I should know; I grew up there. I agree with Florida, but I think the film was excellently cast, especially Michael Parks as the corrupt cop. Great accent and acting on his part. It may be a bit dated know, since it was made 15 years ago, but that movie is still the Louisiana I grew up in - and believe me, that is how politics still works there.

James Spader (Tv's Boston Legal and The Practice, Stargate) stars as a lawyer running for congress. His father just died, he's divorced and he's being beat by his opponent in the campaign race. Spader has a steamy fling with Vietnamese chick Charlotte Lewis and he doesnt know that her blackmailing father videotaped them doing the deed but she comes to his house and so Spader with the girl go try to get the tapes back but Spader ends up getting knocked out and when he wakes up the girl is gone and the only thing is the dead father with a knife by his side. So, he scrams it fleeing the scene of the crime and the next thing you know the girl is put on trial and he takes the case. Spader keeps this to a 2 star rating with his performance. The supporting cast dont add up to their potential. The result is a mystery drama with little life and breath. You can see the end coming a mile away...well I did anyway. Also starring Jason Robards (Enemy Of The State, Magnolia), Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, Jeff Perry (Tv's Nash Bridges), Piper Laurie and Michael Parks (From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill 1 and 2).

I'm a huge fan of Spader but this was not one of his best. Some parts of the plot was difficult to follow because it was boring and could not hold my attention despite Spader's hotness (haha). The problem I have with this film is the use of the "Vietnamese" woman to carry out the plot. Not only was it bad for the film, it gave Vietnamese viewers like me a bad taste in my mouth once the movie was over. The woman did not look like she was Vietnamese and she was just a medium to add sex and violence into the film. Plus, her fate was left untold after the trial. There's nothing realistic about this movie and Spader's character is not very likable though he's suppose to play the good guy. If you would like to see a good movie with Spader and the Vietnam situation, watch The Pentagon Papers. He plays a real hero in that one and it's based on a true story.

This movie wasn't really great..........2004-06-22

I found this movie to be a little too drawn out and confusing, but James Spader did a fairly good job with his role (even though his more recent works are much better). One good thing about this film was the beautiful scenery, colors and lighting in many of the scenes. I just couldn't get into this movie...James Spader's acting abilities were just not at their best in this picture.

A great,, sensual film about New Orleans and the south..........2003-09-15

Storyville has always been one of my favorite films, and now it is finally coming to DVD. It is an interesting and stylish brew, much as if Tennessee Williams was channeled by David Lynch as told to Woodward & Bernstein. The story revolves around Cray Fowler, a young ne'er-do-well scion of old south wealth, played by James Spader, attempting to unravel a family mystery about his father's suicide, the submerged dealings of the past that built the family fortune, and the present day intrigues of his family and his uncle's drive to have Cray Fowler elected a state senator.

Behind all this is a wonderful cast of characters and a standout performance by Joanne Whalley as a district attorney and former live in lover of Spader's character. Whalley does a fantastic, sensuous southern accent, and the relationship between Whalley and Spader is understated, ironic, and high on heat and barely restrained lust. Just great stuff.

The film is helped immensely by filming on location in New Orleans and southern Louisiana, and the visuals really conjure the Big Easy in heat, of summer and otherwise.

A notable supporting role is that of Spader's estranged wife, a dim witted, greedy and vivacious southern debutante type wonderfully played by Justine Shapiro, who went on to wider fame as the host of the Lonely Planet travel series.

Unique But Superficial.......2004-08-05

Storyville existed from 1898 to 1917 as a district where prostitution was not illegal-nor was it strictly legal, either. This film, narrated by a fictional prostitute of the era, attempts to depict Storyville and its denizens. It features an interview with Al Rose, whose book 'Storyville New Orleans' is the definitive work on the topic. The film is very strong on the life of the prostitutes and the social structure of Storyville. It makes some over-generalizations about jazz that can be pardoned in a glossy work. Male prostitution goes unmentioned. The worst flaw is that it provides none of the reasoning for the establishment of Storyville-the French Quarter was over-run with bordellos, among other things-and it has very little discussion of what happened after Storyville was closed down. Rent this DVD if you can, except for hard-core New Orleans history buffs (like me) it's not a keeper.

Old New Orleans........2002-05-01

A great look to the past of a world long gone, Storyville gives us the history of Jazz and old time prostitution. Jelly Roll Morton's ragtime and Madam Lulu Whites brothel, and finally the end of an era with the arrival of WW1. A must see for Jazz fans as well as history buffs. Check out the Ham Dance!

I wanted to see more old video footage of Spike and Co performing. Behind the scenes details of his percussion pieces and props would have been of interest to me.
Best to just listen to his legacy of great recordings and let your imagination run wild. No pictures needed.

This is a must have DVD for all Spike Jones fans out there.
It is a 1988 TV special that features interviews with guests that either knew Spike professionally,worked with him or was a member of his family.It contains live concert footage as well as a myriad of rarely seen movie and TV footage.It certainly leaves you salivating for more and complete material.And if this show is any indication there seems to be plenty of it out there just waiting to be put together and marketed.
After listening to Spike and his zany bands of misfits for years
only on records it gave me new insights as to exactly what Spike was like live and on TV and how he worked.He obviously had a good screen presence and put on an hilarious show but more importantly it showed me exactly just how talented he and all his band members were.
The DVD itself contains NO extras at all(thus lowering its' rating by one star).But considering the total and unfortunate lack of other such shows about Spike Jones I am grateful for just having this one.
In concluding I can only say that if you want a greater respect/appreciation for Spike Jones' music then this DVD is just what the doctor ordered.
Thank you music lovers and thank YOU Spike and the rest of the gang for the great "music" and laughs you've given us all.

Wierd Al of the past, Spike Jones brought amazing musicianship and humor to his original compositions and perhaps more importantly, his parodies of the hit songs of his era. Spike was a fantastic percussionist and a bombastic bandleader, often playing melodies on tuned bicycle horns and shooting off guns on stage. Grab this DVD for a guaranteed laugh or two ... or 200!

At long last..........2004-05-01

Finally a great Spike Jones biography on DVD... a biography that just happened to originally be released about 15 YEARS AGO!! ;) ... BUT ANYWAY!

The great thing about this DVD is that it was filmed (or video taped anyway) when George Rock was still amoung us. I'm just a fan in my 20's but I have a great respect for George Rock's talent in the city slickers... this biography was actually dedicated to his memory (He obviously died shortly after this was put together).

I loved this DVD, while much of the footage was simply from Spikes TV show... there's also a lot of rare footage. Interviews with Sir Frederic Gas and Billy Barty are a plus... not to mention the insights of a younger Dr. Demento.

Buy this DVD... It's a great price and good for multiple viewings (if you're a crazy fan like me anyway)

Finally! A Spike Jones DVD! Spike previously has been represented in this format only on two video compliations, "The Unknown Mark Brothers," and a Reader's Digest comedy box set.

This disc is a repackaging of the 1988 biographical VHS (and Spike's ONLY audio/visual biography ever made).

Lots of clips and quick editing capture the "look and feel" of Spike's brand on music. His friends, coworkers, and family members reveal details about the man himself in documentary style.

LOTS of musical excerpts in this one hour program - but like a movie preview, the clips leave you hungry for the full-length versions.

It's nice to have the 21 cue marks, but most seem to be put in at random places.

This is a film document dissimilar to most of the sort due to the fact that here we get uninterrupted tunes most of the time. This film will be of interest far beyond jazz circles. The Mills Brothers, originally consisting of 4 Mills Brothers, created a style based on so-called Barbershop crooning (dark and well harmonized singing), and they were unique in this field. Big brother John jr. (bass vocal and guitar) died much too early but was replaced by father John sr. who made an excellent job until his death. Then The Mills Brothers became a trio which still was extremely popular. "Run for it".

A great live set (two actually) that shows why Stephane was able to make any song, old or new, sound like it was written the night he played it. The combination of traditional and modern sounds in this quartet is lovely, and all players add their particular strengths to the mix. When Stephane plays the electric violin, it's as if he was born to it, and the interplay between Martin Taylor and Diz Disley, with their very different guitar styles, is great fun. For the money, it's well worth having.

Only one complaint: the camera work, especially in the outdoor section, is naturally terrible, as it is on almost every music film I've ever seen. I personally just want to watch the musicians play (so I can steal their stuff!), not see "artistic" shots of the crowd etc. But don't let that bother you; this is a wonderful DVD.

Note that track 14 is mislabeled on the DVD; it's actually "Time After Time" by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, not "Danny Boy."

Art Hodes puts together a most outstanding Dixieland band, including George Brunis of the Original New Orleans Rhythm Kings and Muggsy Spanier's 1939 "Great Sixteen" and my good friend Nappy Trottier of the 1111 Club in Chicago. Their choices of selections and performances are of Chicago's best form and a real plus for any traditional jazz collector. It's virtually impossible to get Brunis and Hodes on film and it's well worth the investment,either in DVD or VHS!

This is real Zydeco music, performed by the "king" himself. No-one better, no-one next to him. These recordings were also made at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans in 1984. Absolutely a "must" for connoisseurs of this type of music and a fine entry for those who want to learn about it.
