3 out of 5 stars Bette Davis, bootlegging, and a bunch of delinquents.......2007-06-13

Undistinguished, yet a perfectly watchable depression/prohibition-era melodrama set mostly in a workhouse for delinquent kids. For those Bette Davis fans out there, yes, Bette Davis is in this movie, but it by no means a "Bette Davis movie". Ms. Davis plays the girlfriend of a bootlegger, but doesn't get to do much besides show that she has the conscience her boyfriend lacks (until the unlikely conclusion where the bootlegger all of a sudden feels guilt for those he ground under his boots on the way up). She's also not onscreen much, with most of the running time being devoted to a misguided kid trying to make his way in the workhouse after he refuses to dime out his bottlegger boss.

All in all, this churned-out, second-tier melodrama is a fairly painless stopover for Bette Davis completists. The movie is only 72 minutes long, the print isn't bad (though it's not sharp and restored, by any means), and there's a nice gallery of other vintage-era DVD offerings to scroll through, which mostly feature original movie poster art on the DVD boxes pictured.

I would recomemnd selling this until a beter copy can be made

4 out of 5 stars Early Bette Davis melodrama.......2006-06-03

Part reform movie and part "B" picture melodrama, Junior Durkin plays a kid who idolizes bootlegger Pat O'Brien; when O'Brien hires him as a go-fer, Durkin is in his glory. Little does he realize that O'Brien has eyes for his girlfriend, Bette Davis. When the bootlegger's joint gets raided and Durkin is arrested, he refuses to rat out O'Brien and the kid is sent to reform school for three years. Here the boy is cruelly mistreated; when another boy at the school dies, a newspaper threatens to expose what's going on (that's the reform angle). When Durkin finds out from his mother that O'Brien and Davis are a number, he escapes and pays a visit to Davis. She feeds him the line that she was only doing it to get O'Brien to spring him. Then when the cops show up on Durkin's tail, O'Brien confesses. It's a pretty unbelievable ending, and the picture is not very memorable. It's interesting to see Davis this early in her career, though, and some of her scenes with O'Brien are decent, if not great.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Sound.......2000-06-05

Story OK. Main complaint is the quality of the print (purchased from Amazon). Casette labeled "Hell House, 1934" which is incorrect: It is "Hell's House" and it was produced in 1932. Print had numerous scratches and the soundtrack was very poor.

5 out of 5 stars No, It is Escape from Hell (2000);The Christian Film. It is not this Garbage from 1979!.......2005-12-11

No, look at the box cover and the year of the film for Escape from Hell. The Christian movie was made in 2000 in where it talks about a doctor dieing. The Christian movie stands out, it has two actors on the front cover only plus fire as the background. Good luck in finding it.

2 out of 5 stars Two Reviews.......2005-10-14

First. This is a movie for the lovers of the genre. It is low cost (soft?)core sexy movie with some sociological sides (probably). There is just one scene with some skilfull dyrector working, when the "heroin" bites one snake.

Second. I bought this movie becouse I was a friend of the dyrector that recently died. This is the only Movie avaliable on DVD and I wanted to have a memory of him. It is possible to see the efforts of him to put in this movie some ideas, as the white gloves of the masterof the prison or the love for the music of the doctor.

By the way, it is interesting to know also this side of the late '70 Cinema.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Christian Escape from Hell.......2005-09-06

Note to all who are looking for John Hagee's Escape From Hell. This isn't it - it's another that you won't be interested in. Two movies, the same name, very different genres.

3 out of 5 stars average women in prison erotic movie.......2005-08-12

This movie is about a group of girls in prison who plan to escape because of the arival of a new prison bos, who is verry sadistic. The movie shows a lot t & a. the irritating in the movie is that they speak englisch and most girls are white altough te story tooks place in south america.

1 out of 5 stars escape from hell.......2005-04-08

I am glad I read the reviews of this movie before I bought it
there is another movie out with the same title that is a spiritual movie about Dr. Eric Robinson who dies and learns that hell is real where all who rejects God's grace will go. Please don't confuse this movie with that one.

1 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2006-10-25

I recently purchased this DVD set because the price was minimal. Before I got to take it out of the plastic I noticed a promotion stating one of the DVD had a transsexual superstar in a starring role. I personally like ladies exclusively, and not wanna be women. I have not decided if I will throw the DVD set out with the morning trash or take a chance on viewing the second DVD. Unless you are into that gender confusion, I would think twice before purchasing this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars "I know how his mind works.".......2006-06-26

Set in Manchester, England, "Hell is a City" is one of several Hammer film noir titles recently re-released on DVD. The film revolves around the classic plot of the antagonism between two very different men on opposite sides of the law. Violent gangster Don Starling (John Crawford) is in the slammer thanks to the efforts of his old schoolmate Inspector Harry Martineau (Stanley Baker). When Martineau receives the news that Starling broke out of prison--killing a warden in the process--he knows it is just a matter of time before Starling heads back to Manchester and his old stomping grounds. While the other detectives think that Manchester is the last place Starling will run to, Martineau understands Starling and knows the fugitive will need money and a place to hide.

Martineau and his men begin contacting all of Starling's old acquaintances--including Furnisher Steele (Joseph Tomelty) and his attractive deaf-mute granddaughter, Silver (Sarah Branch). But Starling has a number of women in his past too--barmaid Lucky Luske (Vanda Godsell) and Chloe Hawkins (Billie Whitelaw) now married to bookie (turf accountant) Gus Hawkins (Donald Pleasance). In a desperate scheme to get quick cash, Starling commits another murder, and Martineau is hot on his trail--determined to get his man.

The film revolves around the trail Starling leaves behind. Many of Starling's old associates hold clues to his whereabouts, and even though they have their own reasons for disliking Starling, they're loath to rat him out. One great scene involves the police rounding up men holding a "tossing school"--an illegal game of bets on the outcomes of coin tossing. The games take place on a heath with lookouts in key positions leading out of town. Martineau's dour character adds a great deal of interest to the film. Always ready to hand out advice about women to his young policemen, Martineau throws himself into his police work to avoid the horrors of his home life. Martineau's wife, Julia (Maxine Audley) is a lonely woman who sits and waits for her husband to return and then fights with him when he does. In contrast to Julia, divorced barmaid Lucky seeks a 'no-strings-attached' relationship with Martineau, and she propositions him every chance she gets.

For fans of British gangster films, "Hell is a City", directed by Val Guest and based on a novel by Maurice Proctor, is well worth catching. This is a gorgeous, flawless black and white print with a jazz score. DVD extras include: an alternate ending, talent bios, the trailer, and commentary by Val Guest--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars Hell Is A City, I was there!.......2004-08-31

I watched a part of this movie being filmed, as a child in Manchester, in 1959. The scene was filmed in a district called Levenshulme, and concerned the Donald Pleasance & Billie Whitelaw characters. Donald Pleasance plays the part of a "bookmaker", who in England is a person who takes bets on horse racing & other sports. At the time of its release I thought it to be a pretty exciting movie. I still think that it is one of the best of its type, and it captures the Manchester of that time very well. Still can't think why they used John Crawford as the villain! There is no explanation as to why he speaks with an " American" accent, if he is supposed to be a childhood aquaintance of the Stanley Baker character. Baker does a passable Northern accent! The film is fairly true to the book from which it was made, although the mute girl "Silver" dies in the book. I have a Levenshulme website, which has a page dedicated to Hell Is A City. It can be found at http://www3.telus.net/public/nixonkg

3 out of 5 stars LACKLUSTER CRIME DRAMA...........2003-01-14

An American thug blows into Manchester, England for a "job" and causes a crisis with the police and his former cronies who thought he was "out of business". Considering this is a Hammer production and directed by Val Guest, this is pretty tepid stuff. The film is so crisp and clean (even in the action sequences) it looks as if Guest was afraid to get his hands dirty. I can't call this "noir" at all. It's too sterile looking and the key noir elements aren't here. No shadowy suspense, no "dames" (as the package contends)--just ordinary looking wives and a middle-aged barmaid who looks like someone's mother, and no psychological conflict for any of the characters. Just hum-drum goings on with the cops-after-a-crook stuff. The acting is capable and the film looks great on DVD. Too bad it isn't better. With all the noir crime dramas that need to be on DVD and all the other Hammer films that SHOULD be on DVD by now---I found myself watching this and wondering "Why?" And by the way, despite the misleading title and the moody jazz score, there is no implication in this film that "hell is a city". It looks like quaint merry old Manchester, England having a busy day.

4 out of 5 stars British Cops and Robbbers Noir.......2002-12-17

Hell is a City is a pretty good crime flick. Even though it is formulaic (cop vs. robber, heist, manhunt) the performances, setting and direction make it an interesting film for folks who like this kind of stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Lost gem unearthed.......2002-12-07

"Hell Is A City" is a little-known Hammer film that garnered some of the company's best reviews at the time of its release in 1960. It was nominated for two British Academy Awards, for Best Screenplay (Val Guest) and Best Actor (Stanley Baker). The DVD from Anchor Bay is a beautiful black-and-white transfer, with crisp, sharp images. The cast is superb, and the pacing is excellent. Donald Pleasance (Halloween, Escape from New York) has a small role as a bank president who finds a little surprise in his attic.
The film comes with an alternate, "happier" ending that didn't sit well with writer/director Guest. However, I believe it's the first Hammer film released on VHS or DVD that comes with a second ending. If you're a Hammer fan, or a fan of film noir, you'll want "Hell Is A City" in your library...

Product Description

Dr. Eric Robinson wants to believe and experience that infinite love and warmth that near death" testimonies claim is on the other side of life. His colleague, Dr. Marissa Holloway, is on a crusade to alleviate the fear of death and suffering by proving to the world that heaven awaits everyone. In a moment of desperation, Dr. Robinson faces death and discovers the reality of hell - a place the Bible vividly portrays - a hell from which we must all escape

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars not too great.......2006-08-09

I order & watched this movie last year, and as far as Christian films go, I personally have seen MUCH better-I can't explain it too well, except that the acting was just OK, and the film type they used felt home-movieish & amateurish. The messages they were conveying were right on the money, tho. The special effects were good, tho, and the idea about the sign on top of the hospital was really clever. Would I buy it again? Hmm, probably not. It didn't give me chills once.

3 out of 5 stars Just Agree.......2006-05-15

I just want to say that I agree with the opinion given by Tommy C. Ellis.

3 out of 5 stars Why would a loving God create hell?.......2005-11-03

Escape from Hell grapples with a fascinating topic. Many theological answers have been compiled, but this still stumps people. The depth of God's love contrasted with the horror of an eternal hell. The film is an hour-long video drama that explores this question from the perspective of a clinical researcher who believes that it would be wonderful if the existence of a heaven-like afterlife could be proven, because this knowledge would aid psychologists in helping patients and loved ones cope with death. Her partner in this quest is a medical doctor struggling with his own demons of depression, emptiness, and anger against God.

The bottom-line message is that hell is real, and it is really bad. Either hell-preaching Christians are fear-mongers, adopting immature and psychologically harmful tactics, or the more liberal variety of Christian is offering a false hope to everyone, and is failing to give necessary warning. Escape from Hell may not convince you, but it will foster much food for thought.

Bottom-line: The dialogue is intelligent, and the acting is good. The action and storyline are acceptable, but not outstanding. This is a decent film, suitable for showing to those open to Christian teachings.
