Product Description

Newcomer Ariyan Johnson delivers a critically acclaimed performance as a spirited Brooklyn teenager coping with life in the projects, and sustained by her fierce desire to go to college and become a doctor. Just Another Girl On The I.R.T. - the writing and directorial debut of up-and-coming black woman filmmaker Leslie Harris- is a sharp, sassy blend of comedy and drama in the tradition of Spike Lee that speaks with a fresh new voice all its own.

    Format: DVD MOVIE

    Amazon.com

Sassy, in-your-face account of an intelligent, flippant Brooklyn girl who lives in the projects and dreams of college. Ariyan Johnson is captivating as the teen with attitude and a brain, but she cannot decide which should guide her. She wants a better life but finds herself taking a very hard road. First-time writer/director Leslie Harris put together a sharp, realistic, very funny account of life for a young black woman. It is rough around the edges, however, and is definitely hampered by the minuscule budget. This may not always be pretty, but it is consistently interesting. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars TOUCHING AND INSPIRING MOVIE!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-11

Do not buy this movie unless you are ready for a deep moving documentary! My mom rented this movie for me one night several years ago when I was a teenager living in NY. After viewing the movie I quickly ordered it from Blockbuster on VHS. I cried several times while watching this movie not because it's sad but because it touched me. It had everything a good movie should have laughter, sadness, excitement, happiness and most importantly LOVE! I give this movie 10 stars!!! :) I can't wait to buy this movie on DVD! It is a very inspiring story and there is never a dull moment. It is a very well done independent film that speaks to anyone who has gone through any kind of struggles in life. This movie is about achieving your dreams and reaching your goals despite hurdles and mountains that come in your way. It also shows growth and maturity in the life of a young woman. I highly recommend this movie to everyone especially youth and teens.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2006-04-15

I first saw this movie 10 years ago, I was happy to see it made it to dvd. This a great movie to watch with your teenagers. To bad there aren't more movies like this one. Chantel was a typical teenager who had alot of dreams to become a doctor but she got pregnant. This movie really sends a message to parents with young daughter Chantel's age. We really need to talk to our children, instead of young girls doing what Chantel did they can go to there parents to talk about it.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie, I wish it had full nudity.......2005-10-23

I saw this movie only once ten years ago and fell in love with it. I thought it was well acted and I could relate to Chantell's character. I love the music and I just loved the movie I knew every word by heart. All the things this girl goes through. Chantell deals with trying to live a life of her own but also having to take responsibility for her family life as well. She wanted her baby to be thrown in the trash. She always talks about going to college but with her additude she won't go anywhere.

    It's ashamed that Ariyan A. Johnson is a forgotten about actress, she's a wash-up has-been.

4 out of 5 stars Something to think about.......2004-06-09

This movie really made you open your eyes and think about the consequences of sex. I saw it 10 years ago when I was sixteen and the movie really made me think twice about having sex. I just wish someone would make a movie like that in 2004 about
HIV/AIDS since people in the African-American community don't believe it can happen to them.

5 out of 5 stars This is a movie all young girls should see.......2004-05-27

This movie was a great movie and in showing how young african-amercian girls try to live in the fast-lane and not think about the consequences that come with that lifestyle. Although this movie is older, it surely depics what's going on in present day society. I strongly reccommand this movie.

    Description

Luis Buñuel's final film explodes with eroticism, bringing full circle the director's lifelong preoccupation with the darker side of desire. Buñuel regular Fernando Rey plays Mathieu, an urbane widower, tortured by his lust for the elusive Conchita. With subversive flare, Buñuel uses two different actresses in the lead- Carole Bouquet, a sophisticated French beauty, and Angela Molina, a Spanish coquette. Drawn from Pierre Louÿs' 1898 novel, "La Femme et le Pantin," That Obscure Object of Desire is a dizzying game of sexual politics punctuated by a terror that harkens back to Buñuel's brilliant surrealistic beginnings.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars No fool like an old fool.......2007-04-11

Carole Bouquet is the thinner Conchita who is somewhat severe. Angela Molina is the one who dances and seems more natural.

Jean-Claude Carriere wrote the script. He may be the greatest screenwriter of all time. He has over a hundred credits and some of them are among the best movies ever made. Here's a brief list from those that I have seen: The Ogre (1996), Valmont (1989), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), Diary of a Chambermaid (1964).

There's some symbolism in Cet obscur objet du desir. Sometimes Mathieu (Fernando Rey) carries around an old gunny sack. We find out what's in it in the final scene. It represents Conchita's virginity. The terrorists in the background seem rather contemporary although this movie is from 1977. Mathieu is rich and therefore represents the established European society. Conchita and her friends represent the underclass. Both Mathieu and Conchita are really character types. He is the masher, the rake who is always working on a new conquest, although he is somewhat naive. She is the tease who uses her wiles to get what she can from him. Bunuel plays this ancient theme as a burlesque, exaggerating her coyness and his foolishness. The ending may suggest that in some way he has won, or more likely that they are still at a standoff, even while the terrorists escalate the bombings.

The question of why there are two actresses playing Conchita has more to do with Maria Schneider, who originally was cast in the role, but left because of the nudity or because Conchita's character was too contrary, than it has to do with any plot or symbolic necessity. On the other hand, since she is that "obscure object of desire" (which really should be that "unobtainable object of desire"), and because Bunuel wanted to emphasize that Mathieu's desire for her had nothing to do with her personally, he used two actresses and made it clear that Mathieu didn't notice the difference! A bit of absurdity here, but Bunuel is comfortable with absurdity.

All in all an interesting treatment of an ancient theme, but not one of Bunuel's best, even though it was his last at age 77.

    4 out of 5 stars Smack me, won't you?.......2006-10-08

This is a very well made film. The director is excellent. The only complaint I have is with the ending. The relationship between the two leading characters isn't clarified enough.

Is the young woman sincere in her affection for her older man? Yes. No. Yes. Definitely not, she's just playing him for what she can get, and is in love with a younger man. No wait, yes she loves him. Wait, hold on, why is she walking away?

The older man is annoying, an odd hero in that we don't want him to get what he wants, we want him to fail, because he is rich, stuck up, without redeeming social value.

The young girl tells him that he knows nothing about women. It seems that what she really wants is to be dominated and smacked. But no, maybe that's not what she wants. Well, yes, it seems that is what she wants.

Interspersed in all this comic ambiguity, we are treated to random acts of terrorism. Blooey! Another rich pig dead. When will it be our hero's turn to be the dead rich pig? At the end of the movie, maybe? He sure is made uncomfortable by the reports of terrorism. It seems that terrorism is the natural reaction, by the mobilized lower class, to the entrenched and despicable upper class.

This film is very French. It has enough quality in its manufacture to get five stars, but it fizzles away at the very end, leaving me wondering just what the hell was happening with our loving couple's relationship before it was time to bring down the curtain on them.

Smack me, won't you? I've given you every reason to. Oww. Good, now I know you love me.

2 out of 5 stars Disgusting and pointless........2006-03-19

"Listen, Bunuel. What are we going to do? The witch has quit. Says: too much nudity. Who does she think she is - Mother Theresa?"

"I am a little busy, JP (Quiet, babe! Can't you see? I am talking to my producer here!). Just get another broad for the role: anybody, only with a good front."

"But, Maestro! We'd have to re-shoot half of the movie. Fernando is already talking of another engagement. In any event, with his rate if we use him again, it will be twenty years before we see any money from this flick. We might as well scrap the whole thing."

"Don't worry, JP. We'll keep shooting as if nothing happened. That's what being Great Director all about. They are morons, or why you think anyone would pay cash to see such garbage. Most won't even notice that the face is different, and those who do, will find a good explanation for it. Subliminal, surreal, existential, women are alike - all that nonsense, you know. Relax and have a drink."

3 out of 5 stars Sexual Infatuation amidst a World gone Mad.......2006-02-18

A rich gentleman becomes infatuated with his beautiful maid - Conchita - and pursues her all over Europe. Her ploy is to tease him relentlessly without giving in, and he cannot accept being rejected...so the chase continues and continues. . Meanwhile, Europe is swept into disaster through acts of terrorism from both the far right and the far left - orchestrated by the Revolutionary Army of Jesus Christ. But these real events seem irrelevant in the man's obsession with his own passions.

I simply did not buy Bunel's attempt to switch the women actresses between two individuals. First of all Carole Bouquet is stunning in this film - one of the most gorgeous females alive - so her double always appears pale beside her.

In conclusion, there are far superior films about a man's relenteless obsession with a beautiful woman. In drama I would select "Of Human Bondage". In comedy, "Iris Blonde."

    3 out of 5 stars 2 Chicks, 1 Fernando Rey.......2005-11-01

Belle D' Jour introduced me to Luis Bunuel. Now TOOOD continues this dark exploration of the European psyche. The women are innocent and vixen at once. Perhaps that is why Bunuel used two women to play the same part. I must say he almost got away with it seamlessly for my "lovely one" swore it was the same woman, but I got it by the time the flamingo nude scene appears. We were also shocked by the caresses of the chest scene, which in commercial film is rare today although in the late sixties, seventies, and part of the eighties, the obligatory nude love scene on American screens were mandatory. That's gone. Now we have blood splattering gratuitous violence.

My only objection to this film is the insertion of cheesy terrorist scenes. I don't know if these silly explosions, the unrealistic destruction of automobiles were limited by budget constraints, or if this was a campy outing of those funny terrorists we have come to know so well over the last forty years.

The desperate Fernando Rey, the older, richer, still amorous, over-the-hill desires his eighteen-year-old Conchita and the game begins. An old story stroked for the amusement of the audience.

A pregnant, idealistic teen (Jena Malone, Saved!) finds that her chaotic trailer-park existence conflicts with her dreams of having the perfect family in this quirky dark comedy. After being rejected by her jerk boyfriend (Erik von Detten), Rena Grubb (Malone) looks for a way out of her turbulent teenage existence. Pinning all her hopes on her dad (Chris Mulkey) ? who was sent up the river for murder seven years ago ? Rena convinces her mom (Michelle Forbes) to drag the whole family to the annual prison picnic. Here, against a backdrop of sack races, barbed wire and conjugal trailers, Rena finally comes to terms with her inmate father and her dreams for the future.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good film.......2007-06-12

I've been a fan of Jena Malone since she started acting. I wasn't expecting too much of this film, I didn't even see it make a theatrical release anywhere near hear but I bought it because she's in it and the majority of her movies are well worth watching. We were surprised. I and my 75 year old mom watched this together and completely enjoyed it. Well done, well acted, well written. It's dark. It's funny. It'll make you think. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful indie flick........2005-12-08

Dysfunctional, Open-Minded, and down right humorous describes "Confessions of an American Girl". Jena Malone (Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Stepmom) shines in this film, just like she always does. Two things that will always go together are Jena Malone & an Indie/Black Comedy. But I'll have to admit some of the best acting in this film was that of Brad Renfro (The Client). He plays a 'closet' homosexual, and the obvious reason he hides it is because of his "tough as nails" prison father.

A lot of the characters in this film are like a lot of people you know & see in real life. And thought most label them as poor, white trash...You discover in "COAG" that they have passionate souls too.

Also, on another note..Clifton Collins, Jr. was one of the best things in this film, and one of the funniest too. So, buy it, rent it..do what you must. It's great!

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-12-02

The story is interesting and the characterare querky. Malone is great. I really enjoyed this different movie. Something that Hollywood couldnt and wouldnt put out.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Cool.......2005-07-29

Highly Recommended as an Example of How to Stage and Sequence a Complex Scene.

If you like black comedy, you should enjoy "Confessions of an American Girl". Rena (Jena Malone) is the embodiment of that old cartoon where the guy is sitting on the ground with a noose around his neck and a broken rope in his hand; captioned "some people can't do anything right". Rena lives in a mobile home with her somewhat "strange" family, is suicide challenged, is pregnant by a guy who doesn't want to be seen in public with her, and blames it all on the unfair eight year absence of her loving father, who is in prison for murder. Her dim idealic memories of her father are somewhat biased.

The highway and its exit ramps are metaphors for her life and her desire to end her life. The film is not quite as good as "Ghost World" but has much the same tone and feel.

Alicia Witt plays Rena's half-sister. Because Malone and Witt are arguably the most intelligent actresses in Hollywood, you immediately wonder about the wisdom of casting them as moronic trailer trash. But Malone has a special talent for playing this kind of "slack-jawed" character and Witt's standard sarcastic teen character works fine even in this environment. Their scenes together are the best ones in the film; with their reconciliation scene toward the end especially good.

Brad Renfro does a good job as Rena brother, O-Lon Jones (remember the waitress in Seinfeld's "Bubble Boy" episode) is excellent in a small role and Clifton Collins Jr. is great as Buddy, the prison trustee, who quickly sizes up the situation and sets the forces of change in motion.

While "American Girl" is an above average film, its main scene (the picnic at the prison which actually takes up the majority of the film) pushes it into cinema classic territory. This scene is an example of the way storytelling should be done, and the pacing is absolutely inspired. It is staged perfectly as Buddy orchestrates a sequence of revelations that changes all four visiting family members. Even if you hate the subject of this film it is worth watching just to see how wonderfully they manage this climatic scene. The disasterous visit over, the family leaves the prison with the statement "it went better than it could have".

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for a courageous movie!.......2005-03-17

At first this movie seemed trite, but less than halfway into it, it became something much more. An honest look at a dysfunctional and insecure girl, her older and just downright mean half sister, her brother John, who is the calmest and simplest character ( with a dark secret ) in the movie. Her hardworking single mother ( played superbly by Michelle Forbes ) and her over the top father sent away to prison for two consecutive life terms for murder.
Jena Malone's character dreams of seeing her father, knowing him and making him proud right at the time that she realizes she is pregnant.
In one day at the annual prison picnic ( do these things actually exist? How scary!! ) the family reunites reluctantly except Rena ( Malone ). What follows therafter are numerous amounts of surprises and several laugh out loud moments. While some of this movie may be funny, this is certainly a more serious film that deals with coming of age, the longing that comes with having an absent father in a young persons life, suicide, depression, and coming to terms with one's reality and not just the dream they want.
I was amazed at how good this movie actually was. The acting by all cast members is really great and the story is not boring, however shocking or disturbing it may be, it is simply real. Possibly someone else's reality which makes it all the more interesting.

    1 out of 5 stars So bad it's funny!.......2004-09-20

Here we have another cheap horror picture with a predictable ending about a mad killer who dons a mask and runs loose killing college coeds. So, what else is new?

Flat, emotionless, and wooden. These are only a few of the words I can come up with to describe whatever it was that the players in this flick were trying to pull off. The acting was so bad, in fact, that I think it gives lousy acting a bad rap. Such films are good to watch once in a while, I suppose, for research. That is, so that one can see just how bad bad acting can get. It can make one appreciate the slightly better films a little bit more. Flicks like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Halloween" look like "Gone With The Wind" in comparison to this crap. It deserves the one star, however, for the simple fact that it kept me laughing my tail-end off the whole way through. It was clearly intended to be serious, and frightening, but came off as just being a comedy of moviemaking errors.

4 out of 5 stars Somber and simple.......2006-08-08

Writer director, Cacoyannis has done numerous films and probably the most popular is the 50's movie, Zorba the Greek which starred Anthony Quinn.

This black and white 1956 Greek film tells the story of a family two adult children, Marina, a beautiful young woman, her brother Mitso, now unemployed, and the mother, who became a widow at 32. The father was a merchant with wealth and now, the family's home is in disrepair and they are hounded by shame, hate and death, and more recently toward the mother, who is looked upon as a [...], simply because she needs love and affection too.

When two men arrive from Athens for relaxation and the family rents the upstairs to the men, and the writer, also known as a playboy, falls for Marina. The young men in the community, mostly strapping handsome men, view Marina as a stuck-up who doesn't talk to anyone. We learn from the past that Christo was in love with Mariana before, but he used her plain-looking sister to get to Marina and that sister drowned by the hurt. Christo and his buddies taunt her and her family and for laughs, they play a trick on the man from Athens who is in love with her. The cruel trick goes awry with devastating results.

With color, the views in Greece would be gorgeous. Don't expect a really memorable film, it is somber and simple. No other special features come with the DVD. ...MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars michael cacoyannis: A girl in Black.......2005-08-03

In this film two Athenians, an architect and a novelist, on holiday in a Greek island, are confronted with an archaic society merciless in the double standards it applies to men and women it sees as sexual offenders, in this case a love-starved widow and her bragging seducer. The novelist's wooing of the widow's daughter (the Girl in Black) stirs up trouble with the girl's rejected suitor, and their rivalry leads to a situation of almost unbearable suspense and a tragedy that neither could have foreseen. The harsh world of the island, beautifuly and appropriately filmed in stark black and white under the relentless glare of the Mediterranean sun, forms the backdrop to a tale of extreme cruelty mitigated only by the empathy that is one of Cacoyannis's most appealing characteristics. His direction is largely responsible for the success this magnificent film enjoyed in its day, as is the photography of Walter Lassally, who performed prodigies of skill with the one camera that was apparently allotted to him for this low-cost film made entirely on location. The director is well served by a trio of sensitive actors, Dimitri Horn, George Foundas and, last but not least, the poignantly beautiful Ellie Lambetti, who plays the title role.

Despite the archaism of the society it depicts, "A Girl in Black" has lost none of its interest today and it is hard to explain why this masterpiece is not better known.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece..........2002-06-19

This low-budget little film received international acclaim due to it's excellent acting and haunting & simple photography. The film is set on the island of Hydra and tells a tragic love story.
There's never been anyone like Ellie Lambeti since, this is a true Gem.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly magical and emotional.......2002-06-01

The Girl in Black "reveals Elli Lambetti as an actress of truly tragic stature." The story of a young Athenian writer on holiday who falls in love with a girl of impoverished gentility and is unable to respond to her. A disaster provoked by spiteful peasants shocks him into a new awareness of his own involvement in life. The film has a simplicity and a vibrancy that make it stand out from even the best of foreign films.

5 out of 5 stars The best Greek movie ever made.......2000-07-14

This is the best Greek movie ever made. It' so touching and cultural.
