In detailing Hannibal's revenge plan, the film investigates the psychological implications of witnessing cannibalism to justify Hannibal's insatiable appetite for human flesh. The most interesting aspect of Hannibal Rising—its analytical connections drawn between Hannibal's childhood traumas and his murderous adult obsessions—is also the film's weak point. The links oversimplify Lecter's complex character. For example, though titillating to see flashbacks of Lecter's sister hacked up and boiled while Lecter visits a Parisian meat market, the reference is too obvious. One learns why he excels in his medical school classes dissecting cadavers, and we're given explicit explanation for why he slices off and eats his victims' cheeks. The story only complicates when Hannibal interacts with his sexy Aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li). In the history of cinema there are many great cinematic villains that have terrified movie audiences over the years. Often times they are frightening in appearance or deeds, sometimes they are misunderstood or victims of circumstance, and they can even be so captivating that you can't help but pay attention to their many evil acts. These great villains range from the dreaded Darth Vader, to the slashers known as Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface, or the brilliant evil genius' of the James Bond films, to the most feared psychological villain of all time, Hannibal 'the cannibal' Lecter. Moviemakers lately have felt the need to explain the origins to some of cinema's classic villains from George Lucas' prequel trilogy of 'Star Wars' films, to Leatherface's lackluster origin story in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning", the most recent addition to the list of villains getting the origin treatment would be Hannibal Lecter in the Weinstein Company's adaptation of Thomas Harris' novel, "Hannibal Rising".

"Hannibal Rising" is the origin story of Hannibal Lecter, showing how he went from being an innocent young boy in Lithuania to society's most deadly, cannibalistic serial killer. As a young boy in Lithuania, Hannibal witnessed the deaths of his parents in World War 2, leaving he and his sister Mischa to fend for themselves. Just when Hannibal thought things couldn't get worse, a group of militia men invade their home, taking Hannibal and Mischa hostage. Soon, food begins to become sparse, and the militia gets desperate and chooses to survive by taking Mischa's life for food. Some time after that, grown up and in college, Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel), is mastering every course he takes, and well on his way to earning his doctorate. Little does his professors know that Hannibal hides a dark, deadly secret. In his own time he is obsessively pursuing the men that formed the militia that took his sister's life, and if there's one thing Hannibal intends to do when he finds them, it's take his pound of flesh for their crime.

The decision to make a prequel to the popular Hannibal Lecter trilogy of films seemed like a waste of time and space, simply a way for the studio to just cash in on the character's well-known name. Which left me feeling like this would be a pathetic movie, because more than likely not a single person associated with the previous films would be involved, and for the most part I was right on that count, but there was a glimmer of a chance that this movie would be more than expected. Shortly after the film was greenlit, it was announced that the movie was being written by none other than Thomas Harris, the creator of Hannibal Lecter, based on his novel of the same name that he was in the process of finishing up. With that prospect, I thought that "Hannibal Rising" (at the time the movie was being called "Young Hannibal") just may stand a chance of equaling its predecessors in terms of quality storytelling and acting that is among the best Hollywood has to offer.

Well, as good of a writer Thomas Harris is, or I should say was (his other three books in the Lecter series are great works of fiction), this novel and the screenplay that was based on it are far inferior to anything offered in the other installments. I was disappointed by the movie for several reasons; first I felt the actor chosen to portray young Hannibal was only okay. I understand he was trying to only give hints as to what this character will become later on, and I'll give it to the actor, there were a couple of times that I saw a glimpse of Anthony Hopkins' creepy portrayal seep in, but these were few and far between. For the most part the actor was just flat in his performance and apparently the only expression he really knew how to make was a snarl, he didn't really have any of the nuances that Anthony perfected in this character. Second, it seemed like Hannibal took to cannibalism a little too easily. I understand that he saw his sister suffer at the hands of evil militia men, and seeing that would definitely scar a young child, but when he kills the first soldier and commits his first act of cannibalism, there is no uncertainty or disdain for what he's doing. He simply does the deed, doesn't appear to be bothered by it, in fact he may even have enjoyed it (the movie really doesn't explain this), and moves on in search of the next victim on his list. Which brings me to my third problem with this movie; aside from revenge being his motive for killing the killers of his sister, he doesn't show any further conviction to commit murder. Leaving one to wonder why he continued after achieving his vengeance, did committing all those acts of murder and cannibalism become such an obsession for him outside of revenge that he just felt compelled to do more or what? This was an aspect that wasn't explained, and I felt should have been, especially since this was to be the origin of his evil life and a deep psychological profile into the why of his life of crime. Instead, Thomas Harris' screenplay and novel barely scratched the surface, no doubt because the Weinstein's are hoping to cash in on further installments of prequels, since Hopkins is probably through portraying the character. And my final complaint would have to be that there was no cameo by Anthony Hopkins, the least they could have done was bring him in during the final moments of the film to link it in to the other three. Instead, he gets his revenge, the story ends, and the credits roll. Nothing linking it in to the other films, aside from the name of the lead character.

"Hannibal Rising" is not the worst film ever made, it's actually an average movie, and if it was the first in the series to be made, it may have seemed better, but when comparing it to the other three already in the franchise, it pales in comparison. The other movies contained many psychological aspects to them, especially "The Silence of the Lambs", "Red Dragon" and "Hannibal" did to an extent just not as much, but this film didn't contain any. There was potential, especially given that Hannibal endured a horrific childhood which is the root of his evil, but aside from a few dream sequences we don't get much insight into his character, and the dreams only serve to show us exactly what the militia did to him and his sister. Which is probably where the biggest problem of this film lies, is that in trying to explain why Hannibal is who he is, the makers of the film try to make the audience feel sympathy for him. This is one of modern cinema's greatest movie villains, I don't want to feel sorry for him, I want to see what made him who he is. The filmmakers tried to accomplish the why of the character, but went about it wrong, all they explained was why he was killing the militia, it never explained why he felt the need to continue killing other people that weren't involved in his sister's death. So, because of that the audience feels that his killing is justified, at least in this movie (it's just a really sick brand of justice), and in doing so you sympathize with him. What this all boils down to is that the filmmakers, especially Thomas Harris, really dropped the ball on explaining the origin of Hannibal Lecter, opting simply to give audiences an average revenge tale, just a little gorier than most.

"Hannibal Rising" is unrated containing violence, gore, and language.

Ok, the first movie was shocking and told a gripping tale with a human
dimension, although decidedly opaque. Now it's just regurgitating.
Furthermore, if it has to be unrated to tell a story, forget about it.
There's enough real gore in the world as it is.

Sympathy for the Devil.......2007-06-28

Hannibal Rising suffered severely at the box office because it was implied in the trailers that we'd mainly see a young Hannibal Lecter slashing up the countryside. That kind of marketing certainly didn't lure me into theaters to see it, and--based on its less than $30 million box office gross--much of the public had the same sentiment.

At the end of May, Hannibal Rising gets released on DVD and the memory of the slash-'em-up trailer is still in my head, so I'm not compelled to see it, but 4 weeks later I finally do. And it turns out to be one of the better movies that I've seen this year.

Funny though...I'm not sure that I'd have appreciated Hannibal Rising as much without first seeing 1991's Silence of the Lambs The Silence of the Lambs (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) . Oh, it certainly isn't necessary to see Silence of the Lambs prior to seeing Hannibal Rising. Ironically, seeing Lambs before seeing this prequel just puts a better perspective on the things to come as you watch Lecter in his early years. It did for me anyway.

In Silence of the Lambs you fear Lecter and what he'll do next. In Hannibal Rising you actually find yourself rooting for him with a kind of sympathy. Hannibal Rising is more a story of revenge than it is a story about a serial killer...kind of like a Rambo First Blood (Special Edition) with class.

In Hannibal Rising, you get a great directorial from little known Peter Webber and a terrific performance out of mostly French film actor Gaspard Ulliel. In the beginning sequence Webber went a little overboard with getting us to believe that those who committed the atrocities that ultimately turned Lecter into what he bacame would all be so unified in the decision to commit the atrocities. But the movie really is done well overall and Ulliel played a masterfully diabolical young Hannibal Lecter.

So forget that the movie poster and DVD cover have a picture of Lecter in what looks like that this'll-prevent-you-from-bitng-me mask (turns out that's not what it is at all). And forget that the trailers showed mainly a young, sinister looking Hannibal Lecter as if about to cut someone open. Hannibal Rising ultimately is less gory than you probably think it will be, and less gory than 2001's Hannibal Hannibal . It's not a Horror movie. It's just a very good movie like 1986's Manhunter Manhunter (Restored Director's Cut Divimax Edition) and/or its 2002 remake Red Dragon Red Dragon - Collector's Edition (Widescreen) .

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Hannibal Rising is a classic, as Silence of the Lambs was, but it's very good. Fans of Lambs should take a chance with Hannibal Rising.

The missing story in the Lecter chronicles is his doings in the US leading up to his capture by FBI Agent Will Graham (between Hannibal Rising and Red Dragon). Can't wait.

Out For Revenge Or Made A Monster?.......2007-06-27

I just got done watching "Hannibal Rising" this evening. Hmmmm, not sure what to make of it! I've read and seen "Red Dragon" (which I loved by the way), "Silence of the Lambs", & "Hannibal"....

After reading many negative reviews for both the book and movie versions of "Hannibal Rising", I wasn't sure if I wanted anything to do with the book or the movie.... However, decided to watch the movie for myself and form my own opinion.

Honestly, I don't think "Hannibal Rising" is as bad as everyone has made it out to be. It is suppose to be a prequel, giving us the idea of why Hannibal is the way he is as an adult. I thought "Hannibal Rising" was suspenseful and well acted by the cast members. We see Hannibal as a monster out for revenge for those who killed his younger sister. This is where Hannibal begins to learn and refine his murderous appetite that we later refined when he becomes an adult..... What starts out as revenge turns into gruesome psychopathic behavior.

A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold.

A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton

Uma Thurman, swords, kung-fu,& Quentin Tarrentino ... how can you go wrong?

All grown men have a little boy in their heart that still surfaces every now and again...some fellows more so than others, and it's always so much fun to go back. That is one of the many reasons I enjoy having a son waiting to greet me when I come home from a day of work or a long business trip. On the flip side, Quentin Tarantino gets to go back to being a boy every time he goes to work, and I say good for him.

The Kill Bill movies are a potent effusion of likely all the things Quentin grew up with. Westerns, Kung-Fu movies, Samurai movies and other action films that helped mold and create his robust imagination. Now, he can take the ideas that inspired him as a child and make them even better for the next generation of action-craving bloodthirsty little children. Kill Bill volume 2 is more than a derivitive tribute film, it is an elicitation of massive nostalgia, excentuated keenly by incredible dialogue. Other than function well as a conclusion to the series, it is actually quite different from Kill Bill volume 1 in a few ways. Kill Bill volume 1 contained mostly introductions, followed by bloody action as Beatrix Kiddo took on and took out Vernita Green, O-Ren Ishii, Go-Go Yubari and of course the Crazy 88 (yes, all 88 of them). But in Kill Bill volume 2, I felt like those were merely the supporting villains as Kiddo takes on the more resourceful and profound antagonists in this film; Elle Driver, Budd and of course Bill himself. The sequel, unintentionally perhaps as the two were written and filmed together, possesses more depth than the first part. There is more room for dialogue and that is of course a great thing because outrageous and unlikely dialogue is one of Quentin's strengths, and it serves here to make the characters even more unearthly and super-hero-like then in the first film.

Overall, in volume 2 we get to see how Beatrix learned her skills and we learn more about the relationship between her and Bill. It all leads up to an often criticized climax between Bill and Beatrix. Between the dialogue and David Carradine's performance, the climax helped me enjoy this film a bit more than volume 1. So, if you prefer action and violence you will like the first movie better, but if you just so happen to get caught up in the characters along the way and have an appreciation for the kind of concentrated cultural yearning crossed with mythical level characters that only a Tarantino film can deliver, then Kill Bill volume 2 is a great cap to the two films. For me, simply put, together they make one amazing movie.

Vol 2 is better.......2007-05-27

You've seen vol 1 and thought do I really want to sit through another 2 hours of swords and kung-fu? Well vol 2 is the much better film, so the answer is yes.

Curiously enough although Vol 2 is longer, it seems to have a tighter construction. Some of the chapters are breath-taking, perhaps because they are shorter. The Pai-Mei chapter is simply marvellous. Uma Thurman gets her training with Pai Mei and Bill tells her "remember no sarcasm, no back-talk at least not for the first year or so, gonna have to let him warm up to you"! The Pai Mei chapter ties a lot of things together as well.

Oh yes in vol 2 we get to see Bill for the first time. David Carradine is great, very cool, and occasionally seems to become Kwai Chang Caine again all these years later.

I'd recommend seeing Vol 1 first, although it isn't quite as essential to do this, as it is to watch vol 2 after watching vol 1.

This is fabulous entertainment made by a master film-maker and I strongly recommend it.

kill bill vol. 2.......2007-04-19

i tend to bounce back-and-forth in my mind as to which half of the "kill bill" story i like better. as of writing this review, i'm going to have to go with "vol. 2", perhaps just because it's the one i've seen more recently, but i'm thinking there's more to it than that, so i'll try to get to those points instead.

first off, this really is like splitting hairs, picking which volume is better. now, believe all of those who point out how incredibly different the movies are because they are absolute night and day, but equally good and, more importantly, equally enjoyable.

i guess the one and only edge that i'd have to give "volume 2" is that the character's you get to spend time watching in this half (alongside the Bride, who is just as awesome here as in "vol. 1") are just more in-tune with what i like to see. for example:

-i LOVE the character of Bill, and found the scenes between he and the Bride to be among my favorite ever "ex-lover" face-off's in all cinema. they're is certainly a nastiness to the scenes, but you can SEE the two of them still deeply caring for another, despite themselves, esp. upon the conclussion of their showdown. it is just excellent.

-Michael Madsen's Bud is quite possibly the most difficult character to not like in any movie ever. despite his actions toward the Bride (no more detail. don't want to ruin anything in case you haven't seen it.), you just can't help but kinda feel for the guy. i mean, a dude that has to take junk off his boss, clean up nasty toilet water at a [...]-hole strip bar, then go home to his El Paso trailer to sit alone and listen to Johnny Cash records just kinda screams "feel bad for me" even if we really don't wanna. Bud is awesome, and i like having more of him, so yet another nod to "vol. 2".

-Pei Mei is freakin' awesome, esp. if you love the old kung-fu movies that the "kill bill" series was so lovingly created to replicate. awesome!

-Elle Driver is my absolute favorite member of the divas, so her being more prominant in this half alone makes me love it, love it, love it! just EXACTLY what a "bad guy" bad girl should be, man. all this, and the revelations made during the throwdown between she and the Bride just makes that fight (and the conclussion of said fight) SO much cooler it's just insane!

there is one more character in this movie that i thought was a really neat addition, but to talk about this is to REALLY ruin the movie, so just in case, i'll let you guys decide who you think belongs in this fifth spot.

overall, "kill bill" start-to-finish is outstanding in everyway, but i wanted to yack about "volume 2" today, so that's that. thanks for reading and enjoy!

A Letdown.......2007-04-03

I liked the first volume, despite the fact that it was mostly plotless, because it was very pretty in all its carnage. Volume 2, however, spends a lot of time on a plot that bothered me more and more when I thought about it. In the end, I found it overly simplistic and irritating (trying not to give anything away here). I kept waiting for a twist that never came. While the first volume was mostly fluff, a lot of style with no substance, it was enjoyable as that at least. The second volume has more plot, but this does not end up as more substance. But in the second volume, the time that is spent on the plot takes away from the style and we end up with two and a half hours which are not very enjoyable.

Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Vol. 1 is trash for connoisseurs. While watching the Kill Bill movies, one word continuously and irresistibly comes to mind: cool. Scenes are shot from cool angles, flush with cool colors, at cool speeds, with cool characters that communicate in cool dialogues, all set to the tone of cool music.

Like the Godfathers I&II, Kill Bill immediately jumps right into the plot's heart. Initially mysterious elements are then illuminated as the story repeatedly sidles back through each character's past.

Uma Thurman's character avenges her former assassin squad colleagues one-by-one as payback for their having tried to murder her on the eve of her wedding. Her brutal violence and feverous hatred make her a textbook anti-hero character similar to Clint Eastwood's "man with no name" persona in old Sergio Leone Westerns.

With so many other movies featuring fight scenes, it's not easy to produce ones that hold the viewer's interest; however, Kill Bill's do because they blend the right combination of novelty, violence, creativity, suspense, and general eye-pleasingness.

If you're worried about violence, you shouldn't let that deter you from watching this series. There are some bloody parts, no doubt; however, perhaps because the violence is seemingly deserved, just twisted enough to be more comical than gross, or somehow alluringly cool, it doesn't seem quite as bad as it should.

If you want to see a cool movie, see this one.

After reading the other reviews, good and bad, I just decided to chime in with my two cents.

To be quite honest, I love this movie. Tarantino must have had an amazing time making it, and that shows up in the final product. It's just fun to watch. It introduces those of us who aren't very familiar with the kung-fu genre to it and makes us want to go watch a bunch of them. Volume 2 does the same with spaghetti westerns. These movies are like a crash course in Grindhouse-type cinema. I noticed one reviewer who negatively critiqued the film commented on the black and white photography during the fight scene-Quentin had to do that to get it past the MPAA; the Japanese version is all color. Anyway, the movie was a blast, and if you can stop being a snooty cinephile for about 2 hours, you should have a blast too.

Brilliant, Not For Everyone However.......2007-05-29

My first viewing of this volume in the Kill Bill saga occurred at two in the morning, as I suffered from severe insomnia. I was desperate, hoping that it would help me drift off. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, this film did anything but. The action, cinematography, and witty script blew me away; I loved it. The next day, however, I was surprised to learn that many people I knew did not feel the same way as I did regarding this flick. Willing to form a better opinion of the movie and shrugging the fact that I loved it off to simply being overtired, I watched it again.

I still loved it. And herein was where I realized that this film is not for everyone. As it is a homage film, a tribute to Spaghetti Westerns and Kung-Fu flicks, one must look from this perspective. I myself enjoy these genres of film and lapped up Tarantino's unique and witty take on them. It is apparent (as it is in most of his work) that he is a great fan as well.

As mentioned numerous times by others, there is gore abound here. Ridiculous violence, blood spurting everywhere, and bodies flying constantly. But somehow Mr. Tarantino, and you may call him sick or twisted for it, made all the slicing and dicing humorous and never too serious, witty lines and funny visuals all the way through. True cinematic genius in my book.

On the surface it looks like a senselessly violent revenge movie, but underneath it is far more. Like most of Tarantino's films, Kill Bill is riddled with culture references and contains a wonderfully varied soundtrack; absolute joy for the pop culture buff. It is a cleverly written, and the wonderful talent of all involved is clearly exhibited.

On to the acting, Uma Thurman is a true standout. Prior to this film I hadn't thought much of her, even believing her to be overrated. This one role of hers changed my opinion completely. Thurman is brilliant as "The Bride"; her piercing eyes and intense persona portray a woman out for revenge amazingly. Lucy Liu is also impressive as a cold Yakuza headlady, and Vivica A. Fox and Daryl Hannah both provide great supporting roles as well.

Overall this film is most definitely not something that everyone will go for- in fact, most will find it odd for the first ten minutes or so, but stick with it. This film is one of the most brilliant in recent years, even though it might not hit you with its depth right away. Highly recommended.

**By the way, make sure to buy Volume 2 along with your purchase of Volume 1- the films were intended to be one but due to time constraints two were made, as you see them now. It will add for a more complete viewing experience, not to mention the cliffhanger at the end of the first.

"BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON" is the most touching, humanizing, and funny slasher flick / homage to slasher flicks ever crafted. That said, it also delivers the bloody goods in a tradition befitting its unkillable, oft-returning predecessors.

I smiled throughout the entire thing.

Soooo many slasher films, from "SCREAM" and its imitative ilk on down, have pulled the whole self-reflexive trick once too often, disrespecting the masked psycho tradition... in short, many supposed 'tributes' to the sub-genre have taken cheap shots at the 'retro' factor of slasher movies, all for the sake of making themselves appear smarter, more 'hip' and 'now'. But for the multitudes horror geeks who have grown up watching these favorites at sleepover parties and on late-nite cable, counting every kill, the aforementioned approach is insulting. Sure, films (horror and otherwise) have to progress as times change, but disregard for the intelligence and devotion of fans of the slasher cinema Golden Age (that'd be the '80s, btw) is simply unnecessary, and should be considered punishable by a machete to the head... *ahem* ... metaphorically, that is.

"BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON" recognizes this, and puts middle-aged fanboy, 'Leslie', smack dab in the middle of a pseudo-world wherein the antics of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, et al., are NOT movie fantasies, but instead REAL OCCURRENCES. In this parallel universe, being a masked psycho is an actual freelance career, albeit an underground one. And as Leslie's hopes and dreams of making it in 'the biz' are chronicled, faux-documentary style, by a reluctant and uninitiated camera crew, the magic of this approach truly unfolds. Think 'American Idol' meets "FRIDAY THE 13TH". "BEHIND THE MASK..." deals with the material in a hilarious fashion, as Leslie excitedly and charmingly walks his interviewers thru the set-up of his performance, explaining in detail how he will sabotage windows, tree-branches, flashlights, potential weapons his victims might use, etc., as well as outlining his victim-selection, training regimen (lots of cardio), and the general timeline of events leading up to what he (and we?) hopes will be his big night of carnage. Throughout this doc (which feels amazingly legit and convincing, like something you'd see on IFC or Bravo), Leslie also takes stabs at the well-known sexual subtext of slasher flicks, using an uproariously colorful depiction of feminine empowerment.

The other thing "BEHIND THE MASK..." gets just right is the stereotypical 'psychiatrist' character (referred to here in horror industry terms as an 'Ahab'), and in this case depicted by slasher-legend Robert Englund, playing the Dr. Loomis-like pursuer of Leslie. The documentary approach, which feels real and emotional in most spots, gives way for the film's final act, which is more straightforward (but still satisfying) horror fare, as this turns into the full-scale slaughter Leslie worked so diligently for. But the psychiatrist character ties the mysterious 'real life' side of Leslie firmly to the more conventional, cinematic masked madman side, and for this reason the tonal shift from fake documentary to out & out slasher flick is not jarring at all, but quite natural.

There are so many examples of the great winks and nods this flick makes to the fans, but to sit here and point 'em all out would ruin it. If you're a fan of the genre, you gotta see this, end of story. "BEHIND THE MASK..." is an in-joke for the faithful, and is done from a fresh angle that attempts mightily, all by itself, to resurrect the good times these kinds of movies used to provide. It's a love letter to the stalk-&-slash canon of yore, and there's some great, clever stuff in here that doesn't ever have to sink to denigrating the tradition of the beloved horror classics referenced.

"Behind The Mask(The Rise Of Leslie Vernon)" is by far one of the most creative horror/comedies ever thought up. Even better...it was executed beautifully! Producer/Director and co-writer Scott Glosserman has delivered a wickedly clever treat for us true horror fans. To the naked eye maybe not, but any self-respecting horror fan can clearly see that there are more layers to this flick than there are on an onion. The hints,suprises and inside jokes are a plenty throughout and the idea of starting from behind the mask when getting to know a future horror icon is nothing short of brilliant! The scares and laughs are perfectly balanced and the acting is quite good from most if not all parties especially Nathan Baesel as(Leslie Vernon) this guy down-right steals the show from the start. The end of the end is excellent and just leaves me wanting more from this psycho killer behind the mask(in a great way).

Here we get a look at Leslie Vernon a 26yr.old unstoppable
killer with a sense of charm and wit. You follow him from

love this movie or hate it(some of my friends did???)I
thought it was VERY funny at times and loved the whole
documentary feel of it.Nathan gives a WILL FARREL approach
at times to this movie which does not hurt the film at all

For the true horror fan.......2007-07-02

This movie gets horrible reviews by people who do not appreciate horror movies. I grew up with the slashers (Halloween, Friday the 13th, TCM). Knowing that, it's cool to see a movie where those guys were real, and it's an important key to society to have a killer. How they shoot the movie was beyond great. The film holds true to the comedy/mockumentary that it tries to reach, but also sticks true to horror, given there are a few scenes that are jumpy. The mask is creepy, too! Watch this is you appreciate everything the 80s spewed out at us.

I love my horror movies. Straight to the point stalker/slasher/murderer/hauntings, etc., but this documentory type horror movie was totally boring. I think the plot of the story was stupid and then unfolding the movie was even worse. Don't waste your time buying this one.

A Fantastic Movie........2007-06-16

This film is really one of the best action films Ive ever seen. It is truly fun to watch, even if you watch it over and over again. I was most surprised by Geena Davis. Her performance is actually very good as an action star. Her action and her acting were both done extremely well. Then theres Samuel L. Jackson. God, hes cool in this film. He has so many lines that are largely funny and not corny. Him and Geena have a good chemistry on screen that really makes the movie work. The action is pretty much non stop. Those action scenes are shot very nicely and they look awesome. This movie most certainly isnt meant to be taken seriously and is meant to have fun watching. It succeeds in doing so. Its a great little action film that will keep you entertained even if you watch it a dozen of times.

I heard that this movie tanked at the US box office and i'm not sure why because its far better than many of the "blockbusters".
I lived in Singapore and it just ran and ran there in a couple of theaters.

Renny Harlin was married to Gena Davis at the time and it all seemed a bit incestuous and it followed the record breaking disaster that was "Cutthroat Island" so I guess nobody in the "biz" wanted to go near it.

This however is a good movie. It flows well the actions scenes are great and Samuel Jackson is wonderful. I'd never heard of him but Craig Bierko makes a great villain and I cant see why he hasnt done more. Yes there are plot holes but no more than the average Tarantino movie.

I would rather sit through a rerun of of this than have to watch Spiderman 3 ever again.

About Twin Towers.......2007-04-22

I saw this movie and it held my attention from the beginning, as well. But, I was very surprised about the statement made about blowing up the Twin Towers and blaming it on the Muslims.
Does anyone remember that? It was near the middle of the movie. Interesting, because the movie was made during the mid-90's and the Towers were actually blown up and it was blamed on Muslims.

One Great Action Movie.......2007-02-11

This movie is over the top, smartly written, and perfectly made. It is Renny Harlin's masterpiece, and my favorite Samuel Jackson movie. The screenplay by Shane Black is complex and full of smart, funny dialog. The pairing of Davis and Jackson is very enjoyable, and the action scenes are some of the best ever in action movie history. Unrealistic? Yes. One of those movies you can watch over and over and never get sick of it? To me, yes. Harlin is a brilliant director when given the decent material he needs to work with; This is one of his most shining moments. Great ensemble cast, cinematography, and sounds really great loud. Love the scene w/Jackson on Larry King. That is some funny stuff. A must for every action movie fan.

Great movie--Lousy DVD transfer.......2007-01-18

I really like this movie. Geena Davis has never been cuter, and Samuel L. Jackson has never been seedier. I really enjoyed this movie in the theater and later on tape.

Then I bought the DVD. And it stinks. It is the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. Every chapter transition pixellates during the transition. It hurts my eyes to watch it. I finally took the DVD out after 15 or 20 minutes. I've never seen a DVD do this, except for poorly-burned copies of old, scratched-up DVDs. The only redeeming factor is that I only paid $3 for it from another retailer when purchased at the same time as SOAP.

I've never seen a DVD do this. Stay away from this cheaply-made DVD.

Mr. Cusack takes us for a wild ride in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The man is simply trying to attend his High School reunion. But, he has a few issues to deal with while he's there...I'll let you find out for yourself! Get it at a good price - then enjoy it! Three stars!!

Hysterically funny perspective on transitioning from high school to adulthood. John Cusack delivers a terrific performance as does Minnie Driver and Joan Cusack.

Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-06

Sharp wit combined with excellent delivery make Grosse Pointe one of my favorite movies. It's always interesting when the protagonist is such an aweful person, yet seems like a hero. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes dry humor and has a tolerance for the depths of human monstrosity.

Gotta be the funniest, wittiest, fastest comedy out there. I can't stand not to watch this one. I probably see it twice a year. It's that good. Every line is good, every scene is good. Never predictable, never dull or formulaic, despite being an outgrowth of Cusack's prestigious 1980's lexicon of light comedies.

This was one of my favorite movies of the 90s. If you don't like the movie, definately get the soundtrack because it is by far one of the best compilations of underground 80s alternative I've ever heard, and it really carries the movie along well.

I give it five stars because it was more scary than silince of the lambs. IT WAS CREEPY, PLOT WAS BEST SO FAR IN SERIES FOR A PRESEQUOEL. NOT SLAPPED TOGETHIR BUT ALMOST AS SAME AS THE BOOK I READ. MOVIE DIRECTIOR DID A GREAT JOB ON REASEARCH ON THE BOOK. ONLY A COPLE SCENES IN THE BOOK WERE TAKEN OUT OF THE MOVIE.

Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. John Carpenter's first and best entry in a long series, this movie gives the slasher pic a good name (that is, until you sit through all those pale re-treads). This lean feature works because it's both original and daringly basic: Laurie is a young teenage girl up against a monster, with only her wits and her two feet to protect her from the wrong end of a large butcher knife. Will Laurie and her young charges make it to Thanksgiving? You'll remain on the edge of your seat finding out.

I just picked up this movie the other day and i have been a huge fan of the halloween series all my life and just never had the original. I never knew how much I lovede it until yesturday. This movie is awsome and John Carpenter and Debra Hill are genuises. Half the movie is shot in mid day and is still as scary as if was shot in night.This is Jamie lee curtis best film and does a great job in it. I also love Michael is this one the way he walks and such. Anyway pick up this movie it's awsome.

When John Carpenter gave form to "The Shape", aka Michael Myers, he crafted a chilling story of suspense around this murderer. Before the stupid "sister storyline", the attempt at turning Myers into some supernatural bogeyman, or the reboot which only tarnished the original further (Sorry, but Jamie Lee has definitely lost what acting skills she once had), there was the tale of a child who simply was...evil. He came home on Halloween night to relive the horror of his first murder. He was not a man. He was, pure and simply, evil. Now why did we need to know more than that?

The oldest sister of all psycho-thrillers: a modern revision of the boogeyman's myth shot in 1978 by John Carpenter, probably the only horror movies artisan still in action. Although many of the rudiments of psycho movies can be already find in the first italian giallos and, of course, in Hitchcock's "Psycho", its very calculated prologue contains as if it was a manual all the leit-motives of the genre: the use of the subjective camera and the steadycam for supporting the suspense scenes; atmospherical travellings; obssessive and disturbing sound effects and cold-blood murders. Proving once more that to suggest is more effective than to resort to explicit shots, and looking for a pure horror show without gratuitous violence Carpenter reinvents wisely through the tradition in this very smart and stylised horror classic: for example, the suggestion that colour white can hold a devilish connotation is already in Edgar Poe's " The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". Donald Pleasance plays the psychiatrist Dr. Loomis, a sort of modern Van Helsing and the man who better knows the evil nature of his patient Michael Myers, recently escaped from the asylum Dr.Loomis rules.

Another chance to recover this indisputable classic. Widescreen edition.
