A great-looking, well-acted Western in the old-school tradition, Seraphim Falls is definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. There's nothing really new here (which explains why it played only briefly in theaters), and more than a few critics noted its obvious similarities to Clint Eastwood's classic The Outlaw Josey Wales. Still, you have to admire director and cowriter David Von Ancken (a 10-year TV veteran making his feature debut) for delivering an engrossing post-Civil War revenge story (cowritten with Abby Everett Jacques) that isn't hobbled by its overly familiar plotting. Blessed by the exquisite cinematography of John Toll (whose credits include The Thin Red Line, Almost Famous and The Last Samurai) and bolstered by a lush but unobtrusive score by Harry Gregson-Williams, this prestigious production begins very well indeed, with a wintry manhunt in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, circa 1868. Former Union captain Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is being tracked by a seemingly brutal pursuer named Carver (Liam Neeson) whose four-man posse (including veteran character actors Ed Lauter and Michael Wincott) is soon reduced to two.

As the manhunt continues, Brosnan and Neeson make the most of minimal dialogue, and flashbacks give us hints about the tragic event that set this plot in motion. It's a simple, elemental tale of justice in the wilderness, with occasional quirks like a snake-oil vendor (Anjelica Huston) who appears literally out of nowhere, and a top-hatted Indian (Wes Studi) who gives the film a slight, mystical air of mystery. And while a more daring director might have opted for a more powerful visual style, there's something to be said for Von Ancken's straightforward approach, perfectly matched by Toll's breathtaking landscapes, shot on location in Oregon and New Mexico and ranging from raging rivers to sun-baked desert flats. None of this makes Seraphim Falls a particularly exceptional movie, but with a fine cast that also includes such familiar faces as Angie Harmon, Tom Noonan, Xander Berkeley, and Kevin J. O'Connor, there's ample reward in a film that doesn't pretend to be anything more than a respectable entry in its genre. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Classic Western .......2007-07-04

Solid classic western from begining to end. Especially the surreal ending and the anti-war mesage.
Both men are at the top of their acting games. This is the best western I have watched in ten years.

3 out of 5 stars Echoes of Josey Wales...but different.......2007-06-29

This is an interesting and watchable movie, well acted and photographed.
It has a basic story line that strongly borrows from "The Outlaw Josey Wales", but the screenplay contains enough variations on the hunter vs. hunted theme to mark it as a different film from Eastwood's.

My only real complaint about it is that it begins strongly , in a realistic fashion, continues in this manner through most of its length, but then begins to unwind into something mystical and surreal as the end approaches. Basically, it starts to get weird. It's like the director decided to take a side trip through the Twilight Zone to reach his end credits.

It could be argued that the desert conclusion puts the two adversaries (Brosnan and Neeson) in a situation where the intense heat and lack of water makes them hallucinate and see and hear things wrongly: perceptions askew. Maybe. But the fact remains that from Wes Studi's appearance onward this movie starts going a bit wonky. And is the Angelica Huston character actually there at all? Is "she" real? Or is "she" the Devil? You almost feel the production is taking on a Rod Serling morality play form...wrapped in metaphor...there at the end.

"Seraphim Falls" left this reviewer largely unsatisfied with its ending. but mostly pleased with the 85% of it preceeding that.

Give it a shot. Its an entertaining enough effort.

1 out of 5 stars An Utter Mess.......2007-06-28

It is amazing to me that this movie has managed to recieve an average rating above 1 star (deserves a zero). It's a complete mess from beginning to end. Gideon (Brosnan) and Carver (Neeson) are both unlikeable characters, and the actors play their roles with phony Western overstatement. Brosnan is so unbelievable as his character, it is laughable.

The plot is a grinding, plodding, so-what sort of scenario in which Gideon and Carver are supposed to encounter some intersting folks along their journey and end up in a climactic face-off with each other (yawn). The only things they come across are foolish actors struggling through poorly written parts, including Anjelica Huston who shows up out of nowhere in the desert in a nonsensical cameo.

To compare this movie favorably to "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is a crime. Where "..Josey.." has charm, suspense, pathos, and a boat load of great characters, "Seraphim.." has nothing to offer - NOTHING.

4 out of 5 stars A Fugitive-like western.......2007-06-28

I liked this western as it was action packed and suspenseful from the git go. I got a bit of a chuckle that the two post-Civil War characters in this wild, wild American west film were Irish-born Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan . I'd never seen the dapper Pierce look grizzly and bedraggled before and definitely enjoyed him in his efficient, survivalist character. I was aware of the lack of Liam's Irish brogue as if it took much of his attention to speak like a western cowboy. It had beautiful cinematography but the ending was just okay.

3 out of 5 stars Very intersting........2007-06-28

It is not what you would expect from a western/revenges story. Very poetic and more than a little abstract in an existential way. The directing/photography is beautiful.

A frame-bursting roster of actors crowds this two-part HBO miniseries, which is nothing less than a look at America through the lens of a small New England town. Richard Russo adapted his own novel, a story of a gently depressed factory town that has always been run by the wealthiest family around (currently lorded over by matriarch Joanne Woodward). Ed Harris plays the central role, a decent, cautious man who runs a local diner and carefully negotiates the political niceties of Empire Falls; Paul Newman is his rapscallion of a father (the son is perpetually picking food out of Dad's beard), Helen Hunt is Harris's ex-wife, Aidan Quinn his feistier brother, and Robin Wright Penn his tragical mother seen in flashbacks.

The goal of Russo and director Fred Schepisi seems to have been fidelity to the novel, which gives the film a pleasingly relaxed pace but also a somewhat literal-minded binding. Even that doesn't explain the general lack of tautness, or why so much of the dialogue has an awkward fit in actors' mouths. Harris and Newman, of course, are younger and older versions of American monuments, and their sheer presence goes a long way toward making the picture work (for the premium Newman-Russo match, see Robert Benton's sublime film of Nobody's Fool). Most of the twists in the final reels are genuinely affecting, and the movie has the courage to end on a mild note rather than strain to tie everything up. It's a fitting finale for an unassuming enterprise. --Robert Horton

Description

Adapted by author Richard Russo from his 2001 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, EMPIRE FALLS is a portrait of the gritty drama and human comedy that make up everyday life in blue-collar America. On a daily basis, goodhearted restaurant manager Miles Roby (Ed Harris "Glengarry Glen Ross") tries to keep his Empire Grill going, even as the wealthy and powerful Mrs. Whiting(Joanne Woodward "Philadelphia"), makes life difficult for him. If that wasn't enough, Miles has to keep tabs on his scoundrel of a dad, Max (Paul Newman "The Color of Money") who is always looking for trouble. But, Miles has something much bigger than just restaurant receipts and a cantankerous father on his mind-he can't shake the ghosts of his past that keep his fate inevitably connected to Empire Falls.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is an acting clinic.......2007-06-12

Ed Harris and Paul Newman are both amazing here. I know Newman won the Emmy and the Golden Globe, but Ed Harris really made this film for me. Not only was this one of his best performances, but I also liked his character the most. Everyone else in the cast is very good as well, especially the almost too cute Danielle Panabaker as the daughter.

The movie took a little time to pull me in, but once that relaxed "small town" pacing got a hold of me, I wasn't able to look away.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-04-10

Excellent movie and well written story to follow. I bought this movie as a present for my girlfriend because she was one of the extras in it.

4 out of 5 stars Great cast, good story.....but ?........2007-03-23

I'm scratching my head, wondering what was lacking in this DVD for me. The cast could not be better---each actor was wonderul, and Ed Harris, the lead certainly held my interest. The story was interesting and worth telling, and it seemed good that they took their time in telling it---not trying to crowd a novel into a two hour movie.

The closest I can come to for an explanation of my lack of real enthusiasm for it is the tone. It really tells a very dark story and although it's nice to enter into it with all the ordinariness of small town life, but it doesn't adequately prepare us for the really terrible revelations that occur later in the film. I left it with the impression of all the nice folks together eating donuts at the Empire grill. Perhaps it was the cinematograpy---just too much light and shots of the pretty New England town. It was too uniformly sunny...for the dark subject matter. The development of the character depended on his digging into the darkness of his past and this was not adequately represented in the style of the film.

The main idea of the film was the development of the emotionally watered down grill owner (Ed Harris) who is obviously an underachiever. We hear he got straight A's in school and went to college, which was unusual in that town, and yet here he is, working for the town Tyrant (Woodward) managing the small restaurant for the last twenty years with no end in sight. He's great looking and charming but his wife left him for an obvious bozo. His daughter begs him to stand up and stop the marriage but he's so nice and easy going that he just makes her promise to be a bridesmaid. Perhaps, as another reviewer suggested, Harris is just too naturally virile and macho to play such a wimpy character. (I loved him in History of Violence)

When he finally breaks out, he's not convincing either. The fight with the cop is good and it's satisfying to hear him tell off the town witch but he still seems rather sappy to me....spending an awful lot of time hugging his daughter. (If the characters in this story spent more time hugging their mates rather than their kids, they might all have been better off.)

The ending was not clear to me. Does he go back to his really drippy ex-wife (Helen Hunt)? and go into business with his mother-in-law? (I'd hoped he would steal the cute blond waitress away from his step-brother.)

Another thought: maybe it was the enormous joy that Paul Newman obviously took in playing his character that sort of spoiled the darkness of the film. Shame on you, Paul!

4 out of 5 stars Good, Good, Really.......2007-03-07

I had waited in great anticipation when this came out on HBO, and I wanted to see it, I waited, and waited, and it finally comes on T.V, and I sat down and watched it. It has an all-star cast, it has a brilliant cinematic view to it. It is brilliant. It runs slow sometimes, some things get lost in it, as it tries to balance the outside world around Ed Harris character. There are scenes that can bring out emotion, scenes that can entertain, scenes that can do a lot of things, and that's what makes it very good.

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Better Film Adaptations.......2006-11-21

So, I finally caved and bought the DVD version of Empire Falls based off Richard Ruso's novel. And the first thing I have to say is that it was good. Not as good as the novel, but still good. I actually didn't know that Russo himself had written the screenplay. If I had known that earlier, I would've watched it a while back.

Fred Schepisi does a wonderful job putting the pieces together in the small New England town of Empire Falls. Almost every actor was dead-on portraying the characters from the book. Although, Francince Whiting didn't seem quite as evil in the film adaptation. I was especially in awe of Paul Newman's performance of Max Roby. He was by far the funniest (and the saddest when he needed to be) character in the film.

There seems to be something missing from the adaptation though. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's there. I guess that's what you get from any film in which you've already read the book. It's lacking some of the little details that one can only explain in words.

Nevertheless, the film was wonderful. A young movie and book buff like myself can only hope for more film adaptations like this one in the future. By far, one of the best adaptations you can get your hands on.

Based on the posthumously published memoir by Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, Before Night Falls is artist-director Julian Schnabel's second exercise in artist biography, but where Schnabel's earlier film Basquiat was relatively conventional, this film is bolder in both style and execution. Schnabel is perhaps too enamored of his subject as a noble martyr, lending the film a somewhat inflated sense of importance. Still, it's rare to see an artist's life and work so elegantly interwoven, and Before Night Falls uses all of Arenas's life as its canvas, from impoverished youth to lively gay freedom in mid-1950's Cuba; imprisonment during Castro's antigay regime; and to New York City in 1980, followed by Arenas's battle with AIDS and subsequent suicide (depicted here as assisted) in 1990.

Through these extreme rises and falls, Arenas is always writing, his typewriter his most faithful lover and weapon (by way of smuggled manuscripts) against the dark forces that surround him. As Time magazine's Richard Corliss wrote, Arenas is "a serious actor's dream role: to be a gay Jesus in a modern Passion Play," and Javier Bardem--the first Spanish actor to receive an Oscar nomination--inhabits the role with subtle ferocity, charting this emotional odyssey with outer reserve but blazing infernos of internal passion. And while Schnabel suffers from a hyperactive camera, there's poetry here--visual, dramatic, and literal--and vibrant humor to temper the deep tragedy of Arenas's life. Schnabel also uses his actor friends to good advantage: a nearly unrecognizable Sean Penn adds an ironic touch to his brief appearance as a peasant, and Johnny Depp is both funny and fearsome in dual roles as a drag queen and vicious army interrogator. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars pobre inocente!.......2007-04-19

javier bardem stars as cuban poet reinaldo arenas in this stolid and overlong biopic (with pretensions of artiness) that lets us know that castros cuba is not a workers paradise especially if youre a flitty gay poet. better in its longings than in its execution.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe it's me.......2007-03-31

This movie just didn't do much for me. I found it agonizingly slow, and another annoying testament to an artist who had to die to be appreciated; who worked his entire life producing only to remain penniless and uninsured even in his final days. If Castro's Cuba is so bad, what does that say about America? Anyway, I will say that the cinematography was beautiful and it did transport you to another world, and that I always appreciate - the beauty of the color, the music, the earth, sea and sky. I appreciated the fine art of Johnny Depp, I must have missed Sean Penn.

I guess it depends on what you want to see it for. There are some rather nasty torture scenes and nudity. Not a date movie, but if you are studying art or the artist himself, go for it.

4 out of 5 stars Mandatory viewing for Castro apologists.......2006-12-21

In my head i'd mistakenly assumed that Fidel Casto was the acceptable face of dictatorships....he has designer label kudos, and is much beloved by some with a left wing disposition.
Upon watching this marvellous but somewhat sprawling film my wrong assumption became very apparent as i learnt about gay people being sent to concentration camps and beaten up. Castro's speeches effectively intermingle with the film and the general rhetoric reminded me of Hitler(who was of course worse)

5 out of 5 stars Befire Night Falls.......2006-08-14

This story is so fascinating that I couldn't stop feeling that the drive to create and to be true to one's identity and sexual preference had to be overwhelming to cause the writer, Arenas, to survive and escape the homophobic surroundings in Cuba under Castro. Johnny Depp is unbelievably wonderful as both the sadistic lieutenant and the transporting Drag Queen.

5 out of 5 stars Life is its' own reward.......2006-08-03

I read the book many years before seeing the movie. Both are testimonies of the mystery of the human spirit, the wonder and love of life, and the ugliness of human hatred.

Too much surface. Director Lee (The Edge) Tomahori's noir story serves as a McGuffin to its ripe style. Amid secret agendas and unspeakable acts onscreen you stare at the fall of light across old cops' desks. Musing on super-8 footage of naked Jennifer Connelly, your mind wanders. Ah, yes, an allusion to the opening shots of Chinatown. Roman Polanski's grand reinvocation of the dark intuitions of 1940s noir is there, too, in the sumptuous look, the plump list of stars (Nick Nolte, Michael Madsen, Melanie Griffith, John Malkovich), and the swoony, bittersweet soundtrack. The zigzags of the story that bring together two cheating husbands, one pneumatic babe, and (somehow) homosexuality waywardly recall The Big Sleep. The Atomic Energy Commission subplot feels like an homage to Kiss Me Deadly. With so many other movies to please, by the middle of the film it's clear that the story isn't going to thicken, that for all the amperage in Nolte's performance, for all the male rage in Michael Madsen and Chazz Palminteri, the hints of sexual malfeasance aren't going much past Nolte's domestic guilt about his affair with Connelly. And yet there are rich things. Tracing a path from his girlfriend to the head of the Commission (Malkovich), Nolte listens, hat in hand, to a purring existential science lecture about the invisible world of atoms. "Yeah," Nolte growls, "well, I see too much." Would that the filmmakers had let us see more. --Lyall Bush

4 out of 5 stars In the realm of movies like "Chinatown", it comes very close to being almost as good........2007-03-17

Set in the 1950's, this movie possesses the same elements as the other great "period" pieces, such as "Chinatown", "The Two Jakes", and "LA Confidential". While not as great as "Chinatown", it comes very close to its mark in all the ways that "Chinatown" does (see my review on "Chinatown"). I enjoyed this movie very much due to its similarities with the other movies mentioned and for the totally new story it portrayed, including the dramatic twist of the ending. No, Nick Nolte is not Jack Nicklson, but he certainly holds his own in this extreme account of murder and mayhem in 50's Los Angeles. In fact, with the settings being the same in all four movies, we get a great scenario of Los Angeles from the late 30's to the mid 1950's, making it a grand occasion to watch these four movies together in chronological order!

4 out of 5 stars 1953 L. A. story.......2007-01-31

The plot summary lists the setting as 1940's Los Angeles but the story is set in 1953. You'll see a once in a lifetime cast here in this one and most of the cast is very good. The story is a little reminiscent of "Chinatown" and some film noir movies of the late 1940's. If you ever had a desire to see Nick Nolte smoke a large number of cigarettes, this is the perfect movie for you. For the rest of us, it's a pretty good story that keeps you intertested to the end. The non-ending brings down the rating a little- 3.5 Stars.

3 out of 5 stars A modern noir!.......2006-04-16

The script is by itself very intriguing. A crime, that attains the high spheres of the power will arise all sort of suspicious by an effective group of non traditional investigators who will play hard and face the risks to undertake the resolution of this entangled case. Cover ups, imposed limitations to find out the roots of the fact, will increase its radius of action, where the National Security is invoked in order to put all the obstacles and legal hindrances to avoid by all means to reach the awful truth.

The script, given the impressive cast simply was not at the same level. Many important actors (like John Malkovich, for instance) was wasted through insipid and irrelevant dialogues which lessened the expected dramatic punch.

2 out of 5 stars Film Noir Lite.......2006-03-28

A well-crafted but ultimately thin period piece taking place in late '40s-early '50s Southern California, MULHOLLAND FALLS is visually engaging entertainment that yet leaves you unsatisfied as the credits roll.

A powerful cast (Nick Nolte, Jennifer Connelly, Melanie Griffith, John Malkovich, Michael Madsen, Chazz Palmintieri and Chris Penn, et. al.) doesn't lend depth to this two-and-a-half-star effort, though it does distract you from its shortcomings. Director Lee Tamahori, no stranger to the dark side, makes much less than what he might of this potentially impressive tale of unfaithfulness, betrayal, murder and death.

Nolte (Hoover) is the leader of L.A.'s infamous "Hat Squad" a special organized crime task force that busts heads and breaks bones to keep the peace. When Alison Pond (the oh-so-Forties Era Connelly) turns up dead, all the signs of murder point back to her lover, who happens to be head of the Atomic Energy Commission (John Malkovich). Nolte too, it turns out, has had a dalliance with the peripathetic, kinky and very voluptuous Miss Pond. The expectable cover-up destroys Nolte's marriage and career as it evolves.

Although MULHOLLAND FALLS samples many other period films, Tamahori's noir is never quite noir enough. The intrinsic moral dilemma the characters face, of indulging in the hidden side of human nature, never expands past straightforward beating and cheating. Without more, MULHOLLAND FALLS disappointingly ends its run as a fairly mundane morality play about fidelity.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst gay films ever!.......2007-07-03

One of the worst gay films ever, filled with ceaseless and pointless verbal diarrhea which keeps you on the edge of your seat because you will feel so drowsy that you can't sit straight!!!

The first film has two guys talking about stupid stuff for 30 minutes and then shove something that looks vaguely like a negligible whiff of lame horror in the last 30 seconds just to absurdly proclaim itself as a gay horror film.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time - This DVD best used as a coaster.......2007-06-10

There are a few movies that I've watched that are so bad that I don't bother to finish watching. "When Darkness Falls" was one of them.

Badly written and poorly acted, the thin script and dialog was repeated endlessly for perhaps no reason beyond filling the time. Characters repeated the same action so often I thought the DVD was stuck or the editor had lapsed consciousness.

I'm told that the second film (The Best of Care) was better, but I had long since exited the show by the time the second "dose of fright" came on the screen.

The photography (passable) and the music (atmospheric) were among the best parts of the entire film. Unfortunately, neither of these more promising elements could make up for the flaws in what was ultimately a waste of plastic.

3 out of 5 stars Scary.......2007-05-31

"When Darkness Falls'

Scary Movie

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

There is something about horror movies that is compelling. "When Darkness Falls" Is one of those movies that keep you on the edge of your chair and even though you know it is just a movie, it gives the "creeps". Made up of two separate movies--"When Darkness Falls" and "The Best of Care" there is enough horror to last a long time.
In the first of the two, "When Darkness Falls", Kevin invites a new boyfriend to his cabin for the weekend. Of course, we do not know if Kevin can be trusted. Rumors abound about the old cemetery upon which Kevin's house is built. Something is out there and as darkness falls...
"The Best of Care', the second movie tells of Bill who has been taking care of his ailing boyfriend, Donny. Bill really longs for another life, away from Donny and the stuffy house. One night, Bill's situation changes suddenly but Donny is unable to accept that.
Even with the repetitive dialog and non-existent special effects, the movie evokes a sense of dread and horror.
I do not think I can take the film seriously, however. It is quite simply a fun movie. The characters are fun and good looking, the humor is tongue in cheek and it is scary. "The Best of Care" is the more serious of the two but there is no sex and no nudity.
I love a good scare and for that reason I liked this film. It may be amateurish but it is enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars Gay horror?.......2007-05-20

The dialogue was repetitive, the special effects almost non-existent, the actors, though attractive, behaved as though they hadn't been instructed what to do after a certain point and were just maintaining until further notice. It had potential, being gay myself and a horror fan, I had high hopes for such a film, but I never felt edge of my seat thrills, and there wasn't even one nude scene! I wouldn't have bought it had I been able to rent it first, and I wouldn't advise anyone to waste their money. I do hope the film makers make another attempt in this genre, but correct these areas when they do.

3 out of 5 stars Plenty Suspensful.......2007-05-15

Okay, so here's the deal. It's quite scary and chilling at times. I wouldn't take it seriously (as in any thriller), but if you want some fun characters, great tongue-in-cheek humor, jump scares and cute guys, then it's fun entertainment. The second story is more serious, more like Night Gallery. Overall it's fun gay entertainment, and some great kissing. The music is great!

BTW, the director/cast info amazon has listed is wrong. This stars Mike Dolan, Ron Petronicolos, Matt Austin, Craig Staswick, Seth Adams.

Aviva Kempner's Peabody Award-winning documentary is about baseball like Field of Dreams is about cornfields. Kempner efficiently covers all the bases of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg's magnificent career with archival footage and talking heads, including family members, former teammates and baseball legends, broadcasters and sportswriters, and such unabashed fans as Alan Dershowitz and Walter Matthau. If this biography's style is not remarkable, its subject certainly was. Greenberg, the son of immigrant parents, was a beacon of hope to Jews. As one observer notes, baseball was a way of "showing we were as American as everybody else." To see one of their own succeed in the national pastime at a time of virulent anti-Semitism was a source of pride and inspiration. One lifelong fan, a rabbi, states, "He was the baseball Moses." Winner of several critics association awards for Best Documentary, this is a stirring film for all seasons. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars A solid homage to a trailblazing ballplayer.......2005-07-25

This film doesn't back even a quarter inch from being a documentary of a great Jewish ballplayer. The opening theme song is "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in Yiddish. It sets the tone for the whole film in perfect fashion.

One of my professors in grad school explained to me how he changed his name as a grad student in the 1930s in order to "pass" as what we would now call WASP in order to escape the "Jew quotas" placed against the hiring of too many Jewish professors. Today we forget just how anti-Semitic much of the United States was before World War II and beyond. As this documentary points out, this was especially true in Detroit, where America's premiere industrial anti-Semite, Henry Ford, held sway. The film mentions but does not expand upon Ford's anti-Semitic activity, which included paying for the printing and distribution of the wretched forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," one of the most racist rags ever penned. This provides the social and historical background for this marvelous documentary history of the great Hank Greenberg, the first professional baseball star to openly embrace his ethnic background. He thus served as the Jackie Robinson of the Jews in the thirties. But there was a slight difference. Though African-Americans were discriminated against and subjugated to terrible racial injustice, there was a sense in which they were undeniably American. Jews, however, at the time enjoyed an almost outsider status, not really Americans, more in the nature of displaced Europeans. Greenberg, however, was not just a Jewish sports star, but a star in the great American game of baseball. His Jewish identity is central to the film, from the recounting of his earlier years to the shocking film footage of Nazi rallies in New York in the late 1930s to Greenberg's being drafted (and reenlisted) for military service in World War II. And as commentator Alan Dershowitz points out, he was the anti-thesis of what Hitler said it was possible for a Jew to be. He was the living proof of the lies of Hitler.

One of the many jokes in AIRPLANE! is when someone asks for some light reading, and is given a slender pamphlet entitled GREAT JEWISH SPORTS STARS. Greenberg is one of the great athletes to give the lie to such a conception. He would reign as the great Jewish baseball player until the emergence of Sandy Koufax twenty years later. What is striking about both players is that they were both handsome, eloquent, and great gentlemen. Both men were great heroes to Jews across America, but interestingly neither was especially religious.

As a baseball fan, I really enjoyed a lot of the baseball lore that comes through in the film. For instance, I knew that Greenberg and Gehringer were a great twosome in the infield, but I was unaware that one season the infield knocked in more runs than any infield in baseball history. Or that a new and controversial glove that the poor fielding Greenberg debuted one season would be finally approved by the league and eventually lead to the modern first baseman's glove. Or that Greenberg was the first $100,000 player. Most of all, perhaps, is all the great game footage. Most baseball fans know Greenberg by sight in a photo, but few of us would recognize him from the way he swings his bat. But now perhaps I would. There is also the fantastic segment in which Greenberg in film from the 1980s explains how the Tigers were able in late 1940 to steal the signs of the other team by placing a minor league coach in the stands with binoculars, and signaling by which hand he held them what pitch was coming.

Although in many ways Greenberg enjoyed a relatively short career, shortened by injuries and by military service in what would be the peak years for most power hitters (the peak for most home run hitters comes between the ages of 30 and 35, the very years Greenberg was in the military), he enjoyed by any standard a remarkable career. Because of the war years he lost any chance at 500 career homers, but he led the Tigers to several remarkable seasons, with four pennant winners and two world championships, all to go with his two MVP awards.

A bit of trivia partially revealed in the film. In the 1935 World Series umpire George Moriarty stopped the game to order the Cubs to stop making anti-Semitic remarks directed at Greenberg. The film then briefly interviews actor Michael Moriarty, the umpire's grandson, who himself starred in one of the great baseball films ever made, BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY, starring Moriarty and a very, very young Robert DeNiro.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional documentary.......2004-06-26

I think this is a truly exceptional documentary on many different levels. First, it tells the story of one of the best baseball players in history, who often goes unrecognized for his skills. I consider myself a big baseball fan, especially in the history of baseball and stars of the past. Yet before this movie, I knew very little about Hank Greenberg. Despite being one of the best hitters at that time, Greenberg isn't talked about very often. This DVD gets his story out, and shows how dominant of a ball player he was.

A major reason that Greenberg is often overlooked when people talk about great ball players is that he spent many of his prime years serving the war effort and was away from baseball. This has kept his lifetime stats and therefore his notoriety down.

Another major reason this movie was so good was how it showed Greenberg's career in baseball as a Jewish baseball player. Although his abuse was less than what Jackie Robinson would later recieve, he still did suffer abuse. Also, he was watched and revered by the Jewish community. He was respected and admired as a Jewish man who was just as good as other American ball players, giving Jews a sense of pride. One of the best parts of the film is when the viewer learns that Greenberg talked to Jackie Robinson about playing in baseball as a minority, and gave him support.

Whether he was helping Detroit win the World Series, serving his country in the war, being a symbol of pride for the Jewish population, or giving Jackie Robinson advice, we can see that he meant a lot to a lot of people. This is a remarkable story about a remarkable man, through the lens of baseball. If you like baseball and baseball history, this movie is a must-see.

3 out of 5 stars Important Ballplayer for many reasons........2003-05-02

Hank Greenberg seemed like a pretty decent fellow and a whale of a ballplayer. Like many, he lost his prime years fighting those jerks in the Pacific. No telling how good his career number would have been if he could have been back in the states poking at the pill. Even with that handicap he still played in three World Series and won 2 MVP awards. This move does a pretty good job of documenting his life, but it seems to define him too much by his religion. Greenberg wasn't even a religious person, but the film continues to go back to the subject. I'm sure that he found discrimination along the way, but when you see the actual footage of him interviewed in 1983, you get the impression that he would be very uncomfortable with his life being told through that lens. He seems too no nonsense for that. It's interesting when he collides with rookie Jackie Robinson in 1947, and offers him encouragement. It's really a poetic moment in baseball history.

The movie is good enough that it seems too short. A shame that there isn't more baseball footage from that time period.

4 out of 5 stars Hank Greenberg the Jewish Babe Ruth/Moses/Jackie Robinson.......2003-01-12

If the point of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" is lost on the viewer, then history itself put the writing on the wall when the owner of the Detroit Tigers misunderstood the meaning of an old photograph of Greenberg and traded his star to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1947 season. Greenberg's last season in the baseball was Jackie Robinson's first, and Greenberg was in the National League to witness it first hand. Not surprisingly, Greenberg was one of the few opposing ball players to offer Robinson encouragement in breaking baseball's color line. But then, as this 1999 documentary proved repeatedly, no white player in the history of the game had been subjected to the abuse Greenberg suffered because his was Jewish. Without a doubt Robinson suffered more, maybe even more that first season than Greenberg his entire career. But this documentary also shows that Greenberg was as important to the American Jewish community as Jackie was to African Americans.

I remembered that Greenberg was the first person to win the MVP award at two different positions and that in 1935 he had 100 R.B.I.'s at the break and was not selected for the All-Star team (Manager Mickey Cochrane did not want to be accused of playing favorites with someone from his own team and picked Lou Gehrig and Jimmy Foxx instead). But what I really picked up from this documentary was how good Greenberg made the Detroit Tigers during his career. If you look at his career batting statistics you will see that Greenberg played eight full seasons and batted in over 100 runs seven times for the Tigers between 1933 and 1946 (several seasons were lost to injury and military service). The Tigers played in the World Series in 1934, 1935, 1940, and 1945, and Greenberg was the common denominator for those teams. You will be hard pressed to find a major league baseball player with that sort of success ratio since Greenberg's day outside of New York Yankees like Berra, Ford, Mantle, and Jeter.

Writer-director Aviva Kempner balances Greenberg's playing career with the impact he had as baseball's first Jewish star. There are some clips from an old interview with Greenberg, who died in 1986. But most of the talking heads are from contemporary clips of Greenberg's family, former teammates, reporters, and lifelong fans. The last category are the most interesting, because it includes not only famous people like Walter Matthau and Alan Dershowitz, but ordinary fans, including several rabbis and a self-admitted "groupie." These are the people with whom "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" resonates the most. Clearly this is a documentary which will be of interest to baseball fans but also to those interested in the story of a true American hero.

Final Note: The documentary does not point out that in 1938 when Greenberg hit 58 home runs, two short of Babe Ruth's record, he hit two balls into a screen that were ground rule doubles; however, that screen was not there when Ruth played in 1927

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough and Rounded Biographical Film.......2002-08-03

My father often talks of how Hank Greenberg is not given the credit he deserves as a ballplayer, as a great power hitter and as an amazing story of persistence in coming back as a tremendous player after serving in World War II. I bought him this video as a Father's Day gift, and I think I enjoyed it as much as he did. This documentary/biography is not at all dry. Many people, famous and not, are shown speaking of their admiration for Hank Greenberg as a player and as a man. The video emphasizes heavily his role as the first openly Jewish player in major league baseball, the bigotry he faced, and the grace with which he responded to it. A home run with two men on base was Greenberg's reply to an ethnic slur; what could be better? I enjoy the statistics of baseball and Greenberg's performance numbers were not mentioned as much as I would have liked, but that is a minor point. After seeing this video, I feel I know the first Hammerin' Hank as well as any of today's players, and admire him more than the vast majority playing today, not just for his hitting prowess but for his character.

4 out of 5 stars Phantom Of The Dreamland Theatre..........2007-06-27

A group of film students decide to host a horror-movie fiesta at a local abandoned theatre called the Dreamland. Their hope is to raise money for their projects by showing the movies complete w/ the orchestrated gimmicks that made them famous (such as a giant mosquito on a wire over the audience, electrically charged seats, etc.). The movies themselves are excellent parodies of 50s / 60s sci-fi schlockers not unlike many in my own collection! All seems fine, until a mysterious killer begins knocking off students one by one, using the very gimmicks to cause the deaths! You see, a cult leader murdered his wife on the theatre's stage 15 years earlier, filming it for posterity. Now, it appears that he's back, using unique methods to enact his vengeance! POPCORN is as funny as it is scary and mysterious. Jill Schoelen (Stepfather, Chiller) is good as Maggie, Dee Wallace-Stone (Cujo, The Howling) is her mum, and Ray Walston gets a decent little cameo! Also watch for Malcolm Danare (Christine) and Freddie Simpson (The People Under The Stairs) as students! Watch this one as a double feature w/ DEMONS and you'll never want to go to a theatre again!...

5 out of 5 stars A hidden gem for horror movies.......2007-04-05

This was a great addition to my horror collection. I loved this movie because of the idea of a group of college students creating a "horror flick" of their own trying to raise money. I really liked the ideas that they used with old movies as "shock effects" for the audience to have a totally new presentation of the "old favorites". This was a very good thriller and it was also suspenseful to watch. I recommend this movie to all horror movie collectors and watchers. It is truely a hidden gem in the horror genre.

3 out of 5 stars Fun movie marred by an awful dvd presentation.......2007-01-17

I'm a fan of Alan Ormsby (Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things) and was excited to see this film which he wrote the screenplay for (under the name Tod Hackett.) It's an enjoyable film, with a fondness for the good old days of crazy B movies and William Castle-esque promotional gimmicks. It's a shame though that this disc from Elite is a horrible pan and scan version. The picture quality has all the clarity of an ex-rental vhs tape. This presentation is on par with the terrible job Artisan did on Fright Night Part 2. It would be nice if Anchor Bay or Blue Underground picked up Popcorn and came out with a remastered widescreeen dvd, but until then, this will have to do.

4 out of 5 stars Popcorn.......2007-01-15

Cult Horror movie, not to bad not full a lot of blood and gore. May be boring for someone who wants that kind of movie. I bought this as a gift.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2006-06-29

This is a pretty entertaining film (though probably not always for the reasons the creators had in mind), especially for fans of 80's and early 90's slasher-type films. The plot is fairly simple: a group of film students put on a "Horror, Sci-Fi, and Supernatural" film festival in an old theater to gain recognition and raise funds, and during the evening they are killed off one by one. It manages to keep the killer and motive a secret, while tricking viewers into thinking they know who it is right away. The actors are also notable horror b-listers. It features Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, Curse II), Dee Wallace-Stone (The Howling, The Hills Have Eyes), and Kelly Jo Minter (The Lost Boys, A Nightmare on Elm St. V, The People Under The Stairs) to name a few. The films biggest problems are a few corny moments, and the killers motives aren't very strong for killing certain people he shouldn't have a grudge against.
If you're into movies like this, and have 9 bucks to blow give it a shot!

Humanity's fear of the dark provides Darkness Falls with some anxiety and fuels some jolts of fear from things popping out of nowhere. A kindly woman, who used to give children gold coins in exchange for their lost baby teeth, was hanged for a murder she didn't commit; in her last moments she laid a curse on the town (which has the unlikely name of Darkness Falls). So over the years the ghost of this woman has murdered various children because they saw her when she came to collect their teeth. In the present day, a boy who evaded her clutches returns to town as an adult in order to help the young brother of his childhood sweetheart--and from there this incoherent, inane movie is one long chase sequence without a glimmer of imagination or intelligence. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Kyle Walsh (Chaney Kley) must return home to confront his troubled past and save his childhood sweetheart Caitlin (Emma Caulfied), and her younger brother (Lee Cormie), from an unrelenting evil that has plagued the town of Darkness Falls for more than one hundred and fifty years.

5 out of 5 stars Alot better than people are saying it is here.......2007-05-23

I liked this movie and in my opinion, was presented the way the orginal fairy tale of the tooth fairy was written. Orginal fairy tales were written for adults with "adult subject matter" to them. Fairy tales were never written for children (Grimm Fairy Tales), hence that is why this was made into a horror film. The story was written well and also presented well on screen. It does have it's scares and "jumps" in this one just like all good horror movies have. See this movie for yourself and make up your own mind. I liked it "horror fairy tale" is what made it very different. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that loves "adult fairy tales" and horror movies combined.

2 out of 5 stars Just another horror movie, not so bad !.......2007-01-04

Not the worst I have ever seen, but not the best. You don't have to wait half an hour to get into action. The movie itself last an hour and fifteen minutes ...On a good home cinema, I must say that the sound is pretty good, prepare yourself to jump a few times ! The filmmakers had succeed in creating a tension that is almost omni-present. Not that bad but not a masterpiece to add to your DVD collection eighter.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than everyone thinks.......2006-09-17

I was very plesantly surprised by this movie. Very few horror movies in the last 15 years are well done or provide an interesting and scary antagonist as well as having an original, creative storyline. This is definitely one of the better horror movies to come out in the last 5-10 years. The opening montage [...] in right away and is superbly done, and the witch and darkness are enough to carry this through. It's an enjoyable horror movie that provides a great premise. The acting is slightly above average and certainly nothing insulting. 5 stars for what will provide me much entertainment well into the future upon repeated viewings. Also, listen to the director's commentary and deleted scenes. They always make you appreciate a movie more.

2 out of 5 stars We should be safe here.......2006-09-13

How many times in this movie did a minor character say the words "We should be safe here" about 1 second before he or she is wisked away by the 'tooth fairy'? At least 6 times and it became so tiresome to hear that line and know what was coming before he or she finished speaking. This movie stunk. I gave it 2 stars because the 'tooth fairy' was something of a well done evil creature. None of the main characters had any redeeming value.

3 out of 5 stars tooth fairy reeks havoc!.......2006-07-08

A phantom who takes the last baby tooth of every child in the town....and if you make the mistake of peeking at her, you're doomed!

There are only two good things about this movie:
1. Plot -A demented tooth fairy out for blood!
2. The mask worn by the demented tooth fairy.

I loved the idea of taking such a pleasant child hood tale and twisting it into a demented story, but the movie itself was bland. It might have been a bit better if they expanded to it cover more victims....and not had her only chasing a small group of boring people. It almost seemed beneath her to keep chasing the older guy. I kept thinking, "Just kill him and be done with it already! There are so many more people to terrorize."

3 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE MOVIE - BUT..........2007-03-12

Enjoyed the movie. The only problem I had was the the audio sinc was slightly off on part of the movie - the dialog did not match up with the actors lip movement - annoying - otherwise I would have given it 4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Great fun if you're not an uptight Baker Street Irregular.......2006-12-13

This is the 2nd of 2 very long TV movies/miniseries featuring two wonderful actors: Christopher Lee as Holmes and Patrick Macnee as Watson. (The following year a 3rd, "Sherlock Holmes in New York", promoted Macnee to Holmes.) Like the first, it has faults and virtues, although ultimately weighted on the side of the latter. As a side note, when shown on TV in this country, this film and its companion were each cut by about a quarter-hour.

However loosely - and it's very, very loosely - this film is related to an old Basil Rathbone film, "Terror by Night". This involves transporting a fabulous diamond, the "Star of Rhodesia", with Holmes overseeing security. "Incident at Victoria Falls" also involves a fabulous diamond, the "Star of Africa". This latter is an actual diamond, although much larger than the gem displayed in the film. That was the Cullinan Diamond, over 300 carats (well over a pound!) in the rough. The Cullinan was eventually cut in to 9 large gems and a goodly number of smaller items. These are all now part of the Crown Jewels.

The film's "Star of Africa", already cut and polished, is - like the Cullinan - going to be transported from South Africa to Britain, where it will be presented to Edward VIII. Mycroft Holmes sends his brother Sherlock to provide security with a plan involving a glass duplicate of the "Star". Yeah. You all know how this turns out: we get to play "diamond, diamond, who's got the diamond?" for the next couple of hours. But it's all in good fun, only slightly spoiled by the banality of the script - I found myself on a number of occasions saying the next highly predictable line before the character who had it. On the bright side, we only get a glimpse of Holmes wearing a deerstalker instead of being constantly treated to that particular wardrobe malfunction.

As for the rest of the cast, there are few that would be much recognized on this side of the Pond. As to characters, it will turn out that one of them is a ringer - not really a fair cop, since we're given no clue that there's anything suspicious about him or her. In the cast, several well-known historical names appear ... such as King Edward (played by the estimable Joss Ackland), Lillie Langtree (played by a fine actor, Jenny Seagrove), Theodore Roosevelt (played by the well-known Claude Akins), and Gugliamo Marconi (played by an unknown, Steven Gurney).

The settings for the film are scenic, and the action usually brisk. The train trip from Capetown to Victoria Falls is a lot of fun, enlivened particularly by Claude Akins, who plays Teddy Roosevelt with appropriate and effective swagger and bluster.

The script writers may have assumed the viewer would already know of the relationship between Langtree and Edward VIII - but in any event, this fact never appears in plot or dialogue - not to mention the fact that Ms. Langtree's participation in the story contains elements entirely antithetical to her actual character.

The story takes a number of twists and turns, although Holmes's vade mecum, detection by deduction, sometimes falls by the side of the road. In this respect, the film falls short of the standard set by the great Basil Rathbone ... not to mention the even greater Jeremy Brett.

Well, no film is perfect. This one is a good evening's entertainment, over 3 hours long. While the cast is generally average, Lee and Macnee give the entire film centrality and impetus. The trick here is not to mind the various little problems and go along for the ride. It's a pretty good one, especially the railroad.

5 out of 5 stars Holmes and Roosevelt join forces in a diamond hunt in Africa .......2006-11-01

This mini series originaly was four hours long and not the two hours shown here, the American version got dramaticly cut for its showing in the states. I have the privalige of owning the full length versions of both mini series. The show is really fun, taking place in 1910 and Holmes has filed that he is in retirement. Until the king himself demands that Holmes and Watson take a rare diamond to Africa to exchange it to the country. The case involves many entangeled love affairs, false identifaction, lies, and murder. One of the many traits that the film has is its adventure, you might call it the Indiana Jones version of Holmes. Holmes and Watson jumping onto trains, Holmes fighting Lions, Watson falling into booby traps and holmes has to do the rescuing, and the climax takes place in a cave with barried treasure.
Some plus's:
Lee's performance as Holmes.
The adventure.
Loaded with historical characters and events.
Holmes and Watson try to stop a locomotive.
And the mystry really has the viewer in suspence all throughout the four hours.
The Train investigation.
Negetives:
The scripting has some holes.
Watson shares some odd replies.

All in all a good Sherlock Holmes film. Five stars!
