The Merchant Ivory production company (which were also responsible for A Room With a View, Howard's End, and The Remains of the Day, among others) is the driving force behind Cotton Mary, the story of an Anglo-Indian nurse obsessed with becoming part of the British upper class. When Lily (Greta Scacchi from White Mischief and The Player) gives birth to a baby girl, she's unable to produce milk. Cotton Mary (Madhur Jaffrey) promises to take care of the child and secretly takes the baby to her sister, a wet nurse. Soon Lily feels dependent on Mary for the baby's health, and she takes the nurse into her home. Mary immediately starts to consolidate her power in the household by poisoning Lily's mind against the other servants and trying to get her relatives hired in their place. But when Lily's husband John hires Mary's attractive niece as a translator, the resulting affair threatens to unravel all of Mary's plans. Cotton Mary is beautifully filmed, with a sharp eye for the hypocrisies of colonialism. The setting of southern India makes for some vivid images, particularly when Lily's older daughter gets lost in a late-night parade. Though the pace is slow, several scenes capture the mixture of social conflict and personal demons that drive Mary to scheme and manipulate everyone around her. --Bret Fetzer

This underground comedy pairs two well-known actors with unique comic timing between them in a story of pursuing dreams amidst harsh realities. Two luckless life-long friends and suddenly unemployed security guards (Tim Robbins and John Cusack) seek to fulfill a lifelong dream try their hand at music-video production. Along the way they encounter the worst the music and television business has to offer, falling victim to a few scams and all the while clinging to their unbeatable optimism. Finally they hit upon an idea to resurrect a long-dead 1960s group, with predictably disastrous results. Blues legends Junior Walker and Sam Moore make appearances, and the soundtrack is a treat, featuring the likes of Bo Diddley and Devo. As a satire of the video age, it's hit and miss, but enough comic moments exist between the two leads to make Tapeheads an interesting diversion. --Robert Lane
Customer Reviews:
Were the 80s really like this?.......2006-04-22
I hate to give a movie like this a star rating, simply because it veers somewhere between 1 star--for its chaotic script and annoying moments--and 5 stars for such great bits as the dinner and love making scene between Cusack's character and his date, a vampish blackmailer. At one point, he accidentally sets himself on fire while sipping drinks, and he later receives fellatio in a cemetery. It's that kind of movie. The plot doesn't matter. Only the gags do. They come so fast that you might need to watch this one twice. Made in 1988, Tapeheads seems to mock the excess of the 80s by being extremely excessive. It's not as funny as something like Airplane!, but it has the same manic energy and goofy confidence. Clearly, it's not for all tastes. Reviewers commonly cop-out and say that a movie is "X meets Y" (i.e., Kill Bill is Fist Full of Dollars meets Enter the Dragon, or some such). Allow me a similar cop-out. This movie is something like the Blues Brothers meets Weird Al Yankovich (who makes an appearance here if you can believe it). Tapeheads's problem, however, might not be a lack of orginality, but too much (to lift a line from Sunset Boulevard). As Johnny would say, this is "weird, wild stuff."
John and Tim two funny guys.......2005-12-29
I came by this movie by accident at Kmart. I am a big John Cusack fan so I bought it. We must have watched this movie a dozen or more times. I did become a Swanky Mode fan. The music was fun. The part where they film the video was crazy. We laughed through the chicken commercial they made. Anyone who is a Tim Robbins and John Cusack fan will like this movie. My DVD came with the song "Ordinary Man" on a separate disk so we get to relive the music whenever we can. The songs are catchy and fun. ok, just buy it and add it to your collection.
It made it to DVD.......2004-11-27
This is one of those movies I'm surprised made it to DVD. If Tim Robbins and John Cusack still didn't have careers, it probably wouldn't have. It is a great and funny movie...that, like some other reviewers have mentioned, it seems no one outside of my quirky circle of friends ever saw. Some of the humor is dated...it's an older movie...but a lot of it is funny almost 20 years later. It's not for everyone...some of it is pretty silly...but I still laugh seeing it for the umpteenth time. If you have any knowledge of or interest in the music industry, you should buy or rent this one. You will enjoy it (and the Rosco's Chicken and Waffles video will embed itself in your head whether you resist it or not).
AMAZINGLY INEPT MOVIE.......2004-05-09
Based on these reviews I thought to try a genre I'd not explored.
Ohmy, never again. Suggestion: Critically read reviews; going back
after viewing TAPEHEADS I saw clues to the inept, shallow, silly,
awkward, amateurish nature of this faulty flick.
"Any ordinary man wouldn't think twice...".......2003-11-21
First off, I adore this movie. Both Tim Robbins and John Cusack are, to quote Rik from "The Young Ones", BWILLIANT!!! The cast, the music, the dialogue and everything else about this film is totally turbular (... yes, even though I am from New York AND the 80s are over, I still talk like a Valley Boy...)! Some of the funniest scenes in the movie are how Josh and Ivan's music videos are taken directly from videos that we have all seen on MTV (when there was still "M" in MTV). My personal favourite was their tribute to Duran Duran's video "Is There Something I Should Know?" The whole video is in black and white and then a small child throws a ball that is in colour (orange). I gave a happy sigh when I saw that scene. Anyway, that's all Pat has to say in this review. Right now, I am jonesing for some Vanilla Quik so, I must away. Ciaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaao!

Customer Reviews:
Very Subtle...BUT DEFINITELY worth a serious look..........2007-02-02
I was somewhat dismayed to read the negative reviews of this movie. First, we MUST take into account the movie-making team responsible for this film, a team working together, historically, on so many films of similar theme over the years:the British in India. Their effort is unique, this turn, because the action rolls a scant seven years after the last British Viceroy left India to its own self-rule... after a two hundred year "guardianship". What was left in the wake of those two hundred years? ... and please remember the team crafting this movie. The dynamics... the dramaturgy of this movie is secondary, and serves, only, to illustrate history. The central figure, CottonMary, a bi-racial woman, more Indian than "White", but believing herself to be British to the bone... a sentiment NOT shared by the decaying British colonials (holding tightly on to their quickly-vanishing past in India), is foiled, constantly, in all attempts to claim the identity she feels to be her own. The British regard her as an outsider to their world, fit to be only a servant, and her fellow Indians are at odds with her claim to be more British than Indian and are equally at odds with what they see as her affectations, underscoring her efforts to distance herself from them... her Indian counterparts. Too frequently, do they feel her disgust for their Indian ways. And so in the end, the central figure is "no where", neither here nor there, eshewed by all... totally isolated, and pays a terrible personal price for trying to claim her identity as she sees it to be.
I do understand that this film is subtle, but for any viewer at all familiar with M-I's body of work, this film, as part of an oeuvre, is very important, as it captures the wreckage of a significant chapter in Indian history... it is the denoument of that experience, and an entirely fitting and defining "end" snapshot of a two hundred year chapter that shaped the sub-continent.
Not a block buster but a very fine movie.......2006-10-31
But tell me why that cover on the DVD/Video sleeve? Yes, there is an extra marital but nothing like THAT cover. I found the movie absorbing, beautifully filmed and interesting historically/colonialism.
Preposterous story but fine acting and cinematography.......2004-01-25
This 1999 Merchant-Ivory production is set in India in 1954. A wealthy British woman gives birth to a small baby. As she is not able to breastfeed, the hospital nurse, named Cotton Mary, who proudly proclaims that she is half-English herself, makes the woman dependent upon her and moves into the rich woman's house as a servant. Cotton Mary never tells the mother how she is feeding the baby, but the viewer watches Cotton Mary take the baby in a boat each day to visit her own crippled sister who is a wet nurse and lives in a house which the British refer to as an "alms house", where disabled and aged elderly people live.
The plot is ridiculous. How can a mother show no interest at all in how her baby is being fed? Certainly a tiny baby needs to be fed more than once a day. And certainly, they had baby bottles and formula in 1954. The woman's husband, who is a philandering and uncaring journalist doesn't care either. And their older daughter who is about eight years old keeps the secret of these clandestine feedings.
There's more to the story of course. There are the snobby British colonials and the legacy of colonialism. There is the trusted Indian servant who is forced out of his job because of the lies of Cotton Mary. There is Cotton Mary's niece who has an affair with the husband. But mostly the film is about Cotton Mary herself and her descent into mental illness.
The story is awful but the film still had a few things going for it. One was the great acting job of Madhur Jeffrey cast as Cotton Mary. Another was the setting and excellent photography that transported me to a time and place in India that Merchant-Ivory does so well. But the story itself is preposterous and much too long and boring.
if you have to much time on your hand.......2002-08-31
I love Greta Scacchi in most of her movies. I have to take exception to this one. This movie is so boring , one of the reason is that you do not care about any of the role played by the actors. All of the characters dipected in this movie are of
no interest at all . You cannot have any sympathy for any of them they are whithout a story . I have look at that movie 3 times and I cannot find anything good to say about it. Greta Scacchi who is good and sometime exellent in her movies is such a bore in this one. Don't have any great expectations if you buy this movie.
subtle and well-acted satire.......2002-05-07
From the outset, I offer two cautions: the film is primarily satire, not the tepid bourgeois drama one typically associates with Merchant Ivory and, two, the steamy picture on the cover of the DVD has little to do with the main plot of the film.
These cautions are important because if you really like those earnest, self-important, plodding PBS telenovellas like The Jewel in the Crown, you are unlikely to be happy with this sharp and original work. Madhur Jaffrey gives a first-rate performance with the sort of creative adventurousness one usually associates more with live theater than commercial film. Cotton Mary is not likeable, though she is funny; it took guts for Jaffrey and Merchant not to sentimentalize the situation. It almost certainly cost them box office. But this is thoughtful film making and gutsy, hard as steel satire. This is something other than the usual soft hearted and soft minded claptrap usually cranked out about postcolonial India.
One quibble: it could have been shorter by at least 20 minutes. For instance, the whole Charley's Aunt business could have been eliminated without any serious loss in content.

......This is a real tough Tom/Turkey...[gobble-gobble]....I was so disappointed watching this tepid/loose and music/comedy?? on DVD...Paulette Goddard was the show as she is so easy on the eyes, but the insiped 'good olde boy' character Jimmy Stewart had to play was cornball all the way...Stewart should learn from John Wayne to play Jimmy Stewart, no matter what...Stewart should of been Andy Griffith's side-kick in, "Andy from Newberry, NC"...anything for work and a check, I suppose....this DVD is not worth the time or money, folks....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF
James Stewart and Paulette Goddard are great. Script is OK.......2007-05-20
A good but not great movie but many great performances.
Interesting Film.......2006-01-23
Ever the professionals, both Jimmy Stewart and Paulette Goddard gave this film their best effort. Goddard was certainly a gorgeous woman, and her musical number in this film was very interesting...her legendary charm is highly evident. The number itself is a bit odd...she begins in a glamorous gown, singing...then switches to a female version of a Spanish male cabellero (sp?) outfit, flirting outrageously with all the girls...then switches into another glamorous gown and dances the tango (extremely well) with her male partner, who appears to be authentically entranced by her...the first time I saw it, I thought, "What was THAT???" Only Goddard could have pulled it off. It didn't appear that she and Stewart had much in the chemistry department, but they did give it their best effort. It's a pleasant film.
A Mixed Bag.......2005-04-11
The strength of the film is its technical aspect. For the time, the special effects are quite good. Acting is also strong. I was disappointed in the plot. The script just doesn't accomplish the job. Essentially the theme is "art" (in this case music)is superior to business. All business people are evil and only artists know how to celebrate life. Violence, robbery, and deception of any kind is justified to teach the evil businessman a lesson. That's the subplot that just doesn't hold up.
Jimmy Stewart's character, working with Paulette Goddard's character, "save the day" by staging a lottery, which they have previously discussed was not legal. Here again, there's no logic. They do the very thing the script writers prohibited them from doing. It's a non sequituer.
Highly entertaining/unusual-in-a-good-way Jimmy Stewart film.......2002-10-11
"Pot O' Gold" is a Jimmy Stewart film I watch repeatedly and I'm glad I'm not the only one who has heard of it. This film has been released so many time on VHS, and by all never-heard-of studios. United Artists released it to theaters at the time. Why didn't MGM buy the rights to the film years after? Great story about a struggling musician trying to save his father's music store. His notrious health-food obsessed uncle tries to pull Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) into the the health-food business. He meets a beautiful lady singer (Paulette Goddard) who with her other sister sing a band which her brother Willie plays in, and her mother runs it.
When Molly McCorckle (Goddard) learns that Jimmy's uncle is the notorius C.J. Haskell, she becomes upset about it. Description
See Paulette and Jimmy kick up their heels and fall in love! Based on a popular radio money giveaway show of the same name, "Pot O' Gold" stars the ever-bewildered but lovable James Stewart and the beautiful and tempestuous Paulette Goddard, and because 1941 was the peak of the big band era, popular Horace Heidt and His Thirty Musical Knights. The story revolves around the band's struggle for its "big break." The members all live in Mrs. McCorkle's boarding house and spend their time practicing on the roof. When Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) arrives in town and immediately meets Molly (Goddard) and the band, Jimmy soon has the band on his music-hating uncle's radio show, "The Haskell Happy Hour"--and from there it's straight to the top! The film includes such splashy swing numbers as "When Johnny Toots His Horn," "Pete the Piper," "Do You Believe in Fairy Tales?" and "A Knife, a Fork, and a Spoon." The most spectacular scene in the movie includes sixteen rumba-dancing couples, a twelve-piece rumba band, Horace Heidt's Thirty Musical Knights, and one hundred extras in a magnificent country club setting. Don't miss this song and dance extravaganza!

Epitomizes every bad aspect of teen movies........2003-05-23
Though the individual performances by the actors in this movie were were well played, the script was terribly lacking. Everyone expects a teen movie such as this to be comprised entirely of various highschool stereotypes, however in this case, most of them were so far over the top that they lost their real comedic effect. Also, several characters do everything but stay consistent with who the character really is. For example, the excessively stereotypical photographer, social outcast, self-hating, [bad]-car-driving character who hates everything about everyone falls in love with Starla (Barbie-type character), who excessively embodies everything that he really hates.
Overall, this movie had a premise that started off with a little promise, but ended up wandering around in so many circles that it leaves viewers scratching their heads, wondering where the story went.
Slap The French.......2002-10-20
Piper Perabo is perfect for the french role of supposed to be Gebivevve Lapeouff who is actually dead.I watched this yesterday knowing its out in england already. It brillant and funny. It about a girl who wants to be the beeg queen but she needs to let a french exschange student to put put her on top of the rest. Her two friends who love each other hate her but hang around with beacuse shes popular. So when the French arrives hell strikes. Her reputation is slashed and shes sent to the mental house. With thanks to her brother and an ex boyfriend she slaps the french and shows her true identity. But whre was the actual real french exchange stident ?
Saw the Flick - Cat Fights!.......2002-08-31
I have not been so blessed as some of the other folks reviewing this movie. I haven't caught any other films by the lead actress. But I have actually SEEN the movie, not just the trailer.
As for the flick, what with cartoonish characters, plot improbabilities, and obvious reverses, you'd think I'd hate this trifle. You'd be wrong.
Late summer movies are rarely anything other than entertaining. This is not a bad thing. And a chance to see multiple female-on-female fights is brought to hilarious fruition.
Like any good comedy, it is built on a bedrock of tragedy and horror. Our Heroine is a girl who'll do anything to become a co-host on The Today Show. Her dippy boyfriend is the quarterback for the school team who seems destined for a coronary at 20. Her mother is an alcoholic. Her father is a bitter romantic. She stabs even her best friends in the back. Lesbians (or more accurately, women who are perceived as lesbian) are ridiculed. The little brother is a snide, jaded fellow.
Then comes the transfer student. Who, like Eve in All About Eve, watches and waits to take over every aspect of Starla's life. She sucks up the parents, the cheerleading spot, and the dippy boyfriend. Then all hell breaks loose, slowly at first, then with a vengeance. And that is what this movie is about: vengeance.
Funny. Yes. Laugh-out-loud funny? Absolutely. Worth your time? Yes, if you want fairly mindless entertainment. And especially if you love mock battles feminine.
P.S. Slap Her, She's French is a funny title. Not cause for a PC war. This movie doesn't pick on the French any more than the rest of US society. We think they look down their noses at us. That makes us believe it's OK to give them grief. It's not like anyone who views this movie is liable to slap anyone, let alone anyone French.
A MUST SEE!.......2002-08-22
i saw Slap her.. last nite, and i thought it was soooo GREAT! i LOVED IT! it was soooo funny! i couldnt stop laughing!! :)
Piper did a really AMAZING job in it.. but are we surprised? no, because she's ALWAYS great!! :) :)
her accents were awesome... and she did them soo well.. :) and i was really really cool to see her play a bad guy! i loved that! she should do it more often! haha!! :)
and all the people i was with said they loved it, and they are going to see it again when it comes out! and thats exactly what i want to hear! that kinda stuff just makes me soo happy.. and half didnt really know who Piper was, so, they didnt just go for her (like me.. hehe.. ;) ) no, but i wanted to see it too, cuz it looked really funny! :)
it was one of the funniest movies that i've seen it a long time! and thats really cool! i just cant wait to see it again... but we still havta wait a while...
and i also told them to tell all their friends about it too... and thats what i'm gonna do too! Because if a lot of people go see it, then it will do good.. and thats what i want! :) and i'm going to see it again... FOR SURE!! no doubt about that! :)
and we havta support Piper too... of course.... ;) :) she's ONLY the GREATEST actress there is!! :) :)
so, MAKE SURE you guys go see it! it was hilarious! you're gonna like it! and tell everyone you know too! :)
Xenophobic?.......2002-08-21
This movie is just about some preppy girl from France who gets all the attention and gets envied by the person she butted out... This movie title is so racist and demeaning against the country of France that it should be banned! They are slapping her BECAUSE she is French! That crosses the line...

When Molly McCorckle (Goddard) learns that Jimmy's uncle is the notorius C.J. Haskell, she becomes upset about it. She thinks of him as a trickster, and as a result, in a radio program she announces Jimmy will give away $1000 in cash to someone. Jimmy is faced with a tough decision: how to give away the money. If he doesn't, he coul be fined and imprisoned. After many tries, he thinks up a way. He'll give it away by telephone. The winner, when they call them up, is speechless and so is his wife. Mrs. McCorckle, C.J., Jimmy, and Molly all reunite on the radio program in a triumphant-sounding finale.
The sound could be better, but an excellent film to enjoy anytime. Upbeat!

Funny movie.......2002-08-01
When a very young Jimmy Stewart's music store fails, he goes to the big city to help his uncle run his factory. Jimmy gets involved with the musicians next to the factory. It's a Hatfield/McCoy feud between the uncle and the neighbors.
Since Jimmy Stewart is in love with neighbor, Paulette Goddard, he has to bring the two families together.
Although my DVD version has very poor sound, the movie is a delightful comedy. It has a wonderful ending and many good laughs.
