A good movie, Susan Hayward is always good in all she has done, but this film is medium and fairly predictable.

Academy Award performance from Miss Hayward........2006-08-01

I don't care if the critics considered this a bad movie or not, Susan Hayward's performance is outstanding and so is Marsh Hunts'. Wait till you see the fight scene between the two of them, it looked like these broads forgot it was acting! Miss Hayward insisted on playing the bedroom fire scene without a double and the subtleness with which she plays a drunk is every bit as good as Kim Stanley did in The Goddess! If you like melodrama and love Susan Hayward, this is a film you can't miss.

Start of a great career.......2006-07-28

Susan Hayward gives a bravura performance in her first starring role. It was clear from this film that she would someday be an Academy Award-winning best actress.

Smash Up: The Story of A Comeback.......2006-01-11

This is probably the most important movie of Susan Hayward's career. Susan was only considered as a supporting actress to Paramount's leading ladies before she broke away from the studio and made "Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman" with Walter Wagner's guidance. In the 1940's, when an actress approached 30 was considered an end of a career, Susan Hayward made a comeback. Susan Hayward was always the advisory to Paulette Goddard, Veronica Lake and others. Susan Hayward's best parts before Smash-Up were "Adam Had Four Sons," and "Among The Living." Susan will keep you entertained throughout the whole movie. True, Lee Bowman's and Eddie Albert's performances were wooden but Susan makes up for the movie with her strong performance. Susan earned her first Oscar nomanitation with this movie. Susan Hayward never gave a bad performance. However, if you want to know what are the best Susan Hayward movies, here are my favorites: Adam Had Four Sons, Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman, My Foolish Heart, I Can Get It For You Wholesale, With a Song In My Heart, I'll Cry Tomorrow, I Want To Live, Back Street* my favorite, Say Goodbye to Maggie Cole. P.S. Valley of the Dolls was great with Susan's performance but her part was smaller compared to the rest. See my review for Valley of the Dolls. Just watch Susan Hayward in this one performance and it's all there-----she had it before this film (her first shot out of the box for a producer who couldn't get anyone to tackle the role---and she made it hers forever. If you're a Susan Hayward fan you know what it's like to be just that----forever. For the talent, the attitude, the independence, the fire, the passion, the dynamic sense of humor-----they're all there and remain in your memories of greatness for as long as film goes thur spockets. Susan Hayward was, is, and always will be "a movie star". Always.

Two Very Good Susan Hayward Movies.......2005-06-19

Susan Hayward was one of the better actresses of the 40's and 50's, and this double feature DVD includes two of her better movies (one of which features a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination).

Tulsa is a solid Eagle-Lion film that places Hayward in Oklahoma during the oil boom of the 20's. Her father is a rancher who is killed while feuding with a local oil drilling company that happens to have a border on his property (he is killed in an accident while trying to tell the drillers to stop polluting his cattle's water supply). When faced with losing the land that her father valued so much Hayward decides if you can't beat 'em, join 'em (and then beat them at their own game). Her transformation from anti-oil drilling advocate to oil baron is actually scripted fairly well, and her performance is believable. The movie is pure Hollywood, but good Hollywood. There are no major surprises, but the movie is written, acted, and directed with such class that the standard Hollywood plot devices come off fairly well. The supporting cast is also quite good, featuring Robert Preston, Pedro Armendariz, and Ed Begley. Tulsa isn't a great movie, but it ends up being a good one that is very entertaining.

Smash-Up is a marginally better movie, and Hayward was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as a singer who gives up her career to be a wife and mother. She is married to another singer whose career takes off just after she has given up her own. She has a hard time dealing with his success, and developes a jealousy towards his female personal assistant. While trying to cope with all of that she falls into alcoholism, and spirals downward until hitting rock bottom. Smash-Up is another well written movie, and Hayward was given a role that perfectly showcases her acting abilities. While not a great movie, this is a very good one, and one of the better melodramas of the day.

The DVD from Acme DVD Works (VCI) is fairly good. The prints of both of these movies seem to be the same prints used by other public domain companies, but the DVD mastering/authoring here seems to be a little better as the movies look sharper and have better contrast here than on some other public domain DVDs. The prints used are not great, however, so neither movie truly looks great on this DVD - this is just the best that I have seen either of them look.

Both of these movies are good, entertaining films that hold up under repeated viewings, and they show why many people prefer the golden age of Hollywood to the movies being made today.
