Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the '30s and '40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.

Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet math genius who ignores his gift in favor of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past, and as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. --Dave McCoy

Description

A true motion picture phenomenon, this triumphant story was nominated for 9 Academy Awards(R) -- winning Oscars for Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor) and hot newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Best Original Screenplay). The most brilliant mind at America's top university isn't a student ... he's the kid who cleans the floors! Will Hunting (Damon) is a headstrong, working-class genius who's failing the lessons of life. After one too many run-ins with the law, Will's last chance is a psychology professor (Williams), who might be the only man who can reach him! With acclaimed performances from Academy Award(R)-nominee Minnie Driver (GROSSE POINTE BLANK) and Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) -- you'll find GOOD WILL HUNTING a powerful and unforgettable movie experience!

5 out of 5 stars More Like Great Will Hunting.......2007-07-04

This movie is by far the best Matt Damon or Ben Affleck movie I have ever seen. It's a touching story of a twenty something kid who wasn't raised with a lot and he turns out to be a math genius. Excellent movie.

3 out of 5 stars Could've been better with different cast.......2007-05-30

Movies can be placed, you could say, into 3 categories:

1. Movies to be seen in a theater or owned on DVD
2. Movies to rent
3. Movies to ignore

This one, for me, falls into the second category. Who would believe Matt Damon is some blue collar genius? Damon is not a good actor in my opinion. Ben Affleck is worse. Robin Williams is obnoxious. This film used the wrong actors.

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best Films EVER........2007-05-21

One of the most affecting movies in my life I've ever seen. This movie is an example of why movies can be good, why they can change you're life. One of my favorite quote's from the movie is: "You're sitting on the winning lottery ticket and your too afraid to cash it in." Not only one of my all time favorite films but Elliot Smith who's music they used PERFECTLT for the film is one of my favorite artists. Do yourself a favor and see this film.

5 out of 5 stars Not very realistic, but very idealistic.......2007-05-19

Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank
Not many people can ever say that they have been in any kind of situation like that of
Will Hunting and the Field's Medalist , let alone that of a psychologist faced with
helping a scared by society genius. One thing is important here:
no professor that I have ever met is going to put himself out
for someone not in his elite class. Such behavior in our society is taboo.
He would be endangering his own position in society
and such men don't get to that high a point by not playing the social games very seriously.
The closest that anyone came to this level of idealism and selflessness in history is Dr. Hardy
in his mentorship of Ramanujan.

John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars The John Hughes universe.......2007-06-13

Many who were teenagers in the 80s see Breakfast Club the way some saw Rebel Without A Cause in the 50s. Both movies are about teenage angst. Most of my "grasshopper" (Kung Fu) moments in my life came from the 80s. That said, this film has it's merits but also it's flaws. One actor makes this movie great. Judd Nelson. He steals the show in every scene. Even when he isn't talking, you are watching his reactions. His performance is perfect. I believe him as a troubled teen even though he's 24(!) at the time of the filming. Another great performance, often overlooked, is Paul Gleason as Vernon. He's dislikeable and believable. Makes you wonder if Vernon was like Brian and who grew up to be authority to get 'even' with guys like Bender and Andy. Just an idea. Gleason's performance is a solid one.
The flaws include the slang (no one then or now calls rich kids "richies". They are either preppies or yuppies.), the inane stories (Andy's locker room story and Brian's flare gun story fail to hold my attention), the fake performances (Brain's forced tears when he says to Clare "&*%$ you") and the continuity shots (Clare and Allison's many hair days during 8 hour detention). The script could've used some fine tuning. Had it been written better, the five students would know each other more even if they aren't friends. The character stereotypes (brain, princess, criminal, jock, and basket case) would mesh with each other. In order words, the five would have more in common with each other instead of coming from five different cliques. Lastly, the term "Breakfast Club" never appeared anywhere until John Hughes coined the phrase. He uses the phrase as if everyone who is in detention is a Breakfast Club member. I would title it something else. A good script doctor would be helpful.
In my opinion, the movie doesn't hold up well today, but it is still entertaining, given it's context. This is the John Hughes universe we are talking about, not the real world.

5 out of 5 stars Intense........2007-04-15

This is an aboslutely amazing movie. Being a teenager, you can really relate to this movie. But adults no doubt can too from their highschool days. You will laugh and maybe cry. The story behind it is truly beautiful. 5 stereotype highschool students end up in detention together and discover after pouring their hearts our to each other, that they have much more in common then they thought. "They only met once, but it changed their lives forever."

4 out of 5 stars How come every teen movie not made in the 80s stinks.......2007-03-26

When I first heard of bfc I don't think I even wanted to see it. Then I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off and one thing led to another. Anyways the point is, this movie is actually fun to watch. All five of these characters are surprisingly believable and not to mention funny. Though this movie is usually considered a "chick flick" I have no problem watching it. Otherwise, besides certian immoral content in the film, that i try to skip anyways, this movie is great! I'm amused by the scenario the characters are put in. I can actually relate to Brian(the nerd). Its kind of scary though, cause he shares my name. As for the rest characters, they just made me laugh to no end. The basket case I found particularly cool. I won't comment on the emotional aspect of the film, but I will say I felt it and just leave it at that. Oh and as a 17 year old, trust me, its great to see teens actually act like teens!!!!! Now a days it seems most teen flicks are bassically movies about sex crazed monsters(no ones REALLY like that). AND IT'S NOT FUNNY, its just kind of grose. So in conclusion, this movie was actually to my surprise good. The BEST PART is when there all dancing to We Are Not Alone by Karla Devito. I never thought in a million years I would like a movie where some jock started crying about how he tapped some kid's bun cheeks together.

P.S. No seriously though, what was up with that bun cheek thing?

3 out of 5 stars Were you ever in detention? .......2007-03-14

I was a good little girl at school; I was never in detention. So I can't identify with this movie at all. Especially an American detention. They were there the whole of Saturday! And the antics they get up to!

I got recommended this by someone I work with, who was playing the Simple Minds on her mp3 player, and I confessed I had no idea who they were. She said they did a song on the soundtrack to this, I said I'd never seen it, and she told me to get it. So I did.

None of the actors have really done much since this film, apart from Emilio Estevez, who is still floating around out there. There's been lots of fuss about a sequel, but I doubt that will ever happen. It doesn't really warrant a sequel. Which means they will make a sequel or a remake. And that will ruin it.

Basically you have five teenage stereotypes - the rebel (Bender), the princess (Claire), the jock (Andy), the brain (Brian), and the outcast (Allison) - who would never normally associate with each other, but they get stuck together in detention. It can be a bit overacted, and a bit melodramatic at times, but yes, it works. My favourite character was the outcast, Allison, played by Ally Sheedy. She actually reminded me quite a lot of myself during high school (and at the beginning of college), hiding behind her fringe, coat, whatever comes to hand, and not speaking to anyone. Her haircut was practically the same as mine too! And the dandruff/snow on the drawing scene was absolutely classic! The reasons they all get into detention are a bit strange as well: Bender: pulls a false fire alarm; Brian: flare gun goes off in his locker; Andy: tapes a guy's butt cheeks together in the locker room; Claire: ditches class to go shopping; and Allison: didn't do anything, she didn't have anything better to do on a Saturday. (That last bit made the character for me.)

The rest of the movie is pretty much forgettable, apart from the dancing sequence, which is so funny.

If you recognise yourself in these characters, or know someone else who was that particular stereotype, then I would recommend getting it. It's easy enough to while away an hour or so watching. It will also show what you're really like depending which character is your favourite. What does your favourite reveal about you? It's a shame I'm not old enough to remember the 80s (ha!) I was born halfway through, and wasn't old enough to know about the whole Rat Pack phenomenon. But if you can pick this up for cheap, I certainly would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie.......2007-03-01

I'm 36 and this is STILL one of my favorite movies of all times. I cannot wait to share it with my children.

Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-06-21

Excellent story line. However, you may be turned off by the old props and sets. Nothing close to what we have today. I'd buy it only if I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars Different sci-fi story..........2007-04-04

This film teaches a lesson from the other side of the political isle than I usually sit, but it tells it well. It is vaguely reminiscent of other films from the 1940's but I can't remember a title. It is a "know thy enemy" film, and teaches about culture clash. I'm not one to respect another culture if it demands it, but if it earns it I do. This film is about two warriors that get stranded together on a dangerously hostile world and have to work together to survive. They learn each other's languages, and culture in a way even a die-hard conservative like me cannot argue with. Perhaps everyone can learn something from this. The film is about right and wrong, and it can change one's perspective. In the end, I remember the audience cheering in the theatres.

4 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-03-09

What a great movie. good time you have watchign this one.
Its a one of a kind movie.
if your a star wars or star gate fan like my girlfriend, you will truly like this movie. its the only sci-fi movie with ''sad'' part in it. really good movie suited for nearly anyone. watch this one with your girlfriend rather then your beer drinking pals.

5 out of 5 stars A must-see for SF lovers.......2007-01-11

Great touching story of friendship between enemies and in this case, species.
Good lesson to learn an apply.
A classic movie I wanted to own and show to my kids.

4 out of 5 stars Different .......2007-01-08

I have seen this movie many times while growing up. Its definately a different approach to Science Fiction, but not too bad. Basically, you get to see how mortal enemies can work out their differences, and work together. A movie with a message.

Italian star and filmmaker Massimo Troisi was dying of heart failure even before this film, his dream project, began production, and he prevailed upon British director Michael Radford (White Mischief) to see him and the film through to the end. (The 40-year-old Troisi, a beloved comic actor in Italy, died the day production wrapped.) Based on true events, Troisi plays a shy postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Through Neruda's example and tutelage, the hero learns to think of his Italian fishing village in lyrical terms, as well as how to talk to women and even find the strength to take his political stands. Sweet as it is, the film finally pushes beyond its charming borders to become an even more complex and poignant story about the pain of growing into one's destiny. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Best Acting Ever.......2007-05-20

Wonderful movie, brilliant actor. A legacy to the world, left by a kind and gentle spirit. One of my all time favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars Dangerous Poems.......2007-05-14

This movie may contain the single greatest scene ever constructed within a modern effort; hint: Tangos. There is also a very dangerous line suitable for theft concerning who art belongs to. Be Careful concerning what can happen to you from a careful study of the themes within this artwork!

5 out of 5 stars A delight!.......2007-03-09

61* is an endearing ode to the baseball days of yore when the press was the enemy, salaries were in check, and breaking records with bat and glove took on Ruthian proportions. In 1961 baseball expanded its season from 154 games to 162, allowing weaker pitching into the major leagues and two New York Yankees teammates--the colorless Roger Maris and golden boy Mickey Mantle--to make an assault on the sport's ultimate record: Babe Ruth's 60 home runs. To add to the stew, baseball commissioner Ford Frick announced any record set in the last eight games of the season wouldn't count toward the official record; records had to be achieved in 154 games.

Director Billy Crystal guarantees success for his movie in the perfect casting of the leads. Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan's religious sniper) is deft as Maris, and Thomas Jane is a perfect Mantle, a superman in a Yankee uniform. Despite the differences between family man Maris and hard-living Mantle, they form a rewarding friendship amid the media and fan frenzy. The shy Maris took the brunt of the storm, even facing boo-birds in his home stadium. Crystal and first-time writer Hank Steinberg keep the pace moving quickly between the field, the locker room, the press box, and the home front. The film never tries to dazzle with more than the facts (and it softens Mantle up a bit), yet it belongs on the short list of grand baseball movies. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another great baseball movie!.......2007-05-29

I think that I have never watched a game of baseball on tv all the way through. I have been to see some great teams play live, including one of the last games with Nolan Ryan pitching. So you could say I'm not a fan, nor am I a complete non fan.

However, I find that I almost always love baseball movies! Bull Duram, The Natural, The Rookie, The Babe, Field of Dreams, Eight Men Out, etc, etc, etc...

Here in "61" is another great Drama, with comedic moments, but more so a touching film, that explores the trials and tribulations of greatness. Watching this fillm is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours!

4 out of 5 stars Still the homerun King.......2007-03-07

I wasn't alive during the chase. Wasn't born until 20 years later. However my father was and his father as well. From what they tell me, it was a great time for baseball. It was a great time to be a baseball fan. Little did I know that in the summer of '98, I'd be going through a chase of my own. Yes, it was a great moment for baseball, and yes it was great to be a fan.

However, as we all now know, the most respected record in all of baseball was tainted soon after by allegations and denials and by the sheer un-believability that 61 and eventually 70 would fall. As baseball fans we went through enormous highs to then go through an enormous low. Some of us are still stuck down there actually.

So a couple of fans of my father's generation decided to come out with a true story of baseball glory. A real chase of monumental proportions was made available to us in the movie, 61. Some of us younger fans were glad we got to see records being broken, but now the majority of us feel cheated. We didn't get to see records being broken. We got to see records being stolen. So what do we have to look back to? What can we say was the greatest moment in baseball history while we were alive? Right now, I can't think of any. This is why I appreciate the efforts of this movie to tell the true-life story of the real chase between Mantle and Maris for Ruth's record. While I was never ther to witness it for myself, I can certainly paint a picture now thanks to Billy Crystal and to the actors involved.

I don't think I can rate this movie based on performances, but I can rate this movie based on facts and what is real. Something whole and pure was brought back to us some 40 years later to remind us of how pure the game used to be. This film is not the greatest film ever made, but if you're a generational baseball fan, this movie stands right next to the likes of Field of Dreams and others who were true to the sport of baseball.

1 out of 5 stars Crystal's "Rewriting of history" is a shameful joke.......2006-12-30

Crystal's rewriting of history does no one any service. The historical scene about Mantle complaining that he "failed" his draft induction physical is laughable at best. Mantle was selected to the all star team that year! He was MVP later! Mantle was known as the "fastest man to first base" at this time, and his complaint that he couldn't serve is a joke. Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams, while in Korea on his SECOND tour of military duty (WWII was his first), stated when he was crash landed his fighter jet, he ran away from it "FASTER THAN MICKEY MANTLE!" Crystal a draft dodger himslf (Vietnam), should be ashamed of this portrayal of Mantle and rewriting history! Disgusting.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2006-11-07

This was a very fast service and the product filled all my expectatives, i recommed this movie and company.

Un servicio muy rapido y competitivo, lleno todas mis expectativas recomiendo a quien sea esta pelicula asi como la compañia.

4 out of 5 stars The M&M Race for the Babe's Single Season Record, SUBERB MOVIE!.......2006-07-26

The Greatest race between two baseball players is told with the direction of big Yankees fan Billy Crystal & suberb performaces from Thomas Jane as #7 Mickey Mantle & Barry Pepper as #9 Roger Maris in the Yankee's 1961 season as the two marvels race to beat Babe Ruth's 1927 single season record of 60 homers. It's a suberb, enthralling, entertaining movie of America's past Time, It's a grand slam triumph & one of most accurate baseball movies ever made. If you liked "Field of Dreams" & "the Natural" witness baseball history at it's finest in the movies with "61*" "ROGER!" "ROGER!"

Sissy Spacek won a much-deserved Oscar for her lead in this entertaining biography of country-music legend Loretta Lynn. British director Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist) brings fine texture to the Kentucky backwoods section of the film, where the teenage Loretta meets her future husband (Tommy Lee Jones), who ultimately pushes her into show business. Lynn's adult life is well covered, from her spouse's philandering to her own on-stage crackups; but between the chapter-and-verse recollections, the script by Thomas Rickman is layered with life and moments of great humor. No wooden portrait, this is a vibrant film made outstanding by the colorful performances of the two leads, as well as Beverly D'Angelo and the Band's Levon Helm. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Levon Helm.......2007-06-27

Levon Helm's performance as Loretta's father has to be one of the all-time best supporting roles in film history. That scene at the railroad station always gets me.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-06-09

Now this is how you make a biography. Even if you're not a big fan of country music, you can't help but appreciate Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Loretta Lynn. From singing her own vocals, to the various stages of Ms. Lynn's life, very impressive. Also true of Beverly D'Angelo as Patsy Cline. These ladies can really belt out a song. Sissy Spacek won the 1980 Academy Award for Best Actress, and deservedly so. Tommy Lee Jones is also fantastic as Loretta's husband. An astounding cast beautifully directed by Michael Apted. Just a feel good film all around.

As a result of viewing this film, I even began following the career of Ms. Lynn, and read her autobiography of the same title. I guess I can now quote Ray Charles on his love of country music, "it's the stories". And no one can tell a story through song like Loretta.

I really love this movie, and appreciate the great transfer to DVD job by Universal Studios.

5 out of 5 stars Moving true story.......2007-05-07

This is a fantastic movie if you like country music, it tells the true story of Loretta Lynn and her stuggle to become a country singer and her close friendship with Patsy Cline. A sad but beautiful movie.

3 out of 5 stars Great Story...................But.......2007-04-11

Alot of bad language..... G**D*** was used a number of times. Caught me off gaurd when watching with children. Especially with PG rating. Without the language would have been 5 star for me.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF ITS KIND! SPACEK IS INCREDIBLE IN THIS!.......2007-04-08

This is about as good as it gets! Not only is the acting superb, but Sissy Spacek sings all Loretta's songs so well.....I bought the sound track to the movie. A classic that gets better with age. The 25th anniversay edition DVD is well worth it! A nice DVD transfer and some interesting extras.

One of the most critically acclaimed films of 1995, this wrenchingly sad but extraordinarily moving drama provides an authentic, superbly acted portrait of two people whose lives intersect just as they've reached their lowest depths of despair. Ben (Nicolas Cage, in an Oscar-winning performance) is a former movie executive who's lost his wife and family in a sea of alcoholic self-destruction. He's come to Las Vegas literally to drink himself to death, and that's when he meets Sera (Elisabeth Shue), a prostitute who falls in love with him--and he with her--despite their mutual dead-end existence. They accept each other as they are, with no attempts by one to change the other, and this unconditional love turns Leaving Las Vegas into a somber yet quietly beautiful love story. Earning Oscar nominations for Best Director (Mike Figgis), Best Adapted Screenplay (Figgis, from John O'Brien's novel) and Best Actress (Shue), the film may strike some as relentlessly bleak and glacially paced, but attentive viewers will readily discover the richness of these tragic characters and the exceptional performances that bring them to life. (In a sad echo of his own fiction, novelist John O'Brien committed suicide while this film was in production.) The DVD features uncut, unrated footage that was not included in the film's theatrical release. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A one-sided love story.......2007-06-28

I watched this movie for the first time last night. While digesting my own impressions, I decided to see what others have thought and so hopped onto Amazon. Reading other reviews today out of curiosity, I am struck by the repeated assertions that this is a mutual love story of Shakespearian proportions.

To me, this love story is entirely one-sided.

When we first meet Sera, she seems very much like a high-priced 'call-girl' who commands hundreds for her services. She describes being routinely abased and abused on the 'job,' but asserts that she's in control. Then we meet her boyfriend/pimp, from whose abuse she has already fled once only to be tracked down. Despite Sera's self-delusion that she's in charge and living a good life, we see evidence of despair and hopelessness as she not only submits to her pimps degradation, but even tries to defend it.

When she encounters Ben, who is introduced as an incredibly self-aware and self-destructive alocholic, it is his treatment of her as a person that finally reveals her own despair to herself. He doesn't want sex--in a touching and rare moment of lucidity, Ben recognizes his own lonliness and will pay a 'hooker' to talk to him for an hour. Sera ends up staying the whole night. With the pimp conveniently killed a few scenes later (my only quibble with the plot in general), Sera decides to 'rescue' Ben. The only problem is, he refuses to be rescued and bluntly demands that she can not ask him to stop, or he will leave.

We know from the outset that Ben won't stop drinking, he doesn't want to stop. Indeed, it seems his body is so enthralled that he can't stop. We see fewer and fewer moments where he is in command of his senses and actions, his compulsive need to drink just to stay conscious--and yet the incredible volumes of alcohol frequently rendering him incoherent--providing a tragic paradox. He drinks to live and lives to drink.

Sera watches his downward spiral, at first enabling in the guise of acceptance, but then with increasing distress. No matter how she tries, she can't break through. At one point she has to douse herself with alcohol to break through his drunken self-absorption, and even that ends in failure as he staggers, falls, and injures himself. Towards the end she begs him to see a doctor, the only time that comes close to her actually breaking her promise about not asking him to stop. And he refuses.

Sera admits that she's 'using him,' and I think that could be true. In saving Ben from himself, Sera finds a purpose in her own meaningless life. But as her failure to reach him becomes more obvious and his selfish course continues unabated, we see Sera's self-confidence waver. We see criticism from others that at the start wouldn't even have registered, now pummeling her. A new despair sets in as Sera realizes Ben can't be saved despite her love, because he doesn't love himself.

And while he says he loves her, he can't pull himself out of the bottle enough to really feel anything at all. Their last moments together are tragic and quiet.

To say that I 'enjoyed' this film is not the right word. I am haunted by it. I see redemption, somewhat, but only in Sera's character and not really enough to save her. The two lead actors are outstanding. Nicholas Cage is utterly convincing and revolting as a drunk. Elisabeth Shue brings out a curious combination of dignity and helplessness in her protrayal of Sera, the more sympathetic of the two characters. A haunting film, to be sure, but not an enjoyable one.

2 out of 5 stars Arriving in Trite Town.......2007-04-16

Mannered acting and an agglomeration of late 20th century cinematic cliches -- the tart with a heart; the pimp with half a heart; the interminable cutesy-gawky therapy sessions -- grab an Oscar jury by the throat...and choke it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Movies in The World!.......2007-03-07

That's saying a lot by me, since that would be the second movie I've ever said that about. This brilliant picture, which when you first watch it, you'll think you'll never watch it again. It will ebb at you, demand of you to watch it again, reexamine it, watch the words spoken, look at the facial expressions. WHy this film did not win Best Picture, is only evidence of a stupid decision by the Academy Awards. This film was brilliant, this film was wonderful, this film was great. Buy it and buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Las Vegas Unbelievable!!!.......2007-02-07

I have watched this movie probably a dozen times. I found it to be one of the better movies out. Nicolas Cage was truly unbelievable!!! One of the best preformances by him. He is truly one of my favorite actors. Will still watch it over and over again. Love it!!!

1 out of 5 stars Leaving Las Vegas (Movie).......2007-01-22

The ordering, speed of delivery were great, but there was one huge problem which ruined all the good points. The wrong movie was delivered. I ordered Honeymoon in Vegas and received Leaving Las Vegas. And it was too late to return the movie and receive the replacement in time for Christmas. So that was bad.

A jewel of a sleeper, The Man in the Moon comes off as a nearly perfect short story of two sisters' first competition in the field of love. In a 1950's small Louisiana farm town, 14-year-old Dani falls for Court, a 17-year-old engaging neighbor boy. The two become great friends, but Court is more interested in Dani's 17-year-old sister, Maureen, who is blossoming. Dani will look for any justification why she should be with Court, but as human law dictates, there is no cure for a 14-year-old with a crush.

The film is another winning portrayal of small-town adolescence from Robert Mulligan (To Kill A Mockingbird). His eye for casting is impeccable, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper as the earnest parents and newcomer Jason London as the dreamy Court. The real find, though, is Reese Witherspoon as Dani. Her timeless work here is magical. The PG-13 rating is a bit heavy-handed--although the film does not shy away from its look at budding sensuality, or a horrific and emotional accident. Mature 10-year-olds may find one of their favorite films here. --Doug Thomas

Description

Oscar(r) nominees* Sam Waterston and Tess Harper and veteran actress Gail Strickland (Norma Rae) join three talented newcomers in this deeply moving film (Los Angeles Times) about coming of age and sexual discovery in rural, 1950s Louisiana. Brilliantly directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Summer of 42), The Man in the Moon is a poignant and bittersweet tale Roger Ebert calls a wonderful movie...a victory...a meticulously prepared masterpiece. Fourteen-year-old Dani (Reese Witherspoon) and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield) have always shared everything. But when Court Foster (Jason London) moves in next door, the sisters become rivals as Dani experiences her first feelings of affection and Maureen finds the true love she's longed for. But with love comes heartache, and the sisters soon learn a tough life lesson when tragedy strikes and the strength of their bond is the only thing that will keep theirhearts from breaking. *1984: Actor, The Killing Fields; 1986: Supporting Actress, Crimes of the Heart

If you've ever felt alienated by the world around you, Ghost World will offer laughter, tears, and reassurance that you are definitely not alone. Adapted by Daniel Clowes and Crumb director Terry Zwigoff from Clowes's acclaimed graphic novel, the movie spends summer vacation with high school graduates Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlet Johansson). They inflict little tortures on the denizens of urban sprawl, wielding scathing irony as a defense against a "ghost world" full of pop-cultural lemmings and uncertain futures. But when Enid picks a 40-ish vintage-record collector (Steve Buscemi) as the target of her latest cruel prank, she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to him ("he's the opposite of everything I completely hate") and is forced to confront her own crushing loneliness. This combination of deadpan sarcasm and deeply compassionate humanity makes Ghost World a rare and delicate comedy, with an ambiguous ending that suggests tragedy or hope, depending on your own point of view. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Thora Birch (American Beauty) and Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation) "sneak into your heart and stay there" (Rolling Stone) in this "eerie, masterful movie" (Movieline) from the acclaimed director of Crumb. Co-starring Brad Renfro (Deuces Wild), Illeana Douglas (Stir of Echos) and Steve Buscemi (Fargo) in "the best role of his career" (Movieline), Ghost World is a "smartly strange comedy [that] stands out like the Taj Mahal" (Time)! While their classmates head for college, Enid (Birch) and Rebecca (Johansson) focus their energies on tormenting those around them - from a goofy convenience store clerk (Renfro) to an eccentric art teacher (Douglas). But when they zero in on an oddball loner (Buscemi) looking for Miss Right, their seemingly innocent meddling threatens to shatter one of their hearts not to mention their lifelong friendship.

4 out of 5 stars Good Teen Tale.......2007-06-23

This film is a teen tale with some substance as well as humor. When Enid graduates from high school she's slow to grasp the realities necessary to cope in the adult world. Reluctant to get a job, her best friend starts to distance herself from Enid since she rebels against maturity. Enid reaches the height of her selfishness when she plays with the emotions of an older man who is a social misfit trying to find love and acceptance in the world. Young Enid learns a bold lesson in cruelty when her actions snowball, causing hurt to herself and others. There are funny and memorable characters.

5 out of 5 stars a great touching funny movie.......2007-05-18

i was hiking at griffith park in los angeles and when i got home this was playing on showtime. i loved it. first of all thora and scarlett are really hot. being as i collect stuff too i related with steve buscemi character who is a very talented funny actor. i think enid is hotter than scarlett but they are both at their peak here. the whole tone of the movie was very funny to me. the ending was cool, some say she killed herself but i just think she went to a strange place to start a new life like she wanted to. a personal fav.

5 out of 5 stars No ghosts, but funny in a sweet and melancholy way.......2007-05-11

The phone rings. Enid says, "Aren't you going to answer that?"

Seymour says, "I have no desire to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me."

He picks it up anyway and listens and then says, "That's my mother."

I just about cracked up.

Well, the whole movie cracked me up. It's a work of art from indie auteur Terry Zwigoff whom I recall as the director of the edgy documentary Crumb (1994). For some reason, as I was watching this, I thought it was directed by Todd Solondz who directed the amazingly real and funny Welcome to the Doll House (1995). I imagined this as a kind of high school/out of high school progression from the junior high school of Welcome to the Doll House. It could be, actually, with Thora Birch playing an older Dawn Weiner and having all those bad things happen to her, but still managing to survive it all. Both Enid Coleslaw and Dawn Weiner are amazingly true to life and also amazingly talented and unappreciated outsiders in this arbitrary and capricious world. Birch (whom I remember vividly from American Beauty 1999) in her glasses and all those campish outfits over her rather ample figure was just outstanding.

Scarlett Johansson who plays her friend Rebecca was as vivid as my high school date on prom night and actually prettier (I have to admit). She was also outstanding. Both Johansson and Birch are charismatic in a way that will glue your eyes to the screen. They play ultra cynical slackers who love to satirize the world and their fell
