Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Anyone expecting conventional storytelling from director Nicolas Roeg will be disappointed by this tale of fate, wealth, greed, and obsession, but if you're familiar with Roeg's work, you'll know that Eureka deserves a place among such equally puzzling Roeg films as Walkabout, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Insignificance. Indeed, with its esteemed cast, international locations, and enough thematic ambition to keep things vitally intriguing, Eureka qualifies as Roeg's last grand effort; after this, Roeg settled for more workmanlike projects, abandoning the kind of daring (if not altogether successful) filmmaking that Eureka represents.

This is ostensibly the story of a Klondike prospector (Gene Hackman) who strikes it rich, only to fear that his daughter (played by Roeg's wife, Theresa Russell) and son-in-law (Rutger Hauer) are scheming not only for his wealth but his very soul. Greedy investors (Joe Pesci, Mickey Rourke) are also swooping down for Hackman's fortune, but this is no overblown episode of Dallas or Dynasty. In Roeg's hands--and through the lens of Roeg's mesmerizing camera--Eureka explores Hackman's connection to unexplained supernatural forces, to nature itself, and perhaps even to the continuum of the universe. Which is to say, this is a confounding and convoluted film by any "normal" standard, and by any measure it can hardly be considered a masterpiece. And yet, those mysterious forces are oddly compelling, and Roeg focuses their energy in this strange but beautiful film, reminding us why respected actors would readily contribute to his vision. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly great show........2007-07-04

I started watching the episodes after my father started buying them off of Itunes. I Love the series; it is very well done with cool gadgets, great hummor, a good cast and interesting plot lines for each episode. I can't wait for season two to come out.

5 out of 5 stars Something New and creative!.......2007-07-01

This show is really something that the television world can be proud of. It's something new with some great characters, interesting story lines that have you up and down every minute not to mention the creative angle of the show. The acting is incredible. SciFi took a great leap for television kind with Eureka. 2 thumbs all the way up!

5 out of 5 stars One of the few series I watch.......2007-06-29

There are lots of lengthy good reviews so I'll just say this is one of the few shows that interests me on tv. It has great humor, a great premise and great characters. The father-daughter relationship of the sheriff is wonderful, love the deputy, the wonderful chef at the cafe, pretty much all the characters. The humor is intelligent, the stories are entertaining and interesting. I really, really enjoy this show! I was so excited to hear the 2nd season was starting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-28

I love this show. I hope they don't take it off like so many of the series that have been removed. It makes you laugh, think, dream of what could be possible.
I do not miss Tuesday night on SciFi unless the power is off at my house.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Humor.......2007-06-15

This is a show that doesn't take itself seriously, so neither should you--relax, it's meant to be funny. I realize that humor is subjective, but if you like it wry, dry and quirky, you'll probably like the high-tech/small town of Eureka and its nerdy/genius denisons. I didn't want to miss a single episode. The writing is sharp, the characters engaging, and the odd mix of classic sci-fi tropes are hilarious. The plots are silly and clever at the same time, with the same reaffirming message: Humanity wins over technology--barely!

However the crew will have no choice but to scramble and finish the repairs after the Federation successfully tests a devastating new weapon near the facility. Description

Renton has joined his idols as a member of the Gekkostate, but he's finding that life on board this legendary ship isn't what he thought it would be. He struggles to fit in among his new teammates, and has to come to grips with the fact that Holland isn't exactly the perfect hero Renton thought he was. He's also subject to harsh lectures from Talho for no apparent reason, and of course, Renton is still trying to find a way to get closer to Eureka and tell her how he feels. From Bones Studio, mecha designs by Shoji Kawamori. Genre: Action/Sci-fi/Mecha.

      Amazon.com

As the sci-fi adventure-comedy Eureka Seven continues, 14-year-old Renton Thurston relentlessly pursues two goals: winning Eureka's heart and becoming a full-fledged member of the pilot-mercenaries aboard the Gekkostate. The former proves easier than the latter, although Renton's desire to join the cadre surpasses his understanding of who they are. Good-hearted and naive, Renton does whatever he's told, even when the crew hazes him mercilessly. Eureka is more of a problem: She's saddled with three obnoxious orphans who delight in tormenting Renton. Her traumatic past proves an even greater burden as a series of flashbacks that recall the mecha battles in Neon Genesis Evangelion reveals dark secrets the crew of the Gekkostate strive to conceal. As the story picks up steam, Eureka Seven begins to demonstrate the potential the first episodes suggested. 5 out of 5 stars Eureka Seven, Volume 2.......2007-05-16

this show sets the bar for other anime im not a big anime watcher but this is awsome if u seen it on adult swim or just heard about it then its for you to. this show starts of slow but if u keep with it it gets alot better

5 out of 5 stars The Story Continues.......2007-04-19

In Eureka Seven volume 2, Renton has successfully come aboard the Gekko. Now that Renton is with his love, his life couldn't be better right? Not Exactly. Eureka's adopted kids want her all to themselves and are willing to do ANYTHING to make sure Renton stays away. This first episode of the disc is very funny, especially what pranks are pulled on Renton.

Later, it's time for Renton's initiation as a a member of Gekkostate and who better than Hap and Stoner to help him? This extremely hilarious episode will leave Renton embarassed, but accepted by the crew. At the end of the day it will be Hap and Stoner that have to face -- absolute defeat.

Later, Renton meets a seemingly nice old woman with Eureka and the kids, but little does he know that she is wanted and the Gekko is after her. Afterwards, Renton starts to learn of Eureka's past and the horror's she committed while in the military. The two begin to understand each other a bit better. Finally, the Gekko takes a trip higher than the sun for a brief time of rest and thought. The disc ends with a mysterious red haired girl welcoming back Dewey, the main villain of the show.

This disc is terrific, containing 5 great episodes of Eureka Seven. The first two episodes are just really funny. The next two involve emotion and we get a glimpse beneath the surface of some character's personalities. The final episode is basically for further thought on the previous ones, as well as what to do next. These episodes are all good, though I like almost all episodes of this show. Still, I recommend this DVD to all anime fans, though if you are new to Eureka Seven, get volume 1 first.

4 out of 5 stars TRYING TO FIT IN.......2006-07-11

In Volume 2 of Eureka, the mecha take a backseat to characterization as Renton realizes that becoming part of Gekkostate involves more than just being on the ship. You also have to win acceptance from a tight-knit community that is more of a family than a rebellious gang. First up are Eureka's "children" who are jealous of Renton and use all their annoying wiles to sabotage any romance between him and Eureka. The rest of the crew is no better, sending him on an "important mission" which is nothing more than a sadistic recorded hazing. If Renton wants to become a member of the crew he's gonna have to fight for it! The other three episodes are a bit darker and show more of the character's personalities and pasts. They also serve as a wake-up call for Renton as he finds that some Gekkostate missions are a little hard to stomach in the name of money. Especially when an old lady that has treated him, Eureka, and the kids well, is revealed to be a revolutionary who Gekkostate will capture and turn over to the government for a bounty! And Renton will find that Eureka isn't the innocent but weird girl he thought she was as the crew visits the scene of an old battle in a ruined city.

I thought this volume was great because mecha were left in the background and it concentrated on the characters. I was also truly shocked to find out about the pasts of some of the crew, especially Holland and Eureka. There are no black and white characters in this show. If there are, they're just waiting for a future episode in which another side of their personality will be revealed. The romance or lack thereof between Eureka and Renton is really tender and not overdone and balances the immaturity of youth with the honesty of youth. I hate Eureka's kids! They have the most annoying voices ever so hopefully they will crash in a mecha or something! Some of the fashions of the Gekkostate crew are a little goofy and hard to look at, but fits their hippie implied dopehead image. One thing I don't like is Renton's narration which you can tell is him looking back at these events when he's older and foreshadowing that his relationship with Eureka will not work out. Let the show tell the story, not some omnipotent narrator who already knows the future!

      5 out of 5 stars great!!.......2006-07-08

This DVD was possibly the best of ones to come!Eureka Seven is better than full metal alchemst!I give this DVD and the whole series 5 stars!!!

      5 out of 5 stars A Little Backstory.......2006-06-30

While no, Eureka Seven isn't exactly the fastest moving anime I've seen, it's definitely developing into something that could be special. In volume two, we get to see a glimpse into the past of two of the characters, Holland and Eureka, mostly of their time in the military and some of the tragic events that put these two characters in the situation they're now in. We also get to see just how deep the relationship with Holland and Talho actually is. And, of course, Renton is still chasing after his crush, Eureka, only now he must face off against her three children in a battle of wits, and more often than not he comes out on the losing end. Though the situations are still mostly comedic, a little drama is slipped into this volume that shows what's to come for this anime. The few glimpses into the past shows a grim history of the world that Holland and Eureka had to live.

Still, though, while the anime itself was good, the DVD could have been much better. The special features are sparse, and not only that but there isn't even an insert in the DVD case itself. I think, as anime fans, we've gotten to the point where text-less endings and previews are no longer special features, but advertisements. So, that left one commentary track and an interview with a voice actor, neither of which really appealed to me. Heck, the only reason I didn't take a star away from this DVD was because it had five episodes, which is rare for any anime release, and something I had to appreciate considering how inexpensive Eureka Seven: Volume 2 is.

I would still highly recommend this DVD even without the special features, though, as this series will probably become one of those series that is talked about for some time. While it's clear that it may never reach the level of Fullmetal Alchemist, the pedigree of the creators (BONES, who made FMA, Rahxephon, and Wolf's Rain) promises that this series will at least get close.

As the popular adventure-comedy Eureka Seven reaches its midpoint, Renton goes AWOL from the Gekkostate and finds genuine kindness for the first time since his older sister disappeared. Charles Beams and his wife Ray offer to adopt him, but they're undercover agents for the military, on a mission to destroy the Gekkostate--and capture Eureka and the super-mecha Nervash. Renton can't abandon his old loyalties: he reluctantly departs. Back aboard the Gekkostate, everyone misses Renton--even Eureka finally recognizes her feelings for him. Renton finds his way back to the ship, arriving just in time to save Eureka from the military. This daring rescue embodies every adolescent boy's fantasies, anddirector Tomoki Kyoda does a terrific job of choreographing the mixture of aerial battles, mecha fights, and snowboarding through the clouds. It's a dynamite finale for the show's first season, and there's clearly more action on the way. Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Morning Glory.......2007-04-19

In volume 6 of Eureka Seven you get episodes 23 to 26 of the series. In our last volume, Renton left the Gekko after believing he caused Eureka to nearly die. Out on his own, Renton meets Charles and Ray Beams, a couple who take a liking to him, but with an interesting past. Back on the Gekko, the crew must move on without Renton, but Eureka still doesn't know what has happened. As leader, it is Holland's duty to inform Eureka, but will he?

Renton believes he has found a home as Charles and Ray insist he calls them papa and mama. Everything appears to be going perfectly until he discovers Charles and Ray are supposed to capture Eureka and the Nirvash. As Renton leaves the two, they are heart broken, but remain focused on their mission. Eureka finally learns what happened to Renton and is crushed. She longs to see him again, and little does she know, but Renton feels the same. After meeting a strange, but kind man and his wife, Renton decides to return to the Gekko.

In a taste of irony, Renton arrives back on the Gekko just as Eureka leaves it to look for him. She is attacked by Charles and Ray, but can Renton get to her in time? The outcome results in my opinion in one of the greatest scenes in the show.

Episode 26, Morning Glory, is my favorite episode of the show as it is the first where Renton and Eureka are together as a couple. All the episodes on this disc are full of emotion, mostly sadness, but this episode is the opposite. It depicts happiness after quite a few darker episodes in regards to emotions and leaves you feeling good, and a bit wary of the future as Charles and Ray plan a counterattack.

Overall, this is a great disc with 4 terrific episodes of Eureka Seven. If you have read this and have no idea what I'm talking about, buy the first volume of this show, starting it here would be unwise. Still, this disc is the halfway point and contains my favorite episode of the show, I recommend it to all fans of anime.

Tempers flair and misunderstandings multiply as Eureka Seven nears its midpoint. Renton and Eureka sink into despair, convinced that everyone dislikes them--even the mecha Nervash. Eureka flees into an abandoned mine and is somehow absorbed into its rock wall. Renton rescues her and his fierce desire to protect her helps the Amita Drive of the Nervash create an air wave that enables the Gekkostate to escape the attacking military. Holland blames Renton for everything, dismissing him as "dangerous," even after Renton saves his life during a mission. Renton realizes that the mecha battles he's been fighting kill human beings, and his revulsion recalls Shinji's horror in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Disillusioned and discouraged, Renton jumps ship and is picked up by Charles Beams, a dashing mercenary who's out to destroy Holland and the Gekkostate.(Unrated, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, toilet humor, brief nudity, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A Relationship Broken.......2007-04-19

In Eureka Seven volume 5 you get four very good episodes of the show. Eureka has been feeling angry and sick for a while now. She takes the Nirvash into the depths of the mine alone. Meanwhile, the military attacks the Gekko again. Eureka is partially absorbed by a scub, a strange creature, before Renton gets to her, but the damage has been done.

Holland takes a mission to rescue a Vodarac priest much to Renton's dismay who believes they should help Eureka. Little does he know that only a Vodarac priest can help Eureka. Renton goes through extreme emotional distress feeling responsible for Eureka's illness and after he is yelled at by Talho, he goes to help Holland and under extreme pressure, cracks and goes on a disturbing rampage.

Eureka has been saved by the Vodarac priest, but no one dares to approach Renton after his ordeal. Unable to take the guilt anylonger, Renton leaves the Gekko. Feeling down, Renton meets two people named Charles and Ray who accept the boy. Elsewhere, the crew try and move on keeping Eureka ignorant to Renton's departure.

Renton now lives with Charles and Ray and couldn't be much happier, and Eureka starts to cope with her feelings. However, both Renton and Eureka don't know something that will break their hearts...Overall, these four episode are very good and disturbing, as well as heartbreaching at times. The episodes are of a depressing nature as simple misunderstandings cause major problems. Still, these are some of the best episodes of the show. I recommend this disc to any fan of anime, but recommend the first DVD before this one or you will find yourself lost.

The fifth volume of Eureka Seven is all about alienation. Namely, that of Renton and Eureka, who ironically enough, love each other. But through misunderstanding and selfishness, they succeed only in making each others lives miserable. As the crew of Gekkostate desperately try to finish the repairs to their ship, hundreds of government forces surround them. Even as all of this is going on, Eureka takes off in the Nirvash. Renton sets off in high speed pursuit. When he finds her she seems to be on the verge of being absorbed by the cave walls. When he pulls her out she is losing consciouness and her body is coated in some sort of viscous liquid. Will Eureka be able to survive, and will they get back to the ship in time?

The thing that is becoming a bit annoying in this show is that we're almost halfway through the run, and we haven't got the answers to even 1/4 of the questions that are on my mind. What are Eureka and Anemone? Normal girls, androids, clones, aliens? What is the origin of the LFOs? What really happened to Renton's dad? What is the Amita drive? These are some pretty hefty questions and it's not really right to hold off on even the most basic details in such a long show. I don't know if my interest can be held that long. But for all that, Eureka Seven is one of the best anime I've seen. The animation is second to none and the characterization is really honest. It still bugs me that someone as young as Renton is having to experience all these horrible things. Renton should have made just a tad older, maybe 17 or 18, because the story being told her is definitely not for kids. Awesome show.

For more fleshing out of the situations and characters, I would highly recommend picking up the first three volumes of the manga, also published by Bandai. Other anime I would recommend would be Fullmetal Alchemist and Full Metal Panic.

As Eureka Seven continues into its second season, the story grows more complicated and the threats more dire. Renton finds himself torn by conflicting loyalties as Ray and Charles attack the Gekkostate, hoping to capture Eureka. Holland and Talho, who share a past with the invaders, organize a hi-tech defense that carries the day, but at a terrible price. The traumatized Renton learns that Eureka's origins are stranger and her significance greater than anything he had imagined. Holland built the Gekkostate to protect her. Yet Renton was the one she chose, and under their influence, the mecha Nervash is evolving rapidly. When Holland takes the Gekkostate to the secret Tresor Laboratory for repairs, Renton discovers his father, grandfather, and sister all have ties there. The filmmakers keep the story moving briskly, but the later episodes of Eureka Seven feel very different in tone than the more light-hearted first installments. 5 out of 5 stars War and Peace.......2007-06-08

In Eureka Seven Volume 7 you will get four terrific episodes of the show. Specifically, these are episodes 27 to 30. The first two focus on the battle between Charles and Ray Beams, while the other two center on rest and repairs. The episodes can be watched in English or Japanese with english subtitles. If you haven't watched the first 26 episodes of this show, don't expect to understand the following summary:

Now that Renton is back aboard the Gekko, he and Eureka are happy...until Charles and Ray Beams attack. The two vow revenge on Holland and hope to also "save" Renton. Everyone is on edge as the climactic struggle that will either way have tragic results begins.

Holland is able to kill Charles, but is wounded in the battle. Ray escapes leaving a greif stricken Renton at least a bit relieved...until she returns. A second battle sees the end of Ray, but Holland is again injured and needs blood from Renton to be saved. This infuriates Talho because Renton has his sister's blood too. Still, Renton saves Holland.

The pair of Charles and Ray are perhaps two of this show's most tragic characters. Not being able to have children of their own thanks to the Summer of Love, they hoped Renton could fill the gap in their hearts. At least they find peace in death. Renton's reacton to the whole situation is also very emotional. The first two episodes leave you happy that the Gekko triumphed, but it was bitter sweet indeed.

The next episode sees the truth about Eureka revealed. She is in fact a human shaped coralian! The Gekkostate was only formed to protect her. While this revelation is indeed important, this episodes other story steals the show. Dominic visits Axel Thurston and learns about the deep level of kindness humans are sometimes willing to show to complete strangers.

In the last episode, the Gekko and Nirvash are in desperate need of repairs. They head to the Tressior research facility to rest and make repairs. There, Renton meets new acquaintances who knew Eureka, and his grandfather. Most importantly, Eureka and Talho make some changes of life.

Overall four emotional and wonderful episodes of the show. This special edition also comes with manga volume 5, a shirt, a collectible box, and a cd. The price is well worth it and this is a great buy for any anime or Eureka Seven fan.

Like the previous collectors sets this will come with the DVD, Artbox, and T-shirt. However, it will also include volume 5 of the Manga and the volume 2 soundtrack (2 disc set). I am really looking forward to this one as it is towards the end of volume 6 and the beginning of volume seven that things start to get really interesting for the remainder of the series.

The key relationship that links Renton, Eureka, and the mecha known as the Nervash falters as the sci-fi adventure Eureka 7 continues. Is Eureka suffering from the after-effects of the Coralian storm, as her military counterpart Anemone is? Or is she upset that Renton's skills as a pilot have blossomed, as he demonstrates in a spectacular flying battle against military raiders? The Coralian also damaged the Gekkostate, and there's little cash on hand for the repairs: Holland declares the crew has entered "Penniless Mode." While they're patching together the ship in an abandoned mine, Renton discovers a mystery about the origins of the Nervash and the other flying mecha. He also establishes a telepathic bond with Eureka that confirms their friendship, but does little to satisfy his romantic fantasies. The filmmakers play these adventures against the comic relationships the crew of the Gekkostate share, and the result is a satisfying blend of excitement and humor. 4 out of 5 stars The Conflict Between the Two Emerges.......2007-04-19

In Eureka Seven volume 4, you get four great episodes of the show. On the last DVD, the Gekko was damaged in a battle with the military, now repairs are needed. During this time, a new healthfood craze strikes the Gekko. Due to this, Renton must go with Eureka and Matthew to get a health fruit. Of course, during the search, the three meet Renton's uncle and stay at his home, but he soon turns them over to the military. Renton is forced to abandon his childhood as he tries to rescue his freinds by single handedly flying the Nirvash, but this has an unexpected conesquence for Eureka...

In the second episode, the Gekko hides in a mine to make repairs, but Renton goes with a search group to check the mine, He finds a vision of Eureka and Anemone that leaves him less than alright. Next, Ken-Goh takes a team to a maker of reflection film, but finds he has died. Now Ken-Goh must try and give his less than ambitious son a boost of confidence to make the much needed repairs for the Gekko.

Finally, Renton meets an old digger in the mine and they become friends, but Renton will soon learn not to trust everyone as desperate men sometimes do very desperate things. The whole episode leaves Renton feeling down and isolated, and Eureka angry. A fateful event is about to occur....

These episode are all interesting and work very well to show the emotional progress(or lack there of) for Renton and Eureka. I recommend this disc to all fans of anime, though if you are new to Eureka Seven, start with volume 1 so you don't get lost.

      5 out of 5 stars RESENTMENT.......2006-12-04

Eureka is feeling depressed lately because the relationship between her and Nirvash has become strained. Renton is now able to pilot it without her help and Eureka takes it personally. She thought that she was the only one it would ever accept. It's left to you whether she's jealous of Renton stealing the Nirvash or of the Nirvash stealing Renton! Because Eureka clams up and won't talk to him, Renton begins to build up a little resentment of his own, which might send Eureka into a downward spiral. But this volume isn't all serious. The first episode on the disk sports a very Cowboy Bebopesque feel to it as Renton, Matthiew, and Eureka go looking for a stinky fruit said to do wonders for your health as the Gekkostate's crew is going through a little healthy diet fad.

This show is just great. It builds up the characters and plot with just enough information to keep you watching but never enough to frustrate you like some anime. Eureka and Renton seem to be growing together and becoming adults a little before their time (if Eureka is even human). The thing that intrigues me the most is what Anemone's real mission is and what exactly are Eureka and her? And what are the LFOs? The animation, voice acting, and writing are all some of the best I have ever experienced. There is still a wealth of background data to be divulged so this show has a lot of room to grow.

The 2005 broadcast series Eureka Seven offers snazzy aerial sequences that suggest snowboarding raised to the nth degree. Fourteen-year-old Renton Thurston lives with his mechanic-grandfather, but dreams of joining the elite pilot-mercenaries of the Light Finding Operation (LFO) aboard their ship the Gekkostate. When LFO pilot Eureka crashes her mecha, the Nervash Type Zero, into his grandfather's shop, Renton is smitten with her beauty and her flying skills. He brings her the Amita Drive, a mysterious invention of his father's, that increases the power of the Nervash astronomically. Thurston's latent talents win him a place on the Gekkostate, but he has a long way to go before he's accepted as a real member of the team. Eureka Seven ranks as a noteworthy series in many ways. The aerial maneuvers and mecha battles are choreographed with exceptional élan; the handsome designs recall Last Exile, but with a bolder palette; and Renton expresses the enthusiasm and insecurity of a rookie without becoming a pill. The storytelling is rather oblique, but once the filmmakers finish cutting through the thickets of back story, Eureka Seven should really soar. 5 out of 5 stars Eureka Seven, Volume 1.......2007-05-16

this show sets the bar for other anime im not a big anime watcher but this is awsome if u seen it on adult swim or just heard about it then its for you to.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Anime Begins.......2007-02-22

Eureka Seven is an anime that has surprised me. I am not the type that likes anime involving giant robots....usually. For example, I don't really like any of the Gundam animes, but Eureka Seven is an exception. The show involves LFOs which are basically giant robots people can ride things called Waves in. They can also use boards to ride these Waves, it is very much like surfing only without water.

The story's main character is a 14 year old boy named Renton Thurston, and more than anything else in the whole world, he would like to leave his boring home town and his boring life behind. Oppurtunity knocks when the Nirvash type Zero(that's another big robot) crashes where he lives and out from it comes Eureka, the girl of his dreams.

Eureka is in fact a member of GekkoState, a group of rogues that ride the waves. More importantly, Renton idolizes them. He soon comes face to face with Holland, the leader of GekkoState and his idol. Renton's dreams come true when he becomes a member of Gekkostate, leaving behind his old life... at least for now. However, Renton will not find life as a member of GekkoState as fun or easy as he originally thought.

This is a brief summary of the first five episodes of this show, which are on this DVD. For any fan of anime, I suggest this DVD. Eureka Seven is a great show that grows on you, it's strongest aspect is it's character development, but you have to watch the episodes to see this. The show has action, and at times can be heart warming, yet heart wrenching at the same time.

As previously stated, this DVD has the first 5 episodes of the show in either English or Japanese, with an interveiw from the Japanese voice actors for Renton and Eureka, they also provide commentary for one of the episodes. This DVD introduces many, but not all of the main characters, and simply gets the story rolling. Again, I only offered a brief explanation of the story, but if you buy the DVD you'll get a better idea of what it's all about, and I think and hope you'll enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars An incredible start... a lackluster finish.......2007-01-11

I know what some, if not most of you, are thinking... 3 STARS? I have seen the entire series, all the way to its conclusion. I decided to write this review to give a little warning about what could have been one of the best anime mecha shows in the last few years.

So... to start with I will have to say the first DVD here is very good, there are very few things that detract from the first 5 episodes of this series. The only thing I could say about it is the pacing in the begining is slow but you will realize later why it is paced in such a way. The characters, dialogue, and story arc is very well thought out here in the begining and I enjoyed watching it immensely.

Now my review of the rest of the series is why I am writing this today. The first "season" of Eureka Seven ( 1-26 ) is an incredible roller coaster ride that will both dazzle you and take you to places you wouldn't have considered before. The second half of the series however is an INCREDIBLE dissapointment. What was strong in the first season is weak in the second. Strangely, also some episode budgets must have been cut in the second season as I could see marked difference in quality between episodes. By far some of the worst episodes are in the second half of the show and I cannot begin to tell you how bad they are without possibly spoiling part of the story for you which I am loathe to do. The story potential that was in the first half of Eureka Seven with its mysteries and life lessons are concluded badly and at times forgotten about in the second half, basically meaning the show felt like they were creating the ending as they were releasing episodes. This generally works well in episodic shows but with such buildup, character developement, and mystery that was in the first half this does not work here. To be honset if it was not for the first half I doubt I would have been able to finish watching the second, it was that painful to watch at times.

I wrote this review to warn you what will be coming ahaed and to say that Eureka Seven is an excellent anime with an unfortunate finish. I am not saying do not watch this show but to just be a little wary of the second half, it could have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars Gekkostate of mind is no joke.....enjoy!.......2006-12-11

I hopefully won't give away too many spoilers.
I had seen a few episodes of Eureka Seven on Adult Swim, but I remained skeptical. [...] Yes, Eureka Seven has its own wikipedia page.
I eventually bought this special edition since I figured I would end up buying the soundtrack at some point, and I figured the shirt and box were nice too. Oh, by the way, the view of the shirt the product image shows is the back of the shirt. The front of the shirt has the Gekkostate emblem in the top left. After reading Courtland J. Carpenter's review in which he describes Gekkostate as being more like a terrorist cell, I was kinda surprised at the shirt. I love my shirt, by the way.
As for the show itself, well, you'll be proud to wear the Gekkostate emblem as well because Gekkostate is just awesome. While being deadly serious at times, Renton permeates the show with a youthful optimism that is infectious. One of the major themes throughout the show is the idea and importance of choice as well as being loyal to the ones who matter. Additionally, be prepared to see characters face the consequences of their actions and choices.
There's something very special about this series and the characters in it. The characters all have their own histories and backgrounds, and very few of them seem flat. Even Dewey has a certain aristocratic air about him even though he comes across as very easily despicable. Eureka may remind some viewers of Cheza from Wolf's Rain, but I caution that even Eureka has her own past and pain. In one sense, this makes her more real. In another sense, it may make viewers attach more strongly to her. If a viewer grows attached to Eureka, they will have some strong feelings later in the series which may reflect the viewer's own personality and traits of character. Will someone despise her, pity her, or maybe agree with Renton that taking a stand is the right thing to do?
I will leave potential viewers with this in mind. One Sunday morning, I was watching the second episode on the disc while mulling over what to speak on that night at church. I was responsible for the evening's Communion meditation. The episode's opening scene with Renton and his falling predicament made me think about a message:

"Make a choice, commit to it, and see it through. Don't be afraid to get out and take a risk for the ones you care about. Take a risk; make a choice; stand up and be counted for something that matters. After all, that's what Christ did when he committed his life to us on the cross at Calvary. That's one of the reasons we remember His spilt blood and broken body when we partake in Communion. He made a choice; he took a stand for us; He bled and died for us. Is it really too much then, for us to take small risks in our own lives? Is it too much for us to commit to those who matter to us? Is it too much for us to find something to believe in and commit to it? Christ committed to us, and we should commit to each other and to things in life that are worthwhile."

If you let it, Eureka Seven will make you think, and you may be surprised what application that ends up having in your own life. I know I was surprised.
Another person and I were discussing this later...
"Wait, you got the idea for tonight from that series you've been watching?"
"Yeah, but I'll never admit it to (the pastor, name withheld)."
      "Good call."
We both had a good laugh.

The action ramps up in Eureka 7, providing series director Tomoki Kyoda and his crew with a showcase for their skill at choreographing air battles. The military and the crew of the Gekkostate pursue the Coralian, a mysterious storm that manifests itself physically, electro-magnetically and psychologically. Renton and Eureka enter the Coralian in the Nervash; at the same time, young officer Dominic and the bratty Anemone attempt a similar maneuver in their own mecha. Their encounter produces a shattering crash that leaves Eureka and Anemone in shock. As they attempt to aid their respective partners, Renton and Dominic establish the kind of rivalry tinged with grudging respect that characterizes many of the Gundam adventures. The story development takes place in the first three episodes; episode 14 rehashes previous events, presumably for viewers who started watching in the middle of the series. Description

Since Renton's arrival, Eureka's relationship with the Nirvash has been changing. More mysteries await, however, as the Gekko has discovered a mysterious phenomenon called a Coralian. Although she's not really up to the task Eureka goes out in the Nirvash and flies inside. Once inside, she is attacked by a new LFO. Renton, meanwhile, has fallen unconscious, and has a dream about Eureka and the girl she's fighting. But is it really just a dream, or is he somehow connected to Eureka and the Nirvash in this state? Meanwhile, the Gekko has come under fire by the Federation warship Izumok, and the members of Gekkostate will have their hands full escaping from both the warship and the Coralian, especially without the Nirvash to assist them. In Eureka Seven volume 3, you get four great episodes of the show. For some time now, Eureka's health has been getting worse. Now the Gekko encounters a corallian, a mysterious phenomenon that everyone, especially Holland, feels excited about. As Renton tries to find out what a corallian is, the time to enter it has come for Renton and Eureka.

As the two prepare to enter the corallian in the Nirvash type Zero, they are ambushed by the red haired girl named Anemone in the Nirvash type The End. The first episode ends with a battle full of spectacular(and disturbing) images and a feeling of anxiety. The second episode has Renton, Eureka, and Anemone inside the corallian where very bizarre things happen. Can Renton find Eureka in this strange place, or will Anemone devour him?

Episode three is the most funny one by far as a man named Dominic, secretly in love with Anemone, meets Renton after he, Eureka, and Anemone leave the corallian. Both Eureka and Anemone are unconscious and need medicine. Renton forces Dominic to take him along to get the medicine. The two learn a bit about each other in this interesting and fairly funny journey together.

The final episode is basically a recap of every episode from the beginning of the show so far and isn't anything new, though a new opening and ending theme are present. Overall, the first three episodes on this disc are great, the fourth is alright. Still, any fan of anime would enjoy this disc, but if you are new to Eureka Seven, I recommend volume 1 and 2 first or you'll be lost.

4 out of 5 stars INTO THE CORALIAN.......2006-10-27

When Holland sends out Renton and Eureka on the Nirvash to investigate a strange occurence called a "Coralian", even he isn't really sure what will happen, but it seems like he knows there is an element of danger to the enterprise. A government ship is also in the area and sends out its Eureka lookalike Anemeone in her own disturbed looking mech. Anemone might LOOK like Eureka but her demeanor is completely different. At one moment she seems childlike and playful, the next she is a raving bloodthirsty lunatic until she receives a chemical injection from her handler Dominic, who seems to have the same feelings for her as Renton does for Eureka. Renton, Eureka, and Anemone are all sucked into the tripped out mental surreal world of the Coralian, a place of weird nightmares and bizarre encounters where Renton might just lose his mind!

I'm not much of a fan for anime episodes that feature dream sequences because usually the experience is so bizarre and pointless that it just ends up boring me to death. Thankfully, the scenes on this dvd are relatively short or are either so funny or touching that I didn't mind that much. The episode where Dominic and Renton team up was the highlight in my mind because it features two scrappy characters willing to deal with their own character flaws in order to save the girls they care about. The only thing that marred this third volume was the last episode that was mainly a filler recapping previous material from slightly different points of view. While there was some new information, it hardly warranted a full episode of exposition. Otherwise, this installment was great.
