Uncommon Valor Is Reality........2007-05-09

Uncommon Valor is a outstanding motion picture that should be viewed by politicians and war mongrels around the globe. Gene Hackman in Uncommon Valor gave his true feelings and thoughts of a government who leave their men behind in wars (POW's). This movie should and shall be rated above all war films, due in part because the men deplicted on the film fought for freedom of men that their government had forgot. And the men on the film had to lay their lives on the line for real this time with a righteous cause of good. *****

Uncommon Valor's Storyline.......2007-01-21

I love this movie. I only have a few comments on some scenes within. First, why is the CIA doing surveillance at the American airport on a retired Colonel and his mercenary crew going on a POW/MIA mission? The CIA is not chartered for domestic surveillance. Second, the boat scene, after the crew has loaded its gear on it, fails to show Mr. Chang's two daughters. It showed all the other members but not the girls - where were they? Third, in the scene where Patrick Swayze fires from the
hill-top down onto the Lao guards, Mr. Chang was shot in the head. By whom? Unless a sharpshooter was hiding nearby, it would be nearly impossible for an infantryman to shoot upward to his target and hit him in the forehead, especially with the "fog of war" occuring through most of that scene.

Comments aside, the movie is inspiring and brings tears to my eyes due to the fact that a handful of guys had the balls to go back to SouthEast Asia and retrieve our POWs/MIAs whereas the Government failed to do so. The acting may be melodramatic, but the storyline is right on.

This Movie is no doubt, one of the greatest action films or should it be more classified along the lines of drama. Our gopvernment does not want to admit it, but we all know they left alot of our fellows over there. The story comes from a hit home perspective. A father, veteran servant and loyalist to his country, desperatley seeking his son, MIA in vietnam. Heart gripping scene when he awakens from a dream of his son as a child, in all his innocence, standing at his bed at night, looking for the security of his father druning a thunder storm. Now, knowing his son cries out for his loving security from the real torment he lives in in his bondage. Don't miss out on this passionate story, that will truly touch your heart. First rate!!

this action classic has gene hackman as a former marine who is still looking for his son who was taken prisoner in 'nam in the 70's. with a great supporting cast(robert stack,fred ward patrick swayze, reb brown,and more)he set out to bring his son home.
great action in the final 40 mins. and really just a slam bang action movie!!!

Very Well Done and interesting.......2006-06-26

I thought this was a very well done documentary..I would of given it 5 stars, perhaps, but I've just finished Ken Burns again and that is the gold standard in my opinion. This set was well done and very educational and informative, the images are outstanding as is the content. A welcome addition to any Civil War collection.

Gettysburg & Stories of Valor - Civil War Minutes.......2005-09-03

Interesting and informative. Almost a little too thorough as it lost me a few times. Very long; both my husband and I fell asleep while watching it. Aided in our visit to Gettysburg, but not exactly entertaining.

An amazing experience for Civil War buffs!.......2005-04-07

This is the first of the "Civil War Minutes" documentaries that I've watched and I'm very impressed. Despite all I've read about the Battle of Gettysburg there was plenty I learned from this outstanding film! Little known stories of extraordinary courage from privates to officers, and even civilians (John Burns, the Gettysburg resident and War of 1812 veteran who fought alongside Union soldiers and was shot three times, surviving miraculously!) are retold in detail. Actual artifacts are shown, from a blood-stained drum to a bullet-scarred Union jacket, that help bring these forgotten tales of courage and sacrifice back to life. Disc 1 focuses on Gettysburg while disc 2 is a "mixed bag" of Civil War information, from the infamous Andersonville Prison to the medical/surgical history of the war. Bonus features include an informative commentary with Michael Kraus, David M. Neville, and director Mark Bussler, an interview about Gettysburg, and bonus trailers for other "Civil War Minutes" films. Perfect for both the novice and the historian, this highly informative and entertaining documentary is sure to please all history buffs!

Best Civil War Minutes To Date!.......2004-10-05

This DVD box set shows what can be done when you take the time to get the history right! I found the first DVD to be chock full of interesting episodes based around the Battle of Gettysburg. The 2nd DVD rounds out the set with stories of valor from throughout the Civil War - some of the episodes feature things this Civil War buff did not know! Be sure to check out the commentary tracks for added insight!

Best one yet in the series by far.......2004-09-09

Many thanks are owed to Bussler, Neville, Kraus, and everyone else who clearly worked very hard to bring this documentary to life. The most professional of the series so far, they are palpably coming into their own as filmmakers while retaining the love and care of amateurs (meant in the best, noble sense). Also very nice for the more educated Gettysburg scholar is the focus on some of the not-as-prominent people and places of interest, i.e. Col. Strong Vincent and Culp's Hill.

The only drawback is one that one hates to mention, but nonetheless it is what kept this from being a 5-star review. Acknowledging that Carradine is a history buff and an accomplished actor, his narration at times drives one to distraction. Emphasizing the last word or syllable, in the same way, of every sentence in the film makes it seem like work after a while. It's not so much that it's monotone, but more like tri-tone. But maybe it was just my mood or something else. It might be the kind of thing that would go unnoticed by most people, and I hope it is.

On the other hand, the alternate commentary is great. With the exception of the bawdy and juvenile ha-ha regarding John Burn's statue, and uncomfortable silence that follows it, the track is packed with still more information than the actual documentary. It lends credence to the filmmakers' assertion that hundreds of documentaries could be made about stories from this auspicious battle. Don't pass this feature up.

People should be happy that this movie was made instead of only comparing it to the 80's series. I personally love this movie and so does my five year old son. Even my wife likes it. There will never be another Joe series, movie, etc. that is better than the old toons. The ninja scenes are a highlight and the music is even semi-cool. Check it out or try it again.

didn't make sense..........2006-08-01

i don't know i watched this but why didn't it make sense??? i mean they were all over the place duke and commander fighting in a building then it switched to storm shadow and snake eyes fighting in a jungle what?!?! well other than a few problems it was ok.

I bought this for my son who is five, he loves the movie and watches it daily while playing with his G.I. Joe figures. If your expecting to see something that resembles the original cartoon series then you will be disapointed, but overall it really isn't that bad. It has a positive message for kids, eventhough it does show some mild violence later on in the movie. For an adult it's really boring but it keeps my child interested and that's pretty difficult to do with a young child!

the onyl reason i got this was because i lvoe gi joe and wanted to see how the new re makes were as far as writers voices and looks as cgi characters but unfortunatly the story sucked and was boring , the bad guys were horrible as far as depth to character the movie was a ploy toget chumps like me to buy that reminice on the good old gi joe, the toys look awesome so i figured it would be nice, but instead i wanted to fall asleep, or shoot myself, shame on whoever was in charge of letting this new re cration turn out so horriblee and borderline homo

I missed the original series.......2005-09-20

This is an all new G.I. Joe adventure for an all new generation, so I shouldn't except the same things. With that said, I still somewhat enjoyed this, but the use of CG instead of hand drawn animation is what really made me mad. It's not the worst CG I've seen, it was actually pretty good for a direct to DVD release, but it just seem too different from the old cartoon and comics to have it feel like the same series. Despite these problems, at a mere 77 minutes, I was able to sit and enjoy it as a free rental as the story itself was still classic Joe. If you want to rent G.I. Joe rent the original series, if you want something new get this one.

Movie Does Justice to Women.......2002-10-20

I disagree on many points with the 1 star reviewer of this noble film about women and their valiant contributions as war nurses during WWII.

I believe this movie had strong performances and that it is a significant one in how few movies portray a women's experience and view of war. For this reason, trashing this movie isn't fair. Sure, it isn't a "great" war film and some of the portrayals of Japanese aren't realistic and even laughable. However, I have to say that this movie clearly stated in the beginning it was a fictional account and was created in order to show how valiant many women acted during war. The one star reviewer was unfair in their assessment of this movie as a result. Acting needs to be considered when making such a review and he did not factor that in fairly in their overall rating.

I treasure this movie, especially Kristy McNichol's performance. This movie is between a 3-5 depending on how one chooses to view it. I give it a 5 because of its unique message and content, and because the acting was superb. Anyone who gives it under 3 stars perhaps is more upset at how men are portrayed in this film -- not a typical depiction in a war movie. Men are sometimes humiliated, but really they only humiliate themselves.

Heinous garbage.......2001-10-18

A pretty much unwatchable smorgasbord of prison camp cliches.

It's clear that someone watched Bridge Over the River Kwai a few dozen times, but managed to do so without learning anything from it. It wouldn't be quite so bad if the abuse of the women POW's by their Japanese captors (while undoubtedly reflecting reality, and probably underplaying it) hadn't been staged in such an exploitative way. Someone has shrewdly cloaked the film in lofty bookends (Susan Sarandon doing dramatized "congressional testimony") and given it an honorable-sounding title, but there's no denying that not far underneath the veneer of disingenuous respectfulness lies a "women-in-prison" movie.

The development of the cardboard characters (Sarandon is the "loyal earth mother" to daughter-figure Kristy McNichol's "sullen rebellious one with a heart of gold") intrudes only as frequently as absolutely necessary to get us as quickly as possible from one rape, beating, or humiliation to the next. (The highlight(?), I guess, being when McNichol and Sarandon are forced by the "evil guard" to repeatedly slap one another across the face -- I'm sure that happened all the time in WWII prison camps.)

Since it was made for TV, we have to get by without the nudity, shower scenes, and lesbian love scene normally found in this sort of adventure; I guess we'll have to wait for the director's cut.

The Japanese are played to caricature as either socially inept, ridiculously "honorable," or insanely and stupidly mean; it's an amalgam of stereotypes.

Both McNichol and Sarandon do the best they can with what they've been given and McNichol, particularly, triumphs repeatedly over the bad dialogue and murky photography; she's worth ten times whatever they paid her.

An awful movie, of interest only to fans of McNichol or Sarandon.

Girlfriend made me watch it............2001-03-19

I am am glad she did. Not only should "women everywhere" be inspired by the valor the women potray in this movie, but men should be inspired as well. Based on a true story, this movie will truely entertain, and make you realize that not only men fight wars. (Plus it should get a few "good guy" points from your girlfriend!!)

I saw this movie on television years ago, and was so impressed I have been looking for it ever since. Thank goodness for Amazon.com!! :)

Deep Appreciation For American Valor.......2004-06-29

Exceptionally moving interviews of real people speaking as stewards of the legacy their comrades helped to make. The video starts out slowly, but as the viewer becomes 'acquainted' with the people sharing their experiences, it comes together in a very powerful way. Photography and interviews gives one a very deep appreciation for "American Valor"... heaven bless them!
