4 out of 5 stars Title Sounds like a Comedy but this is Definetly a Pre-code Drama.......2007-07-03

A comedy this is not.

This is an interesting little film that could not have been made after after the code crackdown. The story line is an amoral one if not down right immoral. Gable plays the hero--a crooked gambler. Lombard plays a had-it-up-to-here small town girl ready to escape at the first offer. Lucky girl, Gable is the first offer. They marry on impulse, he thinking it is for laughs while she sees good in him that no one else can see, espcially those of us watching the film.

He draws her into his crooked gambling schemes then tries to shake her but see won't leave him. I suppose, if we stretch the point, her love for him redeems him some. Can one be a little bit redeemed?

Subject matter, a lack of moral characters, shower and clothes-changing scenes and see thru dresses make this film that was not shown on TV often I am sure. But as the only screen pairing of Gable and Lombard it is worth owning.

The only pairing of Lombard and Gable finally on dvd - thank you Universal. What about the Carole Lombard Collection Volume 2? (Bolero, Rumba, I Take This Woman, Swing High Swing Low, No One Man, The Eagle and the Hawk).

4 out of 5 stars Not Even Remotely the Bomb It's Reputation Suggests.......2006-06-15

The critical lambasting this film received on it's initial release in 1976 is inexplicable. Though certainly not a classic love story it is most definitely above average. The film's only failing that I can see are some slapstick moments that fall flat. Where it succeeds is in the scenes of intimacy between Gable and Lombard. James Brolin is more than adequate as Clark Gable and Jill Clayburgh is absolutely radiant as Carole Lombard. The chemistry between the two is palpable which makes the relationship believable. At times I lost sight of the fact that these were two of the most famous celebrities in America and that they were ordinary people in love. The film also contains a terrific turn by one of my favorite character actors, Allen Garfield, as Louis B. Mayer. Now if only they would release on DVD another Hollywood bio released in 1976, "W.C. Fields and Me", with Rod Steiger. Trivia note: Clayburgh hosted "Saturday Night Live" at the time of this film's release and took part in a parody of the film, "Grable and Lombard".

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Movie But Could Have Been Better.......2005-10-12

This is a really enjoyable film to watch but it contains many inaccuracies. Lombard comes across as a foul mouthed, ill educated woman when she was the opposite. Lombard was very much a thinking woman who was a devout New Deal Democrat who earned the admiration for FDR and Eleanor. Duesenberg driving Gable (He owned 4!) although a gifted actor was never a Hollywood intellect like Lombard, Frederic March, Edward G. Robinson and other activist actors of the day. Many people hated James Brolin in this film but I think in 1976 he was the best choice. I did not like Clayburgh as Lombard. I am shocked that Hollywood has not made a real epic movie about the couple. This 1976 TV movie and a French Documentary seem the only information on this iconic couple of Hollywood's golden era. This may be due to the fact after Lombard's death Gable never spoke publicly about his late wife except one time in 1943 when he along with Lombard's brothers and Louis B. Mayer went to christen the Liberty Ship "Carole Lombard".

1 out of 5 stars this is the love story that was Gable and Lombard?.......2005-01-21

Total fiction, and that's too bad, as it was a story worthy of telling. Badly miscast, Lombard comes off as a shrill, foul-mouthed (while she had the vocabulary of a sailor, Gable once said "it was music coming from her.")shallow wench and Gable is portrayed as a dimwit. Neither is true - Lombard was a warm, caring, giving woman and Gable had more than a veneer of sophistication. The film invents situations, or warps real ones out of recognition, never touching on Gable's infidelities, which were so painful to Lombard - in fact, to draw a simple circle around a very complex issue, Lombard died because Gable couldn't keep his pants zipped, and the film doesn't touch on that at all. To its credit, it does try to capture the essence of their love story, but it didn't have to invent, distort, and mutilate "The Great Legend" of Hollywood love stories.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood's torrid love tale of Gable & Lombard now on DVD!.......2004-04-27

This 70's movie was lost and now has returned to Anamorphic (automatically adjusts to TV size)WideScreen 16:9 DVD!!! There are no extra features with this DVD.

The Golden Years of Hollywood (1930 - 1960) had the great love stories on and off the silver screen. There was Tracy and Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall and Burton and Taylor but none of these were as hot, steamy and as controversal as "Gable and Lombard". Hollywood through their eyes tries to capture this passion with a comedy/drama of the wildest exaggerations. Even so the love story cannot be denied.

It was the 1930's and Clark Gable was known as the "King" and Carole Lombard was the highest paid actress and known as the "Queen" of the screwball comedy (or the black comedy - a bizarre style of comedy that evolved from the Depression. Taking a negative situation and making it into an ironic humorous story). James Brolin as Gable and Jill Clayburgh as Lombard do an exceptional job bringing these two dynamic superstars to the big WideScreen. Lombard was a real blonde beauty, talented, single, very defensive, could not make romantic/marraige commitments, a tomboy, drank, smoked cigars and a party animal. Gable was handsome, talented, mans man, had married older domineering women and a wild partying womanizer.

This movie although very fictionalized captures the essence of "THE GREATEST HOLLYWOOD ROMANCE". Gable and Lombard fell hard for each other and Gables wife would not grant him a divorce. (She loved the prestige of being Mrs. Clark Gable). This movie has us journey the long road that Gable & Lombard spent trying to make that utilmate commitment, marriage. Finally through public (who loved these two), Hollywood moguls and legal pressure Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married. This true Hollywood romance only lasted for less than 3 years when Lombard was tragically killed in an airplane crash returning from a World War II bond drive in her home state of Indiana. Gable never got over her death.

This is a must see movie. Watch this fun loving torrid romance a true Hollywood fairy tale. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars INNACURATE BUT ENJOYABLE MOVIE.......2004-04-13

i was so happy that this finally came out on dvd. i have been searching for it for years even buying a horrible copy of it on ebay. i was one of the first in line to see this movie the day it came out in 1976. i could not wait because i was such a huge clark gable fan and a fan of the gable-lombard love story. i will agree with the previous reviewer that jill clayburgh is very good in this movie, in fact i would say she is the reason for seeing it. however, james brolin (or mr streisand as i like to refer to him) is pretty bad as gable. i will say there are times in the movie that he could be his double but his portrayal of gable as a country bumpkin is almost laughable. the production however is first rate but again 98% of this story is made up. for instance, gable was not in the service when lombard was killed. she was killed in january of 1942 and he did not join the service until august of that year. also as far as i know their first meeting did not result in a food fight as in the movie. their first meeting was in a little know gem of a movie "no man of her own" in 1932. they did not meet again until the mayfair ball in 1936. but they did hide their relationship from their fans and the press and there was an article printed in photoplay magazine call "unmarried husband and wives" that did "out" them as living together as well as barbara stanwyck and robert taylor and paulette goddard and charles chaplan. i think the most ludicrous scene in the movie is lombard putting on the red dress and parading down the aisle while clark is supposedly speaking to some ladies group.. WRONG... DID NOT HAPPEN..all in all it is an enjoyable movie and a sincere love story. i just have to try to forget that it is supposed to be a truthful telling of the gable-lombard union which it is not.. i just wish when they told stories of REAL people they would tell the truth and not rewrite history.. but i do recommend seeing the movie for what it is a purely fictional account of a truly magical couple.. then if you want the real story of the gable-lombard romance read the book "gable and lombard" by warren g. harris.

Description

A double feature, each starring an icon of the 1920s! The legendary Louise Brooks plays a fetching girl-next-door whose friend's marriage to a ne'er-do-well spirals them into poverty in "The Show Off" (1926, 82 min.), a well-made Paramount film which continues to impress decades after its initial release. Clara Bow as a fast-living jazz baby with a heart of gold ignites the screen in "The Plastic Age" (1925, 73 min.), a raucous collegiate comedy of Prohibition-era youth. A very young Clark Gable can be glimpsed in several scenes as one of Prescott College's charismatic revelers.

5 out of 5 stars The Show Off.......2007-01-09

The product's arrival was very timely even though I placed my order during one of the busiest mail delivery times of the year. The product was in excellent condition, and the service was excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Delightfully entertaining.......2004-11-24

This double-feature DVD is very enjoyable to watch, not only for the two popular "Jazz Age" stars, Louise Brooks and Clara Bow, but for the overall light and 'feel-good' themes. Despite being of the light entertainment variety, both films have a good story and message with a satisfying ending, and all other aspects of both films are of high quality. There might be a few little disappointments however: while stunning and unmissable, Louise Brooks plays only a small part in "The Show Off", and the picture quality of "The Plastic Age" is nowhere near as good as the pristine quality of the first film. These things aside, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Show Off" and Ford Sterling's entertaining performance as the big-mouthed braggart who gets on everyone's nerves except for Amy, who thinks he's wonderful and ends up marrying him despite her family's disapproval. It's not all laughs, though: Amy's family falls on bad times and "The Show Off" gets a chance to use his big-talk talent for a good purpose, for a change. Very nicely and expertly directed by Malcolm St Clair who made a name for himself as a top director in the late 1920s.

"The Plastic Age" story is just perfect for 'the IT girl' Clara Bow, who steals the show with her charming playfulness in the role of a popular girl who flirts with college boys. One naive and serious college student falls for her and, consequently, falls into bad habits of late night parties which badly affect his college performance. This one also has a nice and happy ending though, and both of these films are sure to make you smile. The musical accompaniment, while not Jazz of that period, is nice orchestral music well suited to each film.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent fun.......2002-05-10

Great silent movie! The DVD is EXCELLENT quality. I wasn't sure if it was correct projection speed when I ordered it, but it turned out to be - and what a movie! The orchestral score is perfect. All the characters are developed nicely and this was a great role for the leading actor; memorable screen presence. The movie wouldn't be nearly as good without Louise Brooks, but I was hoping for more screen time from her.
This is a great movie from the Roaring Twenties with a lighthearted plot that is effective and fun.

4 out of 5 stars Brooks and Bow.......2001-08-22

Both of the films on this DVD are enjoyable and worth seeing, but neither can be classed as being among the great films of the silent era. These films are no doubt typical of the sorts of films people saw on a day-to-day basis. The silent films which are most seen today are the classics so it is interesting, for a change, to see some more routine programmers.

The Show Off is the story of a truly obnoxious man played by Ford Sterling who is pompous and foolish. For some reason, which is not at all clear, Lois Wilson decides to marry him. This leads to all sorts of comic misadventures and disasters, including a very funny car journey with the incompetent Sterling causing chaos on the streets of Philadelphia. Louise Brooks is not the star of this film, but she has enough screen time to satisfy her fans. She is easily the best actor in the cast and, of course, looks stunning with her familiar bobbed hair. The print of The Show Off is very good. It is black and white and really clear enabling all the details of the film to be seen. The print shows hardly any damage, but there are some brief scenes where the sprocket holes become visible. The music by Timothy Brock is entertaining and fits in well with the mood and the period of the film.

The Plastic Age is a college film. It concerns the attempts made by Donald Keith to juggle his studies and ambition to become a track and football star, with his romancing a `fast' jazz age girl, who else but Clara Bow. Keith plays a somewhat insipid character especially when compared to Bow who is so vivacious. It's hard to see what she sees in him when all he seems to say is `Gee.' Bow was a marvellous star, but this film was made before she really hit the big time. Thus although she has a decent amount of screen time, this remains a film about Keith, which is a pity as she is far more interesting than he is. One of the great pleasures of the film is the chance to see Henry B. Walthall (the little Colonel in Birth of a Nation). He plays Keith's father, and is wonderful as a stern but loving father concerned that his son devotes his time to study and sport rather than girls. The print of The Plastic Age is unfortunately not nearly as good as that of The Show Off. It is tinted mainly in sepia but using blue for night scenes. It is an acceptable print but lacks the clarity and detail of the print used for The Show Off. The Plastic Age is accompanied by a good score performed by Eric Beheim. This is a good value DVD with two entertaining silent films showcasing some of the early work of two of the great silent stars, Louise Brooks and Clara Bow. Fans of these two actresses should not be disappointed.
