One electrifying hour of Sesame Street music and magic commemorates its 35th anniversary in this collection of 17 classic songs paired with a star-studded guest list. Superhero Grover provides the thematic storyline for musical merriment as he embarks on a mission to discover the "one special song the world can sing together." It's a difficult task since everyone in the Sesame Street cast has an opinion. Beginning with the opening number, "Sing" (which gives cameos to Ben Stiller, Conan O'Brien, the Dixie Chicks, and more), the tunes come in rapid succession along with the usual bantering and balderdash of Kermit, Oscar, and the gang. There is no shortage of hilarity, whether watching Wayne Brady sing "Between" sandwiched in the middle of Big Bird and Snuffy; or Queen Latifah belt a rap rendition of "That's the Letter O." It is no wonder that Sesame Street remains timeless with such servings of exquisite entertainment targeted at youngsters yet enjoyed by all. (Ages 3 to 8) --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Sesame Street - What's the Name of That Song.......2007-03-25

My two year old loves this movie. We have a couple Sesame Street DVD and this is the best. And since I have to watch it also, it helps that I love it too!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tape for kids!.......2007-01-10

I had a chance to see this DVD last year before I even became pregnant. My little cousin (2 yrs old) was viewing it and I fell in love with it-- especially after hearing Patti LaBelle's version of the ABC's! My son is now 8 weeks old and we were watching Sesame Street the other day when the episode aired with Patti singing. I immediately remembered the tape and after MUCH research, I've located and ordered the DVD for my infant. I am really looking forward to him hearing and seeing it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy Sesame Street Video.......2007-01-05

We have numerous Sesame Street videos and this by far is the best one we've purchased. A great introduction to all of the characters, as well as the inclusion of old and new Sesame Street songs and skits. My two year old loves it, especially the Patti LaBelle alphabet song and Bert's Pigeon song. A great addition to kids' video collections.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps my sons attention and loves all the songs and music........2006-12-19

My son truly loves this video and he has learned so much from it. It follows a story line throughout the DVD and has tons of songs and entertainment for my 17 month old. I also purchased the 25th anniversary DVD and he loved that one too. Now my son is obsessed with sesame street and I am actually very happy with how much he has learned from these DVD's. I suggest getting this video for you little one. I know it keeps my son entertained and occupied throughout the whole video.

5 out of 5 stars I just can't get it out of my head!.......2006-08-14

"La de da de dum, la de da de dum...what's the name of that song"? Well, for sure, it is stuck in my head. My 2 year old just loves this dvd, and starts singing the title song whenever he wants to watch it, which, by the way, is daily. Or even several times a day even. Anyway, it is a delightful combination of new Sesame Street footage and older song tidbits like Bert singing and dancing "Doing the Pigeon". It starts out with Super Grover, Big Bird, and Elmo trying to find that "one favorite song" that the whole world can sing along, and they check with everyone along their path to find out what their favorite song is. If your child (or you) love music, you will not be dissappointed in this dvd. I know that I'm not.

5 out of 5 stars not to be missed.......2006-10-23

4 and 1/2 stars.

This is a moving story of a number of people, especially a young woman who finds that her gift is singing. Each of these main characters experience real heartache and Thea seems to feel for every one of them. The acting is superb for all these characters. The music is well chosen and plentiful. The background music fits in well with the classical selections. The music is light classical and not that different from orchestral movie music.

My one complaint is with the sleezy character. He was played well. Tony Goldwyn is a natural for such characters. And I can believe that a naive country girl would fall for such a slick big town operator. And it is in character and does her credit that when she finds out what he is, she immediately breaks it off. The thorn in my side is that at the end, she says to him that there will never be another, even leaving open the possibility that she might get back together with him if he were ever free to marry. This I found hard to believe and even more hard to take.

I was disappointed that she didn't eventually link up with the Doctor, who was by far the best partner for her. But this would have been less realistic than the movie as a whole.

I have to take issue with one reviewer about the mimed singing. Even filmed operas do not have the singers singing. They dub it in afterward. The few live performances filmed show the distortions that their faces have to go through to produce all that volume, and it interferes with the drama.

Those who like this movie will like "Interrupted Melody (1955)". This is a true story of an Australian country girl who becomes a world famous opera singer, marries a doctor, and...well, see the movie. You'll be glad you did.

Bottom line: If you like a good drama about real people, see this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Not Up to Par.......2006-08-28

Compared to other Willa Cather adaptations to film "The Song of the Lark" was a real disappointment. The film was apparently done on a shoe string budget. There were no actual views of Chicago, nor were there any views of the cliffs in Arizona.
The dubbing of Thea's voice was sloppy, and the movie just fizzled at the end. We never get a chance to see Thea perform in big time opera.
The acting was only average; the actor playing Dr. Archie (Cowboy in "Full Metal Jacket") was embarrassing.
Other Cather adaptations, such as "O Pioneers" and "My Antonia" have been done so well, but this film is a waste of money. Avoid it and buy the others.
Oh yeah, read the novel. It is captivating.

4 out of 5 stars More like real life than like the book!.......2006-03-18

I actually enjoyed this more than the book, which I find rather an aimless wander with somewhat one-dimensional characterization at times. I agree with the previous reviewer that Arliss Howard's portrayal of Dr. Archie is the film's best feature. Alison Elliott's Thea is great except for when she's supposed to be singing. Singing is a full upper-body exercise, and I am surprised the director did not instruct her to open her mouth and use her diaphragm. Since singing is a focal point of the film, this unrealistic portrayal IS a problem. Maximilian Schell was also wonderful as Herr Wunsch. I think what I think I enjoyed so much about this film is that -- in contrast to how Cather sometimes portrays these folks in the novel -- it seems to be peopled with figures from my own real life over the years. I could relate to it more than I could to the novel, which is rare.

4 out of 5 stars Radiant: Song of the Lark.......2005-09-06

I reluctantly watched this last evening and am glad to report I was more
than than just pleasantly surprised. It had that good old-fashioned
Masterpiece Theatre feel to it which I remember from when I watched more PBS
in my youth. In fact watching this, in a very big way, returned me to my
youth, reminding me of my own innocent passions. I can picture other kids
living in "nowhereville" watching this and sense their growing youthful
aspirations of achieving greatness and leaving those stifling towns for
Great Things.

As a highschool fan of Willa Cather - after being forced to read "My
Antonia" - it was nice to see such a fine treatment of this moving novel.

Allison Elliot's Thea is a strong young woman, as she would have to be in
the world which the film shows - mostly dominated by men. In fact the film
has its own late romantic operatic touch in that Thea, a Swedish minister's
daughter, is the only central female character, and she fits into this
"men's world" quite easily.

It is no small irony that the men in Moonstone with whom she identifies live
somewhat unhappy lives and dream of something more: her suitor, Ray who sees
that Thea is bound for great things which he cannot begin to understand and
who's death provides the opportunity for her to leave and begin her studies
in earnest; her piano teacher, Professor Wunsch, the once "almost famous"
musician who drowns his tortured failings in the bottle; and most of all Dr.
Archie, who, hopelessly trapped in a loveless marriage with a "sour" wife
see's Thea as the possible vicarious escape in which dreams can be achieved.

There is also Mexican Johnny who teaches her the folk songs from his
homeland, which neighbors and even her own family find some disgrace in.
Though the film does not delve into race relations - in more than one scene
we are shown that those involved in the arts have the opportunity (if not
always the inclination) to rise above racism and sexism.

Though Thea faces some hardships they are given that nice Masterpiece Theatr
e glow which doesn't necessarily diminish their importance, but rather
provides an opportunity to show growth and strength of character.

Director Karen Arthur had a few good tricks up her sleeve - our first image
of Thea is in work clothes on a hill, dusty, unkempt - an image she will see
herself in at the start of her new life when she visits the Art Institute of
Chicago and out of all the treasures there is drawn to Jules Breton's
painting "The Song of the Lark." I don't know if it's my bad eyes or if a
certain technique was being used, but at key moments - the turn of a head, a
look out the window, a glance towards the audience - the film speed seemed
to alter, slowing down almost to the quality of a nickelodeon picture, which
given the time period of the story was another perfect touch.

Lori Stinson provides the voice of the character and we hear the raw beauty
of it in some old Swedish hymns, some Mexican folk songs as it blossoms into
youthful maturity in Che faro senza Euridice, Let the Bright Seraphim, a
Queen of the Night aria, among other things. Marilyn Horne is credited as
the vocal coach.

While I found all of the actors uniformly top quality, the performance that
moved me the most was Arliss Howard as Dr. Archie. As played by Howard,
here is a man who could easily be tortured by his life's circumstances, but
remains a gentleman, through strength of purpose is able to maintain both
his dignity perspective. Howard's range of confined respectable emotions
vasilate between what must remain a secret tortured love for Thea, a
parental tenderness, and the true love and respect of a friend. At her
debut in Chicago, it is Dr. Archie that leads the ovation - the years of joy
and pain now register in his face through pride. It is not just Thea's
debut, it is, in a way, his triumph. The film's penultimate scene is his as
bidding Thea farewell, most likely forever, he fights back his tears and
with voice choked tells her "You were three, the first time I saw that
little blonde head of yours ... I couldn't imagine all the wonder, all the
wonders it contained. There is so little that is truly fine in this world
... Life would have been a pretty bleak stretch for me, if you were left
out."

Bravo to Masterpiece Theatre on this fine innaugaral effort of its American
Collection.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice..........2002-02-21

I loved this presentation on Masterpiece. I'd never read the book, or really given Willa Cather's works a lot of thought until I saw this movie. The story is beautiful, a young woman who has an amazing talent, as many of us do, yet still seeks to find herself, as also many of us do. Alison Elliot does a magnificent job, I'd love to see her in more Masterpiece Works. (She also starred in The Buccaneers)

2 out of 5 stars A Depiction of Perfection !!!.......2006-07-15

After veiwing this movie I was ecstatic and raced to the phone to share the wonderful feeling I was left with during the credits. My Mother, who became a caretaker for my Father for 10 long years as he gradually succumed to the devastation of Alzheimers,is now anxious to veiw the movie as well. The time span of possibly 3 years(???)portrayed the stages so impeccably, it seemed to parallel the many years of my fathers illness. The touches of humor (so desperately clung to in the beginning stages of this disease) become downward spiral eventually replaces the person who was thought to be irreplaceable, and dares us to survive the challenge of coping ,caring, and loving a stranger who, occasionally, says a phrase or hums a tune, one we thought was so long in the past, we'd never get to hear it again. These are the best of moments, for their length is just that,a pleasurable reprieve, swept from our thoughts as suddendly as it arose and replaced with seemingly constant repetative rapore, as the days of the week are explained again, and then again to Martin by his ever-patient Love, Barbara. I was saddened to find the original book written by Ulla Isaksson, was in Swedish and was not translated into english.
So much of the book, I'm sure, was impossible to cover in this two hour drama and unfortunately I'm unable to read the book on which "A Song For Martin" was based. If this is inncorrect please respond w/info on locating an english copy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully done movie of a fatal disease.......2006-05-05

Having been in the medical profession and dealt with Alzheimer's disease more times than I care to remember the movie was true to life and dealt with the disease and its impact on the the lives of two people in love. I have witnessed the impact on the families as well as the impact that this devistating disease has on the husband/wife or wife/husband. No Hollywood drama, but a true to life experience. The end is especially poignant; acceptance resignation and finality. This is a movie that should be of use in every physician's to help people understand Alzheimers and its impact.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible love story, realistic.......2004-12-12

*****
Unlike other reviewers, I did not see this film as depressing. That said, it is not easy to watch. It is realistic, about a powerful accomplished man who gradually disappears into his own world with Alzheimer's disease, and how this affects the love of his life who becomes his caretaker. It is poignant, and unusual, as it is rare to see love stories between older people that are portrayed realistically with the couple as having the same desires, passions, and needs as the young.

The story is not told along a physical time line (so you don't know how many months or years intervene in the story) but along an emotional time line, so that you watch as one loss after another occurs, a gradual dying instead of a sudden one. At the same time the love between the two falters, but recovers, and never dies. This is why I don't find the movie depressing. It is about the power of love.

If you have ever had losses in a relationship you will enjoy this film. Or, of course, if you live with someone with Alzheimer's. Or if you are in a relationship with someone who is mentally ill. Or if you just want to see a story of "true love", but a realistic "true love". It shows the loneliness, the isolation, and too, the triumph of love. It reminds us of what is truly important.

A previous reviewer said that this was a Norwegian movie; I had thought it was Swedish. At any rate, it is Scandinavian, with English subtitles. Instead of finding this annoying, the language seemed charming to me. The director's comments in the version I watched were in English and very interesting. I watched the whole film once, and then a second time with the director's comments, something I've only done twice before in my life. This is a film I will treasure forever and I am so glad I own.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, sad, and compelling.......2003-09-10

A super-depressing, but well acted, and very engrossing Swedish drama about an late-middleaged couple struggling with the husband's sudden onset of Alzheimer's-based dementia. They are both high-level musicians, and the love of art intertwines their love for life, and each other. This film is very good and certainly worth watching (it's more of a European art film than an American-style disease-of-the-month flick), but it is definitely a big old downer, so be prepared.

You might think that this 1997 comedy based on the popular late-'50s TV series would be little more than a pointless clone of its small-screen predecessor, but as a harmless slice of family entertainment it's surprisingly easy to take. Of course nobody could ever hope to match the original Cleaver family for Eisenhower-era charm, but there's cleverness afoot in the notion of presenting the Clinton-era Cleavers with just a hint of dysfunction beneath all that domestic bliss and innocence. While Ward (Christopher McDonald) pushes his son Beaver (Cameron Finley) onto the football team to compensate for the lost glories of his bygone youth, Beaver's grades suffer along with his self-esteem. When a teacher suggests that the Cleavers seek family counseling, June (Janine Turner) has visions of Beaver in the loony bin. Meanwhile, brother Wally is wracked with guilt over dating his friend Eddie Haskell's object of affection, but eventually these various plot lines (borrowed from the TV show) converge for the requisite happy ending. What--you were expecting Beaver to become a Prozac kid? --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Groovy Movie.......2005-06-07

Okay, YUP-it's corny. HELLO-its based on a very popular show from the 50s and 60s, which I happen to love. Forgive the cheese factor every once in awhile and enjoy this family film!

5 out of 5 stars Leave it to the Beave!!!.......2004-12-06

"Leave It to Beaver" was one of the most popular TV shows of the late 50s-early 60s.

Beaver was the youngest member of a 50s family called the Cleavers that included Dad (Ward), Mom (June) and big brother (Wally). When the show began in 1957 Beaver was 8 and his brother Wally 12.

Tony Dow as Wally Cleaver was perhaps the most likeable and most believeable of the Cleavers. He was teen-cute and acted like an honest-to-goodness, normal 50s teenager. Jerry Mathers as the Beave was cute too but a bit of a drag as he aged on the series. He grew up quickly and at one point he was almost as tall as his TV Mom and Dad! The producers should have quit while they were ahead.

Hugh Beaumont and Barabara Billingsley as the Cleaver Dad (Ward) and Mom (June) are another story. Dad grew up on a farm and apparently he and "June" were something like high school sweethearts. I don't remember discovering exactly what Dad did for a living. He had an office "downtown" and a "den" at home where he occasionally worked. But I don't remember ever being told exactly what he did. I'm guessing he sold insurance. He spent an extraordinary amount of time however counseling, guiding, and mentoring his boys over every little thing. He was the perfect 50s dad.

Mrs. Cleaver was a wonderful fantasy character. She reminded us in a number of episodes that she grew up with her Aunt Martha and she went to boarding school. Like other TV moms of the 50s she dressed in pearls, earbobs, and crisp, attractive frocks while housecleaning. Her hair and her makeup were perfect as she went about dusting the tops of china closets and making waffles. Ma Cleaver appeared to have few interests outside the home (like charities, church activites, animal shelters, bake sales, etc.) She was always at home tending her men by pouring glasses of milk, buttering toast, and tidying the kitchen. She was never shown doing truly laborious housework - like sorting dirty laundry or mopping floors. Her household tasks were light and ladylike (slivering carrots, polishing the silver, etc.) After the dining room table was cleared in the evening and the dishes were done, she sat beside her husband on the living room couch. He read the newspaper and she sewed buttons onto what appeared to be male clothing while both chatted about the boys.

Interestingly, none of the Cleavers watched TV.

The Cleavers lived in several different houses over the lifetime of the series and in each house the boys always had their own bathroom. The boys' bathroom wasn't out in the hallway but just off their bedroom - like a master bedroom and bath. This bathroom arrangement was really peculiar. It meant that there were at least 5 bathrooms in the Cleaver house: Mom and Dad probably had their own bathroom as part of the master suite and Beaver and Wally had their own bathroom as part of their bedroom suite. That's two bathrooms. There was probably another upstairs "guest" bedroom and this bedroom must have had its own bathroom as well. That makes three bathrooms. (This guest bedroom was where June's Aunt Martha would have stayed when she visited.) And then there must have been a bathroom in the upstairs hallway and possibly a downstairs "powder room" for guests and the convenience of the family when they didn't want to run upstairs. That makes 5 bathrooms. I'm guessing the downstairs powder room was tucked somewhere at the back of the main hallway or tucked into a corner of the kitchen.

The Cleaver boys spent a great deal of time in their bedroom. Whenever they rushed into the house after school, they usually asked to be immediately "excused" from Mom and/or Dad's presence and hurried to their bedroom. Wally sat at a desk doing homework while Beave lay in bed daydreaming, kid-worrying, or playing with a toy plane, a cowboy pistol, a comic book, etc. The amount of time the Cleaver boys spent in their bedroom was very peculiar. Beaver was very, very occasionally seen on the telephone in the living room however.

The Cleaver boys had several friends: Beaver had Larry Mondello, (a fat little boy), Gilbert, Whitey, Gus (an old fireman down the street), and many more but the most memorable were two snippy, snooty girls in his class. Wally had Lumpy and Eddie Haskell. Eddie is one of TVs most beloved and best remembered characters. His Slick Slimy approach to Mom and Dad Cleaver was the most orignal touch on the series.

Other notable minor characters were Mrs. Cleaver's maiden aunt Martha, Lumpy's Dad Mr. Rutherford, and Mary Ellen Rogers, a teen classmate of Wally's.

Almost everyone (including his mom) called little Theodore Cleaver "Beaver" or "The Beave." (Exceptions were Aunt Martha and Miss Landers, the Beave's teacher.) According to one of the earliest episodes, Theodore received his nickname from his older brother Wally who, as a 4 year old, could only pronouce "Theodore" as "Tweeter." It was Ma and Pa Cleaver who refined "Tweeter" to "Beaver." The producers intended the name to suggest a perky, toothy, happy little kid.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2004-10-25

This is a good movie to see, especially after seeing the original Leave it to Beaver series that were made in the 1950s. But there were some things wrong like some of the girls were wearing miniskirts and nobody wore miniskirts until 1965 or in the late '60s. And also in the movie, I saw Wally (Erik von Detten) was kissing his girlfriend Karen (Erika Christensen). And Wally wasn't kissing any of his girlfriends in the original Leave it to Beaver series except in this one episode that was made in February 28, 1963, "Box Office Attraction", Wally's girlfriend Marlene Holmes was kissing Wally. But anyway, this movie is 10x better than "The Sandlot." You can see my review on that movie too. So it is a great movie but I still like the original series of Leave it to Beaver that was made in the '50s.

4 out of 5 stars Leave it to Beaver.......2004-08-04

Why does everyone expect this to be a TV-show clone? For gosh sakes, it would be critcized for being too akin to the TV show because it wouldn't be original. I think those people need to open their horizons.

Leave it to Beaver is an incredibly well done film. It is true to the series only in bits and pieces, but it really shines anyway.

The acting is superb. It's all excellent. No actor/actress in the film did even one thing wrong with their roles. It was truly an improvement over most Disney films.

The storyline and plot is, like most Disney films, toned down and simplified for younger kids. Their is truly only two full plots: Wally and Karen's jumbles, and Beaver's main story. See, that keeps it enjoyable for all.

The script and words themselves were written in clear, direct language. As such, Beaver has a bit of a lyspy voice, but it can be forgiven. He was young. Again, the movie's actual talk was toned down mostly for younger ones.

The movie really doesn't have SFX to talk about. Like most Disney films, it focuses on charm. It certainly chose well.

All in all, they did a great job!

5 out of 5 stars Leave it to Beaver.......2004-07-10

Leave it to Beaver. I think everyone has seen that television show at least once, and I know that I, for one, loved it... even though it was completely unrealistic. But who cares? It was a cute little show.

The movie is the exact same way; don't expect something COMPLETELY lifelike... but DO expect something a bit different from the original show. The Cleavers have been updated... and I think my favorite part was when Mrs. Cleaver told Eddie Haskill off... that was great.

The characters have a great performance, too... Adam Zolotin was a great Eddie Haskill, and Christopher McDonald was the perfect Ward.

And watch out for cameo appearances from a couple of the original stars of the series. Those were great to see.

All in all, if you want to see a movie that makes you think, don't get it. It isn't that kind of a thing... but for a family movie, I don't think that there's a better one.

5 out of 5 stars The film debut of "America's Most Beloved Cowboy".......2005-10-02

Along about 1936, this fresh-faced cowboy arrived in Hollywood with a guitar, a troubadour's voice, and a manner that epitomized "the good guy." His name was Tex Ritter, and he had already recorded some good old western songs, making him a natural choice for Hollywood's newest singing cowboy. Song of the Gringo was his first film.

Ritter plays a lawman named Tex who is sent out to get to the bottom of a mystery. It seems that miners in a certain locale keep turning up dead, leaving their mines in the hands of a couple of local businessmen. Tex arrives in the guise of a bank robber hiding out from the sheriff and his posse in the home of Don Esteban Valle. There he meets up with Lolita, Esteban's lovely daughter. She takes a shine to him, which doesn't set too well with Esteban's crooked partner, who has already brought Tex into his little gang of hombres. Tex proves himself trustworthy, but things go awry at Lolita's birthday celebration, leaving Tex on trial for killing two men and attempting to kill another. As they say, though, murder will out in the end.

Tex does a lot of singing and strumming in this movie, including a very entertaining version of "Rye Whiskey." It's easy to see how he caught on with audiences and went on to become one of America's favorite singing cowboys. Song of the Gringo is a B-western, of course, but it features a surprisingly good cast (including Joan Woodbury as Lolita and Fuzzy Knight as the constantly comical Slim Zony) and holds itself together pretty well plot-wise. Not only is this a must-see for the simple fact it marks Tex Ritter's film debut, it's a pretty doggoned good Western in its own right.

Adam Zolotin was a great Eddie Haskill, and Christopher McDonald was the per
