Michael Winterbottom is no stranger to literary adaptation. Both Jude and The Claim were drawn from works by Thomas Hardy. Nor is the versatile filmmaker a stranger to the post-modern romp, like 24 Hour Party People. In that paean to Manchester's music scene, Steve Coogan was Factory honcho Tony Wilson. In Winterbottom's take on Laurence Sterne's digressive The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, the prolific helmer combines literature with lunacy and brings Coogan back as the titular character--and then some. Coogan doesn't just portray the 18th century squire, but his father Walter and insecure actor "Steve Coogan." It's a film about the making of a film, effortlessly shifting between Tristram's tumultuous birth and his frustrated adulthood--bogged down in the writing of his life story--and between fiction and (what appears to be) fact. There are no end to the worries on and off the set: Coogan worries his heels aren't high enough, Rob Brydon worries his teeth are too yellow, and Coogan's girlfriend (Kelly Macdonald) worries she isn't seeing enough of him. It may sound like Spike Jonze's Adaptation, but in spirit, it more closely resembles Tony Richardson's Tom Jones. Coogan and his co-stars, particularly Naomie Harris as the ultimate film nut, Gillian Anderson as the American brought in to boost the project's profile, and Brydon as Tristram's Uncle Toby are as game for the challenge as their fearless leader. Consequently, Tristram Shandy isn't just one of Winterbottom's best films--it's one of the year's best. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Michael Winterbottom?s TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY is a rollicking, inventive adaptation of the notoriously unfilmable British comic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, written by Laurence Sterne. Crammed with literary jokes and dark humor, and aided by stellar performances by Jeremy Northam, Rob Brydon and Naomie Harris, Shandy?s warped tales reveal far more about himself than any conventional autobiography.

3 out of 5 stars A film about making films.......2007-04-23

This film starts off as an 18th romp and just when you are getting tired of it veers off into a film about the MAKING of an 18th century romp.

It has many sly comments to make about film-making - vain actors, cheapskate producers, crazy technical consultants...

Like many of these types of films it is amusing but leaves one ultimately unsatisfied as you have the carpet pulled out from you too many times.

Another interesting film from the hardworking Michael Winterbottom.

1 out of 5 stars THE BEST ADVICE YOU WILL RECEIVE TODAY (EXCEPT FOR NO ONE OVER THE AGE OF 5 SHOULD WEAR A STRIPED TEE SHIRT).......2007-04-20

This is my good deed for the day. Save your money, increase your pleasureable hours...do not buy, watch or rent this movie. Please understand, I love movies. My favorites range from Olivia De Haviland in The Heiress to Love Actually and everything in between (ie: Harry Potter, Star Wars, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood etc etc etc). Tristam Shandy a cock and bull story was an incomprehensible mess. It was not funny, it was not interesting, it was not touching, amusing, warm or anything one wants from a movie. Even a nice scare (watch Julie Harris in the original The Haunting for a 1st class scare) is worth ones time but not this disaster of a movie.
Anyway, forgive me for the aformentioned striped tee shirt warning, I could not help myself. This might be the worst movie I have seen in quite a while. It was even worse than Eragon and that was BAD.

3 out of 5 stars A Shambling Mess!.......2007-04-04

First, I confess to not having read the novel, although I am familier with some works of the period, the literary style, and the history of that time. This movie is trying very hard to be something that it is not; which is good comedy. There is a strong effort to have a sardonic humor which seems to fall flat. There seems a bizarre combo here of Monty Python with FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN. Both syles mix the past with the present, or the on scene off scene moments. Humor is brought into the realms of the surreal, which can work sometimes, but here it seems to fall flat on its face.

There is too much emphasis on the current day situations of the actors. Perhaps this is some attempt to match the feelings of the book in some strange way, but I certainly did not get it. I think the production could have been as witty and sardonic if it had not shown the modern set, but just stuck to the story itself. I am sure a more satisfying way to portray the unique mood of this novel could have been conveyed to the viewer without the choatic mess we have here. And where is the epic seige of Namur in 1695? Wasn't this in the original novel? This was one of the key seiges of the Dutch wars against Louis XIV in his efforts of expansion. Too see all these movie people with their off-hand attitudes confirms my views of how history often suffers in their so-called creative hands. Reminds me of the cute little film with Alan Alda SWEET LIBERTY which also conveys how films distort and twist historical facts around, let alone the spirit of an old novel from the past.

Cinema students might like the production shots, and all the politics invovled on the set, but otherwise there is little to recommend this choatic, messy affair. You will need something to calm your senses after watching all the confused activity that leads to no where in it. Not a satisfying movie.

3 out of 5 stars An accurate period piece... not.......2007-03-20

The classic novel by Laurence Sterne is best described in this movie: "This is a postmodern novel before there was any modernism to be post about."

So it sounded pretty disastrous that a film was being adapted from it. Actually, half a film -- the other film is a mockumentary about a film crew desperaately trying to make some kind of movie, out of a book with way too much material. It's wickedly clever, but there's too little Tristram Shandy and too much about the shoes.

While his mother is in labor, a grown Tristram Shandy (Steve Coogan) narrates the backdrop of his life -- his awkward conception, the farcical circumstances of his birth, early penile injury, his uncle's obsessions and (ahem) war wounds, and the circumstances of being named Tristram (and not Trismegistus, which is even worse).

But then we cut to the real world, where a film crew is filming the whole thing. Star Steve Coogan (himself) and director Michael Winterbottom (Jeremy Northam) are struggling to make this novel as true to the spirit of Stern's book as possible. The problem is, there's WAY too much material, and everyone wants different aspects -- love story, battle, his own character -- to stand out as the MAIN part of the story. Will the movie be funny? A sell-out? A big confusing mess?

Filming an unfilmable book is usually either going to be a disaster or a masterpiece -- for the latter, look at "Lord of the Rings." But "Tristram Shandy" hovers somewhere in the middle, courtesy of its mockumentary storyline, and some pointed mockery of the studio bigwigs.

Basically, the bigwigs interfere and insist on stars -- such as Gillian Anderson, who barely makes it to the final cut -- and hoard money, because the movie is too quirky for their tastes. Meanwhile, the stars quibble about minutiae (like shoe height), and real-life director Michael Winterbottom deliberately blurs the lines of fantasy and reality, letting one seep into another. And it has Coogan in a giant plastic womb.

And there's an extra kudos for the dialogue. Half of it is deliciously witty modern stuff ("The thing is, I can't act..." "I know that." "... with Gillian Anderson. I have a proper sexual thing for Gillian Anderson. I covet her"), but there's a whole different style for Tristram. He tends to have these faux-serious metafictional monologues, which end up being very funny ("That is a child actor, pretending to be me. I'll be able to play myself later").

The problem? Well, there's too much of Coogan and not enough Shandy, especially in the second half. It would have improved the movie dramatically to cut some of this stuff about Coogan flirting with Jennie out, because it's really quite dull compared to Tristram. When the fantasy/reality starts leaning too heavily into reality, the movie starts sagging. Big time.

Coogan does a pretty good job playing himself, but he's much better as Tristram/Walter -- arch, wry and kind of inconsiderate. Rob Brydon is enormous fun as himself/Toby, and Naomie Harris is fairly good as a movie nut who specializes in arty German cinema, and not much else. Anderson isn't in the movie for long, but her "equipment" scene is gutsplittingly funny.

"Tristram Shandy - A Cock and Bull Story" is a very funny film, but one bogged down by too much reality (and Coogan). Entertaining, witty and strange.

5 out of 5 stars Pre-postmodern . . ........2007-03-19

The ads for this film show Steve Coogan in period costume sitting in a director's chair with a cell phone in his hand and wearing trainers. That willful mix of past and present should be a dead give away. Laurence Sterne's post-modern novel (written as we are told well before the modern novel) finds its way to the screen as a kind of making-of documentary often found on DVDs. Coogan addresses the audience much as Sterne does, telling the life story of Tristram Shandy and discovering that the events of life proceed forward faster than you can possibly record them. And since identifying first causes requires moving backward rather than forward in time, any expectations of narrative can be frustrated even further. We get to witness the title character's conception, his birth (numerous times), his christening, and a rather ugly incident from his childhood involving a window sash and a tender body part.

Much of the rest of the film, in modern dress, concerns the cast and supposed crew of the film being made - Jeremy Northam playing a slick director and Kelly Macdonald as Coogan's long-suffering girlfriend with a perpetually squalling baby. The off-camera debates and struggles over the direction of the film provide the chief dramatic conflict, and it is not incidental. The film even starts in make-up where Coogan gets a false nose while arguing with co-star Rob Brydon over the nature of the credit he should be getting. Coogan's droll and earnest persona, delivered often in a kind of confused, pained deadpan, is fun to watch, and the chaotic process of film-making calls to mind other films of the genre, e.g., Truffaut's "Day For Night." Good fun, but don't expect too much of Laurence Sterne.

5 out of 5 stars Which hour will be your last?.......2006-10-16

This film is not exactly what I expected, but even though I was a little disappointed, I liked the film. It's the story of a young gay man named Kees (the adorable Geert Hunserts) who is bullied by his all boy dutch school mates for being gay. He sets out to lure the ringleader of his bullies for a little one-on-one. His aim is to make Charel either love him or fight him. Hunserts give a shining performance and shows off a little more of his talents as well in a locker room scene. Great casting, superb acting, unusual plot but it will hold your attention. I could have written a better ending but all in all, I liked it and highly recommend it.

Good video, good drama but very VERY disturbing!

You want the "nitty gritty" of gay adolescents? This is the video to add.

4 out of 5 stars Spelen of Stevern.......2002-01-02

A beautiful movie which examines the emotions of Kees, an intellectual lonely teen who clearly falls in love with a more
street wise class mate. His friend Charel does not have the intellectual acumen to see above the society he currently lives in, which is to obey the laws of the norm. As a consequence
there is a clash of two different worlds and unrequited love.
It is a sad end which many gay teens fear will happen to them and of course it does. It happened then as it does now.
Maybe time changes everything: maybe not; I listen to each tick of the clock as the tears fall as snow upon frosted ground.

    3 out of 5 stars Low-key drama rewards patience.......2000-11-24

Frank Krom's impressively doom-laden Dutch drama "To Play or To Die" (Spelen of Sterven, 1990), based on a short story by Anna Blaman, has made a welcome appearance on DVD courtesy of Water Bearer Films. But it's somewhat alarming to discover that this short feature (it runs a mere 46m 50s!) has arrived on disc in a no-frills edition, priced the same as any mainstream DVD. The film originally premiered on VHS along with two other gay shorts under the umbrella title "Boys on Film" (vol. 2), and many potential customers may be unwilling to pay full price for this somewhat abbreviated presentation. But interested viewers are urged to suspend judgment and check the film out for themselves - "To Play or To Die" is a grim, unyielding examination of teenage emotions, played out against the stark backdrop of a Dutch boys' school.

The film focuses on the plight of Kees (Geert Hunaerts), a bright, handsome kid, crippled by shyness, whose life is devastated by a group of school bullies. Nevertheless, Kees is attracted to the ringleader Charel (Tjebbo Gerritsma), a beautiful thug whose macho posturing is little more than a show for his like-minded circle of friends. Kees invites him back to his (Kees') home when his parents are away, ostensibly to take revenge and seduce the older boy, but Charel's inability to drop the pretence and succumb to Kees' infatuation leads to a painful conclusion for them both. Or does it?

Beautifully photographed in muted colors by Nils Post (an accomplished cinematographer who also shot the highly controversial "For a Lost Soldier" in 1992), the film takes place in an emotionally desolate world where the characters are unable to connect with one another in any kind of meaningful context. Gerritsma and Hunaerts are superb as tormentor and tormented, respectively, with Hunaerts in particular giving a truly committed performance, especially towards the end of the film during a moment of (non-explicit, non-salacious) sexual candor. "To Play or to Die" is NOT homophobic, as some have suggested; it's simply unwilling to play the Hollywood game of providing its viewers with easy answers and a neat resolution. Gay filmmakers have a responsibility to depict the broad range of experiences which affect their community, and that means confronting the harsh realities of their daily lives as well as their triumphs over adversity. Some gay men are driven to tragic extremes by circumstances beyond their control, and failure to address these issues on film would make for a very one-sided view of an extremely complex subject. As such, the film may not be a pleasant experience for some, but it dares to be bleak and uncompromising when others might have hidden behind wish-fulfilment fantasies. That's honesty, not homophobia.

In any event, Krom's rich visual style distinguishes the film from many of its American counterparts, and the expert editing (by Krom and Sander Vos) maintains a keen sense of rhythm amidst the slow-burning tensions inherent in the drama. Incredibly, Krom (whom the packaging informs us was once an assistant to Paul Verhoeven) doesn't appear to have directed anything since, and his subsequent involvement in filmmaking has been relegated to technical support only. That's a real shame, because "To Play or To Die" seemed to herald a bright new talent on the European movie scene, especially in light of the New Queer Cinema movement which emerged from the US shortly after this film was made, boosting the production of gay-themed movies on an international scale.

Water Bearer's non-anamorphic presentation is framed at approximately 1.66:1 and is derived from a print that's beginning to show signs of age (the faded color scheme isn't entirely an artistic choice). The overly-large subtitles are permanent and the sound format is two-channel stereo, though the soundstage rarely expands beyond an appropriately melancholic score by Kim Hayworth and Ferdinand Bakker. The disc isn't regionally coded, and I suspect Water Bearer'sprint was derived from a PAL master at 25fps, in which case the original running time would be 48m 47s.

4 out of 5 stars A Brave and Deeply Disturbing Movie That Deserves a Wider Audience.......2006-02-15

Billy Hayes may be best known for his novel cum 1978 film 'Midnight Express' which detailed his tortured life in a Turkish prison. But here Hayes turns his penchant for grit and the raw surface of the bigotry of gang violence and amateur boxing into a tale about the intense struggles young men from the dark side of the tracks have in accepting their sexuality. It is a tough story, never flinching on reality or detail, but it drives its message home like a stake through the chest.

Travis Coleman (Bret Roberts) is a handsome young amateur boxer, very much in the closet as a gay man, whose best friend Jacko (Brian Austin Green) is a ne're-do-well gay basher who, though dedicated to his friend's future as a boxer, is equally dedicated to street fighting anyone who questions the asexual closeness of their friendship. Travis has a girlfriend Annie (Wendy Fowler) who disapproves of Travis' friendship with Jacko. Travis is torn between caring for his abused mother (Kay Lenz), training with his fight manager Pascoe (Greg Mullavy), maintaining his high maintenance friendship with Jacko, and coming to grips with his moments of self discovery that his true physical needs are in the 'clinch' during a fight when he recognizes (terrified) that he is sexually attracted to men. When he fights Sangster (Christian Payne) a 'Northie' (we have no idea which town this is except that it has a Northside and Southside in conflict) he is sexually aroused, a fact that Sangster confides in his Northie buddies. Homophobic epithets are sprayed on the cities walls and Jacko attacks the perpetrators, killing gay bashers in a mutually destructive series of conflicts. When Travis wins an important fight that will allow him to move to Las Vegas, he is told by everyone to ditch Jacko, but Jacko has just murdered to defend Travis' honor, complicating Travis' life even further. He confesses to Jacko that he is indeed is gay and the two face dire consequences from this revelation.

The script is heavily reliant on gross language and while the words constantly used are story appropriate, the language becomes overbearing. This is a film with a lot of violence, one that while many films about same sex attraction are becoming more popular with the public, manages to remind us that many sexually conflicted people continue to face odious odds in being who they are.

Both Brian Austin Green and Bret Roberts give wholly credible performances as so the bulk of the supporting cast. The film is shot with a gritty edge (Scott Seidman has done a terrific Production Design) and Director Hayes never for a minute lets us forget the dire level of existence in which all of the characters live. COCK AND BULL STORY ranks with Hayes' own MIDNIGHT EXPRESS as a story that despite its grungy details needs to make the public aware of a life very dark. It is an unjustly underrated film. Grady Harp, February 06

4 out of 5 stars real, young, edgey, sexy, queer.....boys boxing?.......2005-08-04

Director Billy Hayes hits a home run with this jaw-clenching story about two best friends growing up in the tough-as-nails south side of Chicago. Travis is a young, talented, sexy boxer with a hard-core bully of a best friend, Jacko (Brian Green, to all you 90210 fans). When Travis comes out as gay, the buddies are faced with many forms of homophobia -- both internal and external. Their story, however, turns out to be quite the hot one, laced with passionate desire, intense yet crumpling masculinity, and sexy fears.

"Cock and Bull Story" is a brave challenge to the easily digestible, non-threatening image of gay men that have been regurgitated at us from all facets of the media. In
a time when "Will and Grace" and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" hurdle image after image of happy-go-lucky, successful gay characters, this flick is an absolute breath of fresh air.

The characters in this movie are genuine and seem to leap off the screen. Balancing real, young, queer life in a tough neighborhood, the sexy edge of boxing, and the
inevitable, atypical love story that unfolds, this is a hot must see.

    3 out of 5 stars worth watching, 3 1/2 stars.......2004-07-31

Travis, a naive, likable, young (and very good looking) boxer, slowly recognizes his homosexuality. At the same time, his jerk of a best friend, Jacko, is gradually consumed by homophobia--seemingly aggravated by his feelings for Travis. The film is well shot and thoughtfully considers the jagged border between same sex attraction and homophobia. Although there are many subtle elements, there are also some unnecessarily didactic, "hit you over the head" (sorry) aspects. I found Jacko completely unsympathetic. He presented too strong of a counterpoint. Even though people like him exist, I don't care to spend time with them and had difficulty understanding why Travis would either. This caused a "reality gap" for me, as did the uneven and stagey acting of some of the secondary characters.
Nevertheless, the more I thought about the movie the more I liked it. A second viewing helped.
Those who would enjoy a more traditional "love story" plot in a boxing film should try LIKE IT IS.

This double dvd set is about the best i have ever seen about a band .The first dvd covers the live set at morcombe 2003 .The second dvd has a trip down memory lane ,as well as live tracks from around various locations .What shines through the whole of the twin dvd set is the bands down to earth attitude .They are witty while still being down to earth .if i had to recomend a dvd to get to show an example of true punk at its very best this would be the one .

Whenever anyone asks me, of all the places we've filmed, where is the best fishing? Without a moments hesitation, I tell them the east cape. For over 15 years, we've been coming down here, and even with all the increased pressure, the fishing along this stretch of the peninsula just keeps getting better. Due in no small part to the Van Warmer Family's policy of practicing CPR for all billfish caught from their resorts. catch, photograph and Release is becoming a way of life along Baja, and the benefits can be seen on almost every trip.In addition to the outstanding offshore fishing, including the blue marlin highlighted in Cock-A-Doodle Blue, the inshore fishing along the endless white sand beaches south of Hotel Punta Colorada, are without a doubt, the best in the world for hunting roosters. Punta Colorada isn't known as the Roosterfish Capital of the World for nothing. So join us as we venture off the beach for the blues, and one of the most amazing releases ever filmed, before working the inshore waters for roosters topping the 50-pound markWe all share one plant, one ocean and have only one chance, so let's get it right. Do your part, help assure the future of our fisheries for generations to come, practice CPR...Catch, Photograph and Release.
