Somebody in Hollywood thought there was some fish-out-of-water potential in this teaming of wild man Woody Harrelson and slow-burning Kiefer Sutherland as a pair of New Mexico cowboys who go to New York to tame the wild, wild, uh ... East. Well, they were mistaken, because this 1994 action-comedy is little more than a tiresome reworking of Crocodile Dundee. Woody and Kiefer head for the Big Apple to rescue the illegal-immigrant daughter of one of their rodeo buddies (who has mysteriously disappeared), and what they discover is a sweatshop operation run by a hot-tempered thug (Dylan McDermott, before his role on TV's The Practice). That's when the boys start using their ropin' and shootin' skills to foil the bad guys. One measure of this film's credibility is the inevitable scene of the boys riding on horseback through the gridlocked streets of Manhattan. Uh huh. You know how it goes... you just have to go with it or marvel at the sheer stupidity of it all. Of course, forget all the sniping if you're a fan of Harrelson or Sutherland--they're both doing their best under the burden of disadvantage. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not all that bad, actually..........2007-05-01

Professional reviewers have savaged this movie, but I think their attitude is a bit harsh.

Yes, the plot has been done before. Yes, the humor is a bit forced in spots. Yes, there is a cringe-worthy torture scene involving a calf. Yes, the villain is a one-dimensional cardboard character.

But, the world will never tire of "buddy" movies, or fish-out-of-water plots. Screwball redneck humor isn't going anywhere either. And if we must have a one-dimensional villain, at least he's dreamy Dylan McDermott.

"The Cowboy Way" won't win any Oscars, but it doesn't aspire to; it was meant as light entertainment, and it *is* surprisingly entertaining.

Woody Harrelson is "Pepper", the comic half of the duo, and he has a certain brash charm which actually is amusing to watch. Kiefer Sutherland plays "Sonny", the deadpan half of the pair, and his serious nature is an effective foil to Harrelson's excesses. Their characters are believable, even if the plot strains credibility at times. Sutherland has a memorable moment during a scene that takes place in a morgue after the death of a minor character; the simple grace and dignity of his farewell gesture reveal he has inherited at least some of the great subtlety and power of his father, the magnificent actor Donald Sutherland.

Their adventures in New York, searching for a lost friend and attempting to rescue a kidnapped daughter from slavery, take a few detours along the way. The pair quarrel, seperate, and Pepper meets some interesting New Yorkers while Sonny gets in serious trouble, but they reunite just in time to kick some bad guy butt with the help of some of New York's finest.

The bad guy is dispensed with in a rather creative, if cruel fashion, romance blossoms between Sonny and the female lead and they all drive off into the sunset in their pickup truck.

I'm neither a big fan of things cowboy, nor particularly of any of the actors involved, and from the reviews I was not expecting much of this movie, but it was worth a few chuckles. I can think of worse ways of spending an afternoon than watching this. I gave it four stars partly to make up for the harsh reviews it has gotten from others though I think it really deserves three. If you are sick of overhyped, straining-for-Oscar movies and want a mildly enjoyable, unpretentious bit of entertainment, this little sleeper may be perfect for you.

4 out of 5 stars great comedy.......2006-08-12

its very funny, a great comedy with a decent story line.... if you like cowboy humor this is a great video to check out!

3 out of 5 stars Good son, bad son........2006-08-04

Not the greatest rodeo movie ever made but by no means the worst.
Tends to drag on a little but overall is worth the effort. Some of the casting is strange mainly because there is no chemistry between the characters, but the storyline is above average and Keifer Sutherland does enough to carry the rest over the line.

2 out of 5 stars Crime Solving Cowboys In the Big City...What A Concept!.......2006-06-12

I guess it's still true (to some degree anyway) that being a MOVIE STAR has more, uh, cachet to it than being a TV actor. But sometimes you have to wonder why. Watching this mediocre-at-best 1994 effort featuring former TV star Woody Harrelson, future TV leads Kiefer Sutherland and Dylan McDermott, you just might wonder why that's the case. These actors can all be justifiably proud of their work on (respectively) CHEERS, 24, and THE PRACTICE. I can't imagine that they bring up this film much in conversation as being one of the highlights of their careers.

Which is not to say that they don't all give it their best shot. As our cowboys-loosed-in-the-Big-Apple heroes, Sutherland and Harrelson are affable enough. And it's interesting to see McDermott take on a menacing villain's role. But otherwise, this movie is pretty predictable "fish out of water" fare. And speaking of TV shows, didn't Dennis Weaver pretty much mine all the possibilities of out of that particular plotline decades ago on McCLOUD?

Of course, McCloud never resorted to such grotesqueries as we witness in the "hungry calf" scene. Even in the new millennium, television seldom stoops quite THAT low. The filmmakers must have been getting a little desperate at that point. I believe this is what's known as "jumping the shark." Or some variation on that phrase involving a "calf." One shudders to think.

5 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2005-04-16

The film brings to the screen the story of two cowboys out of New Mexico who come to NY looking for their friend who's gone missing while searching for his daughter.
It is a highly entertaining, action-packed adventure with significant elements of comedy. To a certain extent it brings to mind Next of Kin starring Patrick Swayze.
Woody Harrelson, Kiefer Sutherland, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The plot, the setting, the dialogues, and the music, are all WONDERFUL!
The Cowboy Way is a movie definitely worth watching, and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

Robert Mitchum was already a dab hand at film noir when he stepped into the delicious trap of Angel Face, Otto Preminger's 1952 addition to the genre. Here Mitchum plays an amazingly seducible guy who falls under the spell of spoiled rich girl Jean Simmons; a former race-car driver, he'd like to open his own sports-car garage, and her money would come in awfully handy. But she's got a few quirks to work out first, including her hostility for her stepmother, who doesn't stand a chance against this poker-faced vixen. True to its title, the film has an absolutely deadpan approach to this material, as Preminger's calm style recalls more the clinical courtroom proceedings of Anatomy of a Murder than the perverse lushness of Laura. Mitchum's in absolutely top form, and Jean Simmons has just right amount of intensity behind her porcelain beauty. The supporting cast is led by Herbert Marshall, as Simmons' father, a writer who's been sponging off his wife for years, and Leon Ames does a skillful turn as a crafty lawyer. The ending is as pre-ordained as can be, and the film moves toward its sinister conclusion without turning its head to explore other options. But that's why we love film noir. --Robert Horton

Description

Otto Preminger, who showed how to mix a beautiful woman with murder in the landmark Laura, directs this tale of a passion gone haywire. Frank's a regular guy with a steady girl and a dream of owning his own garage when he crosses paths with Diane. She wants him. Or does she want a fall guy to blame when Diane's stepmother plunges off a high cliff and leaves her fortune to Diane? Alibis, betrayals, courtroom thrills and the fire of a woman too dangerous to trust and too alluring to resist make Angel Face a film-noir classic.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars yes, a great film.......2007-05-16

After reading the comments by those here, I placed the film in my "Wish List" here on Amazon. Last night on Turner Classic Movies they showed this movie. It was really wonderful. I enjoyed the whole cast and I agree that Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons were perfect in these roles. While her deadly deed plays out, she sits there emotionless with cold eyes and porcelain beauty. It was somewhat chilly. Simmons usually played the sweet wife or love roles in movies. I loved seeing her in a completely different role. I definitely recommend this movie. And what a surprise ending! OMG!

5 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Film Noir With A Difference.......2007-04-09

Angel Face was directed in 1952 by: Otto Preminger (Laura, 1944; Anatomy Of A Murder, 1959). Otto Preminger's `Laura' is now rightly regarded as one of great film noir masterpieces, however he made some less appreciated noirs like Fallen Angel (1945); Whirlpool (1949); Where The Sidewalk Ends (1950) and this film Angel Face. Upon it's release critics and public alike had seen perhaps far too many of this type of film hence the negative reviews. However I feel that this film is deserving of some rehabilitation. The theme is a familiar one of the Femme Fatale attempting to get some chump to assist in a murder. Angel Face is slightly different in that the Femme Fatale's (performed by Jean Simmons (Great Expectations, 1946; Hamlet, 1948; The Black Narcissus, 1947)) motivation is not the standard killing for money but for love. This makes it similar to the Ellen Berent character played by Gene Tierney in `Leave Her To Heaven' (1946, John M. Stahl). Generally in noir's guys kill for the girl and girls for the money. Robert Mitchum (Out Of The Past, 1947; Crossfire, 1947; Night Of The Hunter, 1955) gives a wonderful performance of a guy who is not so stupid as to get suck into her trap. He also has some great dialogue that one wish's they could always have at hand to deliver in those situations. Along with Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster, Mitchum has to rank as one of the great noir actors. Cinematography was by Harry Stradling (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951; Johnny Guitar, 1954; A Face In The Crowd, 1957)

This DVD comes with a wonderful audio commentary by Eddie Muller and is well worth a listen. In 1964 Jean-Luc Godard placed this film at no. 8 in his list of the greatest American films of the sound era. That alone should be good enough reason to investigate this film. It also has one of the great endings.

5 out of 5 stars "The richest guy in America presents the coolest guy in America".......2007-04-03

The title of this piece is a paraphrase of an observation offered by the man on the commentary track. This is an RKO picture, a Howard Hughes production--there are details about that statement that make the commentary track well worth hearing. It stars Robert Mitchum. I had never quite formulated that particular thought, but having heard it, I immediately realized it was perfectly true: Robert Mitchum WAS the coolest guy in America.

He was so cool that on screen he could act like a perfect chump from first frame to last and still seem cool. He was so cool that in an America where Lucy and Ricky could not share a bed, he could get busted for possession of marijuana, take all the heat and all the publicity without whimper or complaint, then go right on being as big a movie star as ever, and still the coolest guy in sight.

The previous Amazon reviews have been impressively sound in describing this picture. I have nothing to add beyond endorsing their high ratings. This is an unpretentious little noirish film. It boasts a fine cast from Jean Simmons in an uncharacteristic role, to Herbert Marshall in a characteristic one, to Kenneth Tobey and Mona Freeman in fine supporting performances. Otto Preminger was a wonderfully skilled (if wholly obnoxious) director. This movie works, satisfying in ways that some more famous films do not.

This DVD of "Angel Face" offers a good film, a good print and not much in the way of bells and whistles beyond a useful (for once) commentary. You won't go wrong with it.

Five appropriately cool stars.

5 out of 5 stars A face only a stepmother could hate (recommended).......2007-02-25

Ambulance driver Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum) who aspires to own a high-performance car garage meets beautiful antisocial femme fatale Diane Tremayne (Jean Simons) in the house of questionable suicide-attempt victim Catherine Tremayne (Barbara O'Neil). Diane's relentless pursuit of Frank leads to spellbinding danger for anyone coming between her and her obsessive emotional attachments.

Mitchum is great in every film I've seen. In ANGEL FACE he plays the level-headed voice of reason battling an emotional vortex of compulsive admiration. Baring a strong resemblance to Audrey Hepburn, Jene Simmons has a slight stature and attractive girl-next-door appearance. This made me quite unprepared for the diabolical plotting and tormented conscience she so artfully portrayed. She crys; she lies; she is cold, calculated, and dangerous. With so many facets of her personality, you don't know what to expect when coming face to face with her. I first saw Simmons in ELMER GANTRY (1960) as a Bible thumping revivalist. Based on the title, her 1952 role is perhaps an appropriate prelude to that later role. You will think twice before trusting another beauty after ANGEL FACE -- highly recommended!

Movie quote: "You don't hate me, really. You couldn't hate anybody that loves you as much as I do."

5 out of 5 stars A great film noir classic.......2007-02-13

An excellent film. Very little known until now but, I would say, is one of the best films in its genre. Simmons is a perfect femme fatale here. It is also a film full of misogynist quips: "The only bad thing about America is that women get spoiled"; or "...even a woman can do it". Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun for your feminist friends.

It's a fine movie to watch, easy to follow plot, no complications, it's fast. goes to the point and it's a thriller; in only 90 minutes approx; it goes in a blink of an eye. I wish they made all like this one.

The end is one of a kind, don't miss it.

1 out of 5 stars BURNT OUT .......2007-01-14

This would be an exciting film for children. For adults: Cheesy script, poor acting and campy stuntwork/camerawork/special effects.

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy yet enjoyable..........2006-11-03

I first saw this movie on the Sci-Fi Channel when they were showing 'marathon' of movies featuring dragons. The subject of review says it all 'Cheesy yet enjoyable'. There are parts that are unintentionally funny: Silas' groomed hair, Princess' attire (lingerie and black pants), Girl who yells "Fire!" when operating the catapult (even though she is the one pulling the device). The movie does has its own charm and it is enjoyable (if you can take it for what it's worth -- Sci-Fi Weekend Movie).

I liked the movie so much that I bought from Amazon. Recommended if you like these kind of movies. =)

2 out of 5 stars Ever seen a made at home movie? Nows your chance! .......2006-03-30

... Now how do you start a review of this kind of movie. Was it a movie? When all of a DOZEN towns people at the gate are waving farewell and sending the would be heros into battle against the (wonderfully computer rendered)dragons doesn't that just somehow seem sad. We six Heros will die so that the dragons won't eat the rest of you! Thats right all 11 of...oh Im sorry didn't see you there, ALL TWELVE of you. I especially like how in this town of twelve+heros there happens to be a traveling deadly martial arts guy, a beautiful girl with a huge crossbow on wheels,(talk about envy) and the robin hood guy, except he's actually from outside the town. So I'm going to stop now before I cry... Yes it was that bad. But as always watch it for the Heck of it and try not to be upset about time lost in a vigilant attempt to make sense out of the dragon storm movie thing..experience thing.

5 out of 5 stars Well-Done Fun!.......2006-01-17

This movie is just a bit of fun! The acting, directing and production values are very good. Maxwell Caulfield makes an excellent reluctant hero and John Rhys Davies injects humor into his villanous role. The medieval setting is more convincing and less glamorous than in many movies I've seen. The script is pretty good, as dragon eggs land like comets on the earth, but we aren't sure at first (and neither are the characters) what they are. Even though the movie is not a bloodfest, it is too scary for children. The dragons do kill people, there is a fair amount of suspense, and the dragons are frightening.

1 out of 5 stars It just doesn't get any worse than this!.......2005-11-28

Oh my, this movie was God-awful. It has the feel throughout of a group of first time actors playing medieval dress-up and dragons for the camera. The special effects consist of computer-generated dragons and an extreme overuse of people's backs getting set on fire... that's pretty much it. The plot is also very weak and so typical. The fighting scenes are horribly choreographed and the acting is so bad that it looks like first time efforts for every actor except for the two kings and Theldag. Picture Ben Stiller with a slight beard, medieval clothes, and a wig. That's the hero in this calamity of a movie. There's also the typical trite and very poor attempt at humor spattered throughout also. This is definitely a low budget title. It's also in 4:3 full screen only. I consider this movie purchase one of the worst I have ever made, but it was cheap. You get what you pay for.

Just last night, this movie aired on Hallmark Channel and though it airs year after year on T.V. for Christmas time, I felt as if last night was my first time seeing it. After living a pretty much, "rotten" life, in the eyes of the One above, Ruby Diamond (Dolly Parton), has one last chance to make a difference in the world and earn her wings after she passes away in a car wreck in the beginning of the film. Ruby Diamond was no angel and the thought never crossed her mind. But that changes when she's called to repair a broken family of two kids and their father who's a work-aholic. Ruby has 'till midnight on Christmas Eve to complete her task, or else...

This is definitely a touching story and Parton plays her best. Plus, the film features a RARE performance by Dolly at the end (singing, "Unlikely Angel"). Although it was part of the movie, I thought I was at one of Dolly's concerts as she sings her heart out! It's the perfect Christmas gift, great for the entire family, both young and old! Dolly Parton shines as she gets her wings!

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-05-02

"Fun for the whole family" really means it's only appropriate for 10 or 12-year-olds. While that also applies to this movie, it can be sappy and few times I'm embarrassed to be watching it (as a guy in my 20s), but it actually IS pretty good and I would probably buy it on DVD but it isn't worth paying over $20 for. Maybe I would buy it around Christmastime.

Of all the films in which Richard Pryor was the main star in the 1970s and 1980s, this was one of the only ones to come close to capturing his impishly mercurial stage presence as a standup comedian--and also to aspire to coherency, perhaps because it was cowritten by Pryor and award-winning playwright Lonne Elder III. Pryor plays an ex-convict who gets strong-armed into helping a schoolteacher (Cicely Tyson) drive a busload of physically and emotionally handicapped children across the country. Though there is the kind of irascible adult-cute kid interplay you would expect, Pryor makes it work, even as he finds the heart in a ne'er-do-well who discovers a talent for caring for others. Watch for the scene in which Pryor finds himself face to face with a hooded group of Klansmen and comically finesses the situation. --Marshall Fine

I hadn't thought about this movie for some time. I was in this movie. I was a King County deputy (outside Seattle) at the time working off duty for set security on this movie and was invited to be in it. I am one of the two cops (the one with all the hair) at the end of the movie confronting Richard Pryor. It was very interesting being involved in this movie. I got to meet Cycely and Richard Pryor and actually small talk for a bit with them between scenes. As far as the movie itself - I enjoyed it. It is funny and actually touching in parts. There were parts of this movie that were redone at a later date to "soften" it up some for the new improved Pryor (after his accident). The kids in this movie were great and some of them were actually disabled to some degree. Yes, I agree it would be interesting to see how some of the kids are doing now..24 yrs later. By the way, I don't have all the hair anymore. It is interesting to watch a movie filmed in your home area. Watch this movie...it is worth it. Sherlock

3 out of 5 stars Pryor Genious and previous talent.......2004-03-10

Richard Pryor has become an icon , in the comedic world , of standup. However , his film work displays sheer emotional and electric moments , that can be compared to catching a tornado and training it to turn , only when you photograph it. In lamens terms , he portrays his characters with an emotional depth that only an individual who's been through the ropes of life , can show....and come across as spontaneous and believable. From , Lady Sings The Blues , Some Kind Of Hero , Which Way is Up ? , Stir Crazy , and Bust'in Loose , we get to see Pryor double as a comedic talent and dramatic actor. Whereas , Bust'in loose doesn't display the raunchy humorous side of Pryor , it does give us some very funny scenes and dramatic ones as well. Bust'in Loose , can be appreciated for two reasons. One , if you've seen Pryor's infamously hilarious raunchy stand up , or earlier works , you can apprecite seeing him in a role that doesn't call for over the top profanity and innuendo's. Second , the film can stand on it's own merits , because Pryor and Tyson light up the screen and provide so much chemisrty , that even if you've never heard of them before , you'd still enjoy the film. Bust'in Loose is written and acted fantastically. The only downside , is a scene in which , it becomes a slapstick farce , which takes away from the film. I mean , c'mon ? Cicily Tyson , making a light bulb , light up , in her mouth ? Ridiculous. That's why this film gets a three star rating , instead of a five. I felt betrayed by the writer or director , for even going there , after I've invested over an hour , getting to know the characters. Whoever stuck that in the film....it was a bad choice. Probably the ( obviously )insecure director , because that idiotic , buffoon-riddled, scene didn't get edited. I guess they wanted to reach all audience levels. Even those with IQ's lower that two.Anyhow, the film , luckily , returns to it's believability. The, current dvd edition offers nothing except providing an abitlity to choose a scene. But , I loved the movie as a kid , and I was willing to settle , just so I could enjoy the film on a lazy Sunday or something. Hopefully , they'll re-release it soon. I'd like to hear commentary and updates on the "kids". Great soundtrack and cinematography ( especially , the shots of Washington state , as they're driving through the mountains ). I highly recommend Bust'in Loose. It's just as enjoyable as the first time I saw it , when I was nine.

This movie was funny, and made for everyone. I would be happy to
share it with my daughter. One of the few movies Richard stars in for a kid crowd. Ms.Tyson plays the mother role to perfection
with all the childrens roles shining. I think this movie was a
big hit for foster children. It showed the system in a funny way.
Again, it was so funny. I think every home should own this movie. Richard of old, with the funny for all time.

Country superstar Dolly Parton stars in this heartwarming tale of a brassy and sassy lounge singer who is killed in a car crash, but denied entrance into heaven because of the selfish way she lived her life. Her penance: to reunite a family by finding a mother for two children and their recently widowed father before the Christmas deadline.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Dolly Parton.......2007-02-12

I really like Dolly Parton, this movie was ok but it not one that i would watch over and over again. However, I was glad I purchase it, because I had not seen this one.

4 out of 5 stars Dolly Parton.......2006-02-27

If you love Christmas movies and Dolly parton you will love this one. And who could not love Roddy McDowell!

5 out of 5 stars Unlikely Angel.......2006-02-23

This movie is truly amazing. It's a story of love and friendship all in one. The connection with Ruby and the young son is truly awesome. I also gave his to my in laws for Christmas and they loved it.

4 out of 5 stars not just for Dolly fans.......2005-09-13

It would be a shame if only Dolly Parton fans saw this movie. They will like it, of course, but anyone who likes wholesome family feel-good movies will like it too. Dolly has one week to bring a hurt and alienated family back together again, and this father, son and daughter are a challenge even to a good-hearted infectious spirit like Dolly. The set-backs are believable, and how she finally does it is believable.

I wish I could give the movie a perfect score, and the rest of the movie is so good, it almost deserves it. But if you're NOT a fan, the first scene is likely to dampen your response to most of the rest of the movie (until you realize that the rest of the movie is not at all like the first scene). I urge you to skip this scene on your first viewing. The story does not start until scene 2 anyway, so you're not missing any story. On the Image DVD, you can just start with track 2. If you don't, you'll feel that this is a three-star movie and you'll be sure that your friendly reviewer is totally besotted to think that merely cutting the first scene would make any difference.

The end too is regretable--not the end of the story, that ends beautifully and credibly. But the movie doesn't stop. It keeps going, and the audience is treated to a rock-country version of (I'm afraid to say it) the Hallelujah Chorus. Now, this may be some viewers' cup of beer, but others will throw up. So, depending on your taste, stop the movie when the story is wrapped up. Don't sour your experience by sitting through that musical atrocity.

If you make these two cuts, you'll be giving this movie 5-plus stars and wondering what is wrong with your friendly reviewer that he couldn't see it that way. And one final tip: if you like this type of story, check out Little House on the Prairie Christmas edition, Mary Christmas, and I'll Be Home for Christmas(1997). And if you read books, try A Thanksgiving Miracle. Other movies and books of this type, I'm sure you're already familiar with.

If you're a student of film or a screenwriter, watch the movie both ways (with the cuts and without) to discover the enormous effects that a bad scene can have on the REST OF the movie. It will astound you!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Holiday Movie! Dolly Parton is Great!.......2005-08-03

This made-for-TV movie is a wonderful film that your entire family would enjoy watching together. I teach high school students and showed them this movie close to Christmas and they really enjoyed watching it. Dolly does a great job of portraying Ruby Diamond, an outspoken lounge singer who dies in a car accident but gets a second chance at life so that she may enter the gates of heaven. She has to work with a strict deadline but she manages to pull back together a very dysfunctional family. Dolly wrote two original songs for the movie, including the title track, that aren't currently available on any other DVD or CD. This movie seems to be one that is often overlooked, when in fact it is Dolly at her best. Be sure to purchase a copy while you can - they tend to release this movie for a while and then abruptly remove it from the shelves!

Rachel Griffiths and new comer Jonan Everett star in the story of a counselor and the troubled inner-city teenager she is trying to help, both of who are at turning points in their lives. Angel acts out by stealing, lying, fighting with his father, and undermining every opportunity he is given, and seems headed for the streets. Taking place on a single pivotal day, the film challenges commonly accepted beliefs about altruism.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God For Jim McKay and 'Angel'.......2006-12-06

Once again, Jim Mckay has given us a film so overflowing with humanism and cinematic care it makes Hollywood, 'Indywood,' and television look even more like the sewer of cliché' we know it to be. A film that respects it's viewers enough to avoid easy characterizations and Oprah-level morals and resolution, 'Angel Rodriguez' harkens back to that earlier era of gritty urban drama (before the Tom Cruise clone patrol strafed through Hollywood) that gave us 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,' 'Angelo, My Love,' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' Like 'Kes,' Ken Loach's classic verite drama of a child's battle with the limited options, limited expectations and malignant indifference of his working class roots, and 'Small Change,' Francois Truffaut's celebration of the resilience of children, 'Angel Rodriguez' is a testament of faith in the future, and, most importantly, of the communal bond between us that extends beyond class, age, and race.

The performances are so utterly real and lacking in gloss or shtick it often feels like you're watching a documentary. Everett and Griffiths deliver the kind of subtle performances that earned Oscars for the young Jack Nicholson, Tim Hutton, or Ellen Burstyn. Especially good are Indie stalwarts O'Hare and Kellner, who shine as always but here bring an understated narcissism to their characters that wonderfully frames the raw 'big life decisions' at-risk Angel and his social worker Nicole face during a very tense--and poignant--36 hours.

If what you're looking for is a film you'll think about for weeks after you've seen it, poring over the minute gestures and moments and choices of these two very small lives, the kind of film that, like great art, stays with you, 'Angel Rodriguez' is for you. If you like to watch stuff blow-up, forget it, and if you're the kind or moralizer that likes his Right and Wrong underlined in crayon and wrapped up in a big easy resolution at the end, don't bother. Dr. Phil fans beware.

3 out of 5 stars Where the Parts are Greater than the Whole.......2006-11-11

ANGEL RODRIGUEZ is yet another story of a kid whose innate talents and intelligence are misguided until he comes Under the influence of a caring adult, able to share her own vulnerabilities allowing the two to grow into stronger people. At least it seems that is what this little short and rather flimsy film is trying to say. The script is so lean and the attempt to develop characters who are understandable in their own light in order for us to care about the plot line of 'redemption' just doesn't support the film. This is a case where the actors are so fine that they are able to fill in the gaping cracks in the script well enough to maintain our attention, our concern, for the duration of the film.

Jonan Everett, making his strong film debut, is that kind of understated actor whose presence rings true and this presence makes us care about a kid whose actions should repulse us at times. His 'Angel' is a bright young talented kid who longs for something more then the hand he has been dealt. His friends, especially the gender bending Jamie (Jon Norman Schneider) is another newcomer to watch. The camera loves him and it seems there is enough latent talent to make him a fine little character actor. Much the same can be said for his other computer geek friend Raymond (Wallace Little). But the strength of the production is secured whenever the talented Rachel Griffiths (Nicole - the social worker) enters the story. Though we are given little from the script to help us organize her motivations, Griffiths' power as an actress overcomes the hurdles.

Writer/director Jim McKay has done better work in the past: Everyday People, Our Song, Girls Town, and some TV show episodes. He gives us the feeling that he understands the underbelly of the big cities and probably with the next film he will have learned from ANGEL RODRIGUEZ a few pointers to help him correct the deficiencies here. 3 out of 5 stars Great Performances, But A Lack Of Character Insight, Make For An Insignificant "Angel".......2006-11-03

I'm not sure what I was supposed to be left with after viewing "Angel Rodriguez"--a slight, well meaning drama that had it's premiere on HBO. Restrained and dignified performances by Jonan Everett and Rachel Griffiths are definitely worth watching. The slice-of-life approach is interesting--we seem to be getting just enough information to want to follow these characters, but ultimately not enough to understand them. And however much I wanted to recommend and like "Angel Rodriguez"--I'm afraid it really just left me feeling a bit empty.

Angel, played by Everett, is a high school senior. He has been thrown out of his house by his father and is now trying to make his way on the streets. Angel, as presented, is an intelligent kid with loads of potential. He has quite a few friends, computer savvy, decent grades, and a well spoken and polite manner--it's a thoughtful portrait of a relatively normal kid. Apparently he doesn't get along with his father's girlfriend which is the crux of the problem at home. But, the backstory is never really developed. His father is also upset that Angel can't hold down a job and is a liar--but we never learn any details of this and it doesn't seem to gibe with the Angel we see.

Rachel Griffiths is a high school counselor who opens her home to Angel. Not only does she bring Angel home, she leaves him there unattended and gives him a key. This is such an altruistic, and questionable, decision for a counselor (whose husband doesn't object)--you know she and Angel must have a special bond. Maybe, but it's never seen in the film either. We are never let in to what draws this woman to Angel--their relationship is never seen as anything other than polite and professional.

Angel does have a couple of flashes of anger which are incongruous with the rest of the film. But that's the problem. The film never allows us to know or understand Angel. The film never allows us to know or understand Griffiths' character. And then it just ends. And while I appreciated and admired much in the film, especially it's performances,--it all seemed rather pointless. I never expected big drama and big answers--but I needed an insight into these characters if someone actually wanted me to feel anything. Really about 2 1/2, I'll round up for good intention.
