5 out of 5 stars The Story of Alcatraz.......2007-01-27

Alcatraz was norotious in its day for being an island prison off the coast of San Francisco Bay. A man who spends a year in solitary confinment goes mad enough to kill a fellow inmate. The sad thing is that the convict was a mere petty thief whose nature only hardened when he was sentenced to imprisonment. Christian Slater plays an ambitious public defender in San Francisco who fights for his client in that Matlock kind of way. One of the best scenes in this film are all the shots of San Francisco which create the atmosphere of the times.

5 out of 5 stars Murder in the first.......2006-11-10

I think that this movie show exactly what is still going on in prisons today. I loved his (Christian Slatter) strenght, and determination to Fight back. It is sad and true, something people should think about, being that there are so many people with mental illness are still being mistreated in the prisons.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie with a Purpose.......2006-05-14

I've been reading some reviews and I've seemed to notice that the only negative comments are not about the movie but people who disagree with the message of the movie. They either critisize it for not coinciding with reality or they disagree with the message that society is at fault. But these are not faults with the movie. The only purpose of a movie of this kind is to portray an idea and provide an argument for their belief. This movie does an amazing job of portraying the idea that sometimes it is worth fighting for something that noone else believes in and that life is valuable and EVERY person has a right to be treated fairly. No, this film does not follow what actually happened 100%, but it doesn't claim to. All it does it tell a story and it does an impecable job of it. The director allows the viewer to get inside the accused's mind as he goes mad and the viewer feels helpless as he watches in horror. This is the real success of the film, to convey the feeling from the accused's point of view so that they can see him as a person for who he is. This is truly one of the best movies I have ever seen, not because it's "cool" or "hip" but because it invokes a passion inside you and by the end of the movie you will feel like you know what it is like to have nothing, have noone, and feel nothing but pain and fear. After that you can derive your own opinions about how you feel on this issue, but at least it will be an educated opinion and you will have been exposed to another point of view.

4 out of 5 stars Massive Dose of Martial Arts Mayhem.......2007-05-06

One of the better live action versions of a Japanese Manga out there. I mean, how can you hate a movie where the antagonist and protagonist are Caucasians with Asian names, and the female love interest is Asian with a Caucasian name?

1 out of 5 stars Dismally Bad Live-Action Version of Popular Japanese Manga Series.......2006-09-26

There was a brief period around 1995-7 when Toei, one of the major film companies in Japan, produced a string of now forgotten films featuring B-list English-speaking actor(s). Those films usually included Japanese actors as part of main cast or supports, and many of them were theatrically released in Japan (though none of them became a commercial hit). Today not many people know such titles as `No Way Back' (featuring then unknown Russell Crowe and Kelly Hu), `Countdown' (with Lori Petty'), `Final Vendetta' (with Brigitte Wilson) and `Crying Freeman' (directed by Christophe Gans). Except for `Crying Freeman' which is a decent action film, they are mostly unremarkable films.

`Fist of the North Star' was made during this period. The big difference is that its post-WWIII story derives from hugely popular Japanese manga series `Fist of the North Star' (`Hokuto no Ken'). Ask any Japanese under 40, and you will realize the popularity of the series. Well, not everyone liked it, but this comic created by Buronson and Tesuo Hara.became popular during the 1980s, and then TV animation version started, which also became a hit.

But this live-action version of `North Star' falls flat completely. It uses the earlier chapters of the original comic as the main story, in which we follow the battles of a stoic fighter named Kenshiro (Gary Daniels) in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world plagued with violence. Blood thirsty gangsters attack the villagers, and they steal and kill mercilessly. It is the world of the second `Mad Max' film (which greatly influenced the original comic), but unlike Mel Gibson's character Kenshiro (whose character is partly based on Bruce Lee) fights the villains with his original kung-fu, which causes the enemy's body explode (yes, literally, like `The `Scanners').

Unfortunately, however, it doesn't happen in this film because it is so CHEAP! The unimaginative production designs are mainly about mud, old factory, and wilderness with green screen behind it. Nothing is thrilling in here - you see hammy Clint Howard playing a despicable baddie with hammy Chris Penn playing another despicable baddie. Japanese actress Isako Washio plays bland Julia, Kenshiro's love, and it is not a good sign when you see Malcolm McDowell sitting like a Buddhist monk.

The story is sometimes hard to follow because of its confusing narrative, and it often goes on and on with talks, talks, and talks. Former kick-boxing champion Gary Daniels can show very good fight scenes, and he surely shows them briefly, but when that happens, the film is almost over.

My advice is again `Stick to the original' or in this case, original Japanese cartoon series. It is not perfect, but it is more exciting and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars gary daniels kick ass.......2006-09-13

this is gary daniels best performance so far, i havent seen or read the cartoon/comics, but this is a good entertainment movie. and the budget issnt that low. watch it, it is a must own

1 out of 5 stars fists will fly, and heads will NOT explode!!!.......2006-07-21

nobody explodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no one! i can't stress that enough. no one suffers the true wrath of the fist of the north star. if you are a fan of the animated series then don't watch this movie. it will only make you hate the person who made it. if you are a fan of martial arts movies, don't watch this movie because it will make you hate all of the actors in this movie. if you are a fan of mullets don't watch this movie because it will forever detract from the joy that courses through your veins everytime you see a remarkable quaff of hockey hair. if you are a fan of cheasy b movies then i also strongly suggest that you do not watch this one because it will make you hate yourself. this movie sucks on levels that you didn't even know existed. it sucks more than going on a blind date with with your mom. it sucks more than watching rosie o'donnell and liza minelli strip down and wrestle in creamed corn and chick peas. worse than a drunk near sighted proctologist with cold hands and long nails. it sucks more than pamela anderson having hep c. or like seeing your grandmother getting out of the shower. like sifting through dog poop looking for worms this movie will leave you feeling like you need a shower. is this movie better than a sharp stick in the eye? no, if somone stabbed you in the eye with any stick while you were watching this movie, then you would thank them for their mercy. save your sanity and do not, under any circumstances, watch this movie. gary daniels sucks and nobody explodes!

1 out of 5 stars Remake is defentaly needed badly!.......2005-08-27

I was excited when this came out in 1995 and saw it in Tokyo. This was my favorite Japanese comic at the time. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst adaptations I could have never imagined. Although there were a few good fight effects, it did not make up for the poor screenwriting and plot. I want to remake this film with a big actor, and all the characters needed. This could be like "Lord of the Rings: Trilogy". The comic is tight, and the story is deep. So please don't watch this film. Read the comic and then let your imagination soar!!!

Description

Erik Larson's bestselling book The Devil in the White City introduced America to one of the most horrific but little-known episodes in our nation's criminal history. When the shocking exploits of the mysterious Dr. H. H. Holmes became known, U.S. tabloids dubbed him the American Jack the Ripper. H.H. HOLMES: AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER is the first film to tell the entire true story of this grisly episode. H.H. HOLMES: AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER focuses on Holmes' entire life of crime and villainy, from childhood to his death sentence and ultimate execution. Original photographs and newspaper reports of the period create a chilling authenticity, while actor Tony Jay (Time Bandits, Disney's Beauty and the Beast) provides spooky, insightful narration to enliven the proceedings.

4 out of 5 stars I wish it was 2 hrs.......2007-05-17

This was full of information. I rented this after having read The Devil In the White City and was hungry for more details about H.H. Holmes and this DVD did fill me in. However, it is almost impossible to adequately do so in such a short amount of time.

More details about finding the Pitezel girls in Canada, the condition of the bodies, etc. since they didn't explain it like they did in one of the books I read which made me despise him even more that he could do that.

I know this is probably ridiculous to ask but a computer generated image of what the castle looked like from the inside to get a better idea of the horrors within.

I know I am sounding like a ghoul, but it is such a unique case. In any event, it was nicely done and worth watching again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Holmes is an intersting character but not the 1st American serial killer.......2007-04-20

That the title states that H.H, Holmes is America's first serial killer indicates the lack of research the film crew did. I have read the H.H. Holmes book and am very familiar with his case. His level of deception and ability to move so fluidly and avoid the law is impressive. His torture chamber is also impressive. He is a Victorian Ted Bundy/Henry Lucas and Charlie Ng to various degrees. His success was based on a common thread to most serial killers- they feast on social upheaval and the subsequent displaced. The rocking 1960's/The Anarchist 70's or the movement of Americans from rural to urban at the turn of the century links all of these killers. Forgotten in the rush to "firstdom" is the Bender family of Cherryvale KS from 1871-1873. The Benders (Mother, Father, son and lovely daughter the spiritualist Kate) lured eleven men to their deaths for primarily economic gain although more ghastly deeds have been ascribed to them). They ran a modest boarding house to supply the western expansion in the post-civil war era. The Benders may not be the first in American history but they predate HH by more than a quarter century. They are unique even by modern standards for the fact that a seemingly cohesive family unit fully participated for an extended period of time. Shades of Sawney Bean in the Flint Hills. They were never caught as the son and Kate went to the Mexican border and Mr./Mrs Bender fled to St. Louis via Kansas City. Additionally the state of Kansas has erected a historical marker directing tourists to the Bender's infamy. I guess if Colorado can have their Donner Party and Missouri can eulogize Jesse James then Kansas can go on their Bender frenzy.

4 out of 5 stars An engrossing docu-film!.......2006-08-04

Being a bit of a "true crime buff," it's always nice to see a well-constructed documentary about the life of a serial killer. Although it's impossible to reveal every little detail in a 60 minute film, writer/director John Borowski jam packs this one with tons of thoroughly-researched information.
Wonderfully narrated by Tony Jay and featuring actual photographs, newspaper articles from the time, and re-enactment footage, this docu-film really gives you a sense of the late 1800's (when these crimes took place).
The story unfolds in an engrossing fashion and keeps you intrigued for the entire 64 minutes.
I found it fascinating to learn that there were many similarities in this case to those of more modern serial killers. Sure you've heard of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, but have you heard of HH Holmes? Maybe not. But Holmes was first and it's great to see Borowski pull Holmes' story from out of the basement and reshare it with the world.
This is a well-made documentary film and a must-see for true crime buffs!

5 out of 5 stars Creepy, thrilling, and frightening!.......2006-07-29

I watched this last night. For a new documentary filmmaker, John Borowski, is somebody to watch out for. This coumentary reminds you of old black and white thriller films but with great narration and commentary by Harold Schechter who wrote depraved about Dr. H. Holmes born Herman Mudgett. The criminal profiler reminds me of a blonde Chris Parnell and the forensics person is quite vague but explains the lack of forensics science during that time. Dr. H. Holmes was a frightening man who killed, slaughtered, dismembered humans and sold their skeletons for profit. He was truly a genius at manipulating poor men like Benjamin Pitezel and his family who were his greatest casualties. He was the first serial killer to become so notorious by the end of one century on par with England's Jack the Ripper.

3 out of 5 stars Passable but lets its fascinating subject down.......2006-03-29

I read, with great enthusiasm, the book THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY, and afterwards stumbled across the existence of this DVD documentary about H.H. Holmes. I eagerly rented it, hoping for more tidbits about Holmes.

If you aren't familiar with the story, the main thing to know is that this Holmes character was first a great con artist who constructed, in 1890's Chicago, a huge three story building housing businesses on the first floor, rental rooms on the third, and apparently a maze of "killing rooms" and "torture rooms" on the 2nd floor, where he may have killed 50-100 people, mostly visitors to the Chicago World's Fair. This documentary serves a rudimentary introduction to this story...but the book gives far better details.

The documentary has some advantages...mostly the photos: we see photos of Holmes and some of his assciates and victims. We see some of the locations where key events took place.

But the disadvantages are pretty huge: there are lots of cheesy shots of a very poor theatrical set serving as a hallway in the "murder castle." Various actors wander around it looking confused or scared, while underneath the voice of the narrator tells us more about Holmes. THere are also very tedious shots of a map of the US with a superimposed stock video of a steam locomotive...indicating that Holmes was traveling. I certainly understand that there isn't a lot of archival footage from 1893, but these poorly conceived substitutes give the whole thing a cheesy feeling and are sometimes laughable. Also, the documentary does have some commentary from "experts" who include a couple of odd-fellows, one of whom wrote a book called "Depravity" about Holmes and others. He is clearly a guy who has no problem stating his opinions about Holmes as fact, and this video in turn lets us take them as fact. But worst of all, the video also takes some of Holmes' own writings about his childhood as fact...these tidbits are drawn for the autobiography Holmes wrote while in prison...trying to win public sympathy. He was a proven liar of the first order, and yet the film takes his descriptions as fact, offering no supporting information. This is dangerous.

I can only recommend the video to someone who is intriqued by Holmes and wants a sketchy idea of who he was in one hour flat. But for a worthwhile study of this man and the times that made his deeds possible...start with THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY...which also beautifully educates about the Chicago World's Fair, one of this country's most amazing accomplishments.

If the subject matter of H.H. Holmes weren't so interesting in and of itself, this video would only rate 2 stars at best.

5 out of 5 stars Back In the Day.......2005-10-15

by Tynesha Mells

In this drama, Ja Rule, who stars as Reggie, struggles with the loss of his father. His old friend J-Bone, who is a cold-blooded thug recently released from prison, helps Reggie find who murdered his father. A week after his dad died, a preacher, Reverend Packer, came up dead. Reggie was suppose to be the one to kill him, but did he? Did Reggie kill Reverend Packer or was it some type of a setup?

Back in the Day also has a couple of romantic scenes. See, Reggie falls in love with the preacher's daughter and J-Bone doesn't approve of his love friend. As J-Bone tries to destroy what they have, Reggie learns that love is about forgiveness. But what J-bone is doing, does it work? Do Reggie and his girlfriend break up, or does it bring them closer together?

I like this movie because it leaves you wondering what's going to happen next and did this or that happen. I like movies with suspense! It kind of makes you want to be in the movie so that you could detect things. I also like this movie because everything falls in place, if you really pay attention to it!

2 out of 5 stars boring.......2005-06-24

this movie takes place in the lives of a couple of gangstas who do stupid stuff and bad stuff comes back to get them. doesn't sound too bad of a plot, but the problem is the lack of definition in the characters and budget. for example, a guy gets shot, but magically there is no blood. there was a few shocking scenes like a man getting tossed in a car trunk and set on fire and a preacher getting shot. only problem is the pace is just too slow. this isn't an action flick. it isn't even a good hood flick. i only watched it because ving rhames was in it and he is one of my favorite actors, but you can't fix bad directing.

in other words, don't waste your money here. go and buy friday, boyz in the hood, dead presidents, or menace 2 society. those are much better.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise Surprise.......2005-05-23

Just finished watching Back in the Day and I honestly have nothing but good things to say about the movie. While I'm sure it will come as no surprise that Ving did his thing what was very surprising is how well Ja performed. James Hunter, the director, needs to be given credit not only for a well written and shot movie but also for coaching that performance out of Ja. This is one for the collection, not to be missed.

I just finished watching Back in the Day. I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. I don't care what is said about Ja Rule, but this guy has a natural talent. You can't fake natural talent. I think he's a great addition to films! Ving Rhames did his thing too. What did you expect? He's a veteran! I give much props to each and everyone who had anything to do with this movie...they did a wonderful job!!! EXCELLENT!!!

        Description

When the call comes in, the clock is already ticking. Homicide detectives know the numbers: if they don't get a lead within two days, their chances of solving the crime are cut in half. THE FIRST 48 chronicles this critical period through dramatic footage of actual investigations, tailing the detectives as they race to obtain leads before the trail goes cold.In BODY IN THE PARK, a badly burned corpse is found in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park and homicide detectives Leon Lubiejewski and Michael Gross are unable to unearth more than a few clues. In RUBY STREET SHOOTING, an argument turns deadly but the people who might be able to help the investigation are not talking. Again, physical evidence is all the investigators have to work with.
