THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962) still has the power to stun us, to fascinate us, and to raise our ire when we recall the 50's as the pervue of Senator Joseph McCarthy. John Frankenheimer was one of the first directors to take on McCarthy. James Gregory as Sen. John Iselin was a standout both as a dupe and a would-be demagogue. Gregory, a good luck charm for Frankenheimer, who used him often, was able to adlib more than half his lines giving a bravura performance.

The director and his friend George Axelrod bought the rights to the Richard Condon novel, but were having difficulty finding backing for the film. Enter Frank Sinatra who was very interested in playing Capt. Marko, and the project immediately found funding. Sinatra wanted Lucille Ball to play Mrs. Iselin, but Frankenheimer had just worked with Angela Lansbury in ALL FALL DOWN, and he had great faith in her. She certainly did an excellent portrayal, one of the very best in her career. Even Meryl Streep playing the part in the recent remake paled in Lansbury's shadow. As the mole, the real Communist operative, she was part black widow, part seductress, and part assassin -giving us a glimpse of what a real zealot is capable of; something we are immersed in today in the Middle East. Frankenheimer said that in that last scene where the mother is giving Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) his final assignment, and she begins kissing him passionately, he could only take the scene part ways; because in the novel the mother slept with her son to seal the bargain.

Sinatra seemed to do best on the first take, a situation Frankenheimer was very aware of. His acting in this film was excellent, finding just the right notes for the frustration of reacting to his "brainwashing", and finding the courage to confront Raymond Shaw, the bogus Medal of Honor winner. Janet Leigh was effective in her underwritten part -a part expanded to be an FBI agent in the interesting remake. Laurence Harvey was picked specifically for Shaw precisely because he could project being "unlikable". I did not like his attempt at an American accent, but then I have never been much of a Harvey fan. His transitions after his hasty marriage seemed forced and inept for me. John McGiver in a rare dramatic role was very good, leaving us with a strong impression of a principled, brave, and steadfast senator. Leslie Parrish as his daughter, Jocelyn, look great in her black strapless bra, but brought very little else to the part. Khigh Dheigh found in his character, Dr. Yen Lo, a signature part for his career. He is not actually oriental, and he found himself playing them for the remainder of his career. Henry Silva, a penetrating and intense actor (who can forget him in the last scene of VIVA ZAPATA (1952)?), also created a character in his Chunjin that we will not soon forget. His karate fight with Marko was one of the first of that type on film, and he and Sinatra rehearsed it for weeks before they shot it.

Frankenheimer shot the film in 41 days, with the minimum of location shooting. Some of the backdrop and stock footage looks a bit pedestrian today, but it worked well in 1962. He used his stable of actor friends to good use, folks like James Gregory, John McGiver, Albert Paulson, Whit Bissell, Douglas Henderson, Barry Kelley, and Lloyd Corrigan. It is a film that runnith over with excellent performances, and taunt and sparse and delivered like punches to the gut.

Chilling !!!.......2007-04-05

By far one of the best Cold War psychological dramas ever made. The fact that this was made before the era of CG graphics,shaky cam effects and ear-splitting soundtracks for effect only show how unnecessary they are when you have an excellent script,backed by an outstanding cast and great director who lets the story tell itself. The choice for Black & White enhances the suspense. Frank Sinatra gives a moving and powerful performance as he frantically tries to beat the clock in what is to be,unknown until the very end,the assassination of the presidential candidate, and the insertion of a puppet senator controlled(unknowingly) by Communists in his place.The idea of McCarthy era Communist hunts and brainwashing tactics,common to the era,gets the viewer involved right up to its conclusion. This is but a few of my favorite movies which I can enjoy time & time again as freshly as the first time. See it once and I think you'll agree!

A Classic Cold war Thriller.......2007-04-03

This is the original "The Manchurian Candidate", released in 1962 and very much derivative of the tensions of the Cold War. The Cold War context provides its suspenseful and haunting story with a logic denied the recent and convoluted remake starring Denzel Washington and Liev Schieber.

Frank Sinatra leads an outstanding cast as Major Marco Bennett, an Army officer recently returned from combat in Korea, who is troubled by strange dreams associated with a patrol for which Sergeant Raymond Shaw (played by Laurence Harvey) was awarded the Medal of Honor. Bennett, in search of his own peace of mind, makes contact with other survivors of the patrol and ultimately with Raymond Shaw himself. An encounter with Shaw's Korean houseboy triggers a memory of the patrol different from the account parroted by all the survivors. Bennett's relentless investigation of this anomaly slowly unravels a murderous plot involving Raymond's manipulative mother (played in an Oscar-nominated turn by Angela Lansbury), and insipid politician stepfather (played by veteran character actor James Gregory), and a group of shadowy Chinese military officers. Bennett will end up racing against time to defeat the plot, which has as its goal nothing less than a monstrous crime against the American Government.

Frank Sinatra has lots of help in this film. Janet Leigh plays a very understanding love interest. Laurence Harvey is superb as the lonely and tortured Raymond, manipulated by his enemies in ways he cannot fight and forced into horrific acts. Angela Lansbury gives a compelling performance completely at varience with her "Murder, She Wrote" personna. A kiss between Raymond and his mother may be one of the most chilling moments ever captured in an American movie.

The DVD provides a crisp black and white rendition of the movie, along with several interesting special features on the making of the movie.

This movie is highly recommended to those seeking a superb Cold War thriller featuring a collection of first-rate actors in an excellent story.

If you like thrillers this movie is great. It seems a little dated now but the acting and characters are rich and the plot is interesting.

Widely considered one of the best and most influential films ever made, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is a Cold War thriller released in 1962 (near the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis) that concerns a brainwashed assassin tasked to kill the President (shades of John F. Kennedy). The intense reality of this film led star Frank Sinatra (who plays Maj. Bennett Markoe) to pull the film from distribution for decades after Kennedy's shooting death in Dallas, 1963.

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE concerns Korean War Medal of Honor winner Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), the son of powerful politicians, whose bravery under fire saved most of his platoon. However, Markoe and several other men have been having odd dreams in which a ladies' garden club transmutes into a meeting of high-level Communists during which Captain Shaw kills two men upon their command. Markoe quickly becomes convinced that these dreams may be more real than anyone wants to admit.

Shaw, described as the "kindest, gentlest man" anybody ever met is in reality a one-dimensional stick of a man whose head "always seems about to come to a point" according to his own dragon lady mother (Angela Lansbury).

Lansbury is busy shoving her stupid red-baiting husband (James Gregory) toward the White House. Satirically, the McCarthyesque candidate has made his career denouncing Communists in the government---how many? Well, the ketchup bottle says "57", so that's an easy number to remember.

In the meantime, there are enemies to be neutralized, including Raymond's beloved employer who is a left-wing newspaper owner, his Senatorial liberal father-in-law (John McGiver), and his cute but overly influential wife Jocelyn (Leslie Parrish), all of whom end up dead.

After Jocelyn's death, the distraught Shaw seeks out Markoe, who discovers that Shaw himself is the killer, programmed to follow orders when shown a Queen of Diamonds (a little Alice in Wonderland, anyone?) from any card deck.

Finally becoming aware of his own brainwashing at the hands of the Red Chinese, Shaw takes revenge on the agents assigned to be his American Control Officers---who are none other than his staunch anti-Communist parents, the would-be President and First Lady.

A film truly frightening in its implications, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is a film that should be required viewing for any American voter.

A classic in the genre of Vietnam documentaries. This 1999 film is about American POW airmen, and their ordeal throughout the Vietnam war. What I love about this film is that there is no political angle - these men tell their own stories in their own words, framed by America at the time. No one can walk away from this film and not feel touched.

A Very Thorough, Powerful Documentary.......2005-09-15

It is simply the best documentary on the American POWs in North Vietnam. After reading numerous books on the Vietnam POW experience, this film is very thorough. It gets chilling when the POWs are speaking, then a flashback film footage showing their conditions at the time of their captivity. My anger towards Jane Fonda was heightened as I watched this film. I'll never forget her calling the POWs "liars and hypocrites" and also stated that "history will judge them harshly." She also made the insane claim that they were not tortured. I'm glad they omitted Fonda and her POW role, as she would denegrate this film and the truth it displays.

Perhaps the best television I've ever seen..........2004-02-09

This piece is incredible. I caught it on PBS during one Memorial Day weekend a few years ago and was spellbound. I taped it onto VHS and watch it several times a year. It is an incredibly powerful documentary--the best television I've ever seen (thank goodness it's on DVD now as well).

Common Men, Uncommon Courage.......2003-10-26

Many of the descriptions of the experiences of the POW's of the Vietnam War that I was aware of centered around the torture that they went through. This video gave a fuller description of who our POW's were rather than the specific torture that they experienced. I don't know if enough was said about the leadership of people like Denton, Risner, and Stockdale. I was amazed at how normal the men looked given the horrors that they went through. I heard nothing of permanent damage. There was a brief section on what the wives experienced. I don't remember anything on the diet of the POW's. I never knew that there had been at least one escape (for which the recaptured POW's and remaining POWs paid dearly). I would have liked to know how many POW's died in prison. I was also surprised to hear that some thought their treatment got better after the death of Ho Chi Mihn.

For a full picture of who our pow's were and what they experienced done in a format that was tolerable for the more squeamish among us I think this was very well done.

An exceptionally good documentary...........2003-05-03

In what is probably the most revealing documentary ever created on ex-POW's from Vietnam, Return With Honor is an outstanding testament to absolute courage, honor, bravery, camaraderie, and survival.

Individual interviews woven with footage from United States and Vietnamese archives paint a very vivid and oftentimes emotional picture of the brutal experience suffered by our U.S. servicemen held captive in Hanoi.

Leaving very little to the imagination, this documentary explores the many facets of captivity to include barbaric torture, communication processes between prisoners, coping with solitary confinement, demoralizing loneliness, and inhuman living conditions. Additional interviews with the spouses of POW's reveal their pain and emotion they dealt with on the home front while not knowing the fates of their husbands.

Finishing off with their triumphant return home, it is truly inspirational and heartwarming to see the footage of these heroic men reunited with their families.

This DVD itself has superb sound and video qualities and offers good additional features such as 26 biographies of POW's and interviews with the producers on the making of Return With Honor.

An excellent film with an objective perspective.......2005-07-10

This film is a very pleasant surprise. Usually movies based on the so-called antisemitic incidents tend to be schmalzy and overdone, with bad guys badly demonized and good guys godly idealized (see, for example, "The Fixer" or "Schindler's List".) "Prisoner of Honor" does not suffer from such shortcomings - Picquard's dislike of Jews is not passed over, and reasonable motives of some of his opponents are not suppressed, either. Richard Dreyfus (one of the film's producers) is truly excellent in the role of Colonel Picquard, and the supporting crew (mostly British actors, including the late Oliver Reed) does a very good job indeed. The ironic touch, so typical of the director Ken Russell ("The Devils", "Mahler"), which drew the undeserved ire of the previous reviewer, definitely adds color and nerve to the entire show. All in all, a film truly worth watching.

A Dreyfuss affair a fair 'Dreyfus affair'?.......2000-10-09

This is an accurate account of the famous (infamous, more likely)
Dreyfus affair, a scandal that nearly drove France to civil war at the
turn of the century. And it could have been a good movie too, if
director Ken Rusell hadn't overdone it miserably by pretending
"the whole thing was a comedy"!

The film manages to get
its facts right (a rare acomplishment for a Hollywood movie), features
an elaborate production, with fine costumes and sets (although its
'Paris' resembles London), and boasts a great cast led by Richard
Dreyfuss, who gives an above-his-usual performance as the officer
trying against all odds to save Dreyfus, while disliking him
personally for being a Jew.

Why, then, spoil it with all those
cartoonish "comic" details that serve no purpose whatsoever,
except to ruin the whole picture?: A French general, at work, dresses
as Zeus for a portrait (its painter complete with pointy moustaches
and a red beret!) later on display in his office. Another general (a
fat, grumpy, bearded lout who looks a lot like Bud Spencer, and sinks
every scene he's into) sings child-like racist songs with his junior
officers at an elegant military club that seems to accept all ranks
inside its halls, for one sees in one room the entire French army,
from maréchales to privates, getting drunk, pounding tables and
shouting at each other in their messed up uniforms. There's a War
Minister serving cake to his subordinates, a chanteuse lampooning 'La
Marsellaise' (the French applaud!), a German officer -pickelhaube and
all- dancing with a male spy in drag, and a sinister meeting inside a
church, with generals sniggering as they cross themselves. My, oh my!
Aren't these the bad guys!

Three cheers for Yankee tenacity!.......2007-01-25

A group of soldiers escape from a Vietnamese prison camp and meet danger, mayhem, prostitutes, and adversity in the jungle. Then they find a broken down airplane that can get them to safety -- if the plane can be repaired. Oh boy! Do they make it to freedom? John Phillip Law is just as charming, disarming and brave and incredibly handsomed and rugged as can be. All JPL fans -- you'll enjoy this movie. I'm glad I own a copy!

The worst movie I've ever seen.......2005-08-04

I got this in a Civil War movie 4 pack. It's simply the worst film I've ever seen. Poor acting, poor coordination. No exagerations.

Ok .. It is not "Gone With The Wind" or "Gods and Generals" What it is a "5 Star Amateur Effort" on a Civil War Story with no 6 or 7 figure actors. It utilizes Civil War reenactment footage and some good photography..

Proof there's no life after film school!.......2004-12-20

Words cannot best describe how I feel about this movie, but perhaps I can try. What did I feel when I watched this movie? I think it was along the lines of pain, torture, grief...at one point there was crying. I think halfway through I even had a knife to my wrists and only the hands of those nearby saved me.

Imagine taking all those famous Civil War sagas like "The Blue and the Gray" or "North and South." Now imagine combing all that into an hour and twenty minutes. Now imagine giving it a budget of $5 and casting all your film school friends as characters. What I have just described is this movie.

This movie is low-budget in every aspect of the word. The dresses look like they came from a highschool play, the same room is used like once or twice, and the military uniforms are only uniforms because the people wearing them happen to be in the military and they also happen to be wearing them. The blood in one scene looked like smeared lipstick (I'm not kidding). And the battle scene...ho ho ho! The battle scenes are the best! Imagine this:

1) Shots of a re-enactment.
2) Shot of two confederate guys shooting.

That's the battle scene.

And acting, well, that just tops the charts. Really bad southern accents combined with the corniest lines imaginable do not make for good cinema. "Ah thought ah lehft mah killin'...on da battahfeeld." Even Miles O'Keefe, the poor man's poor man's poor man's poor man's Chuck Norris, can't save this movie. He had more dignity running around blaring NO! in "Cave Dwellers."

Should you see this movie? If you've seen "Gettysburg," "Glory," "Gods and Generals," "North and South," or "The Red Badge of Courage"...then go out and buy those movies. Forget you ever read this review and forget you ever heard of this movie.

BLOOD AND HONOR is one bad movie.
1. The same battle scenes are shown twice, with the same results. The blood looks like ketchup more than any film I've ever seen.
2. Miles O'Keefe receives star billing and is hardly in the movie at all.
3. The acting by all (except a mildly effective Andy Hamrick in the role of Craig) is atrocious. The girl who plays Caroline is so bad, she's hilarious.
4. The direction is inane and amateurish; the narration is ridiculous.
5. This plays like a bad, real bad Barbara Caitland novel.
6. The movie ends out of nowhere and we never know what happens to Miles O'Keefe's character.
7. During the out credits, they show actors in scenes that weren't even in the movie. Like who is the black couple and where did they even come from?
8. A film produced by David Heavener, one of b movie's most inauspicious actors/directors/singers.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME UNLESS YOU REALLY LIKE BAD BAD MOVIES.

Excellent pick for the April 1st Holiday........2003-03-17

This is without a doubt the finest film ever made. The acting is sans rival. Especially effective is the director use of period costumes which he uses with a surreal flourish. Despite the gore of battle, the hoop skirts and civil war reinactment garb remain unsoiled. This is a film that will stay with you, sort of like a extra greasy meal that comes back to haunt you at 2 in the morning. APRIL FOOL.
