When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-21

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made, staring the world's best performer; Judy Garland!

My DVD arrived on-time, and it is in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

5 out of 5 stars There's no place like Oz, There's no place like Oz..................2007-06-11

Growing up in the 60's and early 70's my small town had access to three television channels - and two of them carried shows from the same network! The annual showing of THE WIZARD OF OZ in those pre video days was an eagerly anticipated event for kids that was discussed for days before and after even by jaded fifth and sixth graders. I recently watched the film again with my own child and was amazed by how well the story and the whole production holds up. The film has much to offer still in terms of memorable songs and characters and it is so fun to find the humdrum citizens of Dust Bowl Kansas having fantasy counterparts in surreal OZ. No wonder this movie is and will remain a film legend.

Not even the executives at Disney could have predicted the runaway success of this live-action movie inspired by Jay Ward's goofy 1960s cartoon character. Not only did George make a killing at the box office, but Disney's marketing wizards turned it into one of their best-selling videos. It's hard to begrudge the movie's success, even if this is the kind of mindless entertainment that caters to the lowest common denominator. In any case, it's obvious that kids love this movie, in which the idiotic George (Brendan Fraser) repeatedly swings into trees and attracts the attention of a lovely jungle explorer (Leslie Mann) who decides to call off her engagement to a wealthy snob (Thomas Hayden Church) in favor of the vine-swinging hunk with an elephant named Shep (that thinks it's a dog) and an ape named Ape (with a proper Brit voice provided by John Cleese). Filled with slapstick gags and some funny special effects, the movie can be a bit of a trial for adults, but it's a hilarious treat for its intended audience. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Disney presents the smash hit comedy that families and critics everywhere went bananas over! Deep in the heart of the African jungle, a baby named George, the sole survivor of a plane crash, is raised by gorillas. George grows up to be a buff and lovable klutz (ENCINO MAN'S Brendan Fraser) who has a rain forest full of animal friends -- like Tookie, his big-beaked messenger, Ape, a talking gorilla who's smarter than your average rocket scientist, and Shep, a gray-haired peanut-loving pooch of an elephant! When poachers mess with George's pals, the King Of Swing swings into action. But before you can say, "Watch out for that tree," George comes face-to-bark with a few vine-covered obstacles! You'll go wild for this "wonderfully wacky comedy" that People Magazine calls "impossible to resist!"

5 out of 5 stars Campy fun.......2007-05-25

This is one of those movies that doesn't take itself seriously, and can laugh at itself with you. There are a few moments when the fifth wall comes down, as in when the narrator directly interacts with the characters, or the characters address the viewer directly. Lots of slap stick. Good music. And a very buff and handsome Brendan Frasier. As others have noted, there are no extras on the DVD, just the movie. Still, it's a lot of fun to own and pop in the DVD player on those afternoons when you just need some lighthearted laughs and a storybook happy ending.

The Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, Fargo) have become the most consistently original filmmakers in the land. In a salute/reworking of the fast-talking comedies of the '40s, we follow Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins) and his amazing rise to the top. But he's only a puppet for the evil Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman), who wants the company for himself. The Coens' design is the real star, and their first big-budget film will stimulate movie fans. The story weakens in the middle, but you will find very few films that move with this much imagination. As a Kate Hepburn hybrid, Jennifer Jason Leigh is wonderful in an almost unplayable role. The less you know about the film, the better it plays, so just think of it as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying mixed with Brazil and every journalistic drama made before 1960. Cowritten by Sam Raimi. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Perfection........2007-06-09

I cannot say enough about this movie, and, after seeing it for the third time, I remain amazed by the skill and power of the Coen brothers. That they were able to put together a master plot while making every subfacet and tertiary character of this film incredibly interesting is nothing short of astounding. The Hudsucker Proxy is a flawless work of art that cannot be confused with real life. Many of its elements are wonderfully overstated and some of its sequences need to be replayed several times in order to grasp their grandeur--in particular, the scene in which Robbins is promoted from the mailroom in which everyone's laughs continuously and uncontrollably. That was an incredible clip and I think I'll view it again after writing this. Furthermore, Jennifer Jason Leigh's accent is priceless as is the send up of the old school newsroom. As for Newman, well he's Newman so nothing more needs to be said. Seeing this again reminded me that the Coens have more than one film I'd give 100 stars out of 100 to (Miller's Crossing). The Hudsucker Proxy is nothing short of spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars "You know,...for kids!" Comic Genius! Top 5 All Time!.......2007-05-29

It is always odd to love a movie, a cd, whatever because you know others are going to hate it for the same reasons that you love it. The Coen's always get a knee-jerk reaction from some, but this is one I really don't understand because the movie is so smart. The dialogue is amazing.

I read a review where some guy panned this because it rips on capitalism. Good grief, man. Loosen up and enjoy an intelligent, dark comedy.

Some nobody schlub from Muncie, Indiana, namely one Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), arrives in the big town and has big plans. "You know, for kids". So begins one of the greatest movies ever written, acted, directed, edited, whatever. This is fantastic, great, superb, excellent... you get the point.

So, Norville is out to take on the world, fresh out of Muncie Business College. He carries his plan for the next big thing in his shoe, it is drawn out in great detail on a neatly folded piece of plain white paper; it is a perfect circle. "You know, for kids." Robbins committed so fully to this role that I cannot imagine anyone else being able to pull it off. His stupid but smart, funny but not, noble but humble, etc... portrayal is amazing.

Paul Newman, Sid Musburger, the # 2 guy, is looking for "a proxy, a pawn", someone that can fill the recently emptied head seat of the board of Hudsucker Industries; because Mr. Hudsucker leapt 43 stories "not counting the mezzanine". They need an idiot to make the stock drop and a Muncie man is perfect for that job. Heck, he even gets to pitch his idea to the board and they love it, for all the wrong reasons.

Buzz, the elevator boy is friggin' hilarious.

Jennifer Jason Leigh, does the fast talking, big city reporter schtick to perfection. She plays the hard-hearted softy very well and somehow makes it work between her and Robbins.

Every word in this film is perfectly planned and you will miss half of what is funny because you are laughing. Watch this at least twice but probably better 3 or 4 times to get all of the dialogue. I don't know what this screenplay looked like on paper, but by the time it was on film, a masterpiece of comic genius was created.

Surprisingly, not as many people as I would think have seen this movie, but I believe it should be required for everyone that has any appreciation for writing, comedy, dark humor, or film making.

This is the Coen Brother's Opus; sheer genius.

4 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2007-05-05

Every time they set a context, it's just to defy it. It's never predictable. They'll start going in some kind of serious direction and then just make the silliest thing possible happen.
The dude who has the idea for the hula hoop, he draws a circle and expects people to understand what it is, and they never ask what it is they just ignore it like they think he's retarded or something. And the reporter gal's voice is so funny because it exists completely out of context. (People who dislike this movie seem to take the accent seriously.)
And the old guy who gets up like he's going to the bathroom or changing a lightbulb or something, really slowly while the other twenty guys around the table watch in silence, and then runs the length of the boardroom table like a diving board and dives through the glass of the 44th floor.
I think the funniest part though was when the other old dude tells Tim Robbins he's fired, but he still insists on trying to put out the fire he started in the trashcan, and he walks over to the window for some reason and the old dude thinks he's trying to leave like he told him to, and he's like "not that way, through the door". omg that was so funny.
And the sequence where the hula hoop finally reaches it's popularity, some kid finds one and starts using it and a crowd of kids stare for a while then run away screaming, seemingly in horror.
They don't direct your attention to a certain place and then put the joke there, they hit you with it while you're waiting for something else to happen. A lot like Sarah Silverman and her Program. It's unfortunate that comedy in film and tv has become so regimented that people often can't see a joke unless there's an indicator beforehand telling them where to look for it.

1 out of 5 stars 20 minutes and not a single laugh........2007-03-30

Big stars, famous directors and not a laugh to be found in the first 20 minutes of this overblown phony-looking movie. Oh, and loud. I forgot loud. This is like a big George W. Bush speech: lots of racket, big budget, and ultimately, a huge waste of time.
Har har har, buddy.

Not. Please stop the DVD player. Please.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Coens Film.......2007-03-07

This is a wonderful film filled with great characters in this 1950's piece about the business world and how unpredictable it is. the coens fill this dark comedy with flair and fun, so it amazes me that it flop. i guess people were'nt ready for it in late 90's when it was released, it could be the title as a reviewer mentioned or the world was'nt ready the pre 21 century and now to present state we really need creativity and talented shows like these to lift are spirits and realize they're hope and we can laugh at things once in awhile.

Thank you to the coens brothers for writing this and may other oddball classics.

From Keenan Ivory Wayans, the man who brought us Jim Carrey (initially just one of the bunch on Wayans's television comedy-sketch show, In Living Color), comes I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), a comedy spoof on the blaxploitation films of the 1970s. Wayans plays Jack Spade, an army private just returning from the service. He comes home to find his younger brother June Bug dead of a overdose of gold chains (an "O.G.") He vows revenge, and with the help of some of the neighborhood's old school heroes including Flyguy (Antonio Fargas), Kung Fu Joe (Steve James), Hammer (Isaac Hayes), Slammer (football star Jim Brown), and John Slade (Bernie Casey), Spade wages a war against Mr. Big, the neighborhood crime lord.

In the tradition of Airplane! and Naked Gun, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka pokes fun through satire and offensive comedy. The film also features some of the players that would end up on In Living Color and has appearances from such varied actors as Clarence Williams III, Eve Plumb (better known to most as Jan Brady), and Chris Rock as a rib-joint customer. --Shannon Gee

Description

A hilarious Soul Cinema send-up, this ultra-slick, urban action comedy blows 70's blaxploitation movies right out of the 'hood! Featuring the very funny Wayans family (Keenen, Damon and Kim), Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, Isaac Hayes, Jim Brown, Ja'net DuBois, David Alan Grier, Kadeem Hardison and Chris Rock, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka is a perfect "mixture of nostalgia, silliness and genuinely unpredictable humor" (The New York Times). Jack Spade, a goody-goody war hero with medals for short-hand, returns to the ghetto to discover that his brother, Junebug, has OG'd (Over-Golded on jewelry). Jack swears revenge against the local gang boss, Mr. Big, and sets off to enlist an army of Shaft, Superfly and Black Caesarlook-a-likes, that is. They don't come easy, cheap or youngbut they do have nice clothes and enough firepower left in them to practically destroy Mr. Big's Big Brim Bar where the bad guys wearyou guessed itbig hats!

3 out of 5 stars "Naked Gun" through Ebony Eyes.......2007-03-10

This movie takes 70's blaxploitation and makes good clean fun of them. It is the Naked Gun through ebony eyes. You will recognize every single one of these characters from something you've seen before. Included are appearances by Antonio Fargas, Jim Brown, and Isaac Hayes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Black Cinema.......2007-01-15

This movie stands the test of time and is still as hilarious today as it was when it was released. You will laugh out loud as the ridiculousness and fashion excesses of the 70s are mocked. Keenan really outdid himself with this one. "Huggy Bear" wearing gold fish filled glass heeled shoes after coming out of jail is too hilarious for words.

Watch and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Im gonna get you laughin .......2006-08-15

Rarely will will you find a movie with this many laughs from beginning to end. The cast is amazing from Issic Hayes to Bernie Casey and the laughs and the sight gags just keep on comming. I compare the humor in this movie to the likes of Airplane and Police squad it,s that funny. Like all super hero movies this has a moral and a message which is even funnier that the plot.I would highly recomend this movie to any one who needs some serious laughs. It,s rared R for a reason mainly the language but that is part of the movies charm. The language does not really offend it just is.

5 out of 5 stars How did he go to the bathroom with all that stuff on???.......2005-09-14

The best way to sum up this film is by saying that this is one of the funniest movies I have seen. This film ranks right up there with Airplane and Blazing Saddles. And by that I mean that after watching this film you will find yourself quoting lines from this film for years to come. I first saw this film over 15 years ago and to this day I still find it hilarious. Even though I have seen it many times and I know all the jokes I still laugh at them. This film is that funny. This is the Wayans Bros. back when they first got started and were at there best. This film is a parody of every blaxploitation film ever made. And it is funny picking out refernces to the different films. Also keep an eye out for cameos from various actors. And always pay attention to things that are happening in the background. 15+ years later and I am still finding things happening in the background that I missed before. So order this film sit back and be prepared to laugh so hard that you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie but disappointing DVD package.......2004-11-09

One of the funniest I've ever seen. One of the funniest movies of the 80's. But the DVD quality is horrible. Since its not an anamorphic transfer the quality is grainy. The DVD only has 3 gigs of data so that means the movie was compressed. You would think a greatly written and acted movie would have a commentary and extras features. Not on this!! This movie deserved better treatment.

Picture if you will two cousins, Charlie (Mickey Rourke) and Paulie (Eric Roberts), prowling the mean streets of New York's Little Italy. Charlie is reasonably put-together, a maitre d' at a chic café who aspires to running his own restaurant someday. Paulie is an incurable flake who can't resist a temptation or a goofball scheme, couldn't tell the truth to save his soul, and keeps splashing Charlie with the street slop of his slewing trajectory through life. This includes drawing him into the circles of Mob crime, most especially Paulie's boss, that supreme sleazebag "Bedbug Eddie" (Burt Young).

Michael Cimino is said to have had a hand in this movie, though the credited director is Stuart Rosenberg--an impersonal craftsman often hired in midshoot after the star and a more volatile director had parted company. This helps account for the picture's overall lack of rhythm and its wavering between overemphatic, Ethnic-with-a-capital-E idiosyncrasy, and low-key befuddlement. Still, it has its charms, most of them deriving from a terrific cast. At the time it came out, in the summer of 1984, Rourke and Roberts were both exciting, unpredictable talents; Roberts in particular had an amazing talent for being somebody brand new--psychologically, even physically--in every film he made. But even though they're hitting on all cylinders, the boys are quietly upstaged by some redoubtable old pros: the great Kenneth McMillan, the ineffable M. Emmet Walsh, and--scoring her umpteenth Oscar® nomination as the mother of an ill-fated cop--Miss Geraldine Page. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Classic 1980's NY.......2007-03-21

I first saw this movie in 1984 when I started my first job in NYC at the tender age of 22. And yes, I saw it right off of Little Italy!

I cringe when I hear people refer to this as a mob movie. IT IS NOT A MOB MOVIE. There are mob elements in it to set the story up but its not a mob story. It just follows two schmucks who are always trying to make it and never seem to. They try various schemes and such and never hit it big. And the stories along the way are poignant, funny, sad, and exciting all rolled into one. Growiing up in NY, we all knew a Charlie or a Paulie. They lived for the moment not for the future. Their clothes were more important than life, their image ruled their world and their world rarely went beyond a mile in either direction. A classic film that it to be owned and not rented. The soundtrack is fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars Dirt and Crime Infested.......2006-06-13

Last of the James Dean style actors, Mickey Rourke has a star turn as the likable, well-dressed, New York City hipster. Cool Hand Luke director, Stewart Rosenberg moves Cool Hand's story north, but this one is more for laughs than drama. Despite the fact that there are a dead detective and a missing appendage in the script, there's very little blood or violence. Mostly we watch Rourke mug for the camera.

I wonder if the thin, tall Ms. Hannah is doing any work lately. She sure can't act, but she does have a good boxing jab. She leaves the story with Rourke's stolen money. Then Rourke punches out his apartment. Then he smacks around his cousin, the good-for-nothing, Paulie. The loser always gets Rourke fired or in trouble with the local crime boss. Rourke's character prefers the wacky cousin to his model girlfriend. That never added up. Being cool, stealing, and winning a horse race are more important than sack time for eternity with the blonde. Nahhhh!

Geraldine Page won an Oscar, which was well deserved as the tough talking, cigarette smoking, mom of a crooked cop. New York City, circa the early 80's, before Mayor Giuliani, it's dirty and crime infested. Rourke sort of likes it that way.

This murky rumination on keeping faith in our troubled times was an early sign that writer-director Lawrence Kasdan (Silverado) was losing his once-powerful grasp on the art of storytelling. Set in modern Los Angeles--with all its random violence, venality, ubiquitous police presence, earthquakes, and dreams--the film concerns an unusual intersection of lives and chance occurrences that alter everyone's perspective on destiny. Kasdan, very understandably, is attempting to create an experience for viewers as intuitive as the undefined forces propelling his characters. But from the outside looking in, there isn't enough internal logic in the story to help us connect the dots. Steve Martin has an interesting part as a garish film producer who undergoes a change in priorities after being assaulted on the street. --Tom Keogh

Description

When a lawyer's (Kevin Kline) car breaks down in a dangerous Los Angeles neighborhood, a tow-truck driver (Danny Glover) arrives just in time to save his life. The two men begin a deep friendship that sets off a chain of unsettling and surprising events involving their families and friends for years to come. Lawrence Kasdan's powerful, uplifting film about the harsh realities of contemporary urban life co-stars Steve Martin, Mary McDonnell, Mary-Louise Parker and Alfre Woodard.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Characters You CARE about in a Truly Thought-Provoking Drama.......2007-02-22

I'm not big on dramas, but I AM a fan of Lawrence Kasdan's 1991 film "Grand Canyon."

The film is essentially about the 'grand canyon' that exists between the races and the haves and have-nots in our country. It powerfully starts out with middle-aged husband/lawyer Kevin Kline taking an unwise detour in LA and breaking down on the bad side of town; the situation turns very threatening when a group of thugs harrass him, but he is ultimately saved by Danny Glover, a tow truck driver. Thus begins a relationship that positively impacts both of their lives and the lives of those connected to them.

One powerful subplot involves Kline's love/lust for women (like any red-blooded male). He and his wife (Mary McDonnell) are experiencing the empty nest syndrome; he naturally veers toward an affair at work. There's an early scene wherein the potential "other woman" (Mary-Louise Parker) comes into his office at work and puts her hand on his. It's a simple yet potent scene. Is it wrong for Kline to have feelings for this woman? And, if so, should he risk destroying his marriage by pursuing a more intimate relationship? And, if he does commit adultery, can he still change his mind before it's too late? Will he?

That's just one subplot amongst many. Some reviewers obviously feel there are TOO many stories going on. I suggest they stick to lighter fare, like maybe "RV" (giggle).

Anyway, some themes explored include:

-- Miraculous life-saving encounters/opportunities.
-- White/black relations.
-- The rich/working class/poor "divide"
-- Homelessness.
-- Why do kids join gangs/become hoodlums?
-- The challenges of a 20-year nigh romanceless marriage.
-- The drive to improve one's living standards.
-- Does violence in film escalate violence or is it simply a reflection of society? Does a filmmaker have a moral responsibility to society?
-- Life-changing experiences that aren't so life-changing after all.
-- How many split seconds do you have to make a left turn in downtown traffic?
-- What do you do after miraculously finding/saving an infant?
-- Divine intervention.
-- Matchmaking, blind dates and finding Mr. or Ms. "right."
-- The ripple-effect each person's actions have on others, revealing humanity's significance, which is contrasted by the idea that humanity is inconsequential compared to the Earth & universe's timeless marvels, like the Grand Canyon itself.

The picture obviously bites off a LOT, but it is well able to chew it. It bespeaks of REAL LIFE and doesn't come off contrived at all. Take for example the teenager's driving lesson: He makes a serious mistake and then pulls over. After his father explains a few things he attempts to start the vehicle which is ALREADY running. We've all done that. Another example would be Steve Martin's incredibly beautiful redhead girlfriend Vanessa (Sarah Trigger): She's calm, happy and pleasant one moment but then suddenly starts crying (obviously provoked by a statement or word). A rambling and uncomfortable emotional rant ensues. It's REAL. Another example would be Mary Mcdonnell's reaction when her son asks if she and Kline are getting a divorce. Completely shocked, she asks, "Why would you ask that?! Do we seem like a couple on the verge of divorce?" She KNOWS that her son wouldn't ask such a question unless he sensed there were problems in the marriage on some instinctual level. These are just three MINOR examples off the top of my head, there's numerous more prominent examples throughout the film.

I've heard some complain that there's no humor. Huh? Did we see the same movie? There's actually quite a bit of humor or, at least, amusing and light-hearted moments. (How could there not be with Steve Martin in the cast?). Even though the picture is essentially a serious drama I busted out laughing, snickering ar smiling on quite a few occasions. The film truly delivers in this department. Plus it's realistic humor, not contrived.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Scanning through the reviews you'll note that "Grand Canyon" is a love it or hate it piece. I happen to love it. The acting is, for the most part, great and you really come to care for the characters; you CARE about the outcome of each of the many storylines. One reviewer commented that "Grand Canyon" is a depressing film; he couldn't be more wrong (Did he even finish the picture?). Yes, there are some highly disconcerting story elements, but [minor SPOILER ALERT!] the film wraps up on a very positive note [END ALERT]. Other reviewers ridiculously criticize Steve Martin, who has a beard and plays a filmmaker. These people need to get a life; Martin was perfect for the role.

A couple things I love about "Grand Canyon" is that it respects the intelligence of the viewer; it's not dumbed-down, nor is everything spelled out. Some things you simply have to read inbetween-the-lines, others are left to the imagination. It also provokes you to ponder the numerous issues it addresses for DAYS afterward. Few movies have this effect. In fact, there's so much to "Grand Canyon" that you'll get something new from the picture with each viewing. You could easily watch the film twice a year for the rest of your life and STILL derive new nuggets from its wealth of ideas with each viewing.

Oh, about the New York Times critic that lambasted "Grand Canyon" as the worst movie ever made (yeah right, 1991 was the same year "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" was released!): First of all, who cares what some moron at the NY Times says? The very fact that he writes for the NY Times tells you that his artistic judgment shouldn't be taken too seriously. Secondly, his favorite films are likely "Jackass: The Movie" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," what's that tell ya?

Quite a few negative reviewers here at Amazon mentioned this critics insane bashing of the picture. They obviously give WAY, WAY too much creedance to this guy's opinion, proving the power of suggestion: These not-too-smart, mindless, sheepy followers watched the film with this man's ultra-negative criticisms in mind and it naturally compelled them to view the picture with a ridiculous nitpicky, fault-finding attitude. My experience was different: I caught the film on TV about 7 years ago and enjoyed it with a completely untainted, unbiased mindset (I never even heard of the picture before). I liked it so much I eventually bought the DVD circa 2002. I've watched it on average about once a year since that time and have been enlightened to a greater degree (so to speak) with each viewing, not to mention I enjoyed it period (in other words, it's enjoyable simply AS IS without the burdern of looking for some message).

Make no mistake, "Grand Canyon" is a film of the most eminent order -- a masterpiece, in fact.

1 out of 5 stars Complete Boredom........2007-01-21

This movie consists of a bunch of unrelated tragedies in Los Angeles, having nothing at all to do with the Grand Canyon.

The dialog consists of people exchanging meaningless comments at cross purposes. Nothing happens. Nothing is decided.

Steve Martin is totally miscast in trying to be a serious character.
he is better off just standing in front of a tv camera and telling jokes.

It seemed as if this movie took about 12 hours.

There is no observable plot.

After a while the screen says "The End."

5 out of 5 stars Crash from an easier time.......2006-04-08

This brilliant movie was thought to be too severe a review about LA living. It is actually more optimistic than Crash with more real fun, optimism and spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Grand Canyon.......2006-03-27

This film was recommended to me by a friend. I was hesitant after reading reviews of the film, as it had received marginal ratings. I don't agree with those who have rated this film poorly. I enjoyed the deep emotion displayed in this film by the cast, who I might add, were excellent in their roles. This story takes place in Los Angeles and has many similarities to "Crash", as it deals with issues of race and prejudices. I believe this film was fairly innovative in 1991, which might be the reason it was not well received. The story does have weeknesses in the fact that I was constantly expecting something bad to happen and then all worked out at the last minute before impending disaster. In Crash, the bad things happen which gives that story more depth and tears at your emotions. This film deals with issues that most of us can relate to. That being, we don't always take the time to really explore our feelings and emotions. We don't always take time to explore how our actions affect those people we love or care for. I liked those aspects of the film. My husband was not as affected this way and would probably agree with those who rated this film with low to medium ratings.

I truly enjoyed this film. It may not be for everybody, but I would recommend it and I would enjoy watching it again.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the ignorant jibes...this film is truly outstanding........2006-03-26

I've just endured an unpleasant half hour trawling through the myriad reviews of "Grand Canyon", that are so misinformed as to be laughable.

Aside from the fact that the New York Times may have awarded this the "worst film of all time" (in a year that "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves" was released?? - please!) I find these attitude of such reviewers quite lamentable. Grand Canyon is a magnificent film - and absolutlely NOT just the purview of "New Agers"! Anyone who has studied film to even a marginal degree will recognise the greatness in Grand Canyon. No, it's not "The Godfather"... yet it is still one of the finest films of its time. To those it touches (and there are many), it is unforgettable.

Kasdan had a vision that was unfortunately ahead of its time (and still appears to be in 2006, judging from some of the reviews here!). Certainly not "The Big Chill", Grand Canyon is a far more nuanced work - to those who understand its subtleties, it is sublime - to those still struggling to comprehend the mysteries, magic and meaning of our existance here, I can see how it might appear impenetrable or pretentious. That is no fault of the film itself - just as "Deuce Bigalow" is speaking to its chosen audience of prepubertal adolescents, so is Grand Canyon attempting to connect with those humans who choose to delve beneath the flimsy facade of modern existance. To the opinion-makers, it will naturally slip under their radar; don't let that be a reason for you missing this unmissable film.

To anyone considering this film, I implore you - do not be distracted by the inane ramblings of posters who wouldn't understand a truly meaningful film if they fell over it. Grand Canyon is for a select audience - it will never be widely popular; as if that were any true marker of what is important! Grand Canyon stands tall as one of the great achievements of the 1990s - watch it, and be moved. Watch it, and see a reflection of the world we currently find ourselves in - striving for answers, yearning for meaning... and looking all the while for the magic that defines our existance.

Absolutely five stars!

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Movie...........2007-04-10

I saw this a long time ago and then someone stole my copy! I don't really remembver it but I do remember loving it. All I really wanted to say after reading some of the other reviews is this was a great movie but can't be compared to The Mack at all. If this movie is 5 stars then The Mack is 15! Because its waaay better. I still loved this though.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm gonna make you number one minus one, which equals zero.".......2006-12-15

From Universal Studios' Soul Showcase come Willie Dynamite (1974), a film about the rise and fall (mostly the latter), and eventual rebirth, of a, flashy, ambitious New York City street hustler. Directed by Gilbert Moses (The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh), the film stars Roscoe Orman, probably best known for his character of Gordon on the children's television series "Sesame Street", Diana Sands (A Raisin in the Sun), and Joyce Walker (The Education of Sonny Carson). Also appearing is Thalmus Rasulala (Friday Foster), Roger Robinson ("Kojak"), George Murdock (The Mack), and Albert Hall (Apocalypse Now).

Roscoe Orman plays Willie Dynamite, an ambitious, arrogant, demanding, no nonsense street hustler who commands a respectable stable of women and always has his eye on the prize, the prize being to be the number one hustler in New York City (seems he's currently number two, although I'm not entirely sure the criteria the rankings are based upon). Things are going well for Willie (except for his newest girl Pashen, played by Joyce Walker, who's got one of the largest afros I've ever seen, isn't `producing' as well as she should), that is until he hooks up with some of his pimpy peers in a meeting of sorts, the discussion, headed up by a player named Bell (Robinson) leading to talk of organizing, if only to deal with the excessive amount of heat coming down and to keep themselves from stepping on each others toes. All acquiesce to the proposal, except for Willie, who's a firm believer in the capitalistic and competitive nature of the business. After the meeting things turn sour for Willie as the pressures from not only his peers and the authorities starts coming down hard, but there's a former streetwalker, who's now a social worker named Cora (Sands), trying to educate his women, particularly Pashen, on the pitfalls of being `in the life'. Seems Cora has taken a particular interest in Willie, so much so she goes out of her way to see him jammed up. Willie's girls begin to get busted on a regular basis, his sweet ride towed about sixteen times, his business horned in on by his peers, and Willie himself is rousted by the authorities every chance they get...oh yeah, he's also being investigated by the IRS...I guess when it rains, it pours. Eventually Willie bottoms out under the various pressures applied, with Cora, of all people, the only one he can turn to given the fact that she actually pities him in some, small manner as she can see he was just as much a victim of the system as the women he abusively kept under his thumb.

I was expecting some average, blaxploitation fare here, but what I got was considerable more. The story seemed more or less to me a cautionary type tale, one that focused on the redemptive. Orman's character is certainly a loathsome figure throughout much of the feature, given his treatment of `his' women and his perverted, capitalistic views, but, as Cora eventually did, I actually felt for him a little by the end of the film...not as much as Cora, but then again I didn't have as much a hand in his downfall as she. Orman plays his role exceedingly well, to which I account that which I felt for his character by the end. A lot of credit should also go to Diana Sands in the role of Cora, as one could almost feel the pains she suffered in her often wasted efforts to pass along her knowledge, stemming from her own experiences, to those women just starting out in the trade. I did learn quite a bit from this film, including the following...

1. The price of meat has gone up everywhere.
2. Being the `bottom lady' of a hustler is a pretty thankless gig, one that involves a lot of responsibility and few rewards, along with the distinct possibility of getting your throat slit by a skaggy streetwalker.
3. Hustlers tend to refer to themselves in the third person.
4. When the heat gets heavy the action gets scarce and the turf gets hard.
5. When it comes down on you, you either collectivize or you run.
6. You can pay the homeless to watch your fancy, tricked out automobile while it's parked on a city street but don't expect much in terms of their reliability.
7. They love them young and pretty in the New York Women's House of Detention (as do I).
8. A ginormous, late model purple Cadillac with gaudy, gold trim and shaggy, animal print seat covers seems to be a real tow truck magnet.
9. Nobody cuts out on Willie Dynamite.
10. Even among street hustlers one can dress to the point of being overly ostentatious.

I thought the story engaging and the pacing well timed, as the film never really slowed down to the point where I was bored...I suppose it helps if you have interesting characters to keep your attention. One interesting aspect here, something different than the other films of the genre, is that there was no nudity. There was, however, some violence, along with a lot of profanity (if you ever wanted to hear Gordon from Sesame Street cuss it out, here's your chance). The funniest part of the film, besides Willie's ridiculously over the top fur-lined fashions, was when Willie, after he and his pad had been busted up by some rivals, gets arrested and is being put into the back of a squad car. In the process he sees a bunch of kids stripping his own ride, which seemed to upset him more than all the other misfortunes he suffered up to that point. All in all I thought this a well made feature, with some excellent performances, and certainly a cut above many of the films within the genre. One thing's for sure, I'll never look at Gordon from Sesame Street the same...

The picture quality on this DVD, presented in widescreen anamorphic (1.85:1), looks sharp and clean, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 mono audio, available in both English and Spanish, comes through very well. There aren't any extras on the DVD, but there are subtitles available in English, Spanish, and French. There are some unrelated previews tacked on up front, ones that start playing when the DVD is inserted into a player, but you can advance past these if desired.

Who knew that Gordon from Sesame Street was a pimp. I first saw this movie on television a couple of months ago and had to have it. The music and clothes will take you back.

2 out of 5 stars Waste of Time Video.......2006-07-10

I did not like this movie. I enjoyed the Mack much better. The price on this video should of been cheaper.

3 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-06-30

It was an interesting amount of Player Hatin' in that film. Some of it was good but it was more of a "Before Gordon Came To Sesame Street" kinda tale.

The postwar vogue for documentary-style realism, prompted by The March of Time and the critical success of Roberto Rossellini's Open City, cross bred with film noir to create a compelling strain of crime films; this is one of the most low-key and credible, based on the true story of a Chicago reporter (James Stewart) who became convinced of the innocence of a death-row inmate (Richard Conte). Director Henry Hathaway (whose Kiss of Death started the trend) stages the action on the actual Chicago locations, providing a fascinating documentary record of an underfilmed metropolis (the convict's mother is a washerwoman at the Wrigley Building), and leads his cast to appropriately restrained, naturalistic performances. Stewart is just beginning to explore his newfound, postwar maturity here, and there's an undercurrent of obsessiveness in his performance that anticipates the haunted figures he would soon be playing for Anthony Mann and Alfred Hitchcock. --Dave Kehr

5 out of 5 stars Call Northside 777.......2007-06-21

Based on a true story, "Northside" is a triumph of documentary realism and noir storytelling for Hathaway and leading man Jimmy Stewart. Filmed on location and narrated in Movietone-newsreel style, this legal thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat with its detailed attention to such elements as the mechanics of a lie detector. (Even a prototypical fax machine plays an important role.) Stewart is absolutely first-rate as McNeal, and the tremendous supporting cast--especially Conte, Lee J. Cobb (as the cigar-chewing Chicago Times editor), and Betty Garde (as a harridan speakeasy owner)--lend "Northside" further grit and emotional weight. An engrossing urban fable.

5 out of 5 stars Call Northside 777.......2007-03-22

Captivating story and a quality movie. If you liked Twelve Angry Men or State of the Union you'll like this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Go Jimmy Go.......2007-02-03

As you can see by the 5 stars I really liked this movie. It kept my interest. Of course I am a big fan of Jimmy Stewart, and anyone who is a fan of his will like this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Noir-esque cold-case thriller........2006-10-11

Jimmy Stewart and Lee J. Cobb star in this noir-esque cold-case thriller. Stewart plays the hard-nosed big-city reporter in 1942 who is assigned to investigate a cop-killer case from 1932. Stewart becomes involved in the case when he reports on the sad story of the old lady who scrubs floors for a living and saves every dime to get her convict son out of prison. The story is very popular with the news-paper reading public, so Stewart is assigned to investigate the case. Stewart cynically follows the leads, believing that the convict is guilty but following the human interest angle. Ultimately he becomes convinced of his subject's innocence and Stewart is involved in race against the clock to get the falsely accused man out of prison.

This is a classic tale that has since been done many times. Northside 777 suffers from some problems with writing and pace. The solid and charismatic acting job of Jimmy Stewart carries the film, along with the stalwart masculinity of Lee J. Cobb. Stewart plays his patented mumbling, querulous yet emotionally vulnerable professional male with charm and an endearing sexiness. The documentary style of the film-making with the startlingly strident narrator is a little melodramatic but probably quite dramatic during the time period. The resolution to the case presages the forensic investigation style of modern films.

5 out of 5 stars Answering the call at Northside 777.......2006-04-18

A really good film noir from Jimmy Stewart. It has a documentary style that may come off a little stilted today but is still a fine character piece. The film remains suspenseful until the end and has a "good" ending but not necessarily the "happy" ending. The climactic scene has a plot hole you can drive a truck through, but who cares? Jimmy Stewart is in great form as a cynical reporter. There is fine support coming from Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte. Its a tale of guilt and innocence in gangland Chicago.

There's a fascinating film to be made about the pimp culture and the myth of the outlaw sexual entrepreneur. American Pimp, a slick and entertaining but rather timid documentary by filmmaking brother act Allen and Albert Hughes (Menace 2 Society, Dead Presidents) isn't quite it, but it's a captivating document nonetheless. Flashy, garrulous real-life characters with names like Charm, Rosebudd, Too $hort, C-Note, and the "internationally known" Bishop Don Magic Juan take over their interviews with silver-tongued charm, spinning self-aggrandizing, often contradictory stories of life in the trade. The Hughes never challenge those contradictions and give only token representation to the women in the life (who have either bought into the myth or are too cowed to say differently). Apart from a few unguarded statements by less cagey subjects, the film avoids the seedy flip side to the so-called benevolent relationship between pimp and "ho." More to the Hughes' point is the fluid relationship between media image (as celebrated in such blaxploitation classics such as The Mack and Willie
