane either by virtue of his character or adequate acting chops does alright. Leonor Varela, unfortunately, is simply not up to the task of playing Cleopatra as she deserves to be portrayed. While waiting for Caesar, she seems to be waiting anxiously for her prom date to show up. In her scenes with Dalton, she seems to be acting in love rather than coming across as actually in love with him. She does look great though and can wear the revealing costumes well.
I wouldn't have bought this DVD on its own and I'm uncertain if I'll watch it again. I like mini-series in general and many of the Hallmark productions specifically but I'm afraid I can't recommend this one.
Cleopatra.......2006-09-06
I thought this movie was so wonderful, I just love everything about cleopatra and egypt! I have the movie on vhs and i just ordered the dvd! You will just love this movie and be truly amazed at how beautiful cleopatra(Leonor Varela) looks in this movie.
Excellent Remake Of The 1960 Movie. Recommended For Those Who Prefer The Short (Psuedo) History Version Of "Cleopatra.".......2006-09-06
Franc Roddam's 1999 telefilm "CLEOPATRA" isn't so much a remake of the classic 1963 epic film starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison. Though I enjoy the 3 hour 22 minute spectacle, I think that this version is the DEFINITIVE version of the story, though there are some historical errors (which I won't attempt to discuss; if you want history, you'd better stick with the 1963 movie). Too bad the producers decided to make it as a straight-to-video film. The acting, especially from the three leads (Billy Zane as Mark Antony, Timothy Dalton as Julius Caesar and newcomer Leonor Varela as Cleopatra) is strong. I've seen the two male leads in other films, so I knew this one would be worth viewing. Ms. Varela is drop-dead gorgeous. This film is Not Rated.

an enigmatic, disturbing film.......2007-06-17
This film is a mixed of realism and myth. There are hints of Daphnis and Chloe, but this is not their story at all.
A naive and good young boy (played by a blonde boy of about eleven) travels with a group of sheepherders. At one of their stops, he wanders off and finds a mysterious young girl of about 13 or 14. He falls in love with her, but she plays hard to get and sets tasks for him to do in order to win her. At one point, she teases him wearing a loose garment off one shoulder. There are several shots in which her young breasts are visible, but the twilight is dim. At the end (spoiler coming), an older boy of his group sees the girl, throws her to the ground and rapes her. She screams and resists at first, then throws herself into it. The boy is totally disallusioned, and we see him walking off into the sea dragging the albatross that has been a bond between him and the girl throughout the movie.
That's really it. You make of it what you will, but few people will be able to watch this movie and not have strong mixed feelings of one kind or another.

don't buy this dvd. i have listened to and own alot of concert dvds this is buy far the worst sounding dvd you will hear. with all the technology out there this dvd sounds like this that is not right. don't buy this dvd it is a waste of money.
Needs work.......2007-06-18
First things first---a quick check on the band's own website has no mention of this DVD and I think I know why---most likely, the label that issued it (Cleopatra) is not the label Great White is currently affiliated with (Shrapnel). This is probably a "cash in" on the fact that Great White is doing a reunion tour and has a new album coming out so I doubt this has been endorsed by the band, regardless of what the liner notes say. Much like the recent Stephen Pearcy and L.A. Guns DVDs, this one sort of misses the mark. Since no other footage is currently available, you can argue that it is nice to have for that, but the footage itself leaves a bit to be desired. It's certainly live and raw and while I don't want a hard rock band to be all polished up in the studio, this could have stood some sprucing up. It's more bootleg footage than an actual commercial release. It's not unwatchable, but it is lacking in quality somewhat, so just be forewarned that it is not some pristine high def DVD.

Easy on the eyes, and a ton of fun... well-done.......2007-02-10
Gotta love this sci-fi tv series with 3 female leads wearing leather hip boots in a post-apocalyptic future where they live underground as freedom fighters in a planet ruled by machines. Classic b-tv stuff.
Lots of fun, if you like series like Lexx and Farscape and Firefly and "Jack of All Trades" and Hercules/Xena, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century etc, you'll likely enjoy this too.
I almost didn't buy it, but I'm glad I did; watched most eps in a marathon 2-3 week session, it's compelling, interesting once you get into it. I liked the strength of the female lead's characters, and the energy/pacing of the series, it's a "action fighter of the minute" type high energy series; definitely a must for b-movie sci-fi fans.
Nice set design/costuming/special fx and more. Good series, worth a watch.

The Perfect Show for Pizza Night!.......2007-02-02
This is a great show! Three beautiful women fighting evil robots and clowns? You can't get much better! The dialog is corny and the situations are unrealistic; but the interaction among characters is excellent! Sit back and enjoy!
The DVD set is just as great as the show. You get a blooper real (showcasing how much fun the actors had with one another), an episode of Earth 2 (which really isn't very good), and others!
If you enjoy mindless action shows, pick up Cleopatra 2525!
This show is great Sci -Fi fun!.......2007-01-14
After they took Hercules off this show was one of the fillers.
I do agree they really should have given it a full hour. It might have made
it as a prime time show. I think Gina Torres, Jenifer sky, and Victoria
Pratt rock in this show. I am really glad somebody put this to Dvd.
I am glad I own it and I know I will enjoy it for years to come.
If you are looking for some campy Sci- fi fun check this out.
You will be glad you did.
Too many bad reviews.......2006-11-07
If you study egyptology at all, there's more here than meets the eye! Cleo is the best; her weapon is her heart...
It's like they reached down into my subconcious.......2006-10-14
It's like the producers reached down into my subconscious to make this show irresistibile. The trio starring in this sci-fi adventure consists of the cute, nurturing, feminine, Cleo of the name of the series; Helen, the street smart black chick leading the pack; and Sarge, the muscular fight'n chick. They often complained about looking for men with nothing but robot eunuchs to be found... Every red-blooded heterosexual male watching it must have just known they had a chance if only they could step into the screen to save them. You know that was the fantasy.
It's a veritable smorgasboard of woman-candy.
The stories are not Shakespeare, but I think they are a little underrated. The background is that Cleo wakes up from suspended animated in a future where humans and mutants live far underground while alien-robots rule the surface. Technology above and below is advanced. The girls are part of a network that is trying to preserve humanity until they are strong enough to take back the surface.
Yeah, the stories are designed to show off the scantily clad beauties, but so what? It is fairly well acted and the characters are fleshed out enough with that scenario in mind. Much worse has lasted longer on TV. I liked it when it was on (and I think it would have done much better commercially if it had been aired late at night instead of Saturday morn/afternoon) and I am glad it is out on DVD.

Product Description
A buxom beauty, undercover narcotics agent Cleo Jones is the principal operative in a covert scheme to eradicate an international drug trade. But she is pulled away from important business when a phony raid on her boyfriends ghetto halfway house puts the rehabilitation center in jeopardy. Cleo will soon discover the source of her domestic troubles: Mommy, a raunchy underworld eccentric with a collection of Amazonian women as sexual slaves. Former model Tamara Dobson made her feature film debut in this 1970s Blaxploitation cult classic. Title theme song by Joe Simon. Additional music by Carl Brandt and Brad Shapiro

Special agent Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson), six feet two inches of sinewy fighting fury clad in layers of runway chic fashions in bright rainbow colors, strolls up a sand dune and orders the destruction of a Turkish poppy field. Thousands of miles away, an L.A. drug lord named Mommy (Shelley Winters hamming it up with garish wigs and lecherous leers) screeches as her life blood burns away and lures Cleopatra stateside to plot her demise. A product of the "blaxploitation" explosion of low-budget thrillers featuring black heroes in the 1970s, Cleopatra Jones may not be the best of the batch but revels in the most outrageous fashion sense. Cleo looks great in furs, pantsuits, ponchos, turbans--a new outfit every scene--and drives a sleek black Corvette with a personalized license plate: "CLEO." It's a shame that the producers dropped the exotic potential of a globetrotting super-agent for an L.A.-bound gangster film, which is entertaining in a comic-book way but rarely reaches the energetic levels of the gritty Pam Grier action pictures Coffy and Foxy Brown. Bernie Casey is a role model of dignity and action as a neighborhood activist, and a garishly overdressed Antonio Fargas delivers a suitably flamboyant performance as Mommy's pusher Doodlebug. The glamorous super-agent flew off to Hong Kong for the 1975 sequel, Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold. --Sean Axmaker

"Could Have Been Better".......2007-03-28
The movie was okay. If you like movies from the 70's, then this is another flick to add to your collection. Tamara Dobson is definitly
one tough sista.
RIGHT ON! SWEET SISTAH!.......2007-03-05
Simply one of the best, fun and campy, cult films of the 1970's. Even today 2007, this movie is alot of fun. Rest in peace Tamara Dobson, you were and always will be "a whole lotta woman!"
She Isn't Some Lame Wonder Woman.......2007-02-19
As bad as a man as Shaft is, he wouldn't play with Cleopatra Jones if he thought for one minute she was on her last nerve, and it was shredding fast.
Tamara Dobson portrays a special agent who is busting up a drug pipeline from Turkey to the United States that is operated by Mommy (Shelley Winters). I hope I don't ruin the ending for you, but keep in mind the movie isn't titled, Mommy.
I always found the film a parody of James Bond and the other tough white heroes back in the day who would gently set the lady aside before punching out the villains, with the hero capturing her heart in the end. Cleopatra Jones disarms the bad guys with her charm, but is also cooking up some knuckle sandwiches to take them out with when the time is right.
Dobson does a great job in a role that may have been nearly impossible to pull off well. Such over-the-top characters have to be difficult to portray - there is a fine line between acting well or making the character the buffoonish Rambo - but Dobson does a great job.
The DVD cover is a pretty poor updated version to the original artwork. The movie is from 1973, not 2003 and the artwork should make that point.
If you are looking for a movie that packs a punch, run quickly away from the usual suspects and get Cleopatra Jones.
Dreaming Big.......2007-01-12
This film brought back a lot of great memories for me. I enjoyed seeing Tamara Dobson on the screen playing the heroine that all teenage girls of the time enjoyed watching. She was smart, pretty with her own sense of style.
Cleopatra Jones.......2006-12-22
This DVD is awesome!!!
I recommend this DVD to anyone who likes action and 1970s blacksplotation movies. Eventhough this movie came out a few years before I was born, I enjoyed watching every moment of this DVD.

One of Hollywood's greatest showmen gets a worthy showcase in The Cecil B. De Mille Collection, consisting of five of the legendary producer-director's most characteristic films. As noted by David Thomson in his influential book A Biographical Dictionary of Film, "De Mille's movies are barnstormers, rooted in Victorian theatre, shamelessly stereotyped and sentimental, but eagerly courting 20th-century permissiveness, if only solemnly to condemn it." That's an apt description of the films included in this nicely packaged box set, which offers no extras beyond the films themselves. Thomson is equally accurate in calling De Mille's films "simple, raw, pious, and jingoistic," but as these five well-preserved films make abundantly clear, De Mille was always a consummate entertainer. One of Hollywood's foremost pioneers, De Mille cut an iconic figure, single-handedly defining the archetypal image of the dictatorial director, complete with boots, jodhpurs and an ever-present riding crop to enforce his domineering authority. After failed attempts to work independently and, later, for MGM, De Mille found a permanent home at Paramount in 1932, and it's there that he made these five films (now owned by Universal as part of their pre-1948 Paramount library), which represent the glorious clash of Christian virtues, epic-scale production values, lurid sexuality, and self-important grandiosity that make De Mille's films so curiously (and in many cases hypocritically) enthralling.
The Sign of the Cross (1932) is quintessential De Mille, now famous for its pre-Code (i.e. pre-censorship) scene of peep-show nudity as Claudette Colbert (playing Poppaea, wife of Charles Laughton's Roman emperor Nero) takes a tantalizing bath in goat's milk, daring DVD viewers to freeze-frame "the naughty bits" while Roman prefect Marcus (Frederic March) struggles to reconcile his loyalty to Rome with his forbidden love for the Christian maiden Mercia (Elissa Landi), who's destined for the lion's den. Full of outrageous spectacle (including dwarves in the Roman arena), this blood-and-guts epic is pure De Mille compared to the more conventionally formulaic adventure of Four Frightened People (1934), also starring Colbert as one of the four titular characters shipwrecked on a remote Malay island (filmed at Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in Hawaii) and forced to fend for themselves. It's a stodgy but frequently amusing adventure, with Colbert's uptight schoolmarm growing sexier and less inhibited with each passing scene. Colbert returns (De Mille obviously adored her) in the title role of Cleopatra (1934), easily seducing Marc Antony (played by De Mille favorite Henry Wilcoxon) in a film as lavishly appointed as it is melodramatically extreme. Wilcoxon pairs with Loretta Young in The Crusades (1935) with De Mille once again mixing piety with prurience in a religious epic that promises plenty of sex but, in classic De Mille fashion, remains steadfastly chaste. Union Pacific (from Hollywood's golden year of 1939) is a grandly entertaining Western that mangles history (specifically, events surrounding construction of the transcontinental railroad) while casting gunslingers Joel McCrea and Robert Preston in a contest for Barbara Stanwyck's affections.
Choosing a favorite among these five films is purely a matter of personal taste, but for all of his weaknesses as a director (not the least being a condescending and self-righteous arrogance toward his audience), De Mille was never, ever boring. These films helped to make Paramount the most profitable studio of the 1930s, and they hold up remarkably well. Despite the complete absence of bonus features (Universal once again taking the low-cost option with no-frills packaging), each film is presented in pristine or near-pristine condition, ripe for first-time viewing or nostalgic rediscovery by vintage film buffs everywhere.--Jeff Shannon
Description
Legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille earned a place in cinematic history when he helped create Hollywood's first feature-length film, an event that established Hollywood as the motion picture capital of the world. A master of spectacular epics, his films garnered unparalled acclaim for their scope and grandeur. Now, for the first time ever, five of his most popular films are available in one premium DVD collection. Experience the breathtaking dangers and delights of ancient Rome in The Sign of the Cross; trek through a perilous jungle with Four Frightened People; thrill to the passion, suspense and intrigue of Cleopatra; journey back in time with the glorious story of The Crusades; and see how the West was really won in the explosive Union Pacific. With a glamorous roster of screen legends, including Claudette Colbert, Charles Laughton, Barbara Stanwyck, Anthony Quinn and many more, this 5-disc collection is a phenomenal reminder of the innovator who made moviemaking what it is today.

only applies to 2, but watch them all.......2007-06-11
Cleopatra, 1934 - (****) - forget liz & dick! this is the version to see: all the excesses of de mille (how that man could cover up smut with righteousness, lol) and a tour-de-force performance by claudette colbert in the eponymous role, not to mention warren william and de mille stalwart henry wilcoxon as julius caesar and marc antony, both gleefully chewing up the over the top scenery. once you see that barge sequence (what ARE they doing there???) you will never forget it. first rate fun, and until "the ten commandments", arguably the directors best.
The Crusades, 1935 - (***) - henry wilcoxon is a fine richard the lion hearted, and ian keith a fine saladin, in cecil b de milles plea for tolerance. unfortunately, apart from the usual spectacle, the movie falls rather flat, probably victimized by the bland righteousness of leading lady loretta young: surely one of the more deservedly forgotten stars of hollywoods golden era. watch it for the size of the thing, but you might want to have a book handy during the dialogue sequences.
Great Fun from a Master.......2007-03-09
Cecil B. DeMille will never be viewed as a master of cinema along the lines of a John Ford, a Howard Hawkes, an Alfred Hitchcock, or a John Huston. But he did know how to delivery the goods. I do believe that anyone who love movies from the '30's and '40's will enjoy this collection.
For me the highlight of the collection is Claudette Colbert. She is so much fun to watch in both CLEOPATRA and SIGN OF THE CROSS. She is truly magnficent!!! And you can see why she was such a popular star. She may have won her Oscar for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, but her all-knowing performance as Cleopatra probably help cinch the award for her.

most of the movies in this collection where good and one i didn't like at all. it was a romance movie and i don't like those movies. I bought these movies because of the movie Cleopatra but it wasn't the movie i wanted, my mastake. you live and learn form youe mastakes.
Interesting Mix.......2007-01-10
I was never a De Mille fan but purchased this box set for "Union Pacific" (which I feel is his best film) and the restored "The Sign of the Cross" a film which is okay as a whole but very entertaining in certain sections and for Laughton's Nero. I was also impressed with this film's presentation of the Christians going into the arena not with brave smiles on their faces but rather with absolute terror. It's a very moving sequence. "Four Frightened People" is a curio; okay to see once but that's it. "Cleopatra" and "The Crusades" are ponderous and boring. The boxed sets have their downside in that the titles one wants might have to be purchased along with films that wouldn't normally be desired for one's collection. At least the unwanted films, whichever ones they may be for you, don't take up valuable storage space.
DeMille's baths were a very real contribution to the sexuality of the screen..........2006-12-24
Of the many screen incarnations of the romantically foolish, politically shrewd Egyptian queen, this was Cecil B. DeMille's... His Victorian puritan's approach to the sex and scandals surrounding Cleopatra's throne reflected her continuing appeal to the imagination - even if that imagination were really a childhood fantasy of adult desires...
Authenticity, except as decorative embroidery, took second place to his desire to capture her timeless appeal on film... Facts and figures may vary, fashions and desirable objects may be ever changing, but sex, sin and punishment make up a triangle of eternal allure...
Travis Banton's wardrobe transformed Claudette Colbert from a flirtatious star into a splendid, seductive woman with fanciful art direction... The film had the opulence, the barbarity, the epic sweep and shocking decadence of certain books and paintings that were at the heart of so much of this film...
The French-born, American-raised Claudette Colbert made three films with Cecil B. DeMille, but felt more comfortable in contemporary comedies, for one of which, 'It Happened One Night,' she won an Oscar, and in all of which she identified herself with the most American of American secretaries, sweethearts, wives and mothers...
Colbert's popularity lasted well into the fifties... but her magic rests with 'Cleopatra'.

Utter CRAP!!.......2007-07-02
What a stinking disappointment. is this Stephen's attempt to squeeze a little extra money out of his failing career? What a horrible "official" DVD this is. Chessy videos of photos flashing with music playing over top. The Ratt live stuff I have seen on the internet for years in color...looks like they took the computer MPG files and just put it on here, except they distorted it, pinching it, made it black and white, and made it look worse.
The Arcade stuff is good footage, but why cut the songs and only show pieces? There is just little to nothing on here that makes this worth having, in my opinion.
Reminds me of the Mickey Ratt CD I bought earlier this year, with a bonus DVD of Stephen doing nothing but sitting around making stupid comments about nonsense with Ratt songs, and banging away on a guitar. An hour of him sitting there looking sick and mumbling crap. Based on that, I can see where the inspiration came for this DVD.
Horrible or terrible.... two words that sum up this DVD.......2007-06-22
This is without a doubt, the worse DVD I've ever seen.... and I have hundreds in my collection. Had this been whole DVD been included as bonus tracks for a full length concert, then no problem. But this is 31 mins of garbage.
No NO NOOOOO.......2007-06-10
nothing here but photo montages to songs, and not even crisp photos, they've been altered and are black and white. old footage of 'round and round' in 1984 on an LA station, but altered to look bootleg. it goes on and on! even actual concert footage is not good, you'll be watching an Arcade concert and it skips out halfway through the song. btw, who shot the video for 'in like pink' c'mon SEP I could have done soooo much better for you!! just go to youtube and search for ratt, arcade, sep, etc
